Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with Lawton Swan. Finally,
(00:44):
Clemson Sports Talk has come back two drive time. Hello everybody,
Lord and Swan back in the saddle once again. It
is the show that shakes the south Land. Clemson Sports
Talk for you each every afternoon as you make your
way around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,
listening to us on incredible radio stations like fox Port
(01:07):
Radio fourteen hundred in the Midlands, heard around the world
on the iHeartRadio app and of course, the show The
Shakespare South lamb brought you in part by our good
friends over at Mets Plumbing. Seven three to two Drip,
Drip Drip. You know the jingle, seventh three to two drip.
That's Mets Plumbing.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
On the show today we will hear from Clemson quarterback
Kate Klebnick. We'll continue our conversation about Clemson alcohol Sorry
about Clemson announcing that alcoholic beverages will be sold during
not just the spring game coming up on Saturday, but
(01:48):
throughout the season. In Death Valley, one of the last
schools in the country, and I've seen mixed reviews and
we'll get into some of that and also the Clubs
Tiger baseball team yesterday down in down in North Augusta
taking on Georgia Southern. They come away with a victory
(02:10):
there as they get ready for a heck of a
road trip. They'll go across the country to Berkeley. They
take on Cal this weekend. So you talk about a
college baseball road trip, and I'm sure Cal and Stanford
are getting accustomed to that with all the trips that
they're making to the East Coast. But for the first
time since Cal and Stamford joined the league, Clemson, in
(02:32):
one of the three major men's sports, will travel across
the country to face one of their Atlantic Coast conference
a West Coast brethren, if you will, so again, Clubson
Tiger Baseball yesterday on the road getting the job done.
I guess technically a neutral site game. They're in North
(02:55):
Augusta outlasting Georgia Southern ten to eight. So we'll get
to that in a minute. But back to the elector
at hand on Clemson's introduction of alcohol beverage sales, and
I don't know if they realized when they put it
out that it was April Fool's Day and that it
would be received as potentially an April Fool's Day deal.
(03:16):
I mean, there were already people out there saying, oh, hey,
here's this you know, here's this purple helmet Clemson is
gonna wear this season. Oh, here's this purple turf the
Tigers are going to debut and have available for a
game this year or whatever. But this news hit and
a lot of people on social media thought, no, not true,
(03:40):
that's your legs being pulled.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Swany.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
But you had a quote from Graham nef talking about
at Clemson University athletic director, and at the end of
the statement that was on Clemson's website, Clemson Tigers dot com,
there was no little you know, asterisk or star or
whatever telling you, oh, just kidding, you know, we fool you.
This is a policy that's apparently going to take place,
(04:06):
and it will begin on Saturday. So if you thought
it was in April Fool's joke, on Saturday, you'll be
able to confirm whether it was or wasn't by whether
or there is or isn't beer being sold during Clemson's
spring game. And again, as I am aware and as
(04:29):
it has been presented thus far, this is accurate. But
I was talking to a couple of people about it,
and I saw people on social media commenting. Some people
feeling like it's about time, you know, finally, and then
there is this other group that's like, do not want.
(04:53):
There's also a couple of factors that certainly go into
this Number one. I think most notably what you're talking
about is the financial boon that this can bring to
the university and to the athletic department. I don't think
there's any question that there will be a significant amount
(05:17):
of alcohol sales in the stadium. And I think that
when you look around the country, whether this was the
thing that you really want, you really wanted Clemson to
never do. When you're one of just three Power for
(05:39):
schools that offers neither the sale of alcoholic beverage in
this venues nor accept sponsorship revenue from alcoholic beverage advertisers,
that's a pretty slim group. Now, to explain that further,
that doesn't mean because when I first read it, I thought, well,
(06:02):
it's clip to one of the only schools that doesn't
serve alcohol at the games. Not necessarily, it's not one
of three that don't serve alcohol. They were one of
three that either didn't serve alcohol or have alcoholic beverages
as a revenue sponsor. You know, this brought to you
(06:23):
by mic Ultra or by bud Light or whatever. Now,
the other aspect that I do want to get to
are the people that would say I'm not interested in
my kids being around alcohol on a college football game
(06:46):
day or in the stadium. And listen, as a guy
who's raised two kids, I mean, I guess raising we're
not done fifteen and twelve. I remember going to the games,
and I remember the kids being young and in the
stands and and.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
All of that.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
And there's not alcohol really around you other than the
things that people maybe sneak into their boots with a
mini bottle or whatever. I mean, let's not pretend that
there's not alcohol in the in the venue.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
There is in addition to that.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
And I think this is where it got a little
squirrely for a lot of people, is that in the boxes,
the suites, in the club areas.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
There's alcohol in the venue.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
And I think, look, if you had a zero tolerance
policy for alcohol in the venues, in all of the suites,
in all of the club areas, the club level, if
it was a zero tolerance deal, across the board, you
(08:06):
probably have something to stand on if you said, well,
I don't want that in the stadium. I don't want
to be a part of it. But if you're like, well,
but I didn't have it in my area.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
I didn't have it in my seats.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
And then I pose the question of well, would you
accept tickets to sit in the suite with.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
You know, certain individuals. Would you go to a suite?
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Would you be interested in a year of being in
a suite in Death Valley instead of in your typical seats,
And you would say most of you would go, yeah,
of course, put me into the Defender suite. Swan Swanie,
I'm all about it. And if you get in there
(09:01):
and there's alcohol, you're gonna go wait a second, no, no, no,
I insists put me back in the sun one hundred degrees.
I like it within my family, and I get baked
like a piece of sausage.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
I like sweating profusely and being under hydrated. So if
you look at it from that standpoint, I think there
are some of you that would go, hey, no, no, no,
I don't want that in the stadium. And I would
say to you, well, it's in the stadium and you say, well,
(09:40):
it's not around me, And I say, well, would you
like to sit in a suite? And if you said yeah,
I'll take those tickets one, well, guess what you're gonna
be around it. So therein lies the crux of it's
around you, and it's gonna be there, not to mention.
And I do want Clemson games to be fan for
family friendly, you know all of that stuff, But you
(10:06):
can't convince me if you said to me it swanny.
I just don't want my kids to see people drinking.
I would say to you, how do y'all walk in
the stadium? Do they wear a blindfold? Is it like
pin the tail on the donkey? As you're walking in?
There are people drinking everywhere everywhere around the stadium. Now,
(10:31):
if you stay home because you don't want to be
around people drinking and you don't want your kids to
see that, I have no problem. I respect that you
can do that, but let's not pretend that the only
place that your child would see a beverage of some
description is inside the stadium while you're out at the tailgate.
(10:57):
It's just just doesn't make sense. And so again Clemson's
doing some proactive things. I don't even know if it
was a partnership with the state or what, but the
fact that they are not going to accept the vertical IDs,
(11:18):
meaning you have to have an upgraded ID. You can't
have the training ID. If you will, you got to
have the upgrade, the twenty one and up ID, the
one that's horizontal in nature. That to me is a
bit of a surprise. I don't know what it costs
to get a new ID. I'm assuming about fifteen twenty bucks,
(11:39):
but if you have the vertical one, you're not going
to be able to get a beer, even if you're
twenty five years old. If you've got the vertical ID,
too bad. So a lot of changes coming on that front.
