far into the fourth core did?Did you write your loser article? It
(01:32):
certainly looked that way until really reallylate. No, But I'll tell you
what, Ronda, I wrote thisform my little inside the Lions column too.
I think when the Bears had achance to really put their foot on
the Lion's throat when they that fourthand one, the third and one,
they didn't get it. Then theykicked the field goal on fourth and one.
Yeah, fourth and less than one. Really, that was the same
(01:53):
situation, almost the same situation asa week ago when Dan Campbell went for
it on fourth and two. TheBears didn't go for it. They kicked
a field goal that left the dooropen for the Lions. And it was
right then where I started scratching myhead and said, you know, maybe
this is going to be a Lion'scomeback. Maybe. Even though that next
drive, you know, Chicago marcheddown the field again, they kicked another
field goal. It was something thatMatt Eberflus did not coach to win that
(02:16):
game, and I think that's abig part of the reason why the Lions
came out with that victory. Well, you know what's interesting is because Justin
Fields was coming off the field wantingto stay on the field, wanted to
go for it. If you watchedhim, he was like no, you
know, no, no, andI was like no, and they kicked
the field goal. And obviously theLions came back and beat the Bears thirty
(02:37):
one twenty six and proved to eightand two for the first time since nineteen
sixty two, which is quite impressive. But I have to say, first
of all, just a couple ofthings, because we'll get to the comeback,
which was quite impressive. But thenagain it's against the Bears, who
are you know, just don't knowhow to win. They don't yet.
(02:59):
But they were better better than Ithought, I mean, you know,
just yeah, he was running forone hundred again and the defense played pretty
well. And granted some of thatwas the Lions you know, own unraveling,
but I think the little bit ofcredit Fields may have found a little
something before he got hurt. Hewas throwing the ball pretty well, and
so maybe maybe there's a little somethingthere. I'm not ready to say he's
the quarterback of the future in Chicagoyet, especially with the draft capitol we'll
(03:21):
have this year, but maybe they'rea little bit better than we gave him
credit for last week. Right,But Justin Fields, come on, he
has over three hundred yards rushing againstthe Lions over three games, you know,
dating back to last season, soyou know he's always gashed the Lions.
But I have to say, DaveJared Goff looked awful. Three packs,
sacked twice. Defense couldn't stop anyone. And I'm sorry, do they
(03:46):
not know how to tackle? Well? Field is tricky? I mean games
they've looked terrible. They don't wrapup. I mean it was it's like
what are we watching here? Yeah, look, I think you're right that
coming out of the gate, right, they really struggled to defend Justin Fields,
and it took them a while toget used to the speed that he
(04:08):
was playing with and just sort ofwhat he could do in the open field.
And I thought it was going tobe another you know, sort of
like last week, another game wherethat defense was going to let the Lions
down. But round I will saythis that fourth quarter, the defense came
up with four huge stops. Thefirst one was that that third and you
know short play when they stuffed fieldsfor no gain on the quarterbacks snake held
(04:28):
them to a field goal. Thenext drive, again Chicago went down and
then iber Fluz got conservative with hisplay calling three straight runs. Lions stopped
them on a third and five Ibelieve it was held them to another field
goal. Then they had their firstthree and out of the game. The
next possession, even though came Suttongot beat deep on that one pass that
the fields couldn't connect on, andthen they had the sack fumble. So
there were as bad as the defenseplayed early, four big defensive stops late.
(04:53):
And I give the defensive line somecredit because look, we've held their
feet to the fire when they haven'tbeen able to get sacked. Aidan Hutchinson
got there at the end. Thatdefensive line came up big on that fourth
and one play, and so youknow, let's give credit where credit is
due that that those guys made someplace in the fourth quarter when they really
needed them, after Chicago left thedoor open for them to come back,
right you're listening to the same oldpodcast. I'm Ron DeMoss with Highard Sports
(05:16):
Network along with Daber Katt from theDetroit Free Press sponsored by Victory Lanes with
oil change a couple of things.First of all, the Bears, but
the analytics ninety eight point eight percentprobability to win, Okay, yeah,
absolutely, Then happy for the win, not how they played. Would you
(05:40):
say that's a true statement for theLions. Yeah, absolutely, yeah,
without a doubt. I mean, you know, they realized that they're not
going to be able to get beatgood teams the way that they played.
