Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, Hi, there the Detroits wheels.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Mark Cassack on Mark, Mark.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Buddy, how are you my man?

Speaker 2 (00:05):
All right, I'm good. I got bull kinda on the
line with us too.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
All right.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Hey, Boo, hello, I know your mother gave you that
name and you're sticking to it, so.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
We'll keep it there.

Speaker 4 (00:16):
That's right, all right.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Well, joining us on the line, I've got Mark Kosa
from Slight Return and Boo who is the curator for
the Buddy Miles estate. And uh, well you guys are
coming back for more.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Huh Boo.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Now, I remember last year when we did this show
for the Love of Buddy Miles. You told me this
was the first one and you'd see how it went.
So it looks like we got a second one coming
up here on March the first, and apparently everything went
well for you.

Speaker 5 (00:48):
Oh yeah, we had a I mean, it was just
such a great time last year, and uh it was.
It was so cool seeing how all these great musicians
came from around the country and just kind of gelled
on stage. That was a lot of fun to watch,
and you know, some iconic moments in Detroit history just
seeing you know, Kenny Olsen and Jim McCarty and Derek

(01:09):
stint Holmes out there, and I mean having one of
the greatest drummers in the world, Dennis Chambers on the kid,
and it was just a great time putting this whole
thing together.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Well, that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
So Mark cosup is he heads up the band Slight Return,
and Mark, you've done an incredible job of wrangling all
these people together and coming up with a second show.
So congratulations first off on that. Give me a little
history here of who we're going to see on stage

(01:42):
on March the first out at the Guido Theater in Dearborn.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
Well, we got two of the greatest drummers in history,
Dennis Chambers and Bernard Party, which is very rare to
see these two guys ever together unless it's a drum
clinic somewhere, but actually have them on stage performing together.
Tony Lindsay, he's won eleven Grammy Awards with Santana as
a vocalist, Henry Brown who's the lead vocalist from the

(02:08):
Experience Hendricks tour and also Jimmy Hendrix's cousin. Wow, we're
gonna have yeah four piece horn section, one of the
best horn sections right here from Detroit to Woodward Horns.
We've got, of course Derreck Saint Holmes, who is a
fixture here, you know, a very obviously we know hit
about his career with Ted and just you know, people
love Derek, great guy, incredible musician. Jim McCart who played

(02:31):
in the Buddy Miles Express. Obviously another iconic Detroit guy.
Kenny Olsen, you know, obviously played with Kid Rock, but
he also played with the Buddy and band of Gypsy's Returns.
Peter Keys who played who plays keyboards with Leonard Skinnard.
We got Lance Lopez who was also a bandmate of
Buddy Miles, Jumas Saltan and Jerry Valez who also played

(02:52):
with Hendricks, and we're bandmates of Buddy Miles. And a
couple of our friends, Christian Fabian who's coming in from
New York, and Barry Testa, and you know, well you.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Can elaborate further.

Speaker 5 (03:04):
To man, it's been a lot of fun between the
connections the people I'm connected to and the people.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Booze connected to.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Was nice that we both went to the well and
talked to everybody, and the great part is the overwhelming
response of oh yeah, man, we love Buddy.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
We love to do the show. Who wanted to talk
about it a little bit?

Speaker 4 (03:26):
Yes, I think really the incredible part here is getting
a lot of folks who again have recorded or performed
with Buddy Miles himself, And it really doesn't get any
better than having Jim McCarty up there again, an original
member of the Buddy Miles Express, which was the first

(03:46):
band Buddy put together, the supergroup the Electric Flag it disbanded.
So to have him come up there and relivet some
of those classics that he recorded with not only Buddy Miles,
but Jimmy HENDRICKX, who co produced that album that Jim
McCarty appears on, is truly a wonderful thing.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Well, yeah, Jimmy has you know, every once in a
while he'll open up because he's a pretty quiet guy,
you know in reality, but he has opened up several
times about stories about playing with Buddy Miles, especially at
the last show, but then also the stories about Jimmy Hendricks.
So it is it is really special to have a

(04:29):
guy like Jim McCarty here in Detroit. And also Kenny Olsen,
who you know has picked up on the Experience Hendricks
tour number at times, but Boo. Let me ask you,
how did that connection between Buddy Miles and Jimmy Hendricks.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Where did that start?

