Speaker 1 (00:00):
Before we get the episode started. I don't I don't
think this is news, but I'm considering something. It's not
official yet, but it's pretty damn close. It might happen.
I might be getting a dog.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Oh yeah, he was talking about this off the mic. Yeah,
you got a dog in mind.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
I was, I'm gonna do a rescue, you know, for you.
Well also it's it's you know, shouts out Buggie. It
was always like an advocate for that.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It was.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
And when the thought in my head was to get
a dog, the first thing that came to mind.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
My mind was to rescue one.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
So it's still it's still in the process of me
trying to find one because I want to find one
that fits my personality.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
It has to be calm.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
It has to not be barking all the time. No,
not no, man. My sister has one and.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
He the most popular dog.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
He whiles out, there's there's one I saw, No see
that those bark a lot, But there's one.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
There's like this pit mix at the rescue that I.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Saw, and that it would be that kind of dog
where it's just calm.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
They just lay there. Man, you got to get a
laboratory triet or something.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, why why those are like good dogs, Like they're
just they're super chill, they're good family dogs. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
A lot of hair though, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
That is the only thing about them. See then that
they're bigger, that would cause me anxiety.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I've been around pities, you know, this past year, so
I'm familiar with that breed. Especially this one's more medium sized,
so it'll fit like my small apartment. But like I said,
it's still it's it would be my first time owning
a dog by myself.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I'm gonna tell you this, Pits they're not like the
easiest dogs. They're not. They're they got a lot of energy.
But I mean, if you want to try good like
yourself out.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, I'm that's why I'm I gotta do my research.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I think it's like when you go you got to connect.
You gotta feel that connection with that dog. You go
down to the facility and you're just kind of walking
around petting the dogs, and that one is just gonna
connect with you. I think you'll just feel it.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Do you either of you guys? Have I do? I
have a dog. He's actually a pit mixed pit and uh,
what's the other part of them? Golly, I can't think
right now. But are you the full? Are you taking
care of it?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, okay. I've had him since he was a puppy,
since he was what, uh, three months? I think it
was three months, But I've had him. He's what he's
going to be. Actually, his birthday's coming up in January.
He's going to be four.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
So Straws lives near near me. We live in downtown.
If I need a dog sitter.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
You damn I am not. No eating dogs around here,
no eating dogs?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Is that the Trump thing? The Trump They're eating dogs Minnesota?
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Colorado?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
I mean Jizo.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
You know you've known me, yeah, twenty plus years. Do
you think a dog would be good for me? Do
you think I'll be able to take care of it?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
I don't know. I don't know. You're like not home
that often?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Lay, I'm taking all this in consideration.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
By what That's the only thing that I would say
is that you're not really home often and there's no
one there when you're not there, you know what I'm saying.
So what are you going to be locking them up
all the time? So are you going for a boy
or a girl?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I don't know for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
They got to be spading, aren't they won their rescues.
They Okay, that's good. That's good I think for you.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Wait, I'm familiar with like I've had friends where they
own dogs and they just leave them for hours and.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, you can. I wouldn't say a pit because they
get very very uh, their anxiety goes up.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, there's certain dogs that they almost need that company
all the time and if they don't, they're just gonna
like go crazy. So that is that's a good point.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Let me ask you this.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
The shelter did offer me a foster where I could
foster it for a couple of days to see how
it goes.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Would you guys recommend that. Yeah, that's good. That's a
good just to see. If you're like to jump into it,
like completely into it. You gotta get them crate trained
because that's going to teach him no, don't go you know,
don't use bathroom inside the crate went to your outside.
It'll help with their temperament. So that's definitely something to
look just for me.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
I mean, I understand what Jesus was saying about my schedule,
but I don't know. I just feel like it's something
I need in my life right now. I live by
myself and I've had dogs my dad's dogs in the past,
so I'm familiar with having dogs, but this would be
my first, like by myself.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
This is a commitment.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, man, but that's a little thing that I've been
thinking about doing, and I might be doing it a cat.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
I'm allergic. I'm allergic.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
How you allergic to a cat but not a dog? Yeah,
Like I was allergic like that too growing up. But
it was just like all for.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
I break out, like my whole body will break out.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
In interesting Yeah, yeah, all right, wish me look.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
But like I said, it's not for sure, but I'm
I don't know. I'm really thinking about it seriously.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
All right, Okay, this could give me for our podcast.
What up? I'm gizo. That is John Magic and we
are back.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
You heard an extra voice on our beginning the pre show.
