NBA Finals tonight, eight thirty two to two series heading
back to Oklahoma City, the thunder favored by nine and
a half. A storming comeback pun intended in Game four

(02:12):
to equalize the series with a strong finish in the
fourth quarter. We'll talk with William Qwalkinbush about his pacers
and the you know, the fact that they had they
had Oklahoma City on the brink and they let them
off the hook. They let them off the hook. You

(02:32):
can't let teams off the hook. If there's anything we've
learned in sports, never let a team team off the hook,
and quite frankly, never let a better team off the hook.
And I think that might be what happened a couple
of nights ago. Plus, we've got College World Series conversations
to dive into. Hey, hey, now you're an All star,
get your game on, go play the Coastal Carolina, Chanta

(02:57):
clears two and oh start out in Omaha, and they
have put themselves in the driver's seat in their portion
of the bracket. And that's where we will begin today's conversations.
We will talk about Omaha in the College World Series

(03:18):
and all of the shakings that have gone on out there.
Plus a little update for you hearing our number one
on the Rocos Jello shot bar not bar, not bar board.
It's a bar, It's definitely a bar, But the Rocos

(03:39):
Jello shot board.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
You fellas been dorm a bit of boozing. Have you
sucking back on Grandpa's old cough medicine?

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yep? Might be some of what's going on out in Omaha,
for sure, and certainly the Chanta Cleer is making a
lot of noise. So Friday, you may recall Game one,
Coastal Carolina and Arizona faced off and the Chanticlears won
that matchup seven to four, putting Arizona in an elimination

(04:11):
game that would take place yesterday on Sunday against Louisville.
More on that one than a minute. In Game two
on Friday, Oregon State, the eighth seed, beat Louisville four
to three, putting Louisville in that elimination game against Arizona,
which took place yesterday, And in that matchup on Sunday,

(04:34):
Louisville scores six runs in the bottom of the eighth
inning they were trailing three to two. Not saying Arizona
was in a great spot by any means, but certainly
you had to think that the Arizona Wildcats were feeling
pretty good about how things were shaken out, and then

(04:57):
in a blink it got ugly in the wrong direction.
And kudos to Louisville for just finding away, just scratching
and clawing, scoring seven runs in the final two in

(05:21):
their final two at bats. They didn't have to bat
in the bottom of the ninth inning, but taking advantage
of being that home team in that game, and they
come over with a huge eighth inning and they take
a eight three victory, eliminating Arizona. Tough to say two
in barbecue when you've made it this far, but that's

(05:44):
precisely what that was for the Arizona Wildcats, who of
course got past North Carolina to secure their spot. But
then in game two yesterday, it was thirteenth overall seed
Coastal Carolina beating Oregon State six to two in the nightcap,

(06:09):
and more importantly for the Chanticleers, now putting them in
the driver's seat in their side of the bracket. They
are fifty five and eleven. They open with a huge
three run first inning. They expanded their lead to five
to one in the fourth inning, and six to one
in the fifth, and then they would go scoreless in

(06:32):
the remaining They're remaining four at bats but would only
yield one more run to the Oregon State Beavers and
Coastal Carolina sitting in a great spot out in Omaha.
Here's what it sounded like when they took their early
three to zero lead on a basis loaded double, allowing
three runs to score.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Hold into the gap toward the right center with Tault
on the reach, Bo nine scores, Bartho right behind him,
Mitchell to the plate, and it's a basis claring double
for Kobe Thorndyke the year. But he has saved his
best here down the stretch. And how about going out
and hooking a breaking ball on the outer third of

(07:18):
the plate, just outside the stretch of East and Tall.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
And with that, Coastal Carolina fans couldn't celebrate in a
sense of, you know, feel like the game was over
by any means in the top of the first. But
what a great start for them in that contest yesterday
against Oregon State at charsh wild Field. They would hold
on and again they are sitting pretty for a chance

(07:46):
to get to that three game series for the national championship.
Could Coastal dare I say, wait for it, Could the
Chanticleers become two time national champions And quite frankly, I
don't know what that would say about this program in

(08:06):
terms of their stance and stature in the state. I
might could make an argument given the longevity of the
South Carolina program and the Clemson program. Clemson's lack of
championships takes them out immediately, but one might could make

(08:31):
an argument if Coastal does indeed go out and win
another national championship, that not only are they the best
baseball program in the state of South Carolina over the
past decade, we might be able to make an argument,
based on top lines, that they're the best baseball program

(08:51):
in the history of the state, better than the two
time national champion game Cocks as well. That's a possibility
that people could certainly argue at that point. But again,
a lot of baseball left to be played. That's the
way things have shaken out thus far. And what I'll
call the top side of the bracket. Louisville by virtual

(09:14):
of their win over Arizona yesterday in Oregon State and
they're lost to Coastal yesterday those two teams will face
off tomorrow at two pm. All right, so an elimination
game between Louisville and Oregon State tomorrow Tuesday at two pm.

(09:36):
The winner of that game will face Coastal Carolina on
Wednesday at two pm on ESPN. Both games, by the way,
are on ESPN, and then there will be a game
on Thursday, if necessary, between those same two teams. If
Coastal were to get beat however, if the Chanta clears win,

(09:58):
they would advance. Now in the other half, i'll call
it the bottom half of the bracket fifteen seed overall.
UCLA beat Murray State six to four in Game three
on Saturday, and LSU topped Arkansas four to one Saturday evening. Arkansas,

(10:20):
remember the favorite to win the national championship, LSU was
in the second most likely odds. Of course, that naturally
would flip flop, with LSU winning game one and putting
Arkansas in the loser's bracket. In a matchup against Murray
State earlier today out in Omaha, number three, arkets on

(10:43):
Murray State facing off. That game got underway at two
pm on ESPN, but of course I got recording while
my coffee was still warm, So I can't tell you
anything about that game today. I won't have an update
on Murray State in Arkansas for you. Loser leaves town
match on that one. That's an old school wrestling reference

(11:05):
for everybody out there. Then, of course, on the flip side,
this evening, at seven o'clock, the winners UCLA and LSU
will face off for the right to take control of
the bottom half of the bracket. Now, the winner of

(11:26):
today's game between Arkansas and Murray State will face the
loser of today's game tomorrow at seven pm. And then
on Wednesday, the winners or the winner of tomorrow's matchup
on the bottom half of the bracket will face the

(11:48):
winner of tonight's game between UCLA and LSU. So, still
a whole lot to be done in the College World Series,
but one thing is unmistakable at this point, and again
that's Coastal Carolina has positioned itself well. The twenty sixteen

(12:09):
national champions are sitting in a great spot with a
couple of games potentially remaining and maybe just one for
the Chanta Clears before venturing into the Championship series out
in Omaha. Now for your Rocko jell O shot, update,

(12:31):
I was drinking. I wish I could remember what game.
I wish I could remember what game that SoundBite came from.
When we got that one on the show many many
years ago. I think that was was that O line? No,

(12:51):
that wasn't O line. That was was that Roger? I
can't I can't remember. A lot of different people have
called the show over the years. Not many, though, have
left a better sound bite. Now, remember the all time
record out of Omaha was sixty eight thousand, eight hundred

(13:11):
and eighty eight jello shots purchased by LSU. A lot
of those were purchased by the owner of Canes. Canes,
the chicken restaurant similar to Zaxby's, similar to Guthriees. By
the way, we got a Guthrie's here in town in Lexington.
Hit me up Guthries. I wouldn't mind advertising for that