And look, you mentioned Jared Goffand the interceptions. He threw three.
Two of them weren't his fault orone of them wasn't his fault, right,
The one was sam laid An interceptionas your fault. Well, look,
(06:00):
Ronda, when Samuel Porter collides withthe defensive player and he doesn't get
to where that ball is going, that's not really Jared Goff's fault. The
one that was tipped. The thirdinterception that's probably on golf. So that's
why I say it wasn't Maybe itwasn't. Two that weren't his fault,
but you know that one was tippednot quite the same as the second one.
But the reality is he could havethrown two more picks like the backers
(06:23):
dropped two other interceptions. One wouldhave been a pick six. So this
was not Jared Goff's best game. But two minute situations he delivered. And
that's against the bad team. Atleast you can get away with that,
right, and that's really all thatmatters. But he has five picks in
the last four games. That's notgood. But okay, so he got
(06:43):
booed, Okay, I mean boom. So here's Jared. I thought this
was pready talking about getting booed afterthe game. I get it. They're
upset. I'm upset. You knowthey can they can be upset, and
Boot's all right. But yeah,I think the expectations for a team are
higher than they've ever been. Andyou know, we want to win homes
in front of our home fans againstyou know, division opponents, and today
we ultimately did that. We didn'tget there on a straight line, but
(07:05):
we ultimately came out with the W. And again it's a testament to how
tough and you know, courageous weare on offense and defense. And really
that's how that matters is they gotthe wing, but he didn't play good
and he got booted and he shouldhave gotten booed. And he seemed to
say that like he seemed to say, you know, I get it,
even though maybe he didn't appreciate itor didn't like it. And Dan Campbell
(07:26):
said the same thing, that youknow they get it though, right the
expectations here in town, and hesaid he didn't hear it. You can
go please, like you can't hearthe booze at Ford Field. I thought
the more prominent booze were when theycame out the first of their last ball
on first down. There were somethere were some pretty audible booze there.
They didn't fans did not like thatplay call. I didn't like that play
(07:48):
call either, but I guess, you know, you take that to gain
some positive yardage and make sure you'rein position to pick up a first down.
But look, the reality is,Randa, you know this. You
know, expectations have been ratcheted uphere in Detroit, and fans have always
looked at if somebody plays bad.As much as fans love their players,
they've always let them know that. And I think especially now in a game
(08:13):
like yesterday is where it was amass exit when they were down and then
all of a sudden they came back. But the funniest thing is the PA
announcer or whatever was asking, youknow, oh it's quiet, fans start
cheering, and I turned to someoneand go, you know, the fans
(08:33):
should look at him and go,shut up. We did our job.
