(00:00):
Hey is this Greg? It isGreg Jacobe was Papa Rope. Look who
(00:04):
it is? Oh my god?Yeah, my man was good. Hey
it's Jacobe Shattucks from the multi platinumGrammy nominated iHeart Award winning band Papa Roach.
Dang I like that intro, Man, what's up? Hey, congratulations
on picking up that iHeart road forRock Artists of the Year. Yeah.
(00:27):
Man, that was like so awesome, what a cool moment. You know,
we just wrapped up a tour inthe UK and had a great one
over there, and then came backto Hollywood, got fitted up in some
suits hoping we're gonna go pick upsome hardware, and uh, we're walking
down the Bred carpet and they awardedus right there, and I was just
like dumbfounded. To be honest,I was like, Oh, this is
(00:51):
amazing. It's nice, isn't itto be recognized like that? Absolutely?
Man. I mean we've been doingthis a long time, and you know,
this deep into our career. Tostill be making an impact of radio
and making an impact on people throughour music, it's it's a blessing,
man, And to be recognized inthat regard, it's like, damn,
(01:12):
Like that's what suff right there. That's like, it's those are the moments
I was dreaming about when I wassixteen years old, you know, and
now I'm living it, and thatis like, shouldn't ask for anything more.
Lots of gratitude towards that, youknow, you know, I mean,
you formed Papa Roach. What backin nineteen ninety three, You've been
making records with Papa Roach since then. You got a big record deal in
(01:37):
ninety nine, two thousand, yourfirst major label release came out, and
I mean, that's you've been doingthis for twenty five plus years with Papa
Roach. That's that's classic rock toKobe. So I'm a classic guy,
you know. I mean and honestly, dude, like that was the mission
since the beginning, we were likethe kids that were we had that grand
(01:59):
delusion that we were going to berock stars and travel the world and you
know, sell millions of records andeverybody kind of was laughing at us,
and uh, but I think thatthose delusions of grantur has definitely paid off,
you know what I mean. Well, you know, you've always been
a dreamer that's been able to obtainyour dreams. You know, that's hard
(02:20):
to do for a lot of people. Yeah, I mean we've had honestly,
I mean, I'll be real withyou, We've had moments where I'm
just like, am I Am?I done with this? Is it over?
And then I'll get back into thestudio and we'll start writing music again,
and then it's like, oh,hell no, I got more to
say. Then I'm like, youknow, we'll step out on stage and
then it's like you connect with thataudience and then you see him singing your
(02:44):
songs back. Oh that's amazing. How cool is that where you can stop
in the crowd, can sing yoursong. It's that's a blessing right there.
Brother. You know. You know, let's talk about how long you've
been doing this. How What isthe secret to Papa Road staying relevant?
(03:04):
I mean it sounds like every recordis different, but yet the same.
I mean, you've got a signaturesound. It's kind of changed over the
years. You're not as as hiphop or rapid as you used to be,
but but there's still there's that guitartone I think has a lot to
do with it. But um,well, what's the secret to Papa Road
staying relevant? You keep writing hits, you keep doing current tours with current
(03:24):
bands. You're not like a classicrock artist though you've been around for so
it's like we've been able to likewalk both sides of the line. You
know. It's like we're we're alegacy rock act, but we've maintained relevance
and that's like it's a lot,it's honestly, man, it's like a
lot of hard work really and trulyand uh, you know, for the
(03:46):
sound and the style. It's likewe're I'm always looking for what's new and
inspiring to me in music, andand I'm one of those guys that I'm
always digging in and trying to findwho's that new artist that's inspiring me and
how And it's whenever we do thatand we find this new art or these
new sounds that inspire us, somehowthey find a way into filtering into our
(04:08):
music. And that's I think what'sI guess one of our strength is the
evolution of the band, you know, and not evolving too far to where
it's like our fans are like,oh, what are they doing now?
It's like we always push the envelopewith what we're doing just enough and we
feel, you know, it's ourresponsibility as artists to take our fans on
a journey, and that's what we'redoing. You know, the band tours
(04:31):
a lot. You always have, and you've had substance abuse issues in the
past. What do you do withyour downtime these days? How do you
stay occupied so you don't don't thinkabout those things. I know you had
a bit of a weed relapse duringCOVID, but that's nothing like alcohol,
and I don't want to. Yeah, man, it's been like eleven years
since I drank now, you know. And so it's ultimate freedom to be
(04:51):
completely honest. And it was hardin the beginning, you know, to
go out and tour and watch everybodyparty in and carrying on and stuff.
But it's like I just came toa point where I was done, you
know. And I knew it inmy heart at hearts and my soul down
deep down into my guts. I'mlike, it's just not for me.
And I've seen my life um flourishedto be honest and my relationships mend and
(05:15):
and become a trustworthy, you know, husband, and to become a good
friend to my people. And whenI say I'm gonna do something, I
follow through. With it. Youknow, it's like all those little things
that get you know, lost inthe shuffle of partying and being a quote
rock star. Right, It's likeI was really just spiraling and you know,
like I said, freedom, man, that's what I want, dude,
(05:36):
and I have it now and Iwant to keep it. I'll do
anything I can. And so newhabits, new routines. Uh what do
you do? Sitess, you workout, you play golf, what do
you do? You know working outis a big part of it. Um.
