last from standing? This is whatthe greatest thing about sports is if you
play to win the game. That'swhy we took the damn field. So
if you want to crown them, they crown their ass. But they are
who we thought they were and wetalked about the look. Welcome to the

again on Monday. Not again againthey lost to Baltimore. Okay, but
(01:33):
it's not again, it's they backto being winners. That stench is now
relieved from that. How quickly weforget one loss is a stench after years?
Well that was that was a stench. That was a bad. Okay
game, So they uh, MondayNight Football their first win on Monday night
at home? I thought it wassince twenty fourteen, right, Yeah,
(01:56):
twenty eighteen was the last time theyplayed a right, but their first win
home win on Monday Night football wastwenty fourteen. And look, if we're
being honest, the readers are nota very good TA got offul faired their
coach this week, so Josh McDaniels, because you know, football is mysterious.
Jimmy Garoppolo was terrible. But youknow, give the Lions credit.
They came back performance they needed, right and obviously a breakout game for Jamiir
(02:21):
Gibbs. I mean he was spectacularand Ronda I was surprised. I mean
the the workload that he had toI think he had thirty one touches.
I remember talking to him in thelocker room a couple of weeks ago after
David Montgomery had those thirty two carries, and you know, Montgomery was the
first game he was going to miss. I said, Jae, I said,
what see you know, like, are you ready for this big of
(02:42):
a workload? We haven't really seenit. And he said, yes,
is what I'm sort of built for. And I said, thirty two carries
like David And he said, man, that's crazy, Like I don't know
how anyone can do thirty two carries. And then he goes out and gets
thirty one touches. So, youknow, credit to him for you know,
carrying the ball that many times, for the Lions believing in him.
I guess to do that seeing thathe had that in him, because I
think a lot of people thought hewas just going to be a perimeter rushing
(03:04):
thread. And he showed some powerbetween the tackles too, right the way
he broke that one for the touchdownyep, and that's how you leap.
Jared Goff, that's how you leap. Well, he needed a little bit
of help getting into the stands. He got up there halfy most of the
way and they were pulling him up. But again that's how you. Colby
Soresdell, the rookie offensive lineman, someone had asked him after the game about,
(03:29):
you know, whether he thought aboutgoing to celebrate with him, and
he said he did until he jumpedin the stands and he said, when
John you know, came back tothe sideline, he asked him about it
and GiB said, you know,I got a Fortian's vertical. So that
a little bit difference there in theathleticism exactly. Also, Jared Goffe threw
for two hundred and seventy two yards, a touchdown and a pick six.
(03:49):
Okay, but if you're gonna theyhad three turnovers, okay, a couple
fumbles in that pick six. Theissue, if you're going to be picky,
right, it's had They had issuesin the red zone because they had
to set off of field goals andthat that can't happen against a good team.
Against good teams, I think theturnovers and the red zone issues you
(04:11):
know, and Dan said that sortof alluded to that after the game that
you know, good teams, welleven good teams, they don't win games
like that too often. So youknow, it's a credit to the Lion's
defense that the Raiders couldn't do much. But also you know, they throw
the pick, Jared Goff throws theinterception return for a touchdownt lines come right
back out and go right back downthe field. So I think we have
seen some resilience out of this teamthat maybe wasn't there, you know,
(04:34):
in previous seasons. And I doI give you know, I think a
lot of it was built from thetrials and tribulations that they sort of have
have gone through the past couple ofseasons under Dan Campbell. It's a lot
of the same guys, a lotof the same leaders, at least some
of these young guys that you know, it's cliche, we say it all
the time, but they maybe theylearned how to win and that's helping them
in situations like that when they popup in games. Right, and Kirby
(04:57):
Joseph also had a pick, Andwhat was interesting did you notice what they
did after the pick six? Imean after the interception. You know,
I didn't notice it at first.What I'm working, I don't, you
know, I pay attention because Ithink they were listening to the same old
podcast. Because once he had theinterception, the whole defense went into the
(05:21):
end zone and did the thriller dance. Right Well, they did something,
and you enjoyed it. I likedit. I thought it was funny,
it was creative. I can appreciateit as well. Honestly, I didn't
realize what they did until Zack textedus about it, and I just wasn't
paying attention at that point. Iguess I was taking notes after he you
(05:42):
know, he intercepted, it gottackled, and I didn't even realize it
was the thriller dance until later on. Of course you didn't. I'm an
idiot. I don't know what canI say? Jesus, you know you
guys, we're a I have toI want to set the scene right now
because we are in a different studio. It's like a road game for me.
