(00:09):
All right, everybody hear me,okay, Um, thanks for coming everybody.
Obviously, trade earlier today Riley Smithfrom Vegas in exchange for Vegas' own
third round pick next season in twentytwenty four, and then the selection of
Brandon Yager at fourteenth overall tonight,So um and two important parts of business
(00:34):
for the President of the Future,UM much in the way that we've kind
of mapped the Selton plan to doit, and so exciting day for us
and looking forward to contuning that tomorrowand then later this week. So on
that note, I'll turn it overfor questions. I just about Roy.
(00:57):
It's only been this week. Obviously, Vegas was quite busy, um until
a couple of weeks ago, andI've then enjoy their celebration and then obviously
start to start to get to workon their offseason. Kelly and I have
a very good relationship, and sothis week we started to have talks.
We think Riley's a great fit because, um, you know, he's He's
(01:19):
extremely reliable defensively, in addition tobeing able to produce very reliably over twenty
goals and fifty points in nearly everysingle season. The last number, especially
with Vegas and then coming off winninga Stanley Cup and being in a really
important part of that can kill penalties, can play left wing in right wing.
UM, we did that in theplayoffs four Vegas, and we view
it to kind of be able tointerchange him throughout our the top of our
(01:42):
lineup. So UM, with thecost being what it was, obviously this
is a strange market for that,we just thought it was something that was
too good for us to pass up. And we're very excited about them.
Talk about UH for us with withBraden, he was in a mix of
players that we were really hoping wouldwould drop down to fourteen seth. So
(02:06):
the things that we like about himare that, you know, he competed
as a center in a really difficultdivision against Winnipeg, against Regina, against
Saskatoon and all really high quality teams. Uh. They won a playoff series
and they fell to Winnipeg along theway in the second round, but he
had to go against really difficult competition. He doubled his assist total year to
(02:28):
year. But I think more importantlyUM, in addition to his production,
was the way that he played defensively, the way that he drove possession out
of his own zone. Um playedthe whole rink, skated through the middle
of the rink, with able tomake plays, able to be the defensive
conscience of his line while also stillproducing offensively. The scouting staff was very
excited about him, and Um,we were thrilled to be able to get
him at our pick. Yeah, probably think we'd wind hopefully. You know,
(03:07):
it's impossible to predict. I wishI could, but it seems like
it's going to be quite busy.It could also be one of these situations
size where you're expecting a lot andthen it maybe it goes a little slower
than it has the last couple ofyears. And then we started to see
that a little bit last year,as you know, big time free agents
went until August thought the top ofmy head where they were still unsigned,
(03:28):
and especially now more and more teamsas the years have gone on, their
salary cap spaces starting to dwindles. At the same time, you have your
own young players coming up you wantto resign and keep. You see a
trade like the Winnipeg and Los Angeleswon this week where it's a good young
player, really good young player gettingmoved and Winnipeg doing great on their return.
It's those win win type trades forthe great young players and then the
(03:51):
trades where you usually expect to paymore get more for the more established guys,
and so we we thought we doingour move today was better than waiting
until free agency. And because theterm in dollars on Riley, We're right,
Sue, So what was the tradeof Oh, the Smith trade?
(04:14):
Okay, sorry, thanks Taylor. We're still having conversations with all of them.
It's it's you're trying to have conversationswith them respecting of what they've done
for the franchise in the past.At the same time trying to get a
bead on as different trades happen indifferent teams fill their needs, what the
demand is going to be for allof your own players. With regards to
the Smith trade relative to Jason,I think we want to continue to build
(04:35):
our depth, so we'll continue toengage with Eustace King and O two K
and his group about it. Itcertainly doesn't close the door. I understand
how important he has been to theteam and it is to the group.
