Speaker 1 (00:09):
Astros fans, cheers.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Wacky Lucky, Welcome to the Crawford box Casts. Crowd leapord
for you by Crawford Bach from Carbak Brewing.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
You're getting that bear.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Oh my goodness, the Crawford box Cast starts now here
we go.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Here's Chris Gordy and Ross via Real.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
This is an all new edition of the Crawford box Cast,
presented by Carboch Brewing and of course the Astro season
right around the corner. You should start thinking about stucking
up on point at Crawford Bach as you get ready
for yet another Astro season.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
As we always tell you, it's a home run every time.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
With the Crawford from Carbak Brewing and Chris Gordy here
joined by Ross via Reel and Ross, there's been a
lot happening. We just had a very successful Astros fan
fest over the weekend. We'll bring you some of our
interviews we had from that, but I wanted to start
here because we did start to get some tidbits of
news out from over the weekend, and we had a
(01:11):
trade go down with the Astros and much much more.
But let's start with the latest on Alex Brugman, because
the news kind of came out.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
He's still a.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Free agent as of this recording, and the news start
to come out that the Astros may not be completely
done with Alex Bregman. The sooner he continues on as
a free agent. The possibility remains, maybe they could come
back with a counteroffer, or maybe Brugman says, Hey, that
offer that was on the table, I'll take that. Whatever
the case is. The door is not completely closed. That's
(01:41):
only slightly open, but the door's not completely closed. What
did you make of that whole story?
Speaker 6 (01:45):
I'm starting to try to figure this out, because if
you look at the reporter side, from Ken Rosenthal, from others,
the talk is that the Astros are definitely interesting, that
they're definitely open to having Alex Bregman come back. But
then when you hear Dana Brown's comments over the weekend
(02:07):
saying I wouldn't say the door is open, but it's cracked,
and saying that they haven't re engaged with Scott Boris,
and then his comments today following the trade becoming official,
also saying he's got a text from Scott Boris and
he owes him a call and he hasn't called back.
That to me makes me think that the things are
cool on the Astro side and that a lot of
(02:29):
these reporters, of course they do the bidding of agents.
They and I'm trying to say, you know, this is
exactly what's happening. This's just me just trying to figure
this out, because it feels like we're getting two different stories.
Feels like on the reporter side, they're saying this could happen,
and it seems like on the Astro side and what
Dana Brown is saying that this isn't going to happen,
and this isn't necessarily something that is going to be
(02:50):
feasible for the Astros and putting Altuve in left field
and the Astros shedding Ryan Presley because they want to
get under a certain tax threshold and have a little
bit of breathing room. That doesn't make any sense to
do that and then sign Alex Bregman to a huge deal.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
So if I'm just putting.
Speaker 6 (03:10):
Reading the tea leaves as it were, and trying to
put the puzzle pieces together, it feels like this is
more on the Bregman Boris side than there is interest
on the Astros side, with Dana Brown saying that he
hasn't even re engaged with Scott Boris. There's only been
internal discussions about adding Alex Bregman back.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Yeah, and read between the lines, right. They acquired Esak Parres,
who they really liked, will try to get the trade
deadline last year. They get him in the Kyle Tucker
trade and he's an infielder. And then on top of it,
they go and sign Christian Walker, you know, big time
heavy hitting first baseman. Well, those are your two infielders
now to go with Jeremy Pania and jose Al Tuvy.
(03:49):
And so it's like, all right, riting's on the wall.
They're out on Bregman. But then this story starts to
emerge that they may look at jose Al Tuvey in
the outfield and giving him some looks. And I think
we all kind of laughed at it. In fact, you
made jokes about it all down fan Fest.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
And then here on Tuesday this week, we hear Dana
Brown say in a media session that, yeah, that it
is a legitimate thing that they're going to give jose
Al Twove a look in left field. It sounds like
probably during spring training and even when as far to
say as he could split time between second base and
left field, and I think part of that ross this
(04:24):
may not even have anything to do with I mean,
sure it's connected to Bregman if they were to bring
him back, But even if they don't bring Bregman back,
I think this is a bigger topic. What did we
talk about a lot here on the Crawford box cast
towards ends the last year, how two vase defense is
not what.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
It once was.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
So if you can get a better defensive second basement
in there, you need to start kind of looking at that,
and you want to keep al two v's back in
the lineup. But yeah, playing left field at minute May Park,
I mean, go down Alvarez showed. It's not to say
anybody could play left field, but with the high wall
al twove, it's just all about playing off the bounce.
It doesn't You don't have to be super tall to
(05:00):
play left field. Ave been at May Park, So, uh,
this seems like this is a real legitimate thing.
Speaker 6 (05:05):
Now, Yeah, and maybe it is a situation that his
his de Look, if you look at outs above average,
you look at fielding, viable, other metrics and stuff like that,
it is what it is.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
He's not what he once was.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
Defensively, he is a formal gold glover, but the last
two years he's really slowed down. The range isn't there,
the arm isn't what it once was, and so if
you are looking to put him at a lesser of
a premium defensive position, it does make sense. And like
you said, does that necessarily mean Alex Bregman is coming.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
Horrihei Plonko has been mentioned as as a possible option
for the Astros, and Horia Planco has only played second,
third and shortstop his entire major league career. You wouldn't
put Jeremy Paynia out there because of how premium of
a glove he is at shortstop if Bregman came back.
So no matter who it's gonna be, it's gonna be
Jeremy Payne as your shortstop, probably Esach Parade as your
(05:56):
third basement, and then maybe there is going to be
some mixing in of other guys unless.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
You bring back Brekman and then Bregman goes back to third.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
And like I said, last year, when the hater stuff
was floated, I was like, maybe this is agent driven
because Jim Crane doesn't want to go over the tax
I was dead wrong. They signed Josh Hater, they went
over the tax credit to Jim Crane. He ponied up
and put up the cash and went into the luxury
tax to try to win. I just don't see it
(06:25):
happening again. But again I've been wrong before, so we'll
see what happens. But if you had to have me guess,
it just feels like a long shot. I would still
be very surprised if the Astros signed back Alex Bregman.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
Well, and they were getting close up against the second
Luxury Tax, and there was talk of they were wanting
to get under the first luxury tax, and it was
floated out there a few months ago that look, they
may dump Ryan Presley and try to get rid of him,
and we finally saw that come to fruition this past week.