I don't know how comfortable ass andyou and cars sitting next to each
other. We are so close tolike you're on a date, and I'm
(06:03):
curious, who would pick up thetab. I would we would try to
dine and dash. I think Ithink I think Zach would pick up the
tab because Dave, I think youhave alligator arms, Jamison Will, I
think you have. You know you'renot grabbing for anything. You're listening to
(06:24):
the same old podcast. I'm Ronde Moss with iHeart Sports and not work,
along with Dabraquette from the Detroit FreePress and Zach obviously sponsored by Victory
Lane Quick Oil Change. This wasa nice win. They're six and two
head into the Bytes are best startssince twenty fourteen. They have the second
best record in the NFC, whichone, I mean, I can't remember
(06:45):
the last time they had the secondbest record in the NFC. It's been
a while. The second best recordin the NFL. They're tied for the
second best record, right There areseveral teams that have six that are six
and two, but Eagles seven andone. In the Eagles have murderers Row
coming up on their schedule. Yeah, Dallas twice in the next six weeks
or so. I think the Chiefsare in there. The Seahawks like,
(07:05):
there's a lot of potential for losses. So and look the Lions aren't going
to win out from here, right, They're not going nine to oh the
rest of the way, But there'san opportunity for them to do something really
special, maybe be the number oneseed, just given what they have on
the schedule, where they're at rightnow, going into a bye week right
here, to get healthy and yeah, second best record in the NFC.
(07:26):
I think we all thought in thisroom at least, and most people around
the league thought they were going tobe a good team this year. But
I don't know that anyone thought theywould be the second best team in the
NFC right now, right And youknow, Jared Goff kind of alluded to
that after the game. Yeah itfeels great. Yeah, we're we're six
and two were Leonard Division, playinggood ball and still feel like there's meat
on the bone. Say there yougo, meet on the bone. That's
(07:48):
our date. They're still meat onthe bone right here that we can stakes
that we're getting no. Look,I mean he's right though, because they've
had some you know, there areyou look at the last game in particular
right there, the turnovers. Idon't think what you said and what he
said mean the same thing, Butwe get that you got dirty mind there
(08:13):
round. No, that's not whatI'm talking about. I'm talking about the
steaks where you said who's out toeat? Who's picking up the tab?
Anyway, I am so immature. But yeah, so what Jared gob said
on the bone, Yeah, no, there is, there is in the
(08:35):
cleanest sense of the phrase. Therethere is. There's still meat on the
bone because they you know, youlook at the mistakes they had this last
game. It was not the cleanestgame. You mention the red zone.
If they were playing a much betterteam, they would have lost this game,
I believe because three turnovers you getin the red zone. They were
one for five. You're kicking fieldgoals. You missed a field goal.
(08:58):
You just can't win that way.Two passes too that I mean Jimmy Garoppolo
just missed a wide open receiver fora touchdown. Again. Adams was open
a third time, but Aiden Hutchinsongot some pressure on him forced that the
incompletion. So there are some thereare There are a lot of areas that
if they look at that tape theycan clean up. Yeah. Absolutely,
And they sacked Garoppolo six. Thedefense really stepped up. I thought they
(09:24):
obviously had a much better game thanagainst the Ravens. They sacked Garoppolo six
times up a pit right, apick. So the thriller dance and the
thriller dance. But moving forward tothe trade deadline, well one second before
(09:45):
we before we go to the tradedeadline, because I know that's a big
topic here. You know, Ilook, Garoppolo not a good quarterback right
now, right, Desmond Ritter notvery good, Jordan Low. I mean,
they've played a lot of quarterbacks thatare at the bottom of the NFL.
You know, I got to interruptyou because I have heard and these
are obviously you know that Lions thatlike not frauds. But because they haven't
(10:07):
played, so what does this mean? Are they really that good or you
know what I mean? Well, that's what I wanted to dive into a
little bit because I mean, youknow, the schedule is what the schedule
is, right, It's not likethe Lions can pick who they play.
