By the way, speaking of telephone numbers, how about our
friends over at Mets Plumbing seven three two drip, Drip drip.
You know the jingle seven three two drip. That's Mets
Plumbing all right out of the gates on a Tuesday afternoon. Mike,
(01:51):
you've joins us in our number two Ohio State guard meech.
You Johnson has committed to the South Carolina game Cocks,
And so if you're wondering, yes, that's the same meet
you Johnson who left South Carolina for Ohio State last year.
(02:15):
A little left footing, a little left foot out, a
little left footing, and you shake it all about, you
do the portal shuffle in, you turn yourself around. That's
what that's all about. Boom and the news that maybe
maybe R. J. Godfrey might make his way back to Clipson.
(02:36):
What are we? What kind of world are we living in? People? Look,
we can we can talk.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I mentioned yesterday about Buzz Williams, and now it seems
like Buzz Williams is going to take the job at Maryland.
And then everybody's always like Jay billis is out here
like well, the coaches in their thing. The coaches don't
go back and forth every year between schools. The portal
the portal isn't you know? I heard somebody today. You know,
I try to avoid listening to sports Salt radio because
(03:08):
I don't want to my I don't want my opinions
formed by some other Yahoo out there. But I heard
I heard the guy on serious XM today, right when
I got in the car before I could change the channel.
Because that's true. I got in the car, I was
listening to a book on tape, but I heard I
heard the guy say something like this, the portal's now
the cool thing to do. No, it's not. The Portal's
(03:33):
just a way to command more money. And it's tragic
that we've got a situation set up like this where
guys go back and forth between programs. I don't. I
don't want r J Godfree at Clemson. I I don't.
I don't even think I would want him if he
was Lebron James. I mean, like, there's a level of
(03:54):
loyalty that I'm looking for in student athletes still as
an objective of deserver of it all, and it's not
the guy that bails on you to go somewhere else
after a year. I think the only way I'm doing
it is if you're coming back for nothing, Hey, you're
coming back for free. We could talk coming back and
(04:15):
getting nothing from us, and sure, hey hop a board,
but you had the chance to be a part of it.
And I could make an argument that Clemson and their
season would have been better with God for you there
this past year, not to mention the fact in the
NCAA tournament, et cetera, maybe the ACEC tournament, it might
(04:37):
have been nice to have a guy like that. Well,
why don't you want him back now? Swanee? Well, the portal,
I mean, the covered is bear because in betwixt the
time we were here yesterday and now, Christian Reeves is
in the portal. Legitimately, every player that played for Clemson
(04:57):
this year is either graduated or portal, I believe now
except for Dylan Hunter. Just Dylan Hunter. And you know,
if Dylan Hunter's name popped up in the portal this week,
I wouldn't go, well, when in the world's happening. I
would go, well, welcome to the sad case of what
(05:20):
it's like in college sports. But not everybody's got to
cover this bear as Clemson. I know that for a
fact because I saw a post that came out. You
know a lot of people have said that to me
when I talked about how empty it is for Clemson.
But I saw somebody put out a post about Kentucky
and the Wildcats and they had like seven guys that
(05:41):
are still on the team. I mean, they're still having
the portal quite a bit, but not like Brad brown
El's portal shuffle that he's gotta do. You do the
portal shoff full in you turn yourself around. That's what
it's all about. Meetzsche Johnson back to South Carolina r J.
(06:02):
God three. Maybe coming back to Clemson is the word
that people are talking about there out there, and I
just can't believe that we still use the word committed
in these graphics. I just can't believe it. I'm not
even sure how these guys can get girlfriends with their
(06:25):
level of commitments. I like, yeah, I don't think so yeah,
I don't think so good gracious, can you believe it?
I mean rarefied air to find the guy that sticks
around in plays a full career anywhere anymore, it especially
(06:45):
in college basketball. It is. It is awful. It's embarrassing.
It is. It's embarrassing. It's in my opinion. I mean,
maybe I'm just a hold. Maybe I get off of
my law. Can't can'ts standard when you cads are on
my lawn.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
It's just it.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I don't blame I don't blame you the fan for
being frustrated with it. I don't blame you the fan
for saying, you know what, I'm not gonna support it.
I I don't blame you the fan at all. I
don't care if you're a Tiger, game CP, Bulldog, yell
Jacket or Seminal. If you're not tired of this nonsense,
I don't know how you can't be. I mean, if
you're a Gamecock fan, think about I bet you we
(07:25):
could go back and find a thousand tweets of negative
comments about meet you Johnson leaving a year ago, and
now you're like, welcome back, fellas, where are you been?
This is the equivalent. This is the equivalent. So the
book I was reading was Spare, And if you don't
(07:46):
know what Spare is, it's about Prince Harry. Uh you
know of the the British royal family and Prince Harry.
I'm not I'm not gonna lie. I think a lot
of people out there probably think that. Like I don't
think people think highly of King Charles. I think they
thought highly of the Queen. I think when she was alive.
(08:08):
I think they think highly of Prince William and his
wife and all that. But I gotta tell you something.
