One to one point five IBYFM Madison'sclassic rock Mondays with Matts. It is
here on this back to Work Monday, presented by our friends over at Middleton
for the voice of the Manager's MattLapey. He is with us, Matts.
How are you, sir, Goodwillman? How's going every thing?
He's going good today? Before wedive into the outcome and really dive deeper
into the game on Saturday, Iwant to start out with the pregame ceremony
(00:23):
honoring former assistant coach and former playeras well, Howard More. Pregame is
first appearance public appearance at least atthe Cool Center since just that tragic car
accident that took the lives of hiswife and his daughter as well back in
twenty nineteen. You were down onthe court for that just kind of set
the scene for us. Yeah,it was, as you would imagine,
incredibly emotional because anybody who knows Howardyou can't help but love the guy.
(00:49):
I mean, he's just such asuch a good and caring person and in
every way the model of what youwould want in a University of Wisconsin student,
app or maybe more important, everythingyou'd wanted a decent human being.
And then it's just it's unimaginable whatthe family has had to go through coming
up on now five years. Theaccident was in late May of twenty nineteen,
(01:11):
and this is something that has been, you know, in the in
the works, I guess you couldsay for a little while. I think
there's some logistical matters prevented it frommaybe happening earlier in the season. But
to be able to bring him outonto the floor on Saturday, and the
surprise of so many people at theCole Center who were at the game and
(01:34):
the war just the incredible ovation thatHoward got to and to see his teammates
there. I mean guys I've knownfor years and years with you know,
Rashard and Tracy Webster and Michael Finley, Chris Concord and Sean Carland, and
there were others who were at thegame who played honor about that time,
maybe even a little bit before, but certainly know Howard very well. It
(01:56):
was just it was I mentioned iton social media. I mean there are
buzzer beaters and championship moments and tournamentruns. Nothing for me topped what we
saw before the game on Saturday.Yeah, and I wasn't in at tennis,
but watching the clips that were putout on social media too, just
to see Howard's face light up whenhe was rolled out onto the Coal Center
(02:17):
floor. That was just magic andpeople can go see clips of that,
as I mentioned in social media, also at UW Badgers dot com. So
we transitioned from that into the game, Matt. The late season slide for
the Badgers continued. They fell ninetyone to eighty three to Illinois at the
Coal Center again this past Saturday. To me, some of these issues continued
against Illinois, but foul trouble alsowas a big reason why the Badgers they
(02:40):
just couldn't get it done on Saturday. Yeah, they were gonna have some
matchup challenges, to put it thatway, to say the lease and then
with Stephen Krow being so limited,he had, you know, two fouls
pretty quickly in the first half andthat took him out the last ten minutes
of the first half, and thenhe picked up three and four relatively quickly
in the second and a half.So it was a lot of small ball
(03:00):
that Wisconsin had to play in thegame. And Illinois is a really good
offensive team anyway, It's scores inthe mid eighties on average, and it's
been ninety or better here in recentgames, even one hundred plus against Minnesota
in regulation, I might add intheir game earlier in the week. And
(03:22):
then Marcus Damask was terrific. Imean, the kid from Upon who was
very lightly recruited out of high school, had a really good career at Southern
Illinois and ended up obviously in Champagnefor his grad transfer year, and he
was just outstanding, made a lotof tough shots and was a big reason
why Illinois was able to win it. But for Wisconsin it was unfortunately.
(03:42):
Some other story of what what we'veseen over the last month were games that
are either more in the final threeor four minutes, they just can't get
that bucket when they have to,and then more importantly, just can't string
together stops, and once again itcame back to haunt them. Yeah,
it didn't help either that John Blackwellfollowout towards the end of that game as
well. But the Badgers they hadeight turnovers in the game, seven of
(04:05):
those were in the first half, and Illinois scored fourteen points off of those
early miscus. So those are allthings that they just got to get cleaned
up, right, man, aswe head into tournament time. I know
we keep saying that, but eventually, let's hold this is going to come
together, right. Yeah, it'syou know, the total number of turnovers
is low there, but they've becomeglaring when you're not excelling consistently in any
(04:28):
other area. I mean, theysecured the glass pretty well, but Illinois
got some key second chances, andagain that all stands out when you have
games that are there for the takingand you're not able to take it.
