(00:00):
All right, thanks for coming outagain tonight. Uh to Tips bar here
Tips in Saint Paul Tiffany's is thespot to be with with Blake Brandell of
the Minnesota Vikings. Everybody offensive LinemanBlake Brandell. Uh thanks, Yeah,
there you go a lon of applause. Let's go. The draft is a
week from Thursday. Blake, yougot drafted what, Uh, I don't
(00:20):
know if it was it four orfive years ago? Yeah, twenty yep.
So what was your your what wasyour draft experience? Like, give
us the breakdown A couple of monthsmaybe leading up to the draft. Where
did you think you were gonna getpicked? Did you know the Vikings were
interested to give us that whole kindof two month window. My my whole
deal was it was COVID and sooh yeah, everything was non traditional.
(00:41):
Thankfully I got my pro day inbefore U before everything got canceled. But
yeah, it was strange because theydidn't do any visits or anything like that.
No one really came out to seeus. So you're just kind of
waiting for zoom links zoom calls, and you'd hop on those and you'd talk
and the d C how smart youare in the football room and I had
I had no idea where I wasgoing. It was. It was a
it was a strange time, forsure, But I'm obviously happy on serious
(01:03):
ad minisota. You just have hoursand hours of zoom calls is lined up
with every team or how did thatwork? Yeah, I mean that obviously
the teams that are interested, andyeah, they get you on the on
the computer and quizia and tell younot to take notes and all that stuff,
and it was it was strange.I mean, they really just wanted
to see what you could retain andkind of your baseline football knowledge, and
(01:25):
uh, yeah, they don't makeit easy. So interesting, all right,
So when did you know that theVikings were interested or did you not
know until they literally called your name? I had a meeting with the online
coach at the time, Rick Dennison, and uh, I thought it went
well. But I mean I hadme and my agent both, I mean,
we're we're kind of sitting I wassitting on the couch kind of waiting,
hanging out. I was actually playingmonopoly with my parents and my girl
(01:47):
my girlfriend at the time now mywife, and uh, I mean got
a phone call and a minute laterit's up on the TV, and it's
like, all right, here wego. So, all right, so
let's let's get away from the Draft. Because I'm a board game nerd,
so Monopoly with more than two peopleas a nightmare because it never ends.
Yes, you were playing with yourparents and your girlfriend now wife. Yes,
that was by design. I meanit's a long day, and so
it's like, we might as wellplay a long game, something that's going
(02:09):
to hold my attention. You know, I can still watch the Draft,
We've got it on in the background, but sure, I don't want to
be staring at the TV the wholetime. And so it seemed like the
appropriate game. I don't think wefinished the game. No, you can't.
That's the point. If you playwith more than two people, the
game never ends. How do youhandle free parking? Do you do the
thing where because everybody has like theirown rules for free parking. Do you
(02:30):
do it where all the taxes, all of the money goes into the middle
and then if you land on freeparking you get the entire pot? Or
do you just play that there's nothingfor free parking? Do you put five
hundred in the middle like everybody playsthat kind of differently. My family likes
to have it be a progressive jackpot. Yeah, and if you land on
it, then you just scoop thisgiant. That's the only way to end
the game, because then you canyount amass so much money that you can
(02:52):
just build up all your properties andjust end it. You know. I
think that was the last time I'veplayed Monopoly fair but or not, And
so I couldn't tell you for sure, but I'm I'm a rule nut,
and so I always go by whateverthe rule is, so got it.
Whatever the ruling is on the monopoly, you know, packet whatever, that's
probably what we're doing. We're watchingWheel of Fortune right now. I just
ended and you were saying you're moreof a Jeopardy guy than Wheel of Fortune.
(03:13):
Absolutely, My wife and I loveJeopardy. We love to watch.
Neither one of us do very good, but it's okay, it's cool to
watch. So when the categories they'llgo across the top of the screen on
Jeopardy, what what are some ofthe categories where the second may pop up?
You're like, all right, that'sgonna be me. I got a
shot, and your what's your skillset? Anything sports related? Sports?
And then probably something like classic rockor any any form of like seventies,
(03:35):
eighties and nineties music. That's kindof what I was raised on. So
those two I do pretty well typically, And then movies as well. So
you must have been were you bornin the late nineties though? Then right
nineteen ninety seven ninety seven, Okay, I call that the Limpiskit baby boom.
That's when everybody was having kids becauselimp Biskit was on top of the
earth. So but you like seventies, eighties and nineties rock, so basically
(03:57):
the stuff that precedes your life.Yeah, so give me some of the
bands. Let's let's walk through someof your favorite bands from any of those
decades. I I personally love likenineties grunge, so Alison, Chains,
Pearl Jam, even Nirvana. Yuhlove the heavy metal stuff so like Metallica,
Uh, Pantera, stuff like that, and then some of the more
classic stuff Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, stuff like that. So yeah,
(04:21):
is that your workout playlist as well? Yeah? And stuff yeps A lot
of Pantara for sure. So whathappens at TCO in terms of music choice
when you go to the gym uhand the rest of the team is there.
Who gets to decide what is everybodylistening to? Or is it all
headphones and AirPods? No? No, everyone's listening to the same uh,
same music, same playlist. Butit's it's really first come, first serve.
(04:43):
And then if you throw something onthat's bad enough to be skipped,
it will be skipped. So whogets to decide whoever, whoever wants to
go in? I mean, it'sit's free reign over the there's one little
iPhone that's in there that kind ofcontrols the whole deal. And so yeah,
I mean, I got I assumeit's ever genre, right, Somebody
wants to hear whatever's playing. Somebodywants the opposite of what's playing. Yeah,
(05:05):
man, that's gotta be a that'sgot to be a dicey thing to
fight over. It's it is tricky. Typically whatever is thrown on is left
alone. But you know it's areally bad pick when it ends up getting
skipped or fair change. So,speaking of workouts on a yearly basis,
how much does your workout change?Does does your position coach or the offensive
coordinator or a KOC or somebody say, all right, we like what you're
(05:28):
doing, but we think you needmore of blank and their specific workout,
you know, regiments over the offseason that they want you to work on
to increase the specific skill set.I would say now is kind of the
time of year where you figure outwhat you need to work on in order
to be ready for the season. But it's all supplemental. So we're all
for the most part doing the samelift, same run, and it's specific
(05:51):
to your position. So typically olined line lift together, run together,
wide receivers doing something different, dbs, same deal. So they kind of
catered in that regard. But youhave conversations with your position coach kind of
figuring out, Okay, how doI take the next step? What do
I need to improve on? Bodywise? Sure? All right, dumb
a question because clearly I'm not bigenough to play offensive line. Between center
(06:13):
guard and tackle, how much differencein terms of upper body strength versus lower
body strength? Like do you needto have stronger legs if you're a tackle
compared to a guard? Advice versusthings like that or is that kind of
a ridiculous It's definitely a question.I think a spectrum and some guys can
get away with some things because they'reso strong. Other guys can get away
with things because they're so fast. Some guys are great because they can do
(06:36):
both. I mean, so it'sjust kind of finding different ways with your
skill set to do the job.I will say I moving inside, it's
definitely more of a physical game interms of it feels like you're just out
there wrestling guys. It's a lotof fun. So that's more back and
upper. But I think it alsotranslates kind of back outside to tackle.
So who have you faced where you'rewrestling with some but defensively and they're just
(07:00):
they're just an absolute monster, LikeI cannot believe I have to try to
stop this human being from sacking KirkCousins are now you know, Donald and
beyond. Unfortunately, it's like everyweek, you know, they've they've got
their guy. Yeah, and soyou get a one on one with that
guy and it's like all right, here we go, you know, and
sometimes you're gonna kind of lose andit's it's just about effort at that point,
(07:21):
and other times, you know, you get him. So Kenny Clark's
a good one. I mean,he is just an absolute beefcake. Low
center of gravity, speed, offthe ball and then very powerful as well.
So he's one of those guys whereit's like, you know, you
you buckle that chin strap just alittle bit tighter for sure. All Right.
Another dumb question is a guy that'snot big enough to play offensive line
(07:42):
or football for that matter. Uh, In terms of timing in blocking,
does it matter who your quarterback is? Like, will you block the exact
same way for Sam Donald as youdid for Kirk Cousins or again whoever they
draft Potentially is it does your timingchange at all based on who's back there?
Or is it just all about theman in front of you? It's
you could get caught up in that, but I think the emphasis is doing
(08:03):
your job and finishing the guy acrossfrom you until ball is out, and
sometimes that's hard to tell, andso you just kind of got to focus
on that guy that's a crossed fromyou and kind of just take care of
business. I guess it might bea little bit more different with the tackles
because quarterbacks, you know, settheir depth. Sometimes they drop back further,
sometimes they drop back a little bittighter, So in that regard,
(08:24):
it can be different, But forthe most part, it's the same deal.
Yeah, so all right, nowlet's back up now that we decide
tracked off on Jeopardy and will affordsto monopoly and stuff, we go back
to draft day. When you getcalled by the Minnesota Vikings. What's your
first thought like in terms of excitement, predictability, what's just like the first
thing that went through your head whenwhen you knew it was specifically the Vikings.
I just think it was pure joy. And I knew going into the
(08:48):
whole process that Minnesota would be agreat place to go, not necessarily for
the opportunity, but for how thefranchises ran, ownership, support, the
coaching staff, which it was zimmeryat the time, but like it was
just I knew it was a goodplace to go. And that was the
first thing I talked to my agentabout, was like, these guys are
gonna do good job developing you, taking care of you. And so I
(09:11):
was just I was happy to gothere, and I had other friends that
went elsewhere, and it's just it'snot all the same, and so I'm
I'm really thankful that the franchise andorganization is ran how it is. Well.
I love that because you're not obviouslyjust kissing ask because there was that
that nfl PA survey that came outa month ago, and it was basically
the Dolphins and the Vikings, right, and then everybody else. Yeah,
(09:31):
the Vikings ownership group just gets Ravereviews, TCO gets Rave reviews, us
Bank Stadium gets Rave reviews. Thecafeteria, the workouts, the trainings,
like basically across the board, youguys just got a's a's, a's,
a's a. So you're confirming allof that that that's not a you know,
smoking mirrors. That's legit. Thatis one true. And I can
attest talking to other guys too thathave been elsewhere. You know, I've
(09:54):
only been in Minnesota, so Ihave nothing to go off of, but
guys that have come from other teamssay this, so yeah, it's a
real deal. I've liked I thinkI think the Chiefs were one of the
examples. But I've liked how manyother teams have tried to make changes since
that survey came out, and thenthey've all said it wasn't in response to
that, like, you know, upgrades to the cafeteria, and then they're
trying to say, well, wewere gonna do that anyway, It had
(10:16):
nothing to do with our players sayingthat our cafeteria sucks. Kind of funny
how it works, right, Funnyhow that works out. So will you
be watching the draft next Thursday? Is that something that a lot of the
team actually actively watches or is itjust however it plays out, it plays
out and we'll talk about it thefollowing day. I will for sure be
watching the draft, especially that firstround. You know, I have no
idea what the plan is with thefront office and everything, but you know,
(10:39):
who knows a lot could happened onDraft Day, and so I'm very
excited to see kind of where itgoes. Yeah, I mean, the
Vikings are obviously one of the bigswingers in the first round, right,
A lot of people expect you guysto move up and maybe grab a quarterback
in the future. We'll see what'sit like not having Kirk because obviously that's
been your entire NFL career as KirkCousins. Yeah, Kirk is a great
guy and we're definitely gonna miss him. I mean, he's huge leader in
(11:01):
the locker room, and every timeI talk about Kirk, it seems like
I'm talking about him as a personbefore. I'm talking about him as a
as a player, and he's agreat player too, but you know,
that's just how the league works sometimes, and I'm gonna miss him, but
at the same time, it's timeto turn a new leaf and kind of
going there with the mindset that we'regonna get the job done with whatever guys
(11:22):
we have in the building. Soyeah, I think a lot of people
when he left understood it right. That was a lot of money. Atlanta
has a team that's basically ready towin. They just need a quarterback.
He's a fantastic quarterback when he's healthy. It kind of made sense, but
it is weird because for the firsttime in a long time, the Vikings
have uncertainty a quarterback. So we'llsee what Sam Darnold can bring. Have
(11:43):
you had a chance to meet himyet? Have you talked to him?
What have you learned about Sam?I talked to him briefly today and I've
actually met him in the past.We both trained out in Phoenix or this
was a couple of years ago.But seems like a great dude. I
think we're gonna play some golf onFriday, so yeah, it'll be nice
to just kind of get to knowhim more, but he seems like a
great guy. Excited to have himback. There. Are you a good
golfer? H No, definitely notimproving slowly, but I would not consider
(12:07):
myself a good golfer. It soundslike almost every professional athlete that I've talked
to that golf's uh. They allare huge hitters off the tee and then
struggle with the short games That prettymuch sum up you. Unfortunately, not
the opposite. Yeah, my myapproach shots have been really solid. That's
that's kind of where I take mypride. But I can't figure out my
driver to save my life. Igot a big old slice, but you
(12:28):
can hammer it though, obviously rightif I get a hold of it,
it's great. Is great, hitit, hit it straight. That's that's
the issue. So can you pottgood enough? I mean yeah, yeah,
So so give me give me thethe guys that you've golfed with on
the team. Who's the best andwho's the worst? I mean, feeling
far and away, feeling unreal.Man, that's tough. Garrett Bradbury,
(12:50):
I'll tell you what is a stick? When he's on, he can he
can play well worst, that's tough. I kind of feel like we're all
in this similar range of like it'sa typical somewhere between eighty five and ninety
five, and it's who's on andwho's off. I've gone out with a
couple of guys, you know, only Udo, who's not here anymore.
(13:11):
And I tried to get him intogolf and we went to the driving range
and he'd send me videos of hisswing. I'm like, I'm glad you're
hit man, but maybe it's timefor lessons, you know. So it
just it's Charles Barkley kind of swing. Yeah it is. Yeah, He's
just a big ball of muscle andso that rotation aspect is tough, and
yeah, yeah, I wanted himto play so bad, and you'd send
(13:33):
me those videos. I'm like,oh man, we need lessons first.
Do you find Do you think you'rejust a competitive dude? In general?
A lot of the guys that I'vemet over the years doing this job,
Mark Parrish, who's a former NHLAll Stars. The example I'm thinking about
in my head specifically is competitive atdarts, at shuffle board, at golf,
Like he just likes to compete andhe's not a jerk. About it,
(13:54):
right, He's not doesn't have anego, he just likes to win.