(13:34):
chicken business. Believe me, it's good stuff. But we don't
have a Canes around town. Guthries is a lot like Knees, though.
But the owner of Canes is a big LSU fan,
and I think he put a pretty big dent. Todd
Graves purchased six thousand jello shots at one point at

(13:56):
the previous twenty three run series where LSU not I
know there was one after that twenty twenty four. But
for LSU when they set the new mark back in
twenty twenty three, part of that was boosted by Todd Graves.
But as for the Rocos Jello Shot Challenge Board, I

(14:20):
keep up with it via their Twitter account, which is
apparently the official Jello Shot Challenge board. And currently here's
what the standings at last release, I should say, maybe
I shouldn't say currently, but at last release, here's what
it looks like. And they are still ahead of last

(14:44):
year's total by nearly four thousand jello shots, having distributed
thirty four thousand, seven hundred and ninety seven with over
fifty thousand donations to food banks already. And they're still
in the first weekend because we've got games today right
that conclude Saturday's matchups. However, here's the way things stand,

(15:08):
and it doesn't look like a crowd funded board is
going to be able to support Murray State enough to
beat LSU. The Bayou Bengals are firmly in control, with
thirteen thousand, five hundred and fifty two Jello shots purchased

(15:31):
in second place is Murray State the racers with six thousand,
four hundred and twenty. Arkansas checks in in third with
five thousand, five hundred and eighty three Coastal with four
thousand and twenty four jello shots purchased. Then you've got

(15:54):
Arizona with fifteen thousand and ninety nine. You've got Oregon
State with I've excuse me, fifteen hundred and ninety nine
for Arizona, Oregon State thirteen hundred and seventy five, Louisville
thirteen hundred and fifteen, and in last place yet to

(16:14):
put up one thousand, UCLA with nine hundred and twenty
nine jello shots purchased. So Rocos twenty twenty five jello
shot challenge, ahead of schedule from last year, but nowhere

(16:35):
near the number that would be necessary. You talk about
having to have a big week. Boy, LSU at thirteen
thousand would have to have a huge week to reach
their sixty eight thousand, and Murray State still needs ten
times the amount they currently have in order to not

(16:55):
just challenge, but to well, I guess yeah, it would
be the challenge. It would be to surpassed sixty eight,
but they are in second place. The racers and depending
on what happens with them today and maybe that'll help.
What we tend to see with the College World Series
is once you're eliminated a La Arizona, once you're eliminated,

(17:17):
what tends to happen is your jell O shot purchases
dry up. So and when you win here here's the
other thing too, right, when you win, your jell O
shot purchases tend to increase. So that's where we sit

(17:37):
at the College World Series. Again. The big story though
out of the state of South Carolina as the Coastal
Carolina Chanticlear's advance after defeating Oregon State, and again it
was a huge three run first inning Colby Thorndyke with
a double, a base emptying double that allows Coastal Carolina

(18:03):
to not just live another day at the College World
Series as if they were on some brink of elimination. No,
it allows them to take control. And now, at least
in their side the bracket, they're in control and they've
won twenty five consecutive games. I think they're fifty five
and eleven, and they do not appear to be slowing down.

(18:27):
And I think most people, especially in South Carolina. Excited
at what Coastal Carolina and the Chanticleers are doing it.
I'm just thankful I'm saying the name right because did
you hear their head coach Kevin Schnall after the game yesterday?
Here he is.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Everybody say it with me.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Shanta clears, Shanta clears, not Shant clear, Shanta clears. Get
it right, people, Coastal making some noise out in Omaha.
The teal is for real. There we go. We'll see
how it all works out for them over the next

(19:06):
few days as they are squarely in control. By the way,
don't forget our number two of the show. Today, William
Qualkinbush joins the program. We didn't get a chance to
catch up with him. Last week. Qualk was doing the
VACA thing here in the middle of the summer. That's
what we do at times. Speaking of our VACA, I
don't know what it's gonna look like around the around

(19:31):
the timeline of the fourth of July, because I think
July fourth might be on like a Saturday, excuse me,
on a Friday. But nonetheless, I think we're looking at
taking for this show, which typically we do take that
week off. We're looking at take in a different week off.
We're gonna push it back a little bit into the summer.
Got a Disney trip plan with the wife and kids,

(19:51):
so keep that in mind. It'll probably be just before
the ACC kickoff. All right, quick break, We'll come back
with more on a Monday. Clemson Sports of the Show
of the Shakes of South coming up tonight eight thirty
on ABC. The NBA Finals Game five, Indiana and Oklahoma City.
What a series this has been back and forth, but

(20:11):
maybe more impressively, the fact that the Pacers have to
sing it too too to me is the storyline of
the NBA And again it was two to one, which
is even more impressive. Is in my opinion, that's the
storyline I should say of the NBA Finals, because I
truly did not give the Pacers a chance one eleven,

(20:36):
one oh four, though the equalizer for Oklahoma City thunder
bringing this thing and stealing back home court advantage. But
taking things back now to Oklahoma City outscoring Indiana. That's
kind of been the story of several of these games.
Is fourth quarter and Oklahoma City outscored Indiana thirty one

(21:02):
to seventeen, overcoming a ten point deficit. Indiana had an
eighty six seventy six lead with twoh eight remaining in
the third quarter, and Oklahoma City just continued to chip
and chip and chip away until the point where they

(21:22):
took the lead one oh four, one oh three and
never relinquished the lead. Shay Gilgess Alexander going crazy in
the fourth quarter. A lot of people questioning, like the officials,
and did gil Just Alexander travel on a play where
he stepped on the foot of one of the Indiana defenders.

(21:45):
I mean, look, these are bang bang plays. They happen
in a blink when we watch them in super slow motion.
Some people go, oh, I don't know, look like he
traveled there. But gil Just Alexander with thirty five points
on twelve of twenty four, shooting ten of ten from
the free throw line, And you can make the argument
that the season was on the line for Oklahoma City,

(22:08):
and really the story of Oklahoma City was kind of
on the line in that game, because if the thunder
lose and go down three games to one. I said
here on the show last week, I thought they were
of the two teams, they were, in my opinion, the
team that could overcome a deficit like that. I felt

(22:32):
like they were the one that could win three straight.
But imagine the storyline as a whole. If a team
that went sixty eight and fourteen, Now you think about
the greatest teams in the history of the NBA. You're
talking about the seventy two and ten Chicago Bulls, the

(22:53):
seventy three and nine Golden State Warriors. This was a
sixty eight and fourteen Oklahoma City Thunder team and they
did They lost one game, one game in the regular
season to a team from the East, and having lost
two games to Indiana and one on their home floor

(23:17):
in Oklahoma City, like all of a sudden, if you
if you go down three games to one and lose
this series, or even still, I mean, if they do
end up losing the series, the blemish on the level
of success that they had early in the season is
going to be immense. Or I shouldn't even say early
in the season, right throughout the season who they are

(23:41):
supposed to be or how they were perpetuated. They don't
have a key loss, like they didn't lose Shay gilg
just Alexander. They didn't lose chet Holmram, they didn't lose
Jalen Williams like if you, if you are as good
as they've been in gild, just Alexander rolls his ankle

(24:01):
in the Western Conference Finals and he can't play, and
you get beat. You you get remembered for losing, but
you also get remembered for losing a big player. And
when they put out the documentaries about NBA Finals teams
or teams with great regular season records that didn't win

(24:23):
at all, you get mentioned. But then you get the
the little asterisk that says, but remember gil just Alexander,
their star player, Shae gil Just Alexander got hurt. But
when you don't have that, when the storyline is just
you got beat, Oh Dad, is tough to overcome. And