They officially trade Ryan Presley to the Chicago Cubs. They
get was it Wan Bello, the twenty year old prospect
(06:58):
to Dana Brown's bayl They envisioned him as a future starter,
you know, so that's the kid that you get into
your system and you start to develop.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
But it just felt ross.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
The magic had kind of worn out, and when they
brought in Josh Hader, and look, I think it was
a great movie. Would when the best closer in baseball
is available to go get, you go get him, and
you pay him a pretty penny. But it just it
sucked for Presley because he had been effective. He was
a former setup man that came here, that took on
the role of closer after the Roberto Sooner stuff went
(07:30):
down and really owned it and was part of the
twenty two World Series, was part of several other multiple
postseason runs, and was as nails as you get as
a postseason closer. I mean, he racked up a ton
of great stats in postseason. But last year's season r
us the regular season. It was very up and down
as he went back to that setup role, and my gosh,
(07:51):
how many times did it feel like every time he
came in he would give up a leadoff double or
a leadoff hit. And he was having a work out
of trouble constantly. So this might just be a better
reset to say, Look, Brian A. Brady was the guy
who's ready to slide into the eighth inning role. Yeah,
let's move Ryan Presley. But it is the end of
a little bit of an error there of one of
a very beloved player here who came out to Johnny
(08:12):
Cash every time.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
Appreciate Ryan Presley what he brought to the table, and
that at the level of excellence he did, as you mentioned,
especially in the postseason, recorded the final out of that
twenty twenty two World Series. Was a big part of
what the Astros did. But also there was slippage in
his game in the last couple of years. I mean
basically every metric and number that you look at, as
far as WIF percentage and walk percentage and hard hit contact,
(08:36):
all that type of stuff, it went.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Up for him.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
But he did maybe perhaps have some bad luck when
it comes to batting average balls and play, but that
number goes up when you're giving up more hard hit contact.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
That's natural.
Speaker 6 (08:46):
So appreciate Ryan Presley and he's going to be thirty
six this upcoming year.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
But it was time to move on. He hadn't been
worth the salary.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
Clearly the Cubs didn't think he was worth the salary
because the Astros had to cover up some of that
as well.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
But you will gone, but not forgotten. You will be missed.
We appreciate you, Ryan Presley, but it was time to
move on.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, and so now you kind of look at the
astros and you know, is there another bat to be added?
Is there another something to be added? And Dana Brown
saying on Tuesday morning that he said a left handed
bat is quote sort of a priority that they are
looking at a bat. And I've seen multiple people saying
maybe Ryan Verdugo. You know that there's there's bits some
(09:29):
names floated out there on potential bats. But I thought
that was pretty uh, that was pretty telling that Dana
Branlex alex Dale. Yeah, sorry, I thought that was pretty
telling that they still want to add another another bat here,
because let's be real, the outfield is, you know, to
have to lean on Jake Myers or Chas McCormick. Now,
(09:50):
I mean they were one at one type plawtooning. Now
you got to lean on both of them as full
time starters. It's it's a big ask.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
Yeah, especially depending on how ready you think are organization thinks.
Jacob Melton is they've obviously been very aggressive in promoting
guys and getting up in the major level level and going, hey,
this guy's either going to sink or swim.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
Let's see what he's got.
Speaker 6 (10:09):
So that could be happening at some point early on
in the season with Jacob Melton. But as of what
you have right now, they need some help. They need
to sign somebody or do something. This team just says
it is can win the American League West. But if
you're have the lofty expectations of winning the World Series,
which they have had over the last several years, you
got to get better.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
And by the way, the Astros and their their farm
system when we talk about playoff rank or prospect rankings,
MLB put out their top one hundred of prospect rankings
this past week, and the Astros had one player in
a top one hundred and it was Cam Smith, who
they acquired in the Kyle Tucker trade. You know, there
was for much of last season and the Astros did
(10:51):
not even have a top one hundred prospect. And so that,
you know, tells you where this farm system kind of is.
And as high as you are on certain aren't certain guys.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
It's just let's be real, it's they're not what the
rest of Major League Baseball things. And it's not to
say you know that they could be wrong. I mean,
you know, Spencer Araghetti got here and is showing he's
a big time player, and some of these other guys
that they've brought up have proven Okay, I can be
the guy, but it is you know, it is something
to keep an eye on it. To your point, Yeah,
(11:21):
Jacob Melton is one. If he gets to spring and
starts popping, and maybe that solves the problem right there,
and you go, okay, well great, we can just lean
lean on him. But just a few other notes that
came out from over the weekend at FanFest. We did
see that, and this is one of the first things
I saw pop up on social media right at the
start of fan Fest as we were doing it. Data
(11:44):
Brown reveals that Luis Garcia and Lance mccullors Junior will
both not be ready for opening Day. I'd spent much
of this offseason saying, well, it sounds like they're both
on track. I mean, at least sounds like mccollor's, who
hadn't pitched a ball since the twenty two Worlds.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
Hey, he's been throwing balls. He said, he's putting them
on Ig. Looks like the stuff looks good on IG.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
But you know what I mean, Like I just thought,
and this is what Dana Brown said. He said, they
will not be ready for opening day, but both are
throwing and looking good. He hinted both pitchers could be
ready shortly after the season begins, and then we came
to find out Luis Garcia said he had some elbow
tightness during his recovery in September, so the Asters shut
(12:26):
him down for six weeks. He's back throwing, says he
feels great, but he's not, you know, he's like he's
a little bit behind.
