(00:01):
Welcome in once again, Dan Joyceand Scott Low talking Valley District high school
football in the sh into a ValleyDistrict high school football podcast. What's up,
Scott? I thought i'd go throughmost of your intro without interrupting.
Sweet appreciate that historically that hasn't beenone of my strong series. You're just
so excited to talk. I amsame thing on Friday nights when we go

(00:23):
to our high school football games. And last Friday night we checked out a
Spotswood against overmatched Charlotte's field team.Yes, but all the weapons that Spotswood
has, and then we'll talk aboutsome of the weapons that Turner Ashby has.
Right. You know, eventually thosetwo teams are going to have to
clash in Valley districts. Charlotte's PhilipSpotswood with a thirty eight to six Spotswood

(00:46):
victory. Parker Constable. We werethere to see him get two touchdowns and
eighty yards. Matt Craig got itdone with one of the touchdowns on what
they credited was a four yard reception. And Elijah Ordagosa you can say that
better than I can. Well,he had a heck of a game.
Yeah, And Nick Sicana also scoredas well as kicker yefet Klom Kaflom.

(01:11):
You're right to mention Sicata and Ordagosa. These guys are getting it done defensively,
and that's one of the things.Look at all these offensive weapons.
We just did a thirty eight tosix score scoring Rundown without really talking about
Ellie Brown. You know they're finejunior quarterback. But Spotswood defensively is what

(01:33):
impresses me. I mean, theirteam that held Spotswood off the board almost
got that shout out. And thatdefense is going to have to be the
match for Turner Ashby later in theseason. Yeah, oh, most definitely,
But I mean offensively, still veryvery impressive. Rayin Dean, who
you didn't mention what just terrorized Charlottesville'squarterback all night on Friday. And the

(01:56):
Charlottesville quarterback clearly an incredible athlete, but has nothing else to work with,
right, he was having to doit all with a page County we saw
many years ago they had one reallygreat Yeah, just about single handedly kept
them in games. Yeah, butI mean it was it was too bad
and then it was just it wasunfortunate. The chippiness of that game.

(02:20):
That just I don't know if thereferees needed to do a better job reeling
that in early because by the endof the game, I mean, it
took forever to get that game overwith. And know not that I'm complaining
about being at a football game ona Friday night, but they had to
keep stopping for penalties and on sportsmanliCon. I mean, the bench got
it on sportsmanlike I mean, amI right? Because on the broadcast you

(02:43):
and I talked about it. Wehad to move on and go to the
next play. Yeah, but yeah, I've been doing this for more than
thirty years. You've been doing itfor about that. Have you ever seen
a coach getting on sportsman mine conduct? You've never seen that. I've seen
bench warnings, yeah, but I'venever the flag thrown and to the referees
credit through it at the throw itat the coach, kind of the way

(03:05):
Bill Belichick pulled the red flag outon Sunday night against the Dolphins where he
break down in front of the referee. So that Yeah, so when the
ref did that, he was like, now that's you. And I was
very surprised, Like you said,I've never seen that before. Charlotte's Phil
just doesn't have what it takes tostand with Spotswood anyway this year thirty eight

(03:29):
to six to win there. SoI don't know if anybody has what it
takes to stay with Turner Ashby.Waynesboro got up on him six to nothing
early in the game, and thenTurner Ashby said that'll be enough, thank
you very much. That'll do Waynesboro. Boll Baylor, who is another one
of those guys that if he's playingon Saturdays, might be playing defensively.

(03:50):
But what a great runner on hundredand eighty three yards in one two three,
four touchdowns. Wow. Three isa runner, one is a pass
receiver at four three yards, fiftyeight yards, twenty three yards as a
runner, and a fifty yard touchdownreception from quarterback Micah Shank who he's having
a pretty good year, buddy,Yeah, a little bit, a little

(04:12):
bit. He's well over a thousandall purpose yards right at this point.
He went into Friday Night's game withlike nine hundred and ninety eight all purpose
yards and that's three games into theseason. He accounts for three touchdowns,
so he throws one to Micah Shank. He throws to one we were talking
about to Bob Baylor. Oh,I'm sorry, Mike. He throws one
to MIKEA and Matthews. I alwaysgive my micas confused. It's a lot

(04:35):
of micas for one team. Alsoto see for so many offensive weapons that
they've got children fifty three yards, three touchdowns, Mike and Matthews over one
hundred yards receiving and a TD andTurner Ashby just continues to roll the new
number one in the shen Valley seven. Yeah, and we haven't had a
central was the first one to thethrone Riverheads with the number one Riverheads since

