It's a very very special episode ofFor the Record with Angelina Today in
(02:36):
the Bay Takeover with Ian Kelly waspopping it. I'm excited. I was
like saying, we keep rescheduling.I finally got you in here, so
full of it out out everywhere withyou Beannga. Yes, how you feeling
out that it's out? Man?I feel great. The reception from it
has been amazing. After a listeningparty and like seventy plus people showed up
(02:57):
and it was just it was niceto see the way the community it kind
of embraced it. I'm like, okay, we're making some moves. Yeah,
it's hard. So I noticed onthe first record you got a little
bre from Soul Food the part.So was that kind of the concept for
you right away going into it?I was gonna be like, kind of
based on the movie a little bit. Not right away. Ba. At
one point when I started listening toall the songs, and I stopped and
I was like, oh, youknow what, And the first one I
(03:20):
heard was the cousin Faith one,the cousin Faith, Yeah, you messed
my husband. And that was thefirst one. I'm like, ooh,
I'm gonna use multiple Okay, what'sso funny? So when I when I
press start, I heard yeah thefirst one. I was like, okay,
there's a solt food theme. Andlike I kept listening, I was
like, if they don't have thefamily, fuck my husband, I'm gonna
throw this. Also windowns like yougot it include out, I gotta be
like a relationship joint and then hegets a distance and then right Around'm like,
(03:44):
okay, they put it in there. Good. I was like,
you can't miss that. No,I thought that was hard with the concept,
So exactly what was it for you? Like when you guys were creating
it? Because you got you bangon it. Yes, he produced the
whole thing, the whole thing.I love that because I don't remember when
when actually Bronzin first came out likethat Blue Chips era. Oh, Like
for me, I was like onaction tough because like he would have producers
(04:06):
just produced the whole thing, likeyou know, party's probably is going to
produce this whole thing, you knowwhoever it was. And at the time,
I feel like a lot of artists, not that these projects weren't dope,
but at the time it was reallypopular to have like twenty producers on
one song, like even like Iremember watching the doone came out like it
was like crazy to kind of seethat. So there was something refreshing about
that, And I still get excitedwhen I say that to this day,
(04:27):
Like I think Alchemist anounced he's gonnado Benny's whole shit. So when I
saw that, there's just something specialabout it, and I feel like it's
kind of rare for you. Didthat happen organically or were you like,
did you hit him up like Iwant you to do my whole shit?
Honestly, it just kind of happenedorganically. First. I was like,
bro, let's just start cooking andmake some more music. You know,
I was on an independent label situationthat had just kind of started leaving in
and I tapped in with him.I'm like, let's let's build. And
(04:48):
then the next thing, you know, it just started growing piece by piece.
I'm like, let's make it aproject. He was like, come
on, and then a time atthat point it was smooth. I love
it. I love it, andI feel like this project for both of
you guys came together really good.I mean, you know we're gonna get
into both of your guys' journeys. But for me on the outside, looking
like I when I knew about DrewBango. When I heard about him,
it was more like on Club Flyers, I knew he was a DJ,
(05:10):
and then and I'm sure he's beenproducer forever, but it wasn'tntil like recent
years where it was like, ohhe's a producer because he's been on he's
everywhere now, like he couldn't reallyignore his name. And then even for
you, like I think I sawyou first at a black woman made this
tour. I think that might havebeen the first one a minute ago,
and I just want to see her. I really wasn't driven about the opening
acts. And I remember seeing youand I was like, way, Brock
can rap because I find Casina sheknew you, like so we have mutual
(05:33):
friends. But I was like,oh, like he could actually wrap and
you had like good states where likeI was like, okay, bron control,
like he actually like is a realperformer, you know what I mean.
So and then but then after thatthe recent years, like you're everywhere
like freestyles everywhere, like blown up, So like for me, it was
like I saw both of you guysgrow and then like this project came,
you know what I mean, howdid you guys get a popping together?
(05:55):
So Drew, I've known Drew forlike over a decade. I remember before
Drew Bang, it was Drew Bank. He was Drew Beaso and he was
always a bass player and you know, just kind of building on the side.
So when I knew he had thatbag already, and I had seen
the shift into the DJ world andthe Drew you know and all that,
I'm like, Bro, I'm like, let's bring it back. But no,
Lie, I just want to seeyou get deep into your bag.
