I'm Ron de Monts. At firstthere was big energy. Then there

(01:29):
was sexy Sultrey Ah with I heardSports and not Work along with Jennifer Hammond
from Fox Cos He's arisen from theAshes. God, you were really sick
when you came back from San franYeah, you're feeling better. There was
Simes, trains and automobiles. Ifeel better. I feel better. You
saw. I mean, I meanto be because there was physical illness and
then there was emotional devastation. Well, I would imagine, because I have

(01:53):
to be honest. Once the Chiefswon, because I used to cover that
team, I was like, ohgood, all right, let's go Lions,
Let's go. I know because thenI could see my friends hang out.
Hollywood wanted their sequel. And thenwhen they were up seventeen at the
half, I'm checking the weather inVegas, I'm like, oh my god,
I don't have to go buy somenew clothes. Dude. People were
booking flights. Flights were like Ithink they were like yeah, three thousand

(02:15):
dollars at halftime, and then afterthe game they were seven hundred and then
the bottom fell out. Now itseems to me so long ago, but
yet it really it's just eight days. Yeah, it hasn't been that long.
But I thought I had to aska friend, my friend Bruce,
and he goes, I haven't talkedto you since a lion's loss. I'm
like, God, that seems solong ago. So there are seven stages

(02:39):
of grieving or something like that,I believe is the say, as the
saying goes in life. And obviouslyI'm not trivializing death and relating it to
a lion's loss. However, Itraveled, worked and traveled like a crazy
woman from Sunday morning when we werein San Francisco at the NFC Championship game.

(02:59):
We did pregame early in the morning, but we did a run up
right before the game, two hourpregame on Fox two. Then we did
the game, did post game forabout ninety minutes. After then we shuttled
out. Did red Eye from SanFrancisco, flew all the way across the
country to Washington. Did you wearnationally? As we flew by in the

(03:21):
middle of the night. Landed atseven twenty. We were supposed to get
on an eight thirty to connect homeby ten am. As soon as we
land in Dulles, we find outour flight is delayed four hours. You
were stuck in DC? Yeah,so, uh, what'd you do?
Had a little brunch, I hada little breakfast, had a little mimosa.

(03:42):
So what time did you stand?I think we landed at two thirty.
I walked in the door at fouro'clock. And and so, so
as as the day is going,I'm so exhausted, and I'm thinking about
the travel and just trying to getthrough and maintain and keep my energy up
to put one foot in front ofthe So I'm not thinking about the loss.
I feel pretty good. Finally geta good trying to stay awake long

(04:05):
enough to get a good night's sleep. So I go to sleep. I
wake up Tuesday morning, and I'mgoing to admit something that I don't admit
often. What I cried. ReallyI cried over the lions, and literally
I think some of the words thatI just kind of like sputtered through my
snot in tears, was they shouldbe going to the super Bowl. Well,

(04:28):
you would be in Vegas right now. Yeah, And I'll tell you
on Saturday that was a hard conversationI had with myself, like, Okay,
as sick as I am right now, would I be able to get
on a flight tomorrow go to Vegas? So I'm I'm not glad I didn't
have to consider it, but okay, sod out, Okay, you were
there and take us through. Imust like, I'm still dumbfound like I'm

(04:49):
I'm driving in my car. Thisis like all last week, and I'm
like, I can't believe they lost. I think the collective state of Michigan,
maybe a lot of the country feltthat way, you know, I
mean it was it's it's the waythey lost. Yep. That really they
beat themselves. They were the betterteam, and they beat themselves. They

(05:12):
were running right through that San Franciscodefense. I mean, they were carving
them up. They were doing anythingthey wanted in that first half. And
then I think the second half andI'm like, did they forget how to
play? You know what the hardestthing about that loss, in my mind,
was not just for you know, obviously the fans and everyone who had