He's been a guest in here before. He's one of
one of my good friends. DJ's in town. Like I said,
he's been on the episode. Look for his episode. DJ Straws.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Yeah. Yeah, the first episode, we was trying to just
getting to know Straw's well, I mean, we know Straws,
but we were trying to get his story out there.
But now he's back for like a part two.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Well, here's the reason why I asked him to come
do this episode is Straw's and I DJ on Mondays
at Lucy's Lounge. This R and B night that we've created.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, how like this what this is gonna be? Two years? Yeah,
two years already coming up.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Two years and it's just easy, man, just remembering how
it all started to how it's been now.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
People know about out it. Man, it's a thing on
Monday and stuff like it now too. I'm like, wait a.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Minute, Oh, who you want to put it out there?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
No?
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah, but I mean we add the live instruments to it,
where Marcus plays the piano, Bobby sometimes comes in and
plays the guitar.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
No one's doing that. We had a saxophone. Yeah, I
think a guy came and played the harmonica one time.
That was like in the very very very beginning. The
harmonica guy came and I haven't seen him. Oh that's right,
And I remember that. It was actually pretty dope. I
liked it. I mean, but yeah, we have a lot
of special guests. Every once in a while, we have
We've actually had an artists come through and sing. Yeah,
record reps, bring some artists through and then they've came.
(06:39):
It was a great night with him.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
So yeah, yeah, Lucy's Lounge on Mondays and it's only
from seven to eleven ish, seven to eleven ish, So yeah,
if you guys want to come hang out with us
on Mondays. No, But so, I I was with you
on this past Monday and out of nowhere, you're all.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
What you say, You're like, I hate requests, hate requests, man, stop.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
And you were you were like really passionate about it.
And I know it's a subject that we've talked about
before in past episodes, but I.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Think it's a subject that DJ has always talk about.
I mean, it's just like a thing. Are you getting
like more than usual now? Or is it annoying?
Speaker 3 (07:20):
It's more annoying?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Yeah? Why?
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Oh man, I don't even know why. But it seems
like a thing to just ask the DJ to play whatever.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Which it's been a norm for yeah, our lifetime.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Of DJing, But has it gotten more with like the
new generations?
Speaker 3 (07:36):
The phones?
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah, yeah, the.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Phones with the request that they typed out. Did did
a certain something happen where you got put you over
the top?
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, actually yes. Actually I'm not going to say what
club it was, but it was recently, probably about I
want to say, about six or seven months ago. I
was eating the club and I just got fed up.
It was about ten thirty, I mean, we just opened
thirty minutes ago, and say, hey, can you play this?
Can you play this? Can you play this? Can you
play this? I'm like, all right, look, I stopped the
music now, well the music in the middle of the club.
(08:10):
But like, listen, you guys just got here. I guarantee
that I'm gonna play whatever you're gonna be asking for
in the next maybe fifteen twenty minutes. Just give yourself
some time, man.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Just yeah. So it's a long night. Like, oh, it's
the worst.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
I mean, I think it's because, you know, they they
come in thinking like, oh, the club is about me
and all that kind of stuff. No, it's not about
you particularly. We're glad you're here to have fun, but
it's for everybody. Man, We're out here trying to have
a good time with everybody. It's not about you. And yeah,
so I got on the mic. I was like, listen, listen,
I'm not gonna play anything else that you guys asked
(08:45):
for this whole night and I didn't get one more request.
It was the best worst night of my life.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
I mean as DJ's like I said, we've dealt with
it through our lifetime of DJing that we have our
ways of here's mine.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Okay, I just say okay to everything, and.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Is eventually gonna play probably.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Well two things.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
It'll eventually play probably, or if it doesn't play, they will.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
It's it's not gonna change how they It's a.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Small percentage, but a percentage will won't even remember they
asked for it because they were just having a good time. Regardless,
there is a little percentage of people that come up
like you didn't play very quest like oh, and then
you just say, sorry.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
What are they going to do?
Speaker 3 (09:29):
We're about to leave, bye?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Can you play my song before we leave? Let's just yes,
how about you leave and then you just play that
song yourself.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Let's do some classic scenarios, the one that you just
brought up.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
People just got there.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Let's say the doors just open at nine thirty, ten o'clock,
they get there at ten oh five, and they ask
for the hottest song out.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Is that to me? Is that just like not common sense?
Obviously on our end, we understand the formula, but for
like the general public, is that just not common sense
that Yo, later on in the night, when more people
are here and it's the club is jumping, that's when
the hot shit's gonna play. Like, that's not common sense.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
I think.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
I think that's the thing with the public is there's
so many podcast episodes about this subject, but the club
goers will never hear it. Yeah, this is not it's
not a subject they'll understand. So it's always gonna happen.