(24:45):
in this series, the Thunder had just gotten beat. The
Pacers come from behind and win Game one one to
eleven one ten. Oklahoma City answers with a convincing one
to twenty three one seven, winning Game two. The Pacers
storm back much like Game one. I mean, think about

(25:09):
remember what I said just a few minutes ago, and
we'll look at this in a second fourth quarter scoring.
But in Game three, much like Game one, the Pacers
storm back. And then in Game four it was the
Thunder who come roaring back. Look at fourth quarter scoring

(25:29):
in this series. In Game one, Indiana, who won by
a point, outscored Oklahoma City by ten thirty five to
twenty five in the fourth quarter. In Game two, the
Thunder had control throughout. They were outscored, however in the

(25:51):
fourth quarter thirty three thirty by the Pacers, but it
was a one twenty three to one oh seven game.
I mean that game was out of control by the half.
Then in Game three, Indiana wins one to sixteen, win
O seven. They outscore Oklahoma City thirty two eighteen in
the fourth quarter, and then in Game four, Oklahoma City

(26:16):
nearly flips it. Instead of thirty two to eighteen, it
was thirty one seventeen Oklahoma City. So in three of
the four games, the team that has dominated the fourth
quarter has come away with a win, and Tonight's matchup
at eight thirty on ABC from Oklahoma City, with the

(26:37):
Thunder favored by nine and a half, will go a
long way likely to determining who wins the NBA Championship.
If the Thunder win Game five, I think it's their championship.
If they lose, I think still there's still a chance
that could win it. But one thing is starting to

(26:59):
come to come to fruition. I would say double Ow
said a week or so ago, right when this finals
got started, he said, swanee, I think it's going seven games.
I think the NBA's rigged.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Can speak a little louder, but I'm afeing lafone.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
And double Ow might be right, not necessarily that this
rig but then it's going seven games. Stay with us,

(28:05):
right again, Getting closer and closer to the kickoff of
the college football campaign, we'll all William Qualkinbush a little
bit about that when he joins us coming up around
the bend. As we are past the midway point in June,
it's hard to believe kickoff for the college football seasons.
You know, we're about a week from it begin two

(28:25):
months away. Iowa State in Kansas State kickoff on August
to twenty third. That's the first game at noon over
in Dublin, Ireland on ESPN. There's President of State in
Kansas that day, Sam Houston and Western Kentucky and Stanford
at Hawaii. Just sort of an appetizer in all day
affairs that'll take you from noon to midnight basically. But again,

(28:49):
seven days from now, you'll be talking about two months
from the kickoff of college football, and it happens rather quickly.
But you know, the ACC kickoff isn't too far off
as well, And that to me is when we really
get into the mix of the college football season and

(29:13):
what it's all about. And I know for a lot
of people, the eyes of Texas and the eyes of
college football are on arch Manning and Brian Kelly had
some comments recently on or about arch Manning talking about

(29:37):
Garrett Nusmeyer and saying that Nussmeyer has seen it, he
knows what he's going to get. Manning is extremely talented,
but he's got to go do it. I'll take the
guy that's been in the SEC and seen what it
looks like. And Brian Kelly got a lot of brushback
on those comments, and a lot of people, you know,

(30:01):
kind of feel like arch Manning is going to be
the top quarterback in college football. But even when Inside
Texas put out a a poll on the question who's
the better quarterback, Garrett Nussmeyer came out on top of
fifty eight point five percent by comparison to forty one

(30:22):
point five percent for arch Manning. And I think the
real problem at this point is that arch Manning just
doesn't have a ton of experience. And he sat and

(30:45):
didn't what's the right word. You know, he didn't complain
about sitting. You know, Clemson recruited him, and I can
only assume that had he been at Clemson, arch Manning
would have sat. But looking at two seasons in the book,

(31:12):
just ninety five total passes, he's still very young and
very unproven, and so like, I get it if you
want to lean in and say, okay, look, we're not yet,
We're not going to anoint him just yet last season

(31:35):
sixty one of ninety for nine hundred and thirty nine yards,
nine touchdowns of two interceptions. And his game is much
more than just his arm. As a matter of fact,
that was one of the things that Texas did utilize
him for, but not often. Twenty five carries this past season,

(31:56):
one hundred and eight yards and four touchdowns. But arch Manning,
while people believe that Texas may very well be the
favorite to win the national title with him at quarterback,
still has to go through the schedule as a starting

(32:17):
quarterback andmprove that he's capable of leading Texas to those highs.
And far be it from me to dismiss a kid's opportunity.
I certainly don't. I mean I we talked about tough
schedules the other day, and he's going to open up

(32:41):
at Ohio State College game day environment noon kickoff on Fox,
the Big noon Kickoff. It's a huge rematch of their
semi final at the Cotton Bowl in the College Football
Playoff last season, which Ohio State won twenty eight to
twenty four. But he's got to go into that environment

(33:02):
in Columbus, improve it, and then he'll get a couple
of games to get his speed underneath him. They'll face
San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston all at home,
and then they get into Southeastern Conference play at Florida
versus Oklahoma and a neutral site at Kentucky at Mississippi
State versus Vanderbilt. They do have to go to Georgia

(33:26):
versus Arkansas and versus Texas. A and m fairly lightlifting
through the SEC by comparison to some of those teams
that we talked about last week. But in the sense
of the opener and whether or not arch Manning can

(33:49):
be the guy that leads Texas to a national championship,
I mean that's still very much up in the air.
So I get it. A proven guy like nust I
get the comments. Now, some people did clap back on
social media and say, I'm still waiting on and this
is fair, I'm still waiting on Brian Kelly to prove

(34:10):
he's an SEC coach. I get the clap back one
hundred percent. I get it. But from the standpoint of, hey,
can arch Manning lead Texas to a national title? I
think it's possible, no doubt. I think it's possible, But

(34:34):
I can't like take that step forward on June the
sixteenth and say, yeah, I think he's gonna be a
better quarterback than guys that have gone out of there and
done it. And I can't even say he's going to
lead them to a national championship, maybe to the college
football Playoff, but beyond that, I think it's still very

(34:55):
much up in the air to see who Arch Manning
is as a player at the collegiate level. Final segment
of Our winnerun of the Band, Keep It Locked, final
segment of Our One coming up. William qualkin Bush joins
us an hour number two man. We talked earlier about
the NCAA tournament and Louisville's crazy bottom of the eighth yesterday,

(35:16):
and I don't I don't have any love for their
head coach Dan McDonald, just because of some things with
McDonald and Clemson a year ago up in Louisville. But
here's McDonald trying to fire up his team as they
were trailing against Arizona yesterday. You get Harley, you better,

(35:45):
the ball is going and play. We're not waiting coming out.
So the audio there a little bit garbled, but in
a loser leaves Town match, Louisville representing the Atlantic Coast

(36:08):
Conference has a huge sixth a huge sixth run bottom
of the eighth to take a three to two disadvantage
to an eight three lead and put Arizona on the
brink of elimination and their head coach Damn McDonald. Louisville
head coach Damon All was fired up, saying we're not

(36:30):
waiting till the ninth inning. It's four innings to take
the game over, and they got it done before the ninth,
telling this Teamy bear shorten up the bat, you better
be ready. This offense is gonna take over the game.
We're putting the ball in play. I like it. I
like it. Also, by the way, over the weekend, did

(36:54):
you guys see this stretch? And I know it's the NBA.
I get all that, but did you see Caitlin Clark
in her return to Indiana hit three threes in thirty
nine seconds. This is a wild exchange. And they're not

(37:16):
just they're not even threes that are close to the
three point line. These are logo threes.

