(00:01):
Welcome in and welcome back. DanJoyce and Scott Low talking Valley District football.
What a game we saw Friday night. Yeah, and and I just
never I gotta tell you, Inever believed that Harrisonburg was going to get
it done until everybody and the newspaperarticle describes it very well. The ball
(00:23):
was in the air and everybody inthe stadium could say, oh my,
here it comes. They're gonna win. Yeah, just catch that ball,
and that's what happened. What agreat game. You know, Smith is
the guy that comes up with bothtouchdown passes from Angle, also comes up
with the interception. Angle also hasan interception late in the game. And
(00:46):
then that safety play at the endin the fourth period where Harrisonburg decides to
just run around in the in theend zone, take the safety, and
at some point it was like keepaway what we used to play in the
backyard to get that safety. Concedethe two points, kick it away.
Still East Rock had a chance towin it at the end, but the
(01:07):
final twelve to nine and the fourteengame losing streak is done for Harrisonburg.
The Blue Streaks are feeling refreshed andready to go, you know, I
was really impressed. And the onlyword I could come up with I was
thinking about it on the right homewas grit. Yeah, Harrisonburg played a
gritty football game. They gave upa touchdown on the opening drive, and
it looked like East Rock was justgoing to do what they wanted to do
(01:30):
all night, thirty nine yard drivethat they may look easy, yeah,
and then Harrisonburg's defense was like, you're not doing that anymore, I'm sorry,
and they shut them down at everyopportunity, and in some cases he
stuck shut themselves down. For thatmatter, so did Harrisonburg. It was,
yeah, a situation where you know, at the end of the game
(01:51):
you'll say, well, this iskind of bad because one team has to
lose. In this case, oneof these teams needed to step up and
say they want to win it.Let's go back to the end of the
first half where Harrisonburg had the ball, but they didn't seem to be in
much of a hurry to get onthe field and score. They were in
a strong territory and still didn't seemlike they were in much of a hurry
(02:15):
to push and get in the endzone. And we saw that starting the
manifest with about two minutes to goand Harrisonburg was fifty six yards away from
pay durt and you just thought, you just don't act like you want to
win it bad enough. And thenthey had the perfect play called and wide
open going down with the last minutewin. Yeah. No, and just
(02:36):
really impressed. I thought JJ Angleplayed really well. He of course had
the injury in the first half, and the freshman quarterback came in, and
I thought he did a really nicejob. Right, he did a really
nice job. Then we come backfrom halftime and Angles back in the ball
game and playing better than he didin the first out. Absolutely ends up
with a couple of touchdown passes, both to Smith Bullard. Was incredible.
(03:02):
He was the guy that sparked himon, kind of talked about grit.
That's yeah exactly. It sort ofsaid, you know, we're better than
you thought we were going to be, and you better take us seriously.
I think he's strong, probably lookingat film this week and realizing they had
opportunities to win, but the BlueStreaks prevailed in the end and they they've
(03:24):
got their first win after a fourteengame losing streak. Yeah, so congratulations
to them. Just on you know, when you've got that streak hanging over
your head, you lose another game, it's just one more setback. Can
you imagine the weight that was liftedoff their shoulders Friday night, the way
they were celebrating at the end. That was fantastic. Yeah, this is
(03:45):
love to see a renewed life teamand a Valley District win. You know,
right now, forget about a fourteengame losing streak there in first place
in the district. Yeah, theyhad an easy or easier one coming up
this Friday. We'll talk about thatwhen we talk about the upcoming schedule.
Well, Spotswood continues to roll, you know, four straight for them now,
thirty five to seven. They blowout William Monroe and the Dragons and
(04:10):
another team making their Valley District debut. Elliott Brown once again just looking great
every week thirteen of sixteen, onehundred and eighty seven yards, and he
and the rest of Spotswood realize there'sa lot of talk about how good Turner
Ashby is this year, and theykeep sort of reminding people, Yeah,
we still have to play the game. It's the last game of the year,
(04:32):
and we all know it's going tobe for the Valley District champion.
It's gonna be a good one.It's gonna be a good one. I
was in pressed Matt Craig with twotouchdowns for Spotswood, and it just seems
like again, I watched the highlightswhen I get home on Friday night,
and there's a different name being mentionedall the time. And it's always been
that way at Spotswood, where youknow, usually you hear about this guy.