So to answer your question, yeah, it's it's not common.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
I mean, but I feel like it's common sense when
when people go to like a concert, right, like you know,
you're not gonna hear the hottest song like as the
first song. So why can't you just take that same
mentality going to a club.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
I think it's because they're driving up and they're listening
to all this music, so they're thinking that their club
is in the car at first. Yeah, so they're just
gonna bring that.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Into it's just gonna like translate it.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
I mean, it's it's annoying because it's like, Yo, we're
not in your car. For one, we're not in your playlist,
not have the same We're gonna play the songs that
you guys want to hear. I mean, it's it's how
we get our jobs, just how we get paid.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
So well, also if we're if we're not gonna play
the songs. To me, going to clubs should be about
who you're with. I think, yes, the music will add
experience and hopefully you go to a club where the
DJ knows how to create this amazing experience, but just
enjoy the company you're with. Yeah, I think that's what
(11:21):
the public should concentrate on. These people asking for requests
over and over, like yo, like, just enjoy your friends.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Yeah, just have some fun, go get a drinks.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
I mean, but what about the people that are really
there to try to dance, like girls specifically, like they
really just do want to hear music and dance.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
What about for that crowd, We're gonna play that music.
I mean, that's the simple and easiest way to explain it.
We're gonna play the music that you're gonna dance to.
I guarantee it. Every time we're gonna play what you
want to hear. You just have to give us time
to get there, because obviously they don't know how we
set up our nights. We want to play the hottest
stuff at the peak times, and the peak times or
later midnight twelve thirty one o'clock that's our peak times.
(12:00):
That's when we're playing all the hottest stuff. So we're
only playing like filler music in the beginning because nine
times out of ten, there's not too many people there.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Do you ever do this? Do you ever try to
educate them?
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Ask your DJ? Yeh, I shut off the music and
I said, I don't do that.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Well, you got to struggle it to you, he's not
breaking points, so that's why he's doing it, you know
what I mean.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
I'm getting older. I'm just not patient anymore. I'm like, listen,
I'm not gonna know. Yeah. I try to educate people
as best I can.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Yes, to me, it has to be an energy. If
they're rude about it, I just say yes, like yes.
But if the energy is cool, if they're cool, I'll
let them know like hey, it's still early.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Like trust me, I'm.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Gonna play this song and I tell them the reason
why I'm saving it. Oh, because that's what they'll ask,
how come you can't play it now? I'll be like
because at eleven thirty twelve o'clock, everyone's gonna want to
hear that song, so just hang time.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
It's also a thing we don't like to repeat music, like,
we don't like to play the song over again.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Side note, I've talked about this in the past. I
don't mind that anymore either.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I mean, yeah, if you play it like way early,
but if you play it like yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
You're not gonna play it within the same hour. But
what were some of the other scenarios you were talking about.
There's the people to say, hey, I need to leave,
can you play this song?
Speaker 1 (13:13):
I was just gonna say that, Like if you're gonna
say I'm gonna leave, then like bye. And also okay, good,
you'll get to hear that song in your car, like go.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
It up right now.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
That's not a jukebox, man, We're not a jukebox. We
actually have, you know, things that we like to hear too, So.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
I think sometimes people forget it's also supposed to be
for the masses. You know what I'm saying. You're playing
for the masses, not for specific people.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Another scenario is knowing well, sometimes they won't know the
night they're going into because let's do it mondays. For example,
it's an R and B so funk like good music night.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
And you're not gonna hear a turn up song right
and nobody's talking.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
So people will get mad that, hey, how come you're
not playing Little John.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Right ying Yang twins. I'm like what what?
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Yeah? And then you tell them like, yo, can't you
see can't you feel.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
The energy of the night? Yea? Oh man?
