Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mister Bob Joyce. He is the voice of Yukon women's basketball,
also part of the football broadcast, and also the play
by play voice of the Yukon men's hockey from the
Yukon Sports Network. Bob Joyce, So, Bob, I know you guys,
it was cold. How was the parade?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
It wasn't bad. Weather was okay.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Temperatures what upper forties, low fifties.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Kurt and I were.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Out handing, handing out little Fox Sports ninety seven nine footballs.
Oh yeah, to a lot of little kids. We had
some fun yeah, which we tried to meet. We made
it a point to give it to kids, even though
some of the adults wanted them, but we said, no,
they're for the kids.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
But it was fun.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
It was fun to get out and see some of
the fans out there and hey, look we're as Gino said,
we're now the parade capital of the world. I don't
know if that's true, but as far as championship parade, yes,
But it was fun.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
It was a great atmosphere.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Gov talked for a few minutes and then it was
a steady dose of Azy Page and Gino to round
it out.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
But it was fun.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
More Pagebeckers jerseys than you could ever imagine on young
little girls, boys, adults. It was wild to see a
lot of Becker's paraferna out there, but it was fun.
And you know A's He's already said, let's run it
back next year. So the Gauntlets out to try to
repeat as national champs, and Gino would like to think
so is he kind of backed that up as well.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
As much as I rage against the basketball capital of
the world, Moniker, I mean, gosh, three straight years of
parades for Yukon Trinity D three champs and celebrating championships
all over place in the world of basketball. But I've
always or not always, But in the last couple of weeks,
been wanting to ask you this question, just in your
mind watching this team really in the last couple of months,
even before the Big East Tournament, what was like an

(01:39):
unsung player who really stepped up our an unsung moment
that this championship. Wouldn't it be possible if that were
to happen?

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I would think the South Carolina game eight weeks ago
changed the entire complexity of the season. The three games
that they had lost a lot of similarities. A they
weren't shooting the three well, b they weren't defending the
three well. And see they weren't getting stops in the
fourth quarter of those three games. And they all and
with the exception of Notre Dame, the other two obviously
they had chances to win. Suddenly the switch flipped for

(02:09):
that South Carolina game, And I'm gonna go back to
even the game day broadcast they did prior to that game.
Gina was on the set and he said, I like
this team in March, the makeup of this team in March.
And then an hour and a half later on the floor,
they go out and just absolutely smoke South Carolina, and
suddenly it's like, Oh, where's this team been all year?
The way they just played dictated tempo defense, rebounding the

(02:32):
whole nine yards. And then they made thirteen threes too.
That didn't hurt, but you could just see a different Yukon.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Look.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
A video went out last week after that South Carolina
game of page in locker room saying, hey, we do
this every game now for the rest of the season,
nobody's beating us. Well, it turned out nobody did beat them,
but to see what they did and the progression they
went through. They added really putting a lot of ball
pressure on inbounds after made baskets the Creighton and Marquette

(02:59):
games to end the regular season a little bit in
the postseason worked it well, but everybody just stepped up
here and there in little points. I mean, Jenell Alfie
was fabulous in the Final Four game. A'sy had gone
zero for nine in the Elite eight game.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
What does Gino do.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
He draws up a play on the first possession of
the fourth quarter that has an elevator screen at the
file line with Aubrey Griffin, who gave them eight sensational
minutes in that Elite eight game in the fourth quarter,
and Asy knocks down on top of the key three
and that gets the ball rolling again to pull away.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
But what they did against.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
UCLA and South Carolina and the championship in the Final
four weekend was just incredible. And that's the makeup of
you come though. They have this uncanny habit, and it's
a great habit if you're a Yukon fan, to make
a good team look really bad, and that's what they
did in both those games, especially UCLA. The same kind
of approach that Dan Hurley had in the National Championship

(03:49):
game the year before, let Lauren Betts get hers. Although
I thought Jenell Alfie did a really good job the
nine passes in the post, but they guarded everybody else
well and they didn't do anything. Lauren Bett's got no help,
and the Huskies were able to dictate the pace they
made shots.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
And same thing with South Carolina.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
They just put so much pressure on them with their
offensive success that the two teams just couldn't keep up
with Yukon.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Talking Abob Joyce, he's the voice of Yukon women's basketball
and he's joining us right now. I honestly I agree
with what Gino said. You still got to play whoever
you got to play, and having to play Oklahoma and
USC and UCLA before you get to South Carolina. I mean,
you couldn't. You couldn't have forced the Yukon women to