(06:16):
Because Drew is an amazing artist.Like, he can play multiple instruments,
he can produce, he can DJ. So I was like, bro,
I just want to showcase that andthen me showcase my elevation with his lyricism,
and then let's make something special that'stoff. So you guys go back
already. You guys are already goodfriends. How did you get started to
music? Man wrapping in my partner'sclosets and in basements age probably like eighteen,
(06:43):
I used to I started off singingthe first song I ever got on
I singer hook. Really, Ididn't even know that I can't sing,
but I harmonized the hook and sound. You know, a lot of people
he started off singing because they're like, Oka, I'm gonna get the girls.
You know, I didn't no autotune. Then now auto tune,
I'll singing that you like, Imight be able to get something off you.
So then I went from eighteen thenhonestly, when I got to college,
(07:04):
I started rapping in my dorm rooma lot, and then going to
ciphers out in the yard and differentthings of that type of nature. And
then as soon as I came backhome, I'm like, okay, let's
let's take the career on one.Has music always been around you like growing
up? Definitely? Even like whenI used to play like Pop Warner Football,
I would like recite Versus to kindof calm myself down. Really that's
crazy too. I would start singingJacket Edge if it's like first and ten,
(07:27):
I'm singing Tupac like, you know, different things to kind of like
keep my mental, like the Kenninghardball where you got to listen to that's
me. That's funny. Do youcome from like a musical background, like
you know, with your family oranything you know, not so much a
musical background, but I will sayI think even just kind of looking at
a little bit of entertainment, atleast when it stems from my dad.
My dad was in radio for asecond. Oh really, he actually got
(07:50):
a way for it, became likea mortgage broker and wanted to help out
community based stuff. But I sawhis old tapes and he played them for
me and everything. So it alwaysjust like the love music was always there
and every Sunday one o two pointnine just you know, oh the oldies
everything. So I'm just like musicwas always around me, but I wasn't
(08:11):
just around like musicians per se.What moment for you were? It was
it like, okay, I needto start taking this seriously. Hmm okay.
I was like nineteen. I waswrapping in my dorm room with my
pot and then we were all freestylingand I just kept on going. And
afterwards he pulled me to the sideand he was like, hey, bro,
you want to take this serious.I was like, no, we're
just having fun, he said.He said, nah. He was like,
(08:33):
it's not just fun for you.Take it serious, you know.
Sad to say that friend passed awayrest and soul, but yeah, he
was really want to spark your mindto be like, oh maybe I could
do something. How much do youthink you've grown from soulful up now to
your like beginning projects? Oh alot? Like like what does this album
like really tell you? This project, I think you can see my control.
(08:56):
I think you can see more ofmy expense and when it comes to
song making and songwriting ability, Ifeel like my earlier music, you know,
some of it was like boom bab, some of it I still didn't
have control of my voice or knowhow to you know, exactly captivate people.
Yeah, I think my newer musicI understand now what people like.
I understand now how I've kind oflike progressed and kind of like blossomed.
(09:18):
So now I'm just kind of cohesivelyputting it together. Yeah, that's that's
interesting. You said that because Iwas talking to Money too. Money JP
came through a couple weeks ago.But we're just saying how like the Bay,
for sure, it gets put ina boxes. People like think there's
a bass sound, but like ingeneral, rap does too. Yeah,
you know, like even you saylike, oh, he's doing the boom
bap and like It's true, thoseare all sounds. But at the end
of the day, it's like, can you rap exactly? Because like you
(09:39):
could switch it up if you wantedto. I could start singing tomorrow if
I really really exactly wanted to,you know, just heavy auto tune,
put a little justin Bieber effected rightright right, we could take it on.
But even just like with the rap, so it's like, Okay,
what is making me be a highfew artist or whatever? Just because like
it got eight a ways on thebeat, you know what I mean,
Like, you know, what doesthat all really mean? So, but
I guess you're saying you found yourvoice a little bit more in this project.