Speaker 5 (12:31):
Now, that's okay.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
He don't rush.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Anybody, right, So that's that's where we are. But again,
just for poor Lance, his name has become a punchline
in Houston, and the longer he goes without putting on
Astro's uniform and throwing a pitch, it will continue to.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
Be a punchline.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
Well, he knows that more than anybody. He wants to
be out there more than anybody. I think he gets
a bad rap from the fans who are like, oh man,
he's making all this money, he's hurt. He doesn't want
to be hurt. His body is failing him unfortunately, and
he's gone through all these injuries and trials and tribulations.
He's got that want to He's as fiery as it
gets out there on the mound. He loves this organization
and this team and its fan base, and he wants
(13:09):
to be out there to perform. So I welcome him
with open arms if and when he can ever get
back and get ready, and hoping he doesn't suffer any
more setbacks like he has a couple of times throughout
this recovery, and wishing him the best.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
And if they're saying that.
Speaker 6 (13:23):
He's not gonna be ready for opening Day but hopefully
shortly thereafter, at this point we have kind of no
choice to take them at their word, even though we
know it's been kind of dodgy with the Astros that
it pertains to injuries over the years.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
Yeah, so I don't know. This will be an interesting
spring training to see.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Okay, we're just gonna assume Bruno Blanco is going to
pick up where he left off last year. We're gonna
assume from Bervaldeesk gets back to old fromber. You know,
looking you can Hunter Brown and Spitzerghetti look more like
they did down the back stretch last season as opposed
to the front part of last season. So these are
all things we're hoping for.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
And then oh, by the way. Christian Javier will be
along at some point as well, so you know.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Was Nisky in the starting rotation.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Yeah, yeah, he's part of that Kyle Tucker trade. He
will certainly be in the mixed. JP France is on
his rehab track as well, so you know, look, if
they do suddenly finally get healthy, you have a surplus
of arms, and that's gonna be a good thing to have.
The hope is just that the offense can can pick
up in the absence of an Alex Bregman, in the
(14:24):
absence of a Kyle Tucker. Hey, Jordan, we'd love to
see you get some pop going again and doing.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Your thirty five home runs. Not bad, that's little pop.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Yeah, I just there was there were just so many
clutch moments down the stretch of last season and in
those two playoff games where we just saw bad from bad.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Jord On and I was like, hopefully he's just hurt.
Hopefully some.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Why he wasn't why he wasn't his old self. But nonetheless,
this will be a fun spring training ross to get
down there and kind of see who the names are,
right because last spring training, you know, I remember Taylor
Scott was not in name that came up, and Taylor
Scott ended up becoming a big part of this bullpen
as the season went along, and a guy you relied on,
(15:06):
you know, and Caleb Ord came out of nowhere and
kind of okay, you know, it's a nice, nice arm
to have, you know, just who's going to be that
guy is going to be fun to see. And then
the relationship with those pictures with you know, Victor Karattini
and jian Ar Diez And yeah, it hasn't really been
brought up again, but there was that buzz of, well,
yan are Diaz play less behind the plate this year?
(15:28):
You know, because you really saw it took a toll
on him as the season went along, not necessarily behind
the plate, but his offense started to drop off. It
felt like because he was playing so many games behind
the point.
Speaker 6 (15:37):
It felt like there was a time he had that
mid season resurgence. It was after like a few days off. So, yeah,
that'll be something to keep an eye on. And you know,
we've talked about that. They played him a little bit
at first base, really didn't like his defense. Maybe with
an offseason he can play a little bit better there
and be an option. Even though Christian Walker is going
to be locking it down over there now that they
have him. But maybe some more DH days, whatever it's
going to be for you on ARDEAZ and maybe get
(15:59):
him off his legs, get him a little bit fresh
ready to go, because you value his bat probably more.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Than you do him behind the plate.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
This is the Crawford Box Cast presented by Carbock Brewing
and the Crawford back again. Hopefully you guys are loading
up on the Crawford Bock getting ready for another astro season.
Of course, you get out on over to Carbock Brewing
if you haven't been there a while, go check out
the great outside areas that they have there in the
beer garden. Of Course, weather starting to get a little
bit more tolerable now as we get back into the
(16:28):
sixties and even seventy some days now if the snow
has subsided. So get on out there to Carbock, enjoy
yourself at Crawford Bock and get ready for Astro season
and listen to all the games right here on Sports
Talk seven ninety. All right, Ross, as we start to
wrap things up, I did want to bring two interviews
that I think we're really entertaining from the weekend and
(16:48):
two newcomers that the Astros have brought to the team.
One you mentioned already Hayden Wiznski, who I think is
going to be relied on to be a reliable starter
throughout this season. He's also a guy who can move
to the bullpen and be a long reliever if and
he'd be. But I thought his interview was really good.
And I also enjoyed Taylor Tremmell, who's gonna be competing
(17:08):
for the outfield spot and a guy that I thought
was really really good. So, without further ado, here were
our interviews with Hayden was Nesky and Taylor Tremmell from
Astro's FanFest and.
Speaker 7 (17:21):
Joined out by Estonian Hayden.
Speaker 8 (17:26):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
We just had Dana Brown here on with us, and
that's what he said. Is one of the first things
he said to you upon the acquisition was welcome home.
It must have been a great feeling.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Oh man, it was so cool. Yeah, he calls me
and I can hear he's trying to make moves and
he seems like he's he's end up talking. He's really
really talking, really really fast, And man, it was so
cool when I got the call and you have no
idea how happy me and my family are to be
back called. But no, it was really cool to talk
to him, and he just seemed like he had some
(17:56):
other things he was trying to make happen in the background,
So I was trying to have a quick conversation on
be like, hey, it's really nice to meet you. Understand,
I'll meet you in person and we'll go from there.
