(00:00):
It is another episode of the willJust Agree to Disagree podcast? I'd be
on s thoughts, Hey Ryan, what's going on much as well? Just
another day, another beautiful fall day, and I'm trying to bring up some
info here. Yeah, you've beengood. I've been. I've been you
know when you're just like, you'vebeen out of here fast. I'm just
(00:22):
trying to say, why am I? Oh? Okay, am I silenced
again to ask you that again? So let's uh, let's address the elephant
in the room. You guys didnot see a video episode, but you
did hear and for the elephant, you never heard the term. Yeah,
okay, Uh, you guys didnot see a video episode, but you
(00:43):
did hear an episode on iHeartRadio app. Because I never pressed record the last
time that we filmed this episode. And that happens a lot. I mean,
it's just happening lately to a lotof people. I did a whole
like segment for something the other dayand the person who was supposed to hit
record never recorded it. You cando the session all over again, which
is fine. I mean, thingshappen in life, no big deal.
Yeah, So that's why you guysdid not see us but are we recorded
(01:07):
now? I think we are,and you know, if we're not,
I mean, oh wow, whichis here? Oh wow? For a
good time? Long time? Yeah? You sent me this a while ago.
Yeh. This is according to ablog. It says that John Legend
opens up about how limiting his socialmedia use has improved his mental health,
and he says, I quote,it was just a lot. What are
your thoughts man? We've had thisdiscussion how many times ago, numerous times
(01:32):
on this podcast, and you evenpersonally took a break because you felt like
you were going through the same typeof situation, like it mentally was draining
you. So for the benefit ofthose who may not have seen that podcast,
because that was quite a while ago, Yeah, why did you take
a break from social media? Howlong was your break? I took a
good It was like a good threeweek break, from two to three week
(01:53):
from break from social media. Now, granted disclaimer, because of the job
they were and it's a little differentwhen I was doing the morning show I
was with my Kiss of Film show. I would have to get on you
know, look up some things orwhatnot, post some things on social media
for the show. But for mepersonally, when I left work I had
to do with detox. Why I'vespoken on this on this podcast and this
day and age millennials, we allcan compare and drive ourselves crazy. And
(02:16):
you can find yourself comparing on igto what's fake, made up, edit
it to be what somebody wants itto think, and it will drive yourself
crazy thinking I don't have this,I'm not looking like this. I want
this, that they got this.So I had to say, held on,
hold on, hold on, bro, you are literally letting comparison,
(02:36):
which is the devil really take over? And it's getting bad? And I
had to say, where is itgetting bad at? Where's the root of
it? And I felt like itwas in social media. Now I have
not taken a drastic break like thatsince, but what I've done instead is
I'm very limited on what I'm onsocial media looking at or how I'm using
(02:58):
it. How do you do thatthough? How can you limit what you're
looking at? Like, if you'rescrolling, let me tell you one thing,
something that gets your Let me tellyou one thing. If nobody does
not know the mute button, ohI will mute. No no, no,
no no no no. Notifications haveturned off. There are certain accounts
that I can mute on social media, So why are you even following them?
(03:19):
Because you could be close with somebodyyou just don't like the content they
want to post it you meet them. Okay, Also, how I limit
I'm not on social media all dayevery day just looking and scrolling. I
say, I'm on YouTube, I'mwatching a logger now, or I'm watching
an interview that I like watching interviewsbecause we're in this industry, I'm doing
different things on social media versus justscrolling, scrolling, scrolling scrolling. I'm
(03:44):
also not feeling like I'm rushing againsttime that I have to post post posts.
I gotta post in the moment,I gotta I will post when I
feel like posting, And a lotof that time just came with time and
maturity and learning what works for meand what works. You know. What
I'm saying so is maturity And I'mnot saying as an age thing. I'm
saying as your growth on where youare as a person. You know,
(04:05):
you said a lot of times becauseyou're a millennial, I'm a generation I
hate the word, but yes,okay, you're a millennial. I'm a
generation xer. So there is adifference in age obviously, And I just
think though, because I know peopleyour age and younger who feel the way
I do. And then I noticepeople my age that are like, man,
(04:27):
I'm on social media twenty four toseven. I'm like, can we
agree not an ageing? Can weagree? It is an age thing in
a sense. I honestly think yourdemo is taking over social media more than
mine. The way to my Facebookis all that of your age group.
