(00:00):
Hey, what up. I'm JoshMartinez of the Superstar Crossover on iHeartRadio and
Z one hundred, New York's numberone hit music station, with our guest
TBS champion Mercedes. You pronounce itmoney money. Let's just jump right into
it Forbidden Door this Sunday, StephanieVacier. You're going up against title for
title. Yeah, so you couldbe Racket, you could be Mercedes.
(00:23):
Two belts Do we have that hashtag? Ready to go? We got the
marketing ready, two belts money, two belts money. Okay, I like
it. I like it. Soit's here on Long Island. This is
your second pay per view event withaw The first one you got that one
the TVs title Baby against Willow, which was so crazy. I was so
nervous, really yeah, because itwas almost Yeah, it's been almost a
(00:46):
year over a year and like fourdays before at double or nothing since I've
been in a ring or perform Soit was a long time coming and it
was almost just proving to myself againthat I got this and I got the
confidence. So now this next timearound for Bridden Door, I'm like,
I'm really ready, I'm really excitedand I can't wait to beat two belts
Monday. I love that. Soyou're back in New York City. Any
(01:07):
go to spots here in the citythat you like to check out when you
have the time. They just closeddown. I used to go to this
place across from the Barclay Center allthe time, and I always got pasta
and pizza, which sucks. Andnow I don't have a go to place
anymore. I need recommendations, soyou know what, I'll give you the
recommendations off air or John who's herewith all Elite wrestling, he give you.
He lives in the area. He'llhook it all up. I want
(01:30):
something delicious, Well, it's NewYork City, maybe everything. Most things
are delicious things. Most things, right, you got to get ready for
Sunday, so I can't get toobad. You know the celebratory after there
you go the car that's when youoverload on the carbs. Any any favorite
memories in New York City in yourcareer. I'm always NXT twenty fifteen up
(01:51):
Brooklyn Takeover is absolutely like my favoritematch of all time. The reason why
I feel like I'm the TVs championand the wrestler that I am today.
So that one is always a memory, and then just always coming out here
to train with an amazing rat.I came last night at House of Glory
and stopped by to get ready formy match this Sunday, and just those
memories alone. I love Amazing Redsince I was a teenager, so just
(02:13):
to be able to train with thelegend like that still pick his brain after
so long. I've been training withhim since twenty fifteen, so it's just
so cool how much I've evolved withlearning from him, but even just seeing
his students evolve, even private party. Now they're in aw I remember when
they were just little kids training withthem, and now they're here. So
Brooklyn always has a really special placein my heart. Now you use the
(02:36):
words evolve, which obviously everybody youknow brings up like kind of the women's
evolution. I have some fan questionsand somebody wanted to know Daniel Garcia not
that one. Oh, not thatone. We have an insert here with
that. I'm surprised though. That'sa great point. Where do you want
to be remembered in the lexicon ofwomen's wrestling? I want to be remembered
as one of the greatest of alltimes, someone who didn't take no for
(02:59):
it answer, someone who knocked downevery single door that was locked in front
of her, and someone who justis a badass and so brave and that
follows her heart. Something that Ithink is interesting is, you know,
a few years ago you did astone cold podcast and you were yourself.
You were just you, unapologetically you, which I've always been a fan of
(03:21):
you. It's interesting because there wasso much stuff on social media afterward kind
of like she's you're doing the most, you're doing too much, You're being
to this, you're being to that. And as a minority myself, I'm
one hundred percent Puerto Rican, Ifeel like anytime, most times a person
of color kind of comes out andstands there ground, there's an issue.
(03:42):
Have you ever felt that, notonly as a person of color, but
oh, by the way, you'rea woman. Every time anything I do,
anything I say, there's always goingto be noise. But for me,
I live by the quote be sogood you can't be ignored. That
works so hard that my work can'tbe denied. They can talk all they
want on the internet, they cantalk to their friends that blah blah blah
(04:05):
blah, my work can't be denied. My name can't be left out of
their mouth. So I know thatI'm doing something right. I know that
I'm leaving a legacy. And notonly if I'm doing it for the state
of wrestling. I'm doing this formyself. So I love wrestling so much
and it's this fulfillment that I getwhen I perform and just knowing that I'm
(04:26):
here to make a difference and bethe best. Wow, do it.
