Or straight down the middle. Itwent straight down the middle. Then it
started to book just we weep it. That's when my caddy lost sight of
it. That little white pellet hasnever been found to this day. But
(00:28):
it went straight down the middle, like whacked down the fairway. It went
smack down the fairway. Then itstarted to slice, just snitch off line.
It had it for two but itbounced off down. My caddy say,
(00:51):
as long as you're still in thestate, you're okay. Because it
went straight down the middle. Fineway. The sun was come see us
(01:15):
the shooters, Hey, huddle up. Steelers Nation is Tank and Mike for
Steelers chalk talk. You know,Mike is like negative twelve today And I
called Mike. I said, mytootsies are going to freeze if we go
down to the river instead. We'reat Shooters up here in the North Hills,
Wexford, beautiful if you're a golffanatic or a lover of great food.
(01:37):
I just had the blue cheeseburgers. You see that. Of course you
got any on there? Yeah youdo? Yeah? I did, well.
I want to eat it later. We're at Shooters. The good folks
here at Shooters indoor driving range.Awesome place to come our new home during
the winter months to talk about yourSteelers and all things Steelers Chalk Talk.
Come. If you haven't been toShooters, you gotta come. You're a
(01:57):
golfer, you like it. Wellknow you got indoor outdoor. They got
the heaters, and in those heaterswhen they get them going, it's cocing,
so you are warm. You're notthat cold outside. But they also
have the indoor simulator as well. And then obviously a bunch of TVs for
game days, Saturday, Sundays, anything you want to watch. Yeah,
and the foods obviously the NFL Playoffscoming up. And then sure enough eventually
(02:20):
you'll start getting some March madness. So this is probably the place to be.
I got I got January madness goingon. So thank you Shooters for
having the Steelers Chalks Talk show withTank and Mike here. So let's now
huddle it up and talk some Steelers. Huddle up Steelers Nation. It's Tank
and Like for Steelers Chok Talk. You know what you normally see the Chiefs
(02:40):
statue behind us, Mike, Areyou see the Rocky Blyer memorial over there
at Franco Harrison Memorial it's freaking coldhere in Pittsburgh. Benson, you're cold.
No, it's way too cold. And that's why you chose a golf
thing to try and warm you upa little bit, just to visually warm
you up. We'll see, Mike. It's an analogy because you know this
as well. When the season's done, the boys go golfing, and unfortunately,
(03:05):
eure Pittsburgh Steelers are going golfer. So the news came out just a
little while ago coach Mike Tomlin willbe back for his eighteenth season with your
Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike, there's somuch to delve into here. The most
important thing I heard was this thatthere will be wholesale changes at coaching positions.
(03:28):
So I'm going to go through threecoaches right now that I think have
seriously monumentally let down the Pittsburgh Steelersover the last ten years. We're going
to talk about offensive coordinator, offensiveline in the defensive coordinator position. Well,
I know where you're going with that. When you say we're going to
go over the last ten years,I just know you too well. However,
(03:51):
their due changes do need to bemade if they if Coach Tomlin expects
to hold on to this job moveforward. You know, it was a
couple of years ago. Even defensivewise, the defense started to struggle a
little bit, you know, Butlerwas the defensive coordinator. There was the
rumblings a little bit, and thenhe had to make a change to kind
(04:13):
of hold on to that and hedid. Now that's happening offensive wise,
he's and as well. And andthe thing being offense, you can't go
in house anymore. You have togo out and find someone. Now.
I know Matt Canada was kind ofoutside, you know where they brought him
in, but he was in thebuilding next door not too many years before.
(04:34):
He was a college more of acollege offensive coordinator at PITT. I
think they got to go after abigger name, and quite honestly, a
team that's you know, a guythat's more familiar with like a San Francisco
type offense, a Green Bay Packertype offense, a Miami Dolphin type offense,
(04:56):
where where they can well, well, Grudy will not take an offensive
coordinator job. Rudy wants to bethe head coach and he should be.
Yeah, so I think they're goingto go more for a guy that is
underneath the Kyle Shanahan, Mike McDaniel, type Tree, Matt Laford, where
they can run the ball successfully, have a lot more play action pass and
(05:17):
make things a little bit more simplefor the quarterback with his reads. Now,
look, I also want to getin the offensive line here. I'm
not going to tear into coach Tomlin, but it has been quite apparent this
He is good at evaluating talents. He has brought you some guys along the
way along with the Steelers scouting department, the scouting department hanging your hat on
(05:40):
a scouting department and Andy Widel, who will talk about a second. They've
done a good job of valuating talent. TJ. Watt, It goes on,
Alejandro Villanueva made a player out ofhim. Here's the thing, though,
we obviously all can see that coachTomlin is not good at evaluating coaches.
(06:03):
Well, you know, so whatyour coach? So what you're saying,
starting with Todd Haley, Randy Fiekner, Matt Canada, the current offensive
Lion coach, firing Dick lebou goto hell fires Dick lebo one of the
greatest defensive minding and Bruce Himns aswell, but to bring his buddy.