Speaker 4 (37:26):
And Countingham is down behind the play, but they've gotten
Caitlin Clark to fire away from three.

Speaker 1 (37:34):
Huntingham just now getting up.

Speaker 4 (37:36):
And she stayed down near the free throw line. On
the other end, I'm just coming back from an ancle injury.
And then Johanna's very movie, two players with incredible art,

(37:57):
well back and forth. We go Clark with the three,
Johanna's answered, then Caitlyn again. She's calling for the ball
from Cunningham. Clark another long three.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
I'm not kiddya. She's eight to ten feet behind the
three point line. On those three pointers. It was insanity,
Like if Steph Curry did it, you'd go Holy smokes.
I mean, it was an incredible stretch. And she's begging
for the ball on that final shot, like she comes
down the floor. Her teammates got the ball in her hand,

(38:36):
and Katelyn Clark comes down the floor and she's like,
you can't read her list, but you know she's going
to pass me the ball, pass me the ball, give
me the ball. I'm open. And she follows her almost
all the way down to the free throw line. Then
she has to back back out about eight feet and
the ball gets passed back across to another teammate and
that ends up in Katelyn Clark's hands and she takes

(38:58):
about two maybe a little crossover in between her legs
and then bang knocks down another three. Just an impressive,
impressive display by Caitlyn Clark. And for WNBA fans, she's
she is a big benefit because of her ability to

(39:21):
shoot like that. The league has issues with interior post
play and poor interior post play that bothers a lot
of people miss layups. As a matter of fact, one
of the other stars you know in the WNBA that
people talk about and follow lot's Angel Reese, partly because

(39:44):
of her rivalry with Caitlyn Clark. Well, you know, Angel Reese,
people have hit her up with this new term called
a me bound where she misses layups so poorly and
she ends up getting the re bounds. And you know,
there seems to be a jealousy between Angel Reese and

(40:07):
Caitlyn Clark because of the attention that Caitlyn Clark gets
and reese average averages. Excuse me, a double double with
like ten points to ten rebounds, which is I mean, listen,
I don't want to besmirch a double double, but I
mean you watch her play and you look at her stats,

(40:31):
and it's not a The game doesn't pop when she's playing.
When Kaitlyn Clark is playing the game. Pops like Caitlyn
Clark makes people want to tune in to watch regardless

(40:54):
of like a poor performance. Kaitlyn Clark, the shots that
she hits turned heads and look, Angel Reese has some
poor performances in her bag, an OH of eight game,

(41:14):
a two of seven game where she scored four points
and two points, And Kaitlyn Clark is not gonna always
have spectacular games, but she's gonna take and potentially make
some incredible shots that regardless. You just look at the

(41:38):
distance from which she's shooting the basketball. And I don't
think anybody wants the game to become just people taking
threes from thirty two feet out or thirty feet out,
but it's sure fun to watch them go in versus
layups that don't. And that's where I think Caitlyn Clark

(41:59):
makes people turn their attention to watch her play because
she's shooting shots that nobody else is currently shooting. There
will be more girls that will be able to shoot
it because of Clark and her impact on stretching the game.
Much like Steph Curry and I welcome those changes. Our two.
William qualkin bus joins us stay with us. It's time,
Lord Clipson Sports Talk with Luwton Swan. It is our

(43:00):
number two. That's drivetime right here on the show The
Shakes the south Land, Clemson Sports tal Log. Swanny know
with you. William Qualkinbush set to join the program in
just a minute as always to show The Shakes the
south Land, brought to you in part by our good
friends over at METS Plumbing. Seven three two drip drip,
drip drip. You know the jingle seven three to two drip.

(43:21):
That's mets Plumbing, mets Plumbing dot com, that's the website.
And again thinking of METS Plumbing for being a part
of the show. But without further ado a week off
at the beach, he's back in the saddle and he
joins us on a Monday afternoon. William Walkin Bush Qualt,
Welcome back man. How's the vacation, Swanny was great?

Speaker 5 (43:38):
Man, first beach vacation with an almost one year old,
and I can safely say that I'm learning that vacations
with kids are not vacations. They're just part of their
opportunities to lose sleep. So but other than that, it
was great to be around family and uh play a
little golf and get a little beach time. So it
was he was nice. I'm glad to be back though.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
Yeah, there's nothing like packing though when you've got a
kid that age. Am I right?

Speaker 5 (44:02):
Uh what did we not pack? Uh?

Speaker 6 (44:05):
You know, like I thought my.

Speaker 5 (44:06):
Golf clutters are gonna get clipped, and I was like, uh,
I'm already scheduled to play twice, seven over, but we're
gonna make away like if we gotta you know, if
we gotta take nine instead of ten big stuffed animals
and maybe five backs for the baby instead of six,
we don't get my golf clubs in there. Uh. So
it's the luckily it all fits. It was fine, but yeah, man,
it's like every time you think you're done, it's like, well,

(44:26):
we need seven other things, and uh it can It
can be quite a stressful process.

Speaker 1 (44:30):
William Qualkinbush with us on Mondays again. We'll talk about
the College World Series. We think, we'll talk about the Tigers,
and we're gonna get these thoughts on the NBA Finals
today while he's hanging out with us. But first and foremost,
let's talk about coastal and make sure you say it right,
qual because you don't want to get in trouble, the
Shanta Clears putting themselves in the driver's seat in their
portion of the bracket. Man, what a couple of games

(44:53):
for them out in Omaha.

Speaker 5 (44:54):
You know, I come my bass there and say I'm
gonna chant go shut How about that? This team is
remarkable the way they play. I watched them twice in
person Swannee, and most recently I went down to Conway
and I watched them play in May against Clemson. And
Clemson played some really good teams this year. They played Georgia,

(45:14):
they played Florida State, they played Louisville, who is in
Omaha right now. They played Duke on the Eater like
they have seen some things.

Speaker 6 (45:23):
Coastal Carolina is the one team that when.

Speaker 5 (45:25):
They lined up against Clemson, I thought, this team is
better than Clemson in every phase. They have better pitching,
they better hitting, They were on the bases very well.
They're just better, just flight a better, not like better today,
not like that. There was no equivocation. They were better.
And I say that because I do think people slept
on Coastal. I'll admit I did when you've got a

(45:45):
long win streak the way they did. But a lot
of your opponents are not just Sun Belt teams, but like.

Speaker 6 (45:50):
Lower to middle sun Belt teams.

Speaker 5 (45:51):
You know, they weren't playing Lopayette every week, you know
what I mean. They were playing some teams that were
down to the bottom of the league. It's impressive this
week anybody, But you still are sort of wondering. But
then you watch the team in person and you go, Okay,
there is something to this voting. The catcher is incredible.
He's the best catcher I've seen this year in college baseball. Again,
best catcher i've seen in person. I think he's the

(46:13):
best catcher in college baseball. He's gonna be a first
round draft pick probably. Guys man suff a lot of money.
They put the ball in play. But the thing that
I think is the most astounding about Coastal and the
reason that I've been telling people since that game in
early May that they're the best Coastal team I've ever seen,
is the pitching. And not just the front line pitching,

(46:34):
but it is.

Speaker 6 (46:34):
The middle league.

Speaker 5 (46:36):
It is the back end axe throwers in there who
are just absolutely darting the zone with bbs.

Speaker 6 (46:42):
It is stuff mixed, It is handed mixed, it is
arm angled mixed.

