(00:00):
Our next guest is a senior NBAinsider for T and T and Bleacher Import
on Twitter at Chris B. Haynesand Chris Haynes is back on the Rip
City Drive. Chris, it's greatto have you back on the show.
But first things first, before weget to basketball. How are things going
at Charlene's beauty supply down in OakGrove, California. I'll appreciate the plugs
that I'm actually right access in thecar right outside of the store right now,
(00:25):
just kind of keeping the eye onher. But now she's doing a
great, great job where a monthin the Sacramento b newspapers came a couple
of days ago and interview her andtook photos and video of the store.
So we'll have we'll have a storyin the Sacramento bum sometime later this week.
So we're business is picking up andit's going good. We've got so
(00:47):
much support. And I encourage anybodyout there in the Pacific buff West,
if they're ever in the Sacramento area, please please stop by and I would
love and if it's this summer,I would love to check you out out
pictures and you know, talk somehoops. If you're out here, so
thanks. Chat. Well, youknow what I think it's great about this,
Chris, is that how cool isit to be able to put something
(01:08):
together with your wife, a business, and then see her take it over
and have such a great time andenjoy running that thing. That's got to
be pretty cool. No, it'sit's cool, and I'm just I'm excited
for her to be able to pursueher passion. You know, I've been
traveling and I've been in this, you know, covering the Leaf for thirteen
years now, and I've always beenon the road and she's she's had to
(01:30):
handle everything at the house with thekids and everything. So this is her
first time being able to break freeand do something that she wanted to do
on a personal level. So I'mI'm happy I'm able to support her in
that progress. And you know,it's just cool, man. I love
seeing her in this element, so, you know, looking forward to seeing
(01:52):
what she does with it. Areyou saying though, that you'd be hanging
around the store in case somebody comesby, you might take a selfie or
sign something for or something like areyou? Are you kind of there all
the time? I'm not. I'mnot a big time like that guy father,
I'm I'm kind of in between whatI want to do. I was
supposed to actually leave about thirty minutesto go and go to the house.
(02:13):
But I remember when she told meto go home today, she told me
to clean the living room in thebathroom. I'm I'm trying to like spall
or avoid it altogether. I getit. Yeah, well, Chris,
let's start with this. Thursday nightis the draft, as you know,
the Portland Trailblazers having the number threepick. What would you say as to
(02:34):
present chance that Portland trades that numberthree pick. It doesn't sound like it
right now. It doesn't sound Imean, a lot can happen for you
know, in forty hours to thedraft, but it does. It sounds
like that number three pick. Itsounds like they're going to keep that in
draft, you know, either Milleror or Scoop. So um, a
(02:59):
lot can change. But the intelthat I've been gathering up to the point
leads me to bleed. I thinkPortland might draft the player at three.
Okay, let's take Let's say theytake Scoot, He's the guy left for
them to take. What does thatdo with Damian Lillard? In Portland.
I think Dame will have a decisionto make. Obviously, Dame doesn't want
(03:22):
to go through a rebuild. Hewants he would rather they use all their
their assets, that the valuable assets, that is, to try to acquire
proven talent. He wants to winand wants to win now. So you
know, that's the decision Dame willhave to make. It forgot to that
point. I forgot to a pointwhere they took a player and had had
(03:44):
the intention of keeping the player. So that's the decision Dame will have to
make. From what I understand,Chris said, Scoot is strictly a point
guard, He's not like c.J or Aunt and that he could move
over and play the off guard.Would that be, you know, a
further complication for Dame staying, Idon't know. I think you know,
(04:09):
from what I'm hearing, it soundslike, you know what New Orleans Scoop
would would like to be in NewOrleans. Um, New Orleans would like
to have him as well. Soyou can't rule out, um, what
New Orleans is trying to do andin trying to con up in the drafts
and be able to take him.So, uh, you know, to
(04:30):
ask you a question about Scooting game. I know, um, I know
Scoot like Dame He's He's referenced gameand in previous interviews. But it's a
it's a really a tough question becauseI can't look at you know, I
don't have a crystal ball to giveus say what's going to happen. But
all I all I know is basedoff of what Damon said is that he
(04:51):
wants to win now in and themost valuable chip the Portland Trippers have is
that number three pick, and wewe know Anthony Simon's is available for the
right deal, and you would thinkif there was, if there was a
deal out there, it would bethat pick with science. So you have
(05:11):
to I think we just got towait to see how this thing plays out
here in Portland. They've done agood job of pretty much keeping you know,
things pretty close to the best.Let's pretending to you know who they're
talking to and all that. Butyou know there there'll there'll be big decisions
to be had by the Blazers inby Dame Chris. Do you think New
(05:32):
Orleans would make Zion available in atrade like that, Yes, yes,
I do, Zion. Zion isavailable for the right deal. That sounds
like a deal to me. Doesit sound like a good deal to you?