The point is is coach Tomlin isone of the I will say he's one
(06:24):
of the all time great leader ofmen. He is a great motivator,
He is a great leader. Hegets these guys rallied to play. Now,
with that being said, you know, he's never had a losing season
in Pittsburgh and everyone talks about that. But again with that being said,
Shannon Sharp came out not too longago and ripped them because what you're evaluated
is on championships, not winning andlosing seasons. So you know, if
(06:48):
the Steelers were to let coach Tomlingo, there's no doubt my mind that
you know, the Washington Commanders oranother team would try to pick him up.
That's it's so impossible today though it'stoo Thursday. He just you don't
know, I don't I doubt theSteelers will allow him to leave. I
think that would be more of asituation where if they were willing to trade
for him, and then maybe theSteelers would, you know, you know,
(07:12):
kind of go into that with anopen mind. I doubt that.
I think with the thing with coachTomlin is he's a great motivator, great
leader, of men. He canget the teams fired up. He is
a good defensive mind. He needsto really rely on probably his GM coming
in and bringing in dan Andy Wideland bringing in this new offensive coordinator.
(07:35):
In overhauling the entire offense. Youbring in the OC, let the OC
bring in his guys, and youknow, it's okay. I mean,
you're the head coach. You canyou can have a little bit. Hey,
we're gonna go for it on fourthdown. You got two downs here
on third down. But it's okayto let go and let the offense do
the thing. I like to lookat the Detroit Lions with Tan Campbell does
(07:58):
the modern day Bill Cow a formertight end. He lets his offensive coordinator
Ben Johnson do his thing, helets his defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn do his
thing, and he's kind of theman that kind of holds it all together,
oversees it, but he lets hiscoordinators and his coaches do their thing.
I would like see coach Tomlin allowthe offense to do that. Maybe
(08:20):
not so much him pick the OC, but maybe you know an outside source.
You know, really, hey, this is what we want to get
back to. We want to getback to Steeler football. I want to
take the pressure off of the quarterback. We do not have Ben Roethlisberger,
who is a you know, probowler, future Hall of Famer. We
have Kenny Pickett. Now he's stilldeveloping. Okay, is he done?
(08:41):
No, Mason Rudolph, he wasdone three years ago when he came in
and replaced Roethlisberger with some injuries andstuff. But now it takes time to
progress quarterbacks. It takes time tomature. Play, get beat up a
little bit, come back out, watch from the sideline. Learnt. They
talk about the speed of the game, it's not so much the player's speed,
(09:01):
it's the processing of information in thatsystem, realizing a defense and understanding,
all right with this defense, where'sthe best place to go with the
football. That's what's going on withKenny Pickett. That's why he started to
struggle a little bit. It's alittle bit of a sophomore slump. There's
a book out of him. Call. Defensive coordinators now have a pro scouting
(09:24):
report on him where they can kindof attack him a little bit better.
And that's kind of what happened thisyear. Mason Rudolf had some success.
Now is he the answer. Idon't know. Christmas Present. I was
at that game. It was beautiful. But my point is is the quarterback
position takes time. But you gotto have an oc come in and you
got to commit to him, andyou've got to commit to his system for
(09:46):
the next four or five years ifyou want Picket to develop, because changing
systems over and over and over isnot helping his development. And that's what
you get. You know, lookat look at the blueprint. One of
the best blueprints out there is whatthe Packers did far to Rogers and then
Rogers to Love. Now that transitionbetween McCarthy and Lafloor, Rogers was still
(10:09):
the guy, and it wasn't untilLove was underneath the Floor's system a little
bit watching Rogers did he get achance to come in and play, and
he played right and he obviously hada great playoff game and they'll still in
it. So my point is isyou've got to get a guy that has
a system that is quarterback friendly, that can kind of take things off,
you know, take things off ofhis shoulders a little bit. Put it
(10:31):
more on Nagy Hare, put moreon the old line, get that play
action pass, Friar moves should bemore and then and then relign use Austin.
You don't need to go shoot out. Can he Pickett is not Patrick
Mahomes and he's not and he's notJosh Allen And then you look at yeah,
(10:52):
can he do that? Possibly? But someone's got to it, you
know, with the receivers here, someone's got to sit down and talk to
the receiver and say, this isfootball. This is a team game.
Listen. I get it. You'regonna make the business decisions here and there,
but when your guys putting his button the line, you should be
fighting your butt off for him.You want to make a business decision,
(11:13):
run out of balance instead of gettingtackled. But when it comes to making
a block, you got to makethat block. Ain't no iroon team,
but you got to find a guythat can do those type of systems that
can make things easier for that quarterback. And then build the defense. Look
at the look at the one ofthe best defenses potentially or the Niners.
They will They got Chase Young anduh and Boso as well. So I
(11:37):
think I think this The Steelers gotto go out and find a guy that
is willing to run the football thatis willing to use play action pass and
take take a little pressure, multipleformations, tight sets, explode out,
get wide, do different things tokeep the defensive guard, use the emotions.