(04:35):
battle all these different, you know, types of teams to
get to the championship game. I mean, I thought they
did a great job Oklahoma against Beers. Yeah there's no
Juju Watson for uc USC, but you know what that
they can't control that. And then like you said, against
Bets and UCLA, you know, Jenna l Alfie. You know,
she didn't score a ton of points, but she did

(04:56):
do great rebounding work and great defense she did.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
I mean they fronted bets and on occasion they would
even double team. But I thought her energy, just the
way she forced a lot of tips to help get
them steals, really set the tone in that game.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
But you're right, Dibbs.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Other than Raya Marshall of USC Biggs had a big
problem in the NCAA tournament against Yukon because they just
are not used to the pace that the Huskies play with,
and when they're making shots and they're getting rebounds and
getting out in transition, it's really hard.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
I mean, Reagan Beers was sucking win.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
The first half of that game was kind of like
a fluke because you kind only shot thirty percent, but
a lot of the looks that they get in every
other game that they make, they just didn't happen to
go in.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
But that was the bad news.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
But the good news is they were only down by four,
and then the third quarter they totally flipped the switch
really fast and the game winning Yukon's favor. And then
Lauren Betts and I remember this the use LSU game
the Elite eight game, she had played a lot ls.
She was kind of pushing the pace. She went to
sit down, and you know, you could see a close
up of her telling the trainer, I can't breathe right now,
I'm trying to catch my breath. Well, that falls right

(06:02):
into Yukon's hands when they were able to get out
and transition, That's exactly what they did. And then I
just think the third quarter in the championship game, I
think South Carolina just kind of quit. I mean they
had basically put up the white flag, proving that the
first game eight weeks ago wasn't a fluke, and then
they did it totally differently as way as scoring the
basketball goes. But they have no answers for Sarah Strong

(06:25):
my goodness. I mean probably in hindsight, she probably should
have been the mop of the Final four, as good
as as he was. But Sarah was so dogone, consistent,
and the job that she did in some cases against
Lauren Betts in the Final four game was just so
much fun to watch. I Mean, she had her way.
She's got a basketball IQ of not a freshman, she's
more like a senior. Of course, having mom and dad,

(06:47):
having played the game, and her banging around it her
entire life certainly helps. But boy, I'm going to miss
the chemistry between Sarah and Paige. I mean, it was
something else, but it just came together. And it's just
more proof Robin Ben that very few coaches in the
country prepare their teams for March as well as Gino does.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
We're expecting some WNBA draft selections here coming up tonight.
Pagebackers obviously the top of everyone's big board. I think
it's a foregone conclusion that she's going to be a
Dallas wing unless there's some trading up top for the night.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
I don't think Kerr Miller's letting that go.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
No, I don't think so. But what about Kaitlyn Sheen
and Aubrey Griffin. Is there a chance that they get drafted?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
There?

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Is there are three rounds now because of the expansion.
Gino brought that up yesterday. I mean, a lot's going
to be if you know what you know. Gino's had
discussions with GMS about those two. Irby's still not quite
one hundred percent yet, so that's one thing. But I
think Caitlin Stock certainly went up in the NCAA tournament.
I mean, you don't turn it over in the last

(07:44):
three games of the postseason for the biggest games of
the year.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
That's so good.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
She probably has to work on her perimeter shot even more,
although she had a pretty good year from a long distance,
because you've got to be a three tiered scorer in
the WNBA. But a lot's going to be in how
how they're going to fit into whoever drafts them. I
think that will go a long way and determining whether
they get drafted or not. But if they don't, I
would think they'll both get invited to camps for sure.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I know you're a hockey guy. Kind of talk about
Alex Ovechkin passing Gretzky for some of our younger listeners
that may not have followed Gretzky's career, and how great
he was and how difficult it is to stay that
long in the league and score that many goals.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Yeah, and it's wild to think they did it in
both in the exact amount of games when a vegan
record that is absolutely real. That's that's wild to even think.
I mean, think of the Gretzky teams, Rob that he
played with, he played with Messia and curry and coffee,
and my the countless amazing players that he had in Edmonton.