(10:01):
Definitely. I think the biggest thingwhere my mind shifted was you know
how some people say like conscious rappersand things like that. To be real,
everything is conscious. It's conscious towho you are. So you feel
me if I'm slanging dope and Igot peas in the trunk and that's what
I'm talking about, I'm speaking fromthat level of consciousness about that. So
me what I just kind of finallydid, I'm just like, man,
(10:22):
I'm gonna talk about whatever, right, make sure that this story's painted that
you feel it, and I thinkat that point that's where I kind of
like stepped outside the box for myself, right and exactly. That's another one,
like I hate when people say consciousrap, Like even like with somebody
like who's your favorite rapper, andit's like, okay, well, if
I say this person, I thinkI'll listen to conscious rapper, or if
I say this, I think I'lllisten to this, But it's like it's
all rap, Like that's okay, that's storytelling exactly. Maybe not everyone's a
(10:43):
storyteller, but you know that, don't mean like I'm just subjected to like
this kind of rap music exactly.Even with Diller people, a lot of
people think like Diyla was just likeconscious, Like nah, if you listen
to Deler cars close exactly in likea tone and a vibe that sounded like
it was conscious or like that's whatpeople we worked with, like Little Brother
(11:03):
all that exactly. So I definitelyfeel you, like it's rap, it's
music to put so many boxes onit, but it's hard to like find
your own Lena into when everyone's liketrying to throw some kind of tied on
you. So when did you goindependent? Man? Officially went independent about
a year ago. Okay, andwhat made you make that decision? Like,
how did that come about? Honestly, I saw myself going in a
(11:26):
different direction. I think sometimes whenit came to the labels a part of
and for me, it's just aboutbelieving the power you have. I think
a lot of artists don't understand theactual power they have. Yeah, And
the more that you work on thatand build that, it opens up and
you start seeing it's like, ohthere, there really aren't any rules.
You can make things work. Youjust have to learn what works best for
(11:46):
you. So as I started seeingwhat worked best for me, I was
like, you know what, II do appreciate this help here, but
now I want to try this andI've created my own team. I've been
blossoming ever since. So it feelsgood. Yeah. So it's no like
be U with John lenn All thatlike it's still y'all terms and there's still
people over there like I chop itup with here and there, Like once
(12:07):
again, I learned over there, and I'm never gonna have beef with a
situation where I learned from. It'dbe different if I was just treated like,
you know, Cinderella and nobody. No, they was scared of there
there was love. There is justat some point I think, you know,
just grew in two different ways.Yeah, it was just your time.
You're like, this is what Iwant to do next? Yeah,
okay, so is it this iskind of the first project? Then have
(12:28):
you been independent? Oh? It'scrazy? So you you guys kind of
had full obviously full control. Yep, what's gonna do? How is it
working though with someone like you?Got you and Drew? Like, is
there a lot of sometimes you guyslike don't agree with something like how do
you? How do you work throughthat? No? Lie, me and
Drew just work effortlessly. I don'tknow if it's like some zodiac shit like
(12:50):
signs or what. I don't know, but me and bro really just like
it's easy. And then as wellas if he feels something, then I'm
gonna listen, you know, he'slike, ah, your flow might not
sound cool like that. Try thishere. I'm gonna try it. Respect
each other's opinion, so it's likethe count on you to tell me if
I don't sound good here. Definitely, I think we've built that rapport to
the point where was like man,it's no hard feelings, like we want
(13:13):
the best outcome, the best music, the best product. That's what it's
about. Do you think it does? Does it take longer when working with
someone on a project, but it'slike this is ours together. No,
But I think it all depends onwho you're working with, you know.
You know, some people are harderto catch, you know, and I
respect everybody's schedule and timing, youknow. I think that's the that's the
biggest thing. But no, forfor our stuff, it's pretty easy.
(13:35):
And then you know, like Isaid, Drew Man, our families live
close around each other and everything. It's hard not to catch. Bro,
that's fire, Mike. I feellike now people are blessed to like have
good chemistry, right, you know, with the whole project like coming together
like that. Let's talk about thefeatures though, because I loved a Sunner
Man. I think bounces one ofmy favorites. Bounces up there, Yeah,
because you just do that, likeI don't know that rawness on there
(13:56):
like you made it, you know, I made it a little like okay,
like this might be a my gymplay less how did it these come
together? So no loud of theone with Stunnerman came about very organic.