Speaker 5 (46:45):
It is a beautiful pitching rotation and the way that
they have played, there's nothing fluky about any of that.
But I mean, did they get a break or two
to go ahead and beat Arizona. Yeah, I mean Arizona
I thought played pretty well. They also got Deacon Dunkes
a little bit early in the game.

Speaker 1 (47:00):
They did get.

Speaker 5 (47:01):
Dunk Arizona a little bit later in the game. But
that's how they play, that's who they are, and they
were able to sort of make it. They were able
to sort of make it work right in that in
that first in that first that first contest. So in
my opinion, this is a team that's that's playing well.
I have to win the national championship, not just because
they're on a heater, but like I was telling people,

(47:23):
I don't know how far they're gonna go, but this
team is better than the one in twenty sixteen that
I also saw with my own eyes and what not. Surprised,
but like that they didn't profile like a national championship contender.
This team on paper looked every bit the part, and
then you watch them play, they look every bit the part.
As I'm watching the first three days, I'll mind you
you know, you've got to still a couple of games

(47:45):
or I guess one game two teams to play tonight, right,
But the bottom line is they're playing better than anybody
else in Omaha right now, and if they win it,
it just shouldn't come as a shock if you're familiar
with how they play.

Speaker 1 (47:57):
All right, hot take alert here qualk Well, maybe not
a hot take, but I'll give you a chance for
a hot one. The program was founded in nineteen sixty three.
If the Chanticleers were to go on, they win their
second national championship, two of which would have happened in
the past decade. I think there's a legitimate argument to
be made it's the best baseball program in the history

(48:19):
of the state of South Carolina.

Speaker 5 (48:21):
Uh you know what, possibly possibly correct, possibly correct. I mean, look,
here's the thing I feel like in baseball, things are
so wild in the postseason and so sort of ram
in the postseason that you almost have these three distinctive
these three distinctive narratives to sort of try to prove Clinton,

(48:44):
South Carolina, Coast of Carolina why they're number one. Clinton.
It would be decades of reaching the pinnacle of the sport,
not winning the national title, not even playing in the
championship series. But when you get to lahab how many
times a particularly in like a twenty year span, but
I guess about a lot of seventeen years span from
ninety four to twenty teen or whatever it is. When

(49:05):
you're there like every three years, then your synonymous in
that period of time. It's a lot like Florida State
and college football, where they will are like the Atlanta
Braids in the nineties and two thousands in the National
League East, where they don't win it every year, but
you're synonymous with greatness within the sport because you're consistently.

Speaker 1 (49:23):
Doing the thing.

Speaker 5 (49:24):
So I think that's Clemson's argument down Carolina's argument, and
like they made it a few times earlier in history, right,
but they had such a three year season, and I'm
gonna call it a heater. They have such a three
year heater that it has defined them to the point
that like their drought in OHM is almost as stark
and their follow up is almost as stark as Clemson

(49:44):
in terms of the longevity standpoint. But I think they're
still getting a little bit of mileage, like naturally in
terms of perception from titles that were won fourteen years ago.
That's ridiculous. I mean, that's difficult to justify that they
had that. It's a little bit like college football, where
like South Carolina twired in college baseball, their pinnacle was

(50:05):
like ten eleven twelve in college in college baseball, rather
in college football at their pinnacle was like maybe ten eleven,
twelve thirteen, maybe even just ten eleven twelve. There's three
year pinnacle and it roughly coincided, which is crazy to me,
but that would be South Carolina. May you want back

(50:25):
to back national titles, that's huge. People can't just say that.
And then you've got Coastal that legitimately didn't advance out
of a regional from the twenty sixteen national championship until
this year. So you can't do the consistency thing. You
can't do the longevity thing because the win, the program
is founded and all that stuff. But in terms of
reaching the height of the profession and the height of
the sport, they've done it with two different head coaches

(50:48):
in two different eras, which Clincy can't say in South
Carolina can't say. So if you're asking me how I'll
argue about Coastal that would be my argument there, and
in terms of prisoner of the moment, I don't know
a lot of people will push back against that.

Speaker 1 (51:00):
We'll see how it all shakes out. A lot of
work left to be done, but they have put themselves
in the driver's seating, their portion of the bracket again.
William qualkin Bush with us on Twitter at qualk Talk
every day noon until three o'clock. Out of Bounds with
Qualk and Ben one oh five to five the roar
in the Upstate. All right, Qualk, let's shift to the
NBA real quick, because I know the Indiana Pacers are
near and dear to your heart. They had a chance

(51:21):
a couple of nights ago to maybe put a stranglehold
on the finals. I felt like, of the two teams,
the one that has, you know, the most likely chance
to come back from a three to one hole would
have been Oklahoma City. Now that it's too two, I
feel like, all of a sudden, it's kind of flipped
to where the Pacers are the one that really has
the mountain to climb. Kind Of what are your thoughts

(51:43):
on following this? I know you love your Pacers, and
how do you see tonight's matchup playing out.

Speaker 5 (51:49):
Well. I was talking to somebody the other day who
is a Thunder fan, who pointed out to me that
this is virtually identical to how the Nuggets series wins,
and that certainly ended in the Thunder winning in seven games.
I mean, here, this is the bottom line. The Pacers
stole Game one. Okay, they stole it. They were trailing
three quarters. They did what they do right, they came

(52:11):
from behind. They stole it. Now, it doesn't mean that
they didn't play well, but I thought the Thunder should
have won that game. They didn't win that game until
it gave the Pacers a chance because that they've been
just so good in the postseason. Now, the interesting part
of this is he sort of felt like that when
the Pacers won Game one, the stat that people pointed out,

(52:32):
it's like, well, Oklahoma City hasn't lost back to back games. Okay, great,
they win Game two. Well, then you go Game three
in Indian they go, hey, the Pacers haven't lost back
to back games in the postseason. So to me, what
this does is, now you're going into Game five, where
the Pacers gagged at a Game four I thought it
was the worst offensive basketball they played down the stretch
of a game. Really maybe other than one time it

(52:55):
was the game against the Knicks. What was that Game
three against the Knicks where they gagged that one away
where they were so they were so lousy down the
stretch they gag away a double digit lead and you
felt like you'd let the Knicks sort of back in
the series for for just a moment, I feel like
the Pacers coming into Game five. I've got to get
back to what one of my colleagues calls the beautiful

(53:16):
game where they are moving the ball. It's not, you know,
like I told somebody, Tyri Saliburton and Myles Turner holding
hands thirty feet from the basket for three quarters of
the shot clock. You're not winning that way, running like
seven ballscreen actions with Mos Turner and Tyre Saliburton trying
to take people off the dribble. Where's Pascal Siakam in
an iso? Uh? Where is your adjustment with Aaron Nesmith

(53:39):
who was so good on Jalen Brunston get switched on
to shake Gildes Alexander, where actually Andrew Nimhart has been
much much better defensively on him. How do you adjust
if you're Indiana to make sure that doesn't that doesn't
burn you. How do you keep that seeing out of
the foul line, which they did great until the second
half of Game four. I mean, you know a lot
of people were saying that maybe Scott Foston was doing that.
I'm not gonna argue with that, know, Bill Simmons causing

(54:01):
the extended for a reason. I do think the Thunder
are in the in the driver's see in this series
because they sole a game as well, and they are
the better team. But if there's a team you just
talked about it, if there's a team to come up
to three to one, if there's a team that can
go on the road and win a Game five with
the way that they play, with the coast that they have,
I think the Pacers have a great chance to do that.