My quote that I love by isdon't let anybody tell you shit about your
dreams. There you go, you'vehad the dream of being a wrestler.
Do you kind of remember what itwas that moment, that match, that
memory that made you go, Okay, Now, I definitely have to go
into this full time. I'm nolonger just a fan. This has got
to be my life. It wasjust instantly seeing Eddie Garrow come out and
(04:46):
I was just like, what isthis? This is cool? And then
just watching it every single week, there was just like a connection that I
just couldn't, like keep my eyesoff of him. There's something that has
about his matches that I just loveso much. I loved more than the
Rock, you know. I lovedEddie Garrow, and just the more studying
that I did, I was like, this is my sole purpose because I
(05:08):
have an obsession with wrestling. Eversince I laid my eyes on it,
I couldn't not stop dreaming about it. I'm at school looking at the window,
just thinking about wrestling. I'm justgoing home thinking about wrestling. For
friends asked me to go play withthem outside. I can't. I gotta
watch wrestling like it just became suchan obsession. And then finally, when
I turned eighteen, I joined awrestling school and then here's all my dreams.
(05:30):
You know, fourteen years later. It's crazy. When you follow your
dreams, you manifest and you workhard, you can go anywhere. I
opened this up to a bunch offans. So a buddy of mine named
David wants to know what is yourfavorite Eddie Guerrero match. That's so hard
for me because there's so many, but I really love Eddie versus Ray at
(05:53):
wrestlman A twenty one opened the show. They opened the show. There were
tag team partners and it's because forme, this was like my first match
where Eddie never cheated. You neverdid, you never try to cheat,
And I just love that match somuch, and then of course Eddie versus
Ray Halloween Havic. I love thosematches. Anything with Eddie, Eddie Didn't
Lingo Eddie Eddie and ker Angle. There's just so many things with Eddie.
(06:16):
He is so versatile, he cando at all and I was just like,
I want to be like him,So anything Eddie, But those are
my top two. So it's funnybecause like, I'm a huge fan of
Usking. I'm a diehard fan UltimateWarrior Tattoo, like I'm all in right
and no pun intending where Tatoo oneup? I got it while I was
younger. I find it fascinating asa kid, I had my favorite match
(06:38):
of all time. And then asyou get older and you listen to podcasts
and you listen to performers now kindof break down matches and it gives you
a different appreciation of how matches areconstructed and kind of the storytelling of a
match, when as a kid youjust want to see fun shit, Right,
what was your favorite match when youwere younger, maybe not an Eddie
matches to match in general, andthen what's your favorite match now as an
adult and someone that's in the industry, Oh, I have favorite matches all
(07:02):
the time because I watch wrestling weekly. I watch everything. God, what
can I think of? I loveanything Marifuji from Pro Wrestling, Noah,
I love AJ styles. I loveClaudio Castanoli, I love watching him.
Who else is a go to?I like Zachu Saber Junior. I love
(07:27):
his technique and different styles, mistCo down in CMLO. There's so many
different matches that I love watching, and it's just hard to choose just one
because there's so many companies and there'sgreat matches every single week, and it's
all subjective, like, based onwhat you want. Some people like the
hardcore style, some people like themore technical style. I hate the hardcore
styles, so I'm not going tojudge off with that. But I love
(07:49):
just I love the Lucha Libre,I love the British wrestling, I love
American style. I love it all. Who would you say is the most
underrated performer in North America today? Can I an aw anywhere anywhere that you
have noticed where you go? Oh, I've been watching them or they caught
my eye on Twitter, YouTube andbow. I've been following them, and
(08:11):
they deserve just a little more.I think Willow is such a superstar.
I think she's going to be somethingso massive. She just has to keep
on being herself and she is.She's so beautiful. We have so many
amazing women. Tony Storm is killingit, thunder Rosa has such a hunger
(08:31):
and a fight for more, SkyBlue working her butt off every single week.