So if there is a solution there, as we kind of stort through it,
we're at it's certainly not closed atall, Thank god. Would you
get any call? Yeah, therethere there were calls, I think,
(05:02):
especially as you get down that thereare always calls that kind of come in,
but um, nothing that really movedus to want to move away from
from taking break. Yeah, whatis this thing? You You can now
start putting your vision which is builtfor the present the future. Which yeah,
(05:29):
it's it's the whole month has sortof been, um, you know,
building up to this week. Dan, it's you know, getting ready
to meet the staff. Um.You know, there's some great people on
the staff, and Andy Socier andEric Heasley have been a massive support.
And earlier this week we were youknow, we hired Jason. Jason can't
be involved in the draft or freeagency, so um, well we'll look
(05:50):
forward to having him be fully onboard in mid July or whatever was the
negotiated date on that. Um.But you know, we earlier in the
week we filled our our need onthe salary cap side with Fuki Mapufu from
the La Kings, And so we'restarting to put the staff together and seeing
the staff grow and then also youget to actually execute on on the different
(06:11):
planning and different things for the tradetoday and then the draft pick. And
I think I think it's great forthe staff as well, because it's obviously
a little bit uneasy. There's beena lot of change and trying to actually
get here and do work with eachother and experience everyone worse together. It's
it's been it's been very enjoyable.Kyle, with the selection of his position,
(06:39):
you trying to build a center deathyour organization as well. I think
you're always trying to build your centerdepth. But he was. He was
simply the top player on our boardat the time we picked um which I
know is the biggest cliche and andall the sports where there's drafts, but
that was just a reality and ifif his position had been different, that
wouldn't had no impact on us.It was. It was all good.
(07:00):
It's it's much easier to fill thosepositions in the draft. But now we
have to get to the development partand turn it over to Tom Gastopolis and
his staff and have them get towork with them. It would be supe
(07:27):
And also do you play this summermore? Um So the first question,
Rob, I think that until wesign a player or they sign elsewhere,
that's there's just time that we canuse so UM, you'd like to have
a clear indication, but there's somany unknowns in the whole marketplace that it's
(07:50):
it's it gets a little bit toughto do that UM overall. But I
think every every day and every tradethat happens, you learn a little bit
more about what's happening in the marketplaceand how that's going to affect your cap
dollars, different opportunities that are outthere for you to use your salary cap
dollars UM. You know, youknow, you know, particularly with some
positions as other teams that you knowhave them available start to fill them,
(08:13):
how that's going to impact supplying demandand so we're focused on that as well
and just trying to get a goodread on it UM. And then with
regards to our Hockey Operations department,I think the way that I kind of
put things into buckets where you know, with Vooki, who wanted to get
him in and get him hired androlling because it's an important time for the
salary cap contract, CBA compliance peoplewith the rest of it. I kind
(08:33):
of in my head it pushed itto July fifth, which is the our
development camp will end. And thenwe'll get to focus on building out the
rest of our hockey operations department andour people along the ground in Pittsburgh.
(09:00):
I think with regards to generating offense, I think we want to You always
want to be a great team offthe rush. You want to be a
great team in zone through whatever methodyou're going to play in zone, cycle,
driving, play to the middle, and then you want to be a
great team defending the rush and defendingall those things. So I think it's
safe to say that we're trying toimprove every single thing about the about the
group. And with the acquisition ofRiley was more how would he fit with
(09:22):
our with our players that currently arealready on the roster, Danny so Um,
All of those things were considered, yes, but I don't want to
get too deeply into them because thatcould kind of tip our hand for other
stuff. That's great. See there'sthose big names and a lot of former
(09:46):
players. Sure, it's a sortof point Papa's big. Sure, I
think Josh the well, what whatyou've seen happen is teams with their younger
players especially, they want to getthem locked in for you know, eight
years right at the end of theirentry level, and it's sort of you
(10:07):
know, depletes what comes, whatactually gets the free agency, and I
think now you're seeing a lot more. I think this is just I don't
know this for certain, but itfeels like players want to sign sooner and
get locked in and that there's justmore available in trade. And I think
that's frankly a result of the capjust staying flat and teams needing to adapt
(10:28):
and adjust and be able to finda way to be compliant while also remaining
competitive. Thanks everybody,