Speaker 1 (54:21):
To you make a great you make a great point.
I talked about that last week. I think Rick Carlisle,
given his experience, given his success that he had during
his time in Dallas, and as good as he was
during his first stint with Indiana Qualk, I think he
is a decided advantage. And it'll be interesting to see
what they have prepared tonight, because it does feel like

(54:43):
this is must win right for Indiana.

Speaker 5 (54:45):
Yeah, I think so. Now I would also I would
point this out. Game sevens dramatically favorite the home team,
but game sevens are also weird. There's a reason that
basketball playoffs are decided in series, and the thing you
can have some randomness that you sort of make up
for later, like when lou Dord makes seven threes or

(55:06):
whatever he did in Game number two, five threes, whatever
it was, when Indiana has multiple bench players just absolutely
going at TJ McConnell and Ben Mathern go nuts in
game three.

Speaker 6 (55:15):
When you have this sort of variance over the course of.

Speaker 5 (55:17):
The seven game series, it's evens out. Well, when it's
even at three to three, that means all the randomness
that you've been trying to combat on both sides for
six games it all comes to a head in game seven,
where if you get some randomness in your favor, you
can turn the tide. Like I said, I think the
Thunders should be favored to win this series. But honestly,
before game foy this is crazy s Finny. Before Game four,

(55:38):
I was an illegal gambling stake and I was just curious.
I looked up some betting lines the Pacers were approximately
plus two hundred to win the series before tip off
of Game four. That is not buch much since they lost.
It's crazy nobody thought. I mean, I think relatively speaking
of the betting markets, thoughts and the Sun, that we're
gonna come back and win this series anyway. So I

(55:58):
think there's still pretty good value you on the Pacers.
And it's crazy because we were at this close and
my fingers are not far aparts wanting. We were this
close to the Pacers being three to one, and the
betting markets have them to decide whether Oklahoma City is
good enough to win three games. I think that we
are going to have three very competitive games. I picked
the thunder and seven before the series started. I'm gonna

(56:19):
stick with that. But as a Pacers fan, I'm not
counting my team out in any way, shape or form.

Speaker 1 (56:24):
On Twitter at qualt Talk, final couple of minutes with
him here today, so Qualk. Last week, Clemson and South
Carolina in football kickoff announced for noon. I don't mind
the noon start time. I don't. I don't really have
a huge beef with that like some people do. All
that you talk about your thoughts on it, but the
fact that we're hearing that in June. Quawk is the

(56:46):
thing that really raised my eyebrows and made me go,
what are we doing right now?

Speaker 5 (56:51):
You know, I truly I'm trying to figure this out.
For days, I'm sitting on the beach. I'm trying to
you know, I'm trying to let you know, let my
mind want or other things. I kept coming back to this, like,
what is the benefit? Why are we.

Speaker 6 (57:02):
Going from hey, we need until the following Sunday to
decide all these late games, thinking about how these six
day holds we got on these games down the stretch
of the year, and then the SEC just randomly decides,
you know what.

Speaker 5 (57:16):
We feel comment up in our schedule that we will
be announcing every single one of our games the start times,
the channel does nations, all this stuff that we have
control over from now to the end of the season.
Why the start contrast there? We went from zero to
one hundred on that and it just for whatever it
just I don't know, I've got your saying questions, why
why did we do so many games at one time?

(57:39):
We could have been doing that all along. What is
the benefit of the SEC doing that right now? I
did not see a quote in the release that explained it.
I didn't see anybody even trying to figure out. Maybe
no one's curious about this because we're just glad that
this happened. To your point about the new kickoffs, Look, man,
I understand I live in a different world than a
lot of your listeners. Your listeners, especially in the middle,

(58:00):
you're trying to figure out how to drive up to
the games, whether you go the night before or the
day of. You're trying to figure out losing and trying
to figure out plays and this and that, and noon
games make it hard to get there. I understand it.
To me, it's the cost of doing business. And I
have long since stopped complaining about noon games, even though
I got to get up at four thirty to go
and do my pregame show at six am. Whether it's

(58:22):
home or right, I understand this is road so it's
in the studio, bro, regardless I'm up at four thirty.
To me, this is this is about more than just
the convenience of fans. The noon time slot on ESPN
and ABC is honestly it is the best games of
the day right now. In a lot of Saturdays, the
prime time slots are for bigger brands, but a lot

(58:43):
of times the better games, the better matchups are not
neon slot. So I know, I know it ruffles stands fetters,
but like, if you want to suck at football, you
can play it not noon. But if you want to
be good at football, your conference contracts with ESPN and ABC,
then you're gonna be playing a bunch of new games.
And so I just hot style complaining about it because
I'd rather be good and wake up early than not

(59:04):
be good and nobody care and I get a little
extra sleep on Friday night.

Speaker 1 (59:08):
Final thing, qualk. I know you got a busy day
ahead of you when you look at this off season.
Obviously we've got the ACC kickoff about a month from now.
What are your top storylines or what's a top storyline
that you're looking to follow, not around Clemson but maybe
around the Atlantic Coast Conference?

Speaker 5 (59:25):
You know, I think how big is the top tier? Right?
You have Cleinson, you have Miami, you have SMU. I
think that's clear. Now where do you do any of that?
You know, some people would say it's just Clemson and
then SMU or Miami are battling for lamb to the slaughter.
But like, it's Florida State in that group? Is Georgia
Tech in that group? Syracuse's schedule gets significantly tougher? But

(59:46):
are they in that group? How much good will do
they have? Where? What do we do with North Carolina?
I think that's the biggest thing right now, is like
the Belichick saga has taken us the whole off season.
Now we actually have to look at North Carolina's roster
and figure this thing. What about Louisville? Are they in
the S and Miami group? Are they in more of
the Florida State, North Carolina Georgia Tech group? Like I said,

(01:00:08):
I feel like how these teams are grouped is the
biggest deal to me. And like I said, when people
actually stop you know, doing the days of our lives
way of framing North Carolina football instead they start looking
at the roster and trying to figure what they're gonna do.
I feel like that's when we start getting really serious
about football. And then you know, what are the popular
upset spots that other people see on Clemson schedule? Louisville

(01:00:32):
Georgia Tech I think are two popular ones. But who
on there surprises you? Who on there can give Clemson
to kicking the teeth. I'll be interested to find that
out in a few weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:00:41):
Up in Charlotte, Qualt, be good, my man, have a
great day.

Speaker 5 (01:00:44):
Thanks one of the year as well. I was gonna
be with you.

Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
There you go. That's William Qualginbush again on Twitter at
qual Talk every day from Newton until three o'clock. Out
of bounds with Qualk and been on one oh five
to five. The roar in the upstate. Yeah, the ACC kickoff, Man,
it'll be here before you know. And what's interesting about
it again as always, you know, you're talking about a
contingent of media members from around the country. Now with

(01:01:07):
SMU in the mix, the additions of cal and Stanford,
you're getting people from all over the United States talking
about the Atlantic Coast Conference. I think you certainly, you
know you sprinkled in New England when you added Boston College,
but now that you do add Bill Belichick as a

(01:01:28):
head coach at North Carolina, I think you not only
sprinkling more of those individuals in the Boston, New England area,
but a new broader audience for the league from the
standpoint of, hey, what can this all time great NFL
coach achieve? And what does his level of success look

(01:01:50):
like at the collegiate level after he has been I
don't want to say marketed, but as he has kind
of earned the marketing maybe the right way to put
it of being one of, if not the greatest and
most successful head coaches in the history of the NFL.
So a lot to cover on that front. All right,
quick break, We'll come back with more as we take

(01:02:10):
a look at the history of Chanticleer Baseball when we return.
Rocking and rolling along with you on a Monday, Clemson
Sports Stall, don't forget if you're up in Tigertown about
our friends at Alumni Hall on the corner of campus
on College Avenue in downtown Clemson. Go check them out today.
It's Alumni Hall Roll you're officially licensed Clemson merchandise, hats,
T shirts, tailgate gear. Check out their hat wall. Don't

(01:02:33):
forget about that while you're there. And remember if you're
a Climpson of student, faculty, or military, remember you get
ten percent off when shopping in store at Alumni Hall
or you can shop online. And if you go through
our website to get to Alumni Hall, we'll get a
little bit of support back from them. When you make
your online purchases. It's Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop,
and I want to encourage you not just Tiger fans.

