Speaker 1 (00:09):
Astros fans.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Cheers, Rocky Luckey.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Welcome to the Crawford Box Casts. Proud lead Ford for
you by Crawford Bach from Carmack Brewy you're.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Getting that bear?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Oh my godness, the Crawford Box Cast starts now here
we go. Here's Chris Gordy and Ross Viail.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
And what is happened? Everybody? Welcome into an all new
edition of the Crawford box Cast, presented by Carbock Brewing
and the Crawford Bach. Chris Gordy here with you alongside
Ross VIIEL and I want to pass along to you guys. Uh.
Why of great things going on over at Carbock Brewing
right now? Uh the new pizza and pints. If you
have not been there yet, you need to go check
them out. They just said their grand opening. It is

(00:57):
the spot where ice cold beer flows and our pizzas
are made with love. You can get on over there.
It's right there on the grounds of Carbock Berring outside
next to the beer garden, next to the shop and
really cool place. Ross has been over there a couple
of times and done some shows.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
I've had some beer and I've had some pints. I
mean I've had some pintes and some pizza there.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
And the best part is they got the Krauwfford Buck
on tap, so you can get fresh draft Crawford Bock
and they got to drink it. They got two huge
Monster TV screens inside. So I mentioned this because you
got air conditioned inside pizza and pines, you can watch
the Astros. They got cool like bench style seating. You
can bring the family, family friendly all that stuff. Or

(01:40):
as these temps start to get a little cooler ross
in the coming weeks, you can just take your pizza
and head on out into the beer garden and I'm
sure they're going to be having astros playoff games and
all that on the big screen. So just letting you
guys know, if you haven't been over there yet to
Carbuck bring and checked out the new pizza and pints,
make sure you go do that. They've been having tons
of people out there rush new pizzas. I don't know

(02:02):
if I'm saying this right. The e Lote Pizza Okay,
bold cheesy masterpiece pack with smoky corn, creamy goodness and
a crunch that screams fiesta. You need to go check
that out over there at the Carbuck Brownings. So anyway,
really cool stuff going on. They're really cool stuff going
on with the Astros. As Ross, we were getting in

(02:24):
a crunch time here we are down to downt week.
Come five series to go. The Astros will begin, as
as of this recording, three games out in LA against
the Angels, three games out in San Diego, and then
they come back for their last home stand of the season,
when the Astros played it in may Park again, it
will be the last home stand of the regular season.

(02:45):
They'll play four against the Angels, three against the Mariners,
and then they'll finish the season on the road three
against the Cleveland Guardians. And as it stands now Ross Luckily,
the Astros find a way to win on Thursday, avoid
the sweep at the hands of the A'sarors go and
blow their game light against the Rangers. So the division
lead back to four and a half. And I keep

(03:06):
saying this, it'd be really nice to get to that
Seattle game, that Seattle series, and be still four and
a half, five and a half, six and a half up,
where you don't have to worry about the worst thing
you could do is get to there. It's like three
and then it's like, oh god, if they sweep us,
they can go back and win this division. So you
got a little breathing room here. You want to keep
that breathing room going. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Absolutely, And it's I mean, this is what it's going
to come down to. Look, if you've got seven games
coming up against the Angels and you falter or you're
losing these series, or you're going like three and four
or something like that, then yeah, you deserve to have
that matter. You deserve to have the Seattle Mariners to
come in here with a chance to take the Al
West crown from you. Take care of the business that's
in front of you. You have Kyle Tucker now back

(03:48):
in the lineup, Alex Bregman has been playing every day.
This starting rotation outside of Verlander has still been pretty
good for the most part. The bullpen back into the
bullpen is what it is, very simple. It's at your
The Aost crown is sitting right in front of you,
and all you have to do. You don't have to
answer any crazy reddles, you don't have to defeat any
big bosses. You just got to beat the Angels.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, and they should be able to do that.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Now.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
One other thing I do want to throw in because
people were making a big deal about them losing two
out of three of the Oakland A's. The A's, I
want to say, since July something had the third best
record in baseball, so they had been playing good baseball.
So again, you know, you want to take care of
trash against the A's. But Hunter Brown even said after
a start, he goes, hey, man, that's a pretty good lineup.
Like they're hard to I was throwing my best stuff

(04:36):
at them and they were hitting me. So, like, you know,
maybe sometimes you just tip your cab and go. Maybe
the Oakland A's aren't as terrible as you know, the
record says they are. They've played much better here in
recent weeks. But yeah, you finished things off like we
said with the Angels, the Padres, the Angels, the Mariners,
the Guardians. Now there's an outside chance here Ross. If
the Astros play really well down the stretch, they could

