One to one point five I BA FM Madison's classic Ronka Floyd Fix on
this back to work Monday on IB A F FAM Welcome in now the
voice to the Wisconsin Badgers, mattLeape Matts, Were you doing all that?
How you doing doing good? Kindof an off weekend, which was
weird to have here this lady intoFebruary, wasn't it. Yeah, just
a chance to take one more deepbreath, I think if you're if you're

(00:22):
the Badgers. Although they kept itpretty competitive, reg Guard mentioned he wasn't
going to give guys consecutive days off. They were going to still get their
work in. But I think, you know, for for a fan,
you could, if you're a junkie, you could watch a bunch of other
teams play and now get ready forthe push that will take this team through
the end of the season, whichhopefully for them, is a ways away.
But just four regular season games leftand then the conference tournament and then

(00:45):
what follows, So, uh,you know, one more chance to get
yourself get yourself ready and buckled upfor the stretch. Yeah, let's go
back to this past Tuesday night,Wisconsin, Touctown, Maryland, seventy four
to seventy at the Cole Center.A pretty tight game, Matt. Throughout
it was so well. It's especiallytoward the end of that game. The
Badgers pulled it out though, Andwhat we saw them struggle with against Iowa
was well at the free throw line. That was one of the things that

(01:08):
propelled them in this win over Maryland. Yeah, it's interesting that the difference
in games sometimes. I think Wisconsindid play better defensively, although Maryland made
some shots down the stretch. Imean they just had to, you know,
hoist up a few threes to tryto stay alive, and they were
able to do that. And inthe Iowa game, as you said,
where they left a lot of pointsat the foul line, they were terrific

(01:30):
against the Turks, what twenty eightto thirty one, almost perfect in the
final minute in the final forty toforty five seconds of that game, and
that was what was able to keepthem separated. I mean, Maryland kept
it close, Wisconsin was able topush them back kind of keep it close
to arms length. But it wasa better performance I thought for Wisconsin.

(01:52):
They were choppy in the first half, protecting the ball much better in the
second. They had good balance inthe game. Tyler Wall was really good,
Max Klesmant was clutch, hit areally big three, and then I
think he was six and six atthe foul line in the last minute.
So what they did, what theyhad to do, and that was much
needed for this team. Badgers hiteleven of twelve free throws in the last

(02:14):
forty two seconds. As we've talkedabout, they went twenty eight of thirty
one. That's the most made freethrows for a Badger men's basketball team since
January of twenty sixteen. So theytook care of business from the final line.
But Matt, you kind of touchedon it there. We saw against
Ayowa two some lapses on the defensiveend. That wasn't the case necessarily against
Maryland. They held their leading scorer, Jamiir Young to just what sixteen or

(02:38):
yeah, six of seventeen shooting andjust twenty points. So Badgers, we
didn't see those lapses against Maryland.Yeah, and I think you know,
the defensive issues have been there formuch of the year. The offense has
been efficient enough to cover up alot of that until these last few weeks.
But you're right, they made JamiirYoung work for it. I mean,
this guy, you have to say, he had a twenty point game.

(03:00):
That's a little bit below his average, you know, by about a
point point and a half, butseventeen shots to get there. So they
they really did a good job ofmaking him work and it was it was
good. Like I said, itwas a you know, Julian Reese is
a really good player. They heldhim. He says, rebounding total was
was a little less than what thanwhat he's used to. I mean,

(03:21):
right now, you're just you're tryingto win games. I mean, obviously
you want to play well and shoreup the mistakes, and I think they
took some steps in doing that talkingabout the Badgers here. But uh,
you know, the one thing aboutbasketball right now, the style points can
be really overrated. You need toget a win and get yourself ready for
struggling Indiana team tomorrow and then whatwill be a pretty special day they hope

