(00:00):
It's time for the Vikings Country, brought to you by Miller Lights. Now
here's your host of Vikings Country fromKfan and the Vikings Radio Network. Muss
Joseph's right footed Kikes is God inthe Minnesota Vikings have taken a three zero
(00:20):
lead with one fifty seven to goin the game. Fucking around Christmas tree
at Christmas. You gotta let thisbreathe. You can't see all right guardsan
Christmas tree. Oh, let thatholiday spirit flow. It's not even cool
(00:45):
one. Oh, I know thisis Kfan. How you guys doing?
I'm must and welcome to Vikings Countrywith Noller Light, the official beer sponsor
of the Minnesota Vikings. We're hangingout here employmouth. We're at Sunshine Factory
and apparently it's because we're in hisbackyard. Is the only reason that Hall
of Famer Randall McDaniel, How areyou, buddy? I'm going great?
(01:07):
Laps me on? What are youdoing over there? Check? We gotta
get this microphone right up in there. Yeah, there you go. There're
gonna try that again. Three twoone? Okay, Hey, how are
you doing better? Yeah? Ohbeautiful, beautiful. It's got a deeper
voice than I do. I waslike, I don't want to be in
the air with him. That's whatI did. I actually turned it down.
Brenda Lee, I mean rocking aroundon the Christmas tree. She just
(01:29):
turned seventy nine, by the way, and she is now two weeks in
a row at number one on theBillboard Hot one hundred. At seventy nine,
she's the oldest person to be onthat. Are you a big Brenda
Lee rocking around the Christmas tree fan? Oh? God? Normally if my
wife made me change. When Icame here the month of December, all
(01:49):
ever wears Grinch stuff, so ohreally I had to pull my grin shirt
off the hand of ye hate people. I hate warning. I hate warning
people. Thought, but December birthdaydoes that to you? Oh yeah,
when is your birthday? The nineteenth? Okay? A very nice, very
nice. So it's not too closeto Christmas where it's ruined, Like,
you know, your Christmas is andbirthday. You get that double gift when
(02:10):
you're a kid. Yeah, toooften often so yeah, so I have
a little fun with it. Imean, I'm no longer teaching at school,
but every day in the month ofDecember I wear a grand shirt that's
a different one every day. Thatis sweet. So now, are you
more the original where you got BorisKarloff as a Grinch the cartoon bit there,
(02:34):
or are you more like can youactually go from that and then go
into Jim Carrey version. I'm stillthe original. Mean my bring tone to
someone called my phone, that's what'sgonna ring. So it's all set,
everything's good. And the guy whowas the voice of Tony the Tiger is
the guy who is singing the songYou're one, Yeah, yeah, And
I believe I think the guy's fromMinnesota. If I'm not correct on that
(02:57):
one, someone will absolutely correct me. That's why we have social media,
which is fun. So are youuh, as you mentioned, you're more
Grinch than anything else. But like, when it comes to Christmas time,
Randall, are you a kind ofa Clark w Griswold? Do you put
up like a ton of holiday lightsoutside and just go nuts with the whole
(03:19):
thing? I'm serious? Mean,mi's finn of getting ready for Christmas?
Yeah, my wife gets a tree, I take it off the car,
I bring it in, I setit up for and I'm done. So
I packed the boxes, I bringthem out, I give her all the
decorations, but no, she ismore of that. Yeah, she puts
it all up. She takes herall that. All I gotta do is
(03:42):
help bring it out and then putit away in the end. College sweethearts.
Yeah, you and your wife Marianne. Right, Yes, in nineteen
eighty nine. I believe that youguys got married rightly. Yeah, well,
you're stalking me with you a littlebit, A little bit, I
got some time on Marie. Okay. So is it hard to get gifts
when you've been married that long?Because I know my family hates it because
I'm a dude and if I wantsomething, I just go, you go
(04:03):
get it. Yeah? Yeah,But is it hard to find something or
do you guys just have like asystem or does she wrap her own stuff?
And I have had this happen beforewhere I watched her open it and
I was as surprised as you scatteredat Yah know, no, I actually
know I throughout the year, Ihear her talk about things that she likes
(04:24):
or what she would rather have. Her best friend and her always talk all
the time. So I'll give herbest friend to call throughout the year.