Speaker 1 (14:08):
But that's another scenario again, I'm not you know, Oh, how.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
About when they asked for it, but then no one's
dancing like they beg you for the song, and then
you finally play and they're just chowing over there in
the corner like yeah, grateful, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
I'm playing this for you. And nine times out of ten,
it's one of those songs that nobody's gonna dance. Only
them would dance to it, but they still don't dance
to it. And it's one of those songs that's gonna
kill your club, like it's gonna kleill the vibe, and
it's just like how about the ones where.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
You know I'll use this as an example because it's
it's happened recently. A group of Indian guys will come
up with their phone and show me a song that,
you know, asking if I could play it, And it's
a song that I've never heard of ever in life,
but it's only like for them, Yeah, and they don't
(15:00):
understand that, Like, you know, there's like hundreds of people
in front of me.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
And there's three of you guys, like.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
They're not gonna know this song. And and yeah, they
try to give you money, but I'm like, I don't
know this.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
I don't give me money. I'm not gonna play it.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Okay, let's talk about that for a second. How much
money does it cost for you to actually play that song?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (15:22):
I in my head, I just kid. Yeah, So if
it's like a random song.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
This is a wild thing.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I don't know if I should even say this, because well,
the clubgoers are probably not listening, but sometimes they'll they'll
pay me twenty bucks to play a song that I
was gonna play anyways. Yeah, but I just say, I
just say, yeah, yeah, I got you.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
I was gonna play it anyways how soon, depending on
the time, but the amount.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
But I've gotten paid one hundred.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yeah, you play it right then and there?
Speaker 1 (15:57):
That wouldn't You'll get and again it's a song that
I was eventually play. Anyways, you're not going to say that,
but one hundred it'll be the next it'll be the
next ten to fifteen minutes I got Yeah, yeah for sure.
But I think the most I've gotten tipped for a
song was three hundred bucks.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
No ship. Do you remember the song?
Speaker 3 (16:13):
It was an Indian song. Actually think about it.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
It was.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Everybody has that, but everyone has that one, but he
has it.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Yes, I'm like cool, but it was easy.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
The scenario I was talking about was nobody had it. No,
it was like an artist from India, like I have
no idea what this song is.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
What's his name mus Swallow or something like No, not
p it's uh, there's a big artist that they all know.
I can't think of his name. I think it's mo
Swallow or Moosala something like that. But he's huge. He's
dead real quick.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Since we're in this in this subject, you know, it's
always wild to me is let's let's do the Punjabi MC,
which is the.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Easy club that hit that when you could play songs.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
Yeah for sure.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
I love the energy that Yeah, they start dancing. Yeah, okay,
so the people that requested you play it, they go
wi they go wild because the song's playing, they're dancing,
and us DJs will blend into a back to another
hip hop song with the same bpm. Yeah, so you
know it blends energy and the energy is the same
(17:20):
in my head. Why don't you just have that energy
with any song? Fun? Yeah, have fun, like how you
were having fun with this song? Yeah, but just do
that through every song.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
And then it's like they want to continue down that
path of like especially that the Indian culture. They want
to continue down, like deeper into Indian music. Once you
get into like once you start to play that song,
they want to keep going, like play some more, play
some more, play some more.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
I'm like, by the way, have you ever I recently
got to witness because there was a private party before
I DJ, and it was an all Indian party.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Man, it was energy. Their weddings crazy.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
I mean, as DJs, we want to be prepared. So
you know, I wanted to talk to the DJ and
be like, Yo, give me a couple of songs because
I've never heard these before.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Changed contact with people all the time, doing that type
of stuff, because I mean, it obviously broadens your horizon,
broaden your perspective and it broadens your library.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
So you ever get someone to threaten you for not
playing their song?
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Oh I think I have. I just man, I have.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
I'm trying to remember the situation.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Oh yeah, because I've they've I've gotten the like you suck,
Like they'll yell it.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Just for not playing their song. Yeah, but like the
club is jumping, like.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Yeah, you're the only one not having fun. You don't
see these hundreds of people out here dancing and having
a fun time and you're over here mad.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Shoot, but I suck?
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Okay, Yeah, I mean for the I mean for the
bigger picture. I don't mind request because here's like I said,
I have my ways of just diffusing it anyways, and
just you know, they'll go away if you just say okay.
And like I said, if you don't play it, oh well,
like what's gonna happen?
Speaker 3 (19:07):
I mean there's certain times where I do like requests,
like I don't know what I'm going into, like a
crazy night, like or just something that I've never done,
Like I don't know a lot of country music. So
I'll welcome stuff like that because it's helping me out
for the night. But if it's something that we do consistently.
We got this, we got this.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
But I was just gonna say, that's exactly what I
was gonna say, is request. When when people come up
with request, I'll write it down and then for the
next night, I'll play it. And there's been many songs
that I did I've never heard of, I didn't know,
but I'll check it out and then I'll play the
next week and it's going to be part of my rotation.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
So that's happening.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
I appreciate these requests.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Because it's the streets talking.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Yeah, I would have not ever known about it. And
sometimes I'll tell them that and percent of the time
they take it well, where I say, what's like, what's
the spelling of that song?
Speaker 3 (20:03):
Again? What is it?