Do you have that? Do youthink a lot of pro athletes just
have that winning mentality? Absolutely?I think that's a huge part of being
an athlete. I mean, anytimewe're hanging out outside of the building,
it's doing something competitive, and itcan be something stupid like video games.
We play a lot of Katon onthe road. I don't know if you're
familiar with the board game Katon,of course, yeah, I mean so,
(14:18):
yeah, whatever we're doing, it'scompetitive. It's a competition and it
makes it a lot of fun too. Yeah. I know, back in
the day, the the Ben Lieber, Jared Allen, like Chad Greenway era,
I think they played a lot ofYachtzi and I think they played a
lot of Mario Karts. But nowit sounds like Catan is in the mix.
What video games are you guys competitiveabout. We've been playing a lot
of Apex Legends, which is abattle royale of sorts, and it's a
(14:43):
lot of fun. And yeah,we we work, you know, as
hard as we can to work asa team, and it typically doesn't go
well, but it is competitive forsure. I mean, we always find
a way, and I think Ithink it's cool for you guys too,
because, like now, almost everybodythat's still in professional sports grew up in
the video game generation. Right,If you go back like fifteen years ago,
the guys, the older guys inthe team had no interest in video
(15:07):
games, and the kids that werecoming up, the rookies, were you
know, into whatever it was atthe time. Sure, but now you
guys were all way post Nintendo age, right, you guys all grew up
I assume an Xbox in PlayStation.Yep, absolutely, So how weird is
it now when you run into somebodythat isn't a gamer on the team,
it is strange. And there's acouple guys and Brian O'Neil, great example,
didn't play video games growing up,and he finally got I think he's
(15:28):
got a PlayStation, and uh,he's like, I don't know if I'm
ever going to play this, andwe got him on the game and all
of a sudden he's he's all aboutit. So yeah, unfortunately it Yeah,
it is getting hooked for sure. You look forward to playing it when
you get home and I come homeand I say hi to my wife and
She's like, oh, how wasyour day and say it was good?
And yeah, I Michael play videogames like you were just talking with those
(15:48):
guys for four hours today. Soyeah, it's definitely something that you want
to keep under control. But it'sa lot of fun and spum playing with
those guys. You have kids yetor not? We got one on the
way on the way, yeah,Rat, thank you so much. When
is when does the baby do?June eleventh? June eleventh, so way
before the season. See, that'sgood timing it. Yeah, since you
golf you I assumed you watched theMasters yesterday? Absolutely what if Scheffler would
(16:11):
have left in the middle of theround, You gotta time it out better
if you're the Schefflers. But itsounds like you timed it perfectly. Yep.
I mean that's is that mini campish? Yeah? Yeah, that'll be
minni camp something you get a smallbreak from mini camp. That's actually even
better timing. You don't miss anyregular season games, get a little bit
of break from mini camp. Whata sweet, sweet deal for you?
All right? June eleventh, doyou know the gender yet? Do you
(16:32):
know the name? Boy? Boy? Jody? Know the name? You
don't have to say it if youdon't. We have an idea of what
the name is gonna be, butwe don't have anything for sure. So
I don't know why I'm a geekabout this, but I like that process.
Give me the the You don't haveto tell me the name again,
but give me the breakdown of howyou and your wife came to the the
name. We kind of had someparameters in terms of like kind of what
(16:52):
we wanted, more traditional, allthat, and then we actually used an
app and it's I can't remember whatit's like, maybe name or something generic,
and essentially you just swipe yes orno, and it's just constantly names
popping up, and then you canlook at your list and what my wife
and I have matched. And thenwe kind of went through that and interested
(17:14):
and narrated it down. That's cool. Well, so this is this is
so my nephew who's now twenty whatis he twenty three? This is pre
smartphone, pre app. So mybrother and his wife did that without an
app. They both like had tenThey both wrote there like ten top names
down and the only one that theyboth had on the list they just went
(17:37):
with because it was the only overlap. So I don't think either one of
them thought it was their favorite name, but it was both in their top
ten. They're like close enough,no argument, let's move on. That's
a good way. But that's evenmore like My guess is the app's probably
even finding some algorithm, like allright, Blake likes names that are kind
of like this, maybe one syllablename. I wonder if they're doing more
than just the yes or no.I definitely could see that, because towards
(17:59):
the end, it seems like, yeah, the names that I was getting
was certainly more on par with whatI was looking for and what she was
looking interesting. So when when mywife and I had our second we uh,
right before we figured out if itwas gonna be a boy or girl,
we had both names locked in andit ended up being a girl.
So we ended up naming the onethat we had agreed on. But the
(18:22):
mourning of the doctor's appointment where youfound out the gender we had both settled
on Gavin for boys. But forlike the week leading up to that,
I'm like, we're gonna make thiskid's snowboarder a snowboarder, and I'm gonna
call him the Gavelanche. And shehated that nickname so much that the morning
of that she's like, if it'sa boy, we're changing the name.
I'm like, what are you talkingabout. We've had this name locked in
(18:44):
for three months. She's like,I hate that nickname. You're gonna call
him the gavial Lanche and it's over. So my advice to you, this
is a long way of getting tothe advice if you really like a boy's
name, don't ruin it until thekid's named, because the wife absolutely has
the right to change your mind.In vito In, it's all it take.
Don't up with some stupid nickname likeI did, because I would have
cost uh. No. I wasn'tlike in love with that name, but
it was good enough where I waslike, that's the one. We're going
(19:07):
with that one. And then Isaid Gavalanche once, it once and it
was over. That's all I took. What are you excited about about being
a dad? I mean, thewhole thing I think, uh, the
cool thing about is we've got dadsin the old line room, and so
asking those guys questions, I mean, and they're one not even piece of
advice, but if they say whenhe's here, everything changes everything true,
(19:30):
and it's great. So I'm justlooking forward to him being here and uh
watching him grow, and you know, I think it's gonna be a lot
of fun. Yeah. Scheffler wasasked that question yesterday after the Masters,
and uh, somebody asked him, like, how quickly do you put a
plastic you know, golf club inhis or her hand? And he's and
he was talking about his nephew, how his nephew's like two, His dad
(19:52):
likes to mow the lawn, sothe two year old will follow behind with
a plastic lawn mower and just wantsto be exactly like dad. Right.
And Scotty's pointing this with my adviceto you as well as you just don't
know if your kids are gonna likethe same thing as you. Right.
I guess if you're gonna have aboy, probably gonna be a pretty big
kid. So your kid's probably gonnahave a chance to like basketball or football
or something like that. But evenif the kid ends up being what are
(20:15):
you six six or six sec.So even if the kid ends up being
six to six might not like footballbasketball. So that's the hardest thing is
knowing what you think they're gonna like, and then they absolutely like the opposite
thing, no doubt. I've beentrying to talk my girls into playing poker
their entire lives, and neither oneof them gives two s's about poker.
So I have I come home afterI get knocked out of a tournament,
(20:37):
I have nobody to talk to.They don't care at all. So anyway,
that's my advice is it's it's hardto let them choose, but that's
how it works. You got tochoose. I got to choose. When
did you choose football? Was itbased on your size or did you fall
in love with it way before yougot tall and big? I mean,
this just goes against everything you justsaid. But it didn't work out for
what your dad pushed you into it. Mom and mom and mom and dad.
(21:00):
I mean we watched football Saturday andSunday and whatever was on Friday.
Every single weekend it was on,and uh, I think that's part of
it. I'm I don't remember lifebefore I was watching football, sou So
they again, was your dad tallthough my dad was six is six three,
so I mean tall. Your momis your five ten, so it
was very tall for a Yeah, they're they're both big people, and uh
(21:21):
I was a big baby, asyou could guess, and so you know,
uh I came out and both myparents like up football football player right
away and uh so, yeah,I mean and I love it and I
always have and it's it's just alwaysbeen my thing. Did you dominate early
because of your size? Again? How much bigger were you, like in
middle school than the average kid?I was? I was a big kid.
(21:42):
You always had you already had theheight and the weight. Yeah.
I was skinny in high school, but prior to that, I mean,
I always played a line in Dline. I was always tall and prior
to high school, you know, had that had that weight that I hadn't
really shed off yet. Yeah, and then I got into high school and
got skinny and all that, andobviously no, I'm bigger and everything,
(22:03):
but uh no, I've always beenbigger than most and so, uh yeah,
I've always been in onl linement. All right, So how does this
work? Because a lot of timesin youth sports, the biggest and fastest
kid doesn't always necessarily have to besuper skilled because they're just man amongst boys.
When did that? Was it highschool or college where you started to
be like, Wow, I justcan't dominate based on my size anymore.
(22:25):
I have to actually have technique anddetail and all that kind of stuff.
What age did that start kicking in? That was definitely college for me.
I also grew up in Oregon, and this is no knocking any high school
organ football players out there, butnot the best competition. You know,
it's just not the biggest thing outthere. And you know, people love
football, but uh, it's notlike I grew up in Texas or California
(22:48):
or any of those kind of bigfootball. So what's the culture in Oregon?
Is there a sport that they kindof excel in at the high school
level or is it just kind ofall blah. It's there's just not a
ton of people there, and soyou're not you're not really getting uh you
know, you're not a sample size. Yeah, exactly. So I wouldn't
say the competition was anything too crazy. And then I got to Oregon State
(23:10):
and red shirted my first year, and you know, it was seriously a
huge adjustment. And yeah, that'skind of when I came to the realization
that you just can't manhandle people atthis level. So sure, So that
was that red shirt year, justa I need to work out and get
bigger and stronger and faster. Thatthat was that basically twelve months for absolutely.
Yeah. Yeah, who did youplay with? Anybody notable that you
(23:30):
overlapped with that Oregon State? Ihad Isaac Samalu who is a guard for
the Steelers, but he was ah, he left early, but he's a
junior and it felt like he wasa senior when I was a freshman.
And just kind of watching that guygo about his business, it taught me
a lot. And uh, youknow, having guys like that who you
know he was a pro before hegot to the pros. Yeah, and
(23:52):
it just kind of showed like, all right, this is kind of what
it takes. Well, we hada bunch of good, good football players.
I had just missed Sean Mannion bya year, but even watching him
on TV, it was clear thathe's a guy that prepared well and set
himself up for a good future. So so was it true that while he
was here he was basically a coachwith a clipboard. I mean he's a
coach now in Green Bay. Yeah, I mean he is just a guy
(24:15):
that loves football and loves watching football. Loves game planning, so he'll be
a coach at some point in ahigh level coach. I think he's I
think he's in Green Bay right nowas a coach already. Any idea what
he is? Is he just amy quarterbacks coaches quarterbacks or quarterbacks assistant offensive
analyst. I mean, I wouldn'tbe surprised if he's a head coach in
the future. He's just kind oflike that. So all right, since
I'm since I was born in nineteeneighty, I'm gonna ask you the geeky
(24:37):
Oregon question that you've probably been askeda thousand times. Have you ever been
to the Goony's House? And doyou go to that beach Astoria history at
Oregon. I grew up going theremy family. We didn't really fish or
anything, but we we'd go andthrough crab pots in the water and catch
dungeon his crabs. So yeah,I've definitely been to a story It's beautiful.
I'm worth going to, Like isit one of those if you're there
(25:00):
you might as well see it?But is it worth flying from Minneapolis to
go see? No? That partof Oregon. I love the Oregon Coast.
I'm super biasedo and so I tryto remember that. I mean,
it's it's beautiful. But if youpicture maybe like the coast of Ireland where
it's cold and windy, big beaches, that it's more comparable to that than
in California, California or wherever. So if I'm in a vacation in Oregon,
(25:23):
where do I go? That's tough. Bend orgon Central organ is awesome,
especially if you're around outdoorsman, they'vegot mountains. It's desert. Portland's
cool or the nice thing about Portlandis you're close to a lot of stuff.
So you got mount Hood over there. You can get to the coast
in an hour and a half. We've got rivers. You have casinos.
(25:45):
You got a casino on the wayto uh on the way to the coast
from Portland, you got a casino. We're casino. Yeah, talking,
you kind of can hit all whateveryou're looking for. You kind of hit
it all. You do you liketo gamble? And are you allowed to
answer that question? I know anymorehow that works. I am allowed to
gamble very occasionally. You know.We go to Vegas at the end of
(26:07):
the year with the old line,So that's a bunch of fun. Al
right on, what do you again? What do you guys like to do
when you're there? Uh, goto a show, go to a concert,
eat good food, gamble, youknow, typical Vegas things. It's
a good time. So yeah,I was just there with the show Wednesday
through Saturday. I think I've beento Vegas something like fifty times in my
life and I have still never beenpropositioned by a prostitute. Yeah. That's
(26:30):
good, and it's well, Iget I No, I'm gonna say no.
I just I'm just offended that Ijust am that kind of guy that
they just are never gonna ask.I'm like, go for fifty. That's
great, I know it is.It's good. Again. I've always said
if I ever get asked, Imight just like say thank you and tip
them as I'm walking away, like, thank you so much for finally breaking
(26:51):
the streak. You know, gogo have fun. Here's here's twenty four
at the Las Vegas prostitutes listening tothis right now, we're going to figure
out what you look like. Nosong back, It's easy. Tip right,
Oh, I don't know. Maybeagain. I play cards and I
like to spend a lot of timein my room, just getting work done.
So I'm a pretty lame Vegas guy. So maybe I'm just not at
the right spots. I don't goto the bars. I'm not walking through
the slots at two o'clock in themorning, right, So it's I'm not
(27:12):
probably in the hot spots, butI still am something like oh for fifty
anyway, I hear that devastation right, Oh man? All right, So
what happens for you between now andmini campus? You guys have voluntary workouts
now? So are you at thefacility the last couple of days or what
today was day number one? Today? It was day number one? Ota
(27:33):
you were there? Yep, Iwas there. So what happened today?
We had a team meeting. KOkind of ran down expectations and what we're
kind of looking for and you knowwhat we're looking to improve on, talk
about the culture all that stuff.Yeah, you got a run, a
lift, and then a couple hoursof position meeting. So nothing too crazy.
(27:53):
But is this the day that peoplerealize they aren't in good enough shape?
You'd be surprised. I think alot of guys. You know,
you're a pro, and so itis your job to from when the season
ends to now you got to figureout if you need to work out or
do whatever you need to do tokind of get right. And uh,
I would, I would. Iwould say everyone did pretty well. So
how much time did you slack whenit comes to eating healthy and working out
(28:17):
after the season ended? After thefinal game? Did you give yourself a
week to just kind of enjoyed orI gave myself a couple of weeks.
A couple of weeks, yeah, yeah, so what give me? Give
me give me a glimpse of thosetwo weeks. What did you do?
Uh, drink a lot of soda, go, I'm a big soda guy.
