Speaker 1 (00:00):
The CEO you should know, brought to you by Roby
Foster Miller Eric Insurance. This week's CEO Terry Would, co
founder and CEO of hot Shots Shooting Center in Ashland.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good morning, Terry, Well, good morning Erin.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Thank you for coming in today.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Thank you for having us.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
All Right, So I've heard the name recently and as
we start there, maybe so I love this program because
we learn about local businesses and maybe somebody just moved
to north central Ohio Mansfield, Ashland area. They've heard the
name hot Shots Shooting Center. Tell us what you guys do.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Oh, it's an exciting place. Erin. We brought hot Shots
to the area, opened in April of this year, and
we have so much for everyone of all ages, all
skill levels with firearms, and we have indoor simulation shooting
range included in our education and training program. And the range.
(00:59):
We have four rooms that are filled with Milo's brand
new simulation equipment, the virtual simulation equipment, which is what
law enforcement and the military train on. We've brought that
to the public for their use as well.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Now, Terry, as we learn about your company here, let's
talk about in terms of ages those kind of things.
So you were kind of telling me this is for everybody, then, right,
it's for everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Erin. We actually started because I'm a shooting enthusiast myself
and so as my business partner. We both enjoy shooting
and have been so limited in the area of places
to go and actually be able to train and shoot,
and so we opened Hotshot Shooting Center so that we
could offer all ages, all skill levels. We have folks
(01:47):
that have never shot a gun before that walk in
and say can you help me? And we even have
professional shooters that come in and train, as well as
law enforcement offices.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
All Right, terrific to learn again about a local company.
Terry Wood the voice you hear this morning, co founder
CEO of hot Shots Shooting Center, located where at in Ashland.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Easy to find us, Aaron, if you're heading into Ashland
for Mansfield. We will be on the right hand side
of forty two, right in front of the Bill Harris
Dodge stores and we are at the light at forty
two and Bany Road, right between the Dodge store and
the Marathon gas station.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
All right, So the address exact address twenty one to
twelve Banny Road, South, Ashland. Phone number is four one
nine nine zero eight thirty five ninety one and the
website is Hotshots Shootingcenter dot com. You're on Facebook as well.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yes, we are and Facebook. We both Facebook and our
website aeron. We consistently post our classes that we have.
We have a lot of free classes for education for
folks as well as CCW classes, and we have a
CCW class coming up. We're kind of getting into that
time of year now where there won't be a lot
of CCW class is available, so it's a good month
(03:02):
to get your CCW or come for the class. So
we understand constitutional carry. A lot of folks don't understand
the limitations in the law that can result in a
felony if things aren't followed correctly.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Now, Terry, as we talk about your company can kind
of walk us through. I mentioned somebody's never been there before.
Talk about you know, screens just kind of paint a
picture for us of what they're going to see when
they come see you again.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Sure, when you drive up alongside our building from forty two,
you'll see how long and expansive our building is. Even
though when you pull in from the front it looks
like it's narrow, but it's a very deep building. So
when you first walk in our door, you see our
commitment and our dedication to our second Amendment. We have
a lobby as adorned with replica guns and different types
(03:50):
of historical documents on the wall. Walk back through our
hallway towards our range. We have a very large, nice
classroom on one side of the hall with big screen TV,
long oak desks and chairs. Air's a kitchenette in that
room as well, and then across the hall from that
is our lounge. I thought I was going to have
(04:11):
my speakeasy lounge, but with the western flare and the
industrial feel that we have brought, people tend to call
us the Yellowstone. So the lounge has now been called
the Yellowstone Member's Lounge. For those folks that do want
to become members, that's their lounge, and our lounge and
training room both can be rented out for events.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
How long does it take for like a session or
something like that, explain to us when they come see
you guys, kind of how long does that run?
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Sure? Well, folks can choose whether they want a thirty
minute session or a one hour session. If they want
longer than a one hour session, we can do that Also,
they can walk in to choose a time. If there's availability,
we can get them right in. They can call ahead.