And you know, Patrick Mahomes, they beat him, best quarterback in the
NFL. Granted he didn't have TravisKelcey all those drops. You know,
(10:28):
Mahomes I thought had a really goodgame that game, extending plays. Next
best quarterback They've played Lamar Jackson, they got drilled. Next best quarterback they
played Gino Smith. They lost thatgame, you know, wasn't fantastic,
but you know that's that's the nextbest quarterback they played. So you look
at the Tampa game, there weresome opportunities off Baker Mayfield. Was any
good that, you know, Tampawould have played the game points, Yeah,
same thing last week with with Garoppoloand the Raiders. So I do
(10:52):
think there are things to clean up, and I do think now the Lions
are fortunate they don't play you know, any other justin her coming after the
bye, Dak Prescott into the season. That's it. Those are the only
like top half of the NFL quarterbackson their schedule until they get to the
playoffs, and even then on theNFC side, like Jalen Hurts, that's
about the extent of it. BrockPurdy, you know, the shines him
(11:16):
a little bit, yeah, recently. So I think the Lions are in
a really good spot and that doesn'tdetract from them being six and two,
but it is the reality that theyhaven't played any great quarterbacks in the NFL
or many in the ones that theyhave played have have done a really good
job against their defense. So Ithink those are and this leads into the
(11:37):
trade deadline a little bit. Thoseare some issues maybe that they didn't address
this week in the secondary where theymight need some help there down the road,
right, And we'll get to thetrade in a second. But first,
the one team that I thought theywould definitely that would maybe be a
loss would be the Vikings because theywere playing so well. And then Kirk
Cousins went down with the torn Achilles. They traded for Joshua Dobbs from the
(12:01):
Cardinals, who I didn't know asa rocket scientist. You know now that
you say that, I see heturned that nast. Yeah at Tennessee.
He's really smart and he has oneof those like photographic memories. I was
hearing about reading about. He's reallysmart, so he could probably pick up
their playbook pretty fast. But withthat said, he wasn't that great in
(12:24):
Arizona right now, I mean, you know, he kept look, Arizona
is a bad team, and hesort of kept that team afloat, you
know, one a game or twoand you know, so, so credit
to him for doing that. Imean, for Minnesota, it was really
that seventh seed in the NFC iswide open. The top six spots are
spoken for. The Vikings are ingood shape at four and four. They've
(12:46):
got a pretty favorable schedule ahead ofthem, as we talked about last week
on the podcast. So Dobbs isthe kind of guy that can keep you
afloat, gets you to the postseason. But you know, to the the
point about the Lions, had KirkCousins been there, that's another at least
you know pretty good, That's whatI'm saying, Like that would have to
me if I would. The starsare aligning exactly. Well, yeah,
(13:09):
but you never know. I mean, you can't. I don't think the
Lions could take any team for grantedright now unless they improve on their red
zone and stop with the turnovers becausethe last few weeks they've had turnovers that
they haven't had in the beginning ofthe season. Yeah, look, you
know these even though the Jared Goffhe's just throwing interceptions left and right.
(13:31):
Jesus unjinks Kirby Joseph does that notcount. We talked to him last week
about having no interceptions and then hegoes out and gets his first of the
season. So yes, no,I can't unjink somebody he just happened to
be lucky and it was Jimmy Garoppolo. You could have caught that or picked
that up. That was a prettyawful threat. I mean it was terrible.
(13:52):
I'm like, who are you throwingit to? But you still like
him? Oh, he's so cute. Anyway, you're listening to the same
old podcast. I'm Ron de Mosswith iHeart Sports Network along with Dabriquette from
The Free Press, sponsored by VictoryLane Quick Oil Change. Okay, so
trade deadline, eh, I mean, that's that's what I gotta say.
(14:13):
The Lions traded for Donovan People's jones, People's jones from the Browns, and
people were expecting defensive help, defensive, another pass rusher, a corner.
I don't get why they felt theyneeded another average wide receiver. Well,
I think you summed it up,as you know. It was kind of
(14:35):
one of those those you know, someone on Twitter when I tweeted out the
you know, the news of thetrade or maybe my story, he responded
and said, this feels like oneof those gag gifts you get for Christmas.