And I know a lot of people were upset about
that news yesterday. Some people very excited about it. One
(12:01):
individual I talked to had this to say, and I
think it makes a lot of sense. They said, Wow,
it was kind of hoping they would hold out, but
I know they can't afford to.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
And that it was part of the image of the school.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
And I think that's fair. I think it's fair to
say that the lack of alcohol in the stadium at
Clemson and then the venues at Clemson was part of
the image, certainly part of the family friendly aspect of
it all. And I will openly admit that when I
go to college games, or when I'm watching a college
(12:43):
game on television, I see somebody in the stadium drinking
a beer, it still is a little bit surprising to
me by comparison to when I watch a pro game,
where I expect it.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
And I think that as consumers.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Of college football and of Clemson college football, I think
we're just gonna have to adjust to that aspect of it.
I would challenge our game cop friends who hang out
with us here on the program each and every day,
who spend several hours peeking over the fence and being
a part of the program.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
But you could continue to peek over the fence at
the best radio showing the nation.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
If you were anti alcohol sales at South Carolina and
you guys have had it for a few years, how
has that gone for you so far, just in the
sense of personally having it in the venue. Did it
make such a difference that you go, Man, I can't
stand to go to WILLIAMS. Brice Stadium anymore. I would
(13:44):
think that number of people that you know that group
is very small. And then I would also love to
hear eight oh three four or five zero zero eighty six.
I'd also love to hear from the person at South
Carolina that was I guess you'd call it pro alcohol sales,
(14:05):
and whether you've had such a negative experience with it
that you would say, I wish I could go back,
and I think it is just beer right now in
the boxes. I can tell you there's liquor whatever people
want to drink. According to what I can find online,
(14:33):
South Carolina's athletic department generated roughly three million dollars in
revenue from beer sales at Williamsbrice Stadium for football. They
generated one point seven million in Colonial Life Arena or
at Colonial Life Arena from basketball, and about a million
(14:56):
at Bounder's Park. So that's almost six million dollars in
total revenue from beer sales and in an nil era.
I don't I don't know how that money, you know,
how it gets divvied up or what can go towards,
(15:18):
you know, however it works. But six million is six million.
That's revenue, and so it's hard to turn it away.
I don't know. By what school would you think would
be you know, larger than that, Like, what school do
you think? I mean, South Carolina Stadium in football is
(15:39):
about the same size as Clemson pretty close. I mean,
is there a comparison? Do you want to check an
acc school? Let me see if I can get Florida
State's numbers. Florida state beer sales revenue not readily available.
(16:02):
According to what I can find, South Carolina's came up
pretty quickly. Give me one more, like, well, if you
go to a venue like Tennessee where you've got like
a much larger amount of people. In twenty twenty three,
(16:23):
this says more than two hundred and seventy eight thousand
beers were sold in Niland Stadium, totaling more than three
point three million. But that doesn't say whether it's revenue.
And I don't know how much a beer cost in
these venues. I'm assuming they're expensive. I don't think they're
gonna be cheap. I don't think you're gonna be catching
(16:44):
like the two dollars bud light. I think you're probably
looking closer to what eight dollars a pop looks like,
more than that, because if it's two hundred and seventy
eight thousand at eight dollars a pop, that's only two
point two million.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
So, man, are those.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Things twelve dollars a pop? Yes, twelve dollars a pop
for a beer at the game. That's the other side
of it, for the anti you know, for the the well,
I don't want that around.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
My kid thing.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
If you put the price at the right point, you
can generate a lot of money with a few beer
with very few beers being sold. So if you have
seven home games a year, if you sold two hundred
and seventy eight thousand, that's about thirty nine thousand beers
(17:44):
being sold a game. Half of the fan and again
that's a one hundred thousand seed stadiums. That's I got
third of the fans having one beer. And my hunches
that it's more like, and I think you take that
number down, there's probably just a handful of people that
(18:06):
might have four beers total, with like a husband and
wife both of them having two beers.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Again, I see both sides of it, I really do.
But in this day and age, with revenue being what
it is, or needing to be what it is, it's
hard to look around at everything that Clemson's done that's
been positive on that front and not say well, maybe
they should at least lean in and take a gander,
(18:38):
take a sneak peek, just to see what they can
get out of it. And again they talked about in
the press release, they'll reevaluate, they'll see how it goes.
But I think the thing they're looking for is at
the bottom line, it's the revenue. Like you want to
talk about the gap from UPNS deal et cetera that
(19:01):
you're dealing with with the SEC tackle on the South
Carolina and other programs making two three, you know, five
million dollars whatever additionally from alcohol sales, and you're not
doing it. You, whether you want it or not. As
a fan, you almost have to play the game just
(19:21):
in order to try to keep up a little bit
and to give yourself a couple of steps in the
right direction in terms of the bottom line of your company.
And that's what this is. It is a huge business.
It's always been a business, but now more so than ever,
(19:44):
it's a significant business driven by revenues and alcohol sales
will push those revenues up. Based off of what we've
seen looking at some of the data that's available. Quick
Break will come back with more here On a Wednesday afternoon,
Clemson's sports saw the show This shakes the south Land
Lawton Swan hang out with you on a Wednesday afternoon.
(20:08):
All right, So the portal not my favorite topic, but
it's portal season in college basketball, so we do have
to get into it. And Clemson, of course has essentially
had the entire squad portal out at this point except
(20:32):
for Dylan Hunter. Obviously, there's some freshmen like Ace Buckner,
who's still a part of the team that you haven't
seen play. There's the incoming freshmen that are still a
part of the class, and we'll be there. But in
terms of players on the court, once Christian Reeves ventured
(20:56):
into the portal, essentially every that played with graduation and
all that, except for Dylan Hunter is no longer with
the Clemson program. Well, one of those players did find
(21:16):
a home in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
That news coming out a little.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Bit earlier today, as former Clemson small forward Chauncey Wiggins
decided he'll stay in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He's going
to go to Florida State. Of course, the Seminoles charting
a new path as their longtime head coach, Leonard Hamilton,
decided to hang it up at the end of the season.
(21:44):
Luke Lox is the head coach, and Wiggans six' ten
nearly six, eleven two hundred and fifteen pounder will be
headed down To tallahassee to play for. Them wiggins had
some bright spots for The tigers this past, season most
notably at a point in a year where Anytime wiggans
(22:05):
scored ten points or, more The tigers won those ball.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Games.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Well as the season, Progressed Dylan hunter moved into the starting,
Lineup wiggins seemed to get a little bit more, hesitant
and most, people unfortunately For, wiggins will probably remember less
about his great moments and more about his sort of
(22:32):
meltdown that he had In clemson's final game of the,
season where he shot about a six foot air ball
which just short armed it in a big moment and
again with The tigers playing poorly against, McNeice he needed
all the help you can, get and that moment just
(22:55):
felt like a guy that wasn't, ready wasn't, Ready and you,
know you hate to see what's happened with college. BASKETBALL
i know we talk about it a. Lot but you,
know when guys land in, Conference when guys land in THE,
(23:17):
Acc i'm. Good i'm all for. It When ben Middle
brooks ended up AT Nc, State i'm, Good i'm all for.
IT i like it when you get to play a
guy who left your, PROGRAM.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
I love.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
That and, Again clemson's not the only school in the
country that's been the victim of the transfer. Portal of,
Course South carolina also Losing Cam, scott the Former Lexington.