That the two for Zion? Imean, yeah, Threezi, I
(05:53):
would be definitely intrigued by that.Um. I think one thing that any
team that's interested in Zion, onething that they would want to look at
is his medical. We know that, we know how he's you know,
been having a weight issue ever sincehe stepped into the league. But um,
I think what teams want to gettheir hands on if they really,
(06:15):
if they really are serious as themedical, like, is there anything that's
really going to cause further problems withyou know, going down the road,
because that's really going to dictate Uhow feasible it is to trade for him.
So that's that's that's going to bea delimma right there. Waiting to
see if we get to that, get get to that point, wait to
(06:38):
see what that medical shows. Hey, Chris, you know Dame has mentioned
players before like Bam or Michael guyshe would like to play with. Would
you say that Zion would fit thatmold of players a Dame would enjoy playing
with if he had the opportunity.I think so, if if Zion is
in the right frame of mind.Um, he's you know, if he's
ready to kind of rebuild his reputationin the league. If he's ready to
(07:02):
you know, get in get intip top shape and stay in tip top
shape. Um, I would definitelybelieve that. You know, that would
have the intrigue of Dame. Soyou just don't know, you know,
we don't We just don't know whatmindset is in. You don't know how
he feels about Portland, and youknow, there's a there's a lot to
(07:26):
be there's a lot of questions thatneed to be answered. But from a
challenge standpoint, you would be Imean, you wouldn't be doing your job
if you do. You do diligenceand look into that. Because he's when
he's healthy and he's playing, he'sdominant, and I would think a player
like that would definitely have the intereststo day. Chris, it's when when
(07:47):
you talk about Dion, it remindsme of the first time I saw him
in person. I was sitting inthe Thomas and Mac Center at Las Vegas
Summer League with you and New Orleanscame out to warm up and we saw
Zion there in the Summer League andyou turned to me and said that uniform
(08:07):
is stretched all over the front ofhim. They got to get a uniform
to fit this guy that doesn't fit. Remember that, all right? Listen,
Godfather, listen. You can't bebringing up my path a fat shaving
man. This is a different erawe're here, Godfather. He got to
be insensitive. Man, Well,I know it, but I can say
(08:31):
it because I got the same problem. So you know, I'm allowed to
say it. You know, it'slike, what the heck? You know
you mean you can make Fresnol jokesbecause you're from Fresnel. I can't do
that. So, yeah, thatwas the That was my first time seeing
him in person, and um,you know you you know, his size
(08:52):
definitely stuck out, so to speak. You gonna stop. God I'm sorry,
I'm sorry. I don't let himthat stop. You can't. Yeah,
I can't help it. You're leadingme right into these things, Godfather,
(09:16):
Godfather, Man, the times werein Godfather, Look, I think
I think again, if he can'tif he can commit, yeah, to
a regiment of physical fitness. Andyou know, say he did team up
with Dame man, Dame, wouldyou know somebody that would be in this
corner, holding them accountable, beingthere, being there with him every step
(09:39):
of the way. I personally likeit. I personally would like it,
but again it depends on his wanltnessto be in Portland, but also depends
on the medical What is what isthe medical show? Is there any degenerate
knee situations, anything that's going tobe a red flag that's gonna cause problems
(10:00):
And you know a few years downthe road, you know, those are
all things that the medical will show. So you know, if any team
is serious, that's something they'll haveto look into. Hey, Chris,
I'm wondering what you think about JoeCronin with his messaging from day one when
he took over the general manager position. He's always had the same messaging in
regards to our job and our focusis to accrue assets to put ourselves in
(10:26):
a position to build a winner aroundDame. And they even put out that
little release to the season ticket holderson lottery night that they got the number
three pick and they were focused withtheir basketball team to go out and build
a winner around Dame if they takea player. I mean, what do
you think as a result of thatchange in direction? Was it vaulting into
the top three that was unexpected tokind of change their thinking there. What's
(10:48):
your take on that? Yeah, getting into that top three, I think
that's probably what what change they're rightthere? You know, they had they
had a good road, they hada good they had a good boost,
pretty good boost right there. Andso yeah, that's that. Without without
having talked to Joe in a minute, I would that would leave me to
(11:09):
believe that. Yeah, I think, Um, then coming away with that
pick kind of changed course a littlebit. Chris, we all know that.