(04:58):
we've been voting in the Shen Valleyseven and has always been number one pretty
much. It's nuts. It's nuts. But I'll tell you what also with
Turner Ashby that I'm so impressed withis their line play. Yeah. Those
guys, they're big, they're strong, and they just move people out of
the way. It makes it alot easier for guys like Mike a Shank
to rack up the yards he doesthrowing or running. They open up huge

(05:20):
holes for Bo Baylor, and theygive Michael Matthews time to get free from
a defender because Mike al Shank canjust sit there in the pocket, be
like whenever you're ready. It's reallyimpressive. They're a very physical team.
We've talked about that. He heardfrom the team, He heard from the
coaches. They're giving everybody up frontall the credit. Yeah, credit where

(05:40):
credit is due for Turner Ashby. No question, they're going to be our
once again number one in the ShanValley seven. We vote, but quite
a few people switched from Central toTurner Ashby to put them on top this
time around. Central. By theway, no problems with Amelia Accounty thirty
seven and not so that's the numbertwo in sh Valleys. Have probably so

(06:01):
sure East Rock will remain in theShenn Valley seven. I predict because their
game with Buffalo Gap Eagles had tocome from behind. They won twenty eight
to fourteen. Bentley Hensley will getto see him on Friday night. A
couple of rushing tds in the fourthquarter thirty eight yards rushing, ninety eight
yards passing and two tds for JacariEves who's ascended to the starting quarterback position

(06:26):
there and he threw one to DamienDurrett and the other one to an athlete.
We noted last year's Davie Brown.Yeah. No, I'm looking forward
to getting a look at them. The hard part is trying to get to
see all of the schools that wecover. Yeah, you know, we
can't see them all in the firstfour weeks of the season. So East
Rock is number five and I'm definitelylooking forward to seeing what they do.

(06:47):
Now they're gonna be playing Harrisonburg, who have not had a lot of luck
this season. No offense, sameas last year. Harrisonburg at Orange County
last Friday night they lost thirty eightto nothing. Meets harrison We're going three
and it means they haven't scored allseason long, which it's just got to
be so incredibly frustrating for the kids. Not the hell, it's it's not

(07:10):
your daddy's Harrisonburg. It was anote in the paper from one of the
East Rock coaches talking about back inthe days of Dale Spitzer, when when
he was the coach and now Daleis just the daddy on the side on
the assistant coach for his son.But he says, you know, back
in the day, it was alwayssee if you had to win the championship,

(07:33):
you had to go through Harrisonburg. So they're going in there with that
mentality like Harrisonburg is a tough teamto beat then, and I want to
be proven wrong perhaps, but Idon't see Strong having many problems with harrison
on Friday Night. It's hard tosay, though, because I mean,
I know that Harrisonburg does play ahost of different teams than the rest of

(07:53):
the Valley District, and so sometimesI wonder, I mean, these teams
they're playing just so good yeah thatyou know, maybe when they're playing other
Valley District teams it's going to bea little more level. I mean,
I think Friday nights is gonna bea great way to find that out.
Yep. Moving on, we hadfour defiance with their quarterback Tray Miller.

(08:15):
Thank you. So I'm looking atmy head questioning myself there for a second.
Well, I just I just brokedown Tray you know, Okay,
Oh yeah, that's all you needfrom four quarterback? You know that guy,
It does the stuff. A coupleof TVs. He also ran for
one, so he accounts for threeof four defiances for touchdowns. They scored

(08:37):
two times in the fourth quarter inbeat Broadway twenty eight to fourteen. So
Broadway dips their toes in the watersof the shen Valley seven and they'll be
replaced by somebody I would imagine comingup this week. Yeah, I'm thinking
about my shen Valley seven. Ihad Wilson in that seventh spot. Sure,
well they had nothing to get kickedout. Yeah they didn't. But
then Stanton yep, busted out theup and stick against James River. Was

(09:01):
that forty nine nothing? Yep?That I wondering maybe I want to put
Stanton on there. I think Ithink the teams that are contending. You're
right about Stanton, You're right aboutWilson getting in there as a possibility,
and Strasburg maybe making a case toget back in there. They beat more
Field forty five to ten, Sowe'll see. There are so many blowouts

(09:24):
this season, and Stewart's Draft isa team that's making a case too.
Three TVs in their game as theybeat Larray for Baylor Graver remember that name
Hunt forty six yards he's ninth graderwhat, yep? Thirty four to seven
to win. For Stewart's Draft,They've always got to find somebody that's a
great runner, and they found one. It looks like they'll get him for