Played some video games late on thecouch out of couch time. Yeah,
a lot of couch time. Andit's funny because you know, day
(28:37):
one of that, you're like, yes, I've been looking forward to this,
and by day three I feel likea piece of craft boring. What
am I doing? Yeah? Butyou want to let your body kind of
recover and rest, and so I'dfind ways to make myself busy, do
stuff around the house, whatever.Yeah, and then I get I go
down to Arizona for the offseason. So, uh, I think we left
(28:57):
two weeks after the season end.Did we drove and kind of get things
started down there? Oh? Youdrove to Arizona. Yep, me and
my wife we drove. Why driveinstead of fly? You guys like road
tripping or is there a specific reason? It just doesn't bother us. We
also have dogs. What kind ofdogs? Little French bullets? Oh too,
Yeah, little Frenchies. Now we'retalking. I got two Frenchies as
well, and I had a Frenchbulldog for ten years. She died like
(29:19):
two years ago. So now thisis technically our second and third Frenchies.
Yep, Frenchies are the best best. So is part of the reason why
you drive them, because I've neverwe haven't flown with our Frenchies, but
I've heard they're terrible flyers because ofall their breathing issues. Is that even
remotely true or not? So we'veflown with them before and it's always gone
well. The little one the issueis she doesn't like being in the crater.
(29:41):
You know, you have to havethem kind of bundled up in a
little carry on thing, and soshe lets you know, and uh,
that's enough to make my wife andI not want to fly with her ever.
Again, it's just kind of youknow, crying baby, you haven't
expence. It's like yeah, butwith the dog people are kind of look
at you here and like what arewe doing? So yeah, and we
(30:02):
don't mind the drive. I mean, as long as there's good weather,
we go through it. So howdo they do in the car? Oh?
Fine, just to sleep the wholetime. The Frenchies are so lazy
freaking love them, man, Yeah, they must have been loving that two
weeks of nothingness right on the couch. That's that's that's French bulldog off season
right there, is just doing nothing. Older yours, so the older one
(30:22):
is four and the younger one isgoing to be she's going to be two
in October or something like that.I'm not going with. Yeah. Mine
just turned too, so they stillhave all that puppy energy. They still
have a probably too much energy.Yeah, there's a lot of energy.
Yeah, for sure. I likewhen they hit about four or five and
they start really getting lazy, justcouch potato for We almost got English bulldogs
(30:45):
because I've heard they're very similar, just bigger and lazier. Yeah. Yeah,
but then you have, like I'veheard a lot of gas issues with
the English bulldog. You don't havegas with yours, no, man,
it is the worst gas you've eversmoked. Really, yeah, unfortunate man,
did not know. Do you feedhim like a normal dog food or
do you do like the all naturalstuff? Maybe it's the diet they're spoiled
(31:06):
where they get the all natural stuff. See, that's gotta be it.
Yeah, you're feeding them the goodstuff. Yeah, all right, well
it's it's it's good to hear thatyou got. You had a solid off
season. It sounds like it soundslike you're pumped for a new quarterback,
not again, not anti Kirk, but just to maybe somebody new. We'll
see what happens with Sam Darnold, see what happens in the draft. Dude,
congrats on the off season, Congratson the career so far. You're
off to a good start with theVikings. Congrats on the baby as well.
(31:29):
Man than you so fantastic. Iappreciate everybody. Give it up Randell
from the Minnesota Vikings. He's gonnabe sticking around for a couple of minutes
here until about what eight or so, give or take right, So if
you want to come say hi andhave him sign something, or hang out
or ask him a question. Feelfree to come say hud to Blake.
He seems harmless and he likes Frenchbulldogs. Blake Brandell everybody the Minnesota Vikings.
All right, mama, jeez, once again, thank you guys so
(31:51):
much for coming out here with MillerLyning the Minnesota Vikings. We got our
draft bar tour going on here asthe big Draft is coming up on Thursday
next week, and I got sodamn excited, except for the fact that
it didn't text me back. EversonGriffin is our guest, ladies and gentlemen,
(32:15):
Big Ev. How are you, buddy. I'm doing well, man,
I'm doing well. Can't you seeyou? Look at me? Yeah,
and look at you. I'll playnow. I'm doing well. I'm
doing well, But you didn't sayI was doing okay, now you're doing
I'm doing well. I'm doing reallygood. Building a new house, hanging
out with the kids, taking kidsin sports, same old just a different
(32:37):
day. Yeah. One of thesports for the boys, baseball, I
mean my little one baseball, basketball, my oldest football, basketball, my
middle child football, basketball, soccer, so soccer for all three, baseball
for my little one in basketball andfootball for all of them. Oh good?
(32:58):
I mean, you know, soall of those sports are affordable,
No hell of eve. And you'rebuilding a new house, you're never talking
that h So you're you're like boxingstuff up, getting stuff ready for the
move. And it's possibly the worstjob ever because you know you're gonna box
(33:19):
stuff up and put it in aroom in a new house and then never
open up the damn box. Yeah. What we did today we really try
to declutter and get like really gothrough piece by piece and say we're gonna
keep this, we're gonna use this. And it was a long process.
I was up since like seven o'clockand I just got done like five o'clock.
(33:39):
Nice. So working, putting init, Yeah, putting in the
work. That's good, core work, you know, good for your care.
It's not, it's not. Idon't like doing that type of work.
I know that we have a lotof people that are really wondering a
question that everybody's wondering is who isyour favorite Canadian? Your favorite Canadian?
(34:04):
It's been a while Sin's been onthis dumb show. No I love it.
Who is your favorite Canadian entertainer? Is it Ryan Gosling? Who was
on Saturday Night a lot of thislast week. That was a great show.
One of my favorites. Jim Carrey, Can't go wrong, Rachel McAdams,
who seth Brogan Bieber. I heardsomeone throw out there. I had
(34:27):
to go with or Ryan Reynolds.Where where the name that? Again?
I had to go with Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey, yeah, yeah,
oh yeah, dumb and dumber.Oh my gosh. The mask, the
mask, like the mask. That'slike one of my top top five movies,
top no. Top ten movies. It was in the height of his
(34:49):
career. It was awesome. Itwas Cameron Diaz who was in that.
That's why I was fan little SoI have another stupid question for you and
then we'll get to some good stuffhere. But uh. Harrison Ford credits
(35:09):
Jimmy Buffett for his infectious coolness forinspiring him to get his left ear pierced.
They apparently went out and had alunch, a little boozy lunch,
and Jimmy Buffett was just like oozingof cool, had an ear ring,
and and then Harrison Ford said, that's it. I'm Indiana Jones getting one
(35:30):
right. Damn. Now, isthere any has there ever been anything that
a teammate did that wouldn't like purchasesomething or was into something that you weren't
and then went, well, thatguy's too cool. I gotta get that.
You know, beat it beat anNFL. As long as I've been
in the NFL, it was alltypes of where they say, s hi
t going on. But you know, everybody have their own, you know,
(35:53):
things that they like. But youknow, getting left earth piers that
ain't too bad. I've been havingmy left earth pier since I was kindergarten.
So I wanted to be like Jordan'sreally yeah, kindergarten five years old?
Yeah, yeah, tend to talkyour mom and do it or did
you just oh you didn't do theice cuban the potato thing, did you?
(36:14):
No? No, we went toClaire's. Oh yeah, yeah,
just went to the mall and justa little fifth grade fifth grade. I
got a picture was sitting in sittingnext to this little white girl with the
Jordan nine Z one with one ear. I wish I had the picture on
me. Oh my god. Okay, Uh, we got to ask a
(36:35):
little bit about the fact that whenyou got drafted and uh, what is
that draft process? Like what wasthe experience for you as we're leading.
You know, I was supposed togo higher in the draft. So I
really hate the song that song thatjust came out by jay Z. I'm
from New York. They played itover and over and over again, and
(36:58):
I'm sitting there and I dropped tothe fourth round. I was like,
you know what, I'm a I'ma I hate this all. So that's
one of my But you know,it's a fun experience. You know,
it's the time of your life. You have to enjoy every moment and you
really have to just you know, whatever you did in college, you know,
you just just let the tape talkfor itself. And it was a
fun experience. You know, itwas fun. Eighty five and a half
(37:21):
career sacks, that's in one hundredand seventy games, second team All Pro,
and twenty seventeen four time Pro bowler. Am I missing anything else?
No, just a crazy month onthe field. Yeah, in a sexy
bitch. So you got there thesecond year of Brett Farv experience, Yes,
(37:46):
and obviously the two thousand and ninething didn't really go so well.
But then so when I got therein twenty ten and they went to the
NFC Championship. I heard them allabout the playoff money and oh, you
earn more money when you gonna playit. I'm like, ooh, I'm
going to the Viking. If youabout to go to the ENDFY Championship game
(38:06):
again. That's when. That's whenMinneapolis was popping Downtown seven. You had
the Room, the other Club, the Red Room that had like I forgot
all the clubs that they were popping. But my favorite thing was seeing Brett
Farv and every morning he was likefive blockers down from me, and I
used to walk in the locker roomevery single day and go Brett FO,
(38:29):
Brett FO. And he had hislittle short song, same shirt hat,
you know, dude, were thesame thing every day. And then that
year I think we went three andthirteen or we had a terrible year.
Yeah, it was a tough year. But did you get the Brett favor
ass slab because he's known for it. I don't know. No, I
don't remember, no, No,that was that would have been a memorable
(38:52):
moment. I would remember that.Well, you got to play, you're
playing with like Jared Allen and Iwas with Jared. I was with Jared
when I came into an NFL.My d line room was Jared Allen,
Kevin Williams, Pat Williams, JamieMitchell, Brian Robinson, Fred Evans,
Detroit Guy on Jess it was itwas wild? Yeah, Ray Edwards,
(39:17):
could you understand a word that?Pat? Crazy? So what do you
think I mean? I mean, obviously you still follow the Vikings and yeah,
anything like that. What do youthink the Tequasy and koc should do
(39:39):
when we get this eleventh pick andthe twenty third pick, are you in
favor of jumping up or are youin favor like sitting back and maybe a
DT could be drafted there. WhenI was really looking at it, a
lot of people asked me because Iplayed for so long, a lot of
people ask me what they're gonna do. I said, the only way they
was gonna keep Kirk Cousins was ifhe he was gonna come for a bargain.
(40:00):
They were gonna keep him if youasks for a lot of money.
And it would have been good ifthey could have kept them for a lower
cost, but he wanted more money, and and it would have been good
to like go up two picks anddraft a quarterback and have groom them.
But at this moment, I reallythink they you know, do you go
(40:21):
for your guy or do you sitback and wait and see how the draft
play out. I think it's allabout being aggressive. You know, if
you got a guy that you loveand you watch his tape over and over
again, it's not about the combinethrowing the ball to air. You damn
there throwing the ball to air.Anybody. I could go out there and
throw a fade route in a nineround and a coach corner still run your
(40:44):
four four six. I'd do allthat four four six. Yeah, it's
all about It's all about the tape, right, And they watched hundreds of
hours of tapes on these guys.So I think you just go with your
gut and and you just trusted. And I think they got the right people
there making the right decisions, makingthe right calls to do the right things.
(41:05):
And I think they gotta I don'tknow what they're gonna do. Honestly,
Yes, it's hard, but thisis maybe one of the more interesting
draft drafts we have had a longtime ever Because with Rick Spielmy, he
always said back collected more third, fourth, fifth round picks. These guys
they went up and got another firstround pick, and to see to be
more aggressive, to trade up,to sit back. You know, they
(41:28):
really got the possibilities to do anything. Yeah, they always talked about being
flexible. Yes with this draft, yeah, in this particular draft here,
ev what else is going on foryou? Are you binging television shows?
I suppose not when you know I'vebeen watching you. I've been watching BMF.
What it's a really it's kind ofa hood show on Stars, Yeah,
(41:53):
by fifty cents called BMF or RaisingKine. Yeah, this show like
that. But no, really, just trying to get out this house.
We got to move out the currenthouse. Were in June fourteenth, and
then we don't move into our newhouse until August fifth. So doing all
the furniture shopping, like designers, meeting with the pool people, meeting with
(42:14):
the last kight people. Do youlike that stuff? No? No,
do I like that shit? Liketo just stay out of it completely.
Yeah, but that shit expensive.I didn't know building house is gonna be
this goddamn expensive. But it's fun. It's for the kids. The kids
will have a neighborhood. Right now, we live on six and a half
(42:34):
acres with no with no neighbors. It's all old folks. So the kids
will have a neighborhood to go ridebikes, to go talk to friends and
go over to friends house, friendscome over to our house. So it's
gonna be a new experience for thekids. And I think it'd be good
for them safe to shay that youare staying here then obviously, yeah,
and you were always talking about doingthat because you guys love being here.
(42:55):
Yeah, and obviously Tiff being fromhere. So yeah, it makes sense.
But so there's no chance you're gonnado like you're gonna be snowbirds.
You get a place down Avenue. It doesn't make sense, it doesn't.
It doesn't make sense. We wantto we want to be there enough to
get another house, right, youknow that's how. That's how like,
well, you've got to pay twoproperty tax is, pay insurance on the
(43:17):
house, do all that. Itdoesn't make sense today. Yeah, that
doesn't make Well. We love itthat you're staying here, buddy. I
honestly this has been as always themost fun hanging out with you. Buddy.
You are the best ever. Thankyou Everson Griffin, Ladies and gentlemen,
big f Yeah, buddy, let'sget Ezra up over here. You
(43:44):
want to hang out you, Oh, you don't remember this. When we
were doing Vikings Country, you wouldalways talk about how you wanted to keep
doing this and that at some pointyou were gonna take my job. Nah.
So I think we get Ezra overhere, you can help me out
here. Yeah, that's what's goingon, buddy boy, have a seat
(44:05):
right over here at Jeff will handyou the headset. You will often see
this beautiful man singing. How manynational anthems have you sung at different events?
About one hundred? About one hundred. I'm one of the old guys,
so yeah, I've been. Yeah, I was asking you off air,
(44:29):
but I kind of wanted to knowbecause you always have the beads,
and I was wondering if they werethey're like some kind of meaning to the
beads, or if they were justlike they went well with these shoes.
No, I'm from Hawaii, sothese are Aloha beads. So my mom
and I make them, and sowhat we do is I wear them,
(44:50):
and wherever I travel, I givethem to people. You know, and
so if they ask for it givesyou, It brings you luck, It
brings you aloha. It brings youa lot of you know, prosperity and
and hopefully you know riches. Sowho's your favorite Canadian entertainer? Oh?