Look at what Mike McDaniel's doing downin Miami with Tyreek Hill emotion.
Teams are trying to double him,but they were able to move him around
(12:01):
and create that one on one matchupwith motion and shifts and different formations.
That's what the type of coordinator youneed, a guy that's creative to do
that and not just do the littlequick screens all the time. You've got
to be able to play action pass, put the ball out there, show
it, suck the linebackers up,and then get in that intermediate level in
front of the safeties. Look,so what most of you, and I've
(12:22):
read your comments on our Steelers chalktalk dot com website are Steelers chalk Talk
YouTube page. Hey, by theway, go like our YouTube page.
One lucky person's going to win aJack Lambert jersey in twenty twenty four going
to this. Mike Tomlin's a goodhead coach. He can motivate people,
but it is obvious he's not goodat evaluating coach's coaches on the arc.
(12:46):
Now to the offensive line. You'vecertainly heard me raving for a couple of
years now. It's obvious that coachTomlin doesn't know anything about offensive line play.
He just doesn't because the glaring mistakeswith this offensive line are apparent to
somebody like me who does know alittle little bit about offensive ply. I've
(13:09):
spoken with Russ Grimm, I've spokenwith some other NFL guys. The current
offensive line coach, nice guy,but he's got to go, Mike.
They're fundamentals, Well, they improve, They improved the leagues did he did
because they were good athletes, BroderickJones, for example. But the point
there is coach Tomlin should be ableto look at tape and say, this
(13:31):
is what my offensive line's doing wrong, and I'll tell you some of the
things are doing wrong. For example, Proderick Jones got swam swam. It
wasn't even a real swim move bythe Buffalo Bills player. Why he was
standing too tall, he didn't movehis feet, he didn't attack the center
of the body. These are basicfundamentals. When you see the Pittsburgh Steelers
(13:54):
guards tackles, even sometimes center's pullinganymore. You see like a big body
move like this. The offensive lineplay is predicated a lot on physics.
You got to throw that elbow likethat to get turned and get downfield.
They don't do that, Mike, they don't. It is Joe Moore taught
(14:16):
me that at pitt The Joe MooreAward goes to the greatest talking to little
details. But details have cost thisteam. Details have cost this team going
to super Bowl. You're talking aboutit. You need again, So get
me a details. Get me anoffensive coordinator that knows what the hell he's
doing, not jet sweeps like MattCanada, Todd Haley's ego lead in the
(14:39):
way. Get coach Tomlin out ofthe way, Let Omar and let Andy
Widel a really smart offensive and defensivemind, football minds. Get the coaching
staff. They need defense. Well, it starts with the OC though,
so you know, Butler would havenever been Sorry to say this, Butler
would have never been a defensive coordinatorfor any other team. But he was
(15:03):
like Tomlin's best friend. Well, and that's the thing, and that's and
and you can't blame him for that, But that's where uh, Coach Tomlin's
loyalty to his past coaches that havehelped him get to where he's at.
I look, I love you much, but if you're messing up my football
team at quarterback, I love youlike a brother. If I ever worked
(15:26):
my way and get to a certainspot, I'm not going to just bring
you on as an assistant just becauseyou know I'm loyalty. You know,
listen, he could bring him onas an assistant, but that doesn't mean
he needs the title of defensive coordinatoror offensive coordinator with you know, with
Randy Fickner being a former coach ofhis and uh and Butler being a former
coach of his as well, I'mnot saying those guys aren't good guys,
(15:48):
Unles saying listen, they coached,Yes, they worked their way up as
well. However, the NFL isdifferent, is a different game than the
college game. It's just it's justcompletely is Uh. You have to allow
the playmakers to make plays. However, you do have to help the positions
that take time to a little bitdevelop a little bit more O line.
(16:08):
Yeah, it takes you know, you can get in there and block,
but the details matter. So whenyou hire that munch was Mike Munchak a
good offensive line coach. Yeah, well you love my abs. So what
happens is you when you go outand you get your new offensive coordinator,
you have to that offensive coordinator whenhe comes in. He's not coming in
and going well, you know,I could probably go with this guy,
(16:29):
or I could go with that guyor this guy. Now that OC's coming
in saying this is my option optionA for my O line coach, Option
B form my own line coach, option C. This is who I want.
Are you guys? Okay? Sothat's how the interview process will go.
And you can't sit there and say, Okay, you're gonna be my
line coach or you're gonna be myO C, but I'm gonna pick all
your other coaches. No, youcan't do that. You have to let
(16:51):
the offensive coordinator pull in his guysand do his thing. You can't micro
manage it. You got to bringin the guy, let him go with
it. And that's the way. That's the way the teams are being successful
nowadays. Absolutely, that is themost paramount thing that I took away.