(05:35):
invested so much, but I dofeel as if getting past the Niners was
really the big hurdle. I feellike they could have matched up pretty well
with the Chiefs, and maybe I'mjust nai beat them because they already beat
him once. Bobby probably wouldn't beathim twice, and they didn't have Travis
Kelsey or Jones, right, andChris Jones. Chris Jones some big difference,

(05:59):
right. But gosh, it's toughto watch this week, isn't it.
No? I like it a lot. I still love it. I
don't get the peel I'm not watching. Yeah, no, I'm watching you
to shut up. No, no, no, I just I just can
though you can tell you one butI disagree with that. I'm not watching.
I'm like, of course you're goingto watch because to me, I

(06:21):
heard somebody say they were watching thePuppy Bowl instead of the Super Bowl,
which, okay, loser. It'skind of cute, though, I watch
it for pure entertainment only because Iwatch it for the commercials because the game
usually is not that great, right, I mean last year, the Eagles
had a huge lead and then Igotta be honest, I fell asleep.

(06:42):
I woke up and the Chiefs werecelebrating a Super Bowl isn't it funny?
I can't always remember how it goes. The one that sticks out most vividly
in my mind was the Atlanta Falconsblow. Oh yeah, that one in
the bed, that one, Imean they right? And then of course
I watch for the halftime. It'susher Uh and I said the commercials,
so every it's all entertainment for me. I enjoy the entertainment aspect of it.

(07:05):
Yeah. How about Taylor Swift's justgoing to kind of breeze in there
from Tokyo. What time is shelanding? I'm still obsessed. I could,
though I did not like her Grammysnub of Celine Dion. They hogged
afterwards. They did, yes, yes, that was kind of taken out
of cons okay, because they werehogging a huge backstage. But I thought
it was funny because I was listeningto Travis Kelcey and his brother who I

(07:27):
adore. His brother I do too. I love him. I loved him
shirtless to the window. He canhang out with us. He is fab.
But I was listening to exactly.I was listening to their podcast and
uh, and Travis goes yeah.I was telling Tay and I'm like,
okay, name tay. She's justa girl. She is just just a

(07:54):
girl who's kicking ass. Yeah.So anyway, Uh, I will be
watching the Super Bowl. Many peoplewon't. And you know what else I'm
kind of annoyed with. What areyou annoyed with? Well, there's a
lot of things that we don't havetime, but can you singularly? But
I don't like the fact when peoplesay this was not a good like they

(08:15):
like, it's not this was agreat season for the Lions. Oh you're
telling you? Wait, who saysthat? Why I'm hearing I'm hearing in
the in the in the universe. Are you listening to talk radio sport?
When I start hearing, I turnit off because I'm like, that is
the dumbest thing I've ever heard. How could you say this wasn't a the
Lions didn't have a successful season.Yeah, somebody caught me. Somebody caught

(08:37):
me listening to sports talk radio lastweek and they're like, stop, turn
it off. You're gonna be depressed. And I was, well, it's
it's amazing. Well, it's amazingto me that people are still talking about
this game. I think we willuntil when free agency. I think there's
gonna be some things. I thinkthere might be some milestones that help us

(09:01):
get over our seven stages of grieving. Yeah, I'm not grieving like you.
I didn't. Well, I didn't. That was just one day.
Okay, okay, this is mytime you cried in the season. In
my defense, I was starting toget sick. I was getting very ill.
Tuesday was my last day of worklast week until Monday, so Wednesday

(09:22):
Thursday were my days off. Andthen I was sick for three days.
And I mean like flat out inbed, sleeping for ten hours. Nike,
well ned, and I'm sorry youwere sick, but I'm glad you're
better. Thanks. I love apity party, but I I I have
no idea. I'm at a lossfor words because I kept thinking about this

(09:46):
game, and I feel like we'restuck back in time. Do you know
what I mean? Like we needeverybody needs to get over it. We
need closure, all right. Howare we going to do this in Sage?
I don't know. I I thinkthe roster burn it down. Brad
Holmes talked yesterday. I think thatwas it. But I want to play

