(00:00):
And just like that we have madethis Monday of fishill. The letter is
out what at one point five Ib a fam as. We welcome in
the Voice to the Wisconsin Badgers.Matt's Lope Mondays with Matt, presented by
Middleton for your good neighbor dealer Matt. So are you sir? Okay Ben?
How's it going? Everything is goinggreat today. It is a Monday,
We're going to be in the sixties. Most of this week's sun is
(00:22):
shine, and so it's all good. Now I want to look back at
yesterday. Wisconsin fell seventy eight toseventy to Purdue in West Lafayette and Matt
Patrick Badger Nation. Excuse me.They may not want to hear this,
but there was a lot of positivesthat came out of that game yesterday.
Correct, Yeah, yeah, it'skind of a weird thing. So like
(00:42):
a hockey, a lot of timesyou hear that one team out plays the
other, but the other team's goaltenderwas great, you know, and you're
thinking, well, that doesn't makeany sense, right, If I'll play
them, you'd win the game. And I think yesterday and for the basketball
team, they put themselves in positionto make a lot of shots, and
they missed a lot of shots.Instead, when I'm talking about when you
(01:04):
played Purdue, when you're up againstthe team with the great seven to four
guy like Zach Eaty, you're gonnahave to hit some threes. And in
today's world of basketball, you're gonnaneed to do that anyway in all probability,
but especially against a team like Purdue. And Wisconsin was five of twenty
four from the three point line, and John Blackwell was two out of three,
(01:26):
but nobody else made more than oneright throughout the course of the game,
and they were good looks. Youknow, maybe two or three weren't
great, but they were open shotsand you gotta make them. And that's
been a big problem for this teamwhen it's lost eight of its last eleven
games. The three point percentage hastaken a big dip, and it was
(01:47):
a nose dive yesterday. But theyyou know, they outscored Purdue and the
paint. They outscored him in pointsoff turnovers, the bench points. It
was a plus sixteen. They defended, you know, reasonably well. And
I say it because Purdue is thebest three point shooting team in the country
and they, you know, forthe game overall, they were their average
about forty nine percent. They're reallyreally good offensively, but you still got
(02:10):
to make shots, and Wisconsin didn'tdo that, even though it put itself
in position with good looks to makeshots and they just didn't fall. Yeah,
And I mean I think that's somethingthat we should take away as fans
of this team, is that theyhad open looks and they just didn't put
the ball in the basket, ifyou will. So that's promising as we
get ready to head into Big Tentournament play. Now. Also, Matt,
(02:32):
something that was positive from that gameyesterday. The Batchers looked better on
defense, did they not against Purdue? In stretches? They did? Yes,
And I say that because Purdue isso efficient offensively. I mean it's
scoring, it's you know, thebest of the country actually going into the
game and it scores eighty five thegame and it to answer your question,
(02:53):
yes, but if you look ata box score, you're saying, what
are these slaps talking about. Imean, Purdue is nine of eighteen from
three and shot forty nine percent overall, which is their average. Now,
they were fifty to fifty from thethree point line, but there were like
forty one percent of the season. That's the best three point shooting team in
college basketball, in Division one collegebasketball. But they were able to,
(03:15):
you know, produce turned it overfourteen times, and the content was able
to get as I said, seventeenpoints off those turnovers, so in stretches.
And the thing is that Butcher andI talked about this and we have
now for the last several games.I guess you could say, this is
not going to all of a suddenbe a great defensive team. But if
it can be a solid defensive team, that could really give this group a
(03:39):
chance to do some things, youknow, certainly this week, but more
importantly next week in the NCAA tournament. But when they don't make shots,
like it's been extraordinarily erratic, youknow, shooting the ball over the last
month, month and a half, now, the defensive warts become more visible.
(04:00):
So just be solid defensive. Theygive yourself a chance knock down a
few more shots. You'll be agreat three point shooting team. But if
you're a decent three point shooting teamagain, you have a chance. You
got to do it. And Iknow fans get tired of hearing about it,
you know, hearing people talk aboutit, but they can't all of
a sudden just start jacking shots, you know, three seconds into the shot
(04:23):
clock. Continue to work the ball, get yourself open looks, and you
just have to have belief that you'vegot guys who have approven ability to hit
those shots, that they could getback into a rhythm again. Yeah,
and coach Coach Guar talked about thatpost game yesterday too, just how happy
he was with the way the teammoved to basketball to get them those open
(04:45):
looks from free point land, whichhopefully they will put in here. As
we look forward now to the BigTen at tournament, Badgers of the fifth
seed. They will meet to thewinner of Rutgers and Maryland Thursday afternoon matison
team. You think the Badgers wouldmatch up against well, yeah, I
mean they played They played Maryland theone time and they made a ton of
free throws against Maryland. That wasa close game here recently, and they
(05:10):
split with Rutgers, uh, youknow, obviously playing them last Thursday.
So it's a you know, we'retalking about the twelfth and the thirteenth place
teams in the Big Ten. Butyou know, Rutgers boat raced Wisconsin.
So I don't know that you know, Maryland. Maryland has surprised me this
year. Ben. I thought itwould be better. Jamie Young is he
(05:30):
is an outstanding point guard, youknow, arguably an All League caliber point
guard. They have other other veterans, but it just hasn't gelled. So
so you know, maybe Maryland wouldbe the lesser of the evils. But
I think if you're Wisconsin, it'sjust you know, be ready. You
played well against Rutgers, especially late, you know, in the second half
last week, and you've beaten Marylandand they played pretty well against Purdue.
(05:56):
So just build on that and andjust take care of your own house.
Yeah, and then hopefully you getadvance and have another shot at Northwestern,
a team that that Wisconsin was ableto beat in January. Yes, so
we will know who the Badgers meetscome Wednesday, that is when Rutgers and
Maryland face off in the opening round, first round, if you will,
the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis.Stunked with the Voice of the Badgers,
(06:18):
Matt Lapaye mondays with matts on IB A F FIM the latest episode of
your podcast Matt with Wayne Larv,Larv and Lapey that is available. You
want to fill us into what youguys tackled this week. Yeah, we
were able to. We we recordedit last week and I still think it
holds up. I mean, wewere talking a little bit about Howard Moore
(06:39):
and his return to the Coal Centerfor the first time in nearly five years,
and the ceremony that they had justbefore the tip off of the Wisconsin
the Illinois game, and just theemotions in the buildings seeing Howard, to
seeing the number of Howard's former teammates, including you know, Rashard Griffith,
who's been so instrumental in help inhelping Howard through this journey of trying to
(07:02):
recover from the horrible car accident backin the spring of twenty nineteen. Michael
Finley, Tracy Webster, Sean carland Chris Conger were all there on the
floor and center court with Howard, and there was so many other former Badger
players who were in attendance, andjust the emotions of that moment and the
meaning that Howard has not just inthe Wisconsin Badgers basketball community, but really
(07:28):
throughout the country. And you knowthe number of national folks who commented on
what they saw and you know, not just around the Big Ten, but
nationwide. So a lot of thatin college of basketball talk in general were
with the Badgers and with Marquettes inGreen Bay and Milwaukee. You know,
the seasons that you know, particularlygreen Bay, the amazing improvement from where
(07:51):
it's been the last few years towhat it is is able to turn out
this season. So a lot ofthat kind of stuff going on. So
it's just it's just Wayne and Ireflecting using a little bit of our experience
and covering covering basketball. So it'salways a lot of fun to do that.