Speaker 8 (18:04):
Phones on the golf course are usually frowned upon, but
then you know it's one of those you see the
number comes across, I'm assuming you don't have it saved?
Uh did did the did the group you were with
that They kind of say, hey, we understand, and and
what hole.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Were you on when you got the news?
Speaker 1 (18:19):
So he'd if I remember correctly, Dana doesn't have a
Houston phone number. So I'm like, I'm assuming I'm answering
every call I have right, right, and if it's somebody,
if it's a spam call to a spam call, will play,
we'll get it away, right. But I was on whole two.
I was with my my fiance and my my father,
my fiance's family, so my my brother in law, father
(18:41):
in law, my golf game got better. I don't know
what happened, how that happens, but I was with the
her older brother and he's like, man, I understand, I
get it. I'm calling. I'm on like whole two, I've
gotten two calls, are ready before the whole ended, and
by the turn, I'm I've I've answered seven phone calls.
Dana Brown calls me at the turn to perfect timing.
(19:03):
I was skipping shots. I was like, I just pick
my ball up and keep going. You know, man, it
was just a lot going on, but my golf game
did get better on the back the night when I
stopped getting calls, it took took a bad turn.
Speaker 8 (19:14):
So hopefully if you guys had the Bluetooth speaker on
the cart, that you weren't the one that was hooked
up to it, so then it would continue to skip
the playlist.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Oh no, no, yeah, to be honest with you, if
if it's my family, it's a little different, I'll take
the bluetooth. But it wasn't my family or it not
my side of the family, so I was letting them
do their thing. But no, of course, yeah, once you
get the first phone calls, I get I'm done. And
I also kind of had some hint. There were some
people telling him, telling me that might happen. So I
was like, Okay, I gotta keep my phone close and
definitely can't connect to the bluetooth.
Speaker 8 (19:42):
Following you a little bit on social media, it seems
like there's a lot of Texans content from you. So
is that kind of your release in the off season
of watch some football, you know, try to try to
pull them through.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
I'm sure last week was agonizing for you.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
I thought we played a good game last week. I
was I, you know the rest. You know that's not
a joke. But no, I love football, man, I love
fantasy football. I'm I'm a big NFL guy. I don't
know how a big college guy with Sam Houston a
cheer for them, but my fiance with a tech cheer
for them. Right, But uh, I'm in like six fantasy leagues.
(20:17):
I love the dude. I love NFL football. I love
the Texans in particular, right, I think they're I don't know,
it's happy to have a good team. It's nice to
have a good football Team's your four kind of thing.
Speaker 9 (20:26):
Ross.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
I think we have a recruit for number seven. Oh,
let's go, somebody might drop out of our league. We'll
let you know. I don't know if I can.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
I don't know if I can go for seven?
Speaker 3 (20:34):
How many playoffs in the six leagues?
Speaker 4 (20:36):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (20:36):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Only only two in the Cubs League. In the Cubs League,
I loll. I came in seventh, so I missed the
playoffs by one. And then I'm in a couple like,
I don't know if you'll know where dynasty leagues are?
Speaker 6 (20:46):
Yeah, yeah, Oh, if you're serious.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
I've tanked you leagues. So that was that was the
two of the leagues, right.
Speaker 7 (20:53):
So I did happen to bring up, for a totally
different reason, the name Jack Peterson in our last second,
as that relates to fantasy football. What was it like?
Just you got the Cubs league? What's the Cubs league?
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Like?
Speaker 7 (21:05):
What's your future Astros league likely going to be?
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Like? Oh man, I did not like my team this year.
So I made a lot of moves a lot really fast.
I drafted one guy that I kept, So I was shuffling.
I was really I was struggling the year before I
came in second. But the Cubs, the Cubs really liked
the fantasy So Justine Steele, huge fantasy guy. We had
(21:28):
two leagues. So we had the Big Boy League and
then I was in the small Boy league.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
So we did that.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
It was a good time.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
But I don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
I'm excited I met I met Taylor Scott today. He's
from South Africa. I don't know if he likes fantasy football.
So I'm trying.
Speaker 10 (21:43):
I don't know who how big it's league that might
be going away. We still have the commission come back,
so I left.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
That means you're lockdown on what might be happening this offseason.
How do you kind of go through an off season
now that you're here. What's bubbled up again in the
last several days. What's your thought on the idea of
you're already loving playing for the Astros, how competitive it'll
be your hometown team, but you might be able to
continue playing with Alex Bregman over there at third base.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
Man, he's everything you asked for, right and he's such
as he's a great representation of Houston. He's a winner
and man, he still loves him. I would love to
have him back to you kidding me especially, I know
I have the pulse of this place, and you see
how many at Bregman jerseys are around here. Everybody loves
him and they want him to come back. We'll see
what happens that. There's just a lot of pieces that
(22:35):
have to happen, right. I don't know what they're gonna do,
but I'm just glad it's even the talk. Right at first,
it was like it's not happening, there's no way. And
now we're getting close to the spring training and you never.
Speaker 9 (22:45):
Know, never know.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
So now you're here, you are an Astro.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
There's been a lot of talk with what the Astros
organization does with pitchers.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
I don't know how much conversation you've.
Speaker 6 (22:55):
Had necessarily with the pitching coaches or the staff that way,
but from an outside of you, with the Cubs looking
at the Astros and what they do with pitchers and
now being here, what's it been left for you?
Speaker 8 (23:04):
Man?
Speaker 1 (23:05):
We've had conversations already. I've been here filled with some
bullpens up here. Talk to Bill and Josh and dude.
They obviously they know what they're doing, right, that's not
a question. It was just like, what is what do
they know that the others teams don't know? And so
there's a few things that in particular that pitch selections big,
a big one, and then we're gonna work on some
(23:25):
other things and tinkering, and then we made a new pitch.
I don't know what's gonna happen. Yeah, I see, Yeah,
we'll see. We'll see how it goes. I'm not gonna
get too much hopes if they threw it out there and.