(04:58):
maybe catch now Guardians, for you know, the second best record.
You're you're five and a half back of the Guardians.
You're six and a half back in the Yankees. I mean,
both those teams would have to Here's the other thing.
The Royals are only four back in their division from
the Guardians. So the Royals, if they got hot and

(05:18):
you've sweep the Guardians, then the season there's a chance
the Royals jumped them and they win the division. But
just as far as like trying to get that first round,
but it feels like the Astros are bound. You're gonna
be playing a walk on round.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yeah, I think they're pretty well pretty well locked in.
I mean, you would need the eggs. Like you said,
it's not only the Guardians that you have to surpass,
it is the the Royals are ahead of you as well,
and you have the same amount of wins as the Twins.
So uh, you'd have to really start ripping off all Like, now,
could the Astros be playing the Angels and the Padres

(05:50):
and go, you know what, what is that ten games
go eight and two over that stretch. Absolutely it could happen,
but you're also gonna eat not only that, you're gonna
need what six up, You're gonna need basically them to
go two and eight over that stretch. So it just
doesn't seem very likely down the stretch. As we go here,
you're probably gonna be locked into a number three seed
and then we'll see who they're going to be playing

(06:11):
as far as a wild card as of right now,
how far ahead did you say the Guardians are of
the Royals, like three games or two and a half
or something, Okay, four games, So yeah, it's probably gonna
be the Guardians as a two seed, you as a
three seed taking on whoever it is the Twins are
the Royals, take care of business at home and then
get onto the Alds and then hopefully minimum back to
another ALCS eight straight, which would just be insane.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Let me tell you how things set up here, just
so like we can all get our bearings and kind
of get an idea for how this thing's going to
pop out. The Astros play their final regular season series
twenty seventh, twenty eighth, and twenty ninth of September. It's
a Friday, Saturday Sunday in Cleveland. Most likely we'll see
where you are. Maybe you've already locked up the American
League West at that point.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
I think those games, maybe at least the last two,
won't matter.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
If you swept the Barners and you're popping Champagne in
the Mariners series, and you go up to Cleveland, call
and we don't have anything to worry about. However, it's
more likely you are still trying to win something there.
You are still trying to win some games. So the
question is what's the rotation that weekend? Are you using
some of your best arms? Because here's the scenario. Ross
You've finished your season finale on Sunday the twenty ninth,

(07:18):
you're off Monday. The thirtieth walk Cart starts Tuesday, October first,
so you're literally two days after the regular season ends.
You're playing a walkcard series and it's the first one
to two wins. So you could theoretically play Walkcard Game
one Tuesday, Walkcard Game two Wednesday, Walk Card Game three, Thursday,

(07:40):
Off Day, Friday, Alds Game one Saturday.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
I will predict that the last couple of games against
the Guardians aren't going to matter. I'm betting the way
that you're four and a half ahead of Seattle. You
have all these games coming up against the Angels. Like
I just said, you've got to really go on a
run in Cleveland and can in the city really have
to collapse for you to catch them for a two seed.
And in which case, if you do, I mean, then yeah,

(08:05):
you're starting your guys that weekend. That's the only way
the scenario I could see is if you rip off
a ton of wins and you've got that two seed
within your grasp to where you don't have to play
until what Friday or Saturday after the game on Sunday,
and you can really line up your rotation. That's the
only way I see them. But I think it's gonna
be they're gonna land smack dab in the middle to
the point of where they stave off the Mariners. Everything's

(08:28):
all kosher that last weekend series and you're not able
to catch the Guardians, and then game one, you're able
to start fromber likely Game two for a Hunter Brown
and then well from there, that's where things start to
get a little questionable.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
I should say. Yeah. And again the question is to
your point, if they get to that those last couple
games of the regular season, do you bring up somebody
possibly from Triple A, to come up and make a
you know, make a start for you know, I don't know.
Maybe you wouldn't do with aj blue Ball because you
believe in him. You wouldn't have to.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
They DFA Blair Henley Henley, right, like somebody who's still
on the forty man who you could like Sean Duman,
have him come up and give you three four innings
and then go with your low leverage guys out of
the bullpen.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Ret Kuba, Eric Lower. I mean those are guys down there,
because you know, you.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Get any of them on the is Lower on the
forty man to go.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yeah, I mean you'd have to make a move to
do that. But I'm just I'm just thinking out loud
here on if you want to save your arms to
set up your best rotation for that wall, because again,
you gotta mentally prepare for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday to have
your best one, two, three arms there and then you
know we're talking that Saturday ALDS game one. Now here's