Star yesterday Is scott's name came up as one venturing
into the, portal AND i don't know if that was
(23:57):
about the return Of Michie, johnson who's going to make
his way back From Ohio. State michie started his career
At Ohio, state went To South, carolina went back To Ohio,
state and that was back At South carolina for what
will be his final season playing college. Basketball but With
Cam scott, entering you, know the Game cocks lose a
(24:19):
player who when he decided he was going to go
To South. Carolina it was such a surprise because Camp
scott had been committed To texas for a significant amount
of time AND i believe had signed a letter of
intent and they allowed him about a year. Ago as
(24:42):
a matter of, Fact texas allowed Camp scott to be
released from his nil and he ended up playing right
here as a freshman in his own backyard In. Columbia
and so it was a surprise for a lot of
people when that news broke and we had we Had
(25:04):
mike you'va on the show, yesterday and all of that
happened After mike went off the. Air during his freshman,
Season scott average just two and a half points per,
game shooting twenty seven point eight percent from the field
in seventeen point eight percent from beyond the, arc so
not spectacular.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
From that.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
Standpoint really. Struggled i'll be interested to see where he
ends up because of the season that he. Had he
was a top fifty player coming out of high school
and for a kid from the state Of South, carolina
the venture all the way out to play In, Austin
(25:45):
texas with The, LONGHORNS i, mean that was a big.
Deal but after WHAT i would label a lackluster freshman,
campaign you, know Is Cam scott a guy that a
big time power. Program we'll, say, yeah we'll give that
kid a. Shot we'll take a shot with that. Guy
(26:06):
or did his one season In, colombia do enough to
or do enough damage to his resume that maybe he
ends up going and, playing you, know at a smaller
school and look in the portal, era that's. Okay like
if you got to go To, charlotte play for the
(26:28):
forty nine ers for a, year get your college basketball
sea legs underneath, you so to, speak and then return
to power for basketball after a good. Season, hey it's.
AVAILABLE i, mean let's not act like it's not. Available
camp's got played in twenty six, games but played no
more than ten minutes in any game After february. Eighth
(26:56):
so For South carolina fans who were super excited About
Cam scott flipping his commitment and landing In, columbia, now
much like a lot of The clemson, roster there's another another,
name and this one for The Game. COCKS a blue
chip recruit maybe didn't play like a blue chip player
(27:18):
in year, one but a blue chip recruit hitting the
road via the transfer. Portal, Well i'll tell you a
guy that did not portal out k club New clemson.
Quarterback we'll hear some more From cave when we, return
and stay with. Us clemson's sports salt lot and swan
back at it with you on A wednesday. Afternoon, yesterday
(27:41):
we heard From clemson quarterback K clubnick a portion of
his time with the, media And clubnick was asked we'll
get more into some of what he had to, say
but he was asked, about you know the physicality of
a guy Like Antonio williams especial when you was talking
About brian westcoas hysic old, head he's a little bit.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
Different frank can tests can test the. Balls how much
have you see? That, yeah just just more.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
Physical you, Know brian can make every catch out, there
but it's just you, know the high point balls where
he's you, know fighting, off fighting, off fighting off to
the last, second being just. Stronger but that's just his
work ethic is you, know his his expectations for, himself.
Speaker 3 (28:23):
Similar to, me are very, high probably than higher than everybody.
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Else's so you, know he's gonna keep getting better and
keep getting bigger and, stronger and it's it's been really
fun to see.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
Him Kake clemon was also asked to give his thoughts ON.
Tj moore as he's out there for his first spring With.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
Clemson, YEAH i.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
Mean he's just reliable you, know it's just a guy
that you, know you can depend on all the. Time
it's it's, fun, man to have to have a bunch
of guys out there that you can depend on in
everyone on one. SCENARIO i don't it doesn't really matter
who's out there right. Now i've got full you, know
IF i got one on one option with, him, like it's.
Fun you, know it's it's, exciting AND i haven't really you,
(29:00):
know if we've had it in the, past but not
to the level that we have and now we just
keep growing on.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
It So TJ's just.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
You, know he's.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Elite he's elite. Man he's he's gonna Be he's gonna be.
Speaker 5 (29:10):
Great.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Kay.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Club that was also asking about what he's seen From
Tyler brown bouncing back and maybe comparing him To Antonio
williams from a year.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
Ago, Yeah tyler looks really, good, man he looks he
looks really. Good he looks just, quick and his hands are.
Great you, know he's he couldn't. Play he was on
the jugs machine every, day so that's kind of that's
what you gotta.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Do so his hands are really. Good he looks.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Twitchy, yeah he's he's definitely take a. Jump he was
really good as freshman, year but that's you, know he's
he's he's gotten a lot better and that's that's really,
exciting especially coming off the entry he had definitely similar
to some.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
Club nick also gave some insight Into Adam randall making
that move to running back this.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Season he's looking.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Good he's looking.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
Good it's it's, Fun it's it's a good. Time he's
a great. Leader you, know he's a great leader for that.
ROOM i think that it's kind of a younger, room
AND i got a lot of guys looked up To
ship And will over the past, Sorry ship And phil
over the past few. Years and it's it's great to
have a big time leader in there because he's you,
know he's done.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
It but it's it's.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
Fun it's fun to kind of use him in different.
Ways and his work ethic.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Is you, know second to. None so it's.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
Exciting it's. Exciting i'm. Excited probably. Free, yeah he's playing.
Free you, know he just looks like he's going out
there having.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
Fun.
Speaker 4 (30:20):
YEAH i would say that's a great way to. Play
it's just looks like he's going out there having fun
and just excited to.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Play ball cake.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
Cleve it was also asked About Adam randall and how
he's kind of grown to somebody in the past protection
aspect of.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Things, yeah, yeah, absolutely even, yesterday like we had a
tough look that the defense gave us where they were
walking up seven, guys and just the calms and his
his calmness and just presence about.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Him Hey i'm going here to, here you know.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Whatever from from the first time that he started, that you,
know going to The texas game and to, now it's it's.
Huge he's Made he's made, big big leaps and that's
that's credit to the extra hours that he's put. In
credit Coach spiller and getting, right you, know and and
really teaching him the way and you know that can
that's that's probably one of the hardest parts is past
pro so because it's it's mental and you got to be,
(31:07):
right you, know you got to be right because the
whole play can can be depending on. It so definitely
really proud of, him and that whole room is you,
know really really.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Good that whole room is.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Great you, know we Got keith is absolutely balling out,
easy looking good and got a few guys coming.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Back so that's that's gonna be.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
FUN K Club that was also asked about the mesh
aspect of the running game and how that's got to
become just muscle memory for the.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Group it's definitely been something that you, know he was
definitely new. TO i think that any of us would
be new to if we've never gone to take a
hand off. Before so, yeah it's just getting muscle memory
and just getting reps and reps and, reps and it'll
be you, know cushing we said the other, day it's like.
Breathing you just gotta gets to the point where it's
just you don't even think about. It so you know
he's getting there already and helps continue to get.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
THERE K Club that was also asked About, Dabo sweeney
And cade flying back To Club nick's church In texas
after a research spring.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
Practice, yeah so he we spoke at my church's night
and it was it was really.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
Cool we, actually, well you, know coach sweeney schedule was,
crazy SO i think we probably put it out in
the air about two years ago and we finally did
it like a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
Ago but, yeah it was. Awesome there Was i'm going
blank on how many people were there over three thousand
something like. That there's THERE'S i might be. WRONG i
might need to double check, that but it might have been.
More but it was really. Cool it was really. Cool but,
yeah we had we had Meet it was on A,
tuesday so week we had meetings and.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
You, know we were we were able to go out
there and fly out there for the night and then come.
Back but with The Reggie pleasant came And aka And,
Tracy so it was really.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
Cool it Was it was probably one of my favorite
Things i've.
