Speaker 1 (00:04):
And welcome in. This is a public affairs program shedding
the light on the interest, issues and concerns of the
greater Pittsburgh Areia. Good morning. My name is Johnny Hertwell,
your host, and today we're going to be talking the
Children's Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center and they're
Shake your Booty's Gala that is coming up on May tenth.
Let's say hello to Bethany Burrelson, Program relations Good to
(00:24):
see you again. How are you?
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I am doing great?
Speaker 1 (00:27):
How are you? I'm doing good. I'm doing good. And
Taylor Doser, director of Development, I haven't seen you in
a while. Where have you been?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Just just been around?
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, really you're back. You lefty came back up.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Can't stay away from the mission.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
It really is. It is a fabulous mission. I love
talking to you guys because it is such a vital
part of Pittsburgh and it's been around for over a century,
and you know, I love educating people about what you
do and get them excited about this fabulous event that
you have coming up in just a couple of week.
So I don't know where to start. Should we start? Now,
(01:02):
let's start with the gala because if people know are
familiar with the with the organization and may or may
not be familiar with the gala, tell us everything we
need to know about Shake your Booties.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, So, Shake your Booties is taking place on May
tenth at Rivers Casino. It is the Children's Homes largest
fundraiser of the year. Helps raise critical funds for the
children and families that we serve through our programs. We
have a d. D. Kinkhamwalla who will be our host
for the third year. She's CBS Sports reporter.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Well, this is the second year you've had it at Rivers, right, yes, okay,
So is that upstairs?
Speaker 3 (01:38):
It is upstairs in the event center.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yep, okay, all right, yep, and it's coming up on
May tenth. Now do you need tickets? Can you buy
tickets there?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
You can buy tickets online through our website, So Children's
Home pgh dot.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Org, backslash Shake your Bodies but it's syb yeah, okay, yes, all.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Right, And we have VIP tickets available which include a
really special experience that's going to be a little different
than our previous years.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
What's the experience?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
So the experience is that you get a signature gift
when you come in, there will be exclusive raffles and
prizes and auctions. There will be live speed painting by
Cody Sable which you'll be able to bid on that
auction item and then.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
And Cody has done quite a few does a lot
of charity events and it's always a special painting and
really cool something or a real cool gift. If you
is it being auctioned off.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
It'll be yes, it'll be auctioned off or raffled off
at the event.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
And what else.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
We also have entertainment from jazz singer Jessica Lee during
the VIP hour. There will be cocktails and some more
special little surprises.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
And of course it goes to a great cause.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
All right, let's go to Bethany. Now, tell LUs let's
start with the history of the Children's Home.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Absolutely so, the Children's Home is over one hundred and
thirty years old. We like to say that we are
the best kept secret in Pittsburgh, but we really don't
want to be. So we started off as just an
adoption program. Now today we are six programs strong. The
adoption program has grown from just infant adoption to adoption
(03:23):
from foster care. So there are three thousand kids in
the foster care system right now, just in Pennsylvania, So
that's really where our adoption program focuses on. We have
our Pediatric Specialty Hospital, which is a stepping stone from
an acute care hospital like children or a labor and
delivery hospital like West penn or McGee, and we train
families on their children's on their child's clinical clinically complex
(03:49):
care and get them home. And the best part is
no family ever leaves with the bill. So these families
who are going through some of the hardest times in
their life, we take that financial burden off of their shoulders.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
So let me let me stop you there. You know
the Pediatric Specialty Hospital, how does that compare to Children's Hospital?
