Speaker 1 (00:00):
Al Gatulo.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
How are you? I'm good, boys, how are we doing?

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Not as good as Karl Anthony Towns man, that dude,
and Bed's right, I mean with the palms up to
the stars every now and then, questioning calls. I mean,
if we could stop with a little bit of that
other than that. Man, he's one of the best dudes
in the postseason.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Yeah he is, and that's true. He's got to stop
with the questioning the calls and look at just play
your game, all right, play the game and things will
take care of itself. They did great against the Celtics.
They've come against an Indiana team that look, they thought
going into Game one, hey we got this, it's gravy.
Then they go up with a big lead, they blow
it in the fourth, Indiana comes back and wins. They figure, okay,

(00:41):
game two will even the series. Not a problem, we'll
go back tide. We'll take care of business. They lose again.
That was very humbling. Now to come out in Game
three and desperation, that's what they needed. They get that win.
They have to play the same way tonight. The game
is not over until you hear that final buzzer and
the clock is in Zero's year. They can't give up,
put the foot on the gas and just go. And

(01:04):
if Brunton and brol Anthony Towns don't get going, that's
where they're gonna have a problem.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Can you take us through the emotional roller coaster of
the fan base from the Celtics win and the climbing
the towers of the streets of New York to the
epic loss in game one, to going down two to
where we are now at a two to one series
that if the Knicks win, let's go party in the

(01:30):
streets again.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah. Look, I think the Celtics series, I think was
very was eye opening for Knicks fans. I think Knicks
fans expected, Okay, we'll win a game or two here,
but maybe Boston is going to beat us in the
end because they are the defending champions. But the fact
that they overcame such adversity in that series and took
care of business the way they did when they really
should have closed it out in game five, It took

(01:53):
into game six. Okay, fine, but they were pumped, they
were jacked. The city was electric. They hadn't seen this
in a very long time time. Then you go in,
now you're playing in the Eastern Conference Finals. You're playing
against the team that you know, let's face it, Indiana
is a decent team, but they can beat them. And
they figure, we have the momentum on our side, and

(02:13):
sure enough that momentum, the air just comes right out
of them. But Nick fans are still jacked. After game one,
they figured that, no problem, we'll take care of business.
But after game two they seem deflated a little bit.
And maybe, you know, I know that some are saying that, well,
you know, all the celebrities of this match, that's a
bunch of nonsense. There were celebrities there in the nineties,
there were celebrities there in the early two thousands when

(02:35):
they were going to the finals. That's always been the case.
That's what the Garden does best. They get the celebrities
to come out and you know, and root on their team.
And a lot of them are die hard Nick fans,
and that's just fly by night. They kind of float in.
They're die hard Nick fans. So the fan base is
going to be there, but they've got to take care
of But you need to come back to the Garden
tonight Thursday night, with this series tied it to If

(02:59):
you don't it's over on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Well, and talking to Alcatula from ninety seventy the answer
in New Year talk about the Garden and it's magic though,
because if you're a Pacer, you remember Reggie Miller as
a kid. If you're a Celtic or anybody else, I
don't care if it's Yukon playing there. They want to
play against Saint John's at the Garden or anybody else.
In fact, by the way, you kindall be playing in
the Jimmy v Foundation next year at you know, in

(03:25):
the fall, but describe that as an opposing team. I
don't think people fear the Garden. I think they want
to show off in the garden. Would you agree.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
That that is exactly right. They want to show off
in the garden because it's the mecca. It is the
place where champions are made. But you know, let's face it,
the Knick seven won a championship since the seventies. You know,
they came close to ninety four, didn't make it happen.
Ninety nine was a magical run, but they didn't have
a viewing and it just didn't happen. So this is
a this is a city that is thirsting for an

(03:54):
NBA championship. It's very much like they you know, they
want to see the Mets who win a World Series.
They'd love to see the Nets, you know, win something.
They'd love to see something happen inside Madison Square Garden.
So that that is a big deal for the fan,
But you're right, for the opposing team, it's even better.
It's that next level stage. And let's not forget you

(04:14):
mentioned the Pacers when Reggie Miller was there, when he
did that choke that Joe Thick. They lost that game,
so everybody uses that it's sort of the catalysts and
I'm like, yeah, that spurred on the Knicks to make
sure that they took care of business. But you know,
they had another step and they couldn't get it done.
So you know, let you know, that's the thing you
have to keep in mind. It's not enough to just

(04:36):
get there. Now, you've got to win that championship. You know,
the Yankees have done it over the course of their franchise.
They're really the only team in the New York area
that has really done it over the course of the franchise. Yeah,
you can make the argument the Giants have as well,
because They've been in five Super Bowls and they have
one four of them, so you know when they're there,
they take care of business. But the Super Bowl's played