Well, you hope that's not it, and it actually is it And
I thought that was a pretty prettygood comparison. I mean, look,
DPJ, right, Michigan fans knowhim. He had a really good season
(14:58):
last year, sixty one nine, three touchdowns. I go capable receiver.
You know he's gonna be the numberfour in Detroit. Just depth. I
mean, I think it's a goodaddition because Jamison Williams is not ready for
a big role. So you know, Josh Reynolds has had some injury problems.
So you get an outside receiver fornothing. It's no risk. It's
it's it's no risk. It's nota big move. It's a it's a
(15:22):
solid move that contenders make to bolsterthe roster. But I would have liked
to see them do more. Iwould have liked to see them add a
cornerback or a pass rusher. Ido think they're a little light defensively at
those positions, and adding someone offthe edge could help Aiden Hutchinson. Adding
someone in that secondary would would reallyhelp. Again, talking about the issues
(15:43):
that they've had, even though theyhaven't always those passes haven't always connected,
They've they've let some open receivers getbehind them in recent weeks. So a
little disappointed, but Ronda. Thetruth is, no one was really out
there. I mean, Brian Burnswasn't getting traded. Stan wasn't getting traded.
So the type of player the ChristianMcCaffrey of this year's trade deadline,
(16:04):
he wasn't there to be had.It freaks me out when you say Patrick
Sartan because I covered his dad andI know his dad really well in Kansas
City. It's I'm not that old. I look bad at yourself there.
Yeah, exactly. But people wereexpecting, they would hope defensive help depth
(16:26):
because Aiden Hutchinson needs help. Imean, he gets injured and forget it.
You could just forget. And Iget the angst over not doing anything
and the disappointment because especially when theother teams in the NFC make moves.
Forty nine Ers trade for Chase Youngat a reasonable price, their pick,
and I'm not sure what the Bearswere doing. I don't know. Well
we can get into that in asecond. But you know, the Eagles
(16:48):
edit U Sevin Byer defensive back help. The Haawks added Leonard Williams. So
every other contender, not the Cowboys, I guess, but every other contender
in the NFC, you know, made him move to strengthen their defense.
And the Lions where you saw twoareas where you said, man, they
could really use somebody their depth, whatever it is, and they didn't do
it. I think that's why peoplecome away feeling a little empty from the
(17:11):
trade deadline. Well here's what DanCampbell said about that, how the NFC
was loading up on defensive help.Good for them, summed it up,
good for them. I like it. But he really tried to explain what
the Lions did, what the Lionsdid, and why they didn't go after
a go all in yeah, yeah, and go all in exactly. And
(17:32):
this is what he had to sayabout that. I just have to go
back to this. It had everythinghad to be it's the right person,
it had to be the right pick, the right fit for us, and
then it's got to be the rightprice, the right price. So obviously
they weren't willing to give up ahigher draft pick like the Niners gave up
a third round pick for Chase Youngand so, and they I don't think
(17:53):
they wanted to mess with the room, do you know what I mean?
Like there don't. Well, justbecause they are like that, like very
high quality, good guys. Youknow, I don't know that the chemistry.
I don't think they wanted to messwith the chemistry on that side of
(18:14):
the ball. For some reason. They have a good thing going, So
I think there is some merit tonot wanting to mess that up or having
to bring the right person in.The best player traded at the deadline was
Montes Sweat. Okay, you cansee by just by the return that that
people gave up. He was theplayer that had the biggest market. Now,
look, I don't know that BrianBurns was ever going to get traded,
right. They turned down Carolina turneddown two ones in a two last
(18:37):
year reportedly for Brian Burns. Soif you're the Lions, you probably don't
want to pay that. As goodas Brian Burns is, Pat Sartan,
who we talked about probably not gettingtraded him. He's one of the best
cornerbacks in the NFL, I don'tknow why Denver would trade him. These
are sort of the pie in thesky names that were out there, right
to Neil Hunter, maybe that wasa guy that that might have been dealt.