Speaker 4 (32:45):
DONE i did not think that during my time At
CLEMSON i would go To austin twice With Coach, sweeney
that that that was not in the you know idea
realm WHENEVER i can. IT i didn't think that was
gonna happen so in a few, months, uh you, know
a whole.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Space but it. Was it was really. Fun it was really.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Fun it was.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
AWESOME a lot of people got, saved which is. Amazing
my pastor actually went To.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
Clemson Brad, thomas he actually went To clemson and he's
a Huge clemson. Fan has been a really good mentor
to me In austin and At Austin. Ridge and they
do they do A Warrior, night like a Men's Warrior
night every, year and they've Got colt McCoy and The
undertaker and a bunch of people That i've come and,
spoke but this, one, LIKE i, mean it out did
all of. THEM i think we had like twelve hundred
(33:32):
more men showed up than any Other Warrior knight. Ever it.
Speaker 3 (33:36):
Was it was really.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Cool so but, yeah definitely we brought the idea probably
like two years, ago finally made it.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Happen so so there you.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
Go pretty cool story About Dabo sweeney making his way
out THE K Club nicks church there In, Austin. Texas
hard to believe his pastor at his church is A clemson.
GRADUATE i, mean that's kind of a small world connection for. You,
again we'll hear some more FROM K clubnick coming up
(34:06):
in just a little bit in our number, two because
LIKE i, said he did meet with the media for let's,
SEE i think about twenty four minutes or. So so
some good conversation With clubnick to get you geared up
For clemson's spring game In Death. Valley and, again you,
KNOW i don't know what there really is to take
(34:27):
away from. It quite, FRANKLY i don't like maybe there
was a time in this business WHERE i felt differently about.
It But i've been around these games so many times
it's really hard for me to, Go, YEAH i think
it's gonna you're gonna get a. LOT i think you're
gonna get a lot from. THIS i don't know that you.
ARE i don't know that you. Are we did get
(34:49):
a chance to hear From Tyler, BROWN. Tj, moore And
brian westco a trio of wide receivers At. Clemson, Also
Antonio williams went long form with the media well this past,
Week so we'll hear from a couple of those guys
in our number. Two all, right quick breat we'll come.
Back we'll Recap clemson's victory Over Georgia southern last night
in baseball over In North. Augusta stay with. Us final
(35:12):
segment of our number one the. Show the shakesare South
Land Clemson sports. Talt we'll hear From clemson baseball Coach
Eric backache again as The tigers go down To North
augusta and face off With Georgia southern last night at ten.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
Eight victory for The Clemson.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
Tigers, there we'll hear From backage in just a few.
Minutes but kind of a weird thing with, That clemson
going To North augusta and. Playing it's something they've done
a couple of. Times as a matter of, FACT i
think the first time they did, it IF i remember,
(35:55):
correctly like they were still painting the. Stadium we had
we Had Brad, owens who was then the title was
director Of Baseball. Operations i'm not sure what this title
has shifted to, now But Brad owen was still with
The clempson baseball. Program we had him on And i'm,
like so give us some insight in the. Stadium he's, like, Well,
swanee they're painting some of the stadium as we. Speak
(36:19):
the paint is not dry in that new. Venue but
The tigers do head over or did head, DOWN i should,
say To North augusta last, night a ten eight victory
the final score in a neutral site contest against The
Georgia Southern. Eagles and what a cool venue For clemson
(36:40):
to get to play in and For north and For
Georgia southern to have a great spot for those two
teams to. Connect Colin, Priest tristram, mccladdy And Josh payno
all had multiple RBIs in the. Ballgame payno was also
one of the players or d player that got to
speak with the media after the. Game clempson just puts
(37:00):
out a very short snippet of aeric. BACKACHE i did
ask about that the other. DAY I i don't know
why they don't do a little more with, backage but, Anyway.
Uh The tigers get the victory AT Srp, park their
first game down there since two thousand and twenty. One
clympson is now twenty seven to. Five they took advantage
(37:22):
of five walks in the first inning to score two,
runs and then mcclatty reached on an infield single with
two outs in the third inning.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
To score a.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
Run then in the fourth it Was Luke odin's two
out single off second base played two runs to Trim
clempson's lead back to three to. Two in the top
of the, SIXTH i think it Was Luke gaffney who
had A rbi ground out that Push clipson's lead up
to four to. Two Then priests followed with a two run,
single given The tigers a six to, advantage But Georgia
(37:53):
southern would respond with two runs at the bottom of
the sixth to make it six to. Four then in
the eighth, Inning payno hit a three run triple to
extend The tiger, lead And Andrew chuffo followed up with
a suicide squeeze that scored painto from. Third Joe allen
gets the. Win he's three to zero on the, season
(38:14):
pitching one and two thirds innings in, Relief Lucas malstead
pitched zero in two thirds innings to record his ninth
save of the. Year The, tigers of, course AS i
mentioned now the gates here today On, wednesday they will
travel To california for a matchup On friday that will
(38:35):
start at nine Pm eastern on THE Acc Network. EXTRA
a little late Night clemson baseball On, friday. Folks nothing
like the old nine O'clock nothing like the old nine
O'clock eastern start. Time if you like college, baseball you'll
(38:57):
get your chance. Calls it's gonna be going late late
On friday night for The tigers as they traveled To
berkeley to take on Cal, anyway after the, game we
did get a chance to hear From clemson head Coach
(39:20):
Eric beckich And Josh. Pino here's what those two guys
had to Say Following clipson's ten eight victory over AT
Srp park In North.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
AUGUSTA i you, Know Talon bell Pitched graight for three.
Innings you, know we saw how the rest of the game.
Speaker 6 (39:37):
Went we ended up winning ten, eight but talent giving
us three shoutout innings was. Huge you, know we had
our ups and downs throughout the middle of the, game
too many free, passes but we also you, know found
a way to have two big, innings had a three
spot in a four spot and you, know no bigger
hit Than Josh pino's face is clearing triple in the
(39:58):
eighth followed by the squeak By.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Choufho so.
Speaker 6 (40:02):
You, know we we we did enough, there uh too
to come away with the.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Victory but certainly wasn't. Perfect but sometimes good teams.
Speaker 6 (40:10):
Have to win a little bit, ugly and that's kind
of what tonight.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Was and and he never wanted to give.
Speaker 6 (40:15):
Up crooked number in the ninth, inning but you, know
we just had to had to go To malstat there
to finish it out and close it. Up so you,
know fortunately for, us he was able to do that
and we were able to hold on for a ten eight.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
Win but all in, all will take.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
It we're never going to give any any of them,
back and, uh you, know getting.
Speaker 6 (40:34):
Ready to look forward to getting better and get ready
to go play cal this.
Speaker 3 (40:36):
Weekend go. Attack the team was.
Speaker 7 (40:38):
Great we grinded out a win against a good. Team
WE i, mean we just grinded out in. Vats the
guys ahead of me saw a lot of pitches they
walked and just following the coaches approach and trying to
get a good pitch to. Hit BUT i was just
trying to get on, base trying to have a good
at bat and past the past of the ton.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
Of choufo behind.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Me That's Josh payno again and takes the victory down
at down At North augusta Against Georgia. SOUTHERN i don't
know why that's so hard for me to. Say but
As eric backet you, Mentioned clemson gives up nine runs
in the ninth excuse, me four runs in the ninth,
(41:16):
inning Hush, man we gotta get to the top of
the hour.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
Break I'M i am a mess.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
Here gives up four runs in the ninth inning to
Cut clemson's lead from ten to four to a bit
of an uncomfortable ten to eight win for The. Tigers
but a, win as coach, said not gonna give him.
Back it was a win, nonetheless And clemson now Will
i'm assuming they'll board a flight tomorrow to head out.