Maybe they should do theirs, youknow what I mean? Like they did
their job because the Bears had acouple of what delay delay of game off
side, you know what I mean? Like, so yeah, one false
start to delay games. I thinkit was right. Yeah, really did
their job and they were not happythat the Lions weren't doing theirs. But
(08:58):
anyway, go ahead, Sorry,no, I mean you know, ultimately,
you know when when you have ateam like the Lions that's eight and
two now seven and two yesterday, and they're in position to, if we're
being honest, you know, earnthe number one seed in the NFC,
and you can't let a game likethat get away against the Bears. And
to their credit at the end, they didn't. But for a long long
(09:18):
time yesterday, for probably fifty fiveminutes, it looked like that game was
going to slip out of their graspand they would lose a game on the
Eagles who play Monday night and theforty nine ers, who you know,
now that they're healthy, look like, you know, one of the best
teams in the NFC again, andyou know, for a team that has
legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, you justyou can't let a game against a bad
Chicago Bears team slip away. Andthat's what fans sensed, and that's why
(09:41):
they let out their emotions, andthat's why they booed Jared Goff and the
rest of the offense. And thenall of a sudden, everything was right
with the world again when they cameback and Golf performed his magic late in
the game. Right, But Iwill go back to again, you can't
play like this in the playoffs andthe last two weeks they haven't looked great
well, and I mean, youknow that's it's been different parts of the
(10:05):
team, and so I think that'swhen you talk to Dan Campbell and you
talk to people in this locker room, why they still feel like they're so
much ahead is because they haven't putit together right. The defense was the
one that really let them down.Against the Chargers, and then yesterday it
was the offense with the turnovers andspecial teams. The defense wasn't so hot
either, well, they weren't round. It was both offense and defense yesterday,
(10:28):
whereas the week before it was adefense that let him down, and
this week against the Bears it wasboth. Well it was but again at
the end of the game, Ithought the defense played, you know,
after they settled in against Justin Fields. Now look, Fields runs for one
hundred yards third straight time against theLions. As you mentioned, you know,
that's not a recipe to win.And the Lions certainly had their struggles
(10:50):
with him early on, and theyhad their struggles against the run in general.
And maybe that's you know, alittle bit of a concern because this
was such a good run defense. But you know, I think that the
defense once they sort of realized thespeed that Justin Fields was playing at,
and Jack Campbell had some seemed likehe had some mistakes with his eyes early
on, and then he settled andhe played pretty good in the second half.
(11:11):
You know, there were a coupleof penalties that kept alive drives on
Brian Branch, who I thought playedreally good aside from those penalties. Those
are the little things that when theygo back and they they think about what
this team can be, and theysay, look, without that, right,
without the defensive struggles against LA,without the four turnovers that they had
yesterday against the Bears, you knowthis, that's why they feel so confident
(11:33):
about where they're going and what theycan be. But you're right, You're
not going to win a game inthe playoffs with a performance like that.
And it doesn't matter. It doesn'thave to be a team like the you
know, like the forty nine ersor the Eagles. That could be your
first playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. You're not going to win that game
either with four turnovers. How aboutJamison Williams huh a touchdown? Yeah,
(11:54):
two big catches. It was good, It was good. But here I
want you to I want you tolisten to him after the game. But
I just planned on getting a lotof more wins, a lot of more
touch downs for my team, makinga lot of more players for my team.
This is just really the beginning forus. We ate and too,
we ate too. Yeah, we'retrying to We're trying to keep it going
(12:16):
and getting the playoffs and do bigthings in the playoffs. So really we're
just trying to keep these going. He's just another step on the on the
on the ladder. We got acomplete so he get to the top.
Okay, forget about that play Let'sdiscuss his eating habits. You like him
or not. You like his eatinghabits or not. Well, he goes
to Mickey D's and uh he hadlet's tell the people, he had a
(12:41):
double cheese burger, and on topof that double cheeseburger he put an Oreo
mcflurry a dollar or a scoop.I'm sorry, I don't get it,
but Zach said he was and triedit. It was phenomenal. David,
Oh, come on, yeah,so good. I wasn't expect but it
was. How couldn't that be tastegood? First of all, it melts
(13:03):
and it makes everything soggy. It'sthe sweet and salty and it's perfect.
Okay, I understand an Oreo mcflurrydipping your fries in the Orio mcflurry,
but not putting it on a doublecheeseburger. And I'm telling you, Dave.
Social media was in a tizzy overthere. So I'm curious what Jamison
(13:26):
puts on his turkey for Thanksgiving.I don't even want him milk and asking
the locker room this week. Uhmaybe uh, And I forgot about it,
but I'm like when I saw that, and I'm and I don't get
it. I don't know if hewas doing it just to do it,
you know what I mean, orthat's that's what he likes to eat on
(13:46):
a regular basis. You know,I don't know if somebody forget the oriole
mcflurry? Does he put a milkshakeon top of the double cheeseburger every time
he goes to m My colleague JeffTitle from the Free Press, he brought
up a good point too, likehow do you even begin to attempt to
do that? Like like do youaccidentally spill your mcflurry on your burger?