But you know, I think fromthe Lions standpoint, you know,
(18:59):
you don't want to they don't wantto. You know, they're not about
to open their door and let anotherteam come ransack their house of future draft
picks because you know, they theyfeel like they have an extended window to
compete here. And you look atyou know, maybe I think maybe there's
a lesson in both what the Ramsdid they mortgage it? They won a
Super Bowl and what happened right, there's great, but what are they now?
(19:22):
Nothing? And San Francisco as goodas San Francisco is one of the
best teams in football. They tradedfour picks for Christian McCaffrey last year,
right, they traded a three forChase Young. They haven't had a top
sixty pick in the past two drafts. So maybe maybe part of the reason
why they've they've hit some hard timeshere the last couple of weeks is because
of depth. You know, theyhave some really good players. But Christian
(19:45):
McCaffrey's out, Deebo Samuel's out,Trent Williams is out. McCaffrey was back,
but he missed some time. Sowhen you lose some of those guys,
you don't have enough to replace them, enough capable players. Meanwhile,
the Lions really good overall roster.Maybe not quite as much top end talent
as the forty nine ers, butyou know, all twenty three of Bradholmes's
(20:07):
draft picks from the last three yearsare on this roster. So you know,
we always talk about replacement level playersand you can find guys that are
out there. But I do thinkthere's something to you know, having these
guys that have been around for along time, that are young, that
are still growing, and maybe thatare a little more talented than just the
guy you're going to pick up offthe street to be able to plug in.
So, you know, the Lionswere able to navigate their injury situation
(20:30):
in part because of the depth theyhave, and maybe that's why San Francisco
wasn't. So while I think theLions should have done more and I would
have liked to see them do more, I don't know. I don't think
it's a big deal at the endof the day because the players that moved,
you know, they're not the typethat are going to go and win
a Super Bowl. Chase Young's agood player. There was a report up
(20:51):
from Mike Silver that said, hey, you know, he was a big
freelancer and he kind of wore outas welcome in Washington. That probably wouldn't
fit with the Lions. They didn'twant to give up essentially a one a
first round pick for for a MonteseSweat. The Bears we wanted to be
a rent a player because he's afree agent. So who knows if you're
going to sign him to that bigextension that he's looking for. Well he
(21:12):
would, but if you're Chicago andyou're giving up that, you obviously intend
to sign him and or use thefranchise tag if you can't sign right So,
and the Bear's pick is going tobe in the thirties, I mean,
that's a high second round pick.So for the Lions to beat that
deal, you have to give upa first round pick to get Montes Sweat.
And so I don't know from theLions standpoint, given that they're going
(21:33):
to have to pay Aiden Hutchinson ina year year and a half, I
don't know that they were I don'tThey obviously weren't willing to do that.
In fact, you know I wrotethis, they weren't really even in on
Montes Sweat or Chase Young. Sothat just tells you you know that they
a they like their defensive line, their pass rush more I think than a
lot of people do and be theprice. Maybe that they were willing to
(21:55):
pay for help that they deemed supplementalhelp to what they already have on the
roster. Well, Dan Campbell didsay that that Brad Holmes was on the
phone with everybody, So I'm justcurious who everybody is and who was he
looking at or who would he anddo you know, like an example of
who he may have been interested inthat the teams, the teams weren't going
to trade didn't return my text beforehe went down and talked to us yesterday,
(22:19):
so he wasn't on the phone witheveryone, but obviously, right,
No, I mean it's this iswhat happens every obvious is it? Obviously
everyone he was on the phone witheveryone in the league, Like that's just
what happens at the trade deadline.Any defensive help, if you were on
the phone with everyone, Well,I don't see. I don't think that's
the case. I mean, theycould have got defensive help, but they
(22:40):
weren't coming into help, right, and they weren't willing to give up,
you know, a high draft pick. They weren't gonna you know, mortgage
that like the Eagles traded Centavious Streetto the Atlanta Falcons. Could the Lions
have got someone like that, sure, but they don't need someone like that.