My favorite Canadian? Yeah? Ohman, Ryan Reynolds has got to be
(45:12):
my favorite. Yeah. It wasawesome. But you know what, I'm
a I'm a singer, so I'myou know, I was on the Voice.
He's the fourteen of the Voice.Yeah, after football and so and
I you know, I love Ilove powerful singers and stuff. So I
you know, Celindion. I mean, oh, you can't. I'm fifty
five years old, so I sortof kind of grew up in the eighties
and the nineties and stuff like that. Oh, the Titanic movie comes out,
You're just like that movie, isn'tthat great? Oh my god?
(45:37):
Except for the ending though, comeon, there was room for two of
them on them the door, right, I mean I thought you meant the
Iceberg part. We knew how Iwas gonna end when it started. I
mean, we all know the story, but I'm just talking about the movie
itself. When you were on theVoice, you were on team Blake.
Yeah, I was, you know, in my country background, I've run
(46:00):
into Blake Shelton a lot. Yeah, and Blake is always a blast.
Yeah. What was that experience like, because the dude's sincere, but he's
he's half drunk most of the time, So you want the truth. Yes,
you know, people think you sortof kind of hang out with them
the whole time that you're there, right, You actually don't. I mean,
(46:21):
you don't really hang out with them. I probably got maybe about two
hours of you know, time withthe celebrities with Blake Shelton, Yeah,
you know, and those are thetimes where they film and they put it
onto it. But you spend mostof your time with your voice coaches learning
the songs that they give you,and they it's one of those things where
they would give you songs that youdon't know, so you have like a
(46:44):
whole twenty four hours toy like sortof learned this brand new songs. And
for some damn reason, they keptgiving me like you know, leanne rhymes
and all these high like you know, I mean, I have a high
voice. But it's one of thosethings where I just I thought they wanted
me to fail. I think that'swhat they wanted me to do, right,
They wanted me to fail and stuff. So but I always came off,
you know, and I and Idid well. So so now was
(47:05):
it nine years, nine years, nine years in the NFL? Ten years
for you? Twelve twelve? Wellsorry correct, sorry of Hardiers twelve,
you were like twenty ten, right, yeah, twenty ten, that's right.
Two thousand and we were talking aboutI thought the Bees were ninety was
My mind went to a whole differentarea when he said bees. I was
(47:28):
like, my mind is switched.I'm just whatever you do at your own
house is fine. We were talkingabout the defensive line room that you guys
had when you came through. Butoh, come on, let's talk about
(47:50):
that, I mean seriously. Yeah, because our facility is back in the
old. Oh they were so nice, are you? But you guys,
but you guys are I went apark to right, Yeah, we were
in Winnipark, winn Park. Westarted winn Park, Okay, but you
guys upgraded. So I played therefrom ninety two to ninety seven, and
then they sort of kind of upgraded. They did, like a remodel and
(48:12):
stuff to the whole place. Yeah. So but we had, like,
you know, yeah, it waswhat they have now. They had a
juice bar. You guys have youknow, they have a We didn't have
a juice bar. Like we didn'thave you know all that's the thing that
we had to go out and grabour lunches, right, I mean,
it was just it was just itwas a different it was a different time
in different eras we had. Youguys had a juice bar. But you
(48:35):
know, life changes, you know, and things as you evolved, right,
like you age good, aged great? This guy right here, I
don't know so much. You know, I'm thirty six. Oh gosh,
you're young man. I'm fifty five. So yeah, it's sort of like
fifty one, but it's fifty oneyears of radio. It's a hard life
(48:57):
to live. You guys sit thereand talk about all your old injuries,
cold tubs and stuff and your juices. I never had surgery in my twelve
years of playing. You never did, not one surgery really, not even
a scope scope, wow, sane. Nothing. I had shoulders, don't
knees, you know, jacked upfingers, got my pinkies, my pinkies.
(49:20):
I had I think like twelve orsomething like that, twelve scope like
a lot of yeah, yeah, stuff like that. Yeah, nothing like
the only major surgery I had wasI blew up my achilles, my left
you know, my left achilles. So that's about it. And but back
in the old days where they tooka lot longer, the cast was like
up to your like your chest, yeah, like no, literally it was
like all the way up to yourchest. And now they just put you
(49:43):
in a boot. Right, It'sjust it's crazy. But remember anology the
technology and oh my gosh, ithas comes run away because achilles. Back
when you played, it was likethe end of your career. Probably you
can't move no more is done. Now it's like you blought your you go
blow at your achilles and you getpaid a hundred and seventy only dollars.
Right, well, well I can't. I'm just saying, I'm just saying
(50:10):
that's wow. But I also haduh you know Dan BURLETTI right, yeah,
that he was like he was hewas absolutely amazing man. He had
me, He came, he hadme coming back in like eight months.
And I think when you blew outyour achilles back then it was I think
it was like a fourteen to fifteenmonths sort of surgery. But he was
absolutely made. He had me likepushing golf courts up the hill and doing
(50:34):
all this circus to lay stuff.I have no idea, but it's frank
right, Yeah, I definitely youjust you know, mister loha, you
went to Oregon State University. Idid? I did? And you were
you were in a frat? Ohdid you you were? I was at
Yeah, a couple of frat boys. Yeah, how do you know?
Are you? Were? You ina frat? I got kicked out of
(50:57):
college. Oh okay. I wasthere for a year and a half man
Kato State and they said we don'twant you back. We went back.
I'm in fire side Oh okay, okay, I'm in side the pike.
Yeah yeah, what is that? What is that lifestyle? Like as a
football player as well? So I'mguessing with the frat the football And then
did you guys know where all theclassrooms were? Yeah? I joined I
(51:22):
joined a fraternity. I got it, I got kicked out. I joined
a fraternity to like to escalate howhard our party? So I went from
partying hard to party in the extreme? Yeah exactly, like it was an
extreme party. And at that point, well they asked me to join,
and it was like, you wantto be a part of our frat?
I said, yeah, so Ididn't have to go through all the you
(51:44):
know, all the initiation stuff. So I did all that just fun.
I didn't have to do that.So so now Eva has been on this
show so many times, and well, god, one year we had Christmas
songs and we were doing, oh, let's do a Christmas song, which
but he's not a professional, andI talked right up until the professionals start
(52:06):
not I haven't went on you know, I haven't won my Grammy yet,
so I'm not a professional. Howlong have you been singing? Though?
When? When? What was thething that went? Man? I got
to be a part of this, you know what I'm uh. I started
singing when I was five years old. But I guess it was in college
where Gary Paynton used to singer inthe like in the locker rooms and like
everywhere, and he's like, won'tyou sing one of you gotta know who
(52:29):
Gary Payne is, right, thebasketball player. So he's like, why
don't you sing one of the games? Is you know, one of the
for the basketball team? And Iwas like, well, if you gave
me the job, I'll do it. And it's first, you know,
he had to pull there, sohe said you're on for this Friday,
And I tell you, it waslike one of the hardest thing I ever
did in my life because number one, the national anthems one of the hardest
songs to sing. And then youknow, being the man at Oregon State,
(52:52):
right, no one would ever expectme to go and sing the national
anthems. So when they announced myname, you it was like this,
people were talking and stuff. Butthen when when they announced my name,
it was like a pin drop. You could hear a pin drop because people
were like huh. And that's wherethe fear kicked in. Like when leg
started shaking, it was like itwas crazy and I was like, what
(53:13):
in the target then? But Igot that first, no doubt. And
you can't start high, not withthe national anthem you have you have to
pay anything. You got to startlow then you can build it up.
And so not like Evan College. You gotta pace yourself. Yeah, I
was an ultimate animal. Nobody wentharder to meet him, and I wore
(53:34):
that with striving and I still wentout there on the ball. Baby.
Yeah. Yeah. We have someepics parties. We had some epic you
know, fraternity parties for State becauseit was like seventy percent Greek. So
in the you know, in Corvallis, in the middle of no you know,
in the Oregons. Yeah, Californiawas white. But so I was
(53:59):
gonna ask him this same question, what would you say when the draft comes
up on Thursday night? What wouldyou like to see or what do you
think that the Vikings will do well? You know eleven in the twenty three.
I think with free agency and stuff, I think we did we did
good, we did well. Forme, what I would love to see
and I think a lot of uh, you know, Minnesota fans would love
(54:22):
to see is us getting a quarterback? Yeah, you know, getting a
good quarterback. It's someone that willSo that's sort of like what I would
love to see Bonnicks. I mean, people, you know, they don't
like Bonicks, But for me andstuff, I think you would fit well
with our scheme, sure, withour you know, and you don't you
wouldn't have to move up for him, Yeah, you don't have to sell
them exactly. He's in that secondtier, right, he's not in that
(54:44):
first tier. But again, youknow, like, yeah, we all
have different you know, but that'swhat I'm just saying that So you know,
but we all have our But ifwe can get a quarterback, I
think would make a lot of Minnesotafans happy. Yeah, but I say,
you get a quarterback, but atwhat expense? You know, Yeah,
you have to he got to bethe guy get two first round picks.
(55:07):
You have to be the guy.You got to come in and be
the guy off the top, youknow. But if you get bo Nicks,
we don't have to be You don'thave to give up those two ticks.
You don't need a process. Wedon't have to be like yeah,
yeah, you don't like yeah,I don't know. You don't need the
guy. He just but to ifyou give him up to two first round
(55:27):
picks, the guy got to comein. He's the guy. I would
agree with that. Let's go tothe other side of the ball because I'm
really interested now. I want tohear you guys both play defensive course,
uh B flowed and what Brian Floreswas able to do with the team last
year, which I mean there wasinjuries, there were some spots that you're
like, I don't know. Theycertainly were a little weak the year before,
(55:51):
and then all of a sudden itkicked in probably about what Week four,
Week five, We're all so youcould you could see guys were figuring
out what exactly he wanted out ofthem. You first, what did you
see and what do you think? You know? I feel like all defensive
defensive coordinators they do a good jobof using the players they have. They
(56:13):
have a scheme they run, butsometimes they diverge from that scheme to make
the best play calls for the playersthey have. I think you put all
the players in the correct positions andmade all the right calls in this offseason.
I feel like they've done good withgetting the new defensive end guy.
Oh yeah, Greenland, Greenland,Yeah, Gar Yeah. Having the nil
(56:36):
goal was tough. The Neil probablywant a little bit more money because he
felt like Minnesota Vikas owe him something. But I feel like they've done a
good job now. I feel likethey've seen in the NFL, the hardest
position to play, in my opinion, is cornerback. Cornerback. Yeah,
so I feel like you gotta goout, go out and get a rookie
cornerback or you go make trays inthe draft to get a betch And that's
(57:00):
really good because you need a solidnumber one cornerback and the two to have
a really good defense because in thisgame is the ball passing. You know,
teams they run the ball, butteams want to look pretty passing the
ball. So I think they dida very good job after collecting, you
know, the people they need andgathering the you know, the lineman and
(57:22):
and linebackers and the defensive ends andstuff like that that they did. But
you know, I feel like theyneed a cornerback. But Flora, he
has done an amazing job. Yeahwhat he said, Yeah, all of
the things, I'm just gonna mirrorwhat he says. But exactly he's right,
definitely right well in the in themoves that they made in the offseason,
(57:44):
you feel as a Vikings fan andyou guys as former players, that
Brian Flores wants this guy. It'sprobably gonna work, you know. So
you got a lot of trust inhim, and got a lot of trust
in of course Koc that he's gonnapick the right quarterback that's gonna fit his
system, him and everything. Ladiesand gentlemen as were an ev right here.
(58:06):
Thank you guys so much for comingout. Appreciate it. We got
some dumb prizes. We're gonna giveaway with more stupid games to play,
and that wheel is done. Ohit's still gone, all right, so
help yourself the wheel. Thank youguys again, really appreciate it, all
right. Helloha, all right again, ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much
for coming out here with Miller Ltein Minnesota, Vikings. We got a
(58:29):
big draft that's coming up here onThursday next week, and we have a
great time going to our bar toursall over the metro. Here here we
are in Cologne at the two twelveTavern, and our very special guests,
ladies and gentlemen, don Terrius Thomas, number fifty four is our linebacker let's
(58:53):
see here. Drafted in the secondround, right, yes, yeah,
okay, and played at Alburt,Yes, Vikings two thousand and four till
two thousand and seven, right thosefour seasons four or five, seven,
eight, because that's the yeah twothousand and eight, okay, okay,
Yeah, I was bos season withthe Vikings five, five, five.
(59:15):
I don't want to change on that. Oh many, every season counts,
trust me. Oh yeah, soyou were there when when they brought Jared
Ellen in. Yes, yeah, yeah, you actually did the same draft
class too, it. Oh,no, kid, he got dropped to
k C and I got dropped tothe Vikings. Yeah, okay, all
right, yeah yeah, good dude, Yeah, great, great guy,
(59:36):
funny. Oh my gosh. Yeah, such a character. Hold on tight
with that guy. Right. We'regoing to get into some other characters as
well. And we also asked stupidquestions. How do you feel about women
that are adults that have dolls? To have doll Yeah, like if you
were gonna go over to a woman'shouse and she had a wall of dolls
(59:59):
literally, uh huh, would yourun the hell out? Because I know
I would. I know I wouldbe concerned. Hopefully she has a little
girl and maybe that's there, that'sa daughter. Now this is uh,
this is Emma Roberts. She hasno kids and I love her. She's
a great actress. I would belike, this is awesome. I'm going
(01:00:22):
home with Emma Roberts and I seethe doll wall and I'd be like,
hell, it'll be But you know, some people could have, you know,
get dolls and you know have specialcollections of them and antique and you
know they get a lot of moneyfor them, so you never know,
but you know it's something I'd belike kind of wary about but you know,
well, here's the follow up tothat, because she says that she's
(01:00:45):
hoping every night that they will actuallywake up. Oh no, and she
wants them to wake her up.No, it's a dream of hers.
Hey, she can wake up byherself. I wouldn't be there while you
were with the Vikes shot in thatspread. I mean, obviously, Jared,
(01:01:06):
we talked about Steve Hutchinson came inthe poison Pill himself the angriest man
in the locker room. Yeah, but I mean he was cool man,
Steve Hutchinson, right, yeah, yeah, hut, like he never like
had any issue with us. Iwould say I was blessed and fortunate to
be a part of a team whereeverybody like acted as a team and we
(01:01:28):
would know had a tight brotherhood. It wasn't no b for any type of
real FRAP. I never witnessed thatexperience that and that's fortunate because a lot
of teams you don't have that. You know, when I went to Sant
fran and you know, play alittle bit in San Diego, you kind
of see like, you know, people kind of want to do their own
thing. But with the Vikings. It was. It was all family.
