Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Monday friend, Welcome to the thought showers. Sorry for
the delay. It has been kind of crazy last twenty
four hours. So over the weekend I went to New
Orleans with my dad my brother. I guess I didn't
go with them. I met them there for a cigar conference.
We had a great time. It was nice because my
brother's birthday was the previous Monday. My dad's birthday is

(00:22):
a couple of weeks. It was nice to be with them,
have cigars. We had some birthday dinners. All good. Now,
The plan was for me to fly out yesterday Sunday
at ten am back to DC. Got to the airport
eight forty and then they had us lined up to
get on the plane. We are about to get on
the plane. Pilot comes out and says, hey, you guys
have to get out the plane. We need maintenance to

(00:44):
come on. We're okay, like it should be a quick fix.
They go over the intercom like ten minutes later, Hey,
we're missing the part. We have to fly the part
in from Charlotte. And my first thought was why Charlotte
Because we're in New Orleans and American is based out
of Dallas. That'd be a quicker flight. But we had
to wait. I guess it was something to do with

(01:05):
like a little simcards so the plane can detect other planes.
Obviously very important whatever. So they don't really give us
any updates on like what time we're gonna be taken off.
It's just that you know, be ready. And so it
gets to be like noon. Then it got pushed to
four thirty, and that being kind nice because my brother,
my dad, their flights were later, so we got to
have like more time with each other. That was great.

(01:27):
Then it became six thirty, then it was seven thirty.
We're taken off the flight from Charlotte Lands at like
six with the missing part, and I guess there is
an original fight from Charlotte that forgot to bring the
part with, which was kind of crazy. So we got
on the plane and they load us on the plane
at six thirty. I'm thinking, like, okay, we're gonna take off.

(01:48):
They said seven thirty, we're on the planet. Six thirty,
we'll get off early. I hear one of the crew
members say, hey, we can't take off any earlier. They
won't give us clearance to take off early. So way
on the plane for another hour, and then I heard
them talking to somebody else about how they weren't going
to serve food on the plane because the food been
sitting there for eight hours, which was kind of wild
because my first thought was, why did they not take

(02:09):
the food off and replace it? So landed at like
eleven thirty. It's been a long twenty four hours. Honestly,
it kind of feels like it's been an ongoing thirty
six hours. But we're here, We're alive, we're thriving. I
passed out and crashing on Sausa's couch last night because
the option was because Sauce is coming from Dallas, she

(02:30):
landed around the same time as me, the option was
uber back to the station, get my car and drive home.
I probably would got into the station around maybe twelve fifteen,
gotten home around like twelve thirty five. To come back
here like that doesn't seem quite worth it. So crashing
saucege couch. Here we are this morning. We're doing it.
But also I wanted to say thank you. This past

(02:54):
Sunday was the five year anniversary of the new show
of me taking over the show, and it's been It's
crazy in a way, it feels like it's gone by
in a blink of an eye. In a way, it
feels like it's been forever. I remember getting the call
about taking over the show. Got the call on a Friday.

(03:15):
I was on a walk and honestly, I thought that
I was gonna get fired. I kind of thought because
it just seemed like it's weird getting a call from
your boss on a weekend, especially in this industry, and
the way the tone being serious. I was like, Okay,
I guess here we go. And yeah, that Friday, got
the call. Saturday and Sunday we kind of had like

(03:37):
a war room boot camp, but how we're gonna do
the show and all that kind of stuff, and the
team voted for me to be the lead, which was fantastic,
and then we're kind of off to the races. You know.
I think back about it now, it was kind of
as far as launching a show, it was kind of
the best circumstance because of it being COVID, nobody was
in the building at the radio station. So if it

(04:00):
had been that case where everybody was there, I know
there have been a lot of eyes on the show,
like a lot of people coming up to watch physically
watch the show. Luckily, nobody could get in the building
besides us, which I think was probably the best case
scenario because God's chance to breathe a little bit, to
learn a little bit. And I also think it being

(04:21):
COVID and people's listening patterns were different, I got to
experiment a lot more. You know, I've been very lucky
in my career that I spent four years with Dave
Ryan on KATIEWB in Minneapolis. Dave, I think is one
of the most skilled storytellers and creatives on the planet.

(04:42):
I was in Des Moines, Iowa for a leven months
learning from Greg Chance. Greg is one of the most prolific,
just perfectionist, multitasking programming minds on the planet. And then
of course being here with Caine. You know Cain. I
had heard the rumors about how good he was and
how a a wizard he was on the board and
doing all these things at once and calls and stuff,

(05:04):
and that got to watch him do it for I
guess six seven years something like that, and then you know,
getting a chance to finally do the show myself was
a big like, Okay, let's see how this will go.
And I think it was nice. It wasn't like the
pressure wasn't on because you know, behind the scenes with radio,

(05:24):
you know, new shows don't get a long time to
figure it out. It's kind of with TV, you know.
You you get like a season, you know, and if
there's not promise, if there's not positive you know, research,
shows tend to get pulled. And I think that, you know,

(05:45):
I know that not many folks maybe expected us to
last five years, and we have, and that's we're very lucky.
I'm lucky. I have great team, great staff. Well, it's
lucky for you listening though, Like I'm fully aware that
there are so many there are things trying to get
your attention. Podcast, music, you know, books on tape, whatever.

(06:06):
The fact that you listen to the show and come
to events. Uh, you know, I can't stay this enough.
You're the reason we have jobs, you know what I mean?
Like you commenting on Instagram and listening to the podcast.
That keeps us employed. It's no different than if we
were a store and we were selling a product. You
listening is buying the product, and that keeps us in business.

(06:29):
So I can't thank you enough. Was it a challenging
five years? Yeah, in a lot of ways. I think
to take over a show from somebody you looked up
to and somebody who left certainly massive shoes, both physically
and metaphorically. Of course, it was a lot, and I

(06:52):
put a lot of pressure on myself. And yeah, I
remember the first people I called that I called from UH.
I called my good friend Charlie Lane. He was one
of the first calls I got. I call a good
friend Bobby Bones and just kind of like, you know,
it was ready to go. I remember Bobby said to me,
welcome the big leagues. And it's crazy. This is always

(07:13):
in my dream ever since I was in high school,
was to host my own show, and now we're here,
and just to have the staff that we do, and
you know, with Sauce winning Radio hosts of the Year.
And I had somebody ask me on Instagram my favorite
memory the last five years, I'm like, there's so many again,
Sauce Radio Hosts of the Year, Rose became a mom
times too, Hoodie got married, Eric doing his Eric thing.

(07:34):
There's been so many huge milestones the last five years
that it's been powerful. I mean, the comedy album going
number one in the world, Crazy raising one hundred thousand
dollars for Fisher House crazy, all this stuff that I
could never have imagined happening. So my plan was to

(07:54):
celebrate the five years yesterday that got Kaye drail because
of the flights. But anyway, the main thing I almost
want to say is thank you. I would not be
here without you. I know people say that, but actually
the sole reason that intern John is still around is
because of you listening and coming out supporting. So I
want to say thank you. Here's to five more and

(08:17):
then maybe five more after that, who knows. Have a
fantastic Monday's Thoughts Shower.