What they need is a number onecornerback or you know, a number
(23:02):
two edge rusher to pair with AdenHutchinson. And for the price it was
going to cost to get in numbertwo Montes sweat, they weren't willing to
pay that for the And there wereno number ones of Brian Burns. There
were no you know, Pats orTan's available. So I think, you
know, given what was out there, what the Lions were willing to spend
where they were at. You know, again, I would have liked to
(23:25):
see them do more, But endof the day, it's kind of a
it is what. It is nota big deal that they didn't. Okay,
speaking of cornerbacks, you had avisitor. There was a visitor in
the Lions locker room last week. There was CJ oh CJ. Gardner Johnson,
Yes, yes, yes, cameback briefly. Didn't see him,
but he was back. Well. And when I said CJ, You're like,
(23:48):
who's that? Because he changed hisname he got by CD. Now
CD Deuce, I'm calling him Deucedeucy is it Deucey? It was Deuce,
but he goes by deucey. Sotimes yeah, why why? Why?
Like you were hurt and you hadsurgery on your torn pack? Right?
(24:10):
Is that correct? Correct? Back? And he's for check in yep,
check And all of a sudden, now he's back with the name change.
So why he had surgery and thenwhile he was under decided, you
know, I think I'm gonna comeout with CD Deuce. So he's gone
by CD Deuce. So it's funny. I mean I did a big story
on CJ. Gardner Johnson before theseason. We got into a lot of
(24:33):
topics. I mean, we spendget into this I did. Actually it's
a story I'm going to tell youis he is gone by the nickname CD
Deuce for years? Why? Andhe said, part of it? You
know, this is sort of thename that he uses when he wraps.
He has his own you know record. You know, I don't know rap
name. No, no, hesaid, so his explanation to me.
(24:56):
I asked him about the nickname, and he said, you know, I
sort of have like an alter ego, Like on the field, I'm one
person and off the field, I'manother and it just sort of transforms like
off the field. There's a medicationfor that. I mean, he's gone.
People call him in the locker room. They've always called him CD Deuce.
That's just really because that's his rapname. It wasn't something that that
(25:17):
just came out of nowhere, Liketalking to Aaron Glenn about CJ. Gardner
Johnson the beginning of the season.I believe he called him Doucy or he
called him CD or whatever. That'show he's been known. So this is
not like a random out of theblue. No one knows him by his
name. His handle on Twitter oron Instagram was always CD or something to
that, so we should refer tohim as CD or Deuce. I would
(25:40):
say Deucey would probably be what youwould call him if you were going to
call him by his new name.I don't know that I can filed.
I can't do it. I don'tknow that the paperwork I had his music.
I'd like to hear him rap.Is that any good? You know?
Is it PG or is it foreveryone? He told me he wraps
about real life stuff, real lifestuff. Yeah, you know, I
(26:02):
mean, I'm sure some of itis not fit for, you know,
the general radio play. But nowthis is something. So the other thing
he told me about this, likehe one of his let's call it an
uncle, you know. He said, it's someone who essentially he he considers
an uncle. A friend that he'shad for a long long time is a
promoter, producer. I forget theexact background, you know, a pretty
(26:26):
prominent one in the music industry. One of CJ's best friends was killed earlier
this year, was in the musicindustry. And he told me, he
said, he's not giving up hisrap career until he makes a million dollars
in it, you know, asa tribute to this guy, take that
form. So these are just someimportant things in his life, the music,
(26:48):
you know, I guess just youknow, he's he's much deeper than
football, even though I don't thinkpeople realize that about him. So the
CD Deuce nickname is something that he'shad for a long long time. It's
something that a lot of people dorecognize him as. And whether it goes
through officially Chad O Cho Sinko right, Chad Johnson, remains to be seen.
But yeah, you know, didn'texpect this to happen. But I
(27:11):
certainly get why he's doing. Okay, I take back my cynical behavior on
his name change, because it's reallynot a name change. It's his pseudonym,
right once you call it that likea it's his stage name. It's
a stage name, Marshall Mathers rightexactly, yes, exactly, and he
just wants to go by that name, right, Okay, all right.
(27:33):
I'm not mad at that because whenI heard it, I'm like, oh
God, not another one, youknow, how they you know, there's
certain athletes, there's at some athletesthat you know, I find it funny
that athletes want to be entertainers andentertainers want to be athletes, you know,
I find don't you think change myname to a symbol? Like if
you would have like, if youwould change your name, what would you
(27:56):
change it to? I mean, this goes back to what was our first
or second? Yeah, podcast right, buckets right, that's a nickname.