Well, this week it's this guywho stepped up, and the next
(04:53):
week is going to be another guywho steps up. And they just get
it done and when they need tothrow the ball, they can. With
Brown, he completed his first ninepassing attempts. But according to the newspaper,
The Daily News Record, spots woulduse nine rushers. Like you say,
different name, there's nine of them. You can choose from nine rushers
to combine for one hundred and ninetytwo yards. How great is it to
(05:15):
play it? Spots would if you'rea running back, because I remember we're
not. You know that guy's goingto get the ball every time. That's
the first running back and maybe numbertwo, and that's it. They've got
nine guys. They're given the ballto that's really cool. And they all
range from sophomores to seniors. Right, so these young players are getting the
varsity level experience and succeeding already.Imagine what they're going to be in the
(05:38):
next couple of years. Nicholas Cicadawas and that stepped up this time as
the best rusher with the most yardseight rushing attempts, center touchdown sixty nine
yards and Spotswood continues to get itdone. Yeah, don't have much on
the right up for Broadway, butthey just rolled. Rockbridge is struggling just
(05:59):
a little bit. No wins thisyear. We've seen them in better years
and they've lost by some pretty handyamounts in each game. We'll actually get
our first look at them this comingFriday night when we go up to East
Rock, and I think it's agood opportunity for East Rock to maybe,
like you said, look at thefilm, see where things went wrong against
Harrisonburg, and this could be agood game for them to bounce back,
(06:19):
see if they could put it alltogether. Broadway's final score, by the
way, it's fifty to six andthe Gobblers are three and two, and
they're thinking, you know, yeah, we won a few more games and
we're a playoff team this year,so Broadway still with some high hopes that
they hit into district play. Therewith that convincing win over Rockbridge. Well,
(06:42):
the game that I thought was oneof the more interesting ones we kept
following the score on Friday night wasStanton and Stuart's Draft. Yeah, a
couple of teams vying for getting intothe shen Valley seven. The Cougars held
off Stanton in the storm twenty threeto twenty. And let's talk about maybe
(07:02):
a minor detail, but Stuart's drafthas a kicker name Ethan Syra, and
he kicks a forty yard field goalto begin the game, and that turns
out to be the three points thatwas the difference in the game, because
that was back in fourth game. From what we could see just following along
on the scores, they sure didn'tneed that three points forty yard field goal
(07:23):
here if you're and what we foundalso, if he Strock has a guy
that can kick forty yards, they'relining up for a field goal that could
have won the game or tied thegame. At the end. As you
know, Harrisonburg won twelve to nine, and they even had the wind so
you're thinking they needed to get downto about the twenty five or the thirty
yard line. They might have hada chance to kick a last second field
(07:45):
goal to put that one into overtime. Not too many high schools have a
guy that can kick at forty Congratulationsto the Cougars on yet another good win
for them. Storm running back Braylanfields after that field goal. He gets
a touchdown. Now Stanton has seventythree, but landing Graber comes right back
to the Cougar's thirty one yard run. So now they're on top. Standing
(08:07):
says, oh no, we've gotmark deferred. He scores, he go,
Now they're on top. Baylor Grabelcomes back for the Cougars. He
scores on their drive from one yardout. Now Stewart's draft is up.
They end up with the Grabs rushingfor two hundred and fifty yards combined in
the contest, and you got tohand it to him. They had to
(08:30):
hold off Stanton at the end.But in that great Augusta County rivalry,
there's Stewart's draft. Now a teamthat I think is going to be in
the shenn Valley seven coming up.Yeah, yeah, I mean because I
think there's I was thinking about mymy shen Valley seven and where am I
putting teams after this week's games?Think you have to drop east Rock out?
(08:50):
I think so too, And Ithink you have to drop Wilson out,
Yeah, because they were just pummeledWilson by Riverheads. Okay, stewarts
Riverheads thirty seven or nothing. Youknow about the thing that Riverheads did.
They threw on the first play ofthe game. Yeah, they threw seven
times. Yeah, so Riverheads throwingon the first play was what could it
be? What a great way though, to throw your opponent off, because
(09:15):
who would think playing Riverheads not firstplay they're gonna throw where they're expanding the
office. Yeah, and unfortunately,we had heard that Cayden cook Cash was
back. He was not back.He certainly didn't show up in the statist
was not backs. He's still notplaying, okay, so you know,
still been recovering from that injury. But the Riverheads hung thirty seven on Wilson.
(09:35):
A good football team, Yeah,Wilson's a very good football team,
ISAI And I feel bad about takingthem out of my shen Valley seven,
But I just sort of feel likeI have to yeah, they're two and
three right now. Yeah, butand you'd like to have seen just a
little bit of offense there on Riverheads, but just didn't happen at least not
on Friday night for Wilson then againsaying things like, hey, Riverheads is
(09:56):
pretty good? Is is there nodu a moment of this podcast? Right?