(09:40):
a quirk in the schedule. You play ALDS Game one
on that Saturday. Get Sunday is an off day for
the AL Yes, because the NL plays their game, So
you wouldn't play ALDS Game two until Monday the.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Seventh, and then you get another off day. Correct, No, I.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Think it's yeah, yeah, you do, you're right, yeah, Then
they would all be off Tuesday Day the eighth, because
then it's their travel day. Because then you're going you
know wherever. So, yeah, so you got a little bit
of time to prep. But the point is if you do,
you know, hindsight's always twenty twenty. But if you worst
case Sarah had to play three games of a wild
card series, you gotta have your three best arms ready

(10:18):
to go for that Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday, and your
three best arms are I'm gonna say Hunter Brown, I'm
gonna say from Bervaldez, and I'm gonna say you say Kakuchi,
Spencer Getty. I like, but I think he would be
a game four for me right now, and Justin Verlander
right now, the way he's pitching is my number five.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
He's my number six. How about that behind Walker? If
I just just close your eyes and say, on the
mound today for the Astros and a must win playoff game,
Renel Blanco like, okay, on the mound for the today
for the Houston Astros. Justin Verlander, Oh well, don't get
chaut twenty twenty four, Yeah, this is twenty fourteen. May

(11:02):
you feeling a lot better?

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Here's the reality, and Verlander's got to pitch much better here.
He's gonna get a couple more starts before we get
to the playffs. He if he rebounds and he pitches better,
then he's going to get a ball in the in
the postseason. Now, I do think I do think there's
a piggyback conversation. I think they say somebody Land is
going to get the start, but either Arrogetty or Blanco,
you're coming in. First sign of trouble.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
See, but that the first what's the first tign of trouble?
Because with Justin Verlander it's the home runs.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Right.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
You can get one, two guys on and say, okay,
there's not a lot of trouble, but then boom, all
of a sudden, you get exactly and then you're wasting
an Arrogetty. He keeps you in it, but then the
offense doesn't show up and he'll lose the game. Now
you've wasted two of your better pitchers and you know,
and you'll lose a game. So I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
I just talking to some people, Dave said, and we've
heard it publicly, and I do agree. Dana Brown and
Joe spot A have to say publicly that they believe
in Justin Verlander and he's their guy. But the end
of the day, Ross, if he still these last few
starts have been terrible for him. If he pitches bad
again these next couple starts, he's got to know, dude,

(12:07):
we can't give you the ball in a postseason game. Yeah,
the way you're pitching right now, Justin Verlander truck record. Yes,
he's been awesome, But if you cannot prove to us
the next couple of weeks against teams like the Angels
and the Padres, if you can pitchwell against them, I'm
not giving the ball against the Guardians of the Royals
in a walkcard round.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Justin Verlanders many things. I don't think Justin Verlander is stupid.
I think he knows that we're losing a time where
we're running out of time. There the SanDisk is pouring
out of the hourglass and he's only got a few starts.
And the thing is, I say, even if he's like,
let's say he goes out there and gives you like
a six innings a three run ball, I would still

(12:45):
shelve him. I'm gonna need sixty six innings, a shutout ball,
six innings, a one run ball to where he's really
getting some swing and miss. That's something I'm gonna be
looking at we're gonna make sure and it's not even
necessarily how many runs he gives up. How's the command looking,
how's the width percentage looking, how does the stuff look
in the vello? And yes, Dana Brown saying it fifty
times in his interview with Sean Salisbury on Wednesday, he