Speaker 1 (20:05):
I'm gonna download, download it for next time, and they're like, okay, cool.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
So what's what's more annoying than requesting a song that
it's a hot record that you know you're eventually gonna play,
or someone requesting a random song for me?
Speaker 3 (20:18):
I think it's the one that we already know we're
gonna play this, okay. I think that's the most annoying.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Because it's just obvious.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Obviously we're gonna come play this where that's why they
hire us.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Just play that, play the hits. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
I told this story before. It's in one of the
podcast episodes, but I'll retell it. I was at one
of the nightclubs and it was just this one guy
by himself, not dancing with anyone. He would put up
a request and I don't know if I played it
or not, but he was doing the phone thing. He
was pulling up a phone. You can see what he wrote,
but just let me know if you remember this story.
(20:50):
Like throughout my set he kept saying different things, not
even request that was a bad blend. Well then he goes,
why did you pick that song?
Speaker 3 (21:01):
He was talking to me, so I stopped.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
I did this, bro, go enjoy yourself.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
I stopped the music, and I was like, are you
just gonna stand there and like give me messages?
Speaker 3 (21:11):
And everyone's all looking at him. You can come talk
to me. Let's just do that. Let's get it out
of the way, let's get your gripes out now.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
But I mean towards the end of the night sometimes
the club tells you, like, hey, start playing this stuff.
I've got people have gotten mad, like, yo, why are
you playing this.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Like, hey man, they paid the bills, Yeah, they pay us.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
People still do the flash drive thing like, yall, I
got the song on the flash.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Happened to me last week. That's very common, very common.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
It be their own records or yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
And you know what's wild that they they'll say like
a thousand bucks and I'm like.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
I can't. I can't take that chance.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
I can't because then you're gonna start having more people
do it and think it's okay.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Side note, obviously we don't know what the song is,
but with DJing for years and years, I could almost
is guaranteed the crowd will just like get up and
like stop dancing, and they're gonna get a reality check.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
So maybe we should do it one day and be like,
this is what your song?
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Everyone just left, like did you see what?
Speaker 2 (22:12):
We had?
Speaker 3 (22:13):
People here, but they're gone now because you yeah, because
you're a song.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Yeah, so yeah, I'm I'm okay with requests, but you're
you're an I'm.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Okay to an extent, But once you start getting real pushy,
especially the drunk ones they're the worst, and they come
out start spilling stuff. Oh man, has that happened to you? You
got stuff spilled on you.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Yeah, and I've spilled spilled some on friends computers.
Speaker 3 (22:39):
Selling stuff.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Mine was like the New Year's Eve a few years ago.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Are you sure it wasn't your birthday? No?
Speaker 1 (22:48):
They did that bodily sprayed the all over my computer.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Who that deal was that? Like, we're just gonna spray
champagne in the club. I mean it's cool if you know,
in the music video, but in the club. Whose idea
was that?
Speaker 1 (23:01):
I I think if we would give uh, you know,
like clubgoers advice advice? Yeah, what would you give club goers?
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Like?
Speaker 3 (23:12):
What would you tell them.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
As far as requests?
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Yeah, or just yeah, the club going experience? Yeah, how
to just have our perspective? Sheesh, we're gonna play the music,
enjoy yourself. I think I agree with that. You can
be on your phone all all you want, Instagram, you know, Snapchat,
all that stuff. We're gonna, you know, we're gonna make
sure you're gonna have a good time. Don't get to
(23:36):
what can I say, don't get to set in your
ways where you're only gonna dance if you hear one
specific song. Yeah, if you're only gonna be there for.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
The club may not be for you. If that's your mindset,
you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Like, know where you're at. If you're coming into a
hip hop night, don't expect a whole bunch of Spanish music,
or if you're coming into a Spanish night, don't expect
a whole bunch of you know, off the wall other stuff.
Just basically know where you're at and just expect that.
I mean, that's probably like the best I can say.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Yeah, I mean, if you're a regular clubgoer at a
certain spot, more than likely they know what to expect.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
But I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
If it's your first time and kind of feel out
the night first and like, oh it's that kind of night,
then there's I mean, yeah, you could try to request,
but just don't get mad if it doesn't happen because like,
oh my song doesn't fit this night. No.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
Yeah, understand your request and understand what the night is.
That's probably the biggest one.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Yeah. Also if they may not know I mean peak
peak times, you know bangers when they usually play exactly
Like will why I'm asking, like when would they usually play?