Anything that's asked of her she does, and more for the women in
the locker room. So I canjust go down that list, there's so
many. And Chris Statlanders such astrong, powerful woman. Used to be
a stunt woman. Mariah May usedto be just a super fan, took
(08:52):
her butt, flew herself to Japan, went to startop to learn, and
now she is just one of thegreatest that we have on the roster.
So it's just top to bottom. And these are all girls I've never like
rustled with before. They're all girlsthat I just want them to have the
brightest light and the brightest opportunity toshow how great they are. How would
you say your wrestling style has evolvedthe last few years, especially going from
(09:16):
WWE to New Japan briefly because ofthe injury, and then now in AEW,
I try to be a lot smarter, especially, I have to think
about who I work with and whocan you trust with moves and what moves
not to do with some people becauseit's the longevity. And I do a
lot of high flying moves and landingon my knees, and I like to
do dives sometimes or doing flying kneesto the floor. So it's a lot
(09:39):
just thinking about when I want topull out these crazy stuffs and what moments
mean the most, and not doingtoo much. That's what I'm learning about
so much more now. I don'thave to do so much to get a
reaction. I don't have to dotoo many moves. I don't have to
take so many bumps to get thesame feeling for the fans to react a
(10:00):
certain way. So I feel likeI'm becoming more of a vet too,
just like all right, kid,I'm not gonna take that, but but
we can do it like this.No thank you friends, you know,
so things like that. Did anybodytake you to the side when when you
were starting out to kind of giveyou that advice and at the time you
were kind of like, I gotthis. No, I never had I
got this. I've had a lotof great coaches who have changed my life.
(10:26):
The first is probably Joey Mercury,Norman Smiley. Yeah, I've learned
so much from Terry Taylor, WilliamRiegel. I want to be in the
WB without him. Someone that believedin me the most, Dusty Rhodes,
somebody that pulled me aside in hisroom and just talk to me about promos
(10:46):
and character. Amazing read. Ican go on and on of just these
guys that will give me so muchsound advice in this business, and I'm
so thankful for it. Now,I want to switch gears a little bit,
if you don't mind. I havea four year old nonverbal nephew.
He's on this. He's a neurodiverse. Siblings unintentionally get forgotten because of
(11:09):
all the attention that has to goto the neual diver, the other,
the other child, this is neurodiverse. What advice would you have for
siblings that have a neurodiverse sibling oreven just a family member in general?
You kind of have to find yourown escape. Wrestling was my escape,
and I knew that's a place thatI can always run to when I couldn't
(11:31):
scream or cry or get the attentionfor myself. That's why I feel like
I love wrestling. You're larger thanlife. You just have to find your
own little passion that makes you feelso special that you don't need anybody's attention
because you just can watch something orfeel something, or draw something or create
something. Just be creative in findingwho you are and what makes you happy.
(11:54):
I love that. I mean, you recently had the the autism sneakers
the deal with was it Champs?I believe? Was it a Champ Sports
deal? Super dope by the way, And I'm I get very touchy when
I talk about my nephew because it'sjust one of those things that's it is
it is, And it took mea while to realize that I'm getting like
(12:15):
emotional, but it sucks, youknow. But anyway, my sister actually
quit her job and started a nonprofitwhere basically, and I don't know if
what the family struggles were, butit takes so long to get diagnosed,
that she created these sensory boxes tosend to family. So in that three
to nine to twelve months of waitingfor the diagnosis, you can kind of
(12:37):
self diagnose to an extpt by thisbox that she's the sensory box that she's
given, so I knew that.Like when it came yeah, when it
came to like the autists, theautism thing, I was like, I
want to talk to you about thatbecause I feel like that's something that doesn't
get talked about as much. Andthat's in any industry, we don't talk
about special needs at all because peoplejust don't pay attention to what they need.