You listen to that book now. Unless Harry is just
telling a bunch of lies, which I don't think. I
don't think he is, just based off of reading it
the way they treated Prince Harry once he started dating
(08:32):
Megan Markle then had kids with her, and all the
way they wanted to leave the Royal family and the
lack of protection they offer them and etcetera, etcetera. I mean,
what we're talking about with these guys like meet you
Johnson coming back to South Carolina and Gamecock fans embracing
him with open arms, would be if something tragic happened
to the royal family over there, and all the heirs
up until it got back down to Harry had to
(08:57):
be the king. They're like, welcome back, Harold, what's up,
my man, King Harold all hail, We love you man. No,
they've treat them like garbage. Not the British people. The
British people have been good to Harry. I'm talking about
(09:18):
the Royal family, like we need you man in our
time of need. Can you return? Harry's like I remember
what you said about me. Meet you. Johnson's like I'm good.
I'm coming home, Columbia. Here I am, I'm back. Little
hiatus to Ohio State I mean it felt like April
(09:42):
Fools Day when I saw it. I mean it is
April Foles Day, but it felt like it. When I
saw it, I was like, what get out of here? Nonetheless, yeah,
this is the path that we have now set ourselves on.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
All right.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Back to Christian Reeves big Man project at Clemson, I
saw a lot of promise a former four star recruit,
but a couple of years at Duke came to Clemson,
had a moment, you know, had a cup of tea,
had a ball game, if you will, where he had
some decent hoops but not enough to really call it
(10:18):
a career at Clemson. But he's gonna pack it up
and see what's happening. I can't. I can't even understand it, man,
I really can't. And I know it's the money. I
know it's the opportunity to go make more money. I
get it. And maybe some of these guys are just
throwing their names in.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
But.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
She willakers what a weird what a weird time to
cover sports? I mean it is, I'll be honest, I'm
sure it's a weird time to cover politics. For people,
it's a weird time to cover sports. It really is
because you just never know what you're gonna get, As
(11:00):
Borist Gump would say, you navin know what you're gone
like gay eh. Speaking of coaches who have moved around,
I don't know if it was the midst of all
the portaling. I don't know if it was the midst
of the NCAA tournament or what, but somehow I missed
Xavier head coach Sean Miller taken over at Texas. The
(11:25):
Longhorns job has been filled by one of the one
of the big names in coaching. Quite frankly, obviously, you know,
he's got his baggage from his time at Arizona, and
maybe because now Texas is in the SEC, he feels
pretty good about not having to be in the Big
twelve if he were, you know, a year ago or
whatever it would have been, and having to go back
(11:46):
and face the Wildcats at home. But he'll make himself
at home in the SDC, in the Southeastern Conference. Another
big name in that league in the coaching world, as
Sean Miller accepted the job in Austin just a few
days ago. So the coaches portal, the player portal, I mean,
(12:09):
we're all over the map with what you're dealing with
on that front. And I'm not sure when and if
it will ever be normalized, but I feel like there's
a responsibility out there amongst the coaches, out there amongst
(12:30):
maybe even in some respects, maybe even out there amongst
the boosters and the individuals who front the money that
goes into all this, to just say enough is enough.
And I'll give you an example. Imagine what the salary
(12:57):
of the a.
Speaker 5 (13:01):
G League is.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
G League players earn a base salary of about forty
thousand dollars for a six month season. Those are the
guys that cannot cut the mustard in the NBA about
forty thousand. And here are players collegiately where you guys,
(13:34):
the individuals in these collectives, et cetera, are willing to say,
forget what the actual market value of that kid is.
You know, he can go pro and make, you know,
not make the NBA, and this is what he can
make in the G League. Or he can stick around
(13:56):
in college and make four hundred thousand or whatever some
of these guys are make it or a million. Is
he gonna play in the NBA? Swanie this kid, No,
he's not, but he can make ten times or you
know whatever, the twenty times the amount that he could
make if he was in the G League just by
(14:18):
playing college basketball, because all of all of the yahoos
that are willing to donate and support to this stuff
will give it, wait for it for the hopes to
win a national title. One team wins a national title
(14:40):
every year one regardless of how much nil money you spend,
only one team will win the national title. It's not
a two team deal. So all of that money for
ninety nine percent of the teams, in a large part,
(15:02):
just goes to waste. If the ultimate goal is to
win the championship every year, all but the one team
that wins it, everybody else if you weren't in the
tournament or you finished runner up, you did not win
the championship. Doesn't this have to level off at some point?
(15:23):
If G League players are making forty grand how can
we continue to have a system where people are just
gonna pour oodles and oodles of money in and not
win championships. I can't fathom that this is gonna continue
to work. I can't fathom that we're gonna continue to
(15:44):
accept players doing what Michi Johnson's done by going from
Colombia to Columbus to Colombia. That just again. I know
R J. Godfrey's name has been mentioned. I'm not interested.