(10:07):
something that Dan Campbell. I'm not. I don't want to get into everybody
wants to blame Dan Campbell. Heis partly to blame for that long blame,
but it's all incomplete culpability exactly. You know, there are certain things
maybe he should have done. AndDan Gamble, what did you call him
by the sword? Died by thesword? Yeah, Dan Gamble, Dan

(10:28):
Gambles. I love the gambler though, but I also feel, you know
what, go get a kicker youcan trust then I just I'm gonna stick
by that. I don't think hetrusts badly. I'm sorry I would agree
with that, but he said somethingafter the game that stuck with me.
When he's talking about was this afterthe game or the day after? This

(10:52):
was I believe the day after?Okay, so you have time, you're
taking your on a red eye backand he had this to say, and
it's a lesson learning. Look,I told those guys this may have been
only shot. Do I think that? No? Do I believe that.
However, I know how hard itis to get here. I'm well aware,

(11:13):
and it'll be it's going to betwice as hard to get back to
this point next year than it wasthis year. He's absolutely right, because
people are gunning for you you're you'reNFC North Division champions. The division is
not going to be as easy nextyear as it was this year. Schedule
gets harder exactly, division gets tougher, target on your back exactly, and

(11:35):
not everything is gonna be see tome, the offense, it was Frank
Gregg. Now what's is he goingto come back or is he going to
retire? I cannot see that manretiring. But he had a lot of
injuries this year. He played thenails. But anyways, a grizzly men

(11:56):
don't walk away. He is.He's tough. He's a tough dude.
He is a tough say it,he's a tough son of a gun.
But I agree with Dan Campbell. But I think when Brad Holmes, first
of all, when he walked into the presser at the end of the
season yesterday, he first wanted togive a shout out to the fans.

(12:16):
I don't think there's any debate thatwe have the best fan base in the
world. Uh, the hands down. I don't care what anybody says.
He was talking about across the worldthat this that this fan base because they
travel and they really you know.Uh. He was energized on Monday.
Yeah, he had, he hadgone after it. I think he went
and got the double the quadruple espressoshot that h Campbell gets the DC gets

(12:41):
every day at Starbucks or whatever.Oh yeah, I seriously think he went
with him for coffee. I wasso like when I was listening, I'm
like, what the hell am Ilistening to? Could you see mc DC
walking in? Oh? Brad,Yeah, I think I'm gonna eat my
coffee this morning. Don't want tomeet the media. Do give him a
coffee? So you heard Dan Campbellsay, may not get back here next

(13:01):
year. It's not going to beeasy. I think Brad Holmes wanted to
make sure the fans knew this isn'ta one off. It's only going to
get better. Okay, We're onlygonna get better, all right. I
don't want anybody to think that thiswas a one shot Cinderella magical journey that

(13:22):
just happened. No, it's real, all right, this was This is
exactly what it was supposed to happen. Don't get spooped this spring by speculation
or negative talk or you know, the the entertainment news feed. Don't get
spooked by that. To not thinkthat we can't build and sustain what we've

(13:45):
been building. What do you thinkabout that? So I didn't hear that
entertainment newsfeed portion of it because hewanted, now, that's interesting. He
wanted to make sure that everybody knew. It's what they're doing. May not
get the clicks, it's the sexythings like oh, Jared Goff's not going

(14:05):
to sign an extension, or they'renot going after this free agent or this
or that. He wants you toknow that they're working hard and they're going
to go with the best guys thatfit this organization, and for the fans
not to worry that they're just notsitting back. See, I don't read
into that. That's not what I'mreading and hearing him say at all.