And I'm like, y'all be onhere all day, every day, Instagram
(04:48):
and TikTok that it's really flip flopping. It really is for my generation.
One thing that we do now andI do what often, is we'll post
photo dumps and I'll have a wholebunch of photos that y'all never saw,
whole bunch of things that I did, and I will dump it at once.
Yeah. Also, one thing thatI'm very strategic now on is when
I'm out of town, when I'mwith the family, if I'm in the
(05:10):
Carolinas, I'm not on social media. One because of safety, but also
i want to be present and enjoyingthat moment, and I'll worry about posting
it how it's gonna look what I'llworry about that later. Now. Social
media is very important. I lovesocial media, don't get it twisted.
I love it, but I loveit where I will get on it when
I want to, like, don'tdictate when I get on it. I
(05:31):
will post things that I want theworld, not that I want, but
that I don't mind the world knowingit, you know, like if I'm
at an event or a concert orwhatever. But you're never, and I
mean, you're never going to seethose things that I hide to my heart.
You're never gonna see pictures of meand my family. You're never gonna
(05:53):
never because there are some things thatjust remain private. I have a very
public job, so I can't havethe whole, my whole life displayed on
social media. So in that regard, I'm very private when it comes to
certain things. But if I'm ata restaurant or at a concert or what
that stuff that's frivolous, of courseI'll post that. It's not a big
(06:14):
deal. Yeah, I mean,I definitely agree with Jonathan. Though Jonathan
John, I definitely agree. Idefinitely agree. Though maybe it is I
would assume it's John, it's JohnStevens. Okay, thank you for his
full name. Wait, is itnot legend at all? No, it's
John Stephens Rogers. But j Ivythe poet. Hey, j I from
(06:38):
here in Chicago. A said, man, you're a legend, and he
became John Legend. Wow, haveno idea. I do agree because even
with what he said, even withme, since I took the big break,
I pulled back now and it does. It will help with your mental
health on the weekends besides when I'mlike again, when I'm working, different
(06:59):
story. But if I'm not workingon the weekends, I'm either doing what
I'm doing or I'm not trying tobe on it unless I want to be.
And I felt like for the longest, because social media is so it's
everything in this day and age,I don't know how to say it.
It can have a grasp on yourmental and your mental health in your head
because if all you're doing is grollingand we're in a day and age that
(07:20):
half of the things you see onthere is fake. Right today, I
said, it has something to dowith age to a certain extent, but
a lot of it has to dowith who you are as a person,
your integrity, your values. Youknow what I'm saying, because you can
take somebody who's thirty that's your age, right, yes, And then you
can take someone who's my age.I know people my age who are still
(07:40):
like, ooh man, my neighborjust got a corvette. Let me post
what I just got. And I'mlike, you're a grown man, what
are you doing right now? Youknow what I'm saying. And then you
can take a thirty two year oldor twenty eight year old and they're like,
oh my god, I just gotmy doctorate. I'm focused. Let
me get off social media. Igotta get this bag. WHOA. I
(08:00):
see it all and I'm very like, this is so interesting. It's crazy.
I will say it's crazy though, how social media even and I actually
love it. Like my parents areon social media and I actually kind of
love it when they be like didyou see on Instagram? They said,
And I'm like, you're telling andsome of the things I'm like, I
literally one time actually shout out tomy dad. He broke the news to
(08:20):
me that Beyonce's mom was getting adivorce from her husband. He told me
he saw it on social media twoweeks before it came out, and I
told him I said that, getoff of Instagram and whatever sites you are
looking at on Instagram. That's nottrue. Lo and behold. Two weeks
later, when it broke that theygot it, I said, oh my
(08:41):
god, you saw it on socialmedia and you were right. Wow.
So it's funny how it's just changed. And I like, in a sense
what I do love though, AndI've said this before, I love for
you guys. I've said this onmy podcast. The majority of our family
live in the Carolina. It's likewe're the only ones here in Chicago.