Uh so I n spent last summera lot of last summer in the
Portland area rehabbing, and do youhave any idea what he thought of the
city and this area while he washere. I don't got fire. I
(11:33):
really don't have a relationship. DesignWe've spoken a few a few on a
few occasions, just you know, just we're doing the work that I do
with T and T. But no, I don't know. But yeah,
I know he spent time trying toget himself in shape in Portland, but
I don't and I don't know thatGame has has talked to him about that,
(11:54):
So yeah, I wouldn't know.Do you think the Blazers are considering
that right now, Zion, Idon't I don't know if that. I
don't know if that, well, listen, I don't know for sure if
there's been an offer made yet consideringit. They definitely have to have talked
about it for sure. Well, then you know you mentioned I ask you
(12:18):
to begin the interview in regards towhat you think they'll do, and you
think they're going to keep a player. I was wondering if some of that
coming out might be smoke screen becausethey're trying to drive up the price maybe
to get a better deal that hasn'tbeen offered yet for that number three pick.
And that's why I say that thingscan definitely change the next forty eight
hours tomorrow be forty hours to thedraft. It can change. But based
(12:41):
off of the intel I'm receiving rightnow, smoke screen or not, it
sounds like they are keeping that pick. But that can change. It can
definitely. They can be definitely tryingto drive up the market and get some
teams desperate to throwing a little bitof throwing a little bit extra. So
you know, we'll see on thatfront. But um, you know it's
(13:03):
it's going to be tough, man. It's going to be It's gonna be
tough because Scoop. You know,a lot of people believe that he's probably
the most ready rookie in this classright now, being that he played against
grown in in the G League thispast season, and they think he's gonna
be a talent man. You lookat you know, he's a physical,
(13:24):
physical specimen man, Like his bodyis NBA ready right now. And I
think he's going to be the futuresubwear. And you know another thing is,
you know, I think he's hefalls to number three because you know,
he's a point guard. He wantsto play point guard. He wants
to be a franchise point guard inthis league. And Charlotte has Lamello at
(13:48):
that spot already, and so um, and I know they're still Charlotte trying
to say that, they're still kindof waivering back and forth. I don't
know that I believe that right now. I do think it's a good,
very good shot that school goes numberthree. You know, are you tired
(14:11):
of all this stuff before the draft? Chris? It seems like this whole
issue of Dame and who the Blazersmight pick. Every day, something new
comes out where somebody says that gotsome inside information about this. You must
be sick of this because I knowwhen I was working at the orgon Yen
and even NBC. You have tochase all these rumors down. Every time
somebody says something, the boss wantsyou to go, well, is this
(14:35):
true? How come we didn't havethis? Is this true? You must
be really sick of this stuff.Yeah, I mean again, he has
to know. But you know,God, like you know, a lot
of times when these rumors surface publicly, a lot of the times we know
it already, like we've known italready, and you know, we don't
(14:58):
report it for various reasons. Maybewe're saving it for something, maybe we're
trying to something bigger, or maybewe're just like, hey, you know,
there's something I can just keep, you know, keep keep to myself
right now, wait for other partsof the storyline to develop, and you
know, maybe we're waiting for somethingelse. And so a lot of these
(15:20):
rumors, to be honest with you, I pretty much have heard already.