I had slid on Drew. Wewere working on a session and he pulled
up and it was funny. Atfirst he started juggling with me. You
know, I don't got no haircutright now, but with my haircut,
he was just like, he waslike, you know, you look like
you like Makai Feiffer. The wholesession he see it. So the whole
(14:20):
session he's jogging with me about Makayand then you know, I get up
and I start rapping and then atthat point he was like, bro,
he was like, wait you callactually yeah, I never heard of you
like that. And then we justtapped in and then he heard the song
as we were making and he waslike can I get on this? Okay?
Yeah, And to be real,I don't even think. I don't
think Big Steppen had came out yetor had just came out, Like oh
(14:43):
wow, that started making that songso like perfect timing. He's such a
good dude, like even if you'renot even familiar, like if you meet
him, you just want him towin because he's such a good dude.
And then he has really good stagepresence. We uh, I had to
work like some NBA watch party withGoogle and like actually Kamaia was supposed to
perform during halftime, but her flightgot like canceled. We had to find
a lost minut artists and he endup coming through. There was a lot
(15:07):
of white techy people in there andhe had them turns like he just knew
how to talk to them. Hedid a freestyle. It was like it
was really strict because it was Googlepixel right, so like even in the
song he threw it up and hewas like, uh little rock no iPhones,
Like he was just like going offthe rib and like he just everyone
fell in love with him, sosimilar to you, Like you just notice
like everyone has got that star powerright away. So that was one of
(15:28):
my features. But what were someof your favorites? Well, No,
I definitely that went And another quickthing about stunning Man the first time and
not the first time, one ofthe times I saw him perform, he
actually like did a prayer at theend of his prayer of the Google one
too. The other artists I sawdo that and it kind of hit me
when I saw it was DMX.So seeing those two do that at the
end of sets is just kind oflike impactful. That must be his thing,
(15:48):
because yeah, he did that showout the Google band and it was
like cheering for the basketball game. He's like, hold on real quick,
yeah, keep it, gonna getthis prayer off. I love that.
But another one of my favorite featuresis Jane Handcock. You know, that's
one of myas, that's one ofmy dearest friends, and she's just amazing
and it's effortless to what I lovedabout that song. I had asked her
for a certain type of hook andshe gave me a different hook at first,
(16:11):
and I was like, you knowwhat a friend, I like this,
but I was looking for like somethingdifferent. She's like okay, spent
like fifteen more minutes on it andthey made that hook. And I appreciated
the professionalism, like it's cool, bro, Like what's the next? And
that made everything like smooth working withher. So she just want to iminated
for two five killing it. It'scrazy. I got, like all these
(16:34):
talented people, But when did youstart this project then? Man? So
no, lie, Like we startedthe project probably like a year and a
half, like two years ago,but like it didn't just initially start.
I was like, all right, man, we're running and we're making this
project. I was still in myown situation, so we kind of came
back and forth. It wasn't justall in one big sitting, but you
(16:55):
know, we spent time in thestudio for a minute. Since then,
Wow, it's kind of crazy thetime, Like I just talk about you
and Drew like that perfect timing, but like even the future is like look
at everyone doing everything. You know, it's like perfect timing. And then
another one of my favorite features,Isaiah mo Staffa to be real, that's
like one of my people who Iknow, like, you're gonna hear that
name a lot. I think prettysoon here give it, you know,
(17:17):
one to two years. I feellike you hear that name a lot.
He does it all. He canproduce, he can sing, he can
rap, like his creative visions theway he does stuff. So every song
I made with him, I madewith him right on spot. So the
first song we did was all thisgame. So when we did that together,
we spend time on it, andthen the session was almost over.
We had like twenty minutes left andhe was like, oh, I got
(17:38):
something for the other b too.I'm like, all right, lay it
down real quick, and he laidthe hook and I looked at him like
he was an alien. I waslike, we just did this in five
minutes, like what And yeah?So no, lie, like all the
features on this project blessed and butI'm really blessed about it that they're really
friends, real friends, right Yeah, Like I could say these are good
people, yeah, and they allmy shit. Yeah, I can help
(18:00):
come pick up and get a plate. You know, it's Christmas dinner.