Speaker 4 (04:08):
So Children's Hospital is one of our biggest partners. A
lot of the children who admit to the Children's Home
come from there. But we are different, We serve a
different purpose where we are a hospital in a home
like setting. So we are training families on the equipment
that their child's going to go home with. So instead
of a hospital grade you know, ventilator, we are training
them on their home ventilator system. Or if a child
(04:30):
just got a G tube we're training them on how
to care for that gtube or if a child is
a poor feeder and no longer needs the ICU setting,
we are training them on how to care for that
child and get them home.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
You know, as a father and you're bringing home a
child that is that is just difficult enough. And then
you have a child that has special needs or you know,
has you know is a premium or something like that,
it's even more traumatic. Now you have to figure out
how to work a feeding tube and all that. So
it's kind of a transition, you know. So you kind
(05:05):
of help parents, kind of guide them way of giving
the care that they need to give their children.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Yes, so our clinicians, from our PCTs to nurses, to
nurse practitioners to our physicians are empowering these families to
be the expert in their child's care.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Now, you work with Children's Hospital, but you're completely separate.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
We are.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
We are an independent nonprofit and we have a very
unique model where we do the fundraising and grant writing
to make sure no family.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Leaves the hospital with a bill. It's very different.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Children's Way tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
Yes, Child's Way is our daycare for medically fragile children.
So it is the only one of its kind in
the state of Pennsylvania because we are duly licensed by
the Department of Health and the Department of Human Services.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
It's staffed with teachers and nurses.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
So while the kids are getting you know, this medical
support that's so necessary for them, they're also getting the
very best possible education and getting dispa time with their
peers like any other kid.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
And then you have counseling services as well, and that's
fairly new it is.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
It used to be a program just to support adoption,
pre and post adoption counseling. Now it is a full
service counseling agency for children, individuals, couples. And we're having
an open house on June twelfth, so everyone's welcome to
come and see our new counseling suite.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Oh absolutely, because I've worked with you guys over the years,
and you've done this program many many times, and I've
been to shake your booties. But it wasn't until I
was able to go into the facility and see with
my own eyes what exactly you do in seeing all
the you know, all the people that work there, interact
(06:44):
with all the children and things like that. It just
kind of it's an eye opening experience.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
It is much different to see it in person. It
makes a much bigger impact than just hearing it on
the radio. So anybody listening, if you'd like to come
out and tour, please just stop by and either take
and myself would love to tour you around.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
So what day is that? It's June twelfth?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
You said, yep, June twelfth, from three thirty to six thirty,
I believe correct.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Now do you have to call in and make an
appointment to do that or you just know on that
day you can just show it up.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Just an open house to show our new counseling suite
and talk about the services that we're going to provide.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Well, tell us a little bit about the new suite
then great.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Yes, So there are each counselor has rooms specific to
their specialty. So we have a room specific for pediatrics,
for play therapy, a room specific for couples, and then
we have a family building pathway within the counseling program
that really deals with families looking to build their family.
So whether that's if they've lived at infertility journey or
(07:45):
if they're going through dinner conceived process, we're just there
to walk along alongside them in that process.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
So all right, so this is how many years have
you done the Shake your Booties over thirty? Oh okay,
I fairly new to the program. I think I moved
like ten years. So but it's a big dance party
and it's a your it's your largest fundraiser, right it is.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
And speaking of dance party, we're going to have totally
eighties the band Oh.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
God, I love Liz. Who's going to be party. She
is the Fabulous's They're wonderful.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Yeah, And this year is special because we are doing
an inaugural award. It's called the Rita Carrie Neil and
m d Memorial Award, which is named after one of
our board members, Randi Ferguson, her mother who was the
first physician at one of the first physicians at the
Children's Home. And we will be honoring not only our physicians,
(08:39):
doctor Beverly Brown and doctor Kate Yoder, but we're also
going to be honoring two physicians from UPMC, doctor Sarah
Rubin and doctor Bridget O'Donnell. So this is something new
for us and we're really excited to celebrate all these
physicians and the work they do to support the children
at the children's home.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
That's only one part of the gala. The real big
part of is the is the fun, the dance and
that you have. You just said, totally eighties got to
be on board.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Totally eighties will be there. We will have a silent auction,
a live auction, we do.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
We're having a Do you know what kind of auction
items you have yet? I mean, it's got to be
here before you know it.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
We have Let's see, we've got lots of alcohol we have.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
She was, She was like contemplating, how do I say
this delication adult beverages.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Yes, we've got adult beverage packages we have We're gonna
have like a mozzarella pulling class experience. There's a pasta
making experience. There are, of course tickets to the many
museums in Pittsburgh sports attractions. So we have a Steelers
package that includes game tickets, training practice or training camp experience,
(09:56):
getting stuff from the River Hounds, from the Pirates, all
of the sports teams in Pittsburgh. So we've got an
array of stuff. We've got art, we've got jewelry, we've
got adult beverages, lots of things in the auction, and
then we also will have what we usually do as
a wine toss with this year we are lucky to
have Tito's sponsoring, so we're having a Tito's Toss where
(10:18):
you throw rings and you can win an adult beverage.