That's not like if you were, like, you know, I really want
to change my name, would youchange your name? I wouldn't change my
name. I was I never thoughtabout changing my name. No, no,
I have, I never have either. I mean, you know,
(28:18):
thank my parents for the name thatwas to me, I guess it's never
crossing. But I'm also making moneyrapping or doing something different and don't have
an alter ego that you know wherelike on the football field, I have
to be violent and like destroy people, and then off the field I'm supposed
to be you know, Colmas canbe. You know. CJ told me
another story that I'll share here.He said, you know, he used
(28:40):
to be a running back, quarterback. I think it was running back,
you know, playing little league allgrown up, and you know he was
at one point he grew too bigand in Florida they put you know what
stripe on your helmet. I thinkwhen you're you're you know, too big
to carry the ball. So hewas a green striper, black striper,
whatever it was. And you know, he was kind of bummed about that.
Like he was running the you know, he was in the bleachers,
like you know, basically in hisunderwear, like trying to lose weight,
(29:03):
you know what I mean, Andso he couldn't and he was too heavy.
And he said the first game kidswere teasing him, like calling him
fat ass, you know whatever likethat means. So he said, he
just knocked the shit out of someonelike just buried them and just stay over
them and talk try and that waslike his love for like, Okay,
I like this, I get tohit people and like so again these little
things that like you know, peopleare trying to tell his story and you
(29:26):
kind of understand where he's coming from. So that's the that's the whole you
know, the switch that has toflip on the football field, right,
Like he just wants to destroy peopleand it takes a different breed I think
to be a defensive player in theNFL. Yeah, because you really have
to enjoy the contact and want tolay someone out and he does. And
(29:47):
so you know that's the right He'sseed deuce on the field and off it
he can be CJ, quiet guy, dad, whatever he wants to be.
You're listening to the same old podcast. I'm Ron de Moss with iHeart
Sports Network along with day Get fromthe Detroit Free Press. Okay, so
the Lion's heading into their by theyget a break, which Dan Campbell says
is coming at a great time, right, And he also said he's gonna
(30:11):
look at tape and then take sometime off and then come back right over
the weekend. That's what he said, yep, what are you doing.
Well, I've been on break sincewhenever started lying. I like when I
when I was a true beat reporterlike you every day, like in the
(30:32):
Grind. I couldn't wait for thebye week. And I remember that I
left a couple days early to comehome. And I remember I got a
text from Josh, my coworker whowas on with us when they played the
Chiefs, and he had to gocover the Chiefs because I left, and
herm was like Ronda on vacation already, you know, And it was so
(30:55):
funny because you know, they noticedwhen you're not there, because if you're
there every day. And so Iloved it when that bye came, because
it is a grind and play.Do you think players will go on vacation
like skip town, go home.Oh they get out of there. Yeah,
they flew out like Tuesday morning.Yeah out yeah easy. All right.
So since you mentioned your bye weektravels, I guess I should share
(31:18):
this story too, and they'll work. I want to make sure that we'll
just tell your boring story and getit over with, all right, So
I do you know if I canI travel sometimes on the bye you know,
we went to you travel all thetime. I can't believe you'd want
to get on a plane. Well, sometimes it's good to get away,
right. We went to the VirginIslands a couple of years ago, just
had to get away. You know. It's whatever, wintertime essentially, right
or the start of it. Thekids want to break a couple of years
(31:40):
ago. This was ten years agonow, or so eight years ago the
Lions twenty fifteen. They played inLondon. Bye week was after I decided
to stay. We went to Mywife came with me. My daughter just
born, so he stayed home withthe grandparents. But we went to Ireland
for a few days afterwards. Didyou have fun? It was a good
(32:01):
time, you know. The monday, you know, after the game,
we had a crazy you know,so much fog. We couldn't get to
almost couldn't get to Ireland. Eventuallymade it. Had to fly into the
other side of the country, driveall the way across Ireland. Wow.
