Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, Hi there, Detroit Wheels.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Hey, Doug. Yes, Dave Sel from Shamrock Jazz Orchestra.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Dave, how are you, my friend?
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'm good, I'm good. How are you doing? My old friend?
We met decades ago. You don't remember me, I know that,
but I was born and raised there and we know
all the same guys, the Pastoria Brothers, the Romeo Brothers,
guys from Adrenaline, Bittersweet Alley, Gary Spaniel.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Well that was that was the rock of the eighties
right there.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
That was great. It was great. Hey, I have Danny
Serafin on hold.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Oh okay, yeah, yeah, let's pop them on sure.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
All right, Doug, Yes, all right, Doug meet Danny Surffin.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Hey, hey, Doug, how are you.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
I'm good and it's great to meet you.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
And congratulations on coming in on this incredible event. Danny
Sarafin from the band Chicago.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Also look forward to meeting you in person. Yeah, looking
forward to the event and playing with with with the
Shamrock Orchestra. I mean, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
I love playing with those big bands.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
That was one of the things I was going to
ask is how this uh and how this, you know,
all came together, but we got to give a little
history first. First off, on Shamrock the Jazz Orchestra, Danny,
when you see these guys actually live your your mind
is going to be blowing because if you like that
big band sound, I mean, they really do have it.
(01:27):
But what I love is the twist you know when
they do the medley of the Beatles and the medley
of led Zeppelin and and and Dave. The way you
take those songs and shamrock a phi them, I guess
is what you could say.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, it really is special.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
And Uh, Danny, I'm just wondering because I know these
guys from Detroit. So how did you happen to find
out about uh Shamrock Jazz Orchestra.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Well, mine by the name of Diane Wu's she works
for Adobe Laboratory. She's she's kind of like the main
proponent of dolbe atmos in cars. She's been that's her
goal in life and her husband for the last years
and she's worked with Dave and.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Their keys player passed on a link or two and
I think that's what made its way to Danny.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Wow, that's incredible.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Well we should mention uh For those that don't know,
Danny Sarafin is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer,
Grammy Award winner, and most importantly, the original and co
founding drummer of the band Chicago and Danny. I mean,
I'm sure you know for a fact that the Motor
(02:44):
City loves that band and and loved it from the beginning,
and you know all through the years.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
You know, it's it's mutual. I love Motor City our
whole day. That I haven't played, I haven't played there.
I've done a couple of clinics since I left Chicago,
but I don't believe I've played like a live performance
since I was with the band, you know. So, and
I want to get there with my band. But well
that's another story for another day. But this is you know,
(03:14):
I'm so looking forward to playing with the shermrock Overstow
in Detroit, you know, in Detroit, because I love I
mean to me, you know I First of all, they're
both Chicago and Detroit are two great, two soulful, great
cities that are you know. So, I you know, like
I Forstance, I'm a Bear fan, so I want the
(03:38):
Bears to win. But if the Bears. I win, I'm
going for the Lions.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
You know, we don't want to talk about the Bears.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Come on now, listen.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Listen you guys just our best coach.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, oh that's right, Yeah yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Ben Johnson is the head coach of the Bears.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Now, So I would not bring that up at the
ads at all.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
I will not, I will not. Don't worry. I'm I
may be dumb, but I'm not stupid.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
You know, I can see where the connection there between
you and Shamrock.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
I mean with the big band orchestra sound of this group. Now,
what did you do?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Just happen to see some YouTube videos and go I
love these guys.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
I want to play with them. I mean, how did
how did that work out?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Well, you know, Diane, Diane showed it to me. I said,
you know, Diane, that would be a oneerful, that would
be I'd love to sit in with this band. And
she mentioned that Todave and Dave said, yeah, why not,
that'd be great. It kind of happened spontaneously and wow,
this is the best way for things to happen anyways.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
You know, absolutely we should let everybody know that the
show is going to be March twenty ninth Saturday night
at Andiamo, so people can get their tickets in advance.
It's at the Andiamo Showroom. You will love that room, Danny.
It really is perfect for what you guys are about
to do. But my question is, you know, I know
(05:01):
enough musicians to know that it's rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal.