(03:44):
is they honor honor Howard Moore andyou know, recognize him and his his
you know, very slow, butyou know, progressing off of the horrible
car accident of coming up on fiveyears ago now and and on the floor,
you know, playing a very goodIllinois team. So it's another big
week for this Wisconsin basketball teams. With the Voice of the Badgers Matt Lapey
Moneys with Matt presented by Middleton Fordon ib AFM's Matt mentioned there Bucky meets

(04:10):
Indiana tomorrow night on the road Assemblyhaul Indiana. What losers have for in
a row here most recently felt twoPenn State this past Saturday, eighty three,
two seventy four. So Matt littlepreview on the Hoosiers. I know
they're Scoffland, but as we alwaystalk about, road games in the Big
Ten, never easy, Yeah, and it's one of those. It's if
you're Wisconsin, it's a game youwere supposed to win, even though it's

(04:30):
on the road, and the homerecord of the Big Ten has been better
than the other other major conferences thisseason. But if you're the better team,
you would hope that you would beable to prove that Indiana is just
they've not shot it well from three. They don't shoot a ton from three,
and with reason, ano the worstfree throw shooting team in the league

(04:51):
and one of the worst in collegebasketball. So what do you do if
that's the case. You pound theball inside, and that's what Indiana does.
It has a very good line.Khalil Ware, the transfer from Oregon,
is having a really big season, averaging nearly a double double. Molik
renewed the sophomore. He had twentyeight against Wisconsin when they played at the
Cole Center last month, twenty sevenagainst Purdue, or excuse me, against

(05:15):
Penn State on Saturday. He wasa real problem for Wisconsin and a lot
of other teams. So those twoguys, I would imagine we'll get a
lot of usage. It's been atough year clearly for Indiana, four in
a row, as he said, eight out of ten, but I would
think that they're you know, they'regoing to be up for Wisconsin. Max
Klesbant went off in that game againstIndiana with twenty straight points. He scored

(05:39):
and was an agitator, put itthat way. So I'm sure that the
Hoosiers will be as motivated as youcan be given the fact that they've had
a very tough year. Yeah,Indiana also ten and five at home this
season, So we'll see what happenstomorrow night, Wisconsin versus Indiana, Assembly
Hall, Bloomington, Indiana. Youcan hear that game with us on ib
A yeh start said five with thevoice of the Badger's Matt Lapey. Of

(06:01):
course, tip off set for six. So, Matt, I want to
ask you about court storming in collegebasketball. We've seen a number of incidents
this year. We heard Purdue coachMatt Painter earlier this year go off on
this. We saw it happen withCaitlin Clark with IOWA on the women's side
of college basketball, and then ourlatest incident this past SERVI Saturday. If

(06:23):
I could speak today, dang withDuke and wake forth. So how do
we stop this? We know whenit comes to the SEC they do fines
when fans storm the court, butthat doesn't affect the fans the students,
I should say, they're not goingto stop storming for that. So do
you have an answer for this?I don't know what it is. Yeah,
you need a better plan with security. I think that's one thing with

(06:45):
the Coal Center, they do areally good job with that. They prepare
for it, they rehearse it.Your top priority is to protect the players,
especially the opposing team, but youwant to protect all the players,
the coaches, everybody connected with theprogram, and if you you rope off
that area, you have a lineof security personnel there. And that's that's

(07:06):
what was missing in the in thewomen's game at Ohio State. I mean,
if you're Caitlin Clark, I don'tknow if you want to make a
sprint to the locker room like that, But you know she also needed people
around here, some security people aroundher, and that didn't happen. And
in the case with wake Forest, they just look totally caught off guard,

(07:26):
which is a little bit mind numbingin a situation like that, and you
know it's inevitable that that someone's goingto get hurt. And I mean I
have I have been a proponent ofit. I think that's one of court
storming in general, because I thinkit's one of the things that separates the
college game from from the NBA.The games can mean more the student session

(07:48):
gets involved. But if you can't, if you are incapable of securing the
floor and ensuring the safety of theparticipant, then I think as an institution,
you've got to pay a price tothat. And a steep one not
a not a handslap, wrist slap, I mean a steep. I mean
that's that's how do you hurt athleticdepartments. You get them in the pocketbook.