(14:26):
I think what he is saying iswe are built to last. This is
a sustained mind, right. Buthe's saying, we have young guys,
We've got guys. We're going toresign. Pinnay Soul he's going to get
a new or Jonah Jackson he's goingto get a new contract. Golf he's
going to get resigned. They're goingto keep their key core pieces. This

(14:48):
is not a one off, asyou said before going into that clip,
Brad Holmes wants people to be patient. He wants them to understand that we
are built to last. He thoughtit was I think he said he hated
Cinderella, right, He's like,I hate that term Cinderella. I think
that's a little bit more of thenational narrative of what's going on with what

(15:09):
the Lions are on. It tookthirty two years for them to get back
here. Oh yeah, and hedoesn't he wants you to know it's assured.
It's not taken another thirty two years. Like you said, we're built.
But I think in terms of entertainment, what they're going to be doing,
they may be quiet. So don'tread into that. That's what he's
saying. Don't read into that thequiet quiet in free agency. I think

(15:33):
quiet in free agency may not youknow, because he said at the beginning,
they don't have the money. LikeI will say, one thing I
really like about Brad Holmes that hesaid last year when people started to pick
apart, maybe some free agent movesthey may not have been approaching or or
looking into, he said. Andhe made a point of saying, we've

(15:56):
resigned free agents, but there areguys. We know them, we know
what they do. Who was oneof those guys? Was it last year
of the year before Alex Angeloni? What did they get out of him?
A lot, a lot, rarely, rarely, rarely. Tracy Walker probably

(16:17):
won't be here next time. Bye, Cam Sutton. They signed him for
three years. He should take awalk. Sorry he got but they've They've
definitely got some business decisions to make. They have some business decisions to make,
and I think the biggest decision andthe most important is the Jared Goff
extension, which is going to getdone. Absolutely. I don't see any

(16:41):
world where it doesn't get done.Quarter I also want to know it will
get done. I also has oneyear left anyway. Also firmly believe that
Jared Goff loves Detroit, loves playingfor Ben Johnson. But I can't imagine

(17:02):
that he won't be a friendly partnerin negotiations. W Matthew Stafford at one
point, well, let's hear whatJared has to say about that regards to
my future. It's not up tome. I love this place and we'll
see what happens as time goes onhere. But yeah, I love this
place and love Dan love all thecoaches, love all my teammates, and

(17:29):
it's not out of my hands insome ways, you know, it's it's
up to my representatives and obviously thepeople upstairs. Absolutely that's why they representatives
come to the table. Going backto the whole coaching situation too, when
I told you I was in tearstwo days after the loss, I was
out shoveling my heavy wet snow, very pathetically, like in my pajamas and

(17:49):
boots, with running down my face. My neighbor, my neighbor JD saw
me. It was I was adisaster, and we're talking about I said,
I heard that the commanders ordered clipsof Ben Johnson from the Lions,
meaning they were set to hire him. And literally I was so depressed.

(18:14):
I was like that that really hitme that it was thinking they were going
to lose Ben Johnson. That's whyI felt like the window could have lowered
a little bit, well, notclosed, but lowered a little bit.
Not ten minutes later, after Jadfinishes, his driver goes in, I'm
out there still shoveling, pathetically wipingaway my tears, and he yells Pallisero's

(18:36):
reporting Ben Johnson's staying and I literallyI was like what. I just flipped
my head around and jumped up andI shoveled so fast, and I was
so excited and I was so happy. Well, like it changed my whole
mood. I think I heard DerekGoff screaming from my house. Good you.
I'm sure you're doing it because wedon't live that far from each other.
Love it when it was announced thatJohnson was sated. But I think

(19:00):
it's so funny about all the likethe gossip that's coming out about why he
turned it down. Oh why whatgive me the So there's there's you know,
everyone's reporting different things. So oneis that they were mid flight.
They didn't think he had a goodinterview, they didn't like his interview,
and of course I'm hearing he's veryarrogant Ben Johnson and all that stuffs around.