(16:04):
It's not my call. I'm not Brad Brownell. Maybe Brad
Brownell has a great relationship with him, but let me
tell you, unless you're coming for free with no strings attached. Hey,
I need X amount of money, I just if it's
just look, I hated Georgia. I want to be back
at Clemson. I'm here. I'll come groveling back with my
(16:28):
little knapsack on my shoulder like the little hoboes in
the cartoon back in the day with the stick and
a little tied up bag. I'm just coming back, Coach.
I got enough money at Georgia. I don't need any
more money. I just want to play for you because
I think you're a better coach. I think this is
a better opportunity. Okay, I might open up the old
(16:55):
arms and throwing a little embrace around a player and say, hey, man, RJ.
Welcome back. Welcome back, man. We missed you. I hate
you left, but don't come back. Don't come back at
me and go with your handout. Hey, coach, I was
(17:16):
thinking about returning how much money can I get. Well,
let's see your average six point one points per game
and three point four rebounds when you were here. Last
time you went to Georgia and you improved those numbers slightly,
you went up to six point four points per game
and three point eight rebounds per game. I hope you
(17:38):
thought it was worth it, because we don't think it's
worth it to pay you a whole lot for those
kind of numbers. Now, if you had been willing to
put in oh, I don't know. If you'd put in
sixteen and seven at Georgia and now you want to
(17:58):
come back, then maybe we could talk about some particulars
on the financial front. But based on what you did
with the Dogs, you didn't improve. So hey, good luck
wherever you go, but we're not gonna pay you. That
would be my attitude towards it. As a matter of fact,
if he did every sixteen and seven, I'm not sure
(18:19):
I want him back, other than the fact that right now,
it's like Dylan Hunter. I got a text message yesterday
evening that said I'm hearing there might be somebody else
that gets in the transfer portal. And this this was
after this was after Christian Reeves got in and I
(18:43):
don't know if the person that texted me got that
news before the news was gonna break about Christian Reeves
and they didn't realize that Reeves had put that out,
or if that means that Dylan Hunter is gonna be
going into portal, because when the message came through, I
was like, well there anybody, there's nobody else to go. Yeah,
(19:07):
some of the freshman Fellow's, Ace Buckner and all that
could jump in, sure, But if you're talking about people
that played, if if the you know, the if the
thing is the people that have played, then uh, oh
well we're at the uh. I guess boys men said
(19:31):
it best in nineteen ninety five. Although we've come to
the end of the road, we're the end of the road.
We had nobody else. I know what you're thinking, Swanni,
why do you insist on singing? Listen? When the Good
Lord was handing out good looks and singing voices, I
got good looks. I didn't get a singing voice. I
(19:53):
wish I could. I wish I was ugly and could sing,
but I'm not. I'm handsome and I can't. It's a
bird night bear, stay with us. Clempson Sports saw the
show The Shakespare south Land on a Tuesday afternoon NATO
three four five zero zero eighty six text line, phone
line Clempson defensive tackle slash defensive lineman. Because he played
(20:16):
in some last year. Peter Woods met with the media
recently and he was asked about I would go on
a slim build, but he was asking about how much
weight he's lost.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Right now.
Speaker 6 (20:32):
I probably probably lost about twenty fifteen fifteen real pounds,
about twenty pounds, But really it was just like a
little small tweets in my diet, just a little bit
extra every day, just so I can, you know, play
more plays at a higher level for a longer period
of time. And that's something that me and coach Twinney
have really, you know, put on my back end and
(20:53):
challenged me to do.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Is how many plays?
Speaker 6 (20:55):
You know what I'm saying, you're putting this stuff on film,
but how many plays can you play at a high level?
And I felt like probably getting a little smaller but
was probably something I needed to do.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
Peter Woods was asked about his weight last season and
kind of where he was playing.
Speaker 6 (21:09):
I played the season at like three twenty be personally,
I think that was too heavy. I think towards the
end of the season, after I got back from injury,
I was I seen like three thirty three thirty something,
and that just definitely wasn't, you know, where I was
supposed to be at all anywhere playing football for anybody.
So so we cut that down pretty quick.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Man.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
I absolutely love this kid. I mean, he's got Christian
Wilkins kind of vibe when you watch him, when you
listen to him, just a jovial, intelligent, smart, funny I
can't even I can't even put into words like the
connection I see between those two guys, with the way
they both carry themselves, the pride in which they play
(21:53):
the game. He was also Peter Woods was asked about
what kind of led to his weight maybe up a
little bit last season.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Uh, yeah, I could.
Speaker 6 (22:03):
I mean, it'd be crazy if I didn't say that
had something to do with it. I mean obviously I
was like, I can't just tell you everything that that
had to play a part in it. But I think
just not doing stuff and you know, just kind of
feel astart for myself about being Andrew and not being
able to play. It's a lot of stuff that factored
into it, but you know, fact of the matter is
that that we were we're working to get it off now.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
So Peter Woods was asked about what adjustments he's made
to his diet so far that's giving him this new look.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
It's just like simple stuff. I mean, even stuff to joking.
He was like, don't eat dinner after a certain time,
like late night eat sit on you. You wake up
in the morning still on you because your body hasn't
digested it.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Like little stuff like that.