(01:01:49):
It was all all in. Sowhen you're when you're practice and we're gonna
run uh a stunt, we wantyou to go in and then you gotta
go into Hutches's home. Oh yeah, you think about it. You know
what's coming up. You better comein ready. And you know you're not
gonna come in that tip to himbecause you know he's gonna get laid one
on you. And you're a goodsize man. I mean you're a big
(01:02:09):
dude. I've never seen a guywith a bigger neck than Hutch Yeah,
dumb boy, they had different breed. He's a Hall of Famer for a
reason. Put it like that.Yeah, yeah, absolutely. What was
that wine Backer room like? BecauseBen Lieber comes in? Uh, you
were there when Greenway came in?H E. J. Henderson. Who
(01:02:31):
was the biggest pain in the ass. I'm guessing it's Leber right, No,
man. Once again, it waslike our line Reckerd room was like
you know type we was closed.I mean we used to like get have
dinners together like okay, like youknow, kind of a bonding thing where
you know, we somebody made Likethe first night I remember it was at
my house and you know, comeover, you know, half fool,
(01:02:51):
just just just you know what I'msaying, bun and talking and so you
know, because when we was outthere on that field, you know,
it's all of us, you know, against them, but you know there
was no pain. E J.E J was a tricks there. Really.
Ej is so quiet, so calm, but he's he's kind of a
tricks that jokes that you'd be like, all right. He likes to wrestle.
(01:03:13):
I remember when we was in campinghim and Fallwell, we had had
a night off and him and Follwellcame back and you remember Heath Fallwell,
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, great guy. They was wrestling in our
room and tour they broke broke mylaptop. Oh yes, and I remember
I was like, come on man, how I'm I watch because that's that's
(01:03:36):
how we were at that time.We get load off film up on the
laptops and yeah, they was like, oh my bad, of course,
but it was them two was kindof due another strange one for you here.
Do you know any shepherds shepherd peoplestill shepherd? I'm not sure if
they do. No, I thinkthey have sheep, but yeah, I
(01:03:58):
don't know if that they roam.I don't. I don't think I you
know, came across a shepherd.Where I'm going with this is that apparently
there was a story in a WallStreet journal that talked about how a lot
of shepherds use axe body spray tomake sure to prevent the male sheep from
fighting because the smell is so strongthat it turns them off. Hmmm.
(01:04:20):
It felt like me in college whenI was wearing masks, right, but
it was with the ladies. Iwas like, yeah, that kind of
go against the ladies, right.Oh, no, that's interesting. If
it works, it works. Butyou know, yeah, I don't know
what to say about now do youhave like a cologne or something like that,
because I know there's a bunch ofguys that will sit there and they
(01:04:42):
won't share ye what it is theygot. He'd be like, man,
d what do you that? Thatis what we definitely don't share because I
don't want you. I mean, what are we trying to court the same
lady? And you she said,oh, this male good in there.
You come up there and I'm like, hey, I'm trying to one up
you, so nah, man lookat me. But yeah, there's reason
of the radio. I think yougotta find your own nick. All right,
(01:05:08):
back to some football here. Howmany quarterbacks did you have during during
that time? Vikings had a lotof quarters, Col Pepper and Brad Johnson.
I'm sure I were missed song becauseI know we Okay, the fresh
year was Col Pepper and then wehad Gus Gus Rodd himself. Yeah,
(01:05:32):
but the after a touchdown he hadbudded the padding or something, got a
concussion. Crazy guy man, soGus Rod. Then we had Brad Johnson.
Uh, we drafted Tavares Jackson, may you rest in peace. Then
it was I remember, I can'tthink of his name. Is he was
(01:05:55):
from Wisconsin, brook Bollinger, BrooksBollinger balling Jery was as well. Yeah,
it was Bombason. Was that alittle because it's another kid? He
he actually was there. He wasfrom Maryland and he played at Sant frank
When I was out there with him, I cannot think of his name.
(01:06:17):
We went through a lot of quarterbacks, yes we did, we did,
because he actually left went to hewent to Sant fran played good, then
went to Detroit, then came backto the Bikers. That later in his
career, but I wasn't there, and I cannot think his name, but
I know he played at Maryland.Well, hopefully possibly we'll get into what
you think ye happened in the draft, but we'll get to that in just
a little bit. How about AdrianPeterson. Oh, such a man again,
(01:06:44):
that linebacker. Yeah, practice, here's the thing. We couldn't really
hit Adrian Peterson. I can tellyou a story. We was doing our
blitz period and this is when wehad Eric b Enemy as the runner back
coach and bad Brad Schilders was washead coach at the time. I didn't
want to say his first year,I'm not sure, but Ap was like
a rookie and we knew he wasgoing to be special. But you know,
(01:07:06):
you gotta you know, you haveguys you want to protect. So
we're doing our blitz period and hedid a scan protection where I didn't see
him. I was blitzing, andthen he popped out behind the line and
my natural reaction, I'm going fora speeds just drop it, and I
just ejected him into the quarterback ofto bars and I'm like and I just
(01:07:27):
like, oh lord, you know, coach, children like we gotta protect
our players. I'm just like,please don't cut me. I didn't mean
I didn't see him. So butI remember every benemy was like, no,
he's fun. He you know,he's got to learn to get physical,
to get tough. But but otherthan that, Adrian Preterson such a
such a great player. Blessed tohave played with him. Man. So
yeah, how about this very specialdate January ninth, two thousand and five
(01:07:53):
Wild Card game, The moon viewedaround the NFL part of that. I
definitely will not be part of themooning that part of the movie. But
I was a part of that game. That's the game I actually not not
far about he called him. Icame on the blitz and we did like
(01:08:15):
a blitz where if the running backpicked up I want to say, no,
he didn't pick up EJ. Hepicked up the other linebackers and I
could steinue with my blitz and hedidn't see me, and I caught him
like that. He threw a pickbecause Brian Williams intercepted it. Oh yeah,
that's when he threw a lot ofinterceptions. That game was three yeah,
and so yeah, that was thatwas an interesting game because during that
(01:08:36):
season we had lost him about bothtimes by last second field goal. Yeah,
so we came in. I remembercoming in like, no, there's
no way we're gonna like give themthis game. And the defense you know,
stepped up, Randy Moss and allthem them boys. I remember being
like really intense. We was readyfor the game. It was one of
those games we really wanted and wewas able to get so. And then
(01:08:59):
if people don't realized, the reasonthat he did the moon was because and
you have seen it, uh huhthe Green Bay Packer fans when you team
Bush was leaving, Yeah, theywould, yes. Yeah. Were they
doing it like a twenty one gunsalute just lined up or was it just
like PERIODICLD mooning? Honest honestly,I don't. I don't quite remember.
(01:09:23):
I do it was periodically mooning, but they might have had. I knew
it was about a few that theywould get together and they would they were
mooning us. But you know,we had lost prior to that at the
stadium, so I'm not really focused. I'm just mad that we lost the
Green Bay Packers. But but itwas nice to beat him and knock him
out the playoff that game. Sonow are you still coaching? Yes,
(01:09:45):
I coached at this high school downat Gaither, at Gaither and Tampa Floyd.
Yeah, very nice linebacker coach, linebacker coach, defensive coordinator. That's
so cool, man, You loveit. I do. I kind of
fell into it. In the COVIDtwenty twenty. I was living up here
here and my family is all backfrom Georgia. But I have a cousin
who also played in the NFL withTampa Bay and he coaches that I was
(01:10:09):
coaching at Tampa Catholic. But thisyear switching over the k there and he
was like, hey, man, come down and you know, come out.
And I'm like, okay, Icome out and just and then you
know, you kind of get outthere and just falling to it. And
I just fell in love with andI just love doing it. Man.
All Right, we're here with theMiller Like Vikings Draft Bar Tour. We're
here with our very special guests,Don Terrrius Thomas. When you got drafted,
(01:10:33):
you got you got at least onebuddy who's kind of a jackass before
you actually got drafted. Oh youheard about that story? Yeah, yes,
man, go through go through thatwhole bit. Because you're sitting there
going Okay, man, I'm gonnaget drafted. I'm so excited. And
(01:10:53):
then all of a sudden, somethinglike my buddies would do. Yeah,
So I'm waiting to get drafted, and you know, at that time,
does rounds are a lot longer. You know, they get in the first
three rounds, and so I'm inthe second round. I was trying to
get a phone call from a randomnumber, and at that time, you
know, you answer every call, right, and you kind of see and
you know on ESPN they put like, oh, this person is you know,
(01:11:16):
projected to go or you know, that's best up type of the best
available, right, and you knowmy name was up there, it's coming
down and I so somebody called meand I'm like answering. Hey. It's
like, hey, is this done, Terry as Thomas And I'm like yes.
And I don't even remember what teamthey said at the time, but
they was like I just want tocongratulations. We were going to drive you.
(01:11:39):
And I'm like hell yeah, Ilike us all excited and and then
next thing i know, I'm like, wait is because his name is Mayo?
Who's who's a preacher? Now helaughing, And I'm just like,
wait is this male and he waslike, man, I got you.
(01:11:59):
I'm like, man, don't evercall my phone with that bed. Well,
I can't say, but it wasit wasn't con words. I was
pretty upset because I'm like, man, come on, dot play with me
like that. Many to this daywe are all on our group tests and
we got you know, we talkabout it, we'll bring it up.
But yeah, he he put thejoke on me, and he did it
(01:12:23):
on to one other one, myroommate as well. But he was he
was a joke. Still watching whenyou guys were playing with the bikes there
in that window. Were there alot of pranks that we had on other
players, no part of it either, not so much on the betterans,
but against us the rookies. Yeah, you gotta know what I'm saying.
(01:12:44):
Get his rookies a little house o. I remember one we was never told
we were told to never wear likenice clothes to the facility because Randy Moss
them would get your jeans of clothes, dunk him in the cold tub and
because it gets so cold, theywould set them outside and they would freeze.
So you come back and a shirt, yes, like man, come
(01:13:10):
on. And then then sometimes youknow, you want to put your keys
away because people would take your carand let your windows down and it may
be snowing, so you have snowall that. Yeah, we had had
pranks like that, but you know, obviously they you know, the rookie
dinner or you know for the linebackers, like we'll go out to some type
(01:13:30):
of restaurant and everybody coming, theyjust ordering I'm talking about they ordering up
like that's most suspensive, getting bottlesof wine and supposed to take things to
go. Yeah, and next thingyou know, hey, yeah he got
it. Everybody just leaves like,oh, I'm going to the bathroom,
but they leave you kind of likewhat he yet, Like here you go.
(01:13:51):
Then it'd be like me and therookies. Yeah, and every every
away game the rookies we had toin our decour was Ted Cottrell and he
loved Popeyes and it was at thattime, was only one Pope's in the
state in uh want to say thestate of Minnesota, but it was in
up there in Uptown, Okay.Yeah, and we would have to make
(01:14:12):
sure that we get his Popeye's chickenbiscuits and all that for the plane ride.
And we could not if we missed. We missed that it'd be it'd
be Troup. So so what doyou think here when we're talking a draft
and everything like that. You know, obviously the Vikings shipping at eleven and
twenty three. In your opinion oryour thoughts, what do you think they
(01:14:36):
will do? What do you wishthey would do. I hope they would
trade up to somehow get a quarterback, get one of those quarterbacks. But
you know, Sam Darnel, he'syou know, he's he's a guy that
has some talent to have some ability. Yeah, so you know he could
he could read it because he wentto the Jets. Yeah, people on
(01:14:59):
the stand like it. Sometimes it'sa lot has to do with where you
go. Like you can go toa program that don't develop you, just
like with any just like in college. But you know, he's a third
round so that I'll be some potentialthere. So hopefully, you know,
he has some pieces around him.I mean, if they decided not to
drop up, move up to geta quarterback, they can get some more
pieces to solidify some talent around himon the offensive side. I think we
(01:15:21):
could be successful still, But I'mconfident in the GMS and the people,
the personnel people that we got overthere and they spent they have been done
a great job of figuring out andhopefully we can keep moving forward and get
this thing back. And great isthis organization with the Minnesota Vikings. And
this is not me, you knowBrown knows in Kissing Ash. But yeah,
(01:15:43):
the thing is is that how wellthey treat the legends. That's what
I was going to say. I'vebeen so I was so blessed and fortunate
to come to the Vikings because Iknow other players that play for other organizations
that don't get treated. Like Iwas telling my cousin, My first cousin
played for the Bucks, and he'dbe like, many doing what you're doing
this and they invite you back andyou know, to the training camp things
(01:16:04):
and you know that, you know, to the games. And he'd be
like, no, we don't getnone of that. So they've they've done
a great job. The will familyand just the whole organization has has been
a one and and I saw onsomething about they ranked organization like the football
and the Vikings are one of thetop organizations that treat their former players and
(01:16:26):
current players the right way. Andyou know, you just got to be
thankful for that. Well, that'swhy free agents probably don't mind coming here.
Facility on the facility. Yeah, you now no longer have to worry
about your windows being turned down, current frozen. It's a bit different now.
(01:16:46):
So yeah, yeah, I thinkthe best frank that I ever had
pulled on me, and I'm stillbitter about it. I played hockey and
Sean I'm leaving the leaving the rink, and I was young guy, was
sophomore years of playing varsity, anduh so the older guys decided it would
be a good idea. We livedin a small town. We unlocked doors
(01:17:10):
at our house, so we certainlyweren't locking doors, right. So I
had this old pickup truck and theythey went and got a couple of bags
of confetti. They put it inthe top vents, uh huh, and
they just they cranked up the uhthe heat, and then they cranked the
tea or the I'm sorry, theradio up as a loud as humanly possible.
(01:17:32):
So and then they were distracting meas I'm like trying to get in
and go home. I turned thatthing on. It was my own parade,
in my great celebration, right,Yeah, so if you're looking for
a good frank, yeah, I'mlike I might have to try that way
with some of my hospital players. You know, you know go out and
(01:17:53):
prank, So maybe I need toget him back. You're a preacher now,
but you know I still got Istill want to get my gear back.
But I love it man, TerryusThomas, everybody. Thank you so
much, Bud, I really appreciateit. Thank you the Vikings and Miller
Lite and our draft party bar tour. I'm Musk from K one O two
(01:18:16):
kf an Vikings Radio Network or anywhereelse that doesn't pay me very well.
And I have a very special guesthere tonight. He's one of us,
and literally Buffalo, he's one ofus. Mister Todd Bowman, give it
up for arm hey must thanks forhaving me, buddy. Yeah, how
are you? Very good? Complain? So what you've been doing? What's
(01:18:40):
going on? Uh? Not alot? Just got back from a ten
days skiing vacation on Colorado. Ohnice, you had to go somewhere else
to get snow? Well we haven'thad seen no we go every year.