And then we'll also do our mystery bags as well.
You pay twenty dollars, you get a bag and you
don't know what's inside, but it's always something exciting.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
And it's coming up on May tenth, May tenth. What times?
What times does it start?
Speaker 3 (10:37):
If you are a VIP it starts at six, If
you come as a general mission ticket holder, it starts
at seven, okay, and it last days day. Something else
we should talk about to do is we also do
fund the mission, which is if you're not interested in
purchasing an auction item, or maybe you don't win the
live auction thing that you'd like, you can always fund
(10:59):
the mission, which are different levels that we present that
support our mission directly. Perhaps one thousand dollars supports of
family staying in the Family Living Center, so different things
like that where your money goes directly towards supporting sort
of like an item at the children's home.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
So this is one of your biggest fundraiser. Speaking of
the mission, Bethany, what is the mission of the Family Home?
Speaker 4 (11:23):
So our goal is to strengthen, empower and establish families
through all of our programs. Like I said, we started
with one. Three years ago, we had three and just
in the last three years we've grown to six and
we don't plan on stopping. Our goal is to really
identify gaps in the healthcare system and where families really
(11:45):
need the support and continue to support them in any
way we can.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Now one of those gaps that you've recently decided to
tackle is pediatric view.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Yes, and so this is kind of cutting edge, and
this is something that you know as it's Pittsburgher's. We
take pride in the fact that we're innovative. We are
we're on the cutting edge of a lot of things,
especially in medicine, and pediatric view, in my opinion, is
one of those cutting edge technologies. Can you tell us
a little bit about what that is?
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Sure, our director, Christine roman Lancy would do a much
better job than I am going to. But a pediatric
view was already established before it came to the Children's Home.
It was established in nineteen ninety nine and then came
to us in twenty twenty one. It is led by
doctor Christine Roman Lancy and the.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Pros are real firecrash.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
She really she is just a pioneer in this industry
and she continues to be so for years to come.
But she along with her practitioners, they work with children
who have something called cortical visual impairment, which is a
brain based visual impairment. And these kids can have a
normal eye exam and what's really cool is they can
(12:54):
look just so many different ways and uh, there, what
they're seeing kind of looks like a kaleidoscope. So there,
I can be healthy. Their brain is not processing what
they're I is seeing. It's very difficult to make out
images in front of them. So with the correct interventions,
(13:14):
their vision can actually improve, which is what Christine and
her team do. They work with these children and they
work with their school systems to help them access what
they need in order to make the world around them
more visible to them.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Yeah. So a lot of these kids are misdiagnosed as
autistic or something like that, or on the spectrum of
something like that, and then there's something that they can
detect that it says, Okay, it's not quite that, but
this is what it is and this is how you
can deal with that kind of Yes.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
Christine actually developed the tool that measures just measure, measures
the child's functional vision who has critical visual impairment, and
it shall tell you know it many times does get
missedied diagnosed as autism or ADHD with those interventions which
are so important for kids who do have those diagnosis.
(14:09):
A child's vision is never going to improve if they
have CBI instead of autism or ADHD. So it is
very critical to have the right diagnosis, which her team
does not diagnose, but they can really support an ophthalmologist
or a physician's diagnosis with the assessment that she does.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
We're spending some time with Bethany and Taylor of the
Children's Home. They're shape their booties. Gala is coming up
on May tenth. You can get tickets at Children's Home
pgh dot com backslash no, no, which what is it?
Speaker 4 (14:38):
It's Children's Home pgh dot org backslass syb.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Thank you for correcting me, but get your tickets for
the event now. We talked about the adoption and Children's
Way and in pediatric view and your counseling. But it
really essentially it started out as an adoption agency, right,
so let's look is that still your core? Is something
(15:04):
that is core to the Children's Home.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I think it always will be for sure.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Our adoption program, like I said, was our founding program,
and it helped us identify so many other needs of families.