Speaker 3 (24:46):
Oh, between twelve thirty and the club closing.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Yes, DJ's we wanted to be twelve thirty. But sometimes
let's just say from eleven thirty.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Yes, So don't be walking in at ten thirty asking
for the hottest song out right now it's not going to.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Play, yeah, because I mean that takes our energy. Like
we're we're looking forward to actually playing this song, to
be honest with you.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
We're looking forward just like a build up, right.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
We know the reaction and we feed off that reaction.
So if we play that too early, it's kind of
like we got here and now we don't even any
place else to go. So, I mean, we got up
to the reaction we want. Now we're just like you know,
tumbling off of it, So it takes our energy away.
I think probably I wouldn't say there's so much of
a time frame to play the music, just when we
(25:28):
feel the energy is right in the crowd.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Yeah, because some comes crowds could be earlier or later.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Right, Like we'll get an early crowd and then we'll
get a break, and then we'll get another crowd. Yeah,
And sometimes we'll just have early crowd and people leave early,
So you never know.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Now, do you guys have set lists a lot of
the time, or you kind of freestyle or it depends
on the night.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Me personally, I never go into a night with like
a set list of I know what I want to play.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
You have like ideas of what you want to do,
but I don't.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
I don't go into it like I'm going to play this,
I have to play these songs. No, I don't go
into a list.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
So I personally we don't have a playlist. But I've
been doing this for the past maybe five years, because
I used to be before, you know, years ago, I
was like, nah, you're supposed to go into it freestyle,
kind of read the crowd. But as of late, especially
(26:19):
with my anxiety, I don't have necessarily a playlist. I
have a folder for that nightclub.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
I want to get to those specific songs.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
Things I know I want to get to. Am I
going to play it in this order?
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Never? I'm not going to play it in that order.
I don't know when to.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
But it releaves my anxiety because sometimes I'll block where
I'm like, wait, where do I want to go? I'll
just look at that list and pick a BPM, like, Okay,
I know how to get to this little chunk of music,
so I prepare. I don't have a play list but
I prepare songs for that certain night, so that's it.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
And then also different different clubs is also different vibes too, right, Yeah, yeah,
like maybe you know, like you were saying, maybe one
night you're leaning more Spanish because the type of crowd
that comes, or maybe one night it's a little bit
more you know as DJs. So I don't know, if
you kind of got to know your environment.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
I don't know if you do this Straws, but.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
I could play the same nightclub every weekend, but depending
on the people, you'll hear different vibes. So it's kind
of like what Gizo just said. If I see heavy
latinos in attendance, my Latin set is gonna be longer,
(27:40):
Like I'm gonna pick more stuff. And then sometimes I
don't know if you do this, you know, sometimes you're
not there like oh it's a hip hop crowd, but
I'll experiment and drop. I'll go a little upbeat and
then get to like more of a housey edm stuff
and I just feel it out. If if you could,
you could tell when the energy gets low when you play.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
A song like I need to go back to the hill.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
Trust me, I'll get out of it, I'll get out
of it. So yeah, I test as DJs, We test
the crowd and then if they give us energy, we're
gonna stay there for a few minutes.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
Yeah, it's like when it's getting good, like you want
to stay there, Like, yeah it's good, We're gonna stay
in that zone for a little bit. Try something here,
try something there. If it starts to work there, just
you know, fill it out. That's the best way to
do it.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Now, are there times where you got to like purposely
kind of bring it down or notch because I know
sometimes club owners are like, yo, no one's heading to
the bar because it's just two cracking. So maybe you
gotta like, you know, slow it down a little bit
so people kind of leave the dance floor. Is anything
you guys do or.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
That one does happen. I tend to not listen to that.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Like I'm doing me right.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
Well.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
The other way of doing it is just saying it
on the mic, like hit the bar, get some drinks.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
That's my favorite thing to say. Let's go to the bar.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Let's go to the bar.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
You know that's actually happened to me. Where this was
years ago. I was in Maderra, a bar owner. He
was like, man, there's nobody at my bar. I was like, yeah,
they're out.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
On the dance You're like, I'm doing my job.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Yeah. He said, can you switch everything right now? Was
like a yeah, So I don't know what I put on,
but I'm on some random stuff and they looked at
me crazy.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
I know.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
So now you look bad right at the owner, like
this is what you wanted. So but they went to
the bar. So thankfully they didn't leave, but they went
to the bar.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
So you guys have club owners or managers or whatever
they tell you guys what to play or what not
to play.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
I've had a what not to play scenario, but that's
just more specifically like like if it's too too r
rated or it's too like two raunchy, they won't want
something like that because they want to keep the energy
of the club up and that type of music brings
it down a little bit. Got you, But I mean
that's pretty much it. They they give us free reign
because we've done this for so long that people understand
(29:58):
we're going to bring this type of crowd, We're going
to bring this type of energy. So thankfully we've been
able to do it for so long and people know
that about us. But we've had you know, and I've
had instances where club owners be like, A try to
stay away from these types of things.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
When that happens to me, I have to respect it.
