Today on the Doug Pike Show, Doug talks about the recent Texas Wildfires, Bass fishing in full swing, and possible laws & regulations that could affect the parks and resources of Texas.

Addition to the program starts right now, and I got
in here a couple of minutes late. Oh boy, oh boy,
I'm rushing, rushing to get everything just exactly.

I had a lot going on this morning, and I
had to Actually I got in here earlier than I
usually do. That was good, But then I got to
look at all the things I want to talk about
today and realize that it's going to be very hard
to get all that sugar in one sack.

So much going on.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
First of all, we're dealing with wildfires, and pardon me,
in Texas, and that's never good. I don't care where
wildfires are. Wherever they are, and you'd be surprised. There
are websites out there where you can just type in
a state and type in wildfires, and I'm pretty sure

that every state has a similar sight. And each time
I've done that and punched in Texas, seems like there
are more fires going going on. Then we realize a
lot of them don't even make the news apparently, and
I'm not talking about major giant things like happened to

Los Angeles and Hawaii. And then there's some big ones
over in the Carolina's even more recently, and then our
fire is here, of course, but there are lots of
smaller fires that pop up all over the state, all
over every state, and it really is eye opening to
see how often that happens at least, and I don't

know what the minimum size of a wildfire has to
be to make that map or to draw attention of
local news, but any wildfire is a bad wildfire.

That's kind of the way I look at it. There's just.

I feel that's one of the things that scares me most,
probably not for where I live, but just for humanity
in general. I cannot imagine being rousted from a deep
sleep by a policeman's flashlight banging on my front door
telling me that we have to leave. My whole family

has to get out of the house in two minutes
because there's a wildfire down the street and it's headed
our way. That would I think that that might scare
me more than water. Where most of us live. If
the water rises, we can kind of rise with it.
We can move from the first floor to the second floor,

(02:34):
we can move from the first floor to the roof,
or somehow, some way. The water is probably not going
to consume us.

I would hope.

And now there are exceptions to all of that, of course,
and they're devastating when any of them happens.

But I would rather.

I would rather take my chances with water than fire,
I really would. I just don't see any I don't
see any out really, although we do see stories, the
animals seem to have ways of figuring it out, or
just maybe the ones that I've seen a couple of
stories after most of these fires about an animal that

suddenly showed up a month There was a one out
the California fires. There was a cat that showed up
two months after it was just presumed dead when the
entire neighborhood in which it lived just got turned to ash,
and all of a sudden, this cat just appears out
of nowhere and identifiable, and the owner there were pictures

posted of it around town, and I think it even
might have made the local news out there. And the
owner of that cat stepped forward and said, yeah, you know,
here's a picture of my house burnt to the ground.
Here's a picture of the cat in the house before
it burnt to the ground.

We didn't know what happened to the cat.

We just crossed our fingers and set a prayer, and
darn it, that cat didn't show up two months two
months later, crazy stuff seven one three two one two

The good news for these.

Fires we're having around here locally and currently is that well,
first of all, most of them are under control, are
close to it. And secondly, we've got moister air coming
off the Gulf of Mexico. And air's air, you might think,
and fires can burn in moist air or dry air,

but that dry stuff sure makes it harder for the
firefighters to put everything out. It's sure is tough when
the wind's blowing hard as it has been for a
few days. The values are down considerably this morning, down
into the into the single digits. Where did I put
my little mouse there?

We have more remote controls and keyboards and monitors in
here than I think are necessary, but they're here. The
other highest wind we've got right now, just snapshot of
where we are is it appears to be ten miles
an hour, and that is at Rosenberg. I'll take that
back there as at fourteen fourteen at Rice University out

of somebody must have a fan turned on or something.
Otherwise it's single digits until you get all the way
over to Texas Point, which is right over there by
Louisiana border, and then even offshore it's pretty light. There
are a couple of elevens a little farther down south,

more off Matta Gorda than off Galveston, but the rest
of it and the inland stuff is good as well,
except for that anomaly at Rice University. Everything single digits
basically until you get way down south, and there's even
not much there, so that's a long way to go
to get nothing out of the sack of wind that

we're dealing with.

Be a nice, calm day.

There was some talk about potential higher winds this afternoon,
which is that's normal this time of year, normal almost
every time of year around here. But it's not going
to be so bad for these fires because it is
coming off the Gulf of Mexico and that does carry
moisture into the air, and that moisture it.

Doesn't prohibit fire.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
It just inhibits fire, keeps things a little bit more
manageable for these people who are out there doing that.
There is so much going on I've got two pages
of cool stuff to talk about today, plus whatever you
guys come up with that you want to talk about.

and going in full steam, at full steam ahead right
now is bass fishing, and I've actually been doing a
little bit. I'm gonna be kind of modifying and moving
and shaking here, trying to get a couple of things

bass fishing going on just up the.