But the point of the story isend of the trip. I'm coming back
on a Thursday, you know, flying overseas, you Hey, whatever,
(32:22):
I don't think I had internet,or I don't even think you can get
internet when you're flying over international watersat that time, at least we landed
New York. Turn on my phoneseventy two miss messages. Lions had just
fired Martin Mayhew and Tom Lwan.Oh my god, bye week. I
decided to take some time right. They were coming off a playoff trip the
year before twenty fourteen. Oh mygod. I didn't think anything like that
(32:44):
would happen. Obviously, they startedthe season bad. I don't remember that.
Why do it seems so long ago? I mean, the you know,
all these miss messages long ago,it's eight years ago. Legitimately,
we got off the plane, satin Laguardi Airport. I was like,
Yo, I'm sorry, let's geta pizza you guys eat. I got
some work to do. Was onthe phone making phone calls about what was
(33:04):
going on with the trades. SoI'm I'm as much as I like to
travel on the bye week, now, I'm also sort of leery of it
because are you going anywhere this week? Not going anywhere this week? You
know, it's a little different now. Daughters in high school, so they're
not on break the same time. You ever heard of to miss some stuff,
and you know, we've definitely havesome kids stuff going on, and
so no, no big plans thisweek. I forgot to tell you.
(33:28):
I'll make it quick. So Iwas covering Pistons Saturday night. It was
her home opener, and Jamison Williamswas there and Brad Holmes, and I'm
going into the media room where theyhave Monty Williams postgame presser, and I
walk across the court and then I'mwalking through the seats, not the seats,
(33:50):
but there's a I don't know,a hall or whatever, and Jamison
Williams is standing there signing all theT shirts from the fan. I mean,
I thought that was really good.He stop and signed everything, and
of course he dropped one and Ihad to pick it up and give it
back to him, and I saidhello, and he said hello, gave
me one of those you know hugs, you know that side hug, bro
(34:10):
hug bro hug. He was. He's really I feel bad because he's really
a nice kid, do you knowwhat I mean? Like, I don't
think he's so horrible even though he'san NFL player makes millions. I think,
deep down he's a good kid.I just wish he would learn to
hold onto the ball so I wouldn'thave to you know, make fun.
(34:34):
Like he dropped a T shirt.I had to pick it up. I'm
like, he can't even hold onto a T shirt. No. Look,
that's why the Lions took the chanceon him, right, because he's
he's because he's fast. That's it. He's fast, right, that's like
he's the speedy guy. He isfast. He's super talented. But I
guess to your point, right,Rhonda is like he likes football enough,
(34:54):
he's not going to be a distractionin that way. Like they had no
interest in Jalen Carter because of allthe off field stuff. Right with Jamo
like whatever, you know, immaturitymight have come with it. It was
like, we can live with thisbecause people like him because he's a good
and you know, he's a guythat likes football. We don't we can
count on him on that part ofit. So when you say, yeah,
(35:14):
you feel bad you like him. He's a nice enough guy. I
think that's the that's why the Lionsand he's him. Yeah right, and
he'll sign everything. I mean heliterally didn't have to. I mean he
stood there and people were throwing tea, you know, piston tea, and
he was signing everything. Most peopledon't do that. Most athletes don't take
the time to do that for sure, and so and I also appreciate that
(35:36):
he goes to other sporting events andand and supports the other teams in the
city, which most people don't don'thave time, busy whatever. But I
do hope that I hope he's notgoing to Vegas, and I do hope
he's working the jugs machine because heneeds to practice. Look, he's a
(35:58):
very, very talented player. Youcan see the speed he just gets behind
people and weighs it. Most otherNFL receivers can't, you know, the
hands, the ball tracking. There'ssome things that haven't been there for him
early on, or the disconnect heneeds that needs to come together. Obviously,
he's not ready to be a bigtime contributor for a team that like
the Lions that are going to youknow that are going to go on a
(36:20):
playoff run here, but they needthat speed, they need that element,
so they need to bring him along. You know, we're a year and
a half into his his NFL career. You know, certainly, I don't
think it's gone the way anyone wouldhave hoped to this point. No one's
ready to give up on him yet, but the bottom line is he needs
to be better on the field tokeep getting opportunities in Detroit. All right,
(36:43):
Dave, Well, thanks, Ihope you have a good bye week.
I'll take some time and you know, hang with the kids at least
get to get to get away fromit for a little bit. We'll miss
you and Zach as well. Butyou're listening to the same old podcast.