So yes, it's fair to say that it is our core.
But at the same time, we're putting just as much
energy in all of the other programs that we have
at the Children's Home.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Well, because it's core, tell me a little bit more
about what that program does.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Sure, So, like I said before, we used to really
focus on infant adoption, like that private adoption, and we
still do that somewhat, But the need is really in
foster care right now. So our director, along with all
of the social workers in the program, help identify kids
who need forever homes. We help train foster families and
(15:52):
educate them on the process, and support them with counseling
services while they are in that process, and help kids
or carefine there forever home.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
And if somebody is interested in maybe pursuing an adoption,
how do they contact you.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
So they can go to our website, Children's homepgh dot org.
If they click on services and go to adoption. They
can either fill out an inquiry form or they can
call us directly and we'll get them to the right person.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Okay, all right, And all these programs that we've been
talking about all gets fund by these fundraisers, and one
of their fundraisers is the Gala. Now, what is this
year's theme.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
This year's theme is masquerade, So we are it.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
Could be I could be at the Gala and you
will never know, correct, my fancy masquerade mask.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Yes, we are encouraging masks. If you're VIP again, you
will receive a mask when you arrive, so you don't
have to worry too much about planning that. But I
think that will be a really fun kind of aspect
of the event.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Maybe one question I should ask is you know what
do you wear to the to the Galla?
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Sure, I would say this year is more formal. In
the past, we have had kind of you know, eighties
events and seventies events. This year, I just say we're
kind of more formal this.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Year because of it's elevated. Yes, with adult beverages exactly.
All right, So for people just tuning in tell us
everything we need to know about the Shake your Booties.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Yes, Shake your Booties is on May tenth at Rivers Casino.
VIP hour starts at six pm. General admission starts at
seven pm. This is the Children's Home of Pittsburgh's largest
fundraiser of the year. Our goal is to raise three
hundred and thirty thousand dollars. If you aren't able to
(17:52):
attend and you still want to support, you can text
the word give give to three four five three four
five to make a donation Today.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
I got a slow down. I can't write that fast.
What is the number again?
Speaker 3 (18:06):
You? You would text the number three four five three
four five and you will text the word give G.
I v E the number again though, three four five,
three four five.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Three four five three four five. Yeah, I'm a little slow.
I would never go toto math. The numbers were never
my thing. And you can give whatever the amount is
so you can you can support the Children's Home and
in uh. Do you have any major sponsors involved with
the with the galop this year?
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Yes, we have incredible sponsors who support us year after year,
and we do want to extend our appreciation to those sponsors.
So we have high Mark Health who came through UPMC
Children's and upmc McGee Women's. Who Bethany mentioned are some
of our partners PJ Dick, Trumbull and Lindy of course,
the Mario Lemux Foundation and Westinghouse. So thank you to
(18:55):
all of those sponsors, as well as many more that
you will see when you come to the event.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Now, is there any other local businesses if they want
to get involved? Is it too late to get involved
with the gala or or maybe other events coming up
throughout the year.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Yeah, it's it's honestly never too late to get involved
with the Gala. Maybe maybe just you know, not the
week before, but even even up until that time, we're
still accepting donations for our auction.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Taylor's a busy girl. If you're listening, then you want
to support the Children's Home, do it as soon as possible. Yes,
we have.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
We have ads available for our program which are great
for small businesses.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
Floor graphics that's new this year, which will be really
fun if you're a small business and looking for a
budget friendly way to advertise where he can showcase your
business with a floor graphic this year, which is really cool.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Now, what other other than the Gala. What other fundraisers
do you have throughout the year.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
So we do our radio fon with iHeart, which is
wonderful and that will happen next year. We just had
that this past February. Yeah, this past February.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
We do.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
We do appeals throughout the year where we will be
seeking donations to support our programs. You can always make
a donation through our website, so that is Children's Home
pgh dot org. And there is a section on our
website that talks all about how you can make donations. Again,
you can donate any time if you want to text
(20:31):
the word.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
Give did two three four three four five three four five?
