Speaker 1 (00:00):
Telling Nash welcome on the phone. It's Shane Beemer, head coach.
Good morning coach, Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Good morning guys. Great to be with you.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
What an incredible week.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
It is high Holy week and for Game Cup fans,
some of it got a double meaning for that because
Good Friday is going to be more than just good.
It's going to be exciting at Ways Bike Stadium.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, looking forward to being back in the stadium in
front of the greatest fans in the country. We've had
a great bring practice session here over the last month
and it's to cap it all Friday night under the lights.
And Williams Brice coach.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
You're one of the rare teams now it seems to
still be having a spring game. It seems like a
lot of teams are moving away from it. What made
you decide you wanted to keep the spring game?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
A lot of reasons, and certainly have respect and understand
why some teams may not. But from my standpoint, the
benefits of having a spring game far outweigh the negatives,
if you will, of having won or the people that
don't have it. You know, for us, it's one exposing
our fans to our football program. I want to give
them the opportunity to come out and see the first
(01:00):
glimpse of the twenty twenty five football team. So I
want our fans to be able to be there because
they're a huge part of what we do. Second of all,
there's no substitute for being able to go in a
stadium and play in front of a crowd. We've got
so many new players on our team, and our entire
freshman class meeting the guys that are actually seniors in
high school. As we speak, the entire class is here
(01:23):
already going through classes and practice with us except for
five guys. So for them, it'll probably be the biggest
crowd they've ever played in front of in their life,
and it's a huge benefit for us. You know, there's
some colleges that if they have a spring game there
might be one hundred people in the fans. That's not
the case here in Columbia. So to expose our players
to a big crowd and get them used to doing
(01:45):
that so it's not the first time they'd see it
in Atlanta Game one. And then finally, to me, there's
just no substitute for playing football every year starting over.
We've got a new team, the opportunity to play football,
do it in front of our fans, and then just compete.
If I told our players that we want and having
a spring game, I know they'd be upset because they
just love to compete and they love to play football.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
And not only is it, you know, the experience of
being in Willis probably stadium at night and the light
guys have done an incredible job putting together all the
lights and the special effects and stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
But we can have fireworks and stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
You got called kind of special opportunities for fans to
go on the field. I mean, this is really going
to be up close and personal.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
We want it to be. You know, when we first
started talking about when the spring game was going to be,
what time it was going to be, and all that.
I know, there's a lot going on in Columbia this weekend,
and you know, certainly want our fans to be able
to get out and enjoy all the sports and all
the different activities. But Friday night's going to be great,
and we wanted to make it special for our fans
and get people in the crowd and let them have
some fun. They do a great job for us throughout
(02:42):
the year, but especially on football Saturdays in the fall
and want to be able to give back and let
them experience so much of what the spring game is about.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Also, San beemer with us and I love the fact
that you made this video. I've mentioned it to you
before about when you took the team and you walk
them across the street and then up to the very
top of the bleachers to show them just how hard
it is to even get there for some people. And
then you talked about how hard it is for people
to come up from Bluffting or wherever they're coming from.
People spend their entire day and a lot of dough
(03:11):
to watch these football games, and you wanted your players
to understand that this is an opportunity for people to
come in and see a game for free. So maybe
those people who really have never had an opportunity to
experience Gamecock football in person, they can come out this Friday.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Night without a doubt with And that's one of the
things I thought about. If you know there's some people
that this is going to be the best, to be honest,
this will be a more what's the words, Let's be
a cheaper way to come and see us play other
than paying for gas. If they're driving, but you know,
in regards to the amenities and what you get to see,
it's a great opportunity. And we'll have a lot of
people in the stands on Friday night and a lot
(03:47):
of recruits that will be here as well that'll get
to see our fans. But definitely want to give them
the opportunity to be in that stadium, and it is
a little bit different than a football Saturday, but we
want to make it fun for them. And certainly we're
appreciative and grateful for all of our fans and want
them to be a part of this one Friday night.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Some of them may be more excited about seeing some
of the new players have been reading about the ones
that are really plugged in some guys that maybe not
so much, or maybe wondering some silly stuff like me like,
are you going to ask Leonora Sells to put the
glasses back on? I missed the glasses. I like the goggles.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Look, yeah, I think a lot of people did. If
he plays like he did at the end of the season,
if he plays like he did against Clemson, he can
wear whatever he wants, whether it's goggles, no goggles, whatever.