Speaker 6 (22:38):
I promise you it wasn't anything super crazy, but that's
just just an example.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Peter Woods, Clemson defensive lineman, was asked about will help
the transfer of the Tigers brought in from Purdue. Here's
Woods's comments on this new teammate.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Yeah, I'm super excited about what bro he brings.
Speaker 6 (22:57):
You know, just even off the field, he brings a
lot of fire at the leadership, another leadership component to this,
to this defense full of leaders. You know, I really
appreciate the way that he's coming here, and you know,
he's already like a brother to me, and I'm just
super excited to get to play with him, and I'm
excited for you all to be able to see the
stuff that I've been seeing, things that he flashes.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Peter Woods was asked to give some of his first
first impressions on what he saw from help after he
arrived at Clemson.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
The practice field.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
I can remember like the first time I did a
Matt drill with him, and I think it was probably
maybe I was probably getting in a freshman or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
And then here he comes right beside me.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
Got first day on campus and he yelling right beside me,
just setting it tone. But it's not even the verbal pieces.
It's the fact that day in and day out practice
Matt drills, workouts, He's always actively being an example now.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
For Peter Woods. His defensive coordinators entire career at Clemson
has been Wes Goodwin. But now Tom Allen comes in
from Penn State and Woods was asked to kind of
give his insight on what he feels Coach Allen has
brought to that Clympson Tiger defense.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Thanks man.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
I love Coach Allen. I tell everybody who asked me,
I run through a wall for that man. He just
brings so much energy to the defense, you know, beyond
scheme and stuff. You know, I don't even want to
get into all that, but just the person that he is,
he's a challenger. He's a guy that's going to make
you uncomfortable in every situation. When you think that you're
the best that you can be, He's going to prove
to you that you have so much better to get.
(24:24):
And I think that's something that I can appreciate and
where I am in my career.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Additionally, Peter Woods was asked about accountability for that defense
coming into the twenty twenty five season, and you know,
what the expect what the expectations are on that front,
and really whether or not this team was finishing defensively.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
I don't think it was that.
Speaker 6 (24:48):
I will tell you now that we are held accountable
like to to a high degree, to a high degree
of how much effort we give every practice by loafs,
things like tackling, hand playing everything.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
We're held accountable for everything.
Speaker 6 (25:04):
And that's just something that we've prided ourselves on as
a program.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
That's just the accountability piece.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
I'm sure you've heard about the accountability teams and stuff
fifty thousand times, but uh, that's that's kind of something
that he's brought and made a heavy, heavy purpose on
a defensive line, a defensive side of.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
The ball, and of course those accountability teams are where
the players if you don't if you don't know, this
is where they draft like everybody, based off of academics
and all of that, and they put together these teams
and it's kind of a competition. It's not it's not
quite survivor you're gonna get voted off the island. But
there is a component to you know, attendance in class
and everything that encompasses being a football playing student athlete
(25:45):
at Clemson, So accountability has always been a big deal,
but Peter Woods saying that, hey, coach Allen's ramped it
up now. Woods was also asked about trusting the plan
and looking towards next fall when Theers are back out
there on the grid iron a lot.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
But but my main focus now is just, you know,
just getting better and you know, getting this new defense,
getting this new install and just trusting the play and
trusting the technique that my coach is teaching me. But
obviously you don't want to forget the past, but you
also don't want to dwell on it too much. And
that that's kind of where we are with that, you know,
just remembering where we messed up and using that that's
fuel to fix it.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
But that's about it.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Woods was also asked about the thing we mentioned earlier,
you know, with this new frame playing defensive end, defensive tackle,
you know, what are his thoughts on that at this point?
Speaker 6 (26:35):
Obviously I'm a defensive tackle, That's probably how everybody views me.
But I feel like I'm first start enough to play
anywhere on the defensive line, and I feel like I've
always been that way.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
So final thing from Peter Woods here in this segment.
We might get some more in in the next segment
if possible, but he was asked about, you know, his athleticism,
his size, the way he with, the way he's able
to move. Here's what Peter Woods had to say.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
Just the fact that you know, it allows me to
be able to do what I'm great at, which is
you know, moving. It was just moving around, being able
to you know, play in space, isolate isolate guys who
I feel like probably aren't as athletic as me, and
just get some of those one on one opportunities that
this defense might create for me.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
And our thing is that you know, are gonna be
great for this year.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
I was looking at it. One of the things he
was asking about is Jeremiah Alexander's former high school teamates.
So we'll definitely dive back into some more Peter Woods
here around the bend right here on Fox Sports Radio
fourteen hundred and on the iHeartRadio app the show that
Chase the South Laandclipses Sports. So we were listening to
Peter Woods, and I couldn't help it. Man. The next
question was about Jeremiah Alexander. We'd already heard from Peter
(27:43):
Woods about will help. But Jeremiah Alexander and Peter Woods
both went to Alabasta or Thompson High School in Alabasta, Alabama.
Here's Woods talking about his new old high school teammate.