(14:09):
Like what is the plant that getsyou to to start eating your burger with
mcflurry on it? Because that wouldn'tlook I'm a dipper, right like I
dip my you know, biscuits inin gravy if we have it, or
sometimes I'll mix some things together,you know, not I don't, I
don't do anything. I don't thinkit's weird at least, like no,
no, vegetables and fruit and meatand everything concocted in one. But I
(14:31):
don't I don't mind trying some differentthings, but a dessert and a hamburger
that just I don't know. Itdoesn't really, I don't know. It
strikes me as a little bit weird. Yeah, I don't have any weird
food concoctions, Like I don't addanything weird to food, So I don't
know when I see that. Ilike to enjoy my burger, she's burger,
(14:52):
and I like to enjoy my shake, and I like to enjoy my
fries. I don't care if theytouch. It's not putting my milk shake
on top of my freaking burger. It's disgusting. The soggy part, that's
what would get me. Yes,the texture of it would not. Yes.
But hey, man to east theirown and you know, maybe maybe
(15:13):
that's what gives him his wings manbecause he can fly and is a as
I like to call him, alovely weirdo. He is. He's a
lovely weirdo, you know, andthat he walks to the beat of his
own drum. And uh, heplayed much better yesterday. And I think
maybe Dave, could you say he'smaybe finally getting it. I think he's
(15:37):
done some good things here for theoffensive late. You know, he had
the touchdown catch yesterday obviously ran pastEddie Jackson, the block, the blocking
you know two weeks ago in thetouchdown, and even the third down catch
he had on the Lions two minutedrive at the end of the first half
when he took a shot in theback right as he caught it. Like,
that's a big play and that's aplay that I'm sure a lot of
people came away thinking, Wow,he didn't drop that. And so we're
(16:00):
starting to see some signs of JamisonWilliams contributing to this offense. And look,
he's still not and it's okay tohold him to this standard, right,
he's still not delivering like a numbertwelve pick of the draft should you
know, a season let's just callit a season into his career because he
missed so much time last year. But that said, he does look like
(16:21):
he can be a functional and importantpiece to this offensive puzzle going forward.
It's funny that you say functional fora twelfth round pick. I mean,
do you realize how that sounds.I do. But you know, again,
like there was the start of theseason and the amount of drops that
he had. I think people werewondering, like, will the Lions be
(16:41):
able to trust him this year? And certainly they've used him in big situations
the last two games, two minutedrives, end of game drives where he's
been on the field, and notonly been on the field, they've targeted
him with passes and he's delivered well. Right, And that's a big thing,
Dave is the trust issue, whichhe hasn't quite earned all the way
(17:03):
yet it's getting there and he's lookedbetter. And I really do hope he
comes along because I kind of likehim. He's quirky, I like,
I like the kid. I hopehe does well. I really hope he
gets it, grows up, andyou know, learns to eat like a
man. Anyway. Hey, butdon't stop. If that's if that's part
of what makes him fast, keepdoing it, because that guy makes who
(17:26):
You are eating a mcflurry on topof your double shipsburger, More power to
you. Who am I to judge? You're listening to the same old podcasts.
I'm Ron Jams at Ihard Sports Networkalong with Dabercat from the Detroit Free
Press, sponsored by Victory Lane, quick oil change. Okay, so let's
go around the NFC. So theViking's lost. I'm surprised at the Broncos.
(17:49):
That's not going to be such aneasy game for the Lions. Fully
expect that to be a Saturday primetimegame. Now, that's one of about
you know, five six games thatare in the mix to be flex to
that Saturday. And look, DanCampbell against Sean Payton. There's obviously an
interesting storyline there too. And theone thing the Broncos have done is create
a lot of turnovers. I thinkthe Vikings had three yesterday. It's been
(18:11):
a little bit of an issue withJosh Dobbs. And so if you're the
Lions two and a half game leadnow in the division, with you know,
the Vikings having played one more game, so essentially the Lions can be
three up if they continue winning, they're going to have this division wrapped up
before Christmas. Round up. Ohyeah, Cowboys won. They's seven and
three nine ers looked great, prettyperfect ascerrating under fifty eight point three.