(41:45):
WEST i wonder If William qualkinbush is gonna be on
that trip or is that gonna Be Don munson that
makes the journey west With Clemson tiger baseball for that.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
GAME i don't.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Know i'll Have toby text qualk during the, break uh
and see the press release of who's going to be
on the call isn't out, yet BUT i mean that's
a long trip for a college baseball. Game i'll be
intrigued to hear kind Of eric back at his feedback
after the. Fact you know what was the turnaround like
(42:18):
to go all the way to cal and then? Back
you know what what was the grind on that?
Speaker 2 (42:24):
Front all?
Speaker 1 (42:24):
Right our number two around the band stay with us.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Each time For Clipson Sports talk With Luwton.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Swan it is our number. Two that's drivetime right here
(43:16):

on swineing out with you on A wednesday afternoon, again
The Show That shakespare SOUTH lande brought you in part
by our good friends over At say it with me,
Now mets plumbing seven three two, drip drip. Drip you
know the jingle seven three to two. Drip That's mets,
(43:37):
plumbing all? RIGHT i Texted qualk during the. Break we'll see.
Speaker 4 (43:44):
What he.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
Says is he gonna be on the call out In
california as The Clemson tiger baseball team takes their twenty
seven to five road show out to cal for a
weekend series nine O'clock eastern The star time for game
one On friday.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
Night, yep.
Speaker 1 (44:07):
That's gonna take some getting used. To as for The
Atlantic Coast conference and the overall standings in, Baseball Florida
state currently the top team in the. League The seminoles
are twenty four and four. Overall that is the best
(44:27):
winning percentage overall in the. Conference they are also seven
to two in league. Play clemson currently sits second in league.
Play they also have the second best winning percentage in the.
Conference The tigers are twenty seven and, five six and
three in the. League Georgia tech is third IN acc.
(44:50):
Play they are twenty three and six. Overall they are
eight and four in the Atlant Coast. Conference which is
an identical point sixty sixty seven winning. Percentage after, that
in league, play you Got, Virginia, Tech Wake, forest And.
Duke they are all seven and. Five louisville AND Nc
(45:14):
state are five and four IN acc. Play North, Carolina,
virginia And cal are all six and six in the.
Conference stanford And Boston college are five and. Seven Pitt
is currently three and, Six miami two and, seven And
Notre dame at the bottom of The Atlantic Coast conference
(45:36):
in baseball with a two and ten record in league.
Play so that's what The Atlantic Coast conference currently looks
like in. Baseball but For, clemson they're going across the
country To. Cal AND i was looking at the baseball
schedule earlier. Today you, know it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (46:00):
How quickly.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
This baseball season has gone. By AND i don't know
if you all feel this same, way BUT i, mean
it feels like the pedals to the medal. Here you're
gonna come out of this series Against cal this, weekend all,
RIGHT a midweek game next week Against, georgia excuse, Me Gardner,
(46:22):
WEBB a three game series at home Against, STANFORD a
three game series at home Against. Louisville you're gonna Host
georgia three game series At, raleigh no midweek. Game the
following week you'll be Entering may three game series At Florida.
(46:44):
State you'll play the game At coastal that you owe
them after hosting The chanticleers and losing to them last.
Week you'll Host duke and then go To.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
PITT i, mean.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Baseball season has got what five weeks six weeks, left
and then obviously you get into THE Acc, tournament LIKE
i think that begins On may, twentieth and then THE
NC Doublea tournament will push us Into. June and, honestly
by the time all of that, happens you, know we
used to talk about the downtime in the dark days of.
(47:21):
SUMMER i gotta, say it's gonna be THE acc kickoff
before we know. IT i, MEAN i kind of feel
like maybe maybe it was ANOTHER i, mean it's not
Like climpson made a lengthy run in THE ncaa, tournament
(47:42):
but another run to THE NC Doublea tournament maybe kind
of made this baseball season go by. Faster LIKE i don't,
know because there have been so many years in my
memory Where clemson basketball hasn't been. Good you kind of
knew you weren't going to THE Nc Double, tournament and
so maybe you turned your attention a little bit sooner.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
To the baseball.
Speaker 1 (48:06):
Team but a week, ago AS i mentioned here when
we were talking the qual a week, ago you crossed
over the halfway. POINT i think That Coastal carolina game
was essentially the midway point of the, Season and here
you are one of the top ten teams in the
country by pretty much every college baseball pull this out.
(48:30):
There but for the life of, me how we got
to this far into the season? Already AND i also think,
too right with the Expanded Atlantic Coast, conference it also
feels like it's going by faster because maybe you're not
playing some teams you've been a little more accustomed to,
(48:52):
playing you, know when you Play stanford and col and
you're not play in Say North carolina.
Speaker 5 (49:04):
And.
Speaker 1 (49:07):
Miami maybe the names on the jerseys don't have the same,
punch so you kind of eyeball on your scheduling going,
well but you didn't play those other teams that maybe
carry a little more weight just in name. Recognition but,
Yeah i'm kind of kind of stunted how quickly this
(49:30):
has all gone, By.
Speaker 2 (49:32):
At least to me.
Speaker 1 (49:34):
A zero three four or five oh zero zero eighty
six text line phone. Line, again you could be a
part of the program, anytime any, place anywhere on our
website That's Clemson Sports talk dot com and of course
follow us On twitter At Clemson, Sports, instagram TikTok we
are where you are again the big topic earlier. Today
(50:00):
we talked about this in our number One Clemson university
announcing yesterday the introduction of alcohol alcoholic beverages being, sold
and a lot of people thought it was a fourth
Of july.
Speaker 4 (50:16):
Deal it is.
Speaker 2 (50:17):
Not it is.
Speaker 1 (50:19):
Legitimate the one THING i didn't see mentioned is what
will be sold at these different kioska because here's the. Key,
like in my, MIND i thought, Beer but when you
(50:41):
look at the details on, it under the identification, portion
it Says clemson staff and vendors may not serve, beer,
wine or liquor to anyone under the age of twenty. One,
now WHAT i do not know at all About South
(51:03):
carolina games and about other. Games is there liquor being
sold and wine being sold or is it just.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
BEER i.
Speaker 1 (51:15):
Didn't even consider that wine and liquor might be a
part of. It but, anyway here's a portion of WHAT
i said now are number one about, it and it
will begin On. Saturday so if you thought it was
In April fool's, joke On, saturday you'll be able to
confirm whether it was or wasn't by whether there is
(51:39):
or isn't beer being sold During Clemson spring. Game and,
again AS i am aware and as it has been
presented thus, far this is. Accurate BUT i was talking
to a couple of people about, it AND i saw
people on social media. Commenting some people feeling like it's about,
(52:03):
time you, know, finally and then there is this other
group that's, like do not Want there's also.
Speaker 2 (52:15):
A couple of factors that certainly go into. This number.
Speaker 1 (52:18):
ONE i think most notably what you're talking about is
the financial boon that this can bring to the university
and to the athletic. DEPARTMENT i don't think there's any
question that there will be a significant amount of alcohol
sales in the.