Go hey, when you guys areon that trip, what does she look
at? What does she like? And so that way, then as Christmas
gets close, I've already bought thepresent, right and it's just waiting to
be you know, I will wrapit nicely. I'm not gonna do it
(04:45):
yourself. Oh yeah, I haveto. Even with these bad hands,
I can still do something. Youmentioned again about a teaching And it's been
what a year and a half nowsince the year and a half since I
retired? Yeah, and was theyears that you tell because you volunteered for
a while, right, yes,I did, and then that was when
you were actually playing I was stillplaying, yes, And then did that
(05:08):
help it all with knowing how towork a classroom of what normally would you
had like third graders, right?Yeah? Had elementary kids? Right,
So working these elementary kids and thengoing into the locker room and working with
kids that are probably not as wellbehaved. Do you know what? Working
(05:28):
in the classroom was similar to workbeing in the locker room. Every different
attitude or I mean, everybody's differentand you got to come together somehow and
work it out. So dealing withall the characters on the offensive line made
it easy for me to sit inthe classroom with all the different kids.
So I mean, I mean,but I will say this football was a
lot easier than working at the school. It was that much. Yeah yeah,
(05:53):
all right, Well Hall of Famer, I mean, my goodness,
and the list that we have here. Seven times first Team All Pro,
two times second Team All Pro,twelve consecutive Pro Bowls you played eleven,
which is a record for the MinnesotaVikings. Yeah, and then you went
and played in twelve of those ProBowls Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor. Of
(06:14):
course, if there is a hallof fame of any kind, you have
been inducted into it. Not onlythe NFL College Football Hall of Fame,
the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. And if Sunshine Factory and Miller Lte had
a plaque here, I would guessit would have Random McDaniel's name on it.
(06:35):
I've been fortunate. I mean,there's quite a few. There's some
others. One my wife didn't gowith me when I went to it,
the National High School Hall of Fame. Oh yes, I'm sorry, I
forgot that one. Yeah, yeah, So she was sick of celebrating me.
At that point, invited all thefriends over to the darts at my
face on a big poster board andeverything. But yes, she's lovingly,
(06:57):
lovingly, lovingly yes, yes,So I left for that one and she
was like, Nope, you're onyour own for this one. And we
had just come back from Canton, and then this one happened too, so
yeah, I went, I understand. So, yeah, I do want
to ask you something about the Hallof Fame Canton. Okay, we'll get
to that in just a second. Here, as Randall McDaniel is, my
guess, you're from Arizona. Sothis is the part I don't understand necessarily
(07:18):
because most people who retire in Minnesotathey go to Arizona. True, you've
retired from two jobs and you're stillhere. I'm still here. I mean
I grew up in Arizona. Imean I sun deviled through and through.
Always wanted to go there. Butwhen it came time to get drafted and
go somewhere else, I wanted toleave. Came here. You know the
(07:42):
worst thing about it was I hadto learn to drive in the snow,
and I had to learn how tokeep my feet from putting them too close
to the heater and setting them onfire. So figured that out and then
like I said, the people hereare great, the quality of life is
good then, and I was doingwhat I wanted to do here, so
why go back home and do it? Yeah? And then I actually do
(08:03):
do it when I go back thereand on it. But this is home
now, this has been home sinceeighty eight. So yeah, nineteen eighty
eight, the first round of thedraft in the Minnesota Vikings. We're so
fortunate to get one of the greatest, greatest offensive linemen that's ever played the
game. I don't know about that. What do you mean you have a
bust that tells you that, wheredo you keep that? Do you have
(08:24):
one at home? Do they giveyou like a copy? They do give
you a copy right right? WhatI'm imagining is that because Kirk Cousins did
that whole quarterback thing that documentary.I don't know if you saw it or
not, but he's got like thissecret room and that's where he keeps all
of his memorabilia. So that waynobody has. This is how I imagine
it. There, McDaniel, home, give me your picture, is that
you have your bust right there, and then you pull it and it's on
(08:48):
a lever and then it opens uplike a bookshelf, and then that's where
that's where the man cave and allthe stuff is where you can sit there
and hide away from your wife. No, I don't have I mean the
copy replica of the bus is downstairswhere I have all the stuff from when
I played football, and it's stuffthat I collected from other players. Uh.
(09:09):
The bus is in a corner ofa nook by the pool table that
no one can really see unless you'restanding by the pool table, right.