You know, I got them inmy notes. And then sometimes there are
some rumors that pop out here likedamn, I didn't know that. You
start going look, you know, looking in and seeing what it's about.
But God, don't know that Iget tired. Um, you know,
(15:41):
Dame's whole situation is that there's alwaysman for the last four years, it
seems like maybe even longer. Youknow, people have tried to say,
Dames, who could get out?And what's Dame's future or just keep asking
them and ask them about how doyou feel about He keeps saying the same
being over over, but you getthe field this time around that it can
(16:07):
be a real possibility of part ofparting of ways, you know, potentially,
So I don't know. It alldepends on how the Blazers handle the
draft and what Dame ultimately feels aboutthe draft. Do they feel like the
rookie that they bring in is goingto help them from day one? Because
that's what Day wants help from dayone? And so I can't say I'm
(16:33):
tired because God fins being honest withyou. This is where I make my
money. It's funny making tide.Yeah, well that brings truck stops by
your house frequently. I know that. So yeah, it's empty, it's
empty with the truck is there. We're talking with Chris Haynes from TNT here
in the Rip City Drive. Ifthere were a parting of ways, is
(16:56):
there any of these rumored trades involvinggame that makes sense to you right now?
If there were a part in theway, I mean, you have
to you know, I reported afew days ago about Miami's interests. Um,
you know they're they're monitoring the Supportlandsituation very closely. And so you
(17:18):
got Miami right there front and center. You got the Brooklyn Nets. Um,
those are all those are the teamsas are right now that I can
really see making legitimate um kitch once, um if it, if it got
to that point. Um, Butagain, there are uh, you know,
(17:40):
a multitude of different scenarios have toplay out within that time before you
even got to that point. Chris, I'm curious. We talked about Zion
already and that obviously is a realwin for the Blazers that they were to
get him. Can you think ofcan you give me some names on another
other players in the league that mightsatisfy what Dame's looking for, you know,
(18:02):
a veteran player that would get thema little deeper into the playoffs.
What who do you hear? Whodo you see that Mike fulfill that requirement.
Um, well, you know theBlazers have been rumored, you know,
with Pascal og over there in Torontoas well. You know, they've
been rumored with them. Who elseI've heard them with? Uh um,
(18:27):
trying to think who else? Said, you know, really just some quality
wing players, you know, youknow ween, you know depth? Um,
who else is somebody else I'm missing? Michael? Oh yeah, Michael
Bridginess. Of course, I don'tsee Brooklyn let letting him go. Um,
(18:48):
I don't yeah, I don't seethat. I don't see that at
all. So those are kind ofguys right there that you were kind of
hearing. But you know, Sacramentois on the chase for those two guys
in Toronto as will. So youknow it'd be you know, it would
be See how this all plays out. I'm looking forward to it. Do
you think Phoenix is going to tradeeighton to be able to add some depth,
(19:12):
which is something they lacked during theplayoffs. I think they're I think
they are looking into that for sure. I think they're looking into that.
I know they've talked with Boston.I don't know if they can get anything
done there. Um, but Yeah, they're they're looking into that. So
(19:33):
is it okay with you if youif we go ahead and report that you
said tonight that the Blazers are goingto trade the number three pick for Zion?
Is that all right with you?Say that one? Is it okay
with you if we if we reportthat you said on our show that Portum
was going to trade the number threepick for Zion? Real simple, I
(20:00):
mean, I'm just asking if it'sall right? All right? That will
be the definition of misinformation. Itis sports talk radio, Chris. I
mean, let's let's be honest aboutthat. You know, you gotta do
what you gotta do to draw me, and I just can't