(18:34):
That's impressive. Hey, it's thatis a different team when they're healthy.
Deebo Samuel has been back. TrentWilliams has been back. I still think
they are the best. See,don't know that they're going to be the
number one seed, don't know thatthey're going to get the you know that
they're going to have home field throughoutthe playoffs. But if the Lions have
to play the four nine ers,Look, I think it's key for the
(18:56):
Lions to be the one seed sothey don't have to be both the Eagles
and the forty nine ers. Youwant those two having to play each other
so that way you only have onetough game to get through in the playoffs.
Yeah, and then Seahawks lose tothe Matthew Stafford in the Rams,
and look, it's still a littlebit of a ways off. I mean
it's not you know, the Vikingsright now are the seventh seed, and
(19:21):
you know it's gonna take a littlebit for them to hold of that spot.
But it's not out of the realmof possibility that the Lions and Rams
play in the first round of theplayoffs. Matthew Stafford coming back to Ford
Field. Imagine all the storylines withthat. The Rams are four and six
right now, like the ninth ninthseed in the playoffs. We're not gonna
(19:41):
hear about Matthew Stafford. We're gonnahear about Kelly Lee. I mean,
her podcast would probably must listen tothat week. But look, they're the
They're the nine, the number nineteam. Right now, seven teams make
the playoffs. Obviously they're nine. They are a couple games behind the Vikings.
The Lions are the two seeds,so they would get seventh seed in
the first round of the playoffs.Definitely a possibility that Matthew Saffer could take
(20:03):
the Rams. There. Wouldn't thatbe funny? That would be full circle,
wun't it? Okay? I forgotto tell you that I introduced myself
to Dan Campbell for the first time. And how long has he been here?
Three years? How to go?Well, you know it's funny because
I'm leaving and I'm going to theelevator and I see Dan Campbell, his
wife, his family, and Igot to say, good looking family.
(20:26):
They should be in a gap adI gotta say. But I said,
I go, I'm sorry to botheryou, but I cover your team.
We've never met. I'm ron toMoss with iHeart sports. Oh, he
goes, oh yeah, and heshook my hand, very nice, very
cordial. His wife was. Ididn't really talk to anyone because I didn't
want to keep them. But theywere lovely. They laughed at me because
(20:48):
I'm like, we've never actually met, but I cover your team, you
know what I mean? And theywere very nice, very lovely family,
I have to say, and Iappreciate that. Dan Campbell just reminds me
of like when I covered HERM Edwardsand Dick for Meal. No bullshit,
you know, just good good peoplelike I don't I don't know how to
(21:11):
explain it, because he's a humanbeing. You know, he doesn't he's
gonna shake your hand. He's goinglike he did at the press conference a
couple of weeks ago when he wantedto Somebody asked a question and he was
like, I'm sorry, what's yourname? You know what I mean?
Yeah, And he would remember hername too from a reporter, you know
what I mean. Like, andhe's not he's not an asshole like some
(21:36):
coaches that were here in the past. I hear it all the time,
just because you don't want to saytheir names. I hear it all the
time from my colleagues around the NFLright now where they you know, they're
like, man, I'm happy foryou because you know, you get to
deal with a coach that that sortof gets it, you know, and
and you know, it's maybe alittle bit of a you know, how
the sausage is made type deal. But I think there are a lot of
(22:00):
a lot of paranoid coaches out there, a lot of coaches that you know,
they they worry about the wrong thingsall the time. And dan Is
is a very pleasant, you know, person to deal with. And you
know that doesn't mean he doesn't getangry about things, but you're right,
he's he would remember your name nexttime you saw him. And just like
you know, the reporter that heasked for ESPN last week, I'm sure
you know that was a genuine thing, like, hey, what's your name
(22:22):
is, just so he can rememberit. I mean, this is he
is a real life person, andyou know, he just acts how he
is, right like there is nopretense about him. And you're right,
we haven't always seen that with othercoaches before him. But look, it's
not just like the Lions aren't uniquein that they've had coaches like that in
the past. I think there area lot of people in the NFL,
(22:45):
or probably in positions of power aroundyou know, the country around the world
that are like that, Right, something gets to their head and Dan is
as every man as it gets, and that is a large part of his
appeal. Well, right, andyou have to appreciate that. Okay.