No, half my stuff is putin the storage room. So if yeah,
my secret room is the storage room. If you're playing pool and you
got buddies coming over and you juststart to get some chirping going on,
(09:30):
I put it away. You putit away? Yeah, you just put
it right on the pool table, going. I think I'll h you guys
rack them up. If you metmy buddy, I mean my buddy for
the lineman, the kites from college. Yeah, if I'm out with them,
people will assume that I'm a nobodybecause they talk trash with me like
I'm justice, which is great, keeps you humble. But yeah, no,
(09:52):
that that bus gets put away,it'll probably get tossed somewhere the Uh,
here's the other question about the HullFame. As I alluded to before,
and obviously congratulations. What an unbelievablething to be inducted into. I
can't knowhi on the NFL Hall ofFame. Do they gotta do it on
the hottest damn day? Every singleperson is just melting. They gotta figure
(10:16):
out something else because it's almost uncomfortableand you're wearing that gold jacket. But
all of a sudden you're starting toget some pits going here. Yeah,
but I will say this over theyears, so this is what coming up
in my sixteenth year. Yeah.We used to be at the opposite end
of the thing with the sun shiningin your face. Oh yeah, so
every and before they updated it andredid the stadium. So when I went
(10:37):
in, I was looking into thesun and it was it was I saw
your induction speech. Yeah, yeah, what a day. But I mean
the best part about it after afterI gave my speech, it used to
be a little locker room underneath thestage. Yeah, and Jack Youngbludd and
Ay randall come with me and wewent down underneath the stage and had a
couple of beers after my speech wasdone. So perfect can't do that now,
(11:01):
but well you can well if you'resneaking about it. We're gonna talk
a little bit of golf. Wehave coming up in our next segment,
the five typically stupid Vikings Country questions, and I'm gonna run you through.
Okay, We're also going to talka little bit about the twenty twenty three
Minnesota Vikings and by the way,Friday football feasts coming up this Friday.
(11:22):
I believe they're still doing it onFriday. You go to kfan dot com
or Vikings dot com with Buffalo WildWings, Paul Allen, Paul charch In
and the whole like there Friday footballfeest that's brought you by Whore's Light.
But we're here at Vikings Country withMiller Lte Sunshine Factory here in Plymouth.
We're hanging out with Randall McDaniel righthere on the fan. Canadas, are
(11:45):
you looking to switch your the fan? It's time for Vikings Country, brought
to you by Miller Lte. Nowhere's your host of Vikings Country from Kfan
and the Vikings Radio Network. Howabout it must Joseph's right foot games is
gone. Few Minnesota vine gems havetaken a freeze zero lead with one fifty
(12:11):
seven to go in the game. It's yeah, ready to go. Sorry,
Hi, and welcome back to VikingsCountry. Ladies and gentlemen here with
Miller Light Sunshine Factory. Look atall of our sweet looking skull nation hanging
(12:33):
out with us hoping to get tickets. Ers who remain in games where you
can get that skull chant on atthe US Bank Stadium in the Miller Lite
Lounge and we'll have those to begiven away. We're here until eight thirty
at Sunshine Factory in Plymouth. Thenwe are here with Randall McDaniel, Hall
of Famer. Ladies and gentlemen iswith us six four. I figured you'd
(12:54):
like that. A schoolhouse rock threeis a magic number. We won three
rip very, I'm just a bill. Oh. Just that guy's voice is
just amazing. Yeah, some ofthe best stuff ever man, and especially
as a teacher, you had tolove that stuff. It was awesome.
(13:15):
Okay, all right, so herewe go. Let's talk about everybody always
would bring up the stance, okay. And it came from an injury,
right, That's how it did.It started from an injury. For me,
I look like that if I droppedmy phone on the floor of my
house. That's what it looked likeby trying to pick it up. But
so how did that come about? And then why did you stick with him?
(13:39):
Okay, so the stance came about. What the week before it,
I'll be We're playing Pittsburgh and myteammate, who was a college teammate as
well form alignment, Todd Kyless, went to chop this man. He chopped
me so he rose up my leg. I sprained partial tear media collateral and
I was supposed to miss four weeks. Yeah, we come back. I'm
(14:01):
practicing. I'm doing the rehab.I missed it one week and I'm still
doing rehab and they go to putme in a running pool. I mean,
I can't swim, So I said, I'm practicing. You know,
friend ZAMBERLETTI and I get in anargument and I tell I'm not getting in
the pool. And so I practicedthat day and they put me in the
old DonJoy knee brace that wasn't mine. It was a used one, and
(14:26):
because I hadn't earned the right toget one yet, So that week I
started screwing around more and practice withthat brace on, and finally the coach
said, well, if you cando that, you can dress out.
So I'm dressed out for the game. I'm not supposed to play Dave Huffman.