Speaker 4 (04:51):
So Buddy had met Jimmy in nineteen sixty four somewhere
in Canada. I believe it was Montreal. They were both
side men. I believe Jimmy was with Ike and Tina
Turner at the time. Buddy Miles was behind Wilson Pickett,
so they had cross paths in nineteen sixty four. They

(05:11):
exchanged stories of the music they were into and what
they were playing. When Jimmy arrived in America for his
epic Monterey Pop Festival debut in America, where he burned
his guitar, one of the first things he did was
seek out Buddy Miles, who was also appearing at that
festival with the Electric Flag, and so they immediately started

(05:35):
jamming before the festival, after the festival, and they had
stayed pretty close up until Jimmy's passing in nineteen seventy.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
I understand there's going to be a new box set
coming out now. I don't think Buddy Miles is on
this new one, but from what I understand, other Vault
material has a lot of the sort of band of
Gypsy's vibe and feel to it from the studio, not
a live recording that Buddy Miles is on and will

(06:07):
be coming out at some point. So I know you
handle a lot of Buddy Miles affairs, and I would
imagine the catalog as well. So have you heard of
anything like that coming out here soon or later?

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Or yes?

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Yes, Buddy's albums have been reissued in America or.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Over in Europe.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
We're working on getting them reissued here in America in
the coming year. As far as the new Jimmy Hendricks
box set, it was recently released. It has thirty eight
or thirty nine tracks on it that focuses heavily on
Jimmy's time with Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
But Buddy Miles does appear.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
On a few of those tracks expercussioners and backing vocals.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Okay, all right, gre Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:57):
So yes, him and Jimmy's recording history is quite extensive. Again,
you know, beginning in sixty seven and all the way
up until seventy. Jimmy's career was very short, but Buddy
was a big part.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Of it, and the guys on the guys on stage,
I mean, you've got some killer guitar players and and
everything else that goes around it. Have just done a
fantastic job last year. Mark, What does it take to
put a set list like this together with so much
iconic music? I mean, I think the show was about

(07:32):
three hours last year.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
What are we looking at this year? Six or seven?

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Well, we should just have a marathon, you know. But
I mean, really was Buddy had so much music. I mean,
he people don't realize. They just think, oh, band of
Gypsy's and he had the also had the other album
that he recorded on New Year's with Carlos Santana and
and why. But they didn't realize he had a dozen
of his own albums, which, you know, people don't think

(08:01):
about the fact that he had such an extensive, you know,
a great solo career and was a headliner for so long,
so much music to pick from. When Boo and I
first talked about the set list, he said, what are
you going to do for the set list? You're the
music director. I said, well, let me get back. Yes,
I started, you know, fishing through all my Buddy Mile
stuff and listening to all the albums very closely and

(08:22):
trying to put together so he always try it.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
The biggest thing with the set list is the flow.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
You got to start strong and then kind of kind
of mellow it out in the middle, and then bring
it back up on a high note in the end.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
And I told the guys, this is going to be
the set list.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
And you know, of course, nobody ever agrees on a
setlist anyway, so get some criticism. Why are you leaving
this out? Why are you putting this in? I said,
just trust me on it. You know, I've been writing
set list ins ninety five and thankfully they did trust
me on it, and I think we had I think
it was a really nice blend of songs that really
did pay tribute to the retrospective of Buddy's career.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
The biggest question.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
People asked me was, well, I don't know, am I
going to know Buddy's music? I said, well, besides Buddy's,
you know, most people know them changes and maybe we
got to live together.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
I'll asked.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
I said, you're gonna you may not know some of them,
like I think Runaway Child is just a killer tune
that opener, and uh, but I said, well do you
like Santana? They're like, well, yeah, I love Santana. Well,
Buddy was played with Santana for years. We're going to
play some of that from his career. You know, do
you like Jimmy Hendrix. Yeah, of course they know the
hendricks stuff, but we're really focused on the great part