Speaker 7 (23:34):
It's like, we'll see what we we we.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
May bang that pit for it happens, right, So now
I've had conversations, good conversations with them. The biggest thing
was just there's like small details against lefties that we're
gonna try to fix and hopefully the change up will
come back and we'll use it more often. But the
biggest thing was like pitch selection and how to attack guys.
Speaker 7 (23:55):
Pre existing relationships with guys here in Houston. We talked
to Spencer a little bit of guy I want if
your time here growing up in Houston pass ever across
he's had eventually were both DST guys trained there, and
so he's gotten to know you a little bit through
watching your work there. But you know, were there any
pre existing relationships with the group you're you're gonna be
working with this year and what have you gotten to
know about some of your new teammates.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
There's a few guys like I know, I've met Forrest
Whitley beforehand, years before. Right, Uh, hit or miss kind
of thing.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Nick Hernandez is he's with my agency. I've known him
for a while. And there's a few other guys that
are in my agency that I've met but not really
talk to, like Javier a little bit like I'm introduced
myself kind of thing, but nothing crazy. You have to
understand that, like just because they're from Houston they played
for the Astros doesn't mean and I'm from Houston doesn't
mean to meet them, right. It's a weird. It's such
a weird thing because, like you know, most of these
(24:46):
guys aren't from Houston, and so it's a weird thing that,
you know, are.
Speaker 7 (24:50):
You trying to say January of last year, you weren't
here at fan Pest.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
No, I was talking to my parents. They're they're obviously
they're not good parents. I never came to Fan Pest
when I was like, man, no, but yeah, it's I'm
excited to meet a bunch of guys again. I've only
met a handful of people. That's gonna change very very
shortly by the end of free training. I hope to
know where everybody's from and get to know them pretty well. Right,
(25:15):
It's this the name of the game when it comes
to knowing your teammates.
Speaker 8 (25:19):
I hear that this is a really well respected clubhouse,
even outside of the clubhouse around baseball. When you go
through a course of one sixty two plus because I
throw the plus in there, because they've played more than
one hundred and sixty two in a season.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
How important is that? Like, like how nice is that?
Speaker 8 (25:34):
And reassuring is that to know that you walk into
a group that it seems like it's a pretty loose
room in there.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
Man, the Astros, it's expected over one hundred and sixty
two at this point, right, So you can just tell. Right.
So last year, for instance, we they came to Chicago
and I pitched against them. They're struggling, and I thinking,
thank god they were struggling at the time, and think,
you know, I was like, now I'll take I don't
want to face some of the rolling kind of thing. So,
but yeah, you knew they were gonna turn it around.
(26:01):
You knew the ash was gonna turn around at some point.
And it's not because of lack of talent or anything.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
You know that.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
It's like, oh, man, guys getting old. No, they're gonna
turn it around because they're good people. They know what
they have to do. They're not freaking out. Everyone on
the outside is gonna freak out. But you know that
today we have to win a game. And that's the
reason why they've consistently won here. I think it's not
because of I mean, the talent's there, but that's talents everywhere.
And you wonder why certain teams win and other teams don't.
It's because of the clubhouse, and so that matters a lot.
(26:27):
In one hundred and sixty two, like football, there's seventeen weeks.
You're at home all the time. You can kind of
move around, and you don't see your teammates. I'm with
it with them every day, so it's a big deal.
If I don't like you and it wears on you,
of course you're gonna get an arguments your brothers, right,
So it's gonna happen. But you spend two hundred days
together in a row, and I see them more than
(26:49):
I see my fiance and my mom and dad. You're
gonna get to know each other. And it's a very
important thing because if you're fighting all the time, it's
hard to win baseball games.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
Not we knew where you were with you were obviously
been with the Yanks, you were with the Cubs. You
get traded here. You mentioned your fiance, and obviously that
has to get all put together. Have you figured out
when after October you're gonna be married? Since here in Houston,
October is not available.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
We take December, so we got time. We got time. Yeah, no,
she knows better, hopefully somewhere warm. No, it's in Houston,
so yeah, fine, yeah, No, I've made your book off October.
I've made my family to book off October. It's not
it's not even with the Cubs. It's like we're one
of the posts and we didn't make it. But you
got it. You're got to believe me, it's happened.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
Goal setting can be something a lot of guys do
talk about. Maybe keep it internal. You come in here.
Is there something that you're very focused on becoming? You
is I'm going to be a starting pitcher. I'm gonna
be in the rotation breaking him. I'm just going to
show them what I have. Are there any things you're
focused on as spring training arrives.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
I would like to be a starter right there. That's
gonna be a goal I have, But that's not the
goal right there. One thing stay healthy for the year.
I know that sounds it's a sleepy answers. Yeah, but
it's very important, right make the opening day roster. That's
something that I've only done once, right and uh and
and make to the playoffs, dude, I've never pitching the
playoff game. I always wanted to playoff games that come
(28:15):
into the sixth, seventh whatever, But no, I would like
to start. That's not the goal because I've had that
goal before and it didn't work out. And get upset.
But there's there's things that I want to accomplish, but
a lot of it's just things that I can control,
right staying healthy, working hard, and trying to make the
open day roster and show my best, my best put
my best befoward.
Speaker 8 (28:34):
You mentioned of being a Sam Houston alum and the
guy that's gonna be calling your games on our airwaves,
Steve Sparks, Sparky, he's a Sam Houston alum. How much
is that brought up to you? If you talked with
him yet gotten to know him a little bit.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
I have, I've talked to him. I want like a
little podcast podcast or sub radio something.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
Yeah, that's right, Yeah, awesome conversation.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
He uh, I've met Sparky at Sam how since I
was part of this.