They can also book their appointment online, including choosing whether
(04:59):
or not that they want to upgrade away from just
a strictly laser only weapon to an actual handgun or
an AR fifteen that has CO two in the magazine
so that we have recoil capability. Those can also be
selected online when they booked the range. Time.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
We are hearing this morning from terry Wood hot Shots
Shooting Center co founder and CEO. This week's CEO, you
should know, I think it's important to bring up. You
mentioned this earlier, but law enforcement and they're coming to
see you guys, and you guys are really probably very
key for them in the area, right.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yes, yes, so law enforcement typically the time that they've
had to train with simulation equipment. The state of Ohio
has a milo range and a mobile unit that they
will take around to every county and it hits each
office about once a year. So we just felt that
this was something that was very very important to all
of us and to the safety of our law enforcement
(05:56):
and our commitment to them. So we wanted to have
a range that was close that they could readily come
in and train in. And we've got the approval of
many law enforcement offices here in the local area, and
we're very proud of the fact that we already have
some that have been able to start their formal training
and coming in and using our facility. And we're hoping
(06:18):
that all over north central Ohio from Columbus to Sandusky,
the Medina area will also be coming in very soon.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Now, let's talk about areas you serve so here, you know, say,
maybe you know different law enforcement across the state, but
it's not just Ashland, Richland County, North central Ohio, right
that's coming to see you.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Guys, absolutely, Eric, So we are a premier destination for
shooting skills, for whether we're developing new skills honing our
current skills. Statistics say that if you don't shoot, for
every week you don't shoot, if you have trained, you'll
lose twenty percent of your skill set. So it's important.
And so many people now it's become so popular to carry,
(06:57):
they need a place to come in and develop that
muscle memory and really work on where their threat is
and what skills they have in order to protect themselves
and their loved ones.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Now, Terry, somebody may wonder this got started, you said
back in the spring. So how did the idea come
to be for you to open this.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Well, it's a pretty personal reason because my business partner
is Jan Atchison. We've been business partners for twenty five years.
We also established Classy Chassis, which is right beside us.
A lot of folks are familiar with that. It's been
there now twenty five years and still going strong. So
with a name like Classy Chassis on our truck and
(07:37):
car accessory store, you can start to imagine how nice
of a facility we've brought now to the shooting enthusiast
as well. So I was going to go over towards
North Campton to shoot at an indoor range last December
one Sunday, needed it, that's my therapy time. And the
weather was terrible, and so I sat down with another
(07:57):
cup of coffee for a minute just to pout because
I couldn't go shoot. And I thought, oh, I wish
somebody we had something in this area where I could
just go shoot some rounds. And I thought, well, that's
what we can do with the other side of this building.
We've got over three thousand square feet in there, and
that would just make a great place for a shooting range.
(08:18):
And to go with virtual simulation because it offsets the
cost of AMO. Amo's very expensive. And also knowing how
popular again it's become to conceal carry, a lot of
folks are going that route. The state of Ohio made
it available that people could constitutionally carry as well, and
people don't understand the ramifications of that and what responsibilities
come with that. So we're trying to educate and train
(08:42):
all over north central Ohio. We are the premiere Milo
simulation facility anywhere in the world. Milo has told us
they have never installed four rooms of the Milo equipment
anywhere else in the world.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
We are learning this morning about hot Shots Shooting Center
in Ashland with one of the co founders and the
CEO that is Terry Wood, this week's CEO. You should know,
so right now, roughly how many staff members do you
guys have? We have six? Okay, there are six.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
We have folks that we have an event coordinator who
is Tisha Smith and she handles anyone that has the
need for hosting a birthday party or reunion, any type
of a corporate gathering, team building, and she's our event
coordinator and we'll put the pricing together and it's very
affordable to have an event there, use our beautiful lounge,
(09:35):
maybe our corporate meeting room as well as incorporate then
some shooting time in with that for your team event.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
All right, Now, in terms of somebody coming to see you, guys,
what are the hours are you open? I guess when
are you open? What are the hours? Right now?
Speaker 2 (09:50):
We are closed on Sundays and Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
We are open from eleven to seven. The range is
open eleve into seven. Saturdays were open at nine am
until five pm. And Aaron, I also want to mention
on Saturdays, kids shoot free at sixteen and under all
kids shoot for free on Saturdays. We have three year
(10:13):
olds and five year olds that are actually starting the
journey already with their parents. They have to be accompanied
by an adult eighteen or over. It's a good wholesome
place for family and anybody that has the passion for firearms.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Now, in terms of making an appointment, can they just
walk through the door, do they need to call go
online in advance? Both? How does that work?
Speaker 2 (10:35):
All of the above aaron. Lots of times folks do.
They drive by forty two, they see us, they stop,
They say, is it possible that I could have range
time now as long as we've one of our four
shooting rooms are open, Yes, they sure can. Some folks
want to make sure that time is available, they'll book online.
We have a pretty extensive website. It's currently in the
(10:56):
process of being updated again. We want to make it
even more user friendly than it already is. Folks can
go online. They can buy gift cards on there right now,
good time of year for that. Memberships can be purchased online.