Certainly want them to be comfortable and all of our
players to be at their best and whatever allows them
to be at their best.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I'm all for not to make this personal, but it
also messes up my non authorized glasses vendor Kioskot decided
to set up on left Road.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
So yeah, that hurt.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, yes, that your business took a hit.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Realize that I'm going to have an opportunity for us
to see a lot of new players. Give me a
couple of names the fans can get excited about.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
You know, certainly everyone knows that we have a lot
of returning players that played a lot of football for
us last season and one postseason honors after last season,
all those guys returned, you know, Leonora Sellers and Josiah
Thompson and Dylan Stewart. I mean those were all recognized
as all conference type guys. You know, returning starters like
Jalen Kilgore and d Q Smith and returning starters like
(05:14):
Nick Harber and Brady Hunt and on and on and on.
So there's Cathon Henry. There's a lot of guys that
are returning. But you're exactly right, there's so many new faces,
and nowadays in college football with transfer portal and high
school signings that leave early every year. It's basically starting over.
So pretty much a third of our team right now
is brand new. You know, people always ask me, what's
(05:36):
the running back situation going to look like with us
losing Rocket Sanders. Well, we bring back a handful of
players that were here last year, but we've brought in
a transfer from Utah State, Rodswell Facing that's going to
be a good player at the wide receiver position. We've
got five true freshmen guys that just graduated high school
that are on our team, one of which from right
(05:57):
here in Columbia, Jordan Gidronz from reg Hue High School
as well. So I think it's an opportunity for our
fans to see those guys. And then the linebacker corps.
Obviously Deebo Williams is gone, Bam Scott is gone, so
we've got to replace those guys, and we're going to
replace them with some transfers that have come in, one
from Alabama, one from Florida State, but then Fred Johnston returns,
(06:18):
but then a ton of high school freshmen, so that
linebacker crew will look brand new. So that's what I
would say, we really like the young players who really
like the new players, transfers and freshmen. And there's a
handful of positions, particularly wide receiver and linebacker, where there's
a ton of new guys and it's a great opportunity
for our fans to see them for the first time.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Shan Beemer with us and I used to be the
PA announcer for Ridgeview High School football and when Jordan
was a freshman, I called him the first time I
ever called his name. I said, Jordan Gidron and somebody
ran up to the booth and said it's Gidron and
I said, oh, okay, and they said, get used to it.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
You're going to be saying it a lot.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
And they were absolutely right.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
That kid was amazing.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
They did.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Yeah, I'm excited to see what he could do here.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Well, I'm glad they got you right on the name.
I got to catch myself from Tom to Tom as well.
But he's he's doing a great job, doing a great
job on the field and doing a great job academically.
Making all a's right now and excited that he's a
game cock.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
This is a little bit awkward. I know your name
was being brought up as one of the best coaches
in the country for building culture. A lot of people
responding nationally this week to what happened at Tennessee, and
I find it ironic that the kid's name was Nico.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
I'm Alivia, And.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
They said that Shane Beemer has built a culture where
kids are not coming for the money, They're coming because
they believe in the process of what he's doing. How
much harder is it now with the nil deals and
people are looking for money. Are you passing on recruits
or are just looking for money?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I think if that is their number one factor that
they're looking for in a school, it can't be that.
I realize that money is a aspect of it, and we'll
certainly have those conversations, but if that is your number
one motive and that's the only thing you're looking forward,
then I don't think you're going to be a fit
(08:08):
in this program. We've certainly, I'm not saying that we're perfect.
We've made some mistakes. We've brought some guys in that
once they got here, we realize they weren't, you know,
quite of the right fit for what we were looking for,
what we wanted a program or in a player. And
so it starts in recruiting, but then once they're here,
I think more importantly, it's just being you know, transparent
and honest with guys and making sure one they're choosing
(08:28):
South Carolina for the right reasons when you recruit them.
But then once they're here, just continuing to be consistent, transparent, honest,
and you know, be willing to have tough conversations. So
we've made mistakes, but I know this, We've got a
lot of guys that are excited about being our program
and they're here for the right reasons as well. And
as it always smooth waters no, but you know, when
we come across obstacles or adversity, I think we try
(08:51):
and you know, handle it the right way and hopefully
avoid getting to those points with how we're doing things.