So how are you guys kind of preparing for this show?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Well, one rehearsal.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I love that actually too, Actually to.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Ones the night before, right, Dave.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, we have a rehearsal, full show rehearsal on Friday,
the twenty eighth, and that is another second set rehearsal, Doug,
Danny's playing the second set of our show. That's where
we play all the Chicago hits with him. We're rehearsing
them the day of the show early on.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Wow. Oh that's fantastic.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
So there's two sets, and you're gonna do an entire
second set of Chicago music.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
I can see where you're coming from, Danny.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
You're a you're a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer,
you're a Grammy Award winning drummer, and you played with Chicago.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
How many years. Did you actually play with Chicago?
Speaker 4 (05:57):
It was a lot, right, I mean twenty three Yeah,
a lot.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
It's an absolute lot. And uh, yeah, I still play.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I still play the music. So I know all this material.
My band. I have a band called California Transit Authority,
and we were marketed and very but we play Chicago
and we play it really incredibly well. But you know,
so I know all these tunes and I've been playing
them for many many you know, for for many years,
so it should be I'll slide in pretty easily and
(06:29):
and I'm looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, We're not worried about uh syncing up if you will.
We're more worried about getting so nervous that we slub
up a song with the nah.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Once once you guys, once we hang together, you won't
have that nervous Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Once you get up there, it all it all comes together.
But I know the crowd is going to absolutely love this.
The Shamrock Jazz Orchestra has been playing around now at
least uh They've been on my radar for the past
year year and a half or so and have played
some of the best clubs in town there Danny, so
(07:08):
Dave tell me a little bit about Shamrock and tell
me about the guys. And I know there's you know,
there's like forty eight guys in the band, so I
don't you know, but we should mention them all. We
should mention who's in the band and and you know
what their history is.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Well, it's a special group, you know, from from our perspective,
because it's an eighteen piece orchestra, sixteen musicians and two
world class singers. And I think you have heard Gabe Camastracci,
our lead singer. He's just phenomenally Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
He really has a presence on stage two he does.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah. Well, fourteen of us came from He's Detroit right
there at eight mile you know, nine Mile Roads. That's
where we all went to school, nine Mile and grass
at you see Turnheit school and various years. Of course,
you know, there's a range of ages in the group.
But we all benefited from an incredibly well funded and
(08:10):
well executed musical program that the district was fortunate or
was giving us. So we benefited greatly. We learned from
some of the best instructors you know. And the nostalgic
twist on this is that even one of the retired
band directors that taught us growing up when we were
(08:30):
children is still our band director. So there's a real
hometown nostalgic tug, you know, in this regard. But you know,
here we are decades later playing together again. It's just
been an incredible ride, in incredible rush.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
We played our first.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Show in July of twenty two at the Magic Bag
and we sold it out. We couldn't believe it. We
are marketing to our alumni for the most part. But
then we moved on to the Emerald Theater Clemens. We
played twice there. We sold bad art ticket. We got
something going here. So one thing has led to another.
We've gotten better and been sought out by some of
(09:10):
the nicer venues, ony Amos being one of them, and
Joevo Piri there at andy Amos has been terrific to
us and we're really excited about that. And Doug, I know,
of course, you know George Bayer from his radio days
there with you and as you guys cross pass over
the cross paths over the decades, but George's been involved
(09:34):
with us right from day one and at times acted
as our MC and he's a key he's a key
member of the group. Even though he doesn't play an instrument,
we love having him be part of our our group. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
No, he's a great connection.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
And I was just about to bring his name up
because this is how myself and and I know JJ
got involved as well a bunch of US radio guys.
He sent out your video to a bunch of us
and and for about a week, I you know, I
kinda I said, what could what is George sending me
all these videos of and uh I finally I finally
(10:13):
opened one up, and I was absolutely blown away. And
I called him right away. I apologize for, you know,
taking my time to get back to him. But yeah,
we used to work in the radio business, Danny, uh
for I don't know, close to thirty years together. He
was on the one of the biggest morning shows in Detroit.