(13:05):
hit ninety seven. Well, it was ninety six point six.
They round that up to ninety seven, but still that
was also one fastball, And so, yeah, the VLO has
been decent. But he if nobody's swinging and missing at
at his four sem er, if it's coming out flat
and it's going over the fence and it doesn't matter
how fast it's going professional hitters, ninety five ninety six
is not blowing away guys in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Yeah, and you know the reality is, you know, I
just he's gonna make the postseason roster. He's not. They're
not going to leave him off, but he it would
maybe be in a bullpen roll. If he's not starting
a game, do.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
You want him coming out of the pen. He doesn't
have experience doing that. That's why I think Renelle Blanco
is gonna be the first guy bumped out of the rotation.
But because he doesn't have a.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Lot of experience, off your postseason roster.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Maybe off the wildcard roster and then put him on
the Alds roster. Yeah, that ego is so what what's
he gonna do? Stare at you're really hard, stop, stop
on the ground and kick up some dust.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
I think Dana Brown and Joe a spot one.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
I'll tell him Dana Brown and Joe if you need
me to call him, I'll let him know.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
What if Jim Crane overrules the all things and he
hasn't been the Jerry.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
Jones like believe, but I have to believe he would
not get that involved.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
Because the end of the day, he wants to win
a championship. So you gotta do whatever you want to chan.
There's no like loyalty to my guys. It's we're gonna
do whatever's best of the damn team.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
I would imagine, I would imagine that Jim would not
step in. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Well, some other things that have happened here Ross. We've
had some some injuries. We've seen Kyle Tucker come back
from his injury. He has played, He's not been great
at the plate.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
We did a couple of hits in the last game.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
We did hear that he's going to play right field
tonight Friday evening, late night in Los Angeles. So that's good.
We're going to finally get him back in the field
after he's been da these handful of games back. But
we did take a blow Chas McCormick went on the
IL with a hand.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Fracture right when he started hitting.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Now, Brian bogus Sevik we had him on the show
on Thursday and he said, he said, it's a weird
thing because Chaz is talking like he's going to come
back real quick from this. I just think like when
you say hand fracture and they said it's a slight
fracture and a finger that like, this just seems to
me it's going to be at least a couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
Okay, Well I thought it was. I thought I had
read wrist is in the finger now is what they're
going with.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
That was the last I heard, So again, we'll see
on this. I just feel like, when it's mid September
and you're going on the IL for a fracture, I
just feel like, to.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Me, fracture in his right hand, that's what. Well, this
says over here on ESPN, and I thought I'd read wrist. Okay,
if it's finger actually does make me feel better, maybe
he could be back in a couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Yeah, this was Channeler Rome yesterday. Chas McCormick is a
small fracture at the base of his right index finger
at the and it is headed to.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
The I l right, where's the bass? Is the basse
above your thumb or below your thumb?

Speaker 2 (16:07):
I don't think in the in the not in the
wicket of your hand. I think it's the base of
the finger.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
So like here, doesn't the doesn't the bone go all
the way down?

Speaker 2 (16:15):
You're going to metacarpool all the way down?

Speaker 1 (16:18):
X ray of hand is what we have to do
on the podcast.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
I think it's like right here, like you know, you
jam your like above the knuckles.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
So the first knuckle where you make a fist, that's
what I would think, okay, But I mean also, could
the base of the bass could have been weighed down
by closer to your.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Wrist, But then you would say hand not finger, Yeah,
because this is your hand.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Right, So okay, Well, if it's finger, that sounds good,
But again to me, that sounds better.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
To Brian bogus Sevix credit. He's like, when I heard
Chess talk, he talks like he's coming back from this
pretty quick.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Yeah, he said a few weeks that.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
It's almost like, you know, but we only got a
couple of We love.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Chess, but sometimes Chass heads the clouds.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
He's gonna have to be back for that Guardian series.
And this I asked Brian Bogaceviic This, I said, is
there any way you would keep him? Put him on
your postseason roster as a pinch runner slash defensive outfielder
because he catches with his left hand, so he can
play defense all you want. True, But Brian said no,

(17:17):
He's like, you're not going to waste a playoff spot.
He goes, they used to do that. They can't say
Royals did it back in twenty fifteen. He goes, but
they don't do that anymore. If you're gonna put a
guy on your postseason roster, he has to be able
to hit.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
Okay, so we'll see.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
So we'll see, Chaz. We're praying for you.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
Hoshing the best. Right when he started hitting again, yep,
Right when he went on the Mat Tom Show, yep.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
So that was unfortunate. What else Josel Tuvey Wednesday night,
God leaves the game. I forgot about it with the
right side discomfort. He did not play on Thursday. It's
very early on Friday, so we don't We don't know
tonight's lineup yet. But do you think al Tuovey is
back in the Astros lineup tonight?

Speaker 1 (17:56):
I'm I'm gonna say yes, but it gives me pause.
The more the Astros are over the top about how
good someone is doing, it feels like the worse their
injury is Christian I have here. I'm not worried about
him at all.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
I think Tommy John, I think sometimes it's okay for
a spota and dating and then to go.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Yeah, you know, we don't know, we're ye, it's okay, right,
nobody's gonna be panicking. There's not gonna be riots were
honest about what happened.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Astros twitter real panic. But I do think, like if
it does feel, let's just say it's gonna be a
couple of days, don't come out the next that day
and going yeah, yeah, I think he's fine. I think
he's be all right. Well, like then when you miss
four or five days, we all start panicking because we're,
like you said, he was all right.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
Here we go, We'll see, here we go. It's just unfortunately,
you have zero reason to trust the astros and what
they say about injuries. That's just that's just the fact
of the matter at this point right now.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
And the other part of it is the the because
somebody brought up like, oh, yeah, no bleak last year.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
It was the left o bleak last year. This is
the right side. And they said not oblique. I think
a spot A specifically said not his oblique. But what
is whichever that means like he looked, he kind of winced.
I think, is it a hip?