(08:47):
And I mean it was not just the goals. For
Gretzky was the assist. That's when they were a high
flying and a lot of fun to watch. Vechkin does
it a little differently, but he's he's a goal scorer,
just a pure goal scorer, finds different ways to get
it done in a different age of style of hockey
that's different from the old days. I mean, heck, they
put the red line in as a as a two

(09:08):
line pass when Gretzky and those guys played because they
were so dangerous, and then finally they got rid of it.
But just to see what those two have done and
the way they've done it differently has just been so
much fun to watch. I mean, Gretzky is just the
consummate playmaker. He's one of the all time best in
the NHL. I mean, Ovechkin certainly is too. He's certainly
you're what you would define as a pure goal scorer,

(09:31):
and Gretzky is a playmaker and a goal scorer. So yeah,
they're different, but they've gotten to the same goal. And
good for Alex.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Talking to Bob Joyce Yukon Sports Network. I mean, we
were so close to having the ice bus and the
frozen four he shot away, But I loved how it
really ended up. I mean, obviously, if Yukon was national
champions that would be the best. But for Western Michigan,
man Oberon is flowing little caesars for everyone, Like Grand
Rapids is on fire today.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Talk about just the.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Run and how we've kind of got to keep an
eye on some of these I don't like, do you
say mid majors in the world of hockey in college
I don't know what to call this group, But congrats
to Western Michigan beating Boston you for the national champions.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Well, the conference that they play in has won more
national championships like in the last fifteen years in any
conference in college hockey.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Who are they? They're in the same conference with Denver, Denver,
Okay are the Wolverines in that now? They're in the
Big Ten?

Speaker 3 (10:27):
Since the Big Ten broke up to go exclusively to hockey,
they've not won a national championship. Interesting, so Western Michigan, Denver,
I think Colorado College is in that tang.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
They gotta do some track.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
They've got some effect. Yukon's opening next season out in Colorado.
I think they're playing the Colorado College down in Colorado
Springs next year, somewhere down in that general area, because
Dan Connelly told me that.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
But yeah, that league's a really good league. I mean, Denver.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Is is the Yukon of college hockey. They've won a
ton of national championships. They've been this so many Frozen Fours.
It was fun to see Western Michigan. They've been to
the tournament so many times. Always disappointment. A lot of
people thought they that this could be their year, and
you know, UMass took them hard in the NCAA tournament.

(11:14):
They get to the Frozen Four, they beat Denver. I
mean they'd played Denver. That was the fourth meeting between
those two teams, and a third time they went overtime.
The second time they went double overtime.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Great game.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
So that that was a fabulous game. I mean, the
Davis kid, the net mighter played spectacularly well for Denver.
Western Michigan though, just really really good and I'm not
shocked that they beat BU the way they did. Bu's
defense has been a little suspect, but you also got
some breaks I mean, but hey, look, you know what,
you make your own breaks. I mean, they didn't have
to play Michigan State because they lost to Cornell. Cornell

(11:46):
gave them absolute everything in a three to two overtime
victory for BU just to get to the Frozen Four,
and then BU beats up on Penn State, So good
for them. It was a nice run for j pendolfhis team.
They're not going away any where. Hockey East is still
going to be great next season. But the good thing
about the Yukon Huskies, they don't lose a ton the

(12:08):
four kids who graduated. Obviously, they lose Kalum Tung to
the wolf Pack. He sign a pro contract.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Been doing good too for I heard right.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
I guess he got hurt yesterday, is from what I
heard late in the game. But it seems like right
now that Joey Muldowney and Jake Richard are both coming
back next season and that should be great for the Huskies.
And I think they're getting a second goaltender time music
look's not going anywhere, so they're still going to be
up there. Yeah, I mean, this is not a fluke,
a one hit wonder for Yukon hockey and you hope

(12:38):
that's not the case. Obviously, losing Hudson Shandor and John Spetts,
two fifth year guys that you just absolutely love it.
I have enjoyed having both of them to call their
games for the last five years and watch them grow
and just mature in outstanding young men. But it'll be
a different look, but it still should be a very
good team next year for the Huskies young defenseman Blossoming,

(13:00):
it's just gonna be fun. The lines are gonna obviously
be tinkered around a little bit. But tattles back, he
slips back, Fraser's back. Yeah, they're gonna be fun. They're
gonna be They're gonna be a solid team next year.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Once again, Bob, as always, thanks for stopping in. We
appreciate your time and we'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
All right, Dibbs, I start umpiring tomorrow, So oh, goat
that zone tight. Bobby always