And it sounds like Mike as welltoday from Mike Tomlin's press conference, he
will be back for his eighteenth yearwith your Pittsburgh Steelers. And I'll leave
(17:15):
this segment with this, and I'vesaid this since the beginning of the year,
the offensive talent with Naugy Warren,Friar Mouth Pickens, even though he's
a little crazy, Deontae and Austin, Austin that that guy, he's going
to emerge next year. I haveone of the guys. You get a
(17:37):
good offensive coording, Yeah, andthat's the thing you got to go get.
You go out and get the OC. Now, when you get the
OC, he comes in, pickshis O line coach, he picks his
his quarterback coach, he picks hisrunning back, his receiving he picks all
of his coaches. And then he'sgot to be comfortable with the quarterback position.
Is he comfortable Okay, yeah,I'm comfortable with Can Pickett. I
(17:59):
want to develop him. Is hecomfortable with Mason Rudolph being the starter?
Is he comfortable with Kenny Picock competingfor that starting job? Or do they
say, hey, let's go outand get a guy like a Kirk Cousins
or maybe another like a Joe Flacco. Let's steal him because the Browns still
have Deshaun Watson. So let's gosteal Joe Flacco and let's get him for
(18:21):
his last year or two and seeif Picket can learn something from him,
and then go forward with a goodoffensive Coordinator's gotta know a good quarterback,
Well, he's gonna one a guythat kind of knows his system already.
That's typically the way it goes. All right, absolutely, all right,
it's Tank and Mike for Steelers chalkTalk. Remember like our brand news Stealers
(18:41):
chalk Talk dot com Stealers chalk Talkdot com website. There it is right
there, come see us at Shooters. I was it went down the middle.

I hope the life of the golferis not all glue. Oh,
they charges for listening in the lockerroom. But I'm in my glory.
When wrapped in a towel, Isaid, it went street down the middle.
Where it wound up is the middle. But it went street down the
(19:59):
middle, straight down the middle. It went straight down the middle. Then
(20:27):
it started to book just a weeweep it. That's when m cady love
come see us at Shooters. Hey, huddle up. Steelers Nation is tank

So thank you Shooters for having theSteelers Chalks Talk show with Tank and
(21:56):
Mike here. So let's now huddleit up and talk some Steelers, all
right, Hoddle love Steelers Nation. It's Tank for Steelers Chalk Talk. On
a cold blustery day after the defeatto the Buffalo Bills. You know,
there's a lot of well question ifMike Tomlin will be forced to leave,
whether he will be traded, whetherhe will leave on his own. I
(22:19):
personally think Tomlin's time has passed.I'm not going to go into the whys
of it, but I think foreighty percent of us in Steelers Nation,
it's quite clear that his time haspassed. The man behind me is being
quickly recognized as the greatest coach incollege history. Fairmont West Virginia's own Nick
Saban, the Steelers and aren't Rooneyneed to hire Sabin immediately? This week,
(22:45):
look, Nick Saban openly admitted hedidn't retire because he didn't love the
game anymore. He didn't retire becausehe doesn't love Alabama football culture. He
didn't retire because the game has passedhim by in the battle to fight for
another national championship. Nick Saban hasretired because he's done with the bs that
(23:07):
the NCA has let out of thePandora's box with anil agreement, and well,
the portal the portal Tank's opinion, you get one portal change. That's
it, cupcake. You don't getto bounce around like some ridlin kid,
high school kid that doesn't know whathe wants. Anyway, that's not the
(23:30):
point. The point is one ofthe best American football coaches on the planet
is now available in Nick Saban. If you get Saban here, you get
a known commodity. And I don'twant to hear about the failed experiment with
the Dolphins. Okay, everybody maturesprofessionally, hopefully if you're any damn good.
(23:55):
Okay, everybody gets better at whatthey do. Look at Bill Belichick.
He didn't do well with the Brownshis first time around, but with
the Patriots, need I say moreSteelers Nation. So look, I'm adamant
about this. It's time to moveon from Mike Tomlin. It is time
to get a man who understands somethingabout winning. I heard a recent quote
(24:19):
from coach Saban and it went likethis. You know, losers don't mind
being around other losers, but winnersthey don't like being around losers because they
have a goal to set. They'reon a mission. So I'm adam at
about this. Higher Nick Saban thisweek, Just Asknaji Harris or Minka Fitzpatrick
(24:45):
or any of the Alabama players thathave gone on to play in the NFL
if they think he could turn SteelersNation around immediately. I know he could
because the same principles that made hima winner at Alabama he will implement in
Pittsburgh. Now, you need acouple well assistant coaches that are Steelers in
(25:06):
bleed black and goal. James Harrison'syour linebacker coach. Bring back Dick Lebau,
one of the greatest defensive minds ever. Mike Tollman threw him out with
a garbage Get Bret keesel in here, Joe Green is an advisory position to
do some defensive line coaching. TroyPaula Malo might want to get into some
(25:26):
coaching too, ur Rod Woodson. So the point is Nick Saban Pittsburgh should
be you'll next head coach. Huddleup, Steelers Nation, It's tank for
Steelers jok talk. I'm hunkered downbecause it's a cold, nasty and the
hangover from that Bells games has gotme hunkered down this morning. The old
(25:49):
quarterback Mike mcmahonuel, he's up inthe North hill's crying on his terrible twel
but he does have his lions tolook forward to. You know, I
just want to get into a coupleof things real quick. Appreciate all you
guys that follow Steelers chalk talk, whether you're listening on Fox Sports Wheeling Pittsburgh
Radio Saturday mornings or watching our YouTubeclips throughout the year. I want to
(26:15):
say something. I'm not going tospeculate why Mike Tomlin walked off the stage
last night when Brooke asked him aboutwhether you're staying or not and all that
stuff. Here's the thing, theresponsibility that comes with being a head coach
and getting four million dollars a year, four million dollars a year, and
(26:36):
being worth over one hundred million dollarsthat the Pittsburgh Steelers have paid you over
the last seventeen years, you havea fiduciary responsibility to answer that question.