So I just went out there forten days, did some skiing and got
back from that you can do ColoradoHills mountains, that's all I really.
I grew up skiing though. That'swhere we went every year growing up for
(01:19:00):
our family vacation. Yeah, anduh, I can't ski around here.
Once you go out there, you'reyou're spoiled, right right right? Are
you doing the moguls and daffies?I did a little bit of moguls,
but not too much. A holicopters, more of a blue cruiser now a
blue cruiser. I just want toget to the bottom of the Hill's exactly
right, all right? So youwere born is it Roughton Ruth Ruthdon Ruth,
(01:19:20):
Din, Minnesota. Very small town, two hundred people maybe, yeah,
well back in my day used tobe three fifty, so it's huge
back then. Wow, wow youleft at everybody else was like, yeah,
we're out of here, crying outloud. Did you do any farming?
Was yeah? My dad has beenyou sold pioneer seed corn for almost
forty eight years. Yeah, andmy other brother, uh works on the
(01:19:41):
farm with him. So yeah,I've been grew up on the farm my
whole life. About fifteen hundred acresone hundred and twenty head of black angus
cattle. So yeah, oh,stay busy. Now, what was the
worst job, because for me,picking rock was always the worst job.
Picking rock is yeah, that Isuppose probably fixing fence because my dad,
after I graduated then he decided hewas going to get an automatic fence whole
(01:20:03):
post old digger behind the track. But when we were growing up it was
oh yeah by hand. Yeah.Oh man, yeah, so that that
was probably the worst. Picking rockswas always Yeah, that wasn't very much
fun either. The uh so,I grew up in Owatana and I worked
on farm, so my grandparents hadhim. My very first job, my
very first paid job was I wasa teet clear Oh seriously, I got
(01:20:26):
paid to clean the teach right beforethey went on the milker. That sounds
like a horrible job. It wasa horrible job, but I got paid,
so that was nice. Yeah.Yeah, I think the other the
other one that I think was worsethan actually then fixing fence, was we
uh detasseled corn. Oh yeah, that was not fun. Yeah, and
did you and your brother like, yeah, it was? It was.
(01:20:48):
We used to actually it was likethree of us. We were kind of
like forming for a bunch of smallerkids. Yeah, and then you had
to like make sure they were gettingthem all and it was not fun.
We did it for like three weeksone summer and it was the worst job
ever. Well, you got abetter job later. So you're born in
nineteen seventy two. You and Iare both fifty one. So how are
you holding up? I feel great, that's beauty. Like my wife will
(01:21:11):
I said of being the backup quarterback, ninety percent of my career is I
didn't get hit that much, SoBodyWise, I feel good. But just
getting old, I mean, forgoodness sakes, I now know when I'm
gonna start peeing, but I don'tknow exactly when it's gonna be over.
Yeah, I spool, I getI'm to the point now where I started
putting my foot up over my kneewhen I put my sock on. Yeah,
(01:21:33):
you gotta do that. I wakeup out of bed and I'm sore,
and I'm like, did I getin a fight? I'm pretty sure
it's because my wife is trying tosmother me with a pillow. Every day
is always different, right, AndI also cry a lot. I don't
know what happened there. Sentimental Yeah, yeah, I just hear sad music
when I'm walking. I'm not evenwatching the show on TV and I just
(01:21:55):
start. So you can't watch sadmovies anymore? Oh I do because I
like a good crime, right,Yeah, I don't have any problem with
that. You signed with the Vikingsin nineteen ninety seven. You knew the
show was going to be stupid.Wait, we haven't even got to the
good stuff. Six seasons in theNFL, right, thirteen thirteen? Six
seasons with the Vikings. Oh,there we go. That was better math.
(01:22:18):
All right. That's pretty good careerfor a guy coming out of Saint
Cloud State. Yeah. I wasvery blessed. Obviously. I was lucky
enough. Danny took a chance onme, and you know, like I
said, gave me a chance tobe there and kind of earned my way
for six years and then you know, got traded from there. So how
is your son doing? Will thisbe his senior year coming out? Actually,
(01:22:39):
well, he's gonna graduate in acouple of weeks, but he actually
has two years of eligibility left becausehe got the COVID year. Oh yeah,
yeah, yeah, So Iane Melmanis doing real well out there.
Yeah, he had a good yearlast year obviously, the year before was
rough. They went three and eight, and then lastly he turned around got
to ten and three and got tothe national quarter finals. Nice. Nice.
Back to the thirteen years that Iwas to you that you played in
(01:23:00):
the NFL, think about this. You played for New Orleans, Green Bay,
Jacksonville, Saint Louis, Baltimore, and of course the Minnesota Vikings.
That's a whole lot of jerseys andhelmets. Do you guys have a special
room for that at the house.I have them going up my going to
my bonus room above my garage.Oh nice, yeah, nice? And
my son Aiden has them with allthe helmets in his room. Oh no
(01:23:23):
kidding. Oh that's awesome, man. I figured that there has to be
some special spot you have to getyou, Yeah, for sure. If
that's NFL right there? For goodness. Six And you were a part of
the nineteen ninety eighteen for the Vikings. Yes, I was, And I
was thinking about this because I'm notgoing down the dark side. We also
know what happened there. But youstarted up with the Vikings in ninety seven.
(01:23:46):
Mister John Randall's on the team. And then you guys, did you
have to play matchmaker that was kindof yeah, how did that happen?
Then, you guys are brother inlaw. This was back, you know,
pre nine eleven days where you couldactually come to the gate of the
airport, oh, you know whenyou got off the plane. So we
were getting off the plane from aroad trip and John and had a couple
(01:24:09):
of beers on the plane. Courtneyand her sister came to pick me up
and we got off the plane andthe next morning, John was like,
Hey, who's with your sister?I said, who was with your wife?
I said, that was my wife'ssister. Man I would take around
on a date. And Candice atthe time was kind of like, I
don't know. I mean, theonly thing you see if John was on
game days, right right? Right? So then yeah, so we finally
(01:24:31):
talked her into it. We endedup going on, you know, a
couple of double dates together, andthen you know, everything else is kind
of history. Wow, that's that'sawesome. I love that. Yeah,
I got one story I got toadd, yeah please. Yeah. So
nineteen ninety eight, yea, theyear we went fifteen and one. Yes,
Okay, my good friend Matt LubinOkay aka Nation is back during the
you know standing my wife back there. Okay, Okay, So he's probably
(01:24:56):
one of the most die hard MinnesotaBikings fans I've ever experienced. I mean,
every single day is Minnesota Vikings,Minnesota Vikings. So nineteen ninety eight,
he's got a VHS tape. I'veactually seen this tape. Okay,
he used to go tailgate before everysingle game at six am in the morning.
Yeah, he's got a VHS tapeof him going around all the tailgates
(01:25:16):
in nineteen ninety eight and interviewing people. Right, Okay, so this is
the VHS tape. Show how hesneaks this VHS tape into the game.
Oh and he actually has game footageof the nineteen ninety eight NFC Championship game.
Now, hopefully the NFL doesn't comecopyright Nation, you might be in
(01:25:38):
trouble. But it is an absolutejoy to watch that tape. I watched
it a couple of times. Yeah, absolutely hilarious. Oh that's so funny.
I think you guys, should youknow, like the Manning cast?
Yeah, with Eli and Pyton.I think a brother in law cast,
you think so? Yeah, Ithink you and John I'd be entertained.
I'd watch that I think everybody wouldtune in just to listen to what John
had to say. Oh that's nottrue. That's not true. You'd steal
(01:26:00):
all the lines. So it's knownthat quarterbacks are better golfers than defensive tackles.
Is that this truth? Well,I don't know. I mean it's
Johnny. I know he has gottenreally good. Yeah you know. I
mean he's a he's a mid midtto low eighties guy, sometimes in the
(01:26:23):
high seventies. I mean he's gottento be very very good at golf.
Let's just put it that way.Yeah, well that's all he does.
Yeah, he plays golf. There, I've been playing some golf and I
got a chance to go out ofthe Masters. Dude, Oh my gosh,
here we go. He's gonna rubthis in. Everybody must got to
go to the Master. And Iwant to tell everybody about it. Four
days of golf that we played outsideof Augusta, and then I got Championship
(01:26:46):
Sunday tickets. Yeah, those passes. Wow? Was that every the coolest
thing was I mean, outside ofthe just monster Hills. Can't believe the
undulation, how much green. Buton eighteen we wait, Tiger comes up.
Now he of course blew up,but the crowd was so huge and
(01:27:08):
there everybody was cooling nuts. Everybody'skind of thinking this might be the last.
So he taps it in and everybody, I mean, it was the
loudest roar I've ever heard. Andwhen he tipped the cap, Oh Todd,
I actually started walling up a littlebit. It was it was a
great time. No, we gotto see Scheffler. He walked by five
foot from me, you know,I mean it was It's it's crazy.
(01:27:30):
Excuse me, It's crazy how closeyou can actually get it, I know,
to the players. Yeah, it'sno other tournaments like that. Yeah.
And you talk about the Tiger effect, I mean everybody he still comes
across, he thinks he can win, and everybody probably knows he can't.
But the fans that he brings tothe game is something like you've never seen.
I mean, I remember when Iwent to uh the two thousand PGA
at Hazel Team and like I washere, don't understand, you know,
(01:27:54):
you can just feel the crowd startedto coming and like, oh, Tier,
this must be Tiger must be inthis next group. It's just insane.
Oh yeah, And that's when nobodywanted to play around it, right,
you know, I mean it wasn'tjust play with it right? You're
like, can we be in thevery front les sere? Your score is
so good, I'd like to bethe first town. It would be outstanding.
All right? Are you ready? This is what we do in Vikings
(01:28:14):
Country. These are our five typicallystupid Vikings Country questions Todd Bowman, Here
we go. Number one, it'sprom season, it's coming up. Did
you go to prom I? Didyou did in that tiny little town?
Yeah? Yeah I did? Idid? Actually, did you do a
promposal? A prom posal? Yeah? The deal the candles out of the
(01:28:38):
well? Actually I went. Thefirst two years I went. I actually
had a girl ask me because Iwasn't old enough to ask to go.
Oh yeah yeah, So I gotasked to go. So you went multiple
times? Yeah? Unfortunately, whatan absolute waste of time. I went
one time and then I realized, yeah, I'm not doing that again.
Yeah, okay, here's the numbertwo. What's your stance on clowns?
(01:29:01):
What do you mean by stance? Are you afraid of them? Do you
love them? You? Do youwant to be one? Do you want
to be with one? I don'tthink I want to be one. I
don't know, they're just kind ofinsignificant. I don't mean, oh,
there's no clown people. There. So many people, though, are are
terrified to clowns. They freak themout. I don't I've never been scared
of crown clowns. I guess yeah, I am a lot of it,
(01:29:24):
A little bit, A little bit. I just you know, I get
a little depends on what kind ofclown you're talking about. Oh, scary
clowns, no way, Like ifyou're talking like Pennywise, No, he's
Ledger from The Joker, like, like that's scary. Yeah, that's scary.
There really are only two clowns thateverybody can agree on that they love,
Ronald McDonald and of course Crusty, the clown from the Simpsons. Maybe
(01:29:45):
maybe cam is Ronald McDonald considered aclown. Hell yeah, he's got he's
got the big clown feet, he'sgot the red hair. All right,
you must not eat fast food. That's how you take care of yourself.
So we all right here. Numberthree, there's a swift I guess say
this right, a swift onomics courseat American University. So basically, students
(01:30:08):
are studying Taylor Swift's economic impact, including her eras tour earnings. When you
were at class in Cloud, whatwas the dumbest course that you took?
Uh, geez, I don't evenknow. Probably I don't know every course
(01:30:29):
I took A kind of dunt Iwant to I don't know. I took
intro to Sex and I learned nothing. Oh you know what? This wasn't
Actually I liked the course, butit's kind of I took with my wife.
I took Wilderness Survival. Oh,that is kind of cool. That's
kind of cool. We had tobuild a quinz. You know what a
quinsy is. I have no ideawhat. It's basically just dig a shelter
(01:30:51):
inside of a big snowbank and thenyou have to stay in there overnight and
like record the temperatures and all thatstuff. Quincy. Yeah, all right,
I'm too old to actually start doingthat. But there's another great story
about that class. My wife couldtell you, but I don't know if
I should tell you or really, yeah, is it embarrassing? Well not
really. We maybe went to thebars one night for way way too long,
(01:31:13):
and then the next morning I hadto do like a presentation. Oh
no, and I was a littlebit under the weather, right little green,
and all my my, all Idid was put like some cella fane
in the bottom of the soup can, and I made it like, oh,
you can put it in the waterand you can see fish underneath.
And my wife thought I was goingto throw off the whole time I was
up there taking doing the the presentation. Right there, you want to dig
your own Quincy classroom exactly? Allright, here we go number four on
(01:31:39):
our Vikings country five typically stupid questions. Do you agree with me that the
Vikings should pick back to back quarterbacksat eleven and at twenty three and then
let them battle it out? Idon't know about that. What that's that's
that's you want to do? Need, Yeah, let's get Pennick Junior bo
(01:32:00):
Nicks and battle it out. Ilike you picked, you said Pennix Junior
first. Yes, that your guy? Yeah, oh yeah, I yeah,
I like that guy. If youhad to, if you had to
pick out of anybody besides maybe thetop So who's your top two? Well
it's gotta be Williams, right, yeah, Okay, what do you what
do you feel about him? Idon't. I feel like there's some extra
luggage that comes with that. I'mnot a big fan of his antics a
(01:32:24):
little bit. Yeah, Yeah, and then Daniels, I think it's gonna
go. I'm pretty sure that couldalso be a JJ spot. But yeah,
I think that Pennix Junior will dropdown enough that you can get him
there. I hope he's I hopehe's the one that we pick in all.
Honestly, I think he's the mostready to play right now. Oh,
we're gonna get this breakdown here injust a second. Okay, So
(01:32:44):
fans are hoping that we're gonna moveup to three and you know, trade
up try to get there, takeboth the eleven twenty three, maybe even
take next year number one to tryto get way up there. But we
already have a first round number threeguy on the team, Sam Darnold to
do. How do you feel aboutthat acquisition? You know, honestly,
I don't think people have a lotof expectations about him, but I feel
(01:33:08):
like, you know, honestly,he could have a really good year.
Yeah, you know, I thinkhe's got the talent and he's look at
the teams that he's been on,you know as well as I do.