All right, hold on, hold on, let's edit that out,
hold on, hold on three four five three four five okay,
all right, Johnny candleern And then we mentioned earlier about
the open house coming up on June twelfth.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Yes, that is a free event open to the public
where we will be doing a I've been cutting for
our counseling space and kind of launching information about how
we are offering counseling to the community for both children
and adults.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
And it really is a game changer when you go
and you visit the Children's Home because once you once
you see what they do and the expansive things that
they do, it really changes the paradigm of what you
might think of the Children's Home because you go, oh wow,
this is an amazing facility doing amazing work, and they
(21:31):
have so many different programs and it kind of solidifies
everything that you guys do. So if you have an opportunity,
if you have just five ten minutes to go to
the open house and see what they do, it really
is an amazing experience. So again, contact the home or
if you'd like to go to the open house that
you're at. What's what are the hours for the open house?
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Three thirty to six thirty?
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Wait, you guys did that? I feel like I was
in stereo there all right, starting at three thirty. So
but again, really the reason why they're here is for
the galla that is coming up. It's a It's masquerade
this year. If you want to do the VIP experience,
it starts at six o'clock. General emission starts at seven o'clock.
Plenty of raffles, they got entertainment. What else am I missing?
Speaker 3 (22:22):
We talked about totally eighties will be doing the entertainment
for the evening. We're also honoring one of our families,
which is going to be really special. So we are
going to have a parent, Raven and her twin babies,
Genesis and Genevieve that she will be talking at the
event and kind of just explaining her experience at the
(22:43):
Children's Home, which is really special to hear from the
families that.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
We That really cools as that heart strikes. Yeah, yeah,
all right. We only have a couple of minutes left,
so Bethany, in three minutes or less, I need you
to tell us everything that the Children's Home doing. Good luck,
because it's almost impossible to do everything to mention everything
that you guys do, So good luck.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
All right, thanks.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
So, the Children's Home has six programs, all supporting children
and families. You can ask Taylor and myself who absolutely
love our mission.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
But you don't have to work there.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
To get involved with our mission, you can volunteer, You
can a ton, shake your booties, you can show up
for a tour and or just make it a donation
by texting give to three four five three four five.
There are so many ways to get behind this mission
and support the children and families that we serve. So
please look us up on Children's Home pgh dot org.
(23:36):
If you want to attend the gala, it's Children's Home
pgh dot org, backslash syb or stop by and we'll
be there to give you a tour.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
As she mentioned earlier, it's been around for one hundred
and thirty years, so I can't understate how important this
organization has been to Pittsburgh and has touched so many families,
the parents, the kids, and so you're seeing century. I
mean like you have multiple generations being touched by what
you guys do.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Absolutely, so we'll have volunteer groups come in who will
point out, you know, a little of crocheted square that
they created for their child when they were in our
hospital and now their child is thirty years old, or
you know, it's amazing to watch the impact that the
family's experience can have just being in our center and
(24:30):
having been cared for by our team of clinicians, or
in Child's Way daycare, or you know, been adopted through
the Children's Home and how it has changed their life
for the better.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
So it's a really amazing organization.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
All right, I'm going to give Taylor the final word
because we want to get people to the gala. So
tell us everything once again, what we need to know
about the gala coming up on May tenth.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Yes, so shake your booties. Masquerade is on May tenth
at Rivers Casino. You can purchase tickets on our website
that's Children's Home pgh dot org, backslash s y B,
or you can call us for one two four four
one four eight eight four and just ask any questions
(25:16):
you might have. We will be celebrating the families and
children that benefit from our programs. We are celebrating our physicians.
We will have entertainment from Jessica Lee in our VIP hour.
We will have Cody Sable doing speed painting live. We
will have Totally Eighties providing entertainment throughout the evening. We
(25:37):
have host add Kinkumwala who's going to be our MC
for the evening. We will have silent auctions, live auctions, raffles,
mystery bags, Tito's Toss, so much fun. This year Masquerade theme,