(09:35):
was we're able to focus on Buddy's music. People initially thought, oh,
you're doing a band of Gypsy's tribute. We're like, no,
we're not doing a banda Gypsy's trivia. This is a
tribute to Buddy. And I think when they when they
experienced no pun intended that concert, they felt like this
was all about Buddy. Even Henry Brown, who is Jimmy's

(09:55):
cousin lead vocalists on the Experienced Hendricksher said, man, you
guys really did do this for Buddy. This was great,
and I think that that spoke volumes. It's difficult being
the music director and curating the set and leading things
because they're always open to criticism. But I'm I'll listen
to things, but in the end, I'll make the decision

(10:17):
that I feel is best for the overall concert. And
I think it went pretty well well.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
Let me just say go ahead if I can touch
on that just real briefly. A lot of folks who
were leaving the concert last year were raving about, Wow,
I didn't know Buddy was on that song, or I
didn't know Buddy was a.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Part of this song or that song.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
And these are songs they know and love and grew
up with, and so it really just speaks to Buddy's
reach and his legacy.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Yeah, because the set list was fantastic. Let me just
say too, that Mark your band Slight Return that opens
up does a fantastic job of knocking out a bunch
of Hendricks tunes and some Santana music to get people
warmed up up to the Buddy Miles set.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
What is Mark? What is rehearsal like?

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Because you've got guys coming in from all over the country,
you got guys here in Detroit, you got band members
of your own.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
What's that like?

Speaker 3 (11:17):
And how long does it go on? And you know,
tell me a little bit about the rehearsals.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, dress rehearsal was definitely interesting. The night before we
had the theater all set up.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
It was about thirteen fourteen hours and it was because
you know, we had to you got to remember, we
need my sound guy and was recording fifty four channels
of the mix and you got you know, I don't
know how many monitors. We had fifteen sixteen monitors on
stage and you know, you're it. It was dress rehearsal
was crazy and plause. Don't forget a lot of these

(11:50):
my band we've been We had been rehearsing the Buddy
Miles songs well in advance so that we can hold
everything down in case, you know, somebody doesn't have time
to learn something or whatever. But they get old solo
and do their thing. And it was really interesting all
of us playing those songs at one time. And at first,

(12:10):
dress rehearsal was really tough getting everybody.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
At the same page.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
But once we got everybody on the same page, I mean,
it seemed to go pretty well. It took a minute,
you know, because you got again. It's not like you're
bringing in a rhythm section from a particular band to
join us. You're bringing guys that have never played together
on stage.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
People looked at.

Speaker 5 (12:33):
One of the more incredible things that happened is the
synergy between Tony Lindsay and Henry Brown on stage. People
are asking me, how long have these guys been playing together?

Speaker 1 (12:42):
I'm like, one day they a couple of hours.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
You know.

Speaker 6 (12:48):
Yeah, yeah, let's just say that you do have some
of the most prolific artists around the country up on
that stage.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
I mean, I don't know if people really can grasp
just how how great some of these musicians are, and
then for them to all kind of come together and
and make this thing work just shows the professionalism that
you've got on that stage.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
I was just gonna say that the thing is we
got such we got the you know, these are top
notch musicians. I mean, come on, you go in the
summary you see Peter Keys on stage at Piney with
Leonard Skinner. You see, you know, all these guys touring.
You're gonna the irony is our gig is March first,
then Henry Brown comes back as the main singer for
the Experience Hendricks tour March twenty second at the Fox Theater.