I was his boss, and uh you know, over the years, uh,
(10:39):
you know, we've stayed in touch. Uh So I was
really pleasantly surprised when he sent me this. He knows
I have a real passion for local music, and I
know that Dave and I know so many, so many people,
so many mutual friends together.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
But yeah, it has turned out.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
You know.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
Now now we're watching in this band kind of climb
the uh the flagpole here. And when they added you
onto this under this bill, I said to George, I've
got to talk to to Danny about about this connection,
because you're probably not the first and certainly not the
last to uh to enjoy this band's music, no question
(11:19):
about it.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Well, I'm looking forward to I know it's going to
be a great experience and hopefully I bring a level
of authenticity to the Chicago music which which should be
fun for everybody and for me too. Yeah. Yeah, I
still love I still love playing the music. And when
I get to play it with musicians of this caliber
and with a large horn section, you know, it's just
(11:43):
it's just great. It's a great feeling.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Well, and Doug, we're excited about it. Obviously. It's it's
one thing to play a show or play a gig
with you know, uh high the highest level act or
band or group or singer even you know, it's one thing,
but you do your own things right, it's a whole
difference thing. When you've got a rock and Roll Hall
of Famer and a co founder of Chicago playing the
(12:09):
drums of you, we're all kind of pinching ourselves. Wow,
this is really going to happen, and we're really excited
about it. It's not only going to be a great
night of music, but we also are factoring in or
adding in that there's going to be moments or spots
or gaps in the show where Danny's going to tell
some stories that I know people will love to hear
(12:32):
that they wouldn't necessarily be able to hear them if
they weren't there at that show. History of songs, funny moments,
things that happened. You know, you only hear those things
when you go to the show, and so that's another
unique factor that I think is going to be well
received by the audience.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
Well, yeah, I love the fact that, you know, you
guys are not a tribute band, so to speak. So
it's not like Danny's coming in and playing with a
Chicago tribute band. Like I said early on, Shamrock Jazz
Orchestra makes this music their own, and when you're covering
led Zeppelin, the Beatles, or Chicago, it does come across,
(13:14):
you know, with with your personality, there's no question. So
I love that fit. But the city of Detroit just
loves Chicago. I've known that for years and years, and
I mean, Danny, all right, so I'm gonna put you
on the spot for a story, okay, because Chicago did
(13:35):
I think what was the first multi night stand at
Pineab It was back in the early seventies. That would
be even before I was on the radio. And I've
been around a long time, Danny, But tell us a
little bit about what that must have been like when
(13:56):
they booked you for five big nights in a row
at Pine Job and uh, what kind of memories do
you have of that?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Well, you know, we played Pine Kobb. It was a perennial.
It was a perennial event, and you know that particular time.
I think, to be honest with you, I think later
on we sold ten days, but that you know, I
believe there was a ten day run.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
I think maybe I'm I think you know, now that
I think about it, I think you might be right.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
Maybe been eight eight, But it's you know, it was.
It was unprecedented. You know, we got to know the press,
we got to know radio people. Obviously, the Nederlanders were
the for the promoters, their grand the venue, and we knew.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
You know, the crew.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
It was just and most of all, the audience was
just you know, ever since the first time we stepped
down the stage in Detroit, Joe Lewis areena, I think
we played played a gig, you know, before we even
went to pineob It was a love affair, you know.
So that's why I have very very deep feelings and
(15:06):
good feelings for Detroit, the city and the people. And
you know, it's yeah, and hopefully it's something that happens
more often.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Well, I think this is going to be a fun night.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
It's going to be a great uh, you know, collaboration
between the two of you, and uh, I guess before
we wrap it up. Uh, Danny, I see that you
did put a book out. I'm not sure when, but
I'm sure there's some great stories in that.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Yeah, it's been a long time.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
Oh it's been a while, so people, but it's still
out there. People could pick it up and find out
a little bit about you.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Oh, they'll find out more than a little bit. We'll
find out more than a little bit. The name of
the book is Chicago Street Player. It's called street Player
in my Chicago story.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
Yeah, I don't think Dave and I are putting any
books out you know, anytime too soon, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
But yeah, I would agree.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
I agree, but that's fantastic.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Well, once again, it's one night only, Saturday, March twenty ninth.
It's a the legendary Andiamo show Room. You can get
tickets in advance for that, and uh it's the very
special night with Shamrock Jazz Orchestra and Danny Sarafin, original
drummer and co founder of Chicago. It has been a
(16:24):
pleasure talking to you guys, and uh, we're all looking
forward to seeing this show.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
I'll tell you that thanks to looking for I can't
wait to meet you, bro, can't wait to meet you.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
All right, and Dave tell the guys to be ready
to rock and have a great show out there with
Danny and congratulations.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yeah, thank you very much. We're ready to go and
hope to see you there as well.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
All right, Well, thank you guys so much, and thanks
for rocking the Motor City.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
You guys all wait to get there.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Thank you, goodbye, bye, bye bye.
