(00:00):
This is the OSA Today podcast Iam chat doing it is always joined by
the executive director of the OSA.It's Peter Weber who joins me and Peter,
I know you're on the road rightnow. It's a big time of
the year in the state of Oregonbecause Spring Championships are going to kick off
and that begins with speech tomorrow.Yeah, that's where I'm headed right now,
down to Western Oregon University and monumentsfor getting ready to speech. C
(00:24):
Championships start on Friday and go throughSaturday, so that would be the first
kind of Spring Championships. So wehave this is our activity season, so
we roll in you know, speechand debate this weekend. Our solo music
is also this weekend out at MountainsideHigh School on Saturday. Get you know,
(00:45):
just over three hundred students participating ina number of different events there,
which is great. And then thenwe continue the music theme with our choir
and band Orchestra State Championships. Choiris next weekend of Oregon State and then
band Orchestra is a second week ofMay also down at Organ State. So
it's it's a great time of year. Get a lot of kids involved,
(01:08):
you know, we have thousands ofstudents that are participating in these choir,
band, orchestra you know, witha speech and solo music. So it's
a it's a great opportunity that's awesome. Now different than other sports that we're
accustomed to, like football, baseball, basketball or softball. But what's it
like to be there and check outspeech or solo music or the fire band
orchestra. You know, they're they'rejust such great events that you know,
(01:33):
we talk as a staff a lotabout giving kids the opportunity to participate in
the things that they love to do. Um. You know, I have
a son that participates and inquire, but just getting a chance to see them
do what they like to do anddo it so well. I mean,
these speech and debate kids will bewith this weekend just outstanding students. They
(01:55):
do a really good job, smartas a whip, and it's just fun
to see them excel, you know, in something that they love. Obviously,
see the music with the solo youknow, more geared obviously towards the
individual with the solo music in thedifferent events. And then the choir,
band orchestra. I mean, we'llhave choirs in bands and orchestras that will
(02:19):
be you know, offers of ahundred kids on stage performing you know,
those courses in a lot of casesalong with the speech and debate, those
are co curriculus, so they're they'retaking that class during the day at school.
There's a real educational component to it. But it's just wonderful to see
them compete, have a chance toshow off their skills and everything that they've
(02:42):
done to get to the point thatthey're at. That is terrific. Now
right around the corner with those springchampionships, a lot of things on tap.
Give us a little preview with thegolf, the tennis, track,
baseball and softball. Yeah, youknow, it's it's nice. As I've
said, they're driving. The weatherpretty good, you know, mid seventies.
Certainly hasn't been that way the lastlast month and a half or so,
(03:05):
but we're hoping that this this goodweather continues. You mentioned you will
kick off our sports championships in thespring with golf, you know, just
seven different tournaments between the boys andthe girls. We're all around the state
for that. We use Quail Valleyout in Banks. We're at Tristan Tree
(03:27):
in Corvallis. Emerald Valley and Cresswell, and then we're actually using for the
first time this year, we're gonnause Tokyote out in the Mackenzie Blue River
area to super excited to get themon board. Great opportunity, you know,
for hundreds of high school golfers toget out there and they show what
they can do on the course.Later that week in mid May, we
(03:47):
have our tennis State Championships. Againwe use three facilities for that. Six
A is out at Twalton Hills, they're in Beaverton, they're Tennis Enter.
We're moving our five A to WestHills Racking Test Club in Beaverton as well,
(04:08):
so they're they're on that Friday, and then they wrap up with the
six A and five eight together onthat Saturday in May. And then we
also use Oregon State for our foureight through one. Again boys and girls,
get a lot of students involved,so it ends up being a pretty
big week between the golf and thetennis. But again we used to hope
for some dry weather and a chancefor allowing kids to show what they can
(04:30):
do. After that, we rollright into our track and field. So
fortunate in our state to have thatpartnership at University of Oregon. We're going
to be down at Hayward Field, you know, the preeminent facility of the
country some believe maybe in the world, and having a chance over three days
leading into Memorial Day weekend to haveabout, you know, twenty six hundred
(04:55):
kids participate from all around the stateat a venue like Hayward Field, it's
just it's just outstanding. So we'resuper excited about that. That'll finish up
the month of May for us withchampionships and then our baseball softball finals softballs
on June second and third at JamesSanders Stadium at UOVO, and baseball is
(05:15):
a little bit different this year.We changed and we used to be two
games on Friday and three on Saturday, which is what we did for but
our small school baseball coaches came tous and said, hey, we really
want to move that to Saturday.Shorting them one day with the pitch accounts
and things like that makes it difficultfor them in the final. So we're
(05:35):
gonna have two sites on Saturday,June third for baseball. We have a
tentative agreements with k Park and uo H, you know, provided they're
not hosting a regional for the NCAAVolcano Stadium and then University of Portland as
well. We'll kind of see whichteams advance and where we can put those
(05:56):
games and just look forward to agreat wrap up to the spring Sea That
sounds great. It's the OSA Todaypodcast chat doing along with Peter Webber.
It's hard to believe that we've almostwent through an entire season. But you've
got the final board meeting coming upon May eighth. What's on tap for
the board meeting? Yeah, youknow, the final board meeting of the
year. We have a few thingsto work through. One of them is
(06:17):
a number of openings on our executiveboard. You know, the last time
we talked, we had three membersthat were elected at our last Delgan Assembly
meeting. We have some appointments tomake for a few spots our representatives from,
for example, the School Boards Association, the Coaches Association, the Assletic
(06:41):
Directors Association. All of those spotsand representatives are open at this meeting.
We also have a four A threeA representative as well, So our board
takes in applications for those from aroundthe state. They review them. They're
trying to look at the makeup ofour board in terms of do we have
the balance that we're looking for withgender, geography, ethnicity, trying to
(07:04):
make sure we're representing the state well. So they'll they'll review that. That's
probably the biggest thing on the agendafor the May meeting. There's always a
few requests to come in from schools. We'll be looking at our calendar for
next year. Both our meeting calendariscalendar as well, trying to fine line
(07:25):
that as well. So again agood way to wrap up the year,
get the board together on May eightand look forward to again finishing the year
strong. Well. That sounds great. For more information, you can always
go to the website OSA dot organd information there as well. If you
want to become an official and you'llget the training you need to help get
(07:45):

enjoy the start of spring championships andunit will catch up soon. That sounds
great, appreciate it. Thanks tochat
