It's well this Wednesday right here onsunny when I was six point five.
Sponsored by the Valley Health System. This week we're talking to doctor Eli Schneck.
Good morning, how are you.I'm doing great, Thank you for
having me well. We are veryexcited to talk with you today and to
tell people more how they can safelyenjoy Las Vegas's high summer temperatures with practical

(00:21):
tips because we know it gets hothere in the desert. So doctor Eli,
please tell everybody where you work intown and what you do. Sure.
I'm a family medicine resin physician. That means I'm finishing up my final
bit to my training in family medicine. We like to keep people out of
the hospital, to prevent people andkeep people healthy and safe and let them
really enjoy the all the wonderful thingsthat Las Vegas does. And I'm really

(00:41):
excited to be here to talk toyou all about how to stay safe in
Las Vegas during our summer months andkeep yourself out of the hospital, keep
yourself out of the er, andmost importantly, have a lot of fun
this great city. Absolutely, Ilove that that's what everybody wants to do,
right, So let's kick things offand talk a little bit more about
what some of the essential items peopleshould have with them when navigating through Las

(01:03):
Vegas is high summer temperatures, andhow they can really, you know,
ensure that they're going to have asafe and enjoyable experience in the summer.
So first most important thing you wantto bring when you come step outside in
the morning is make sure you havewater. Make sure you have water in
your car and your bag. Makesure you have access to water, because
not only is it hot in thesummer in Las Vegas, but we also
have no humidity, so we losea lot more water than people do down

(01:26):
in Florida or other places that havepretty low humid is So water's number one.
Make sure you always have a glassof water, either within reach or
you know where to find some.Awesome. Yeah, that's definitely a helpful
tip. I feel like a lotof us, you know, we live
very busy lives. We forget somethingas important as just having water with you.
Now, what you know throughout theday. I've always heard kind of

(01:46):
the myth, like maybe it's nota myth, maybe you'll debunk it here
today, but I've always heard likethree o'clock avoid being outside at three o'clock.
But what are the best times ofthe day to explore Las Vegas during
the summer to avoid the peak heat, and then what activity should people maybe
stay away from during those hot times. So the great thing about Las Vegas
is that we're twenty for our cities. There there's always something to do and

(02:07):
always something safe to do at anytime of the day. Best time to
go out and be outsides either inthe morning or in the evening during the
hot summer days. If you wantto go and explore the outdoors, like
if you want to go and exploreRed Rock Canyon, but you want to
stay safe and stay cool, youcan always do the beautiful scenic drive that
they have over there. You canstay in your car, be around nature
and be in your nice air conditioncar with your glass of water right nearby.

(02:29):
Other fun things to do, youknow, in the middle of the
day when it's really hot out.We have a bunch of great casinos,
but we also a bunch of greatfriendly activities for kids to do. So
you can always go to the aquariumright either. There's a lot of great
things. Area fifty one is niceand cool inside, so there's a lot
of or sorry area fifteen not fiftyone, but lots of great things to
do both inside and outside during thesummer. In the middle of day,
it's always good to stay inside. If you want to be outside in the

(02:51):
middle of the day and you wantto don't want to be in an air
conditioned environment like your car, youcan always go to one of the pools.
Make sure you have your glass ofwater nearby, because even outside in
the huts summer sun in a pool, you can still get dehydrated. Make
sure you also when you're outside you'rewearing sunscreen. So we want to have
sunscreen if we're in a pool,we want to wear sunscreen at least SPF
thirty Okay, every hour if you'rein water, and then every two hours

(03:12):
if you're not in water. Andthen be mindful that even if you're out
and not you know, really youmaybe covered with clothing. Make sure that
clothing has is able to protect youfrom the sun. Because of the strength
of our summer sun down here inthe Mohave Desert, it's sometimes it going
to do to wear sunscreen underneath yourclothing just to protect yourself from getting sunburned.
Because you can't get sunburned even throughclothing. Sure, no, absolutely,
I know. I have a twoyear old son, so I always

(03:32):
look for, you know, theswimsuits that have the SPF. You know
that they say that's becoming more andmore popular. But so is it a
myth? Like is three o'clock likethe prime time you should really avoid being
outside? So three o'clock's kind ofa myth. It depends on you know,
what time of year it is.Okay, best time to avoid being
outside is between nine and four pm. Oh wow, Okay, yep,

(03:54):
that's when the sun is going tobe strongest in our Nevada desert. Okay,
you know it's all about your judgmentand your comfort level. Yeah.
Absolutely, Always be self aware wheneveryou're outside. Make sure that you're staying
cool, that you're not overheated, that you're not getting a little confused,
that you're not getting a little tired. If you are, take a break,
have a glass of water, findsome air conditioning or some shade.

(04:14):
Right, don't try to push themost important thing when staying safe in the
nevadaicone is being self aware and recognizing, hey, I need to take a
break and be okay taking a breakbecause where a city that likes to have
fun and you know, taking abreak is what we like to do.
Yep, that's not a bad thing. Now, how can visitors stay hydrated
while exploring here in Las Vegas duringthe summer? And what are those strategies
for really recognizing and preventing heat relatedillnesses. I know you made a good

(04:39):
point, doctor Eli when you said, don't push it, But what else
should people be looking for? Peopleshould be you know, trying to avoid
drinking alcohol during the hottest parts ofthe day, you know, minimizing caffeine.
Those are big things that can dehydrasand make it harder for us to
be self aware and recognize when we'regetting dehydrated and getting overheated. I mean,
I think it's I think it's important. You hit it right on the
head when you said avoid stuff likealcohol, caffeine, anything that could possibly

(05:01):
mess with your mind and not makeyou aware of how hot it is exactly
or how hot you are. Youknow, any mind alter sceptance can do
that, whether it's cannabis, whetherit's alcohol. But sometimes just being like
really caught up in the moment, and you know, you got to be
self aware and got to be safe. Absolutely. Now, in addition to
air conditioned spaces, what are somealternative locations or activities in Las Vegas that

(05:24):
offer relief from the summer heat allowingvisitors to continue enjoying their experience safe safely.
So pools are a great one ifin to Las Vegas. There's a
pool almost on every corner out here, so spending time in pools is a
great place to stay cool. There'sa lot of tours out now that will
take you out into the you know, natural areas in their conditioned vehicles.
Those are great options. Yeah. And then when you are exploiters options,

(05:45):
make sure you we're in closing that'sbreathable and allows for good heat exchange.
Yep. But I think one ofthe most important tips always good to keep
top of mind is have that waterhandy, yes exactly, no matter what
you water and the sunscreen. Waterin the sunscin the two biggest things that
are can keep you safe and awayfrom away from the hospital, which is
what we all want to do.And you said something earlier, doctor Eli.
Minimum SPF thirty, minimum SPF thirty. Now when I see on the

(06:10):
shelves like a SPF seventy five, those things really work. For some people
who have very light skin and areat very high risk of getting exposed to
the sun related damagees. Those patientsmay benefit from it, but most people,
SPF thirty is great. Okay,it does the job. Water and
SPF thirty. Doctor Eli, thankyou so much for being on with us
during Wellness Wednesday. We appreciate it. Thank you so much for having me.

(06:30):
It's been a lot of fun.