Speaker 2 (19:09):
It's an oblique? I mean much, I mean like a
muscle on your side. It's the oblique. There's nothing really
else there. So and see, I gotta go. We gotta
go back to the medical chart again. Handbones connected to the.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
Upper doors, miss the lateral discimus. I don't know, Well,
we'll see okay.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
On Altuve, but the at least they don't seem like
it's something catastrophic. And and by the way, if the
Askers would have to play a postseason without without Altuve,
you know, let's go ahead and pack it in and
start preparing for spring training.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
What thing on the side is an oblique according to
this unless it's the serratus anterior which is just above that.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
No, I mean it's if you say side your side,
is this your side?

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Is this this whole thing? Is it oblaque?

Speaker 2 (19:57):
That's your side? I mean there's nothing else there, like, oh.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
There it is the latisimus door si I was closed
upper dorsmist.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Does he have a gall bladder injury? I don't know,
like what else is there in there?

Speaker 1 (20:08):
But hopefully it's not the latisimus dorsi or the external oblique.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
Joe Spotted did say a two they had additional imaging
on his right side, said everything looks okay and he
remains day to day. So but they did good news.
They did make a roster move with sending Chaz to
the IL. They did bring up Greg Cassinger and Brian
King was brought up with Nick Carnandez going back down.
They're kind of doing that thing where if they use

(20:33):
the reliever, they're bringing up another one to kind of
just keep keep some fresh arms in the bullpen if
they need it. But as it sets up right now, Ross,
they're gonna go with you, say, Kakucci Friday, Justin Verlanders Saturday,
Ronel Blanco Sunday, so they're back to the six man rotation,
and then San Diego they'll go Arrogatty, Brown Valdez. I

(20:53):
mean we kind of touched on it, but is that
kind of what are you thinking? Let's just say hypothetically
they're hosting the Kansas City Roles in a walkart round.
Who would you go? Game one? Two? And potentially Ki.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Yeah, I be fromber Brown and then probably Kokuchi. I
know the Guardians have a heavy left handed lineup. I
don't know exactly Bobby Witt hits right handed, correct, I
would have to go to the like the literally the
rest of what the matchups are, but still saying it
would be between Kokuchi and Arraghetty probably for me if

(21:26):
you're going through platoon splits and stuff like that, and
what the potential lineup for the Kansas City Royals would be.
So that's that's where I am right now. I trust
both of them over Erlander. I'm sorry, Justin Verlander, you're
one of the all time great You're gonna waltz into
the Hall of Fame. Should be a first ballot guy,
should get one hundred percent of the vote. I don't
know that he will because just because baseball writers are weird,
but I'm sorry, we're gonna see and he's gonna look.

(21:50):
You're gonna get easy matchups. His next scheduled starts for
the rest of the season are against the Angels, and
then the Angels again, and then probably either Seattle or Cleveland,
so he's got three starts left.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
This is as of just a couple of days ago
that as CBS Sports they had the projection. So their
projection as of two days ago was Astros would host
the Twins, so obviously a team you saw in the
postseason last year. And you know, remember with the wald Card,
the home team is the home team. You don't change places.
All three, potentially all three, if you needed three wildcard

(22:27):
games would all be in Houston against the Twins. So
you feel pretty good about the astros chances of winning
two out of three in that. Again, the only problem
is if you go to a third game on that Thursday,
that's Saturday, you're having to play a playoff game. And
I guess in this scenario, the Astros are the three seed.
So what Yankees and Guardians would both get a bye

(22:49):
and so the Astros would what then go to Cleveland,
back to Cleveland where they just finished the season for
an Alds.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
Hmm.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Yeah, if I'm thinking this out right again, this is
thecenario they have the Guardians winning the division over the Royals.