And during the process.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
You have said before and I want to get around
your kitchen tables here for a second, inside your family.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
And by the way, how.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Are they they are great? I appreciate you asking, but.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
I know that you say that they're the toughest critics ever.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Did you lay down a law that none of you
can actually create a TikTok account just to make extra
money by getting the players? And also the fancy inside
tip on what's really going on with Shane Biember's mindset
for the new year.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
We haven't, but we probably need to. I'm more worried,
you know. I've got two teenage daughters, so I feel
like once or twice a week, I'm getting asked to
do some ridiculous, stupid TikTok in my kitchen when I
get home that I'm leary of, without a doubt. But
try and be a dad first. But also it's a
great point just making sure all three of our children
have been an amazing wife and she does an amazing
(09:42):
job with them when I'm gone, for sure, but just
making sure they understand that we're in a college town
and you know, just like our players are in the limelight,
they have a different childhood, if you will, different experience
because you know what their dad does for a living,
and be smart with what they're doing throughout the week
as well.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Coach, We've seen you at just about every sporting event
there is. You know, you've been to the hockey games, soccer,
men and women, baseball. Is there anything left that you
haven't seen yet? At University of South Carolina Athletics. Mmm,
have you been to an equestrian match out in Blythewood.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
No, I was going to say the two that I
haven't gotten to. I'm trying to think of all sports
that have since I've been here at Carolina.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
We got a brand new swim coach.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Y'all named the two. I haven't been able to get
to a swim and dive meet, and I haven't been
able to get to equestrian. Those are the two. And
a lot of times if I haven't been able to
get to something, it's literally just because schedules conflick. Like
I enjoy watching volleyball, but volleyball's really challenging because they
play during the football season. Same thing with soccer, and
(10:46):
it's hard to get to a lot of those games.
But if I'm in town and there's an event going on,
I try and get there. I haven't been able to
get to them this year as much as I would
like as well. But you know, I love that aspect
of one supporting all game call athletics to you know,
being in college town. I love that all of that
is available not just to me, but to all of
your listeners and everyone here in Columbia that can go
watch gamecock athletics and then as a dad too, I
(11:09):
enjoy taking my kids there and to be able to
expose them to student athletes and sporting events at this
level is a really cool opportunity.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Back in the day, when your dad was having a
deal with the media, there were always like three or
four five really big sports outlets you had to make
sure that you have the questions from. But now there's
so many different people to have all these blogs, and
there's seems like everybody in the world's got an opinion
on your program. When you saw I think it was
last week, I saw all ratings of the top five
SEC quarterbacks and Leonora sell Us is ranked fourth, And
(11:36):
I'm like, wait, Manute, what are you telling me fourth?
Speaker 2 (11:38):
To each their own. I know this, I wouldn't trade
him for anybody in this conference, and that's no disrespect
to the other quarterbacks. But Leonoris is he's a winner,
and he's a great young man on and off the field,
and we don't pay a whole lot of attention to that.
It's like, I know, tell the team there. Last year,
at this time, no one thought I was worth a darn.
No one thought our team was going to be worth
(11:59):
a darn. Now there's accolades coming our way, and we
didn't listen to it last year and people were telling
us how bad we are. We shouldn't be listening to
it this year when people are telling us how good
we are. And then all you need are reminders where
there's the preseason rankings of quarterbacks or teams players, whatever
it might be in South Carolina or Lenora Sellers or
whoever else is nowhere to be found. So not that
(12:19):
we need that motivation, but there's still enough out there
to make sure we certainly don't start reading or drinking
the kool aid and reading all of our press clippings.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Coach, I know you need to get going. Two quick
final questions or not even questions. This one is just
a comment. We got the twenty twenty five Garnet and
Black Spring game happening this Friday night. There are auction
items people can have VIP experiences. I've put a link
out on the Morning Rust blog so people can get
that if they But that auction closes Tuesday night at
seven pm, so you got to hurry up and get
(12:48):
your bids in. And finally, I know we're all huge
Gamecock fans, but I am becoming a Chanta Clears fan
just because they have free concessions this year there.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Can we make a move? Can we do a push?
Speaker 2 (13:04):
That's a better question.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
When you're getting our athletic director Jeremiah Donati on the phone,
hopefully as soon. That's a better question for him. I
know this fellas. There's revenue sharing coming to college athletics,
and we've got to come up with twenty point five
million dollars from a rev share standpoint, and that money's
got to come from somewhere. But it's not coming from
(13:26):
this weekend because spring Game obviously is a great opportunity
and it's not a moneymaker for us, it's a great
experience for our fans on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Well, just know, whenever Sally objects to me to get
in the third or fourth hot dog, I'm like.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Somebody's gonna make up the difference over here, Sugar. I
gotta do everything I can to help out.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
That's true. Everyone's trying to do their part.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
And I go heavy on the game. Cock Red catch up.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
By the way, Coach San Beamer, thank you so much
for your time.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Excited about Friday Night?
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Yeah, I can't wait. Love listening to you. Guys, and
I love being on with you this morning as well.
Keep up the great work.