Now, if this had been aone off by Tomlin throwing a hissy fit,
letting his ego massive ego lead thecharge, it might be understandable.
(27:02):
But as Mike Tomlin developed into hisposition here in Pittsburgh, he grew more
arrogant in how he treated the media, me included. He got more arrogant
how he dealt with fans. You'veall seen it if you haven't googled it
on YouTube. It comes up himscreaming and expurlative that I won't use here
(27:23):
at a loving, adoring Steelers fanwho at halftime said, go coach,
and Tomlin had well, no classat all. I'm dealing with the guy,
you know, Mike Tomlin leads withhis ego. He ain't well,
how do I say this? RockyMarciana was fifty two to zero as heavyweight
(27:44):
champion of the world, recognized asthe greatest heavyweight champion of the world,
and he was humble during that wholetime. Humility is not in Mike Tomlin's
wheelhouse. If anything, I thinkhe might be a little delusion and think
that he created the Steeler mystique, that he created this Steeler way for him
(28:10):
to walk off the stage last nightnot answering Brooks question was unacceptable for four
million dollars. If you did thatto me and you were giving me four
million, I'd say, well,Brooke, I appreciated it, But this
probably isn't a time and place becauseI'm really focused on the loss that we
just went through. That's class, that's four million dollars. That's the way
(28:32):
you're supposed to act. Act likeyou've been there before. Act like you've
been there before. Act like you'vebeen there before. Unfortunately, with Mike
Tomlin, this act that we seefrom him, disrespecting all involved, makes
you wonder if he will be theSteelers head coach in twenty twenty four.
(28:56):
Come see us at Shooters. HelloUp, Steelers Nation. It's Tank and
Mike for Steelers chock talk. Youknow what you normally see the Chiefs statue
behind us, Mike. Oh,you see the Rocky Blyier memorial over there
at Franco Harrison Memorial. It's freakingcold here in Pittsburgh. Benson, you're
cold. No, it's way toocold, and that's why you chose a
(29:17):
golf thing that's trying to warm youup a little bit. Just don't visually
warm you up. We'll see,Mike. It's an analogy because you know
this as well. When the season'sdone, the boys go golfing, and
unfortunately, eure Pittsburgh Steelers are goinggolfer. So the news came out just
a little while ago coach Mike Tomlinwill be back for his eighteenth season with
(29:40):
your Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm not goingto tear into coach Tomlin, but it
has been quite apparent this he isgood at evaluating talent. Lens. He
has brought you some guys along theway along with the Steelers scouting department,
the scouting department hanging your hat ona scouting department and Andy Widel, who
will talk a second, They've donea good job of valuating talent. TJ.
(30:04):
Watt. It goes on. AlejandroVillanueva made a player out of him.
Here's the thing, though, weobviously all can see that coach Tomlin
is not good at evaluating coaches.Well, you know, so what your
coach, So what you're saying startingwith Todd Haley, Randy Fietner, Matt
(30:26):
Canada, the current offensive line coach, firing Dick Lebau who to hell fires
Dick lebo one of the greatest defensivemining and Bruce Savins as well. But
to bring his buddy point is iscoach Tomlin is one of the I will
say he's one of the all timegreat leader of men. He is a

(31:08):
He can get the team fired up. He is a good defensive mind.
He needs to really rely on,probably his GM coming in and bringing in
Dan Andy Widel and bringing in thisnew offensive coordinator, in overhauling the entire
offense. You bring in the OClet the OC bring in his guys,
(31:30):
and you know it's okay. Imean, you're the head coach. Can
you can have a little bit.Yeah, Hey, we're gonna go for
it on fourth down. You gottwo downs here on third down. But
it's okay to let go and letthe offense do the thing of going to
this. Mike Tomlin's a good headcoach. He can motivate people, but
it is obvious he's not good atevaluating coaches. Coaches on their arc Now
(31:56):
of the offensive line, you've certainlyheard me raving for a couple of years
now. It's obvious that coach Tomlindoesn't know anything about offensive line play.