Speaker 6 (27:59):
If you would, yeah, Man, me and Jeremiah we go
way back, all the way back past high school. And
so I really thought he should have came here out
of high school. That's just my personal opinion. And so,
I mean, I knew exactly, I knew exactly what type
of guy he was, what type of player he was,
and just being here for a couple of years already,
I just didn't think it was any better fit for
(28:22):
us and for him to retain attain a player like that,
but also him being being able to fit into this culture.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
It was it was a no brainer.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
For me, Jeremiah alexand excuse me Peters to ask about
Jeremiah Alexander. Also about how Alexander fits into the program.
Speaker 6 (28:38):
I mean much like the Will, much like the Will situation.
And I feel like we hit the jackpot on those
two defensive transfers that we brought in, and man, they
just jelled so so good, just from a leadership aspect
and just you know, being able to just gel with
the players, team chemistry, everything, everything is like they've been
here for for three or four years.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Additionally, when you think about these older guys that you
bring in, like Peter Woods was talking about, where like
will help immediately is like talking to young guys and saying, hey,
you gotta do this, you guy that you're kind of leading.
He and Alexander get to the facilities early for the
get ready phase. Here's Peter Woods talking about that.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Here for everybody else, just extra word.
Speaker 6 (29:22):
Maybe we're doing some extra sprinting or most of it
is like mobility and cardio stuff to get ready to
get our blood, our heartbeat, our heart rate up previous
to whatever workout we're doing that day. But really it's
just you know, just to get there and set the
tone and just just be early. You know, if you're
on time, you're late, if you're early on time. That's
that's what I always learned from coach Eeson. So I
(29:43):
just took it to the extreme. And now we got
five thirty six thirty workouts. I'm here for for thirty.
So that's just just kind of how we're wired, and
that's just kind of how we're going about business, is sure.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
He was also asked about his initial sort of depressions,
is initial conversations and talks with coach Tom Allen, where
Alan really likes to try to get to know his
players and what kind of drives them. Here's Peter Woods,
Clempson's star defensive lineman, talking about those initial conversations with
(30:17):
his new defensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Yeah, obviously, Uh, you know, he's a big man of Fetua.
Speaker 6 (30:22):
Talked a lot about my relationship with God and uh
just kind of shared that with him and we had
that in comment and you know, we kind of just
hit it off from there and started talking about my
family and stuff like that and just ways that I
can help this team in a leadership role and you
know things that you you guys probably probably already know.
But you know, he's just a real clean cut guy,
straight to the point, and uh and you can respect
(30:42):
that from a guy that you know, you're kind of
in essence, you know, he's my coach, but you're kind
of doing business with him. You're you're hoping that he's
gonna get his job done to put you in a
great position, and he's hoping that I'm going to get
his job done getting my job done putt him in
a great position. And so you know, just that feeding
off each other and that understanding that that that we
have from like a player coach relationship. I justly appreciate
coach Allen just for keeping that transparent.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Woods was also asked about coach Allen's intensity and his
energy on the practice field.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
You said it energy for real, like nothing.
Speaker 6 (31:14):
I mean energy and effort and all those different components
and stuff that make you great players and coaches are
are contagious. So maybe I'm coming out there and I'm
not having a day that I want to pre practice
and I see him had Button Wade Wood ass pre
practice when we stretching like I'm immediately gonna wake up
and be like, okay, let's go, like we got work
to do, Like it's time to go, because Ally got
the energy and I need to for me. So he's
(31:36):
just he's just been a great leader for us and
just very easy to follow and uh, you know, very
good footsteps to follow in in my leadership journey.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Woods was also asking about his leadership role on the defense.
Speaker 6 (31:48):
A lot of guys that you could probably pin your
defense on, and I think that's that's a great problem
to have. I mean, you named a couple just as
we've been sitting in here, and so yes, but no,
you know, it's we talk. We talk a lot about
the concept when we really just started talking about this today,
about the concept of being an edgeer and just being
a guy who holds your teammates accountable. And I think
(32:11):
the best leadership player let teams are the ones who
everybody is able to be held accountable. So even as
a leader, if I'm slacking, like I think, one thing
that we have is a great relationship to where somebody,
a first year god tells me something that I know
and convicted about that I know I should be doing better.
I know, Okay, like I gotta get on my stuff, Peter,
let's go, and that that's kind of like what leadership
(32:32):
looks like from the aspect of that I think we're
talking about.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
That's Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods, final a couple of
things freshman and Mario Adams is the name a lot
of people can't wait to see on that defensive line.
Here's Woods giving some insight into the freshman fellow.
Speaker 6 (32:49):
Yeah, I'm super excited about Mario. Man, he's got all
the I mean, you see him. He probably the first
guy off the bus, you know what I'm saying. I'll
probably walk out behind him, you know what I'm saying
on game day. But man, he's just got all the
all the physical intangible things, you know, strong hands, Uh,
he can move for for as big as he is,
you know what I'm saying, Everything that you know what
(33:10):
I'm saying, the physical stature, everything that you want in
a NFL detacle really when you look at him.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
But uh, he's young. He got a lot of work
to do.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
But man, I'm super excited about him and everything that
he could do and he can really help us.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
He was also asked about Adam's maturity as a player
at this point in his career.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Yeah, I mean a guy like that has made it
super easy.