(01:02:54):
There are a ton of different schools under the Alumni
Hall umbrella. And so if you go to just Alumni
Hall dot com, Alabama, app State, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, East
Tennessee State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan State,

(01:03:18):
Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee, UCF, Virginia,
Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Western Kentucky. All of those schools
are part of the Alumni Hall team. You can buy
for your friends to go to schools there. But again,
if you go through our site to that site, we
will get support from Alumni Hall. Now, I asked quot

(01:03:41):
the question that I brought up and broached at the
beginning of the show, and look, we talk about these
things in future cast, right we can't. I mean, we
could certainly discuss it if Coastal goes on to win
the championship, but I also like thinking through, okay, the
what if scenario of them winning a championship and having

(01:04:03):
two titles since twenty sixteen, and would that make them
the most successful baseball program in the state of South Carolina.

Speaker 6 (01:04:13):
It was serious about that.

Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
And look, I understand that South Carolina baseball the game Cocks, right.
I understand that at this point, as of today, they
are the more decorated program of the two. I also

(01:04:38):
understand that as of this day, Coastal Carolina is more
decorated than Clemson. Okay, so in the pecking order of
the history of college baseball, in my opinion, in this state,

(01:05:00):
South Carolina has the best and most successful history. Regardless
of what they've done recently, regardless of what the season
looked like, the game Cocks have been the best program
in the state of South Carolina. But if Coastal Carolina

(01:05:22):
does win another national title, and you start to think
about and again, college baseball was not what it is
today many many years ago. Okay, I'd have to go
back and look to see when College World when the

(01:05:46):
College World Series began, I'd have to go back and
look at all of the kind of the ends and
the outs of of the nature of college baseball. Right.
I can tell you that Clemson's first NCAA tournament appearance

(01:06:06):
was in the forties. Nineteen forty seven. South Carolina's first
NCUBA Tournament appearance was in nineteen seventy four. So I
can tell you for thirty years, Clemson was the best
program in the state of South Carolina, and maybe was

(01:06:28):
the best in the state of South Carolina up until
the game Cocks won back to back national titles in
twenty ten and twenty eleven. Now we could argue that
nineteen seventy five South Carolina team was the runner up.
They were also the runner up in nineteen seventy seven.
They were the runner up in two thousand and two,

(01:06:49):
and in two thousand and two they got past Clemson
to get there, and they were the runner up in
twenty twelve, nearly going back to back to back. Now,
Clemson's never been the runner up in college baseball ever. Okay,
the best Clemson has done is gotten to the College

(01:07:12):
World Series, but they've always been eliminated before reaching that
final series and having a chance to be in the
runner up phase. Now, Coastal Carolina's a win away from
securing runner up status with the possibility of securing their

(01:07:34):
second championship status since twenty and sixteen. Now I bring
all this to light to say that if Coastal were
to win the championship, if they were to become the
twenty sixteen and twenty twenty five national champions, given the

(01:07:56):
fact that South Carolina has been playing baseball since eighteen
ninety two and didn't do anything for their first eighty
years in terms of postseason tournament appearances. Their first NC
DOUBLEA tournament appearance was in nineteen seventy four, eighty somebid

(01:08:17):
years into their program's history. Clemson doesn't have a national title,
so they're pretty much by default, in my opinion, the
Tigers are sort of out of this argument based off
of the way I'm looking at it. Clemson's jews just
been eliminated by not having championships. But the Tigers have
been playing since eighteen ninety six, just a couple of

(01:08:39):
years after the game Cocks kick things off. Coastal has
only been playing since nineteen sixty three. They've been to
twenty one NCUBLEA tournaments. They've been reaching champs four times.
They've now made two appearances in the College World Series,
and if they win another one, I don't know how
you can even argue it's not even close In my

(01:09:01):
opinion at that point, Coastal Carolina would be the most
decorated program in the history of this state at the
highest level because again they didn't get founded until nineteen
sixty three. And look at the success that they've had

(01:09:24):
by comparison to two teams that were founded in the
late eighteen hundreds. And I know I'll look during the
break about when the NCAA Tournament started in baseball. It's
at least forty seven, because that's when Clemson went. But
for crying out loud, window of opportunity and success, they
would be tops if they win a title, no doubt.

(01:09:45):
Stay with us Clemson Sports stall laud in Swamwia on
a Monday again on Twitter at Clemson Sports Instagram TikTok
we are where you are come find us Facebook recruiting
coverage on the website as well. That's upright now to
get thinking all our sponsor So during the break I
went to the nc DOUBLEA Baseball Tournament Wikipedia page. It
was found in nineteen forty seven. Clemson made the inaugural

(01:10:08):
n c DOUBLEA Tournament. Again, South Carolina would not make
the College World Series. This is hard for me to
believe until nineteen seventy five. Coastal Carolina, as we touched
on just a few minutes ago, was it founded the
baseball program at Coastal Carolina. I don't know about the school,

(01:10:32):
but the Coastal Carolina baseball program didn't exist until nineteen
sixty two. And again they didn't beat South Carolina, and
who knows, maybe they weren't big enough. That's another question, Like,
certainly South Carolina was big enough in nineteen forty seven

(01:10:53):
to be a team that would have been able to
qualify for the College World Series. Let me let me
just before I get a little further. This kind of
got my mind rattling around a little bit, like when
did they get to be a big enough program Coastal

(01:11:13):
Carolina that they would have been allowed to be in
the NCAA Tournament? Right, Like, I don't know when, I
don't know what that looks like. Maybe forever they've been
able to who knows. Anyway, I can't find that on
the page that I'm looking at, So that's neither here
nor there for this argument. But the tournament was founded

(01:11:36):
in nineteen forty seven, and some of the earliest success
in the tournament those teams continued to have success for
many years now. Cal who is now in the ACC,

(01:11:59):
is a two time one winner. They actually won the
inaugural tournament back in nineteen forty seven, and they won
their second championship in nineteen fifty seven. They are a
handful of teams. One of six teams. I believe they
have two national championships, the second championship with the Southern

(01:12:20):
Cow and USC. The Trojans have twelve championships, winning in
forty eight, fifty eight, sixty one, sixty three, sixty eight,
seventy seventy one, seventy two, seventy three, seventy four, seventy eight,
and ninety eight, so eleven of which happened basically before

(01:12:41):
my life. LSU, who was at the College World Series,
they have seven all recent ninety one, ninety three, ninety six,
ninety seven, two thousand, two thousand and nine, and twenty
twenty three. I think, given the fact that they've got
seven championships since nineteen ninety one, given the fact that

(01:13:04):
they're al in Omahakan, LSU is the pre eminent baseball
program in America, clearly more than any name we've talked about.
Texas has six titles, winning in forty nine, fifty, seventy five,
eighty three, two and o five at a little old,
a little new. Arizona State has five titles sixty five,

(01:13:29):
sixty seven, sixty nine, seventy seven, and eighty one. So
those are the teams with the most championships. Then there's
three teams with four Arizona seventy six, eighty, eighty six
and twenty twelve. Cal State Fullerton's seventy nine, eighty four,
ninety five, and four in Miami eighty two, eighty five,
ninety nine and oh one. Miami is another one similar

(01:13:52):
to LSU a lot of recent championships. Now LSU's much
more recent by comparison, LSU's won seven in the time
that Miami's won just two. Minnesota and Oregon State both
have three championships. Minnesota fifty six, sixty and sixty four.

