One to one point five IBYFM Madison'sclassic rock Queen on this back to Work
Monday. Also at Mondays with Mattpowered by our friends over at Middleton Ford
the voice of the Badgers, MattLefey, He is with us, Matt.
How are you doing well man? How's it going? And thing's going
good for a Monday. Now,Yes, the Badgers fell yesterday in the
title game of the Big Ten Tournament. But what run it really was for

(00:24):
this Wisconsin men's basketball team knocking offMaryland, Northwestern and Purdue on their way
to that title game. Lost yesterday. What was your biggest takeaway from the
Big Ten Tournament? Well, Ithink the takeaway was what they were talking
about at the end of the regularseason proved to be very valid where they
really felt like they were playing betterball. You know, the Rutgers game,

(00:46):
the last home game that had allthe appearances it was going to go
right down on the wire. TheBadgers were able to, you know,
kind of break away a little bitin the last ten twelve minutes of that
game. And even though they lostat Purdue, they thought they were moving
the ball pretty well. They justshots weren't falling and sometimes that will happen,
but they like they really they walkedout of Maci Arena a week ago

(01:07):
yesterday feeling like they were starting totrend in the right direction. And you
know, the Maryland game was justridiculous. You know, they could drop
kick shots and they were going tofall against the turfs. And you know,
Northwestern is a really good team backinto the NCAA tournament, and Wisconsin
was able to beat them both inMadison the regular season and then in Minneapolis.
The Perdue game was a classic, actually, and so it was yesterday

(01:30):
quite quite honestly, but for theseguys to beat Purdue, get a buzzer
beating layup at the inn of regulationand Max Klusban hitting the floater in overtime
Chucky Hepburn was just terrific and ajStore deservedly as an All Tournament team member.
I mean, that game had hadeverything. Even though this stuff tends

(01:51):
to be forgotten quickly with the withthe NCAA tournament coming, but I think
those who were in attendance or whotook in the game in whatever form,
you had to be pretty entertained. And the same with yesterday. It's up
and down. I mean, youknow, how often or how long have
we heard the complaints and they can'tscore? They can't score? Well,
that game was up and down, and Illinois is a terrific, terrific team

(02:12):
offensively. Terrence Shannon is you know, I know he's got the legal matter,
but that aside, he is apro talent. And Marcus the mask
out of bull Pond is he's justa stud. I mean a guy who
is at Southern Illinois and then finishinghis college career at the University of Illinois.
Those two guys, when they getgoing, they are very very hard

(02:32):
to stop, as Wisconsin unfortunately foundout on two occasions this year. Yeah,
and you brought up Chucky. Hepburnthere, and I hope Bager Nation
really paid attention over the weekend inthis Big Ten tournament. Chucky showed how
valuable he is to this team. But Matt, I really want to focus
on an Ahja's store. He reallyseemed to come into his own this weekend

(02:53):
in the Big Ten tournament and hopefullythat can translate into the NC two A
tournament here coming up starting. Well, it's more noticeable because more people are
watching college basketball right now. Buthe's had stretches like this where he he
can just be electrifying. He canget out in the open floor. Now
you know everybody was struggling with onthis team, it's seemingly everybody and in

(03:16):
the month of February. But whenhe can get out into space, he's
obviously an incredibly exciting player to watchand a very dangerous player for opposing teams.
But it's also fair to say Benhe's still learning. He's still learning
the game. He's on some stageshe hasn't been on before. You know,
Saint John's was bad last year, and and you know he transfers here

(03:39):
closer to home, but he's fromRockford and he's still I think the exciting
thing about him, you look bigpicture, there's he can still be so
much better. You know, he'smaking some strides defensively, but that's still
very much a work in progress. But you know that's to be honest,

(03:59):
people love all. You know, there have been rules, tweaks, and
you named the sport to try toincrease offense. And he is such a
good athlete. If he continues todevelop his outside shot and continues just improve
in every area, just with thefundamentals and all of that, I mean
this guy's going to be in lineto have a heck of a long career

(04:23):
ahead of him. So but nodoubt he's fun to watch. If you're
even a casual fan, your channelsearching and wiscontinent is on. You know,
he can't say, well, histeam is going to win fifty eight
to fifty. It's a team thathas an explosiveness, and a guy like
aj Store is as explosive as anybodyin the Big Ten. Talking with a

