(00:00):
It's a new episode of the WillJust Agree to Disagree Podcast. I'm Beyonce
Fox and I am rolling solo today. My co host, Ryan Lee is
somewhere being amazing. He's probably withhis other gig. You know, he
works for the White Sox too.Okay. Oh yeah, Ryan's big time
around here, Okay. Or hemay be out of town doing something fabulous.

(00:23):
Ain't no telling where Ryan is,but trust and believe he's doing something
real big. So I'm rolling solotoday and I am happy to be here
with you. And I want tointroduce a very special person to me.
She's my sorority sister, and sheis also a family nurse practitioner at the
University of Chicago Medicine, Donna ChristianHarris Hayesis. Welcome, Hey, how

(00:47):
are you? I am of course, I am so excited to have you
on because you are, like Isaid, a family nurse practitioner, and
you are also the committee chair forthe Health and Will Committee. It's an
initiative that we have with our sororityLambdam You Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha

(01:07):
Sorority Incorporated, and we are excitedto be presenting a community blood drive on
Saturday, July thirteenth and talk aboutour sponsor of the blood drive. Versity
Blood Donation Center will be sponsoring thisevent. They are a nonprofit organization that
provide blood and blood products to hospitalsand patients. The specific goal is to
provide patients in the Roseland community andeven if you're not located in the Roseland

(01:32):
community, we still want you tocome out to our blood drive. Donald
Christian Harris, if you could talkabout that. Yes, we have a
blood drive this Saturday, July thirteenthat the CROC Center from ten am to
two thirty pm. And the blooddonation of blood can help save lives for
many illnesses, sickle cell anemia tobe one of them. And we have

(01:55):
a special guest, Billy Garrett, who's a former professional basketball player and a
sickle cell survivor, who will alsodiscuss how receiving blood has helped his life
and help him to become a warriorwell as a nurse practitioner. Though,
just tell us what the importance ofgiving blood is other than you know,

(02:16):
the fact that it can save lives. Talk about just what people go through
when they donate blood and why it'sso urgent and so important, especially in
our communities. So when a personloses blood or need blood for a medical
condition, it can be an urgentneed, and we want to make sure
that we have the blood that peopleof color need. Are common blood types,

(02:39):
specifically OH positive, and a lotof times we don't get enough blood
that can take care of us.So we're really urgent people of color to
come out and donate blood. Whatwe ask you to do is, you
know, eat, have a wellbalanced meal before, try to hydrate,
and drink lots of water. Wehave snacks. The whole process may take

(03:01):
about thirty to forty five minutes frombeginning to end. Okay. Is there
a certain age limit for donating bloodeighteen years an older okay? And any
certain health restrictions. For instance,if someone has high blood pressure or they're
on medication, are they able todonate as well? They can donate as
long as their numbers are normal. At the time of donation. We will

(03:23):
do a quick check of blood pressureand also check the person's blood level to
make sure they have enough blood intheir body to share without causing them harm.
Ah. Okay, that's a goodpoint, and we're also so excited
not only because we're having this greatblood drive, but we have a very
special guest, professional basketball player BillyGarrett Junior. He's going to be joining

(03:44):
us. He also is a sicklecell warrior, the first player in the
NBA to play in the NBA withsickle cell disease. And you mentioned that
it's important that people donate blood becausewhat is the correlation between sickle cell and
blood donation. So with sickle cell, the red blood cells, instead of
being round and smooth, they canform an irregular shape, making it hard

(04:10):
for them to pass through the bloodstream and that can cause the blood to
stay in one place and that willcause pain in that particular area. So
we need that person to get fluid, and sometimes they need blood because their
blood count level will drop and thata drop in blood count level can put
strain on the heart. Wow,there's so much that we don't think about,

(04:34):
you know, when we read aboutdifferent things, different diseases and the
importance of giving blood. I wasn'teven aware of that myself. So thank
you for that information. And notonly is Billy Garrett Junior a sickle cell
warrior, he's an advocate, he'san author, he has a book out
as well, so it's going tobe pretty cool to be able to meet

(04:55):
him. He will be on siteand again, this is happening this Saturday
thirteenth at at the Croc Center.Yes, I love all the staff over
at the Croc Center. The CrocCenter is located twelve fifty West one hundred
and nineteenth in Chicago, Illinois.Right, it's literally right off of I
fifty seventh and one hundred and nineteenth. You can't miss it. And what

(05:16):
are the hours of the blood drive? From ten am to two point thirty
pm. We will also provide snacksand water, So please come out,
bring your family for this important event. And Billy will also have information on
his book called Oh to the Warrior. Nice. Okay, great, We're
looking forward to this community blood drive. It's open to the public and it's

(05:39):
absolutely free. You can donate bloodif you are at least eighteen years or
older. Correct, yes, Sobring out the entire family and come and
have a good time. And youjust know that you will be saving possibly
saving someone else's life with your blooddonation exactly now, is it important that

(06:00):
people know what their blood type isor that will be determined once they donate
the blood. It will be determinedonce they donate blood. We also do
a screener where we go through healthquestions and again we also assess your blood
pressure and we check your hematica aHEUMO globe to find out if you have
enough blood available to donate the waywe don't want to cause harm to the

(06:23):
participant. Well, thank you again. Donna Christian Harris, family nurse practitioner
at the University of Chicago Medicine. We will see you on Saturday. This
Saturday, July thirteenth, ten amto two thirty pm at the CROC Center
for the lambdam U Omega Chapter ofAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. They're presenting
a blood drive again. It's freeand open to the public and a big

(06:46):
special thanks to our sponsor, VersityBlood Centers. Come on out and help
save some lives. We appreciate youso much. Thank you for being on
today and thank you for having meon behalf of my co host Ryan Lee.