Speaker 2 (52:38):
Stadium AND i think that.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
When you look around the, country whether this was the
thing that you really, want you really Wanted clemson to
never do when you're one of just Three power for
schools that offers neither the sale of alcoholic beverage in
this venues nor accept sponsorship revenue from alcoholic beverage. Advertisers
(53:13):
that's a pretty slim. Group, now to explain that, further
that doesn't mean because WHEN i first read, IT i, thought,
well it's clip to one of the only schools that
doesn't serve alcohol at the. Games not, necessarily it's not
one of three that don't serve. Alcohol they were one
(53:34):
of three that either didn't serve alcohol or have alcoholic
beverages as a revenue. Sponsor you, know this brought to
you by Mic ultra or by Bud light or. Whatever,
now the other aspect THAT i do want to get
(53:54):
to are the people that would Say i'm not interested
in my kids being around alcohol on at college football
game day or in the. Stadium and, listen as a
guy who's raised two, KIDS i, MEAN i guess raising
we're not done.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
Fifteen and.
Speaker 1 (54:17):
TWELVE i remember going to the, games AND i remember
the kids being young and in the stands and.
Speaker 2 (54:27):
All of. That and there's not alcohol really.
Speaker 1 (54:29):
Around you other than the things that people maybe sneak
into their boots with a mini bottle or. WHATEVER i,
mean let's not pretend that there's not alcohol in the.
Speaker 2 (54:41):
Venue there is in addition.
Speaker 1 (54:46):
To, that AND i think this is where it got
a little squirrely for a lot of, people is that
in the, boxes the, suits.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
In the club, areas there's alcohol in the.
Speaker 1 (55:02):
Venue AND i, think, look if you had a zero
tolerance policy for alcohol in the, venues in all of the,
suites in all of the club, areas the club, levels
if it was a zero tolerance deal across the, board
(55:26):
you probably have something to stand. On if you, said,
WELL i don't want that in the. STADIUM i don't
want to be a part of. It but if you're, like,
well BUT i didn't have it in my. AREA i
didn't have it in my. Seats and THEN i pose
(55:47):
the question of, well would you accept tickets to sit
in the suite with you, know certain.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
Individuals would you go to a?
Speaker 1 (55:59):
Suite would you be interesting in a year of being
in a suite In Death valley instead of in your typical,
Seats and you would say most of you would, go,
yeah of, course put me into The defender. Suite, Swan,
Swanny i'm all about. It and if you get in
(56:20):
there and there's, alcohol you're gonna Go wait a, second, no, no,
NO i insists put me back in the sun one hundred.
Speaker 2 (56:25):
Degrees let.
Speaker 1 (56:27):
ME i like it within my family AND i get
baked like a piece of.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
SAUSAGE i like. THAT i like sweating profusely and being under.
Speaker 1 (56:42):
Hydrated so if you look at it from that, STANDPOINT
i think there are some of you that would, go, hey, no, no,
NO i don't want that in the. Stadium AND i
would say to, you, well it's in the, stadium and you, say,
well it's not around. Me AND i, say, well would
(57:02):
you like to sit in a. Suite and if you said,
Yeah i'll take those, Tickets, swanny well guess what you're
gonna be around.
Speaker 3 (57:07):
It so.
Speaker 1 (57:09):
Therein lies the crux of it's around, you and it's
gonna be, there not to. Mention AND i do Want
clemson games to be fan, friendly family, friendly you know
all of that. Stuff but you can't convince. Me if
you said to, Me, SWANI i just don't want my
(57:30):
kids to see people, DRINKING i would say to, you
how do y'all walk in the? Stadium do they wear a?
Blindfold is it like pin the tail on the? Donkey
as you're walking? In there are people drinking everywhere everywhere
around the. Stadium, now if if you stay home because
(57:54):
you don't want to be around people drinking and you
don't want your kids to see, THAT i have no.
Speaker 2 (57:59):
PROBLEM i respect that you can do.
Speaker 1 (58:01):
That but let's not pretend that the only place that
your child would see a beverage of some description is
inside the stadium while you're out of the. Tailgate so
that's some of my thoughts on it, all and, again
we'll see how it all ends up playing. Out we'll
(58:22):
see what takes place at the you, know at the spring,
game and get feedback.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
From people on that. Front you.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
Know the other thing THAT i thought was a little
bit strange about the. RELEASE i haven't been to A
clemson baseball.
Speaker 2 (58:39):
Game maybe you?
Speaker 1 (58:39):
Have are they were they not already serving out beer
for that beer? Garden because if you, noticed the release
talked about baseball and how baseball would could stop serving
(59:01):
after the seventh. Inning but this was this was the
first time THAT i recall hearing anything about like an
actual release.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
About the beer.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
GUARD i, mean we heard about the beer, garden but,
like was this just some finalized paperwork that needed to get.
Done LIKE i really don't know that on that front.
Either but AS i, mentioned a lot of people not
happy about, it a lot of people happy about. It
it's one of those things THAT i think really splits
(59:34):
The clemson fan base right down the, middle partially because
we're in The bible belt right and there's a lot
of disdain for alcohol sales.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
At Death.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
VALLEY i know a lot of, people AS i, mentioned
aren't keen on the. Idea, again WHEN i was crunching those,
numbers it was like twelve dollars for a beer based
off of some of the numbers that other.
Speaker 2 (01:00:09):
Schools.
Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
Have people, say and it's. Terrible clemson is really Not clemson.
Anymore it's really not about The clemson. Family it's about
The clemson, money you, know and it is it's. All
it is all about the. Money some people, Saying, LOOK
i get. It older people just don't like, change and
their first response to change is to push back against.
IT i think we all kind of have that feeling
(01:00:34):
about the nil and the transfer portal.
Speaker 2 (01:00:37):
Issue but you, KNOW i think.
Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
When you put the price high enough, again it becomes
an economic. Deal AND i have a feeling that like
let's Say clemson were to have a. Butt let's say
let's say they sold the beers for two, dollars, right
like old, school but like back in the, day you're
gonna probably have a lot of people that are going
to be getting intoxicated and it's going to be. Bad now,
again you could drink all you want outside of the,
(01:01:05):
stadium let's not, forget but and you can come in
as inebriated as you want to. Be BUT i think
what will happen, is let's say those beers were at two.
Dollars just for my argument, here they would, say all, right,
well let's bump them up to six dollars this coming,
season and we'll see what that does to the number
(01:01:26):
of people that are, overindulging and then take it up,
further you, know until you hit a number where you're
making enough in sales and you don't feel like the
offset cost of individuals ruining the experience for those people
around them is that. Great but what people who would
(01:01:47):
flat out say, NO i can't have this need to
remember is that being by somebody that is intoxicated or
who throws up or whatever happens is impossible to. Avoid
even if you said there is no alcohol sales allowed
(01:02:09):
in the, stadium because there is tons of consumption taking
place outside of the, stadium so it can't really be
avoided either. Way you're just not minimizing, it and THAT
i think. Bothers some people stay with. Us we'll come.

Speaker 4 (01:04:07):
Grow AND i think that he's just taking more and
more steps and more strides uh into you, know being

so you, know really proud of. Him he's made some
huge strides To Spring.

Speaker 4 (01:04:35):
Sure we'll have to see whenever sumer workouts come. Around
but now he sees a great athlete and got a great.
Arm and but since he got, here his work ethic
is that's what you. Need when you show up and
and you don't know, anything you you can't just show
up acting like you've.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
Arrived and he has not done.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
That he showed up ready to learn and asking coaches
what to, do asking strength what to, do getting next your,

KNOW i wish you, Know i've never lost a spring.
Speaker 4 (01:05:16):
Game pretty proud of, that SO i wish that there
was a, game BUT i, guess you, know if there's
not a true keeping, score maybe There WELL i don't
know how they're doing, it BUT i think it'll be
fun to have my guys out, there you, know at
least be running running out there with the guys That
i've been running out with in spring. Ball that'll be
awesome and not time to split split up as. Good
but you, Know i'll run out there with. WHOEVER i,
(01:05:36):
think you, know just spot the ball and let's go.
