(00:20):
his time with Us, presented byMiddleton Ford. Matt's how were you today?
Doing well? Man? How's itgoing? Man? Everything is going
great today? I quite say show. It was this past Friday night at
the Coles Center, the Badgers reboundedafter their loss to Penn State, the
first in the Big Ten Conference,to take down Indiana ninety one to seventy
nine. Now, obviously the biggeststory of the game was Max Klesmant Matt
(00:42):
twenty consecutive points during the second halfof that game by far the biggest story.
I mean, yeah, when youscored twenty in a row, that
doesn't happen very often. It waskind of weird because I think a lot
of us lost count because he hadhit two threes and then Indiana went on
a nine point run all of asudd seven point game, and then Max
scored the next fourteen. And that'sreally what what I was going by.
(01:04):
I mean, when when Indiana wasmaking it tight, I mean, he
was scoring in every way to driveinto the basket, hitting threes, and
he also had a beautiful assist atthe end of all of that when it
looked like he was going to stepinto a three point attempt at the top
of the top of the key andthen but he finds Carter Gilmore wide open
down low, and that was abeauty. That was a very unselfish,
(01:26):
you know, just a veteran kindof move. But yeah, those are
Wisconsin basketball fans have been pretty blessedto see scoring spreeze individuals freeze. Jordan
Taylor, you know, Bronsi Kaneyactually Dimitrick twice and this is I mean,
even I had forgotten about this.In the COVID year with you know,
(01:48):
they were playing in front of cardboardcutout to the Cole Center. He
went on a run and he scorednineteen straight against Illinois. It was a
game that Illinois won and just madethe nature of that season and it's easy
to forget, but what Max hasbeen doing really these last few games.
He had foul troubled against Penn State, so that limited his time. But
you know, the second half againstOhio State, the game period against Northwestern,
(02:13):
the first half he had in Decemberagainst Marquette. I mean, this
guy's known for probably the defense, the grit and all of that first,
but he's letting us know that heknows how to put the ball in the
basket too. Talking with the voiceof the Badgers, Matt lape Moneys with
Matt presented by Middleton Ford, Ithink something else meant that I didn't realize
that this streak had gotten to thispoint. But the Badgers have now won
twenty games in a row at homeagainst Indiana. They haven't lost since nineteen
(02:38):
ninety eight, the first season ofthe Coal Center. I didn't realize this
streak had gotten to that point. It is a remarkable streak. And you're
probably too young, Ben b andme being an old dude, I can
appreciate. There was a time whenIndiana just dominated Wisconsin. You know,
when Bob Knight was coaching, therewas a stretcher. They had won thirty
one straight games. They played itin Madison or Bloomington or you know,
(03:04):
you know wherever, Indiana dominated theseries and then when when Dick Bennett was
here, they finally ended that innineteen ninety seven. I want to say,
but yeah, since you know theselast when you're starting with Bo Ryan's
teams, they've really controlled the seriesperiod. But to beat Indiana twenty straight
times. The only time Indiana wonat the Cole Center was the second game
(03:27):
Wisconsin ever played in that building innineteen ninety eight. So I think if
you're old enough to really understand thehistory of college basketball, the Big Ten,
knowing what basketball means, that Indiana, so to know that Wisconsin has
done this twenty consecutive times on thehome floor against the Hoosiers is nothing short
of remarkable. No, it's nottalk with the Voice of the Badgers,
(03:49):
Matt lape On I b AFM recappingthe Badgers win over Indiana from this past
Friday night. We talked about Maxklesmant Matt, but let's also talk about
this bench again. They were ledby John Blackwell twelve points, but they
got twenty four points in total fromtheir bench guys. Yeah, their death
again helped them out, and Ithink Blackwell specifically because the game started really
choppy on Friday against Indiana, andthen you know, Blackwell came in a
(04:13):
lot of that you know, theso called second unit. Those guys came
in and really started to restore someorder. What Blackwell did, he got
seven points in a pretty short periodof time in that game and help the
Badgers just get a footing in thegame against Indiana. Like I said,
it was just kind of a herkyjerky start to the game. So it's
I don't even you know, guardGreg Garbage maybe just half joking after the
(04:36):
game. So it was hesitant toput the starters back in because the other
guys were doing a really good job. But it's good to know that you've
got, you know, other peopleyou can turn to if if you're if
your starters are struggling, and theywere able to manage the minute in that
game. The starters played heavy minutesoutside of Klesman in the Penn S Day
(04:57):
game and Greg was able to managethose men. And it's and you know
because those other guys gave them areason too. So that's a kind of
a hidden component from Friday that hopefullywill help these guys stay as fresh as
you possibly can when you start toget toward late January, and you know,
some fans get caught up so muchand you know how many stars these
players have when they're coming out ofhigh school or were they're ranked? John
(05:19):
Blockwell, was it two hundred andtwelve player ranked in the twenty twenty three
high school recruiting class match. Ithink John Blackwell's kind of I'll plick that
ranking. Uh yeah. Wisconsin basketballhas made a living off of this,
off of guys who maybe are notthe highest profile high school guys. I
(05:40):
mean it's just time and time againthey've had players who might not be top
one hundred or top one fifty andthey turn out to be really, really
good players here. So it makesyou wonder who's doing the evaluating and what
are you really looking at? Anddoes it come down to what schools are
recruiting you. It's really it soundscliche when you hear coaches talk about it.