(09:46):
four years. Oh my gosh,he's a freshman. He ran for that
unbelievable the Rays at one and three, two and two for the draft.
So I think draft for Wilson andwho else did I say contending for that
other spot Stanton? Yeah, thoseare the three that are contending for the
number eight spot, and I thinkwhoever it is may not be there for

(10:07):
that long. They're gonna have toprove themselves in the shen Valley seven.
And you mentioned Wilson. They beatWestern Albamorrow twenty two to seven. See
their past. Running back Brandon Tyreehas been out. Yeah, I think
in a broken collar bone. AndRyan Monday, thank you. I didn't
know about that. So Ryan Mondayas the guy that had two TVs.
They're a little bit down with thatinjury, but perhaps Tyree can come back

(10:31):
later on this season. Yeah,Wilson's got like three or four significant players
out with injuries right now. AndI'm friends with the Principle of Prayer and
she would just say, it's justreally rough because we just got to wait
for these kids to get healthy enoughto get back on the field. I
respect the your last week putting themin at number seven, even though they
only had one win at that point. But Wilson the team, they were

(10:56):
in all those games, Yeah, and they were playing really tough opponents,
right, So I mean to me, it was kind of like, I
can't not because I think I thinkthey've got they've got something good going there.
They really do, and they youknow, for so long there were
that other Wayne's Boro team and nowthey're right, Yeah, the team and
unfortunately the Little Giants just not havinga lot of luck this year. No,

(11:20):
not after that first touchdown that theyscored against Turner Ashby. We'll see
what it happens for the rest ofthe season for the Wayne Sporo Little Giants,
because I've been told they have, you know, some athletes in some
ways of getting in the end zone. But I've seen some of the highlights
on you know, on TV threewhen I get home on Friday nights,
and you can see they're talented.Yeah, they just keep running into buzz

(11:41):
saws. I mean, I thinkeverybody that runs into Turner Ashby is going
to get pretty much the same treatment. I'm really looking forward to that Spotswood
Turner Ashby game. Yeah, tata beat them like a drum. But
then again, you know who's who'sta not going to beat like a drum
maybe this year? So well, yeah, I mean that's that's the way
it is. There's that good.Taking a look at Rockbridge County, which

(12:05):
has been a Valley district perennial power, not this year. They haven't won
a game yet. They lost hadBlacksburg thirty eight to twenty. New member
of the Valley District, William Monroe, lost to Madison fifty three to twenty
two. H Clark County forty toseven for the Berryville bunch over Warren County.

(12:26):
Parry McClay beat Mountain View forty fiveto sixteen. King and King and
Queen Kyla towns here where's that?I don't know? The Queen County,
King and Queen, Uh, they'rethey beat an hoe and four Page County
team, but Page almost kind ofdone thirty six to thirty five to five.

(12:48):
You know what, what do youwhat do you hate worse? Getting
just blown out right or losing byone point? I don't know. I
can I can tell you this.I mean, I don't want to lose
either way, but I guess I'drather lose by one point because I know
I was in the fight. Sometimessometimes it feels like like you're just a
dest and you know to you learnto take a loss. I had that

(13:11):
feeling when the hail Mary was completedwhen I was watching watching the Commanders on
Sunday and the only way they couldget beat was a hail Mary and then
an onside kick, and then thehail Mary was complete. Out, Yeah,
here we go. But then theyand you were fine, Yeah,
no more miracles. That was thatwas exciting though it was to watch.

(13:33):
I was on the phone with mymother. I was like, oh,
oh yeah, what my mom,I just saw the greatest thing. Uh
So there you go. That's howit turned out last Friday. Coming up
to this Friday weird who in estruck? Get our first look at the
Eagles against the Harrisonburg Blue Streets ourfirst look at them too. Yep.

(13:54):
Yeah, so no, I'm lookingforward to that. Like I said,
I'm I'm interested. Interested to seetalking is fun and easy. I'm interested
to see what Harrisonburg looks like.Because I mean, to have lost all
three games by significant amounts and tohave not even scored at a school that's
going to be depleted of athletes, because yeah, a budget year, a

(14:16):
cross down, they're gonna be goingand not be a Blue Streak, They're
going to be a Rocktown Raptor. And are you going to have two really
like mediocre teams or is one teamgonna be a lot better than the other.
Sometimes those things come down to coaching, and maybe you know, the
new Rocktown High School gets a coachthat motivates the best athletes to come on

(14:39):
out because it just seems like aschool as big as Harrisonburg, there's bound
to be some good athletes and there. That's why the schools are classed by
population size yacause the odds of gettinga pretty good wide receiver. And when
you've got five hundred more students thanyour opponent, it's pretty good. Well,
I mean, we talked about thiswith a former athletic director, Tim