Don't have to be a member to shoot at our facility,
but you do save twenty percent on all your range
fees and we even have unlimited range time passes.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Okay, so a lot happening over in Ashland again hot
Shots Shooting Center. We are chatting this morning for a
couple more minutes with the co founder and CEO, that
is Terry Wood, this week's CEO. You should know. So
we've learned all about your company, but let's find out
about you. So let's step back to the beginning. I'm
sure people are wondering, would you please tell us where
(11:37):
was Terry Wood born.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Terry Wood was born in Frankfurt, Germany, because Terry Wood's
father was in the army, and so my folks were
in Germany station at the time. And we came back
to the States when I was nine months old.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
All right, So where where where did you kind of
grow up at in the US? Then?
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Well, started out in Mansfield in Madison School District. Moved
back to Widowville north of Miffland where my mother had
grown up, and graduated from Hillsdale High School. It's a
beautiful area and was very, very blessed to be able
to graduate from Hillsdale High School.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Yeah, Falcons great in sports, I know, sports, football, baseball,
you name it, they have softball. They have been absolutely tremendous.
All right, So tell us after high school and I
know you mentioned you own classy chassis and run that
just tell us a little bit after high school to
where you are now.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Well, after graduating from high school, I went to Ohio
Northern University in Aida, Ohio, got my bachelor's degree there.
Polar bear, right, I am a polar bear. Yes, always
a polar bear. And at my master's degree from the
University of Dayton and had worked on my doctorate at
Capella University.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
All right, great, and so I guess what kind of
urged the opening of Classy Chassis. We heard about hot
Shot Shooting Center there a little bit about Classy Chassis.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Then, okay, So Classy Chassis came about because I had
gotten into the world of finance in the automotive industry
and had been recruited taking a job in Chicago at
a very large company out there that would distribute They
sold finance products to car dealerships, and I also then
as a regional manager, was put in a position of
(13:21):
taking over on a temporary basis for someone else who
was in their automotive accessories division, and in the area
was one of the largest four dealers in the nation.
They had the largest buick dealer in the nation, and
they asked if I could temporarily fill that position. I did,
and realized that was a lot of fun and wanted
(13:42):
after a period of time to come back to this
area and was helping different dealerships open and establish accessory
departments in their dealerships, and had so many folks that
were coming to see us from out of the area.
I thought, I don't need to drive all over. I
just need to open indoors in Ashland and provide the
(14:03):
best quality automotive accessories and paint, sealants and rustproofing. So
that's what we did, and I convinced my business partner
to follow me into it. She did, and we've been
supporting each other ever since.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Rest is history. There you go, all right, tremendous. Now
before I let you go, Terry Wood again who is
joining us. We mentioned owner Classy Chassis, but also co
founder CEO talking this morning about hot Shots shooting Center
in Ashland. Don't know if you're married kids. Tell us
a little bit more about Terry and the family.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Well, my kids are all fur babies from the dogs.
I've got two dogs, an Aussie and a Golden are
very very wonderful. I've got cats and I've got two horses,
and that is My passion has been trail riding. I
have had the pleasure and a blessing of being able
to trail ride with the group out of the Wayne County,
(14:56):
Ohio Horsemen's Council and they introduced me to itbsolutely loved it. Unfortunately,
I've not had the time to be writing this last year.
We're getting so many people introduced and trained with the
shooting aspect of life that we haven't had much time.
So the horses have enjoyed their time off in the pasture.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
All right, So for you that that's probably a lot
of the spare time then, right in terms of horses.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Like that, Yes, that's that's a love awesome.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Well, great to learn your story. As we circle back,
one final question, Terry would hot Shots Shooting Center. I
guess it's not a question co founder CEO, if you
would just give you a moment here just to encourage
people to come see you guys in Ashland.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
We're set up aaron ready to go. We like I say,
whether somebody is a novice, even considering we have certified
trainers that work with our public. They're eager to help
folks and whether it's getting them into the industry, we
have our certified trainers even will go so far as
to accompanying someone to a gun shop and helping them
(15:57):
pick out and purchase a weapon that's dire for them.
So many times we hear, well, my ladies will say
my husband who has tried to help me learn this,
but that's not just a one off eron that is
just the way it is. We always find that folks
learn better when they're not being taught by a spouse,
(16:18):
and it eliminates that stress in the relationship as well.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Terry, before I let you go, I wanted to bring
this up. You actually mentioned this to me earlier local
law enforcement if they were thinking about coming to see
you guys, it would be a great time to get
something set up. Right.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Well, it's exactly the right time, eron, because this is
when a lot of departments and offices are getting their
budgets put in for the twenty twenty five year and
if anyone in the different law enforcement offices around large offices,
small villages, et cetera, they want to reach out to
us and we'll have them in, give them a tour
(16:54):
and talk to them about we can set up no
matter what the budget, we can set up training may
get available for them and their their staff so that
people can be well trained and safe.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
So you can go online you want to book an