Speaker 1 (23:05):
I mean, anything can happen in three game series, though
they literally just lost the three game series of the Ace.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
You and I were just there last last Alds who
went up to Cleveland or not Cleveland, Minnesota, Minnesota? Yes,
you know, it was a pretty good environment. I remember
going to Cleveland a couple of years ago when they
were the Indians and the Astros supposed to them very quickly.
I mean it was I think I think they only
needed one game up there because they won the first

(23:29):
two at home.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
They so, yeah, four against the Twins.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Correct, Uh No, it wasn't. I'm talking about the Indians
now Guardians. But they went up there, played one game
and one and it was because it was best of five.
So like we had an off day in Cleveland because
we had booked for two days to be there. I
think Michael Brantley was still on the Indians at the time.
But anyway, just bringing that up, because that's potentially where

(23:57):
the Astros could start an Alds this year on the
road if everything holds true. But we'll see how how
those standings will shake out. Any other big topics you
have here with this team heading down the street.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
No, I think, I mean just keeping an eye on
Tucker and Bregman and al Tuve. I mean, those are
three of the guys that you're gonna need at the
top of your order to be successful.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
How you handle the first base.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
Singleton's been hitting a little bit. I think it's Singleton,
and then it's it's a carousel of Caratini and dz
depending on which guy you want catching which pitcher. I
think it's either Carotiny and Diaz's best. If you're in
the playoffs, like we play all these games and whatever
the regular season and you're resting guys and all that
type of stuff. You're in the playoffs, you need Kartini's
bat the way that he's been all year. You need

(24:44):
him in the lineup. You need of course, Diaz is
bad in the lineup, so you're not going to sacrifice
both of them. I think whoever you're more comfortable, you
roll the dice with them. Both of those guys are
not great defensive first basemans, but you get twenty seven outs,
you hope there's enough popouts and enough bouts to where
you only need them getting to the ball a couple
of times a game and coming through for you there.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
And I wondered you could consider maybe and I haven't
done it here, but like it would have been nice
for them to bring up, Saysar Salas are give him
a little bit of a run here, give him some
at bats, because it'd be nice to have that third
catcher an sugar Lands. Yeah, I just uh, I don't know.
I winced when you when you said John Singleton getting

(25:26):
playoff at bats. It's the first basement. But as friends
of mine point out, who cares if Pana and Altive
and yourd on and talk. If those guys are producing whatever,
John Singleton, if he gives you anything, then that's a plus.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
Gives you a couple of walks in a hit or two.
Jake Meyer's same thing.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
It sucks to think that way, but like that's kind
of where we are at the bottom of the earth.

Speaker 1 (25:46):
The formula for the twenty twenty four Astros winning the
World Series is going to be dominant starting pitching and
dominant bullpen play in just enough runs. That's how they
won it in twenty twenty two.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
And hey, Jeremy Pania, good defense too, if we could
maybe clean it up a little.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
Like combine no hitters in Philly, and that's that's how
they won in twenty twenty two.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
But they they've always been great defensively. Well, I don't
know what the hell's been happening here. It's last month.

Speaker 1 (26:08):
I think you've seen some level for whatever reason. Jeremy
Panya is just in the Malays. Maybe the day of
the days off here before the playoffs here here and
there will help him out.

Speaker 2 (26:16):
But I got Fromber balls coming to him, and him
lacks the days.

Speaker 1 (26:19):
I mean now two V's thirty four years old. He
doesn't have the range that he did a decade ago.
You're not great at first base, yeah, you have Fromber
has issues. Hector Narris is having issues with bunts for
the most part. Jake Myers, Marius U, Dubond, Well, Chas
McCormick is fractured now. But Kyle Tucker, you're gonna be
pretty good in the outfield. But yeah, they're infield questions.
And then when the not the cornerstone, because he's not

(26:41):
on a corner, but the cornerstone of infield defense. Your
short stop is creating a bunch of easy errors, then yeah,
it's not looking good and you don't have you got
first base issues too, So two of the four infield spots,
and I would even put Al two bay in there.
I don't know what his advanced metrics are at second base.
I imagine they're not great. And that's three out of four.
Bregman has been spectacular. But also now he's got this

(27:03):
elbow thing, So okay, how's his arm?