(15:00):
Leach. Yes, Spotswood once withSpotswood and East Rock. Look at how
good both of those programs are,you know, and how how well they're
doing and if you put them together, oh my, But I mean the
problem with that is though you'd stillhave a ton of super talented athletes who
wouldn't see the playing field. Butyou know, maybe that's the case at

(15:22):
Turner Ashby as well. They've gotall these great players that are starting,
and they've also got a lot ofdebts, you know. Yeah, I
mean it just seems what we've seenhas the depth as well. What are
they doing up in Elkton and penLaird. How are all these kids that
talented somebody's making some big country breakfasts. Yeah, yeah, I mean the
cooking must be good, because Imean you look at the size of the

(15:45):
line from Spotswood Friday night. Imean, the Charlottesville kids weren't small,
but spotswould just look so much bigger. Yeah. Charlottes Field just didn't have
any discipline. I mean, yeah, no, there was none at all.
And I mean and that was fromthe coaching staff down. They just
felt like they gave up and itwas kind of and then they were upset
about it. Yeah, you know, with us all the penalties in the

(16:07):
ejection at the end, Spotswood didpretty well to keep their cool because they
were instigators of incidents that weren't inSpotswood Blazer blue, right, they kept
their cool late in the game.Yeah, penalties went against Charlotteesville. They
didn't go both ways. Yeah,And then there was at one point one
of the Spotswood players had had justabout enough and he turned around. Another

(16:29):
teammate just grabs a nope, we'regoing this way, and I was like,
that's a good teammate right there. We'll see how it goes. Friday
night, East Rockett Harrison Bergen willget started with our pregame show, which
is countdown to kickoff, Countdown tokickoff. I was going there, yeah,
and that's at six thirties. Wehave a little bit of extra time
this year if he'd been joining usfor all fourteen years of our broadcast,

(16:53):
a little bit of extra time forour pregame, the countdown to kick off
spots. I don't know. Idon't want to say they've got an easy
one, but a trap game there. They better not overlook William and Row,
but that would be an easier onefor them. Right Well, that's
what I was worried about with Waynesboroand Turner Ashby last week, because you
know, okay, well we're reallygood and they're really not that good.

(17:15):
Maybe I can take it off, take it take a night off, and
you just kind of put it incruise control. But they did not.
You got Broadway traveling to a rockBridge team. I think Broadway should probably
have it easy with that team. We'll see what Broadway is made of.
Let's see what else we've got.Stanton at Stuart Straffe. What a big

(17:36):
game in Augusta County that, Oh, that's gonna be a good one.
Well, once again we're talking aboutwill either one of those be that seventh
slot in the shen Valley seven. But maybe whoever does win that game belongs
there if they weren't there. Yeah, yeah, I mean I said,
my seventh spot is currently Wilson, but I'm considering putting Stanton in there just

(17:57):
because of their impressive performance. ButI'm yep, I feel that way about
stand too. It's it's a hardchoice. I feel like I might be
leaning towards Stewart Straff one minute, and then I'll consider all the factors,
and I'll think about the Wilson thatyou put in there last week, and
then I'll consider the factors and andthink, well, stand Standon is really

(18:18):
impressive. And I know, yeah, we've seen them, we've seen the
athletes. You know that coming backa lot of speed. When you talk
about the Stanton storm, Waynesboro entertainsBuffalo Gap. It'll be Riverheads after a
bye week. To Wilson, talkabout your matchups. There's a Costa County
boy. Yeah, well, thisis going to be a good test for
Wilson to see if they if theyare who we think they are, and

(18:42):
Riverheads maybe down Katon Cook Cash hasbeen on the sidelines as soon as they
can get him back. And youknow that's that's basically two teams going at
it with likely without their best players. Yeah, yeah, no, I
like that matchup. I really do. Like I said, I think this
will be a really good test forWilson to see where they're at Fort Defiance

(19:04):
coming off their win. We'll goto Madison. It'll be Rockridge at Laray
Page County at Mound view Page lookingfor their first win of the year.
And King William will be at Strasbourg, Okay Central taking a bye week.
Turner Ashby taken a bye week.Clark County all on the bye week.
On Friday night once again, ourcountdown to kickoff begins at six thirty.

(19:26):
We've got it at Harrisonburg taking onEast rock As. After that, you're
right, we will have seen allthe teams in Rockingham County and the city
of Harrison. Yeah. No,so I'm looking forward to that and looking
forward to another Friday Night in thebooth on news radio w kc Y.
