Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, guys, Kevin Pell here Louder than Life four the
Kevin Pelle Podcast, A lot of bands and a lot
of fun and it hasn't rained yet. I'm very excited
about that. Today right now I am here with sloth Rust.
How you guys doing doing good? Doing good good? So
what's going on in the sloth Rust fam? What's going
on with you guys right now?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
We're currently on the road on a nice long tour
supporting Bad Flower. Psyched to be here in Kentucky playing
this festival.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
What does it mean to play a festival of this size?
For you guys?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
We like to reach new people and like you know,
get the new fans.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
So it's just fun. We like to come and do
our thing on stage. It's definitely a heavy festival. We're
not the heaviest the bands, but we we can throw down,
so we try to do our best.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
How would you describe your music to someone that might
have never listened to Slothrust before walked up and saw
you guys live for the first time today? A collectic? Okay,
fair enough? What do you guys do each in the band?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I'm the drummer, I singing, play guitar.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Singing, play guitar. Okay, what kind of guitar are you
rocking with?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Oh boy, I play two guitars, mainly play a Fender
jazz Master and Aztec Gold Super Sick, and then I
also play a Tom Anderson Raven Superbird.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
And how long have you guys been doing Slothrust?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
I think about twelve years now, Yeah, long time.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah. So have you guys been there since the beginning? Yep?
So what is the difference twelve years ago to now
for you guys? Oh?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Man?
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Uh, I feel like when we when we first started,
it was very scrappy, DIY, throw our instruments into the
car and no cases and everything. And now we're, you know,
trying to level up every chance we get, you know,
try to be a little bit more professional when we can.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
What's some behind the scene stuff fans might not know
about you guys?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
If I'm not playing drums, I like to cook. You do
a lot of cooking, Try to cook on the road
when I can. Brought a little camping stove on this store.
Only gotten one use out of it, but hopefully we'll
get some more the weather keeps up.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
How about for you behind the scenes stuff?
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
I like to draw a lot. I'm really into crystals.
I like eating what he cooks. I like pretty consistently
in life. What's Will eating? What's Will making? And I'll
get on with that.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
What's something you really hope Will makes every time?
Speaker 4 (02:37):
I always love when he makes pasta. He makes like
such a good pasta.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Well you gotta make that pasta. Yeah, what is something
coming up next for Slothrust?
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Well, we're playing Chicago tomorrow. Okay, Yeah, we're playing Chicago
with Mizzio and Bad Flower at the Riviera Theater. I'm
pretty sure it's the venue. It's hard to keep track
of all the venues and stuff, but I know we're
going Chicago tonight. We're driving there.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
So so you guys don't really even have a chance
to check out any of the bands here today.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Oh no, we will, we will. Yeah, we got four
four faith bands in a row. It's like we're gonna
see Bad Flower Good followed by Highly Suspects, followed by
Pop followed by Hailstorm and though they're all are like
good friends.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Oh so it's like really nice to keep the season
really nice. Yeah, Okay, so you guys have probably been
on what multiple tours over your career. What's a dream
tour for you guys? Any band all over that face?
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
I mean, I'd love to get the Saint Vincent tour. Okay, Yeah,
I'd be happy on the Saint vincentur.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
I'd love to go on like I throw back nineties
like Weezer Pixies tour or something like that.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Speaking of tours, speaking of a festival of this size,
what's the prep work for you guys going into something
like this very little?
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Oh, we we've been playing for twelve years, so it's
like I didn't go before this tour. We did one
rehearsal quick and then we're just ready to ago. We
try to not over over rehearse and make it so
we like excited to play on stage.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
We kind of go back and forth between like times
we're writing and rehearsing and performing. And this summer was
like big writing, so we wrote like a lot of
new material.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
So what is new material? What is your writing process?
There's so many different ways to go about doing it,
no wrong or right way. What's you guys's process?
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Honestly, no specific process. It's been all over the place. Okay, Yeah,
when you're I mean, when you're at it for this long,
like you're gonna hit all the corners of it. This
summer was like very collaborative and like some co writes
and just sort of seeing what shows up and some
concepts stuff, and yeah, kind of experimenting with with like
pretty hands on collaboration.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
It was cool. I haven't asked this question yet today,
so I figured one on. What is a tour pet
peeve of you guys, rather be venue stuff that you've
been counter over the years, anything.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Don't sha in the green room bathroom.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Okay, I'm not pointing out.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
I'm just saying it's a general rule of thought. Doesn't
mean I don't know.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Meh, my god, like probably so many when it comes
down to it. I don't like when I don't like
when in front of house people are like juicing there
they're juicing music like super super loud while you're setting
up years because I have sensitive ears, like one of
those people who's like it's still loud.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
So, okay, what is your favorite thing about playing a tour?
Speaker 2 (05:39):
I getting to play on my drums every night. It's
like the most fun part of this job. There's a
lot of bullshit of being in a band, but performing
is definitely the best part.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
I kind of like the X factor of it all,
which is sort of why I like festivals, Like they're
definitely chaotic, but I I kind of like that that
splash of like, who's to say, what's about to happen?
And when you go to different cities every night, there's
always a little bit of like what now?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
What now?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
So does something for me?
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Some uncertainty and going into things? Yeah, funny, funny enough.
I just had a band walk up and say, hey,
you got three mess to do an interview. As I
was prepping to do an interview, I was like, yeah, yeah,
so I just had to like things opening on the squad.
So yes, chaotic, but a fun chaotic. Yeah, you guys
have been around twelve is years now. I asked this
question for every band, what's some advice you guys would
give to maybe a band just starting out. We're wanting
(06:25):
to break out of being just a local band.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I hit the road and don't don't give up.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
I feel like so many bands that have everything they
need to do it well, we'll.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Try, and it's a really hard thing to get through.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
And I see a lot of bands kind of call
it quits a little too soon, and if you just
keep going, things will eventually develop.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
How about for you leave it all on the stage
every night, like do do your best and then whatever
happens out there, say great fucking show, great crowd, great time,
and like don't don't nitpick, did pick your other players
or your audience too much? Just have it in the
moment and move on.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Great answer again, different answers all across the board from
different bands over the years. You guys have a genuine cover.
Is that what I hear? Yes? Tell me about deciding
on this cover?
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Well, we grew up listening to a lot of nineties
R and B though it was definitely like my two
favorite things growing up musically were musical theater and then
like hip hop and R and B. So it was
like really fun to just think about, like, what's the
song from that era that we could pick into a
maximalist hard rock version of Yes, and we just sort
of were like, let's drive it as hard as it
can be driven.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
As you mentioned that to me before this interview, and
as I say it out loud, I remember you guys
are on the official Louder than Life playlist, and that
song has definitely come in rotation, so now it's all
coming together, and that's how I remember. It's fantastic that
you guys have your own spin on things. It's not
just like a basic cover, right, It's just a fun
thing that you guys like to do. Any final words
(07:57):
you guys want.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
To say to fans, take care of yourselves, take care
of each other, Choose kindness, choose love, rock on.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Be excellent to each other, swalt throw us.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Thank you guys so much.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Thank you