Speaker 9 (29:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
We're doing.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
Get ready for the dad jokes? Yes, no, but so
he loved he loved.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
No, no, no, I know, not right, right, but the treasure.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
I'm on the board for some Sam Houston things for
baseball and and basically I have to go to this
Hall of Fame speech and I figure out that he's
getting inducted to the same Houston Hall of Fame. And
he tells the story about how he goes to this
tryout to be a shortstop and he runs the sixty
and y'all know the seven is not good. We'll start
with a seven. He turns around, he goes, why do
(29:33):
the pictures have to run a sixty today? He turned
into a knuckleball and was at same usage state. So
but he dude, I think he made that story up.
But it doesn't matter. I know how I got the
point of Steve Sparks.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
I'll tell you when I got this story. Quick story
I was a producer. We were getting him on and
I called him.
Speaker 9 (29:51):
I was like, all right, mister Sparks.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
So we're ready to go.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
He goes, yeah, what are you wearing?
Speaker 9 (29:55):
That was okay.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
This guy's different.
Speaker 7 (29:58):
We've talked so much football with you here, big Texans
guyde Do you have a thought about them letting their
offensive coordinator go and and what they can do moving
forward and how close.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
They might be.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
I don't know what they're gonna do. It is what.
Bobby's really good. He was real, he was really good.
I don't I get the frustration it happens. I don't
know some of my buddies today, Chip Kelly, that was
early and off season we're working out and he's they're
just saying they're screaming at Chip Kelly yesterday. I don't know.
I really, I really haven't. I've thought about it. Bobby
(30:30):
is really good. I hope he get like, does something right.
I was really up. I'm really happy with him. I
think he calls good games whatever. But I don't know
what they're gonna do. I I believe him to mekoh.
He's a really good culture builder and he's a smart guy.
We'll let him do a thing him and Nick.
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Sunday Night football, Monday night football for the Texans this
year at home is a pretty high likelihood. The Astros
are in town those weekends. A Saturday day game and
off day on Monday. You'll be at the NRG Stadium
on a Sunday night.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
I hadn't even thought about that that actually might be happening.
I didn't even think, yeah, that that that could be happening.
I'd love that. Actually, that's early in the year, though,
it has to be the first two or three weeks.
I was really upsex we played the Texans, played the Bears,
and they.
Speaker 7 (31:11):
Played Sunday after week.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Too late here, Yeah, I have missed that we were playing.
Still I wanted to. I want to get the guys
like a bunch of traders want to come down, and
I wanted to stay in my house and have a
good time. But it did work out, all.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Right, Hate thanks for the time, man, appreciate it. We
gotta got a root for our Houston guy here, I hope.
Speaker 6 (31:26):
So they asked for good luck this season and we'll
talk to him West Palm definitely.
Speaker 11 (31:30):
Hayden was Natsky here on Sports Talk seven ninety pleased
to be joined by Taylor Trummel, which sounds a lot
more classy than Trammel.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Hey, travel, Taylor, How I.
Speaker 6 (31:44):
Am Taylor Trummel, So that sounds much better, sounds classier.
Speaker 12 (31:46):
Absolute, absolutely, I'm not gonna First of all, Aura, can
we talk about Aura for a second?
Speaker 3 (31:52):
Early hot?
Speaker 12 (31:53):
Oh my goodness, he's got Aura, I like president you
Primiari League guy.
Speaker 8 (31:59):
I don't.
Speaker 9 (32:00):
I don't know anything about that.
Speaker 12 (32:01):
I just know the top players, and I'm like, he's
got he's got something to him.
Speaker 9 (32:05):
I'm like, yeah, look at him.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
He's from Norway's the Viking Warriors.
Speaker 9 (32:10):
Yeah, he's got a face on him. Like that's a yeah,
he's a good looking dude.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
All right, Taylor Tramvel, I have the okay, truth be told.
I got the Manchester City Chelsea game on right now.
They're up to to one, so I was watching that
during the break. But what sucks some baseball? Like I
love it.
Speaker 12 (32:27):
I love it here. There's a lot of good pace,
a lot of good people out here. Uh, Southern hospitality
something I'm used to. Uh, it's very welcoming here. Great food.
I've had some Mexican I have something. I had some barbecue.
Speaker 9 (32:38):
I've had feel about that. Uh, well, two days ain't
gonna hurt.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
That's what I like to hear.
Speaker 9 (32:45):
Yeah, when you're.
Speaker 7 (32:46):
New to the team and you're part of the caravan,
which you were for the past couple of days, you
you obviously you're gonna get to know your team is
a little bit. Did you get a sense of what
Astro's fandom.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
Is like because you made all these stops craziness, Uh,
in a good way.
Speaker 11 (32:59):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (33:00):
Lot of fans, a lot of diehard fans, And it
makes us feel welcome, especially being here and being new.
It's it's something that I enjoy because I love them
interacting with our fans. I love them interacting with the
people who get us around. I love that the people
that support us. So for me, it's a it's a
humbling experience because these guys are taking time out of
(33:20):
their Saturday today, they're coming out here supporting us, and Uh,
it's so like I said, it's a very humbling experience.
Speaker 8 (33:26):
You got to experience these guys from the opposing clubhouse
when you were in Seattle and other stops that you've
made throughout your career. What were your impressions of this
organization before you joined.
Speaker 7 (33:37):
Up with you can say hate those guys.
Speaker 9 (33:38):
I've got to say it was it was, it was.
It was a lot of respect. I'll say that, there's
a lot of respect.
Speaker 12 (33:45):
Every time you came into Houston or they came to
when I was at Seattle, when they came to Seattle,
you know, it was gonna be a good It was good,
gonna be a good matchup.
Speaker 9 (33:52):
And for me, uh, you know, you.
Speaker 12 (33:54):
Knew you were gonna get you know, the best arms
in the league every time. You know, you were gonna
get the best hitters in the league, so you have
to be locked in for nine innings.
Speaker 9 (34:02):
And for me, it was.
Speaker 12 (34:02):
Uh, it was fun because you know, when I found
out I was getting traded here, it was I was
very static because I know there's one thing, Uh, that's
the culture that they've built here. Uh, it's a winning culture.