You know, their business, it's their business. So I'll listen
to those requests from the club owners and also you'll
I'll ask them like.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Is it okay to go here?
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Those ye know, But I respect those things because it's
their business, and like you said, they're the ones, they're
the ones that hire me. There was a question I
have and we've kind of went, I know, I'm trying
to remember now.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
What is oh shoot request scenarios?
Speaker 2 (30:46):
Was that it?
Speaker 1 (30:46):
No, it was I was going to go somewhere else
with it. We saw you know that happens, pod Man,
It's not a Q and a what what's a What
do you got going on for the holidays?
Speaker 3 (30:59):
And you have some gigs come up? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Any you guys do like holiday parties?
Speaker 1 (31:04):
I'm doing once tonight as the recording of this are
really in a private holiday party.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
You're gonna crash it, That's what I'm.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Those are tough sometimes because this parties that one you
have to go into it. You can't go into it
with a club mentality. Yeah, it's sometimes it can get tough,
But if you go into it with the right mentality
of don't try to make this into a night club,
it's gonna be a lot of requests. It's not gonna
be a lot of blending and mixing until it gets that, you.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Know, Like private parties, that's cool. Like the request, I understand,
that's that's a little different.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
It's little bit more intimate anyways.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Right, weddings, Actually, when I do weddings, I have a
whole questionnaire like do you guys have a list of
music that you would like to play?
Speaker 2 (31:45):
Like, I have a full on question That's pretty standard though,
right when you do weddings.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Yeah, so I know requests are gonna come, so I
expect it. But when it's a club, don't listen, we're
working for one, don't come doc talks and bother us.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Because the club is like it's more public. So it's
just you know what I'm saying. Whereas like your private
events is a private event, so requests makes sense.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Yeah, definitely. But I mean, yeah, private events, I'm cool
with request for that because I mean it's expected. Yeah, yeah,
it's expected in the club, but it's like it shouldn't
have fun, got fun, leave me alone?
Speaker 1 (32:16):
Yeah that I think that's the best way that you
just said it is. Again advice to club goers, just
go into it having fun. Yeah, and if you don't
hear your song, guess what, you get to go in
your car and you get play that song over many
times as you want. But just enjoy the people that
you're around, Enjoy the night. But Straws, man, I know
(32:37):
you've in DJ around town. You're even the Fresno State
men's basketball in stadium DJ.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Yeah, shouts out to them. Shouts out to them. As
a matter of fact, they just hit me to do
their water polo coming up next month. I was like, wow,
they want to DJ for water polo? Cool?
Speaker 2 (32:53):
Why not. I'll try to be the Fresno State sports.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
DJ as well in the football stadium. Yeah, man, you there,
but no, Yeah, it's it's fun and Fresno State's amazing.
I love everybody there. Their energy is always great. They
always take care of me. Man, anything I need they
always They're always there for me. So I really appreciate them.
But yeah, yeah, I got to Uh.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
I was a Straws backup when he got busy with
like multiple gigs.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, you did the basketball I did the basketball game.
I left the gig to come over there and check
on you too. I was like, you know what, I'm
gonna go check I have a little bit of time
right now. So I went over there and checked.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
On That was fun. That was fun. I enjoyed myself.
So yeah, whenever you need a backup, have.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
You been DJing? I know you don't do it as
much Magic, but straw it's like high schools or any schools.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
I did do high schools. I haven't done a prom
in years. I haven't done like a formal or something
like that in years. What's that vibe like doing high schools?
It's very clean, which is cool. I understand it because
it's school. They don't they have to play clean music.
A lot of requests with the high schools. Yeah, it's
it's it's difficult because you want to have fun with
the kids and all this stuff, but you still have
(33:59):
to do your job, and you know, you got to
please the principle.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
And they want to hear the bad ship right and
you can't.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
So always it's the worst. The kids of the I
like kids, but they can be some dicks.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Damn man, I've gotten some heat from DJ's because you
brought up the clean version. Being in radio for years,
that's all I would download is the clean versions of
every fucking song. It's all clean because I would always
have to be prepared for high schools, public events, and
them on always had clean that's and as for me,
(34:34):
I don't want to fill up my computer with four
of the same songs and it's like two dirty to
you know anyway exactly. But this just recent happen. Recently
happened in LA when I was DJing and I was
I was playing one of the hottest songs. But all
I have is the clean version. And the DJs that
(34:55):
were they're watching me, they're like, okay, no, they go,
they go, what did they say? They said, you know
you're on radio win that's true, and they're like really clean.