There's a lot of quarterbacks to getdrafted a bad bad team the Jets.
I mean, he was with theJets and they were bad, bad and
then he goes from there to Carolinaand they are even worse, right,
So he goes and spends one seasonand the forty nine ers is the backup,
and now he's coming to Minnesota witha lot of weapons and a lot
(01:33:30):
of you know, obviously a veryvery good offensive mine in in. Yeah,
koc So, I feel like, you know, he could have a
great year, which would be agreat situation for a young quarterback to come
into dot behind him. What wouldyou like to see them do? I
want him to take panics and howhonestly that's my guy. I don't know
why. I just feel like he'sby far the most pure legit passer in
(01:33:53):
the draft right now. Everybody talksabout his injury. Everybody talks about his
injuries, you know, but Ithink since he left Indiana, he hasn't
been running around in scrambling and justyou know, pure runs. I think
they used to run him a lotmore in Indiana obviously, but if you
take away the injury part of it, you know, I don't his two
years at Washington. Yeah, almostnine thousand yards. It's like sixty seven
(01:34:14):
touchdowns, right, I mean inhis arm. Yeah, I think that
that bodes well for our offense becauseKevin O'Connell likes to throw outside the numbers.
I mean, obviously there's some middlethrowers and stuff like that. They
go deep every once in a while, but those are long throws like sometimes
fans will go, oh, wehave such a checkdown. No, it
(01:34:35):
wasn't right. You throw a sevenyard out when you're on the opposite opposite
sad hash. Yeah, but yeah, I like him as well. What
do you think about the games?I mean, have you watched any of
the quarterbacks like Williams as far aslike on the field. Yeah, I've
watched, you know, quite afew games of Caleb Williams, and I
(01:34:56):
like him. I think there's certainguys like that that you know, they
took a He runs around, hemakes all these plays, but if you
watch a lot of his film, there's a lot of like super easy reads
that he just misses early on andthen all of a sudden starts scrambling around.
I like guys, you know, like I would say, take one,
two, three, get the ballin your hands. Get it to
your playmakers, get it to JustinJefferson. Let him run with the ball,
you know, then the quarterback doesn'thave to scramble. Yeah, you
(01:35:18):
know what I mean. And Penixcan move a lot better than people give
him credit for, just because hehasn't really had to. I think there's
a lot of quarterbacks that maybe scramblenowadays because they don't read the defense and
get the ball out of their handsand that's like their fallback, right.
Well, that might be why McCarthyhas made his way up the charts because
for a while there like JJ isgonna probably go in the second round or
(01:35:40):
just late first, right, andthen it just kept on unransing out because
he does have that processing right ability, right, I mean look at him,
and then even like bone Nicks,I you know, it's like which
one is going to be better? You don't know. I mean, it's
such an imperfect science when you're pickingquarterback, especially with bon Nicks and play
in there in Oregon. I mean, yeah, that's passing right, and
that's a pro style. Whereas Karthydid, he didn't have to throw very
(01:36:02):
much. No, But the otherside of it is if you look at
like some of the interviews McCarthy hashad, their verbiage is more like an
NFL A lot of a lot ofthose teams like Oregon and that they're all
their play is like, hey,we're just running, you know, panther
and that panther is like one wholeplay where they don't understand the processing of
Colin plays in the huddle. Allright, So growing up in Minnesota playing
(01:36:25):
college football obviously here in Minnesota, didn't playing for your favorite team, the
Minnesota Vikings. Have you ever seena more intriguing Vikings draft? Ear?
Not really? I mean, inall honesty, like it's it's a pretty
interesting situation that they're in and figuringout exactly who they're gonna pick. I
mean, you look back at theyears of you know, ninety eight,
but we're coming off of a goodyear. We had a lot of good
(01:36:47):
players. But you know, okay, are we gonna pick Randy? Are
we now? Who? You know? Randy falls to us? But I
think in the long run, thisis probably one of the most intriguing picks.
I mean, how many quarterbacks havewe picked in the first round?
Besides what Dante h t Jack Ithink also didn't I don't know, maybe
he might have dropped on Yeah, but it's not many like you said,
(01:37:09):
fran Yeah, okay, here's thesilly one for you. Julia Louis Dreyfth
she was once recognized as Elaine. You're yeah, oh yeah, we'll dance
like she does here in advance Florylater well, apparently she was recognized as
Elaine from Seinfeld and she was inthe hospital in laborake it after water had
(01:37:35):
just broken, and someone was like, Elaine, have you ever been in
a situation I mean, not thatyou were in labor, but have you
ever been in like a strange situationwhere someone spotted You're like? Why now?
No? I guess I don't know. Maybe I think the worst is
sometimes yeah, right here talking withyou. Yeah, don't listen to Jeff.
(01:38:00):
Don't look at his hand gestures overhere. He wasn't doing anything.
No, I get no. Iguess. Probably one of the worst was
in I was went back to collegeone time after I was already gone,
and I saw a guy at thebar and he's like, hey, ton,
how's going. I'm like good.I shook his hand and then he
gave me the old you don't rememberme doing. I'm like, yeah,
I knew, I knew his face. He's like and then he literally gave
(01:38:24):
me the what's what's my name? And I literally gave him the dude,
you're seriously not going to do that. And then I just and I was
like, I just walked away fromhim because I'm like, I couldn't remember
his name. That's a that's aparty follow right there, for sure.
So it happened to me. Mywife made me go, it's just a
stupid story. But what ones arenot? So my wife and her family
(01:38:46):
had some like melanoma, like youknow, just concerns or whatever. And
so my wife's like, you haveto go and get your balls stuck.
You gotta get a body cavity search. Basically, whitch. I didn't know
that that's what they do. Theyhave a thing that's called the spread test.
Oh god, and uh and Ifind out the hard way, you
know. I'm like, oh great. You know when you you you don't
(01:39:11):
have to get in the stirrups, did you? No? No, no,
But you know if you go tothe dentist, you're gonna flash your
teeth and you know, dude, you at least brush it. I didn't
know what presentation level I had downthere, and as soon as she gets
done checking everywhere, she goes, are you the guy from the radio?
No? No, Yes, I'mDave Ryan. Right. Who is the
(01:39:34):
biggest celebrity that you've ever ran intoor met? Well? I know,
honestly, probably was nineteen ninety eightthe NFC Championship game. We're in the
locker room getting ready to go outfor like early early warm ups and blowing
the hold. I look over andMJ was sitting at Randy's locker way and
I walked by and just like shookhis hand and like walked out. It
(01:39:55):
was just like, Michael Georgan, you didn't you didn't make it awkward at
all. I'm not. I'm notgonna stand here and talk to him.
I was like, was like,hey, what's up. M Jay,
shook his hand and walked out. That was it. I'm wearing your shoes,
Okay, bad man, I'm sorry. So this is a weird one.
(01:40:15):
Today a listener won some tickets andshe said bye now. And I've
heard people say it before, butI never really thought about it that much
because that is absolute the end.Bye now. By now yeah, bye
now. And I was like, that's kind of mean. Actually, can't
she say it talk to you lateror thanks? See you? No?
(01:40:40):
Bye? Now? Do you thinkthat's like the end? Like she never
wants to ever talk to you again? I give her ticket? Is that
just for now? Like for today? Yeah? How long does it stretch
out? Bye now? Todd Bowman, Bye now, Thanks buddy, Thank
you, ladies and gentlemen, Thankyou so much for coming out here to
(01:41:01):
Jimmies. I'm must from K oneo two kfan, the Vikings Radio Network,
and you are here for the MillerLite Vikings Draft Bar Tour. This
is our last of the week andwe made it special because we want to
make sure we have Minnesota's own MichaelFloyd Junior in here. Ladies and gentlemen,
how are you, buddy? Well, I'm kind of pissed, to
(01:41:24):
be honest with you, because youlook so dapper. You got the sweet
looking sweater on, and I'm wearingthis Miller Light Vikings golf shirt that is
as hideous at as it is awesome. I'm just trying to cover my dad,
Bob. So well, that's whyI got the extra launch all right.
So, as I mentioned, bornin Saint Paul, which my first
(01:41:46):
question is going to be Where isthe best place to eat in Saint Paul,
like that little honk like the policethat nobody are Like. You have
to live in that area to know, Oh, this is a great spot
to go to. We got Mama'sPizza off a Rice Street. Yeah,
we had the best steak house backin the day when I grew up off
(01:42:06):
of Payne Avenue. That was awesome. What was do you remember what was
called the best steakhouse? That's whatit was. Really Yeah, so I
got a double steak burner with theextra cheese and a big basket of fries.
Oh God, that sounds absolutely amazing. Played for Cretean Durham Hall and
excelled in multiple sports and obviously includingfootball. Were you close to thinking maybe
(01:42:30):
basketball and track? No, theyou can't make any money. The confident
just wasn't there as it wasn't football. Yeah, so I kind of steered
on going to the football way insteadof going to basketball track. So and
then you go to touchdown, Jesus, you got a Notre Dame. Yes,
and what an experience that is.I mean just to walk out on
(01:42:51):
the field, I would guess inthe recruitment I had to just have you
go, oh, this is prettysweet. Yeah, so I never thought
of going to school. I onlythought of going to school for three years.
Yeah, because I was just gonnago to the NFL. But I
only had nine credits left my senioryear because I took nineteen credits in my
junior year and being the first personto graduate from college for my my household,
(01:43:13):
okay, I was just I waslike, I'll just bank on myself
and you know, stay there foranother year and you know, up my
draft stop hopefully nice. So youdid graduate? I did. Okay,
that's that's new to me because Ididn't. Yeah, you ended up in
radio because you get kicked out ofcollege. That's exactly what I did.
Now. I started in the businessschool, but then I noticed that everyone
was wearing suits to class all thetime, and I'm like, heck no,
(01:43:36):
like I can't. I don't seemyself sending a cubicle all the time.
So I went to sociology where Igot to meet people and talk to
people all the time. So that'smostly what I like to do. Next
Thursday, it is the draft, first night of the draft, and it's
very exciting for the Vikings where wehave the two picks at eleven and twenty
three. We'll get into that whatyou think they might do. But you
(01:43:59):
yourself drafted in the first round. How cool is that? I mean,
I mean, how did that processgo? Because you're sitting there where where
was it the location at that time? In New York? In New York.
So you're in New York, Yougot your family with you, yes,
and you know you're gonna go offthe board. But do you do
you feel like every player in theNFL that you went too deep, like
(01:44:23):
they should have taken you first.Oh yeah, I think I should have
went to Jacksonville had five. Yeah, another wide receiver went. But if
I could go back again, Iwould probably do it at home just because
like it's super nerve wracking there.Like I never took off my suit coat
because I had freaking sweat stains allthe way down, you know, to
my belt line. So I waslike, uh, you know, if
(01:44:45):
I could do it again, Iwant to. I would just stay at
home, my whole family who wentahead of you? Because most players remember
Dustin Blackman as a wide receiver, that's so basically yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, Okay, let's see.He played for the Patriots you played
for the Vikings. Obviously, Imentioned the Cardinals, the Saints, Washington
Redskins, and Baltimore Ravens over yourcareer, which I know you probably know
(01:45:10):
these stats. You damn near gotfour thousand yards receiving. So you're sitting
there at thirty nine to fifty nine, twenty five touchdowns. That's over eight
seasons. That is amazing. Butwhat's more important to me is I can
see that thing on your finger andour super Bowl winner? Man, Yeah,
what was that experience? Like?It was awesome? Man, It's
(01:45:32):
it's something that you know, notmany people get the opportunity to do,
but I did, and it's it'sit was a great villain and it's something
I'll never forget. Well why wouldyou, because most people in the NFL
and anybody who's a football fan won'tforget that Super Bowl because Falcons had what
the twenty eight to three lead atone point, and then all of a
(01:45:53):
sudden twenty five unanswered and here yougo, and then all of all people
Tom Brady to march down the fieldand it was White that ran it in
right for the town. Yes,it was probably the calmest locker room at
halftime I've ever been into really Likeit was just like they all we already
knew and Tom gave us the confidencethat we're gonna come back and win it,
(01:46:16):
like and I felt that from himand being on the team. Like
people always ask me, like onsocial media, like how I was playing
with Tom, And I tell you, I've had a lot of old veterans
I played with, but there's noone more you know, determined and make
you want to go out and practiceand be better right than Tom easily?
Is it fair to say you becauseI actually heard somebody say this. I
(01:46:38):
think it was Edelman who actually madethe comment, and that could be wrong
on that, but the comment wasis that Belichick was the coach, but
we played for Tom. Oh.Yeah, yeah, I definitely believe so,
yeah it was. I love thatkind of coach though I like Belichick.
I mean, I know they hadall over the walls to do your
(01:47:00):
job. Like there's no one there'sno fancy cars in the parking lot.
You want to know there was millionairesin this facility. It was just everyone
coming to work and have one commongoal and that was to win the Super
Bowl. And that's because of youknow, the veteran leadership, you know,
anchored to Tom that we had ina lot of them show that the
(01:47:23):
best take place for him. WouldTom eat there? Yeah, but no
one would see him knowing you know, he'll go in and close hours or
something like that. That's what hewould do. Now, where do you
keep the ring? And that thingis massive? I mean you had big
hands, but holy goodness, soI have does your arm getting like longer?
(01:47:45):
On the right there? I havea basket of a bunch of rings
and my uh, this isn't likea key basket that most people are.
It's a bunch of It's a bunchof wedding rings that I have that uh
that I switched out to where ohI thought may even married that if I'm
going out a date with my wife. If I'm going out date with my
(01:48:05):
wife, I switch it up toyou know, match my outfits and stuff
like that, and yeah, youget all together. I keep it in
there. Yeah. So it's justthat that's it's not on display or anything
like that. Yeah. Now,I think the only person that's probably gonna
get a hand of it is uhmy son Michael. So I gotta watch
him at all times when he comesinto the bathroom. So you got three
(01:48:27):
kids, right, Yeah? Igot three? Oh man, how old
are they? Ten? Four andtwo? Oh jeez? So you are
busy? Yeah every day? Yeah, every day is a grind. That
house just gotta be absolutely insane.I remember the days, man, I
remember. It's fun. Though, when one of them is going out the
house, it's it's not complete, right, Like my my oldest daughter was
at a camp for five days andjust the house was just different. And
(01:48:49):
I'm like so happy that she's backright right, because the house is now
full now and like the craziness allbegins again, you know. So that's
awesome. So you live here inMinnesota. Obviously you're from Minnesota. So
what is it that you do now? I mean, after did you officially
retire? I didn't officially, butthere's a lot of players that don't.