(19:26):
Okay, So then they were flyinghere to interview him in person,
because you know, when you talkto somebody over the phone or through you
just you need to see them inperson. And he called them mid flight,
sorry I'm staying. And then itcame out, and then it came
out that he felt that they weremore basketball. They didn't know anything about

(19:48):
football. They were more basketball peoplethan football people, and they felt that
Ben was very arrogant, and youknow, so there was an And also
it came out there was no guaranteehe was getting that job, the commander's
job or the Seahawks job for thatWell, they would have been dumb not
to hire him. And I stillthink he's going to be a number one

(20:10):
candidate next year. Well he's young, he's thirty eight years old. Yeah,
he's a great guy. He's agreat offensive mind. Well again,
I don't know if he's going tobe a leader of men. Allah,
Dan Campbell, you know you carethose coordinators that are just coordinators. They're
really good at their job and notgood head coaches. May he rest GUNTHERA
Cunningham was that way. He wasa great coordinator, but not a really

(20:33):
good head coach when he was atthe Chief. I love, by the
way, it is a true storythat he found out he was fired on
the internet. Gunther did Yep.That's very terrible. I know. But
people were like, oh, thatdidn't happen. Gunther told me, yes,
it did happen. I chased WayneFounds home in my car when he
was fired. I was so young. I drove by Jim Caldwell's house when

(20:53):
I heard he was gone, heyMarty morning wig and fighted us all in
like when he got fired. Hehad like a little press conference on this
front porch and then invited us infor he and his lovely wife Lindsay,
Oh my god, it was thenicest. You know, another one who
did it to Alvin Gentry like oneof I know you and I both adorn
Alvin Gentry, hell of a man. Well, when Jerry Stackhouse got traded,

(21:14):
he invited us into his house.Yeah, god, but I love
Jerry's love these trips down memory lane. Yes, Tack's a great, great
dude too. Loved him, Yeah, so great. He was a little
misunderstood when he was. I goby how they treat me, and he
was always so nice to me.I believe it's how you see them treat
like the person who parks their caror picks up the towels, things like

(21:37):
that. It's the it's that, you know, it's the different classes of
like the elite pro athlete and theguy who's doing the laundry. How do
they mingle? How did they callexactly exactly? I totally agree because I
remember when I moved to Kansas Cityand I started covering the Chiefs. I
introduced myself to everybody. I thinkhere who I don't care who you know,

(22:00):
your people, you're You're just tome. Everybody is a somebody.
Everybody's important and I and I stillbelieve that today. It bothers me.
It's like, you're not you're aperson. I'm a person. I don't
care what you do or who youare. Treat everybody positive energy just feels
better around you. Yeah, anduh, it was great. I talked
to everybody anyway. You know,it's just who I am. I,

(22:23):
you know. Back to this BenJohnson thing, though, I think the
first the first connect on getting backwas him returning a g coming back.
Absolutely. I don't think Aaron Glennwas ever leaving. I don't for I'm
not sure that he was, butI do love that he's coming back,
and I like what he did withthat defense. He he he improved it.

(22:45):
The guys played for him, theylove him. They they got to
the NFC Championship game. Let's justsay that freaking unbelievable because I know,
well, first of all, you'relistening to the same old podcast I'm around
to Moss with High Heart Sports Networkalong with Zach Jennifer Hammond The Wonderful Jennifer
Hammond from The Wonderful Zach Too.He knows Fox Fox two. I know

(23:11):
about what Zack's gonna do in Vegas? What are you gonna do in Vegas?
Are you gonna go to the brothels? Don't get married? Don't get
married? Are you gonna go tothe bunny Ranch? Is that still around?
What the bunny Ranch is that?Hugh Hefner, No, No,
that was Vegas Bunny Ranch. I'venever heard of the bunny Ranch. You've
never seen that. It was likean HBO thing. It was called the

(23:33):
Bunny Ranch. Are you sure you'renot thinking of Bugsy the movie? No,
google the Bunny Ranch Bugsy anyway,So what are your plans? Was
a bunny you have? Do youdon't eat? Don't one dinner reservation?
Are you going to see any shows? I got food poisoning once. I
ate an in and out Burger atlike ten thirty am, and I was
barfing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway byfour o'clock in the afternoon in the press