I was like, you know what, I tell them, I
let the crowd cuss, Like, let them do the cuss part. Man.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
Now with stems, we can take the words out. Just
let them sing the whole song. Just let them be there.
Right Oh man?
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Yeah, New Year's Eve, you're doing New Year's New Year's Eve.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
Actually, yes, I will be. I'll be at no we
have a basketball game that day first, so i'll be
a friends'll say basketball, we have a game that day,
and then I'll be at Vibes that night, so I'm
closing out the night. I'll get there just before midnight.
So thankfully with that, So New Year's Eve was gonna
be fun? What about you?
Speaker 1 (35:39):
New Year's Eve is gonna be a wild one for
me because I'm not where I'm I'm DJing at sunset,
but I go on vacation the next day, January first.
I haven't vacation in years. Just don't knows this. I
haven't traveled in years. And my flight is on January first,
(36:00):
nine am in LA.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
That's harsh.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
So after the club, which is around two here, I'm
DJing New Year's two am. Two am, I'm already gonna
be packed.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
You know, you could have chose your flight time right
like you had you wouldn't have to leave it nine
o'clock in the morning.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Trust me, this was the best flight. I took, the
best one I could find. So right after the club
two am, I'm hoping that it's not foggy. If if
you live in the five to five nine. You know
the craziness of how dense the fog can be at night.
But regardless either either way, I'm driving home at.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Two a m.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
And then you're not gonna be able to arc rest.
You're gonna have to get ready and go straight to
the airport.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
I don't mind, because then I'll knock out on X
is huge. So it's gonna be a it's gonna be
a wild New Year's Eve for me, and I think
I'm gonna document it and kind of like make a
blog of how that night goes.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
So what did you fly? Do you have like t
s a pre check?
Speaker 1 (36:59):
No, I want to see I haven't flown. I would
get it if this was me ten years ago when
I flew.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Yeah, I mean, I'm telling you it's a life saver.
Like I got to the airport in Denver, and you
know how big Denvers are. Yeah, I got there thirty
minutes before the flight, made it through all the checkpoints,
and got to my flight on time.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
I was like, oh my damn.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Normally it takes about an hour just to get from
the gate to your flight, but I got there thirty minutes.
It was the best experience I got lost in the
airport once. But yeah, TSC pre checked. I appreciate the world.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Did you get to uh let out your rent for
the request of Are you feeling better now?
Speaker 2 (37:41):
You know what?
Speaker 3 (37:42):
I can breathe, I'll get a shot. Just My suggestion
is just just accept it. You know it's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
It happens every freaking club we go to, So just
accept it. Find ways to diffuse it. Like for me,
I just say yes to everything.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
And I don't say yes anymore. I shut the club down,
shut the club down. To money with your requests. Bring
money with your request, h yep, I like that.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Twenty dollars minimum, right minimum?
Speaker 2 (38:12):
I take cash up, credit card?
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Oh man, where was I going to go with this?
I think we could just wrap it up with that.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
Man.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Well, happy holidays and happy New Year.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
Happy birthday again? Yes?
Speaker 1 (38:25):
Oh burns Burns straws. His birthday's on Monday.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Oh or no, don't tell anybody that the twenty third.
Happy birthday to you, bro.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
And Dan those December birthdays is rough? Right, No, it's cool, really,
I like it.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
I mean I'm getting old.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Why do you say it's rough? Because of the whole combination.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
Yeah, it was Christmas. Like, I just actually read the
like on average people that guy December birthdays get like
two less presents than like people outside of December and
throughout throughout my I mean, it probably affects you guys
more as kids, you know what I mean, But.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
As kids, and mine's wild because mine's in the beginning
of December as bad.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
But as that's a little rough, bro.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
I mean, I didn't know there was an average amount
of gifts you got.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
You get what you get, So as kids, we would
always get money from the aunts and uncles, but since
it came in December, the card would come in. Man,
this this happens every year. The card would come in.
I have two siblings and it would say twenty dollars
for your brother, twenty dollars for your sister, and here's
(39:28):
thirty dollars for Christmas and Birthday.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
And in my head the math ain't mathing because how
come they got twenty Yeah, every year that happened, So
I agree with it with it's rough having it.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
It's a little close. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