And uh, I mean, you know we see it especially
last year. Just kind of how this year started and
then how we ended, like being able to get to
the playoffs, being able to win is you know, you're
(34:24):
looking at that, You're just like, these guys find a
way to win. And for me, that's something that I
feel like in my career. You know, I I've won
a lot in my career, so it's been fun to
just kind of be around these guys and to embrace
that winning culture again, and uh, I enjoy it. And
these guys here they're I mean, they're top class.
Speaker 9 (34:41):
Here.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
You mentioned that hearing that you got to trade to
take us through what.
Speaker 6 (34:45):
Happened, and you're like, all right, well, I guess I'm
packing up moving to Houston.
Speaker 1 (34:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (34:49):
So I was like, I was with the Yankees and
I got a call. Uh in talks with my my
agent and everything like that, and I got a call
and the Yankees said that they were gonna add me
to the forty man and they were gonna trade. And
I was like, you know, we hear that, you hear trade.
You're just kind of like, Okay, where could this possibly go?
And for me, it was there were a few teams
(35:09):
where I was like, I would love to go and
play for them.
Speaker 9 (35:11):
Houston was one of them.
Speaker 12 (35:12):
And when he told me Houston, I was like, I
was like, yeah, I told my wife. We have family
out here too as well. So I told my wife
and she was like she was a stat She was screaming, yelling,
and you know, I was, I was pumped up, so
I was just very happy to be here.
Speaker 7 (35:26):
I mean, it's an interesting twenty twenty four roster for you.
You spent a little time with the Dodgers or a waste,
then you're with the Yankees.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Who needs it?
Speaker 7 (35:34):
Now you're here in Houston.
Speaker 12 (35:35):
Three winning, three winning cultures, which I could say honestly
teams that have experienced in the World Series. And for me,
that's something I'm ecstatic about because I think there's only
one goal for every team that's the World Series, and
it's prevalent here and I'm very excited to be here.
Speaker 7 (35:53):
What parts of your game over the years, you're obviously
trying to, you know, be a bigger part of the
Mariners each of those years, and obviously with the Dodgers
and Yankees. You know, let me show you what I
can do and be a part of what you're doing more.
You're in the same situation here. You look around and
what the opportunities might be. How do you view what
this opportunity is here in Houston amongst their outfielders, how
you sit on the forty man things like that.
Speaker 12 (36:12):
Absolutely for me, I'm just I'm excited for me the
work that I put in with a bat. It's been
something that uh, you know, opportunity and consistency really hasn't
been there the past, you know, three years, and I'm
excited to just go out and just get get at bats,
get get comfortable. I think that's the biggest thing with
with guys when we kind of talk about just you know,
(36:33):
your careers, like, you know, how can you get into
a more comfortable feel how can you feel like you belong?
And with that it's at bats for pitchers, it's more innings.
And for me, I think that was a that's a
big thing that I'm looking forward to in this this
year's spring training. And then I would also say just
as far as my game, uh just just kind of
(36:53):
knowing the game, you know, defense is a big part
of my game.
Speaker 9 (36:55):
I enjoy.
Speaker 12 (36:56):
I enjoy being out there. I love being able to
say runs for pictures. I love being able to you know,
do you know, make plays out there, show my athleticism
and do all.
Speaker 9 (37:06):
Those type of things.
Speaker 12 (37:08):
There's I don't think there's I don't think there's more
bigger compliment than a picture coming up to you and
be like, hey man, I appreciate you.
Speaker 9 (37:14):
You just saved me like two runs right there.
Speaker 12 (37:16):
And when those guys are vouching for you to be
out there in the outfield, this is a very good feeling,
very good feeling.
Speaker 7 (37:21):
It sounds like you've already answered the question I'm about
to ask. Hit a homer or save a homer? Better feeling.
Speaker 9 (37:29):
Oh, it depends on who the homer's off of that.
Speaker 12 (37:33):
If I can say it, because you know, I did
it with Justin Verliine hit a.
Speaker 9 (37:38):
Homer off of him.
Speaker 12 (37:39):
That was probably one of the coolest moments of my career.
But I will say back in twenty three, I had
a really cool, I would say, kind of a game
saving catch over the wall on the side of the
left field. That was a very cool feeling for me
because I'm like, okay, yeah, we just I pretty much
just saved the game right there.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
Welcome guy, You're welcome.
Speaker 12 (38:00):
Yeah, don't don't celebrate so fast, but thank you in
advance for me.
Speaker 8 (38:07):
Taylor Tremill joined us here at Astros fan Fest, and
you know, I don't know how much of a chance
you've had to interact with coaching staff the development guys here,
but I mean from everybody we've talked with in the organization.
It seems like it's a top notch group in that room.
What have your impressions been with them? It's been amazing.
I've had a chance to be with a Snicker.
Speaker 12 (38:28):
He's, uh, we're Georgia boys, so we we've we've known
each other in the past. He was my hitting coach
in the Fall League in twenty eighteen, so that's the
connection that we have. And obviously being from Atlanta, that's
another connection that we have. So I've I've been in
contact with him and then pretty much everybody bell all
the guys, uh, everybody that I've talked to, and you know,
(38:49):
he get this inside scoop on the guys that have
formerly played here, the guys that are currently played here.
It's been Uh, it's been awesome. I've heard nothing but
great things. Everybody said, I'm gonna love it here. Everybody
said that the which you staff, you can talk to them.
You don't have to worry about, you know, saying the
wrong thing, just asking the wrong questions. Like like I
said earlier, comfortability is a big thing, especially with guys
(39:09):
that are coming in there are new and everybody. I
was here yesterday with the staff and everybody like that,
and it was just a very comfortable feeling.
Speaker 7 (39:17):
Any of them mention that you'd be in a left
field position group with Josel.
