(00:00):
Hi, It's Soul. Welcome backto Soul Sessions. Another great episode today
chatting with Patrick Martin. Now,this podcast is all about connecting you with
new artists and new music. Thingsyou need on your radar and you need
to know Patrick. Hey, howare you, Hi, Soul. I'm
just wonderful. How are you?I'm doing good? So first things first,
obviously, now you are based inLA but I want to go back

(00:22):
to the basics. You are aWisconsin native, correct, I am,
And I'm actually here right now. It's like twenty miles north of Milwaukee.
It's it's called Sackville. So basicallyjumping off that, what was it like
to come home after you've kind ofcoming off this huge wave right now of
success? You know, it's notit doesn't feel different, I will say,

(00:44):
like with my family, like theyall seem so giddy, and they're
all very excited and curious of whatis happening because I'm on the radio now.
So it's like, yeah, thatis a big deal, and that
I think is the most Coming homeis always special to me. I love
being here and I love my familyand just the it's it's so different than

(01:07):
living in LA. Like it's itcouldn't be more different. It's just nice.
It feels simpler here and it's niceto kind of reset. Okay,
so let's jump into this. DandelionEyes is just perfect. Can I just
say that, Patrick, It's perfect. We play it all the time on
w NCI, and it sounds amazing, Patrick, seriously, like it's that

(01:27):
moment like I've never had. I'mon top forty radio like that that hasn't
ever happened before, and you guysare the first ones to do it,
and it's just that, like it'sone of those things that when you start
making music, it's kind of likethe peak. And obviously they're streaming and
there's all these different avenues, butlike radio is still very much like what

(01:49):
there's very few people alive right nowthat only no streaming. Most of us
that are in our you know, twenties, are feeling like radio is still
like oh my god, I hearmyself the right of passage right it is,
yeah, And it feels like Ithink that's why my family and friends
are like, well, you're afamous, You're a celem and I'm like,
well, not quite, but it'sit's getting there. It's going in

(02:14):
that direction. I mean anybody canhave and what we see so typically now
is people just killing it with thestreaming success. But there are a lot
of aspects that go into making iton Top forty. So I think it's
just that it's classic fuel. Well, it's the company you keep. It's
like you Top forty is the topof the food chain, like there is

(02:36):
that is they're only playing the biggestartist, the biggest of all of that,
and so like to be put inthat, it's the whole thing of
like hearing yourself being played after aduelipa record or Harry or whoever. It
is like it's just like huh, like I'm blowing. I mean that must
be just a nonbelievable feeling. Now, how long were you writing music until

(03:00):
this kind of fell in your lapand it became a hit? Um god,
I think I've been writing music fora very long time since like I
started having crushes on people and youknow that kind of thing. It was
always something I wanted to share withpeople. So it's been in me forever.
It just took a little bit longerto like realize like, oh,

(03:23):
you can do this when you're froma small town, like people do it
you know, absolutely so with DandelionEyes. How did it come to life?
I am like a constant writer,Like I am putting notes in my
phone every single day, like anda lot of times it's literally just a
word or two, Like I'm constantlyjotting just either something I hear someone say,

(03:44):
or I hear it in a showor a movie. I'm super inspired
by film. But this one.I went to a session with Tim Pegnada
and Brian Phillips. They are theydid Shut Up and Dance with Walk the
Moon. Oh yes, so they'reyou know, veterans, and then Joe
Kirkland is other songwriter, and wewere just kind of you know, it
was just a session that was setup and it was kind of like,

(04:05):
you know, we didn't have aplan, kind of blurting out things that
I had written down in my phone, and several of them are in the
song, like Supernova Smile, whereasthe Sun like her makeup, Like those
were already in my phone, andit was just kind of like I'll literally
just take one little phrase and likeoh this I can put with that,

(04:25):
and just like kind of rearranging andthe session just like as soon as we
I read Dandelion as we're like, okay, this has some this has a
good sound to it, and Iwish I could tell you what happened,
but it happened like it's one ofthose things that you just are so in
it. It was a blur andby the end of the session we had
the song. The first demo ispractically the song. It was one of

(04:47):
those very felt like, you know, we were just like blessed handed down.
It's like magic. And it wasweird because I didn't even I didn't
know it was going to be ahit. I felt good, okay,
But a lot of times, likeI write so many songs and you're so
close to them. Well, probablybecause as an artist like you do think

(05:09):
all of your songs are your masterpiece, They're all your babies. So it's
kind of like, all right, world, what do you think? Like
here exactly? So, was thisthe first music video you ever made?
This was kind of the first onethat like I had this like grand vision
of that I've had for a while, like the drones spinning around me like
that. I have been thinking aboutfor ages and yeah, the whole story

(05:33):
like came to me. I wantto say a couple of months ago,
and I was like, this songis it's a happy song, but it's
this, it's more from a placeof isolation, like it's the it's like
a fever dream of the things thatyou're actually longing for as opposed to you

(05:54):
actually have it. The body ofwork is from this. It is this
kind of like long place and thisa little bit isolated and to me,
yeah, it's it definitely comes froma place of like looking at something from
a distance and being like, ohI want this, I need it.
I'm with these robots that it's thethey're moving, you know, there's it's