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Which you trust more? L two day's defense or Al
two days base running his defense? That's rough. I did
want to give a hat tip to fromber Valdez. This man.
This is a guy that was a whipping boy of
this team last postseason. Let's be really, he was not good.
But this dude has been awesome this year. He deserved
his fifteenth win on Thursday, Ryan Presley gave up a

(27:26):
game tying home run, so it took the w out
of Fromber's column. The Astros won the game, but he
didn't get the win. But fourteen and six on the year,
a two ninety one ross. This is his second best year.
A couple of years ago he had his career best year.
This is his second best career year. And this comes
with going into a contract year next year and wanting

(27:49):
a new contract from the Astros. And oh, by the way,
Javier got paid, he won't be back till mindow next year.
Mccullor's got paid. He hadn't pitched in two years. Frobers gone,
I'm your most damn durable pitcher. Justin Erland was free
agent this offseason. Like pay the man. Frober's gone. Forget
Kyle Tucker, pay me. I just gave you one of

(28:10):
my best seasons ever. Yeah, it's just gonna be very
interesting to see how they approach this. But Fromber, as
much as you want to give credit to Runo, you
know how many times you say, I don't know where
this team would be without runout Blanca, I don't know
where they could carry them. They did not have Robert
Valdez carried. Then, yeah, from the middle to the back
of the season.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
Blanco carried early season, and then Fromer has definitely been
the horse in the middle to the latest season. By
the way, I pulled up a fielding bible does a
defensive run saved second baseman. There's one hundred and seventy
nine of them in baseball who had been rated at
second base Josel two as one hundred and seventy nine.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
Not great. But to Frober since July first.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
Oh no, this from last year, why does it bring
him twenty twenty three? That's still not good?

Speaker 2 (28:55):
Well, yeah, that's that's awful. Well, he missed the first
part of last.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
Season, that's true, so it would have been worse.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
But since since July first, Fronber's really only had one
bad outing, and that one bad outing was four runs
against the Pirates, a game he got the win in.
So that just kind of tell it like, Frober has
been awesome. You know, I had somebody ask the other
you feel good about Givden Fromber the ball to postseason game. Yes,
I have to because he good.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Absolutely, he's been throwing right now.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
Can he go out there and melt down? Sure it
could happen, but I mean we've seen meltdowns from I
don't know you justin Verlanders melted down, Clayton Kershaw and
down the list of Garrett Cole, whoever else.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
A Hunter Brown's been pretty solid, you know, down the
from the middle to the back stretch of the season.
Eric Getty's had one or two hiccups here there, But
I still kind of like him. But how about you
say Kakuchi. I mean he goes tonight. The Astros have
won every game he has started now right now, since
he put on an Astro's uniform, he's been great.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
AL two B by the way, I pulled it up
for twenty twenty four, worse are better because he's again
the worst second basement in total runs save minus eleven
ty with glabortares.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Wow, well, just keep hitting, just keep bat around three
hundred call clutch postseason hits. That's that's all we need.

Speaker 1 (30:12):
That's all we need.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
Yeah, seven straight starts in an Astros uniform for you,
say Kakuci. By the way, too, did you see the
Julia Morales video She does his little videos interview in
the players.

Speaker 1 (30:22):
Didn't catch it.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
She did one asking them their their favorite their go
to coffee orders.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Oh okay.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Towards the end she interviews you say, Cocucci perfect English.
Let's go Wait a minute, why are we doing the
whole translator? This guy speaks it again. It's it's just
over this. He doesn't want to get a conversated right.

Speaker 1 (30:39):
It's easier.

Speaker 2 (30:40):
It just shocked me.

Speaker 1 (30:41):
I want wait a minute, to not make shock waves
with a coffee order. Then why did you know you
get misquoted? Or you might want to just make sure
you don't say the wrong thing that'll get taken out
of context because we in the media love to run
with it. Social media loves to run with any sort
of little thing and jump on it like that, what
was that? Who is that picture? That was talking about
they he had quit on the team, and then there

(31:02):
was a whole controversy. He was talking about how he
got misquoted and all this other stuff or yeah he misspoke.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Well, I just Froberts had a couple of those moments too,
where he said he has said something that I think
I lost in translation. But it was just funny because
when they got Kakucha, I remember somebody asking, oh, is
he going to have, you know, communication issues with the catchers. No,
they all speak English. They're fine. They might use translators
talk to the media, but they.

Speaker 1 (31:25):
Could call it kitchen Spanish or something like yeah.

Speaker 2 (31:27):
Right, fastball up, bro, Like you know, they can communicate that.
So the most important things. But the most important thing
for the Astros is what are we down to? Russ
at six plus four? That's ten sixteen games remaining, sixteen
games remaining. You want to make a prediction? Eight and eight? Oh,
come on better than that?

Speaker 1 (31:47):
Sixteen? Okay? Seven against the Angels, eight.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
And a would get them the eighty six wins, ten
and six, ten and six would get them to I'm sorry, yeah,
that would get them the eighty eight.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
Wins, ten and six, ten and six.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Can we go twelve and four?