So it is. It's a veryweird dynamic with college basketball, where you
know, fair or unfair, you'regoing to be judged in a month of
(04:51):
March, and if this team canfind a way to straighten it out and
make a run, all of thisother stuff is forgotten. But where they
are right now, with the waythey played up through the end of January,
that is forgotten because of the strugglesin losing seven of their last nine.
So yeah, they can still fixit, but at some point you
(05:14):
got to do it and you haveto prove it to yourself. I mean,
you know, forget everybody else, forget the rest of us. I
do think there is it's such athing and I've talked to Charlie Willis and
Brian Butch about it. It becomesbetween the years in these close games where
you expect to be able to dowhat you need to do to win games.
We saw this two years ago,of course, with their remarkable run
(05:36):
of winning these down to the wiregames and route to a share of the
Big Ten championship this year, whereparticularly the last several games were seeing the
opposite. So you know, hopefor their sake, because they've probably got
a couple more close games than themhere that you could find a way to
win those games and then maybe thatcan snowball from there where they expect to
(05:57):
be able to make those plays. At crunch time, talking with a voice
of the Badgers, Matt Leape onIVFM miss Time with Us presented by Middleton
Ford. One final regular season gamefor the Badgers at the Cool Center,
that is Thursday night against Rutgers Mattwho they fell to Nebraska yesterday as well,
So a little preview of the ScarletKnights for us. Yeah, they'd
cool off a little bit. Theyhad a red hot start with the addition
(06:20):
of Jeremiah Williams, who was activatedand Wisconsin caught the really good Jeremiah Williams
a few weeks ago in Piscataway, and Rutgers was rolling at the time,
it had a good little winning streakgoing. There's a lot of toughness there,
especially on the home floor. Theyhave cooled off, but still they
That's the one loss here in theseven out of nine recently for Wisconsin.
(06:43):
That was the one loss that wasn'tin either or game. They got trouts.
I mean, Rutgers jumped on themand Wisconsin was really never able to
make that game very interesting. Quitefrankly so, as much as players night
downplay the payback theme, I wouldthink, deep down feel like they owe
them one. But more importantly, just like you know we were talking a
minute ago, these guys have toprove it to themselves that they can they
(07:06):
can win this game and then takea good heart swing on Sunday at Purdue
and then get yourself ready for thepostseason because they you know, we mentioned
there's still some time to fix stuff, but they're running out of time too.
Yeah, Wisconsin Rutgers tomorrow or excuseme, Thursday night at the Colet
Center. Our pregame coverage with thevoice of the Badger's Matt Leapey gets going
at five. Tip Off is setfor six o'clock. Six o'clock, Matt.
(07:29):
The latest episode of your podcast, the Lear VI and La Pay podcast
dropped last week. You guys aretalking basketball, but professional basketball. Yeah,
we have Dave Kine, guy I'veknown for quite a while, actually
back to it when he was callingVirginia basketball games. You know him through
obviously Tony Bennett, who's a goodfriend of both Dave and myself, and
the voice the Milwaukee Bucks radio voiceof the Milwaukee Bucks. Are just getting
(07:53):
his perspective on what's been an interestingseason, to say the least for the
Bucks. You know, the coachingchange made in the off season, and
then midway through this season Doc DocRivers in there now and obviously they're playing
better, and they're sitting in agood spot and as we speak, second
in the Eastern Conference. So aftera bumpy start under Doc Rivers, they
(08:13):
it seems like things are starting totrend in the right direction. But we
get his thoughts on that and onthe NBA in general, and also back
to you know, the college thoughts. I mean he was he was calling
Virginia when it lost as a oneseed against the sixteen seed in twenty eighteen,
the first two ever fall victim tothat, and then the next year
Virginia won the national championship. Sowe'll get Day's thoughts on just the you
(08:35):
know, the mindset of that programin that time, and it's good conversation.
Good guy obviously a really good broadcaster, a great addition for the Milwaukee
Bucks here these last couple of yearsthat in every episode of the lar v
lape podcast available on your free iHeartradio app or wherever you enjoy your podcasts,
and Matt as of late, we'vebeen getting a lot of Peter Frampton
(08:56):
requests in your honor during my RequestRight Home program, So I think you
dropped that a few weeks ago.And how people they include into that they
know you like Frampton, Well, that's because people have good taste. And
as we all know, Peter Framptonis a finalist for the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame, and because you'reallowed to do it, vote early,
vote often as I am to getthis guy at his rightful place into the
(09:20):
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There we go vote dot Rockhall dot com.