He just doesn't because the glaring mistakeswith this offensive line are apparent to somebody
like me who does know a littlelittle bit about offensive play. I've spoken
(32:20):
with Russ Grimm, I've spoken withsome other NFL guys. The current offensive
line coach, nice guy, buthe's got to go, Mike. They're
fundamentals well, they they improved thelea he did because there were good athletes
Proderick Jones, for example. Butthe point there is coach Tomlin should be
able to look at tape and saythis is what my offensive line's doing wrong,
(32:43):
And I'll tell you some of thethings are doing wrong. For example,
Proderick Jones got swam swam. Itwasn't even a real swim move by
the Buffalo Bills player. Why hewas standing too tall, He didn't move
his feet, he didn't attack thecenter of the body. These are basic
fundamentals. When you see the PittsburghSteelers guards tackles, even sometimes center's pulling
(33:07):
anymore. You see like a bigbody move like this. The offensive line
play is predicated a lot on physics. You got to throw that elbow like
that to get turned and get downfield. They don't do that, Mike,
they don't. It is Joe Mooretaught me that at pitt The Joe Moore
(33:28):
Award goes to the greatest talking tolittle details. But details have cost this
team. Details have cost this teamgoing to super Bowl. You're talking about
it. You need again, Soget me a coast, Get me an
offensive coordinator that knows what the hellhe's doing, not jet sweeps like Matt
Canada, Todd Haley's ego. Leadin the way, Get coach Tomlin out
(33:52):
of the way, let omar andlet Andy Widel a really smart offensive and
defensive mind. Football mind. Getthe coaching staff they need defense. Well
it starts with the OC though,So you know, Butler would have never
been Sorry to say this, Butlerwould have never been a defensive coordinator for
any other team. But he waslike Tomlin's best friend. Well, and
(34:15):
that's the thing, and that's andand you can't blame him for that.
But that's where UH coach Tomlin's loyaltyto his past coaches that have helped him
get to where he's at. Look, I love you very much, but
if you're messing up my football teamat quarterback, I love you like a
brother. If I ever worked myway and get to a certain spot,
(34:37):
I'm not going to just bring youon as an assistant just because you know
I'm loyalty you. Listen, hecan bring him on as an assistant,
but that doesn't mean he needs thetitle of defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator with
you know, with Randy Fickner beinga former coach of his and UH and
Butler being a former coach of hisas well, I'm not saying those guys
(34:57):
aren't good guys and not saying listen, they CoA. Yes, they worked
their way up as well. However, the NFL is different, is a
different game than the college game. It's just it just completely is. Uh.
You have to allow the playmakers tomake plays. However, you do
have to help the positions that taketime to a little bit develop a little
bit more. Oh line, Yeah, it takes you know. You can
(35:19):
get in there and block, butthe details matter. So when you hire
that a munch was Mike straight downthe middle. It went straight down the
middle. Then it started to justwe we've been. That's when mcat they
(35:44):
love come see us at shooters.Hey, huddle up, Steelers Nation is
Tank and Mike for Steelers chalk talk. You know, Mike is negative twelve
today and I called Mike, Ishit, my totchies are gonna freeze if
(36:04):
we go down to the river insteadwhere it's shooters. Up here in the
North Hills, Wexford beautiful if you'rea golf fanatic or a lover of great
food. I just had the bluecheeseburger. Do you see that? Of
course you got any on there?Yeah you do? Yeah, I did,
well, I want to eat itlater where it's shooters. The good
folks here at Shooters Indoor Driving Range. Awesome place to come our new home
(36:27):
during the winter months to talk aboutyour Steelers and all things Steelers Chalk Talk.
Come. If you haven't been toShooters, you gotta cut you're a
golfer, you like it? Well, No, you got indoor outdoor.
They got the heaters, and inthose heaters when they get them going,
it's cocing, so you are warm. You're not that cold outside. But
they also have the indoor simulator aswell, and then obviously a bunch of
TVs for game days Saturday Sunday isanything you want to watch? Yeah,
(36:51):
and the foods obviously, the NFLPlayoffs coming up, and then sure enough
eventually you'll start getting some March madness, so this is probably the place to
be. I got, yeah,January madness going on. So thank you
Shooters for having the Steelers Chalks Talkshow with Tank and Mike here. So
let's now huddle it up and talksome Steelers. The thing I would like
(37:12):
to see coach Tomlin allow the offenseto do that, and maybe not so
much him pick the oc but maybeyou know an outside source. You know,
really, Hey, this is whatwe want to get back to.
We want to get back to Steelerfootball. I want to take the pressure
off of the quarterback. We donot have Ben Roethlisberger, who is a
you know, a pro bowler, future Hall of Famer. We have Kenny
(37:34):
Pickett. Now he's still developing.Okay, is he done. No,
Mason Rudolph, he was done threeyears ago when he came in and replaced
Roethlisberger with some injuries and stuff. But now it takes time to progress quarterbacks.