Speaker 6 (33:32):
It's it's it's less of a conversation and more of
a just like I do this, And if I look
back over my right shoulder, I promise you he right there.
And he's one of those guys that I don't really
even have to worry about. I know that he's, you know,
gonna follow suit in and uphold the standard every each
and every day.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Final couple of things from Peter Woods. He was asking
about his decision to stay at Clemson in the era
where players portal in and portal out like crazy.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
They was just rumors. I was. I was right after
their last season.
Speaker 6 (34:01):
I was trying to figure out how to get you
better for this season and help us get to a
national championship. And I do believe that that is attainable
this year, and so my thoughts have not gone off
this team or or anywhere else where Alabama. And rumors
are rumors people just doing their job, but doing mine
as well.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
So final thing, he was asked about that standard of
winning a national championship at Clemson.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
Yeah, one hundred percent.
Speaker 6 (34:24):
I mean that if that's it's not, If that's not
the feeling on your team, I mean, what what are you?
Speaker 3 (34:27):
What are you in it for? You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (34:29):
I would hope that's that's a filler of every team,
but one hundred percent here.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Peter Wood's former five star current star for your Clempson
Tigers on the defensive line. All right, eight oh three

out today, I would have said, Yep, definitely at the
top of the list for an April Fool's Day joke.
Probably not a probably not a good one, but all
concessions at Coastal Carolina football games this coming season will
(35:44):
be free. That's right, All Coastal Carolina concessions for Chanticleer
games will be free. They put out a little video
about it yesterday. Here's the audio on that. It's not
one hundred percent accurate what they say here based off
(36:05):
of the release. But here's Coastal Carolina with a guy
working at the concession stand and a potential quote fan
walking up.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
What's up? Hey, how's it going good? What's the damage? Free?
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Free?
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Well, what about for this.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
Free as well?
Speaker 7 (36:20):
Free?
Speaker 3 (36:21):
All of the free.
Speaker 8 (36:22):
If you want some nachos? Yeah, free too, all free,
all free?
Speaker 3 (36:25):
Free?
Speaker 4 (36:26):
Can I get fifty leaves?
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (36:27):
Free? Free?
Speaker 3 (36:29):
What about a drink? All of it free? Free? Have
two drinks?
Speaker 7 (36:32):
Drinks three?
Speaker 8 (36:34):
Yeah, I talks free tell free there you go, free
free sweet.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (36:38):
Till nation this fall in Brooks Stadium, every fan, every game,
always free free concessions, popcorn, nachos, hot dog, fountain, drinks
and water for every fan this fall. Come out to
Brooks Stadium, get your tickets now, and cheer on the shots.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
Go shots.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
All right, So here's the full deal on that. Because
you heard the guy say, can I get fifty of those?
Not exactly, but it is still free. It is the
Coastal Carolina University Kickoff Meal Deal. Every football game, every fan,
always free. Coastal Carolina is gonna partner with Ara Mark
(37:19):
the concession vendors to allow fans to eat free at
Chanticlair football games inside Brooks Stadium this fall. That was
Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation Chance Miller.
That you heard making the announcement quote. Our fans are
the heartbeat at tell Nation and will always We're always
(37:41):
looking for ways to elevate their game day experience, Miller said.
With the CCU Kickoff Meal Deal, we're excited to offer
free concessions this fall as a way to say thank
you for the energy, passion, and support they bring to
Brooks Stadium. Every game. Ticket purchasing patrons visiting the concession
stands will be able to acquire four items per concession
(38:04):
stand visit from a selection of hot dogs, nachos, popcorn,
and fountain drinks. There's no limit to the number of
in game visits, but fans must scan each trip through
the line. With the soon to be launched launched Coastal
Carolina Athletics App. For more information on the new app
that'll be forthcoming later in the week. Specialty items, food
(38:28):
from outside vendors, and alcoholic beverages will remain available to
fans to purchase. Locations of menus and new items and
student concession information will be announced closer to the start
of the season. Now, it's interesting a couple of things.