Obviosuly the biggest understatement you could makebuff some success. It look app
in Waynesboro. Both teams were lookingfor their first win. Turns out the
Bison got at fourteen to seven overWaynesboro and sennadoa district play on Friday night,
and Lay just hasn't been putting togetherthe wins this year. It was
(10:20):
close, but Lay lost to rockRidge twenty six to twenty one. Fort
Defiance and Madison Fort used a littlebit around, a little bit of pass
an impressive thirty eight to twenty onewin. This time around, it was
Bradley Head with one hundred thirty twoyards and five touchdowns for four Defiance.
(10:41):
Tame armand Trout had five catches foreighty nine yards to four. Defiance comes
up with an impressive win there, and Page County got their first win of
the year over Mountain View. Bothteams now with one win on the season
thirty eight twenty two. The finalthere and late score. We don't have
the King William Strasburg because that's aMonday night score recording the podcast here on
(11:05):
a Monday Central Ta and Clark Countyhad the buys. They get back at
it coming up this week. Yeah, no, and again we're looking forward
to heading out to East rock forthe first time this year. Going to
be fun to see them again onFriday night, I said, because I
think they're a good team. Yeah, but I think, like we said,
you know, just go to thepenalties and the mistakes are really what
did them in And I think bothteams had that problem last week with Harrisonburg
(11:28):
there was some penalties and you know, so then clean that up. I
think they've got a like's had agood chance to bounce back against rock Bridge
this week. And we're just aboutfor many of the teams that played their
five games, you know, we'regetting that to the after this week,
we're officially through the halfway point ofthe season. Asbury County will be at
Harrison Burtull non district contest for theBlue Streaks. Here's a pretty good one.
(11:50):
Spotswood add Broadway chance for both teamsstand up and prove what they've got.
Of course, the county rivalries arethe best. And you know Broadway
is going to be just rocking thereon Friday. Oh yeah, is Broadway
ever not rocking on a Friday night? This I understand. When you go
to a game, there seriously likeno other atmosphere. And I'm not saying
(12:11):
that other schools don't support their footballteam, but I don't think anybody supports
their football team the way the Broadwayfans support their football team. Really,
it's true. And having said that, I thought the Harrisonburg fans, who
there was a bigger crowd than maybeusual for our game on Friday night because
it was Hall of Fame night, right, But having said that, when
(12:35):
it became obvious that the Blue Streakswere in the game and they might end
this losing streak, the fans inHarrisonburg really came alive. They really did
start attracting a few more there,They really did. And when they game
winning touchdown, yep, like yousaid, the balls in the air and
everyone's there's almost like everybody's holding theirbreath like please catch this, Please catch
(12:56):
this and he caught it and ranin at that place, just bloated that
bowl. Was that that game winningtouchdown? That ball? The pass was
in the air from angle to Smith. It was probably in the air three
or four seconds, but it seemedlike five minutes. Yeah, it was
in the air. There was nosound. Yes, everybody held their breath.
(13:18):
What else is on the schedule? As we mentioned blue streaks taken on
Amher's County, It's Spotswood at Broadwayin Rockbridge County at East rocard game of
the Week, William and Roe toughtask against one of the best teams in
the state, Turner Ashby. Boyafter a bye, well boy, you
know what though, that could playto their advantage They've got or no,
(13:39):
you say Turner Ashby's on the bibe. Sorry, I'm think good William Monroe.
It was like, I'd be happyto have a week extra week to
to tune up for Turner Ashby. But it's the other way. Yeah,
No, Turner Ashby had the weekoff. Good Gravy. They did not
take them lightly though. Wilson isat Stanton, Waynesboro is at four Defiance
Central is heading for King William Stewart'sdraft Buffalo Gap, Mountain View at Craig
(14:03):
County and Fort Entertains, Waynesboro.I think I mentioned that one already.
So they're playing twice, no doubleheader. How about that. We've seen over
our years broadcasting Christiansburg Riverheads now steppingup their competition a little bit taken on.
Yeah, it'll be a real toughChristiansburg team. I'm very interested in
how that one go. Yeah,No, I like it for for Riverheads,
(14:24):
but I know they have trouble sometimesgetting teams to agree to play them.
Yes, because like, why doI want to go and see my
team get beat fifty seven to nothing? They had the nation's longest wind streak
For those who don't, Yeah,I like, who's who's signing up for
that? But these bigger schools like, yeah, Bryan, let's let's get
let's let's run it up and tryit on. Man. Christiansburg chomping out
the bit and lay Page and Strassburgare on the by this. Okay,
(14:48):
So the kids from Strasburg gonna benot having to play two games in one
week, so that that works outreally nicely for them exactly. So Friday
night we'll do it. Yeah,I think we will i'll see you then h