(01:14:13):
Minnesota was a power in football and baseball. I guess
many many moons. Ago and Oregon State won titles in six, seven,
and twenty eighteen, all very recent for the Beavers, who
are still alive out in Omaha. I mentioned cal Michigan's

(01:14:35):
got two and fifty three and sixty two. Oklahoma's got
two and fifty one and ninety four. South Carolina's got
two in twenty ten and twenty eleven, and Stamford with
two in eighty seven to eighty eight, and Vanderbilt in
fourteen and nineteen. But there's Coastal one of the teams
with a single title with a chance to move into

(01:14:55):
that group that I mentioned earlier, with two teams with
two national championships. The only other teams to ever win
a national title in college baseball Coastal Florida, Fresno State, Georgia,
Holy Cross, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Old
miss Pepperdine, Rice, Tennessee. You sell a Virginia Wake Force

(01:15:18):
in Wichita State. But from where I sit, given all
the stats in the history of college baseball, the fat
and the Tournament began in nineteen forty seven, all of
the years that South Carolina before their first visit in
seventy five, had a chance to go, all of the

(01:15:38):
years that Clemson's had never won a national championship, let
alone two. I'm gonna say it again, unequivocally, this is
not a slight to South Carolina. This is not a
slight to Clemson. If Coastal Carolina wins the national championship
in college baseball. It is the best program in the

(01:16:00):
history of this state. Don't come cry to me about
what about our four runners up? Swannye. These guys have
been playing baseball for sixty two years South Carolina, You've
been playing baseball for one hundred and thirty three. I

(01:16:27):
don't want to hear it. This is not an anti
South Carolina baseball moment. And I know some of you
game cocks like the show.

Speaker 2 (01:16:36):
I'm a Carolina fan. I would listen to your show,
and I want to compliment you on your even handedness
between Clemson and Carolina.

Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
And I know some of you don't.

Speaker 5 (01:16:45):
I listened to the sports talk radio all over the nation,
but the one do you come across makes me sick.

Speaker 6 (01:16:51):
You're gonna find yourself not on the radio.

Speaker 1 (01:16:54):
But the math is the bath and the success is
the success. And there's no doubt this has been the
best team in this state the past decade. That's easy
with what they've done by comparison to both Clemson and
South Carolina. But if they win another title, they are
the best program in the history of this state success wise,

(01:17:14):
in my opinion, Final segment around the band keep it locked.

Speaker 2 (01:17:21):
What have you done for me lately? It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture. Don't forget history.
Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done?

Speaker 1 (01:17:40):
Always are the same.

Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
We win.

Speaker 1 (01:18:34):
Final segment on a Monday again the show the Shakespeare
Satellite ever day from four until six o'clock right here
on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred and again. I live
in a little bit of a time machine in the summer.
So you want an update on college baseball, I don't
have it for you because I was done well before

(01:18:54):
that game got underway. And that's the way it works
during the summer, because I knock it out and spend
time with the family and take care of business around
the house and everything. I'll just linger all day waiting
for the show to get going. But tonight in the
NBA one team will take a huge advantage as a

(01:19:15):
two to two series, We'll move to three to two
in one direction or the other eight thirty pm on
ABC again. We talked about this series a little bit earlier,
but shake Gildas Alexander getting somewhat people like to label
as favorable calls. But I'm going to tell you, if
you got your hand in the cookie jar in the
modern NBA and a guy moves up and through your

(01:19:37):
hands to take a shot, you are going to get
a foul called. I don't care what you think about that,
because I'll tell you if we're at the gym and
this is this is why it doesn't bother me. First off,
I've played enough basketball for it to not bother me.
But if we're at the gym and the same thing happens,

(01:19:57):
and I have the ball in a three point stance
and you're reaching into the cookie jar and I go
up to take a shot, and you foul me because
you don't get your hand out of the way, and
really I'm initiating the contact. I'm calling the foul right

(01:20:17):
like now again, and pick up basketball. At least the
way we played, you didn't get free throws. You just
got possession of the ball. You got a chance to
go to whop and sometimes you'd let something go if
you felt good about a shot. Then you'd have this
one guy that would call one late after the ball mischief.
But man, that's a eight call. Then then the arguments
break out. Perry and those guys, the arguments would break out.

(01:20:41):
These guys know who I'm talking about. Anyway, I think
that shake Gil just Alexander is easily the best player
in this year. Is he's the MVP of the league,
and his ability to get basically whatever shot he wants
is a big deal, consistent of the free throw line.

(01:21:04):
If they win to night. If Oklahoma City wins tonight,
I think it's it's game set match. If by some
I don't want to call it a miracle, but if
shockingly Indiana goes into Oklahoma City at Gamebridge Fieldhouse and
wins a second game, that you want to talk about

(01:21:26):
a crazy level of impressive to win two in that venue,
oh Man live, because those fans I think of anything,
you know. I talked about how the Pacer fans had
sort of that collegiate atmosphere which is so impressive to watch.
I hope, just for the sake of the game, that

(01:21:48):
the Oklahoma City fans will carry that same type of energy,
right like, recognizing just how valuable the fan base was
in those two games in Indiana. Even though that series
still those two games are still split. One game a
piece in the series. But now with it too two,

(01:22:11):
the finals race takes a big step step forward. Here's
one thing I wish would take a step forward. I
don't know about you, guys, but the audio. I don't
know if I mentioned this last week or not. Dude,
the audio on the NBA Finals at my house is atrocious.
And I tried it. I did mention this to you,
but because I did try on the YouTube TV app

(01:22:33):
and it was the same, very guarribly at times, I
only hear the fans. I don't hear the announcers at all.
And I know everybody doesn't have it because I see
people telling other people that have the same issue, like
I don't have that issue, but hey, where I'm at, man,
this has been disappointing trying to listen to these NBA games.

(01:22:54):
The odds to win the NBA titles still favoring the
Oklahoma City Thunder at minus five twenty five the Pacers
at plus three eighty five. On that front, shake Gilgess
Alexander still favored to be the Finals MVP, and hard
for me to imagine a game seven, really hard for
me to imagine a game seven if Oklahoma City wins tonight.

(01:23:16):
I think they'll close it out on Thursday, but if not,
we'll be going till Sunday, nearly a week from the day.
June twenty second, that's when Game seven is scheduled in
Oklahoma City if necessary, at eight pm. But again tonight,
get your NBA fix on ABC. By the way, did
not mention how things shook out at the US Open.

(01:23:40):
JJ Spawn captured this first major title to win the
US Open. We talked about Spawn on Friday. The crazy
thing about it was Spawned bogie what like four of
his first five holes. I mean he had a rough start,
but then on the final hole from sixty four and
a half feet out, Spawn did this to cure the victory.

(01:24:01):
I want to cozy it up, don't need to make
it two punts run what a butt. He was the

(01:24:22):
only player to finish under par. How's that for a number?
Spawn wins it at the US Open. We'll be back tomorrow.
Until then, as always, you'll take care now and goat Tigers.