(06:02):
They don't really look at the numberof stars by a name and all
of that. I mean, ifyou can get a bunch of Ford five
star guys, that's great, Butwhat you're really looking for is the guys
who fit what you are looking for, and it's pretty safe to say that
John Blackwell fits what they're looking for. Yeah, without talking with a Voice
of the Badgers Matt Lapey Moneys withMatt present a Bond Middleton Ford, we
(06:23):
now look ahead to tomorrow night,Wisconsin hits the road to meet Minnesota border
battle match. A little preview theGophers for US. Yeah, they've been
scuffling a little bit. They've losttheir last three games, but I think
it's an improved team. Ben Johnson, the former Gophers in his third year
as a coach of that team. They've had a couple guys out. If
Elijah Hawkins is okay to play,he can be a pretty electrifying point guard
(06:48):
for them. He's averaging close toeight assists per game. He's a transfer
from Howard. Didn't play against MichiganState last week, had an ankle injury
that he suffered in the previous gameagainst Iowa. But he's a terrific distributor.
Dawson Garcia. They're one of thefrontline guys averaging about eighteen points a
game. He's had a couple ofthirty point games already this year. So
(07:11):
it's you know, when you gothere. The Badgers have had some narrow
escapes in the in recent years upat the Barn, and it is that
rivalry. It's you just got aWinning on the road has been brutally difficult
for teams in this league. SoWisconsin's got a couple of them at Michigan
State and Ohio State, but ahiccup last week. So it's it's really
big. You know, they're allit's again cliche here, they're all really
(07:34):
big right now with Purdue on theirheels. But it's a game where you
just hope Wisconsin can you know, pick up offensively where it had left off
against Indiana. But they also knowthey're gonna to get a lot better on
the defensive end here, and that'sbeen leaky to put in mildly here in
the last couple of three games. So we're gonna see if they can shore
that up Tomorrow night. Bagers gofirst Tomorrow night. Our coverage starts at
(07:57):
five per game does with Matt lapeTips on set for six Packers. Season
came to an end yesterday. Matt, what is your biggest takeaway from this
season? It's kind of a broadquestion, but yeah, I think the
biggest takeaway is they're they're in agood place moving forward. This was a
rebuilding year and they made the playoffs. You could look at it and say,
missed opportunity to get to the NFCChampionship game. I look at it
(08:20):
more that they were ten and nine, so let's not confuse them with an
elite team in the NFL. Butit also shows you there's not a big
difference between you know, an aboveaverage team in a one seed in the
NFL. It's a much different animalthan the college game. But with Jordan
Love, his maturity, his poise, you know, I know, the
(08:43):
last pass is one that anybody wouldwant back, but he was pretty close
to flawless from mid November on.If they shore up some things defensively,
obviously you got, you know,a kicking situation that you need to at
least take a look at and getsome competition. But for a for a
year with uncharacteristically low expectations on theoutside for the Green Bay Packers, they
(09:07):
put together a really good season. So I think moving forward, those expectations
ramp right back up, and theyare they are in a in a really,
really good spot right now. You'vegot to love where they are offensively,
We'll see what you know. Defensiblythey got better down the stretch,
but there it's a huge next severalmonths for this franchise. But I think
(09:30):
people right now should feel pretty goodabout the prospects of the Packers moving forward,
and the Packer fans out there wantsome teams to continue to kind of
cheer along your root for as theplayoffs continue. Leo Chanelle former Batchers still
live with the Chiefs, as isKevin Zeitley with the Ravens as well.
Is there any Batcher coaches Matt thatare still on these teams? Uh,
(09:52):
well, yes, that went toofast. Off the top of my head.
I don't I don't think so offthe top of my head with with
with those teams. But yeah,it's uh, you know, Leo's had
pretty good start to his career,to say the least, already a Super
Bowl. Ring feel really good forZeidler. I mean, he's been you
talk about a pros pro. He'sa great dude for one thing, and
and he's been a really good offensivelineman for a long time now now in
(10:15):
the NFL and has really has founda home in Baltimore. And it's been
you know, with the Detroit Lions. How can you not. I know
they're in the same division with thePackers and all of that, but what
Dan Campbell has done with a witha organization that has had next to no
glory for decades and now on thedoorstep of getting to the Super Bowl.
(10:37):
So it's been it's been fun towatch the games. Really, Three out
of four of the games here werepretty fun to watch. You know,
Baltimore won handily, but the othergames were pretty wildly entertaining. So it's
gonna be fun. Yeah. Always, I'm more of a people person than
an actual like rooting it in specificteam, so it'll be fun to watch
(11:01):
these games coming up this weekend.Last question for you, I know you
are a big fan of this guy, Jeff Levering, who people know from
TV broadcasts of Brewers baseball. Hewas named Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Years.
Want to since some love off toJeff. I'm sure you've got a good
story about him. Yeah, he'sa great dude. I mean, just
knowing him for as long as Ihave, since he since he came here.
(11:22):
I mean, I think he's thething about Jeff is he's had opportunities
to uh to call games another forother MLB franchises, but he really likes
being here. He he loves workingalongside Bob Uker when he's on the radio
side, and then obviously his histelevision. His television work, you know,
has been terrific, not just withthe Brewers, but with with college
(11:45):
football and college basketball. Just he'sa it's that old line about this business.
I mean, you know, talent, you need to have that,
but you also need to be agood teammate. And he's he's a great
teammate, just a really good guy. So I can't even dig deep for
any really any salty stories on him. I mean, he's pretty much a
pure dude. So it's so no, it's good, good guy. A
(12:05):
chance to see him a couple oftimes here in the last week or so.
So terrific broadcaster, really good dude. Yeah A grets to Jeff Levering
again twenty twenty three Wisconsin Sportscaster ofthe Year. All Right, Matt,
have fun, safe travels to Minneapolis. Badgers go first tomorrow night. All
right, sounds good man. Thanks, there we go. If you miss