Speaker 12 (39:21):
To day, No nobody said anything, and for me, honestly, like,
I haven't really thought to.
Speaker 9 (39:28):
So it's been it's been pretty cool.
Speaker 8 (39:30):
You mentioned Smit and you know, you can't watch a
game and not see him in the dugout with guys
and he's got the tablet out.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
You know, kind of pointing through things.
Speaker 8 (39:38):
I mean, you know, was he that hands on with
you when when you had him, and I'm assuming it
was the Arizona Fall.
Speaker 9 (39:43):
League, Yeah, not so much, not so much.
Speaker 12 (39:45):
I think we had I think there's that kind of
like balance that you have to have, especially with like
when you're dealing with other players and you know, the
other prospects.
Speaker 9 (39:52):
And everything like that. But uh, we we we had conversations.
I could say that part.
Speaker 12 (39:57):
We had conversations and he was he was like, hey, man,
like really like you. And I really enjoyed the way
that he interacted with the Astros guys that were there.
And you can see a difference between the Astros guys
that were there and then obviously like some other teams
and it was like, those guys have a plan. Those
guys are like probably a year or two ahead of
(40:19):
some of these guys that are coming up, and you
just see like the as far as the development, the
attention to detail. For me, that was something where I
was like, we're talking about places that I probably would
want to play. That was a pointer for me where
I was like, Yeah, these guys, they they know how
to win, they know how to like develop guys into
being the players that they are. Obviously, you see the
(40:41):
products of the guys that are the farm farm system
now and then the guys that were in the farm
so that they are in the big leagues or even
went on to different teams, the success that they have.
So that was, like I said, that was for me
where I was like, yeah, this is the organization that
I really respect and I want to play for.
Speaker 7 (40:55):
Does a left handed hitter come to Houston and think
maybe a conversation with your on Alvarez could have some value?
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Oh?
Speaker 12 (41:02):
Absolutely, I saw him hit yesterday and uh, yes, that
is a conversation that uh you know, I was I
was a fly on the wall when they were talking
and I was taking everything in and uh, obviously you know,
you see Crawford's box over there, and you're just like, hey,
that's gonna help my swing out a lot.
Speaker 9 (41:18):
Being able to go to the other side of the field.
Speaker 12 (41:20):
You don't have to feel like you have to pull
everything go dead center or anything like that. It's like, yeah,
you know, I can hit the ball hard in it.
You know you be rewarded for it going backside. So
it's a good feeling, good feeling.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
What is that process?
Speaker 6 (41:31):
Like you talked about the attention to detail and all
that type of stuff and working with a sticker as somebody.
Are you somebody that tries not to think too much
or try to get you have to keep your head
clear or what is that like for you when you
get into the batter's box and that batter's box and
work on those things.
Speaker 12 (41:46):
I try to I try to prepare as much as possible,
and then once I get into the box or anything
like that, I try to just get away from Like
I try to just clear my mind because overall, if
I preper if I prepare my body for anything that
I do or anything like that, I feel like during
the game it's just gonna take over.
Speaker 8 (42:03):
You know.
Speaker 12 (42:03):
I've been doing this for you know, I've been hitting
for I don't know, twenty plus years or something like that.
Speaker 9 (42:08):
So it's a good feeling.
Speaker 12 (42:10):
Whenever you prepare, prepare, prepare, and you get into the
box and it's just like, okay, now let's compete, let's
compete against these guys. Let's get the job done. So
when when I'm preparing and everything like that, it's a
lot of attention to detail how my body feels, what
my form is, and how everything's going. And then when
I get into the boxes, hey, get the job done.
And that's that's how the simplification has kind of developed
(42:34):
in my career as far as just get the job done.
Speaker 9 (42:36):
It doesn't matter how you do it, just get the
job done.
Speaker 7 (42:39):
You certainly appreciate you sitting down with us. Know you've
had a chance to see and get to know a
little of the fans yesterday. What do you think of FanFest?
Speaker 9 (42:46):
This is crazy? I love it. I love it here.
I've been to a few fan fests, but this, I will.
Speaker 12 (42:52):
Say this, this group of fans they're so like attentive,
they know everybody. Uh you know, like I said, I'm
new here, so like I'm getting the whole Hey, Taylor,
how are you doing Hey, And I'm like, Okay, these
guys know their players, they know they're they're invested.
Speaker 9 (43:10):
You know.
Speaker 12 (43:10):
You know that first first game here against the Mets,
you know they're gonna be out here. There's gonna be
a strong, strong presidence out there. So, like I said,
I played here against these guys and it's not a
fun place to play one of the opposing teams. So
it's a credit to the fans, it's credit to everybody
that's here and uh that invests a lot of their
time and uh and then resources here.
Speaker 7 (43:30):
Well, Taylor, we certainly appreciate the time. Glad you're here
in Houston, Oh for good things and best to you guys. Yeah,
hit Florida.
Speaker 9 (43:36):
Absolutely, I appreciate you guys. Thank y'all.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
All right, thank you.
Speaker 11 (43:38):

the Crawford Box Cast, presented by Carbox Brewing. Ross excited
that baseball seasons almost here.
Speaker 6 (43:50):
Absolutely, we had fan fast over the weekend, those great interviews.
That just means we're getting close. Here comes spring training,
here comes uh, the start of the season. It's already
all almost here.
Speaker 5 (44:00):
Crazy, Yeah, it's it's it's wild, it's here.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
But it's exciting because it means I get to sit
back at a bar, or at car back and enjoy
an ice cold Crawford Boch on tap. Look, it's nothing
that gets the cans at home. You gotta you gotta
have plenty of those at the house. But I like
being at a bar, watching an Astros game and enjoying
some ice cold Crawford boc on tap, particularly over there
Carbock burning. And uh, they bring us the Crawford box
(44:25):
Cast and we will talk to you guys next time,
coming up here more regularly, right here on the Crawford
box Cast on Sports Talk seven ninety