(13:01):
And it's such a struggle. Ideal with it daily with my brother,
deal with it with my mom.My mom's been dealing with this and
for thirty years, that's how oldmy brother is. It's very hard to
go through. But there needs tobe more voices like you and your sister
to help these children, to betheir voice because they are so special in
(13:24):
this world for a reason, andwe need to take care of them and
give them their special needs that theyneed. And also like I don't know,
like the public school system you wantto or whatever, but it is
it was basically I'm looking back, like fucked up, dude, Like literally
a special at wing where you knewlike if you were in this wing and
there was like this negative like connotationtowards any student that was like on this
hallway or whatever, and it's likethat legitimate segregation. Yeah, for no
(13:48):
reason. But it's just people arelearning, we're growing, and we have
to be the educators to the educators, so on educating people. That is
the quote I'm taking away from thisentire thing. As cool as wrestling is,
that's right there. But let's switchgears a little bit. We got
a couple minutes left. This iscalled the Superstar Crossover podcast. So the
previous guest has a question for thenext guest. The previous guest happened to
(14:09):
be aw World Championswart Strickland. Okay, he wanted to know, what has
the wrestling business done to make youa better person? It's uh changed my
life. It has given me somany more hopes and dreams and opportunity and
taking me to places I have neverdreamt of before. I've traveled the world
and I never thought I was goingto travel the world that i've how I
(14:31):
have. It's made people treat mekind of disrespectfully, but really with a
lot of respect as well. Andit just it's given me opportunity to provide
for my family, which is huge, and provide for myself and not feel
like I have to be scared ofanything because I can just pull out this
card and be like, I'm safeTony so much. Thank you, Tony,
(14:54):
I love you. I'm a girl. Dad. What sport do you
advise that my daughter get into asthe first port she gets it too,
aside from something that she loves obviously, that's the answer. Whatever she's passionate
about this, where she's gonna goto, I would say either gymnastics or
like jiu jitsu sa protection. Yeah, thank you. I want to do
mma. Her mom not so much. Her mom wants to do gymnastics.
(15:18):
I would because jiu jitsu it's alot of rolling too, that's gymnastics.
But you need, especially as awoman, protection. You gotta protect yourself.
You need to no self defense atleast one or two or three things.
And uh, practice your voice youhave. Your voice has to be
heard, even just screaming. Justyour voice has to be heard. Keep
on using your voice. Less thana minute left, I'm gonna just throw
(15:39):
you some random some quick either thisor that or quick question? Would an
answer? You ready? Clear yourmind? Girl? Here we go Patriots
or Celtics. I'm gonna go Celticsright now, just because we won.
Yeah, whatever, Jason Tatum orJaylen Brown, Jalen Brown New York City
or La New York City, abetter tag team champion partner? Naomi or
(16:03):
Bailey? Oh you're trying to getme slapped. Goddamn right, I'm trying
to you, trying to get mehurt, trying to stir up baby?
You really are? And I wontag team paddles with both of them.
Damn would I would I walk withBailey? Hell? Yeah I would.
I'm down for both. Both ofthem are my girls. I can't choose.
(16:26):
I can't choose fair favorite street Fightercharacter? Ry you there? You
go? In sync? Or BackstreetBoys? Back? Who's in the Backstreet
Boys? Back Street? Who's allof them? Uh? Howie? Nick
Brian? If you thinking of Justinterms like that's in sync with Justin?
(16:47):
I guess Land's growing up? Okay, yea, that's in sync. Okay,
there you go. What's your favoritecocktail? Miscal really just a straight
up shot? Yeah, a straightup shot of mescal with the orange slice.
Dog. Let me tell you somethingabout drinking in like your thirties.
That shit does not hit the samethe recovery time, ain't it. Well?
No, not drinking drinking, notgetting blacked out. You can't do
that anymore, but you can havea nice three to five shots of tequila
(17:12):
and not shots like downing them downTequille. You sip them just better than
me, girl, I got alot more weight on you, but you
are definitely better than me. Who'smore bitter nowadays? Ronda Rousey or Brett
Harp I think Ronda. I loveit one more time, Mercedes Monday or
you can put the moan in Monee. We appreciate you coming TBS champion.
(17:34):
Thank you, girl, Thank youfor having me