So also, yesterday the Packers wonand they're coming into ford Field Thanksgiving Day
(23:07):
game. But you have to work. I'm sorry, I do not what
could you say about the Packers.Jordan did throw a pick yesterday they beat
the Chargers. I mean that's theteam that the Lions, you know,
took to the lawyer, or theChargers took the Lions to the lawyer,
I guess. And it was maybenot as high scoring, but it was
(23:27):
a similar game and that the Packersneeded a late touchdown to win, and
Jordan Love delivered. And look,I don't think the Packers are a very
good team. You know, certainlytheir record doesn't reflect it. But you
know they they did get a win, and I know that was at lambeau
Field, and maybe you're right.Look, Jordan Love doesn't throw an interception
(23:47):
and that's been a bugaboo for himall season. They did lose Aaron Jones
to an injury, so we'll seewhat that rushing game is like when when
they come to town. But youknow, from the Lions standpoint, Thursday's
game is another game that they shouldwin, absolutely, and it's the hottest
ticket in town. Did you knowthat? I just saw that standing room
only tickets are going for like twohundred bucks or more. I saw that.
(24:11):
It more than anything. It makesme wish I would have bought some
season tickets just so I could sellthem on the side and the like on
the resale sites. You know, over a thousand, thousands of dollars for
decent seats and crazy. When haveyou ever heard? That? Was the
beast time you ever heard that?I mean those Super Bowl tickets in February
when the Lions are playing the Chiefsin a rematch, Those things are going
(24:33):
to be nuts. No, Idon't look the car before the horse,
my friend. Right season, Ihaven't had a Thanksgiving at home since two
thousand and six, and which coincidentallywas Taylor Swiss first national anthem performance that
Thanksgiving games, So I missed that, I guess, right, But I've
often wondered, like, man,I don't know how people do this all
(24:56):
the time, right, they spendtheir holidays away from the family just to
go watch football. Like if Iwasn't doing it for a living, I
don't know that I could do that. I don't know about you. Would
you if you weren't you're obviously noteven going for your job. So but
this year, but I don't know, would you. I that I have
the day off, which I donot, and I usually do cover Thanksgiving
(25:19):
Day games, but if I don'thave to, I'm not I'll be on
my couch watching the game taking notes. Yeah, no, I'll be you
know, I'll give the hard stuffup to you my Thanksgiving. Like I
said, I haven't had a Thanksgivingat home since two thousand and six.
I covered the Lions for the OaklandPress back in two thousand and seven,
eight, two thousand and nine,I was I was covering Michigan and we,
(25:45):
you know, we somehow we gottickets because some friends had tickets and
they took us, So I guesswe did go that year. But yeah,
I you know, I don't knowwhat a Thanksgiving is like anymore without
being at Ford Field. Thanksgiving iswhen I became a Cowboys Doers fan,
because they were always on Thanksgiving.Look, I remember it when I was
young too, right, this isthat was the day. That's what you
(26:07):
did. You sat in front ofthe TV and ate turkey at halftime.
You know, it's sort of likea late lunch more than a dinner.
And you know you watch the Lionsand then the Cowboys after them, and
certainly there's three games now, andyou know it's it's as much as football
has evolved, the game, thesport, the league, you know,
this is still something that you knowa lot of people hold near and dear,
(26:29):