I can say that to these people, and that's a good feeling. That's
dope. I was gonna say thatabout that was All this Game. One
of the first music videos for it. No, All this Game I think
was the last music video. Ohokay, that music video was fire,
thank you? So how did youWhat was the concept for you in like
creating a bunch of music videos forit, Like did you know already a
(18:22):
plan that you had like rolling out, rolling out the album or how did
that come about? So honestly,I didn't have a complete plan. I
did have some ideas visually where I'mlike, you know what, this song
feels like a barbecue, so let'stry to give that vibe. I'm like,
this song makes me feel like thatintro to Dangerous Minds were like the
spotlight y, like, let's dothat, you know, That's that's what
I did, And I started kindof putting it together just to kind of
(18:45):
get the imagery going, and Ithink it just kind of wind up being
like, oh, this messes well. So I think that was the cool
part about it. It's dope andit's not just like you know, obviously
the movie aspect is really dope, but you really, I really the whole
thing is a vibe like I don'tknow, you obviously like cared about the
transitions, you know, what wasthe process of going into that? No?
(19:06):
Lie. So one thing I've learnedjust kind of just doing multiple projects
is that you have to think likea DJ when it comes to transitions for
your projects. You gotta know thetempos. You gotta know the highs and
the lows. And that was thebiggest thing. Like I had a DJ
friend Timmy about it was a actuallyshe goes by the name Stony Creations and
one time she did a set andshe was doing stuff and she was rocking.
I'm like, how you do itso effortlessly? And she was like,
(19:26):
I look at time and then whenI when I started peeping that.
That's how I started doing like mysoundtracks, when I started putting songs together,
or even if I have projects youhaven't heard, I'll listen to him
like a DJ now, And thatis such a DJ thing sounds with the
homely viol He's really big on thattoo, like he's like, if I
got it up here, I gotto take him down to bring him back
up. But also I think it'sjust so important in an album, Like
I mean, I guess in thestreaming era, it's maybe we're going away
(19:49):
from that because like unfortunately there's allthe people that listen to albums all the
way through. But I was talkingabout this and money too, like the
transitions can mess up your shit frombeing a classic and not like it could
be mad HiT's on it. Ialways say this, like Volume ja Z
is like one of my favorites, but like it's together as an album,
like you look at it later,it's like, oh there's who hits on
that. Hell of my favorite songsare on here, but it didn't really
mesh well together the way it was, you know what I mean exactly,
(20:10):
and no lie, And I thinkthat sometimes that's the difference from like an
album sound like an album, anda project sounded like a compilation, right,
like a mixtape. You know.I feel like albums feel like,
oh I'm at my popcorn. Itfeels like I'm listening to a movie.
You know. So off the reviewwere like really adamant about that, Like,
Okay, this gotta flow a certainway. Definitely. Sound soundscaping is
art, you know, like likethat little click sound, that little bird
(20:33):
you hear in the background. Itall adds that little bit of feeling to
a song. Is there any isthere? Was there like a lot of
songs that didn't make the cut. There were some and me and Drew actually
are working on some other stuff too. Okay, cool little deluxe, so
you know, we want to makesure everybody gets the full dose. But
yeah, like we got it brewingup. Would you guys do like another
like complete different project too, Likecould we get maybe like a trilogy or
(20:56):
something else all of it? Likeis this just like one extension? You
know what? I got to sitdown with Drew. We haven't really exactly
talked about like a soul full ofhis series. You know, I'm not
mad at it, especially with thereaction this has gotten, right, it's
kind of like okay, like yeah, we had to sit on the draw
on board with that one. SUPERBall right, So what's next for you?
Because I feel like now the album'sout, yo poping, what's going
(21:18):
on? It was next for me, honestly, just to give people more
music. I think this year, more singles. This upcoming year, more
singles. A few projects already inthe tank. I actually have a project
with DJ d Sharp that I havein the tank that I'm working on.