Play you, know that's not really up to, Me so
just kind of excited to go play.
Speaker 1 (01:05:42):
Football Club ning also was asked about if he was

were club.
Speaker 1 (01:06:04):
Nit the other thing, is, look this is his final
spring game and your career goes in the. BLINK i
know it's hard to believe for guys when they get.
Started but it really. Does H here's Club nick talking
about this being his final spring game as a player In.
Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
Tigertown, yeah it's.
Speaker 4 (01:06:17):
Wild it's, wild flies by man flies. By So i'm
excited to get out.
Speaker 1 (01:06:25):
There Club knit was also asked about how meaningful this
senior year and this season will be uh to him
and some of the other guys as.
Speaker 4 (01:06:34):
Well, yeah just just THANKFUL i Chose. Clemson you, Know
i'm just so thankful THAT i chose. HERE i think
that there's it's it's weird to look at my class of.
Quarterbacks they're they're all over the place and they're bouncing,
around and you, know no shame on. Them it's just you,
know guys are bouncing around all over the, place transferring.
(01:06:55):
Everything and to be in a place WHERE i didn't
even feel pressure THAT i had to leave or you,
know to get kicked out or you, know not kicked,
out but you, know, hey you, know nobody wants to leave.
Here i'm just so THANKFUL i chose. Here and that's
really What i'm thinking. About it's tough to be anxious
about a season when you're just thankful where you're. At
So i'm just THANKFUL i chose.
Speaker 2 (01:07:16):
Here Kay.
Speaker 1 (01:07:17):
Club it was asked About Dabo sweeney's comments after the
first scrimmage of the, spring, say and he Thought kate
had a trip To cabo on this.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
Mine he apologized to, Me now it was it's, just you,
know just, down just didn't have a great. DAY i
got about two or three drives and that's no, excuse
but just didn't have didn't have my best.
Speaker 3 (01:07:36):
Day it's just what it. Was show up the next
week and you, know got right back after.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
It so you, KNOW i feel Like i've had a
really good spring and made some really big shrides and
that day just wasn't my best, Day So Kay.
Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
Club it was also asked, about you, know his reps
during the scrimmages and how that's.
Speaker 4 (01:07:54):
Gone just got to take advantage of every one of, them, Man,
LIKE i think that's, it AND i think that's what
it is for, everybody whether you're getting twinn reps are two.
Reps you, know that's WHY i courage you, know my
quarterback room is, like you gotta take advantage of every
single one of, them and you can't be upset with you,
know if you only get two of them and you're
upset with the two drives that you got or you,
know the two plays that you, got you know you.
Got you gotta show out on those two, plays and
(01:08:15):
that's what it. Is and you, know you don't have
to go throw a touchdown on those two. Plays you
just gotta go do your. Job that's What that's what quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
Is just managing the.
Speaker 4 (01:08:22):
Game and that's just kind of how the game. Is
you gotta manage. It and you, know some stuff's out
of your hands sometimes and some stuff is in your.
Hands you just got to take advantage of every. Rep
that's kind of been my. Mentality it's just game rep
every time out of. There i'm Not i'm not out
here practicing them's game. Reps and that's what it's gotta,
be because you, know you get, better you're getting, worse
and that's that's what it. Is And, salid we're going
to get ready for a game right, now so it's
(01:08:43):
you might as well play like you're going To.
Speaker 1 (01:08:46):
The final thing FROM K club, today he was asking
about going up Against Tom allen and a new defense
and what that's been like for.
Speaker 3 (01:08:52):
Him, YEAH i love, it you, KNOW i love.
Speaker 4 (01:08:54):
IT i think THAT i think it's fun as a
quarterback Because i'm getting a new. Challenge you, Know i'm
not having to go go against the safety defense for four.
Years i'm getting to show up and not know what.
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
They're doing at.
Speaker 5 (01:09:04):
All you.
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
Know it's not Like I'M i show up And i'm
scouting him on day one of practice or. Whatever LIKE
i just show up AND i have no idea what they're.
Running it's just.
Speaker 4 (01:09:12):
Reactionary so it's you, know it's it's a fun little
twist for me and fun to you, know see the
game in a different way and, funny go get something,
different and you, KNOW i LOVE i love what they're
doing on that side of the, ball and it's.
Speaker 1 (01:09:24):
Exciting so there you, go a much more, mature confident
k Klubnick off of the heels of a really good junior,
season looking forward to seeing what he does this. Year
he's still you, know when you look at, him it
was a time he like a deer in. Headlights but
now he seems comfortable with the, media seems really in
(01:09:45):
control of of just his emotions on the, field and
and grew up in a hurry and he had to
and it's gonna be you, know what he does and
how he performs this season will be a big determinating
factor of how far this clips A TIGER footba team
can Get in twenty twenty, Five stay With, Us Lawton
swan back with you on A wednesday afternoon The show
(01:10:08):
That shakes the South land SO pti part of The
interruption With Michael wilbond And Tony, kornheiser which has been
on the air for, many many. Years always liked that.
Show don't get to watch it much because my shows.
On during that, show we talked about the fact That
(01:10:28):
clemson's situation with the alcohol sales came out On april
Fools day and people thought it was possibly In april
Fools day joke From. Clemson, well the guys ON pti,
YESTERDAY i don't know if you saw. This if you're
listening to this, show you probably. Didn't but they went
with a segment and basically it was called it was
(01:10:51):
on the torpedo bats In Major League, baseball and the
tweet they put out said BREAKING mlb is reportedly banning
the torpedo bats after backing them just too days. Ago
is baseball right or? Wrong and the two guys went
back and forth for about three minutes debating the validity
(01:11:12):
of getting rid of these bats after they'd already been,
used and you, know how do teams get the wins
and losses and everything from, it you, know straightened up or.
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
Whatever and.
Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
AS i was watching that, segment BECAUSE i saw it
come across My twitter, ACCOUNT i was, like, man that
is so weird that baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
Would would do this BECAUSE i would, assume.
Speaker 1 (01:11:40):
AND i haven't done all the research on the torpedo,
bass BUT i would assume that The New York yankees
and every team they've used them did the due diligence
to make sure that these things were legal and that
they fit every parameter that existed for a baseball. Bat
but my thing would be if you took it to
(01:12:00):
the standpoint of what if what If Major League baseball said,
no you couldn't use it at this point in the,
season you, know agains very early in the, Year my
question would become why.
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
If you.
Speaker 1 (01:12:17):
Why would you get rid of something like IF i
think about baseball and kind of the old style that it,
is you, know kind Of america's, pastime a little slower
paced game than what the fan is normally accustomed to
in this day and, age if you had something that
was generating interest and excitement in the, Fans like remember
(01:12:40):
when When sammy se Said martin maguire had their run
that re energized fans off of the heels Of Major
League baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
Strike and here is a scenario where you've got these.
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
Bats that have everybody talking, about you, know what guys
are doing at the, plate how dudes are raking unbelievable
just being so.
Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
Successful and in a game where.
Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
They had to add the pitch clock and everything to
increase the pace of, play and you had teams that,
were you, know shifting so much so that The Major
League baseball had to, say, wait we got to change
the way we do. This you can still kind of
finagle it to your advantage if you want, to but
you can't do it the way you could, before where
(01:13:31):
you're just ripping the whole field away from a guy
that ninety five percent of the balls he hits or
more goes to left. Field and what bothered me about
that when that was happening in, BASEBALL i remember sitting
right here with you guys and, saying how can you
call yourself a pro if you can't hit? Apo how
(01:13:52):
are you a pro if you lack the ability of
a team taking a major shift on you one direction
and you can't just poke something the other. Way it's
impossible for you made absolutely no. Sense but then WHEN
i was watching This April fool's joke and they were
(01:14:14):
saying that Major League baseball is going to get rid
of these, BATS i, THOUGHT.