(06:17):
life, I guess, but it'snot nature. So then you see me
fall and I like end up inthis like kind of like empty you know,
overpass with the light shining through. It's all a fever dream, is
what's happening. So that's why thepeople are frozen because it's not real.
And so I'm realizing in that momentlike, oh, this isn't actually I

(06:40):
mean, I'm not actually experiencing this. This is I'm in some sort of
dream, and so that's why everyone'sfrozen. And then there's this kind of
like well I'm here, I'm gonnaeat this donut. I'm gonna dance screaming
these people's faces. I'm gonna enjoyit while I'm here. That's why they're
dancing and the feeling of like thelaw. This is what I've been wanting
because I'm actually in this isolated, cold place, so far from the things

(07:04):
that I know and love, andI was watching it. I'm like,
there has to be some hidden mesee here. That's what I was hoping.
I was hoping. I just wantedto be thought provoking. I want
to I'm very much like a nerdabout music and about art in general,
Like I'm obsessed with film, likeI've been on this French New Wave kick

(07:26):
and actually next the next visualizer thatwe're shooting for the next single is very
French New Wave inspired, and it'sjust like I get obsessed with these different
facets of art. I've been paintinga lot. I'm obsessed with like Caravacco,
this this style of painting. AMobsessed with art in every aspect,

(07:46):
like fine art, music, dancing, I've I've got a choreographer that I'm
working with for when I'm on stage. I cannot wait to see what you're
cold, because I know it isa lot. Now I want to do
a quick rapid fire just like somesilly questions just for like people, I
love it, okay, texting orcalling? Texting ig or TikTok. Favorite

(08:09):
food, um, chocolate chip cookies, okay, favorite like piece of style,
like your favorite thing that you kindof always incorporate in your look.
I love a jacket, okay, you love a good jacket. Your bucket
list, vacation spot oh um,Japan? Good one? Your favorite place

(08:30):
to eat in Milwaukee, my mom'shouse. Oh okay. Your dream music
collab ooh, this is a goodone right now. Wet Legs. So
they're like this British like alt rock. They're they're so good. You are
too cool for me? And thisno, no, no no, There's
a million people that I would loveto collaborate with. Um. I always

(08:52):
said Rosalia Usa. Now that yeah, I don't know how that collab would
ever work, Like I don't Idon't know where our path like sonically would
cross. But I've always admired herart artistic, like her art is truly
incredible. Yeah, yeah, Ithink that would be like a pop artist

(09:16):
that it's like I could definitely doa song with her, but again where
how not quite true? I mether once, but she amazing. I
accidentally dropped in on her during hervocal We have the same vocal coach,
and yeah, and so like Ileft my sunglasses at his house and I
came back during her session, soI was interrupting. So we just said

(09:37):
hi, and she was perfectly nice. Um, but we didn't actually like,
you know, hey, how youknow, we didn't sit there and
like yeah, well you know la, Yeah, it's it's weird like that.
This part was really intriguing to me. Patrick, So you said,
well, I actually read that awhile ago. It was kind of hard

(09:58):
for you to want to be onstage, can share your music. And
I feel like this is a relatableconcept for everybody, not just in music,
just kind of like knowing you're reallygood at something, knowing you have
a really big talent, but justkind of like having something holds you back.
What's the best advice you could giveto someone that's struggling with that,
Oh, man, I think, yeah, anything that you're afraid of,

(10:22):
anything fear driven. I always say, like, walk through the fire and
you won't get burned. It's oneof those things that unfortunately in everyone has
to do it in life, butlike we're all afraid of something, we
all have anxiety, we all havefear, and the only way out is
through in the best case scenario. And I think that for me, I

(10:45):
was I'm so in love with writingmusic and creating an art. The missing
puzzle was falling in love with performingit, and that happened way later for
me, like in high school. Is kind of like what I've talked about
is how I would like, literallywe'd be walking on stage and I would

(11:05):
cut out and I would literally justnot go on stage because I was so
anxious, and I would get it. I would have panic attacks. It's
one of those things, like anythingin life, like nothing is as scary
as it seems in a lot ofcases, and you just might love it
that it is going to be uncomfortable, but a lot of times those that's
necessary for you to get through. And now I'm on the other side of

(11:28):
it, I'm it's my favorite thingin the world. There's nothing like it,
nothing like it, And I thinkthat applies to so many parts of
life. Like anything, there's amillion cliches. You could say anything worth
doing takes hard, all these things, but it's just like knowing that one
you're not alone and this is theonly way through to that beautiful, extraordinary

(11:52):
thing on the other side. Now, what's next on the horizon for you?
Patrick? What are you working on? Oh? God, so much
I am. I've got I've gotan entire EP album coming, i have
another single coming this month. Reallyexcited to keep sharing. And I've got
a bunch of shows lined up.I don't know if I can actually say

(12:13):
which ones, but some really incrediblefestivals and back to Nashville to write more
songs like just stand Yeah. Busyand excited about it all. So I'm
just trying to soak it all in. Now. What is the best place
for people to keep up with you? On social media? You can Instagram
and TikTok, and you know you'llsee me eventually. You're gonna not have

(12:35):
a choice. You're just going tobe hearing and seeing me everywhere at Patrick
Martin on instad Patrick, you area brought the fresh air. Keep killing
it, dandelion eyes. We're gonnakeep spinning it like it's nobody's business.
And thank you. Get here soon, Thank you so much. Yes,
I will be seeing you very soon.