(04:57):
at a neutral site. It's not like it's played in
a home court, so it's a little bit different. In
the NBA, in the World Series, in the NHL, those games,
those finals are played on the home court, and people
want to play in Madison Square Garden because of the
history behind it.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
I'm glad you brought that up. I've been trying to
explain to my Indiana Pacer fan friends of how that
series ended in ninety four after that Choke signed, but
nobody wants to hear that. I got two observer. I
think there's two distinct mismatches in this series. I think
no one can check Kat like Miles. Miles Turner is

(05:33):
a good option, but he cannot check him on defense,
especially if he's making those threes in stretching him out.
And on the other side, am I seeing this is
Brunson a little bit of a liability on defense.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
A little bit because I think Brunson wants to be
the guy. Brunson wants to be that John Starks in
this team, right He wants to be that guy who
sort of, you know it, comes out and takes care
of business and hits every shot that he takes. But
let's not forget on. Starks had a great had a
great UH Eastern Conference Finals, goes into the finals, and
in those final games didn't do so well and pat

(06:08):
Riley kept going back to him and he kept missing shots.
So Brunton needs to sort of, I don't want to
say take a step back, because you don't want to
lose that aggressiveness, but he has to understand you're the
point guard. You need to create, you need to move,
You need to move that ball around, get other people involved,
and if the shot is there, then take it. He
needs to sort of take a page from Magic Johnson's book. Right,

(06:29):
Magic made everybody better on the court, but when Magic
needed to step up and take shots, he certainly could
knock them down. We know that first NBA Finals that
Magic had had to play center because the big man
Kareem was hurt and did did the job and took
care of business. Bruntson can do the same thing. He
just needs to sort of take a deep breath, just
just just sort of curve that energy just a little

(06:51):
bit until you need to let it loose instead of Hey,
I'm going to expend everything in the first or second
quarter and then I got no gas left in the
tank by the fourth quarter.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Tell me about Met fans and Yankee fans. You know,
obviously they got to be happy with the way the
teams are playing, But will they allow Juan Soto to
continue to not crush it while Judge keeps doing what
he's doing on the other side of town.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
You know, here's my argument about Wan Soto Yankee fans.
When they push played at the at the stadium for
the Subway series, all these Yankee fans are screaming, have
been signs and this and that and whatever? You do
realize he was a rented player, right, They traded for him,
they got him. There was no guarantee that we're going
to keep him at the end of the season, and
in the end, he decided to take the money and

(07:36):
go to the Mets. So as a yet, if I
were a Yankee fan, I'd be like, Okay, thanks, thanks
for your one season and let's move on. And somebody
was complaining, oh, they didn't do a tribute video too.
I said, for what what tribute? Hey, got us through
a world theories and we lost. I mean, I don't
understand that there's no tribute, you know, video for a
guy who played for six months. On the flip side

(07:57):
of it, Met fans, I don't think are as frustrated
as people think there. I have a group that in
a Facebook chat and a lot of them a passion
of Met fans, and one guy is always just like, well,
I can't believe this is this, and I go, you realize,
it's two months into the season. Let's take a step back.
You don't win the championship in May, you win it
in October and November. He's going he's going to pick

(08:19):
up his pace. I like the fact that he's selected.
I like the fact that he's saying, here's my target,
here's where I want the ball. If it's not there,
I'm not swinging. So either I'm going to work out
a walk or I'm going to strike out. But either way,
I Am not going to hit anything that I don't
want to hit. And I think for a guy like that,
for the money that he's making, I think other people
would overcompensate and say, oh my god, I got to

(08:41):
get a hit every single time, every single time. He
is just taking it a step back and saying it'll
be there, and met fans have to just sort of
take a step back and say, hey, you know what,
He's going to be there for us when we need him.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
I love Judge so much and I love watching him play.
This year, it seems like he's even better than what
he's always been. And I think there's two things that
he's chasing, obviously Ted Williams and four hundred. Last guy
to do. It would be great to see him hit
four hundred. It's just weird because I track ally track
three hundred hitters. Dibbs were down to sixteen starting Monday.
Right now, Lois, we've been all season sixteen people hitting

(09:15):
three hundred or more, and then Judge brings up the
average hitting three ninety eight. That's just amazing. Now that's
against Ted Williams. I also heard today he's on pace
to catch Babe Bruce nineteen twenty one total base in
a season kind of thing. But then on the other
side of the country, this show, hey guy, and the
numbers he's putting up are so comparable and so much