Speaker 2 (01:14:18):
I was, like that is.
Speaker 1 (01:14:19):
Crazy and then when they got to the end and
it Said April, FOOLS i was, like, well thank, goodness
because baseball needs a shot in the, arm and not
a literal shot in the, arm not a steroid injection
like it had in the, nineties.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
But it needs something like.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
THIS i think the other thing, too That Major League
baseball no longer has is the big name star the
way it once felt that they had with the say hey,
Kid Willie mays And Mickey mantle and that Era jolt
And Joe DiMaggio and, like there was a time WHERE
(01:15:00):
i think the league was small, enough but the players
were big, enough and kids across the country were drawn
to a smaller amount of markets and greater, players more
talent collected in one area versus now where there's thirty
semi teams are spread out all over the country and
free agency is an issue where you've got players that
(01:15:22):
go left and right and you don't know where anybody is,
anymore and there are big names out.
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
There don't.
Speaker 1 (01:15:30):
Let me sound like there aren't big. NAMES i mean show.
Hey atani is as big name as there's been In
Major League, baseball probably in my, lifetime because of his
ability to not only you, know the power that he's
got at the, plate but when he also was, pitching
how good he was in that aspect of his game as,
well the fact that he's an international, star like there's
(01:15:52):
a lot to like about, him but.
Speaker 2 (01:15:55):
That this game needs. More it needs more than it.
Speaker 1 (01:16:04):
Has provided the fans for, years and they've tried to
figure it, out and lo and, behold a little change
in the shape of the bat has possibly done more
than anything to reinvigorating the excitement that fans have because
(01:16:24):
one thing that is probably you, know it's a. PROBLEM
i think everybody would like to go and see a
no hitter or a perfect. Game that would be, amazing
but nobody wants to go watch two pitchers duel for
(01:16:48):
eight innings with nobody scoring a run or getting on.
Base fans want the excitement of base hits and home
runs and run. Scored it's great if you get there
and one guy does have a no, hitter that would
be because you go, MAN i saw a no. Hitter
the reality is until the eighth or the ninth inning
of a no, hitter you're the. Snoozer you're at a
(01:17:11):
boring ball. Game people want, runs people want the long.
Ball and WHEN i saw, that WHEN i Saw cornhizer
and them arguing about, IT i, thought no, way no,
way they're getting rid of this bat. Already thank, goodness
that was just An april fool's. Joke all, right quick,
break we'll come. Back we'll put a bow on the.
(01:17:31):
Show the Shakespare South lane right here On Fox Sports
radio fourteen hundred and that on The iHeartRadio app right after.
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
This stay with, Us.
Speaker 5 (01:17:39):
What have you done for me? Lately it's a fair.
Question just don't lose sight of the bigger. Picture don't forget.
History looky for us At. Clemson the answer to the
questions what have you done for me?
Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
Lately and what have you?
Speaker 5 (01:17:58):
Done always the.
Speaker 4 (01:18:00):
Same we.
Speaker 1 (01:18:06):
Win final segment on The wednesday, Afternoon William Hawking bush
(01:18:55):
did hit me. Up, yes he will be in col for.
That clemson bayaseball game. Again the start time On, friday
nine O'clock eastern gonna be a late night for all
You tiger baseball fans if you stay up and watch
that on THE Acc network. Extra that was the other
thing that caught my attention this week WHEN i was
(01:19:22):
looking At clemson's, schedule all the games on THE Acc network.
EXTRA i, mean, again chance to be critical here OF.
Espn they're gonna throw college baseball in your face when
(01:19:43):
we get to The College World. Series but this, season.
Speaker 2 (01:19:50):
All, right as a.
Speaker 1 (01:19:51):
Whole here Are clemson's baseball games.
Speaker 2 (01:19:59):
That were either on.
Speaker 1 (01:20:02):
THE Acc network or another outt LIKE espn, two et.
Speaker 2 (01:20:09):
Cetera All, right.
Speaker 1 (01:20:13):
The South carolina game On february twenty eighth was on
THE Acc. Network and, look IF i miss, one you're
welcome to pop me on my.
Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
Wrist there was.
Speaker 1 (01:20:32):
The sunday game Against Wake, FOREST i think was on
THE Acc. Network clemson's game Against stanford On april the
eleventh will be ON. Espnu clipson's game Against stanford On
(01:20:53):
saturday And Sunday april twelfth and thirteenth will be on
THE Acc. Network The tigers will Play georgia ON ESPN
u On april twenty. Second they'll PLAY Nc state ON
acc network On april twenty, Fourth AND i believe that that's.
(01:21:18):
It seven total games on channels that your grandparents know
how to.
Speaker 2 (01:21:29):
Get every other game.
Speaker 1 (01:21:36):
Is on a streaming service that you have to. Use
and so if you think, about, okay, well there are
sixteen teams in THE, acc maybe not sixteen playing? Baseball
was it fifteen in the conference playing? BASEBALL i believe,
(01:21:57):
no sixteen With Notre. Dame, okay just had to recount.
That so sixteen With Notre. Dame we've done this routine.
Before syracuse does not play. Baseball so sixteen teams playing
baseball in the. LEAGUE i guess if you, know if
you're complaining as, well does everybody? Play does everybody play
(01:22:17):
seven games on THE acc network if that's the, case
or on ESPN, U and then maybe the time just doesn't.
Fit but, man for programs Like clemson In Florida state
and the other programs that really embrace, baseball it's very,
hard very hard for me to justify how few of
(01:22:42):
these games are on the big major. Networks AND i
understand the ESPN u AND acc network aren't the big
part of The Atlantic Coast Conference baseball family or. Whatever
(01:23:06):
let's just look at a random. Day let's look at
today across THE acc this, weekend let's see how many
games are all in the big. Channel So, Friday april,
fourth THE Acc network will Have duke At North. Carolina
THE acc network will Have Wake forest In Florida. State On,
(01:23:28):
saturday there is not a game on THE acc, network
everything's On. Extra and On sunday THE acc network will HAVE.
Speaker 2 (01:23:40):
Nc state In. Virginia so on a, weekend The Atlantic.
Speaker 1 (01:23:45):
Coast conference teams play a total of twenty three ball
games by my, count and three of them are broadcast on.
Television let's check.
Speaker 2 (01:23:56):
One more week just for.
Speaker 1 (01:23:58):
Fun let's push it back a week away from you, know,
obviously this weekend is a big weekend with the final
four all. Right Next, Friday Stanfording clemson play ON. ESPNU
i mentioned that a minute, ago but that's.
Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
It On, Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
Wake In North carolina are ON espn, Two clemson And
stanford are on THE acc, Network and then On, Sunday
stanford And clemson are on THE acc. Network four games next.
Weekend clemson's in three of. Them so that's four out
of twenty three.
Speaker 2 (01:24:34):
Games so was that?
Speaker 1 (01:24:35):
Total seven out of what DID i? Say twenty three both?
Times so seven out of the twenty six ballgames on the.
NETWORKS i just don't. Understand what are they? Showing blows my.
Mind all, right we'll be back. Tomorrow until, then it is.
Always i'll take care now and Go.
Speaker 2 (01:24:52):
Tigers