It takes time to mature. Play, get beat up a little bit,
come back out, watch from thesideline, learn, let them.
They talk about the speed of thegame, it's not so much the player's
(37:57):
speed, it's the processing of informationin that system, realizing a defense and
understanding, all right, with thisdefense, where is the best place to
go with the football. That's what'sgoing on with Kenny Pickett. That's why
he started to struggle a little bit. It's a little bit of a sophomore
slump. There's a book out ofhim. Defensive coordinators now have a pro
(38:20):
scouting report on him where they cankind of attack him a little bit better.
And that's kind of what happened thisyear. Mason Ruoff had some success.
Now is he the answer? Idon't know. Gave us a Christmas
present. I was at that game. It was beautiful. But my point
is is the quarterback position takes time. But you got to have an oc
come in and you got to committo him, and you got to commit
(38:42):
to his system for the next fouror five years if you want Pickett to
develop, because changing systems over andover and over is not helping his development.
And that's what you get. Youknow, look at look at the
blueprint. One of the best blueprintsout there is what the Packers did far
to Rogers and then Rogers to nowthat transition between McCarthy and Lafloor, Rogers
(39:04):
was still the guy, and itwasn't until love was underneath the Floor's system
a little bit watching Rogers did heget a chance to come in and play.
And he played great and he obviouslyhad a great playoff game and they're
still in it. So my pointis is you got to get a guy
that has a system that is quarterbackfriendly, that can kind of take things
off, you know, take thingsoff of his shoulders a little bit,
(39:27):
put it more on naugy hairs, put more on the old line, get
that play action pass friar move shouldbe more and then and then rely on
use Austin. You don't need togo shoot out. Can he Pickett is
not Patrick Mahomes and he's not andhe's not Josh Allen And then you look
at yeah, can he do that? Possibly? But someone's got to it,
(39:52):
you know, with the receivers here, Someone's got to sit down and
talk to the receivers and say, this is football. This is a team
game. Listen. I get you'regonna make the business decisions here and there,
but when your guys putting his button the line, you should be
fighting your butt off for him.You want to make a business decision,
run out of balance instead of gettingtackled. But when it comes to making
(40:12):
a block, you got to makethat block. Ain't no Iron team,
Ain't. That is the most paramountthing that I took away. And it
sounds like Mike as well today fromMike Tomlin's press conference. He will be
back for his eighteenth year with yourPittsburgh Steelers. And I'll leave this segment
with this, and I've said thissince the beginning of the year. The
(40:36):
offensive talent with Naugy Warren friar MouthPickens, even though he's a little crazy,
Deontae and Austin. Austin, thatguy, that guy is he's gonna
emerge next year one of the guysget a good offensive coordin. Yeah,
and that's the thing you got togo you get you go out and get
the OC. Now, when youget the OC, he comes in,
(40:58):
picks his O line coach, hepicks his quarterback coach, he picks his
running back, his received it.He picks all of his coaches. And
then he's got to be comfortable withthe quarterback position. Is he comfortable?
Okay, Yeah, I'm comfortable withKenny Pickett. I want to develop him.
Is he comfortable with Mason Rudolph beingthe starter? Is he comfortable with
Kenny Pickett competing for that starting job? Or do they say, hey,
(41:22):
let's go out and get a guylike a Kirk Cousins or maybe another like
a Joe Flacco. Let's steal him, because the Browns still have Deshaun Watson.
So let's go steal Joe Flacco andlet's get him for his last year
or two and see if Picket canlearn something from him and then go forward
with a good offensive coordinator's got toknow a good quarterback. Well, he's
(41:44):
gonna one a guy that kind ofknows his system already. That's typically the
way it goes. All right, absolutely, all right, it's Tank and
Mike for Steelers chalk Talk. Rememberlike our brand news Stealers chalk Talk dot
com, Stealers chalk Talk dot comwebsite. There it is right there,
Come see us the shooters. Allright, huddle up, Steelers Nation.
(42:15):
It's Tank for Steelers chalk Talk.On a cold blustery day after the defeat
to the Buffalo Bills, you know, there's a lot of well question if
Mike Tomlin will be forced to leave, whether he will be traded, whether
he will leave on his own.I personally think Tomlin's time has passed.
I'm not going to go into thewhys of it, but I think for
(42:36):
eighty percent of us in Steelers Nation, it's quite clear that his time has
passed. The man behind me isbeing quickly recognized as the greatest coach in
college history. Fairmont West Virginia's ownNick Sabin. The Steelers and Aren't Rooney
need to hire Sabin immediately? Thisweek, look, Nick Saban openly admitted
(42:59):
he didn't retire because he didn't lovethe game anymore. He didn't retire because
he doesn't love Alabama football culture. He didn't retire because the game has passed
him by. He was in thebattle to fight for another national championship.
Nick Saban has retired because he's donewith the bs that the NCAA has let
(43:22):
out of the Pandora's box with anilagreement, and well, the portal the
portal Tank's opinion, you get oneportal change. That's it, Cupcake.
