Speaker 1 (00:00):
Really excited about this. I get to sit down with
Ed Helms. He played Andy Bernard on the Office. He
was Stu in hang Over one, two and three. He's
now the host of Snaffu, a new podcast on the
iHeartRadio podcast network, which you can download right now. How
did the creators of the Office bring Andy the character
to you?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
That's a great.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Question, and to be honest, I don't know sort of
what conversations were happening, but I do know that they
just sort of said, hey, yeah, we think we have
this fun idea for a character. He's like a Connecticut
yacht club kid. And I left the meeting like, I
don't know what's going to happen. I don't even know
if they're going to introduce this character or not. It
(00:41):
seemed like just an idea they had. And then I
got a call later on, Hey, come out and do
a few episodes.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Let's see how this works.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
So did you bring singing into it or did they
have that written that they wanted somebody who could sing?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
I believe you had to. I didn't.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I think I injected that, yeah, there was You're hitting
on something really cool, which is that the cast of
the Office was so good.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Everyone would improvise and.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Endow their characters with these weird little traits, and the
writers were so good they would watch that pick up
on these things and then start writing them more into
these characters. So that really was this cool creative feedback
loop between the cast and the writers. I think a
cappella was part of the original conception of Andy.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, but now what it turned out to be, because man,
it was what it turned out. Well, since we have
a couple of minutes left, what I want to do
is I want to go over a couple of major
characters that you've played, and I want you to tell
me what you think that character would be doing in
real life. Now, what do you think Andy Bernard would
be doing in real life in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Dean of Admissions Cornell University.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Nice, okay, Brad Gerlinger from The Millers.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Oh, definitely in El Salvador, in a prison.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Solid and then Stu Stu uh oh you have some
reservations on Stu.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Well, no, no, I have to think about this. Here's
the thing.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
I think that Stu probably got got therapy and figured
some figured himself out a little bit and is lit
and is now a happy family man with a with
a successful dental practice, and uh and uh he and his.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Lovely wife are just rocking it.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Just had like you know there, it's that they're just
like killing it in the suburbs somewhere.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
And then the final question on the office you ended
up getting a tattoo in real life? Does that Helms
have any tattoos.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
You'll never know.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
You can download SNAFU on the iHeartRadio Network.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Thanks Ed,