(23:57):
box. That's a trip was heinous? What so this is. Yeah.
No, this is a vacation andI literally don't even plan what I eat.
I just am going with the flow. Are you gonna drink? Of
course, but I don't know whatI'm going What you drink of choice?
Zac, I want to know whatyour drink of choices? It depends on
the day, but normally Friday.Hey, my birthday is Friday, probably

(24:19):
jack and coke. Aquarius. Yeah, I said on savory things about aquariums.
That's why I was looking at you. That's okay. My son is
an Aquarius, my stepdaughter's an Aquarius, and my brother was an Aquarius.
Oh yeah, it's a heavy sign. Emotional. Yeah, it's an emotional

(24:41):
I didn't realize that emotional. There'sa whole lot of and this is the
this is the dawning of the ageof Aquarius this year is I mean,
this is a big yeah. Right, I love you for that. I
feel like next time we should justhave bourbon and snacks. Call it a
second. Okay. A week fromtoday is spring training. You're heading out

(25:02):
to Lakeland. I'll be there. What's happening with the Tiger? I haven't
even paid an ounce towards the Tigers. What do you mean they're going to
win the division this year? Areyou kidding me? Oh my god,
you are living the world of we'regoing to ten dollars right here, you
are, ship, They're not winningthe division, all right? Ten bucks
right here, and we're gonna play. We're hitting they the off season that

(25:26):
I know your boy tork got engagedover the off season, didn't he,
torkleson, Yeah, didn't he.I have no idea I have somebody did.
I haven't been out to co America. I've been, No, I'm
talking about last season. I wentto see a mighty lows. I've been
to see a few games personally,but I haven't covered. I tell you,
I love baseball. Is my favoritesport to attend. No NBA basketball

(25:52):
and football and NHL because hockey isso pretty to watch in person. I
do love hockey in person. Playoff hockey, yes, exactly, playoff
hockey. Okay, but baseball. And here's another thing I went to.
I like to sit in the hotsun and drink a cold beer, crack
nuts, and how about a bigdouble teak tequila, although they're like twenty

(26:15):
four dollars in the time tech bigdrinker. But any who, Okay,
So I was at Pistons last weekand I ran into David Montgomery and the
only thing I could say was I'msorry, And he said he loves Detroit.
He loves Detroit, he goes,we'll be back, loves you.
But I love this Lions team roundNow, that was the first I'm buying.

(26:37):
This is the first game I wasback since they we're two in one,
they've only won four games. I'mbuying it like games stop first quarter
twenty twenty Lions. Yep, Iam buying. I am all in on
the Detroit Lions. I am allin on Dan Campbell, I am all
in on Brad Holmes, I amall in on Ben Johnson. I am
all in on Aaron Glenn. Iam all in on JG. Pay the
man is money. This was themost magical Lions season ever. Do not

(27:00):
let one loss, Sully, Youdon't be a hater. If you would
have, if somebody would have saidto you at the beginning of the year,
we're gonna give you this, youwould have been like, take my
take my car, I'll do it. Okay, I'm man, Are you
done, I'm done? Okay,we're done too. Just my positivity,
just need to dispray some positivity. We're coming back. We're coming back.
We're talking about more. There's toomuch, there's too much left unsaid for

(27:22):
us always. I just want tohear about Zax. Can't we have a
follow up episode on Vegas he goesback. I want to hear all the
stories. Are you gonna what ifhe comes back and you can't remember?
That's like the hangover? If Iwin some money, I'm not coming back.
If you come back with a bigfacial tattoo, I'm gonna be worried.

(27:45):
Hey, at the end of theday, are you going to go
to the sphere and see you too? No? That's like last Yeah,
that's expensive stuff. Are you gonnago see any shows like anything you want?
Blue Man grew Like, do youeven know what's there? You're just
like you just bought a ticket.I'm going to Vegas. Do those guys
with the Tigers still play Vegas?Or No? They didn't. They're dead

(28:07):
done. They're both dead. TheI'm so sorry Sick Freed and Roydick Roy
I think royd one died a whileago and the other died a few years