I talked to my family social mediaall the time, like my cousins,
(09:03):
my extended cousins, my second thirdcousins. I feel like we talk on
social media all time. So whenI see you, it's like, what's
up? You know what I'm saying. Where before you would have to call
him text, which we still do, but I feel like social media I
can keep updated with so for that, I do love it. I tell
listeners all the time, you know, some people want your cell phone and
I'm just like, I don't know. That's a little personel So I'm like,
(09:26):
look, I talk to my familyon social media, so I'm to
talk to you on social media too, just DM me this instant message me
whatever you gotta do. It's likethat's a form of communication. So but
yeah, John Legend, being thebig celebrity that he is, that just
tells you that even someone on hisat his status, you know, he's
a family man, four kids, wife, traveling on the voice, making
(09:52):
albums. Like if someone like aJohn Legend says, whoa slide back off
this social media what the average personis thinking? Because John is not competing
with somebody who just got a newCorevett, and he's not the only one.
Selena Gomez is very open about takingbreaks from social media. A lot
of artists are. I mean,it's they are human at the end of
(10:13):
the day, just like we are, so it doesn't surprise me. And
some housewives too. I saw oneof those entertainment shows Access Hollywood Entertainment tonight.
I can't recall, but some ofthe housewives were like, you know
what, the social media thing isso overrated, blah blah blah blah blah.
And I was like, oh mygod, that's reality. Starts saying
that, But yeah, it's justit is what it is. But you
have to I think one of thethings that I have learned since taking that
(10:35):
break is you really have to controlhow you use it, what you use
it for, and how much youuse of it. So for me,
I've been able to grow to belike, it doesn't bother me no more,
and I get on it, andI will look at content. Once
I feel like I'm getting irritated,or once i feel like, oh I'm
looking at this too much, I'mcomparing, I gotta get all Okay,
So you still kind of get theurge a little or ah, I think
(10:56):
that's something, Yeah, a littlebit. I just think it just depends
on what I'm looking at and whereI'm wanting in my life. Oh okay,
that makes what I'm saying. Thatmakes if there's something that I'm like,
Lord, I'm praying, Lord,I need this, Lord, someone
else get it. You're like, okay, why not me? Lord?
Yes? I guess so in thatsense, yes, But like I said,
because of maturity and now growing,I'm understanding, I'm gonna congratulate you
(11:22):
because I know if he did itfor you, he'll do it exactly.
Changes. Something that really took outstood out when you were going through your
detox. If you will. Awhile ago, you said that people your
age millennials, they will go toa particular steakhouse in Chicago that I won't
mention, and they'll just order appetizers, something really small and take a photo
(11:48):
like yeah, I'm here at sucha sad to make their friends think,
oh my gosh, still do itto this. I know people that have
taken Yes, I'm gonna yes,I know a lot. This is when
an age thing comes in because I'msitting there like I just had that for
dinner last night. But unfortunately Idon't think age because I know grown people
(12:09):
that still do that. I literallyactually not gonna say names. I literally
just had a conversation with somebody aboutthis two days ago that I know the
reality of an older person of what'sgoing on in their life because we talk
and I know what I see onsocial media. Ah, gotcha? Okay,
And I know somebody who literally like, man, you see so and
(12:31):
so, and I said, Iplay along with it, but I'm I'm
like, yeah, interesting, Yeah, Okay. It's the power unfortunately that
social media has that we feel likesome people feel like you have to present
even on mine, like I trieddoing all that. I don't do it
take all the edits off. Let'sI want social media to get back to
just being what it was when itfirst started. And I will just leave
(12:54):
with this. Just be true toyourself, like, don't fake the funk.
I mean, don't let peer pressurerun your life like that. It's
really not that serious. If someonehas something, congratulate them, keep it
moving or you don't need to haveto say a word. Just work on
getting what you want in life andjust take your time. Social media is
(13:16):
a trip. It's very deceiving andit's not what we all think gets cracked
up to be. At the endof the day, I've noticed that people
are a lot of people, notjust celebs, but a lot of people
are kind of slacking back on socialmedia because they're finding out like okay,
and with AI and with these editingthings on the phone and stuff. Now
it's like, okay, that's crazy. There's an old saying that says,
(13:39):
believe none of what you hear inhalf of what you see nowadays, none
of what you see or hear becausesomebody could be looking a whole different way
through AI or something like that.So just really be careful with social media.
Don't let it run your life. You can see a person look one
way on a photo, complete oppositein person. Sure can. Yeah,