(09:38):
fun to watch. Like for Judge, is it somewhat of
a shadow for like these legends and that guy over
there in LA to really illustrate what he's been able
to do in the last four years.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yeah, I think, you know, you really have to take
the body of work that Aaron Judge has done, you know,
again by himself. He doesn't pitch. All he does is hit.
He plays a decent outfield. Is not great, but he
plays a decent outfield, but he hits the ball in
timely situations when he needed it. Now in October, he
hasn't really come through yet, and you know he will.
I think he will. I think the Yankees need to

(10:14):
put a couple of more pieces around him to sort
of help. Soto helped him last year to get more
pitches that you know, he had a hit. But look
at the first two months this year. You said it,
the guy is chasing Ted Williams. He's playing a much
better rounded game. Pitchers are not able to get him
out with any pitch they want. Look at show. Hey,
the other night Peterson was It wasn't Peterson, it was

(10:36):
I forget who it was, but locked him down and
didn't get a hit. So, you know, right against the match.
So you know, I think the difference here is that
Judge has matured every year as a player and has
gotten better, which is even more remarkable due to the
fact that of his age too, that he is getting
older and still hitting at such a high quality level.

(10:57):
Yankees made a great move making this guy in the cap,
giving him the money that he is well deserved, and
I think at some point he's going to bring a
championship for the champions team.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Yeah, that was a tough night, zero for four with
three strikeouts, which is very rare for him, very rare
for him. As far as some of the other New
York sports, you know, this is gaining a lot of traction,
which I think is total bunk, not getting the number
he wanted for your quarterback. Pick your thoughts about some
of the stuff that has talked about as far as

(11:28):
what's the most important thing for the Jets and the
Giants this year to do?

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Win that? Yeah, win games. I mean it's pretty simple.
The Jets have, the Jets have a week schedule. They
should be able to eke out a few wins. You know,
it's a new regime, it's a new way of doing things,
But will it be the same old Jets? To me,
I feel like I feel like the Jets need like
a major sage cleaning, like somebody needs to go in
and just saves the whole building and get all of

(11:54):
the evil spirits out, if that's possible, and hopefully they
can sort of do yeah. On the other side though,
on the other side, though, with the Giants, this is
a different set of circumstances. We talked about this last time,
but I think that you know it bears repeating. The
Giants are putting themselves in a position to win in
the future, but they need to win now. And so

(12:16):
what do you do here? You bring in a Jackson Dart, great,
I love the move. If he can win the job
in training camp, great, But if he doesn't, then you
know he sits and Russell Wilson is your guy. But
what is the goal here? Is the goal to win
deven games as opposed to four? Is it to win
ten games to make the playoffs? I don't really understand

(12:37):
the Giants' identity at this point because if you're going
to get rid of the GM and the head coach
at the end of the season, then why did you
do the things that you did this year? I would
have brought in a whole new regime and start over,
especially if you're Jennison the quarterback. You're getting rid of
all the other ancillary stuff around. You know, you have
a defense that should wreak havoc among a lot of

(12:57):
the teams in the NFL come this season. But what
are you doing offensively? You've got two very good running
backs that can put together a lot of numbers. You're
putting the receivers in place. This is a team that,
honest to God, I don't want to say dominate, but
should be very competitive in the NFC East. And I
think the only team that they really have to worry
about is the Eagles. I think they can beat the Commanders,

(13:19):
they can take care of the Cowboys. The Eagles are
the ones that they have to beat, and they have
to play them very quickly this season. So I think
if they take care of business in the first two
months of the season, this could be a great season
for the Giants. But if it goes south very quickly,
you're going to see wholesale changes, and maybe that's not
a good thing.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Is it a bad thing if Jackson Dart doesn't play,
or is it a good thing that he's not playing
this season?

Speaker 2 (13:42):
I think I think if they're sold on. If he
plays in training camp and plays in the first preseason game,
which he probably will know thee extended minutes, if he
plays well enough that Brian Dabele thinks that he can
do the job, then you need to put him in
there and see what happens. But what I don't want
to see is the situation where there are they've got

(14:03):
two wins and eight losses and okay, let's throw the
rookie in and let's let them get beat up for
the last you know, seven or eight games of the season.
I don't know if that's necessarily a learning experience for him.
When you know that the head coach and the general
manager are going to be on their way out the door.
I'd rather let them lose with Russell Wilson saved this
kid for a year and let him start fresh with

(14:23):
a brand new head coach.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Al as always, how are the beer cast going?

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Beer Cancer going great? We're having a good time and
you know, just having some fun. We had We had
some good stuff last week. We got a big pizza
party and beer coming up in July with a brewery
on Staten Island for money that all the proceeds go
to charity. And what's better than eating pizza and drinking
beer and listening to music for four hours on a
Saturday in July.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Nothing better, nothing al Thank you so much for your time, buddy,
I appreciate on short notice saying you out.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
You got it. Boys, have a good one.