Number One, when I initially heard it, I thought, man,
(38:49):
that is a cool idea. And we've seen this a
little bit more like not completely free, but at Camden
Yards this year, you get a you buy a four
dollars sixteen ounce cup and you can refill it as
much as you want. So positive given the fact that
you know, most days on the hot summer day, especially
(39:12):
that ice doesn't hold up in that old plastic cup
and the drink gets watered down. But yeah, free refills
for people that buy that four dollars sixteen ounce thing
in Baltimore. So that's I mean, it's something. But I
thought initially what it would be was these were just
going to be free concessions for season ticket holders, right,
(39:34):
like people who are all in so to speak, with
the Chanta Clears but the way the press release reads
it makes it sound like it's for ticket purchasing patrons,
and I would assume that's anybody as long as you
have the Coastal Carolina Athletics app. Now, maybe when we
get to the fine print of it and get a
little further down, that's what it'll end up being. My
(39:56):
hunch is that the way they're going to offset this
is with advertising. And my guess is that when you
open up that Coastal Carolina Athletics app, it's gonna be
pretty inundated with ads. But because of that fact, and
that's okay, listen, that's how I make my my That's
how I profit with the radio show, right, Advertising, I'm
(40:16):
great with advertising. But I think one of the ways
that they're going to get this offset a little bit
is by some sort of advertising, and with hot dogs, nachos, popcorn,
and Fountain drinks being kind of the limited budget you
can get and just four things at a time, you know,
I think they're just saying, hey, look, we're going to
give back to the fans. We're gonna make this a
more enjoyable experience. They didn't guarantee that it would be
(40:39):
free in the future. You know, they said for this year,
And I would imagine if it works pretty well and
people are pretty satisfied and you feel like you've gotten
your money's worth out of your investment into the Chanticleer program,
probably it'll probably be a big thumbs up from the
fans and they'll want to see more of that. And
(40:59):
I think the other thing is you're seeing there they're
not giving away the beer and the things like that. Right, So,
now what I'm imagining they're hoping is that for say,
the say the family of four that goes to the game,
Let's say that the dad was gonna end up paying
for you know, the kids to get a couple of concessions, YadA, YadA, YadA,
(41:25):
and he's looking over there at that ten dollars beer, like, man,
I just spent forty five bucks on hot dog and whatever.
I'm not gonna get that beer. Well, now maybe the
dad's gonna say, all right, well, you know what, we
didn't pay for concessions. I'm gonna get a beer. Honey,
you want a beer? Now he spent twenty dollars on concessions,
They've got the advertising probably backing some of the offset income,
(41:46):
and ultimately they're making it a more enhanced game day
day experience for families and for individuals to go. Like,
if you're sitting around and going, you know what, how
much would it cost me in the past to eat
four hot dogs to SODA's popcorn and a nacho at
a restaurant forty five dollars? Well, I'll just get a
(42:08):
thirty dollars ticket to the Chanta Clears game going, joy
some football and eat some free food. But we'll see
what else comes out of this. But man, kudos, Shots Up, Baby,
Shots up to the Chanta Clears for that one quick
break hour number two around the band. Stay with us.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with Luwton Schwany.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
It is our number two. That's drivetime right here on
the show The Shakes, the South Lank Clemson Sports saltl
On Swan. Ain't no with you on a Tuesday afternoon.
Of course, Mike Cuba from game Concentral dot Com joins
us right around the bim. We'll talk with him about
meet you Johnson making the announcement that he's returning to
Columbia after a year away. Such a weird story. Not
(43:30):
your way of the NBA. No, no, no, after a
year away at Ohio State, he'll come back to Columbia.
Just ridiculous, But we'll see what Mike thinks then. Also
we'll talk with Mike, you about the South Carolina's football
team is to get ready for their spring game. Obviously
Clemson the spring game coming up this weekend. And don't
(43:50):
forget the show shakes the South Lande brought to you
in part our good friends over at Mets Plumbing seven
three two drip drip drip. You know the jingle seven
or too drip. That's Met's Plumbing. All right, Mike, welcome in,
my man. How you been.
Speaker 7 (44:05):
I'm doing well, it's funny. How you doing.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
I'm good. Hey, look let me ask you, Michie Johnson.
All right, you put your left foot in, you put
your left foot out. He goes from Columbia to Columbus
to Columbia, Mike Clemson. There are conversations that maybe RJ. Godfrey,
who went from Clemson to Georgia, could come back. I
I personally, look, it's two different teams. I don't cover
(44:28):
South Carolina. I'm not interested in RJ. Godfrey at Clemson.
I mean, the dude didn't do a whole lot more
while he was away for me to go, oh, yeah,
welcome back. You know, if he'd put up seventeen points
per game and seven rebounds per contest, then maybe I'm
kind of like, hey, that's a big step forward. But like,
I mean, did Michi Johnson play so well in Columbus
(44:48):
that all of a sudden game Cock fans who probably
tweeted some negative things about it when he left, should go,
welcome back, my man, where you been well.
Speaker 7 (44:56):
I always say this when it comes to the transfer
portal stuff. It's you have to look at everything case
by case. And certainly that's what I would tell people
that aren't as familiar with Michi Johnson situation, because you know, look,
there's a there could have been multiple factors that went
into the decision, but certainly there's one that Gamecock fans
(45:18):
have learned more about over the last couple of weeks
and months. His father was not doing well health wise.
He moved back unfortunately passed away recently so for him
to be able to be closer to home, and then
he you know, he left the team, and you know, again,
this is what the word has been for mental health reasons.
(45:40):
I don't know the ins and outs and everything in
terms of what was going on with his father's health.
But certainly, you know, when a young man is dealing
with something like that, it's hard to fault him by
any means. I think the tough part is because of
the era that we're in with Nil and the transfer portal,
(46:00):
it's easy to look at a situation like this, it'll
lump it in with everything else out. Again, that's not
to say that money may not have been a role.