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Probably not get the ninety probably not.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
I mean they win total on the season was definitely
had to be at least ninety ninety five somewhere in there,
so they won't hit that. But yeah, very interesting. Also
one other cork, did you see next Tuesday's game in
San Diego? Is a true TV game?

Speaker 1 (32:21):
Why?

Speaker 2 (32:22):
I don't know, not even TV.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
Yeah, they be true TV, Yes games. I didn't know
they're doing True TV. Take the impractical joker.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
I was gonna say, take it off my impractical jokers
on the call. I believe that would be.

Speaker 1 (32:35):
They're gonna be telling Kokuchi, all right, curveball.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
He forced Whitley, go go out there, throw a thirty
fist pitch.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
Hey man, throw your throw it to your left hand.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
What what is? I haven't even paid attention to the
n all standing so the Padres eighty two and sixty
five but third in the NL West behind the Diamondbacks
and Dodgers.

Speaker 1 (32:55):
Set division's brutal yep, all praise be to the American
League West and the ineptitude of the Mariners and the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (33:01):
The Giants are like, they're a decent roster if you
look at their team.

Speaker 1 (33:06):
League, No, would they be third wild card?

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Let's see astro seventy eight and sixty eight. Yeah, I
mean that would put them right behind the Braves.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
They'd be out of the playoffs. In the OS, they'd
be out of the playoffs too, right behind the Royals Orioles.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
In the Al Central.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Yeah, all praise, look, just get in healthy. Well happen.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
They're right there with the Twins. Okay for the third
walk car Yeah. Oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:34):
The Red Sox fell off hard.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
Huh.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
That's a shame.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
Yeah. Yeah, they've lost six of their last ten, so
oh well, sucks for them. Watch now they're gonna go.
We need to go overpay Alex Bragman.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
Well, that's what Ken Rosenthal said, Yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
Think we're I think Boston or your Arizona's where Alex
Bragman will be suiting up next year, and well the Astros.

Speaker 1 (33:55):
Going, I guess they'll put Devers at first. That's what
Rosenthal was saying his article. I asked Adam Devor's locked
up for a big money for a long time too.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
Asked Adam Wexler, who is the Astros opening day first
baseman next year? And he said, I don't know who
it is, but he's on the roster. Hm. I was like, oof,
it's the third basement on the roster. Two that's gonna
be rough bunch of Shay Whitcomb and Zach Dezenzo starts.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
It's your last years of Fromber and Tucker. You got
to spend a little money and run it back and
try to go for this. This might be the start
the documentary, roll roll the.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
Tape, last dance. I'm just thinking like a Justin the
thirty five Justin Turner, like some kind of rental that
we could put at first or third for a year and.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
If you don't trade them in the off season, it'll
be last season of Frombert, last season A Tucker I'll
till be thirty five years old. Bregman will be gone.
Like we're in last dance territory.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
I think it's Joe spot of Phil Jackson. Yes, he
doesn't won a championship yet. Man, they've changed out for one,
They've changed out, changed out gms multiple times, They've changed
out manager multiple times. I mean, just keep on. Crane
just knows a little something. It's all too bag guy.
He just keeps going.

Speaker 1 (35:05):
You had your do on. Guy's pretty good too.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
All right, Well, we will be at the ballpark the
next couple of weeks, rounding this thing out. Uh, getting
you guys ready for playoff baseball. On Sports Talk seven night,
you see the big news of the day to the
Texans announced open roof for their Sunday night football game
on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (35:21):
Telling Roger Goodell made a call.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
Chandler Rome tweeted immediately, Oh no, no, we'll think you
can't open the roof over there? Mini made there was
that game? Was that a week ago when it got
the tempts got done about seventy Yeah, okay, it was
a perfect night to open it, but they did not.
But nonetheless, we'll be over at the ballpark hopefully you
guys were there and joined some high school Crawford bock
from our friends at car Bock Brewing. It's a home

(35:43):
run every time with the Crawford bock. We were at
the game on Thursday, had a Crawford bock up there
in the Gallagher Club, had one down in the seats
and goes perfectly with Astros baseball. So hopefully you guys
all as we get into deeper football season and then
into the Astros postseason, which fingers crossed they're back in
the postseason again, that you guys will be enjoying ice
cold Crawford buk whether you're at Mini Made Park or

(36:05):
at home watching the Astros, make sure you're doing that.
I'm Chris Gordy. Here's Ross Verial. You guys, have a
great day. We'll talk you next week right here on
the Crawford Box. CAS presented by Carbuck Burwing