(01:49:11):
Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm atthat stage. But your body doesn't work
like that. You get more repsin you no reps. I walk the
golf course and I drive the cartand play golf. That's what I do.
Now. What's the best foursome you'veever played in? And who was
a part of it? Man?I learned how to golf in Arizona.
(01:49:33):
So Larry Fitzgerald, Patrick Peterson,Carson Palmer. Yeah, you know,
springtime was the best time. Springand summer. You know, everyone's leaving
from Arizona. So we go outthere. There are two gallons of water
one hundred and fifteen degrees and wejust coaxed along the golf course. Yeah,
probably about I don't know, thirtysix, you know, something like
(01:49:54):
that. So it's always fun.I'm trying to get my wife actually to
let's get somewhere, you know,or another place, because I want a
golf all the time. And youdon't want to ride in the cart with
Larry because you didn't want to watchthat good of golf. He has to
be in the best out of allthose I'm telling you right now. Everyone
thinks that because they see nice shotson TV. Don't let it fool you.
(01:50:15):
Yes, Dargin, let's go.Everyone's like we're all the same.
Yeah, it's just who plays betterthat day, that's it. Right,
So you can bring game like that. How come you haven't been on celebrity
bents. It's so hard to getinto them things. Yeah, and like
once you're in them, you haveto keep going otherwise you're you're out.
You lose your spot. Yeah, you lose your spot and you ain't getting
(01:50:36):
it back. I'm telling you now, like they're going to replace you.
So you're into real estate here aswell, in an investor. Yeah,
OK, so I do real estateand I invest in my own real estate.
I enjoy it, you know, being in sociology major. You know,
I love people, loving helping people, and I just see it as
another way to help people. Youknow, when I go into a meeting
(01:50:58):
with somebody, I might look.My intentions aren't here to force you into
doing anything, right, I justwant to help you. You know a
lot of people are here to justmake a buck, right, Yeah,
that's a bonus for me, andyou know I'm here to give you what
you need and how this is tobe done. Michael Floyd Junior, as
my guests were sitting up here atJimmy's, and this is all part of
the Minnesota Vikings Draft party bar tour, as we have the draft coming up
(01:51:25):
on Thursday. We'll get to thatin just a little bit. Plus we'll
also get to the typically or fivetypically stupid Vikings country questions. You're gonna
like that or maybe you won't.I don't know. You come to the
Vikings and okay, so you gotyour Super Bowl ring. You come to
the Vikings and you're a part ofthe Minneapolis miracle. Yeah. So I
(01:51:46):
mean, what was that experience like? Because I remember sitting in the broadcast
booth, we were losing our mind. I'm doing the I'm getting ready to
do the post game. I'm alreadyright. I know it's about sons and
bitches and blah blah blah, youknow, and then all of a sudden,
what a plight. I'm gonna behonest. I had my flight already
set to go back to Arizona, and uh, because I just did it,
(01:52:10):
just just because I had it justto see. And you know,
we won. I'm like, ohmy gosh, like going against Drew Brees.
You know, the the stakes aren't, you know, too high for
us. But I mean we cameout and uh, you know, we
played well and got lucky. Asa Minnesota and a Vikings fan from when
you were a kid, I thinkeverybody was so damn happy that that happened.
(01:52:33):
To Sean Payton. After he's sittingthere, you don't do those school
clapping and you're like, you sonof a oh yeah. And then now
that you see him in the news, how he just dogs you know,
Russell Wilson, you know how heis. But I was down there in
New Orleans for training camp, andI mean I liked him. I didn't
(01:52:58):
see that that part of him,of what they displayed him on you know,
on the media and stuff like that. He was actually a pretty good
coach. But I mean I seenhim. I've seen a rookie run out
crying in yeah, drill, Yeah, I seen it. Yeah. Well,
supposedly he was really tight friends withcoaches him and he ran the score
up on him on Christmas. Thatwas kind of nice. Yeah, Kamara
(01:53:20):
ends up getting like five touchdowns thatday. It was like I remember,
absolutely all right, so here wego. Are you ready for this?
I'm ready? Oh wait, beforewe get into the five typically stupid Vikings
Country questions, I saw that you, uh, you're a big fan of
GEA Good Morning Football? Yeah, they What do you think about the fact
(01:53:44):
that they're moving from New York,They're going down to La Peter Schrager's not
gonna move. He Brooklyn kid,Brooklyn's in Brooklyn's Kyle Brant. I don't
really see him moving out of there. No Jamie Rdall Minnesota's own. It
appears that, you know, sheis already making plans after she's had the
baby. And I don't know whatCourdy's gonna do, but they're changing the
(01:54:09):
whole crew. I watch it almostevery morning, every morning. Yeah,
I don't. I haven't caught ittoo much lately because my kids wake up
at seven o'clock, so it's eitherCoco Melon or you know, some other
right kids show. So I don'tget the opportunity too much. Now you
ever sit there and you're watching akid's show and then you realize your kid
(01:54:31):
walked out of the room, butyou just kept on watching it. Yes,
you're like, I gotta see howthis episode before you get to that.
I have a funny story. Iused to make fun of this guy
who knew all the souls, allthe songs to his kids. Saw I
come up to my wife, I'mlike, man, this this dude knows
all the songs to his kids souls. What a loser. A year later,
I'm over there singing all the songsmy kids, you know, like
(01:54:56):
my kids were jumping on the trampolineand I'm watching phideas and firm I'm like,
oh yeah, and then I'm insideby myself. It just happens.
It just happens. All right. Here we go five typically stupid Vikings country
questions. Number one, biggest, biggest celebrity you've ever met? Evil?
Really really details please Vegas? Ahreally? Okay, you're speaking in code.
(01:55:26):
We'll move on to the next one. All right. Number two.
You're a big basketball fan. Yeah, uh, can you describe it exactly?
What is a foul? I thinkyou've got to go back to the
eighties and nineties to see what afoul is. Oh yeah, that's that's
real basketball. Yeah. I likethat physicalness that you know. Now it's
(01:55:46):
like tic tac files. You know, you just touch someone, right,
So I mean if you give thema shoulder in the chest something like that,
that's a foul. Well, likethat'stuff they're calling now that that's no
foul. Yeah, it's hard fora hockey player to actually figure out exactly
what I'm watching him Like that didn'tseem like a foul. Then other times
you're like he's completely just backed in, the guy through it albow nothing.
(01:56:06):
Well, now they got new rulesfor the NFL too, now, so
like it's almost getting towards like flagfootball. You know, you can't hit
people. But I always tell peoplelike I would rather get hit up top
than get my legs cut from underme. Yeah, like it's it just
sucks. So I wish they coulddo that because you're getting hit by you
(01:56:27):
know, one hundred and eighty poundguys, safeties and stuff like that.
That doesn't really affect me. Butif you take the legs out from under
me, I'm done for the game, possibly done for the year, you
know. So it's it's tough. There was one Lion's dB that took out
a couple of people, including TJHawkinson number thirty one. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, I was watchingman, But what other way?
I understand the other side too,What other way can he take down TJ?
(01:56:50):
Though? Yeah he can't. Besidesyeah, besides cut the legs up
from on them. But that's justa career injury, right that, which
I hate. That was the onlyway you could bring it down, Jimmy
Kleinsash, Yeah, you had togo shinn to toes. That's it.
I don't even want to hit thathim or Mike Alstop from Tima Bay.
Two big monsters get out of theway. So we were talking basketball there,
(01:57:13):
Timberwolves versus Suns. How excited areyou for this little playoff basketball for
the Wolves? I love it becauseit's it's all stars versus all stars,
and uh, you know, it'sthey're going head to head, So who's
better? Which team is gonna comeout? Is the is the season that
the Timbles had? They're gonna comeout in the playoffs right here? Or
(01:57:34):
are you know? Is it gonnabe like every other year? And I
think the mentality, uh that theyoung guys bring on the team is just
gonna ignite us to get over theSuns finally. Yeah. And those guys
that are out on the court, they don't know the years and years of
WOA that the rest of us havefelt, not at all Number three,
(01:57:56):
and they're typically stupid vikings coun truequestions four to twenty tomorrow, Uh Willie
Nelson or Snoop Dogg, Snoop SnoopYeah. I then I'll tell you story
of this too. My sister,my my mom's brother, Yes, brought
me and my nephew to a SnoopDogg concert when we were like ten eleven
(01:58:18):
years old, and we came backsmiling like, yeah, oh for sure.
Oh my mom was so pissed onmy at her brother, Oh so
pissed. Yeah. I went andmet and had to do a little interview
with Willie Nelson. I was notallowed on the bus, which I was
a little bummed about. But whenthey opened that door, that puff of
(01:58:39):
smoke man, and it was likewhoah, Yeah, I was a happy
interview. All right, here's aweird one for you. At number four,
three hundred and fifty three, Ballerinasbroke a getness world record in New
York and they were all doing thetippy toe thing right, so it was
they broke a reader three hundred andfifty three. Have you ever tried to
(01:59:00):
break a world record? Have youever even thought about it? No?
I just watched on TV. Justwait, But there's nothing that you're like
some Okay, one time, myneighbor and I we decided, hey,
we're gonna throw a nerve football backand forth, and we're gonna do it
for twenty four hours. And sowe're even like sitting in lawn chairs inside
his garage and finally my mom comesout and she's like, what the hell
(01:59:24):
are you doing? We're breaking aworld record? She goes. Do you
know what the world record is?No? Did you contact anybody? Oh?
So we weren't allowed to try thatanymore. All right, here's the
last one for you. Would youlike to see that JJ to JJ pass?
And here Paul Allen on the call. I love Paul l Yeah,
(01:59:47):
you know, I love Paul, but yes, I would. Yeah,
And I think the reason why ishe's young. They're both young, you
know, just like Green Bay.You know, Anna Rodgers has all these
young wide receivers, right, youknow, so mentally they're on two different
stages. So having Jordan Love comein there, whether he can communicate with
(02:00:10):
the younger guys because damn near thesame age, right, it kind of
worked out better. It's like theold guy dating a young girl. What
do you have in common? No? Nothing? Right? So I think
it's gonna I think I would loveto see it because, you know,
I think he'll bring the energy thatwe need when it comes to the draft
though. And I don't know ifyou've been following enough or whatever, but
(02:00:30):
we got eleven and we got twentythree. Would you like to see Quazy
and Koc move up and try togo get like a JJ. Now they're
saying Daniels is kind of dropping downa little bit, or would you like
to sit there at eleven and maybeget a Pennix junior? I would sit
(02:00:55):
I said, I'm in the sameboat. I also said once on the
air that I think we should goeleven and twenty three back to back quarterbacks
and let them let it. Soif you build it out, Pixy,
yeah, Pennix and vote Knicks, here we go. Let's just see who
which one works now for me?But I just don't see a big difference
of you know, of a playerwith these quarterbacks, Like there's no one
(02:01:15):
that is like excites me, youknow, I haven't seen it in the
draft since like Pastck Mahomes and AndrewLuck, like Angel Luck was my class.
Like he's the only one that canstart on one hash and throw an
out route to the left, yeah, to the other sideline, Like that's
just something that you don't see,right, So I don't think we're losing
anything. If if there's if thatguy is there, pick the best guy
(02:01:38):
right and go with it. Yeahyeah yeah, and pick it confidently.
And you gotta trust Kevin O'Connell withhis offense and his ability to work with
quarterbacks, and I mean, ifhe finds quarterback he wants and they can
get him, then go and gethim. Yes, here's another last question
for you here, justin Jefferson. What does it that makes him so damn
(02:01:58):
good in your opinion? I mean, is it the execution, is it
the precision? Is it? Oris it just said he's just one of
them dudes. I think he's oneof them dudes. And he just is
a football minded guy. I meanhe I think he studies tape, he
understands and plus having that chemistry withthe quarterback regardless who it is. And
(02:02:18):
I know we had some changes withquarterbacks coming in and that's hard because like
year was brutal to watch. Likethe reason some of the hits that he
takes is, you know, thethrow you know, and you're not used
to it. When you're comfortable withsomebody, they know you, you know
them, you know, and youknow that they're going to be at that
(02:02:40):
spot right there, right so youtrust them that he's gonna make the play.
And that's being that guy, youknow, that's he just makes plays,
you know, throw it up andgive it to me. But that
comes off of confidence, and thatcomes off of practice too, because they
make the same plays and practice,I promise you. But as a wide
receiver, you have to trust thatthe ball's there because they they are seeing
(02:03:00):
what you're not seeing right as party, it's like what's coming to hurt you?
So they threw all behind you.So sometimes there's fans would be like,
oh, I was terrible throwing throughit behind him, and he threw
it behind him because this guy's comingfrom this side. Oh yeah, so
he saw that coming and didn't wantto get this guy hurt. Yeah.
Was. It's usually also you know, the linebackers people have a certain depth
to get to him right, andus as wide receivers have yards to get
(02:03:24):
to it. Ye, So youmake that difference. You know, if
it's a sixteen yard dig route andthey're dropping at twelve, you better not
be turning at fourteen because it's justa small window. Get them two extra
yards the windows right there. Soit's it's a lot on us too to
be able to make sure that weget our depth and get to the right
spot every time. And it's tough. It's tough. Yeah. Michael Floyd
(02:03:45):
is our guest here, and Igot one more for you. I told
Joe's it. But I'm just wondering. I'm just wondering. We love our
Minnesota guys. Don't wait. Comeon, my brother in law. This
guy right here with the hat man, he's the heckler, he texted,
text me he was gonna be thatguy. You know what, You're going
(02:04:06):
out to sell a house, doyou ever put on the ring and then
while you're showing them the house, like just search scratching your head just so
they can see their ring, Like, I don't know. I mean,
I think this for you is nice. Now, So I door knot.
So I go up someone I youknow, I talk to them. I
say, hey, I know you'resign your home. You know because I
(02:04:30):
talked to Cancels and Expires, peoplewho already had a realtor right and they
couldn't get it done. So Igo and pitch myself to them, saying,
hey, I can get the jobdone. Here's my card. I
would love to meet with you,and I handed on with your right hand.
But it's a conversation starter. Ohfor sure, you know, because
they want to know and I willexplain. Yeah, I tell you that
(02:04:50):
this is an advantage of you know, playing in the NFL you know.
Yes, this guy might that hastwenty years I mean in uh really state,
But he can't give you the exposureof your home like I can't.
Right, Yeah, I promise youthat. Yeah exactly. That is so
sweet. Well, and you playedthat man here is in the NFL.
You've got a Super Bowl ring on. You've earned that right to do that.
(02:05:12):
So, my old man, thishas been an actual blast. I
appreciate it. Thank you, MichaelFloyd, you and your ladies and gentlemen who