The garden there was having a roughgame, and my coach yelled at
me to get in, and Irun out as I passed play very first
(14:46):
play, I can't get low enoughbecause that brace won't let me get down
like I need to. So Iturned my good leg and got into that
stance just to get down low enough. So that was your good leg that
had that That was my good legturned out, Yes, that was a
good one. And then then thed lineman I can't remember his name right
now. He kept telling me,I can't tell what you're doing. Man,
(15:07):
it looks like you're gonna go right. But then you come straight at
me, and I'm looking at himlike, so what do you think I'm
doing right now? And then hemakes his guests and I go, now,
I'm coming right after you. Hegoes not with that stance, and
then boom, I hit him inthe mountain. So all game long,
I'm like, wait, you can'tread my stance. Why would I ever
go back to a conventional stance whenyou can't read it. So John Michaels,
(15:28):
my line coach, said, theday did you get beaten that stance,
You're going back to the normal stance. And so that's how that whole
thing came about. It worked.Yeah, yeah. My college line coach
would always say, don't you tellpeople I taught you that. I'm like,
so I didn't. Nope, hedidn't teach me that, And you
don't use that stance on the golfcourse. Here. I got a whole
(15:48):
different thing going on. The golfers. We were talking about that off the
air, big time golfers. Welove it. And I'm sad to say
that you won't have a hole ofone, but I do. So you
haven't played tebble Beach. It's avery good point. Okay, you got
me, all right. So let'stalk a little bit more about Hall of
(16:11):
Fame than Aaron Rodgers. It lookslike they think he's gonna be clear to
play, like what on Christmas.I believe it is. They think he
can be able to come from backfrom that injury and play. Now.
I bring that up only because thatwould be amazing. Nonetheless, but he's
an easy guy to not like becausehe played with the Packers for so long.
But when it comes to the hall. Are there people in the Hall
(16:36):
of Fame in Can't Ohio that you'relike, I never really liked that guy.
Do I have to answer that? No? Yeah, you know I
can answer it. No. Thereare guys I played against that are in
the Hall that we didn't get alongwhen we're playing against each other and we
actually get along great now. Imean, yeah, it's a team that
(16:56):
you get on and you can neverbe cut from, even if you you're
still stuck on this team. Andthen a lot of guys who you get
there and you let everything go.Yeah, there are some guys I don't
see him too often. If I'mthe older school that will hold on to
a grudge for a little while. They'll chat with the guy, but you
can tell they're still mad about theplaying days. But Singletary will talk to
(17:17):
you after he blew him up.Yes, Singletary and I hang out together.
I mean I hang out with alot of the Bears. Before Gail
Sayers passed away, he was oneof my favorite players. Yeah, I
mean I wrote a paper about himwhen I was in eighth grade. And
then here I am with my hero. This whole time. Yeah and yeah,
so yeah, the Bear, Imean, there's everybody gets along.
Well, I mean, I callthese guys up. I mean Elvin,
(17:40):
but they played with the Houston Oilers. He and I talked every other week
on the phone. He always wantedto know what was happening in the classroom
with the kids, just because hewanted to get the stories. And I'm
like, yeah, okay, butno, everybody, literally we do get
along. Oh that's that's awesome tohear. I was watching your highlights here
this afternoon. I was just gettingready and I'll was like, man,
(18:00):
it really sucked to be a Giantwhen when you were playing, because it
was almost every highlight was oh theregoes another giant who was getting pancakes.
The Giants, the forty nine Ers, the Bears, the love we used
to I used to play full backon short yards and gold line on Yeah.
Well that's when you hit Signaltony. That's when I hit a lot of
those guys like that. I mean, what lineman's not going to love that?
(18:23):
Or you you playing full back? It's short yard. It's his job
is the stuff, the running backin the hole so that everybody can tackle
him. And he's supposed to stuffme in the hole. Yeah, he
can't avoid me. He has totake me on. And I used to
sit there smiling when I went backthere. I mean some of the guys.
I told him I haven't fled out, told him it's coming right there
for me. You know nothing youcan do about it, either you stop
(18:47):
me, you don't. And Imean I love that. You might have
to make a business decision because I'mcoming right at you there. All right,
Here we go. Five typically stupidVikings country questions. Okay, your
Viking's Country with Miller Lte we're atSunshine fact Tree and Randall McDaniel. He
is my guest, all right.Number one, your teammate John Randall.
He so many videos of him withthe regulators. Move out right. So
(19:12):
a big young guns fan obviously therefor you. Favorite movie back when you
were playing it? Was there amovie that was like over and over again?
I want to watch? Uh huh? Well was it Dirty Harry Clint
Eastwood movies? Oh yeah, Iwatched all the Dirty Harry movies. I
used to watch them before I playeda game. No kid, Yeah,
just get that little extra edge. All right? Number two, here we go