Me and the Homi name Tico, who's actually from out here. We've been
working on stuff. So there arestill a few producers who I have like
(21:40):
projects with, but I think someof those might be smaller. I definitely
want to give more singles out.I think the biggest thing with me is
that I do feel like I'm agreat artist, and I feel like I'm
growing into what I've been meaning togrow into. Now. It's consistency and
yeah, people got to see andfeel you. And honestly, nowadays,
even when you drop music, it'sall I algorithm. You feel me the
same way you drive on Instagram andthe more you drive on Instagram, yeah,
(22:04):
same way with music. See,I have such a like I don't
know, I feel different ways aboutthat. I agree, and that is
how it is, unfortunately, butlike I also feel like sometimes people will
drop stuff and then they kind ofstop promoting after a while because they think,
like not enough times past. It'slike this is your baby, like
you know, just because like itain't popping the first month, like and
it's still new, like I writand I used to be a little shit
(22:25):
kid that used to say stuff likethis too, like you know, a
new song called to be like ohyou late that came out last week,
because that'd be the popular thing todo, is like download the music right
away. But now that I'm older, it's like this is their latest project.
I am not late, Like nothingcame out after this just because it
I wasn't in the studio right whenit drops, you know what I mean
exactly. But you know something Istarted to realize too, So even with
me wanting to drop more music,I also want to make more pieces of
(22:48):
art around the music too, Soyou know, I don't want anything just
to be like, oh, Idrop a single here this week next week,
and then we just forgot about thatone. Yeah, I'll probably still
promote this, okay, that's all. Makes sure like we still gotta keep
pushing the make it a continuous Likeyou said, nothing is all. I
had somebody tweet me I had apot and that text me like like two
weeks ago, like, bro,you and Drew dropped this project. It's
(23:10):
gonna be crazy. I'm living whatI'm saying, and I'm just like yep,
yeah, and knowing that it wasalready out, so yeah, and
I'm like, you know, like, hey, you can't take offence to
it. You know, people justin the world where there's so much stuff
coming at us all the tame.If it ain't viral, more than likely
people didn't see it. So keeppromoting it, keep pushing it. Yeah,
it does talk with the singles.I mean, me and my friends
(23:30):
talk about this whole time. It'slike streaming did kind of kill everything because
a lot of times like whatever, these albums will go never one is.
But it's like you didn't even listento the album. It's popping, or
this artist is popping because that onesong with viral, or everyone's streaming that
one song, but the whole time, the whole album's whack. But now
this person is the bar because theygot these two popping songs and then ma'am,
now you got ten million streams offof really Yeah. I really want
(23:55):
streamings to blow up because it's likeyou and I like people need to go
in and buy the albums, likeyou don't have to do that anymore.
And it's making like people who aresorry it's trash, you know, be
great or vice versas. It's it'sjust hard to get music. It can
they made it easier, but itsomehow became harder at the same time,
you know what I mean, right, And it can feel a little watered
down and oversaturated at times. Itrust me, I know the feeling.
(24:15):
But I think that's why you still, even if to another artist, if
you want to drop consistently, stilltake care of your music, you know,
don't just don't just drop blah blahjust to just to be doing it.
You know. I still say likeget ready, stay ready soon.
Ain't got to get ready me.I like to do like the three months
plan, where it's like I alwaysstay three months ahead of what I'm about
to do, so then that way, when something pops up, I'm already
(24:37):
settled in and I don't feel likethe mister krab me and you feel me
like, yeah, focused, yeah, will we get any like vinyl or
anything for this one? This iswhat I like, I need to play
like in my living room, youknow, like walking in and I got
like a record player, like, and I know we all got bluetooth.
I do. I guess still connectedto that, like I can still bump
it in my car. But no, no, lie, yes, I
(24:59):
still actually we want to get vinyl, still planning to get some merch going.
We want to do some shows.Like I said, nothing nothing is
nothing is dead until I'm dead.So you feel me like I just want
to keep on pushing and keep everythingrotating. I'm excited for you. It
go streaming out out everywhere. Hesaid, you are working on shows.
It's just it's not. Oh yeah, no, we still got more shows
(25:21):
coming. We got merch on theway, and me Andrew have a deluxe
project we got on the way.So we've been cooking some more stuff.
So no, we got a lotcoming. Okay, let people know where
they can follow you. You canfollow me at first name Ian pretty much
on all social media. You canfind me as Ian Kelly on YouTube and
no life were really friends. Youcan pull up on me and bring a
play. Hey, thanks so muchfor being here. Thank you. Just
(26:03):
all the wacke it, just agowacked question, just all wack it,