Also we are running our record ourrecord label, so I throw myself
(06:00):
into that on the daily. That'sa big part of you know, just
I think me just not keeping ayou know, being I guess bored.
I try not to get bored. And I'll always be engaged in something.
So whether it's you know, goingto see my kids play their sports that
they're doing, or I'm into fitness, or I'm working for the label,
or you know, getting tattooed. There is no there is no downtime.
(06:26):
Yeah, ain't no downtime for meand my brother. I don't want it
right because bad things happen. Youknow. It's like an idle mind,
an idle hands, dude, that'sthe devil play. I got no time
for that. I mean, you'vebeen with your wife for twenty five plus
years. I mean, what atrooper. Yeah, man, we uh
we got married back in ninety seven, you know, so we just celebrated
(06:49):
twenty five years of marriage and uh, you know she's my Sharon. You
know, I'll be the Aussie Joe. Let's talk about that. At Osfest
tour, I wanted to ask youabout some of the some of the pop
er Roach tours in the past. Was what was it like being on Osfest
your first time? Oh? Man, it was wild, dude. I
(07:12):
was just in buck full buck nuttymode, right, party and raging,
and what a great tour for us, you know, sharing the stage with
Ozzy Marilyn manson Lincoln Park. Whatit was just a smasher and every day
just packed houses going crazy. Iremember this one time though, on os
(07:32):
Fest, I started a riot ata show in Jersey and I got arrested
and I had to pay a massivefine. I got a band on the
venue for a while, and Igotta tell you, man, when I
got when I came back to thevenue, they're like, Sharon wants to
speak with you. I'm like,oh, we're getting kicked off the tour,
this is over. And I gotto tell you, man, she
read me the Riot Act. Shewas up in my face screaming at me.
(07:55):
But in the end of it,like she's like, I'm just trying
to, you know, give youa reality check, because you got you
got the world in the palm ofyour hand right now, and like you
could just screw all this up.And it's only because she cared, really
and truly and I learned. Ilearned a big lesson that day, you
know. And but yeah, man, she was a bit brutal on me,
but you know, that's what ittakes with us. Rock and rollers
(08:18):
sometimes sometimes got to shake us backto reality. What was it like opening
up for Guns and Roses during thatChinese democracy era? Oh dude, that
was so sick. I remember doinga show in Puerto Rico and I started
singing a little bit of Spanish atthat show and the crowd went freaking,
like just absolutely berserk. And Iremember wrapping it up after we had done
(08:41):
a Madison Square garden with Guns andRoses, and I think it was like
one more show after it, andAxel told us He's like, listen,
man, there's had a lot ofbands that could come out here and rock
my crowd. Like a lot ofthe times our crowds are booing the opening
band, and you guys somehow justcame in and rocked a piss out of
our crowd. Like, udos toyou guys, you know, And that
was like for me, Wow,what a what an honor? You know
(09:03):
what I mean? Absolutely, youknow. And I'll tell you, as
a rock and roll veteran myself, you've never disappointed, even even when you
were hammered, I'll give you that. Man, never disappointed. Baby.
Hey, you know you came upwith a bunch of cool bands. What
(09:24):
band did you come up with thatdidn't make it that you thought would?
Oh? Man, I remember therewas a band back in the day and
we were recording our album Infest andthey were in the in the in the
other studio there and they were calledUnion Underground. Oh yeah, I got
a story about those dudes. ButI thought those dudes were just gonna blow
(09:46):
up, man, and it justit just never really popped off. And
uh, it's crazy because after afew years I hadn't seen the guys and
then I'm out on tour were Disturbedand I meet the bass bar, I'm
like, dude, you used tobe in it Union Underground and so John
Moyer, the bass player for Disturbed, started with those guys. But I
always thought those guys would have beenhuge, but it just never never.
(10:07):
And another one was called Blindside.I always love that band, but they
never blew up. I thought Patrickfrom the Union Underground was a pretty um,
you know, interesting guitar player. He had a lot of cool ideas.
Yeah, he's a great guitar player. Yeah, he's the dude ripped
straight up. I mean I keepup with him every once in a while
on the social media too. Man. So you're headed off to Australia this
(10:28):
month, yes, sir, aboutto go RiPP it. We we had
out on April fifteenth down there andwe're taking our friends and they used out
and the shows are gonna there's theseshows are gonna be sold out, so
it's gonna be great. And thenyou're playing Frontier Days in Cheyenne this year
on the twenty sixth of July. That's gonna be awesome. I saw a
(10:50):
kiss there once. Oh really yeah, Kid Rocks played it. Uh,
you guys are gonna tear it upthe front ring. Yeah, we're gonna
we love you, We're gonna ripit. That'll be. That's like two
days before my birthday too, soit'll be a little pre party for my
birthday. Nice. Hey, Man, thanks for taking time out. I
know that what You're just days awayfrom leaving to Australia, aren't you.
(11:13):
Oh yeah, Man about about toget packing here shortly and go rip it
down under. I'm just stoked becauseit's summertime down there, so I'm gonna

wind and cold. Hey, thanksfor calling me, man. I really