Expected WHEN i went fishing yesterday, AFTERNOON i couldn't help.
MYSELF i went out with a friend with my Buddy
daniel On thursday, afternoon and we Did, okay we actually,
did and we somehow stumbled onto a more a greater
variety of fish THAN i did. Yesterday we stood out

there at The Little lake Golf Course lakeside fish and
managed to catch it's almost like The Five days Of
christmas or. WHATEVER i think we had four or, five,
no four, BASS i think total between. Us we had two,
Catfish we had one crappie and one fresh water drum
and totally un that croppy ate a crank bait that

would be be big enough to attract a king. Mackerel
That daniel was. Throwing it was a significantly sized. CRANKY
i was kind of surprised WHEN i, LOOKED i saw the,
flash and we had just caught two catfish from the same,
spot also both on, lures AND i thought for sure
that that's That daniel had finally caught a bass out

of this little, spot BECAUSE i saw just that flash
underwater with the color and lo and behold it was
a croppy and a pretty dog one nice one too
THAT i was very surprised at that that little fish
with that soft little mouth of its went after that
big old, bait but it. Did they're hungry in, there

AND i think that's partly because cormorants keep eating up
all their. Food there's another little SHADTHATCH i saw JUST i,
mean we're talking like fry almost they are. Not they
just look like it looks like somebody's throwing silver glitter
into the. Water and when you see, them they're not
even big enough to recognize as as fish.

Yet and so probably in.

About three four, WEEKS i don't know exactly how long
there'll be an issue THAT i have to go deal

seen up in the, Mountains i've seen areas that were
ravaged by fire thirty forty fifty years. Ago the old the,
stalks or not the, stalks but the trunks of trees
are just still standing and everything else is just burnt
to the. Ground it comes. Back, eventually it comes, back

which it always. Will all, right we got to take

Game it's only only rule Bass master has is there's
a specific number of inches of screen they can have
on their. Boat once they reached that, limit they can't
have any. More so they could have a thirty six
cent screen on the, front but then they only HAVE x.
AMOUNT i think they're only allowed AND i want to
say it's fifty five inches of screen they're allowed on the.

the guys had three or four so they could see

was just you couldn't throw a rock without hitting a
bas there were that many fish in. There it was so.
Far it was a great place to bring my son
into it because he never got.

Fish but and THEN i went through that horrible dry
spell early back through winter WHERE i couldn't catch a
fish at all in. THERE i thought they'd pretty much
wiped it. Out But i'm finding out that there there
are still some good fish left in. There and my
Buddy daniel On thursday actually caught one that was about
a foot, Long so that may be that may be
the one that the cormorants missed in their in their.

was you, know listening to todcast THAT i like. Say
he's a big kind of local. Prof anybody's ever heard of.
Him it's easy to look. Up but he was talking
about the classic and forward facing. CENTER i hope it's one,
traditionally he. Said, yeah these young kid forward facing, center
they don't know how to get up there in the
shallows and figure it. Out, yeah but he, said he,
said anybody can drag a chatter bait around and catch a.

who lives kind of in the neighborhood off the golf,

There they're they're very careful with the. Fish they don't
tear them. Up and, ANYWAY i saw him and he

Afternoon he, said, Well i've only caught, one but my
friends caught.

manna go get me A roman chatter bait and get after.

Gonna help you too on the chatter bay to get
you something you familiar, With like the beaver style lures
a lot of people flip LIKE i throw the reaction
reaction innovation sweep.

Yeah but if you take a beaver and thread it
on that chatter bait, hook you, know, sideways. Horizontal the
flatness of that chatter. Bait if the flatness of that,
beaver if you keep it, running it'll come over a
lot of. Wood oh, yeah the flat it won't let
it turn over like it. Does and, like, OKAY i
didn't think about. It but if you throw it open,
hook it's like it's like you, know it's like throwing

GOT i hung it once yesterday AND i, was, oh,
MAN i was so, worried AND i was on kind

darn thing hung up about maybe eight ten yards up
the bank from, me and it just wasn't.

Had to free spool that and walk back about ten,
yards walk up the hill and then over about fifteen
yards to get a totally different angle on that.

man because that's the only ONE i had in the.
BAG i just didn't.

wouldn't take one full minute to catch the large mouth,
bass whereas in salt water, now, grant a sixteen inch
trout isn't gonna keep you busy for a minute or.
More but when you start getting into five six seven pound,

gonna keep you honest for more than a. Minute and
add redfish to the, equation and there's just no question
that you're gonna be there for more than a.

AND i STILL i stand by. That there's just saltwater
fish have to be, stronger they have to be, faster

six foot, long, marlin there's something wanting to eat. You
there's something that will eat you if you slow down

acres for, waterfowl make sure there's tons of water, there

Exactly by the, way if you ever want to learn
how to do a little duck, calling ask. Him he's
got bushel baskets full of trophies and. Accolades he's won

Once great. Guy he's about my, AGE i, guess maybe
a little bit, younger probably a little bit. Younger works
hard all year round to make sure that everything is

ready to go when the season. Starts and that means building,
blinds that means moving water and putting in more water
and creating a perfect ideal waterfowl habitat so the birds

only to members of the. Club and their guests. Too
he doesn't run any guided hunts on his, places which

is a nice twist, really because if you're gonna work
hard as a as a regular sportsman, hunter you're gonna work.
Hard you want to make sure you're in a good,
spot and a lot of outfits that the good spots
kind of go to the guide. Sometimes let's face, it

places and it's a it's it could be, frustrating but

and their guests who are hunting down, there and all
of the blinds that they have, out all of these