(04:43):
Voice of the Badgers, Matt Lapeeand Ibaf, we find out last night
to Badgers they are the fifth seedin the South Region of the nc two
A Tournament. They will face thetwelve seeded James Madison Dukes, who were
thirty one and three. Matt theHill from the Sunbelt Conference. I know
you guys probably got home kind oflate last night if you had much time
to kind of scout James Madison here. Yeah, yeah, getting into them

(05:05):
started, you know, digging alittle bit deeper a little bit last night,
but a little bit more and morethis morning. Still a lot for
me to learn, So I'm notgonna everybody's an expert right now in the
NCAA Tournament, even though We're reallynot, but they did. They come
in. You talk about teams comingin playing well. They've won thirteen in
a row. They made news onNovember sixth, opening night, they went

(05:29):
into East Lansing and beat Michigan Statein overtime. I mean, that's the
if you're just looking down their schedule, that is the marquee win. They
beat Akron in the middle of Februaryof Akrons is a very good team out
of the Mid American Conference. Butthis is one of those teams that when
you see these mid major polls comeout, they're ranked really well. They're

(05:50):
ranked high, a thirty one winteam. They're not a big team,
but they've got some athleticism. Aguy named Terence Edwards, a very athletic
wing. He's six y six, slender, but he can shoot it.
He's you know, good off thedriving, off of ball screens. He's
a problem. They and they doget up and down and it's another team

(06:12):
that will score. They're in themid eighties, you know, along the
lines a big picture of an IllinoisPurdue might play a little bit differently,
but it's look, this is thein this in the NCAA Tournament five twelve
games. That's where a lot oftimes the twelve wins. And I think
James Madison is going to be asexy pick. I would like to think

(06:34):
if Wisconsin can continue to play theway it hads here in the last week
or so, it should be okay. But you know this is I think
it's we talked about it during theyear. It's very muddled outside of the
very best of the best in collegebasketball and seeds aside, it's the matchup.

(06:56):
How do you play water your strings, where are you've vulnerable and how
does that compare with the team you'replaying. I think this sets up to
be an extremely interesting game in Brooklyn. Yeah, and as we all know,
no matter what sport it is,players always look for that chip on
the shoulder, if you will.People picking James Madison hopefully helps the Badgers

(07:17):
as well. As we look forwardto their matchup Friday night to open up
the NC to a tournament in Brooklynthe Barclay Center. That came. We'll
tip off at eight forty. Ourcoverage here on IBAFM starts at seven thirty.
Max Safe travels out to Brooklyn andhopefully when we talk next Monday,
the Badgers are still alive sounds good. Yeah, trip to Dallas would be

(07:38):
nice, but a long way togo first, So yeah, we'll talk
to you next week. Then quicklyquickly forgot I wanted to ask you this
too. The college basketball transfer portalopen today. How exciting and how just
nonsensical is that? Yeah, itcontinues to be pretty amazing. The calendar,
you know, football is you're tryingto make some adjustments with that.
I mean you had Lou Tickle andevery other coach outside of the playoff wondering,

(08:01):
Okay, who's leaving? Who's leavingmy team? As I try to
get it ready for a bowl game. This is just it's it's mind boggling,
quite honestly. But yeah, it'sit's one of many things. It's
so it's so weird then because youknow, out the games are still pretty

(08:22):
awesome, you know, it's aswe saw in Minneapolis over the weekend or
any number of other games during theseason, and then when the buzzer sounds
and then you're like, oh,yeah, so it's who's leaving, who's
going? You've got teams. Acouple of programs are skipping out of the
n i T because they want tosay Okay, they want to get their

(08:43):
roster built or rebuilt. You know, guys are gonna leave your team and
maybe you can bring a couple inthe portal. It's just, uh,
it's it's amazing to me. Imean, I love college basketball, I
love college athletics. There's still alot to love about it. But it's
still amazing to me what the peopleinvolved in the game to hurt their game.

(09:07):
So maybe at some point some morecommon sense will prevail. But if
you're a coach, you just gotto deal with it. This is the
calendar, these are the rules. You can bitch about it all you want,
but you also got to deal withit. The coaches are smart,
they understand that. All right,I will let you go on that note,
but I had to ask you aboutthat. How excited you wear for

(09:28):
that? Because it's just unbelievable tome? So you know what ben real
quick, It's like the NFL.I mean, I've had people tell me,
and I think it's true that rightnow, in the NFL, with
player movement, a lot of peopleget more excited about that, oftentimes than
the games themselves. So the collegegame is starting to take that model.
The difference is in the professional game, they actually do this kind of stuff

(09:52):
when the season's over. You hopethe college guys will maybe figure that out
eventually too. Yes, we canonly hope. All right, Thank you