(13:40):
I mean, these guys are the pros of pros, So
I knew in that respect, I knew it was gonna
come together just because everybody's so professional about things, and
thankfully it did.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
And it's a very.

Speaker 5 (13:51):
Very good vibe between everybody because they're all very nice
people that play on this show.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
And thankfully it all worked out so boom.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
We talked about at the last show backstage, you know,
trying to take this on the road and making people
more aware of the music and the Buddy Miles legacy.
What's your feelings going forward now into twenty twenty five
after this upcoming show, which once again is March first

(14:21):
in Dearborn at the Guido Theater. You know, have you
put any thoughts to a bit of a tour for
this show and could you round up all these people?

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Well?

Speaker 4 (14:38):
I think logistically it would not be possible to get
all of these all of these same musicians on the
road for a tour like Mark mentioned, you know, Peters
with Lynyrd Skinnyard and they're constantly playing around the world.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Henry Brown's going to be on the road.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
With Experience Hendricks and he has his own band up
and can Anada that performs as well when they're not.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
On the road.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
So uh and Derek stant Holmes and all these all
these folks. To get this cast of musicians on the road,
I would love to do it if if we were
able to pull it off. Now we do have Mark
and I have some plans for a show in New
York City and Los Angeles with a different.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Cast of musicians, so we will.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
You know, stay tuned for that, and we'll do.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
Now.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
I think that you'd want you you would somehow have to.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
Tie Jimmy down, but get McCarty to one of these
or two of these shows.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
If we could kidnap him, we would love to.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
All right, well, I'll work on him. I'll start working
on him now.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
But listen, you guys, I want to just congratulate you
because look at Detroit is very privileged to have this show, uh,
And I hope people are aware of that and go
out and get their tickets in advance or buy them
the night of the show, and get their butts over
there to see not only these exciting and incredible professional musicians,

(16:11):
but just experience the music of not only Hendrik Santana,
but of course of.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Buddy Miles, who is the backbeat to all of that.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
And really, really congratulations to you guys for making people
aware of it and bringing it to the forefront. And
this is going to be a spectacular show. If you
missed it the last time, you've got to see it
this time. So get your tickets in advance and get
on out there, because.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
It's going to be. It's going to be a pretty
important night, I think.

Speaker 5 (16:46):
Really, Oh, thank you, thank you. And you know, one
thing I wanted to mention is I was you know,
I always tell this to me like, I've never seen
a musician in history that's played with.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
So many iconic musicians.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
I mean, Buddy, you know, besides Jim Henderson, Santana, He's
jammed with Steve rayvaugh There's some awesome clips online to
him jamming with Jeff Beck Slash, Steve VI, Buddy Guy,
George Clinton, I mean, Wilson Picking, John McLoughlin, Steven Stills,
Mike Bloomfield, and the list goes.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
On and on and on. I mean, if that doesn't.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
Tell you a lot about what type of in demand
player he was and how much people loved him, I
mean that's a statement right there. Just just mentioning those
names with him, that's a statement itself.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
I'm getting goosebumps right now.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
All right, both listen, Thank you guys. I am proud
to be your MC again this year, so I'm looking
forward to it. And Mark Koza from Slight Return and
Boo once again the curator for the.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
Buddy Miles of State.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
Thank you, guys so much for your time, and we're
all looking forward to it, and we'll have it all
posted up on Facebook and on the website, and we'll
give away some tickets all next week and we will
be ready to rock on March the first.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Now, And thank you, Doug.

Speaker 5 (18:05):
We're so happy you're a part of it again, and
we want to thank you for all your support and
everything you've done for Detroit for the last fifty.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Years for music. I mean, I don't think nobody.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
Has supported Detroit bands like you have, and we really
really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Well, I appreciate that, Mark, and listen, I loved your
band from the first time I heard it, so it's
not hard to support stuff when when it's that good,
So I appreciate it. All right, you guys, well, have
a good one man happy Valentine's date.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Than all right, you guys, have a great night.