You don't get to bounce around likesome ridlin kid, high school kid that
doesn't know what he wants. Anyway, that's not the point. The point
(43:43):
is one of the best American footballcoaches on the planet is now available in
Nick Saban. If you get Sabanhere, you get a known commodity.
And I don't want to hear aboutthe failed experiment with the Dolphins. Okay,
everybody matures professionally, hopefully if you'reany damn good. Okay, everybody
(44:07):
gets better at what they do.Look at Bill Belichick. He didn't do
well with the Browns his first timearound, but with the Patriots. Need
I say more? Steelers Nation? So look, I'm adamant about this.
It's time to move on from MikeTomlin. It is time to get a
(44:28):
man who understands something about winning.I heard a recent quote from coach Saban
and it went like this. Youknow, losers don't mind being around other
losers, but winners they don't likebeing around losers because they have a goal
to set. They're on a mission. So I'm adamatd about this. Higher
(44:51):
Nick Saban this week. Just AsknajiHarris or Minka Fitzpatrick or any of the
Alabama players that have gone on toplay in the NFL if they think he
could turn Steelers Nation around immediately.I know he could because the same principles
that made him a winner at Alabamahe will implement in Pittsburgh. Now,
(45:13):
you need a couple well assistant coachesthat are Steelers in bleed black and goal.
James Harrison's your linebacker coach. Bringback Dick Lebau, one of the
greatest defensive minds ever. Mike Tomlanthrew him out with a garbage Get Brett
keesl in here. Joe Green isan advisory position to do some defensive line
(45:35):
coaching. Troy Paula Malo might wantto get into some coaching toour Rod Woodson.
So the point is, Nick Saban, Pittsburgh should be you'll next head
coach. Huddle up, Steelers Nation. It's tank for Steelers jock talk.
I'm hunkered down because it's a cold, nasty and the hangover from that Bells
(45:58):
games has got me hunker down thismorning. The old quarterback Mike Mcmahonuel,
he's up in the North hill's cryingon his terrible towel, but he does
have his lions to look forward to. You know, I just want to
get into a couple of things realquick. Appreciate all you guys that follow
Steelers chalk talk, whether you're listeningon Fox Sports, Wheeling Pittsburgh Radio Saturday
(46:21):
mornings or watching our YouTube clips throughoutthe year. I want to say something.
I'm not going to speculate why MikeTomlin walked off the stage last night
when Brooke asked him about whether you'restaying or not and all that stuff.
Here's the thing. The responsibility thatcomes with being a head coach and getting
(46:43):
four million dollars a year, fourmillion dollars a year and being worth over
one hundred million dollars that the PittsburghSteelers have paid you over the last seventeen
years. You have a fiduciary responsibilityto answer that question. Now, if
this had been a one off byTomlin throwing a hissy fit, letting his
(47:07):
ego massive ego lead the charge,it might be understandable. But as Mike
Tomlin developed into his position here inPittsburgh, he grew more arrogant in how
he treated the media, me included. He got more arrogant how he dealt
with fans. You've all seen it, if you haven't googled it on YouTube.
(47:30):
It comes up him screaming and expurlativethat I won't use here at a
loving, adoring Steelers fan who athalftime said, go coach, and Tomlin
had well, no class at all. I'm dealing with the guy, you
know, Mike Tomlin leads with hisego. He ain't well, how do
(47:52):
I say this? Rocky Marciana wasfifty two to zero as heavyweight champion of
the world, recognized as the greatestheavyweight champion in the world, and he
was humble during that whole time.Humility is not in Mike Tomlin's wheelhouse.
If anything, I think he mightbe a little delusional and think that he
(48:14):
created the Steeler mystique, that hecreated this Steeler way. For him to
walk off the stage last night, not answering Brooks question was unacceptable for four
million dollars. If you did thatto me and you were giving me four
million, I'd say, well,Brooke, I appreciated it, but this
(48:34):
probably isn't a time and place becauseI'm really focused on the loss that we
just went through. That's class, that's four million dollars. That's the way
you're supposed to act. Act likeyou've been there before. Act like you've
been there before. Act like you'vebeen there before. Unfortunately, with Mike
Tomlin, this act that we seefrom him, disrespecting all involved, makes
(48:59):
you want wonder if he will bethe Steelers head coach in twenty twenty four.
Or straight down the middle. Itwent straight down the middle. Then
it started to book, just weweep it. That's when my caddy lost
(49:22):
sight of it. That little whitepellet has never been found to this day.
But it went straight down the middle, like whacked down the fairway.
(49:42):
It went smack down the fairway. Then it started to slice, just snitch
off line. It headed for twobut it bout stuck down my caddy say,
as long as you're still in thestate, you're okay. Pause.
It went straight down the middle, five away. The sun was never broder,
(50:10):
the Greek where never a Greek, and I was never kinger. Today
I heard it down the fuddle. It went down the middle.