(08:11):
I mean, I would hate tosee the end of this, but
you know, it seems like overthe weekend, and we've seen a few
things this season. It's not thefirst year that this has come up as
a topic. It's not going tobe the last. But you know,
the way we're trending here, youwonder how much longer this is going to
be permitted at all. But tome, it's it's just a matter you've

(08:33):
got to be prepared for it.Anytime a good team comes into your building,
no matter if you're a good team, I mean, Wake is a
good team. If you think you'vegot a chance to win, even if
you don't, you have to preparefor that scenario. And we've seen instances
where schools have done a very verypoor job of that. Yeah, And
I mean, at the end ofthe day, it's just about safety for
the players on the court. Imean, worst case scenario, you have

(08:56):
a fight breakout on the court. That's absolutely what you do not want.
So that makes a lot of sensewhat you're kind of laying out there.
Maybe we should put you in charge, Matt. You want that. Well,
yeah, right, yeah, probablyout of my out of my pay
grade. But you also, Imean it's the safety of the fans.
Yeah, I mean you have toyou have to keep that in mind.
And you remember, you know, many years ago at Camp Randall Stadium where
the design of the of the railingat Camp Randall nearly caused fatalities in a

(09:24):
in a game against Michigan back innineteen ninety three. Corrections have since been
made. So it's just, uh, I just I hate to do things
that would curb the enthusiasm of studentssections, but it's got to be done
within reason. And you're right,I mean, we're getting closer and closer
to having a you know, amassive fight where you know, players are
gonna they're going to defend their ownThey're going to defend themselves. So just

(09:48):
just be better, Just be betteras as institutions securing the safety of the
of the personnel. Something with thevoice of the Badger's Matt lape Moneys with
Matt Soon I'll be a Fan,presented by Middleton Forward. Last question for
you, sir, Brewers spring trainingunderway. They are let's see one in
one in Cactus League play for thosewho are keeping track. Matt, I'm

(10:09):
not going to ask you expectations atleast record wise for this scene, but
instead, what are you most excitedfor? Well, I think the same
thing most Brewer fans are excited for. You want to see these young guys,
you know, Jackson, Curio, you know, Garrett and Mitchell.
Where does he fit in? Youknow south freely you can play. You
know, they're working them in theenfield a little bit as well, you

(10:31):
know, as well as the outfield. You know, is this something that
then it will be for real oneonce the season begins? I mean with
this, you know, we know, you know, Christian Yelich had a
nice bounce back year. He's probablynot going to be the player that he
was for this clarback in eighteen andnineteen, but it was a pretty good
step in the right direction for himlast season with the Brewers. But to

(10:54):
me, it's it's these younger guys. I mean, that's where they're you
know, that's where they're putting theirtheir money right now, on this young
group of Brewers. So you know, Weimer so on and so forth.
It's going to be fun to seetheir progression and sometimes you know, youth
can hurt you, and sometimes ithelps you because you're too young to know

(11:15):
better. And hopefully that'll be thecase with his Brewers came and the SEEO
Pat Murphy managed team. You know, his personality is considerably different from from
Craig Council. What Craig did workedextremely well with the Brewers, and you
know, Murph is somebody I think, you know, people who cover the
team genuinely like and respect, andyou know, more importantly, I think

(11:35):
the players like and respect them.So it's going to be fun to watch
how that evolves in a division whereyou know, it seems like it is
the makings of being very very competitive. Yeah, without it, Burr's actually
meet the Reds right now. Firstpitch was back at suit in this afternoon,
So Matt, thank you for yourtime as always, and safe travels
to Bloomington tomorrow. All right, sounds good, bat Thanks, Yes,

(11:56):