I think, you know, you'd be a little naive to
just dismiss things automatically. But again, you know, a young
man wanted to be closer to Hall and his father
wasn't doing well, and I certainly can't fall to a
(46:21):
kid for doing that, especially if that is the case,
and I'm taking in that face value.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
You know.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
The other thing that started to bother me is like
a guy like Jay Billis who has kind of this
holier than now mentality about the players because he wants
to defend the players left and right, and he's like, well,
the coaches blah blah blah blah blah, they can move
on blah blah blah blah blah. But dude, coaches don't
do this. Coaches don't go from you know, job A
to job B to job see the job D in
(46:48):
four years. That's just not how it works.
Speaker 7 (46:50):
No, And I think in Mitchie even took the social
media today and basically said, and I'm paraphrasing, but there's
a tweet out online where he you know, even pokes
fun of him. Help a little bit because like, you know, look,
I didn't envision you know, leaving the same school and
going to the same school twice, like you know, going
back and forth Ohio State to USC, back to House Sate,
(47:10):
back to the USC. And he understands, and he said, like,
I get how that probably looks to some people, but
you know, that's how my story was written. And you know,
I think swanny when we look at it, whether it
be you know, from a life standpoint, and I Can'm
not going to judge every single person out there for
(47:30):
what goes on in their life, whether it be a job,
whether it be an X and they go back to
their ex right, Like there's examples in life where people
make a decision and then they for one reason or another,
it just doesn't work out. And again obviously MEETCHI situation.
There were some other factors going in certainly, and they decide, hey,
you know what, I want to go back to this.
So like I can understand that, and I think that's
(47:52):
the the part. I think that muddy's the water a
little bit, and it might not necessarily be for Michis situation.
But we look at the transfer portal these days, I
think automatically people just assume, oh, he's going for the money.
He's going for the money. Now again, I'm not naive.
I don't think any of us are naive to believe
that there are cases where that does happen. But I
(48:15):
also think that there are some cases where a player
goes to one school and then they say, you know what,
I miss being around either my buddies, or I missed
you know, the environment I missed living in a certain area.
May it's the weather, depending on what that other school was,
and they wanted to be back in that other school.
Speaker 2 (48:33):
So meet you Johnson again, from Ohio State to South Carolina,
to Ohio State, now back to South Carolina. Finished his career.
Hey you know what, maybe maybe his careers will be
so stellar. Mike didn't end up in both teams athletic
Hall of Fames, and perhaps be in the SEC, the
SEC Hall of Fame and the Big ten Hall of Fame.
(48:54):
How about that.
Speaker 7 (48:56):
Well, in the next couple of years, maybe they'll just
be one giant conference called CC and Ohio State, you know,
SEC great, Ohio State. You know, we're talking about Stanford
being you know, you're seeing that Katie Leaducky of the
swimmer hope of pronouncing that right, right, you know, you know,
a C C great. You know, it's just like, oh
my goodness, yeah, that's right, Stanford's in the ACC and
(49:16):
we're going to go with that Texas SEC great, Vince Young.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
That was like I think, I think the Atlantic Coast Conference.
During one of the recent ACC Championship games, you know,
they bring out the Atlantic Coast Conference legends, and it's
like Larry Fitzgerald Pittsburgh, Like, wait a second, that dude
didn't take a snap in the Atlantic Coast Conference. I'm
even sure he played at ACC school when he was
in the league or when he was played at pitt.
Speaker 7 (49:41):
Well and that and that happened with one of my
former co workers. I don't know if we mentioned it
on this program when it happened, but at least I
could I could have a little bit more leeway to it. Okay,
former Gamecock linebacker edge Corey Miller. When he was part
of South Carolina, they were an independent and he was
the legend that they inducted this past year for the
(50:03):
SEC like on that, Like, all right, I can understand
that to an extent. But at the same time too,
it's just like you're trying to find that middle ground
of consistency and I don't know, but it's just yeah,
it's so weird the whole you know, And I can
I'm saying that as someone that is looking as an outside.
I can only imagine for many of you who grew
up with the ACC, especially Tobacco Road and all those
(50:26):
school right, it must be even weirder seeing Stanford in there.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
Yeah, when Lynn Bias is the is in like the
Big Ten Hall of Fame at some point for Maryland
and the Atlantic Coast Conference is like wait a second, Wait,
just a second. That guy did not play in the
Big Ten. He's an ACC legend, all right? Anyway, Mike,
you but joins us here on Tuesday afternoons to talk
not only about the South Carolina game coture and the
transfer portal, but also we talk a lot of college
(50:53):
football with him in the game coxture in the midst
of spring practice as well. So, Mike, from that standpoint,
what's the latest news out of Columbia for all our
game cock listeners peeking over the fence and hanging out
with us.
Speaker 7 (51:06):
Well, it's funny. I mean, spring ball continues just to
move along. But I think before we even you know,
we get into the nitty gritties of it all. I
think there's one thing that really stood out to me
going back to last week, and that's from a conversation
of some people inside of the building over the last
couple of days or so, but even going back and
listening to some of the press conferences that have been
(51:27):
coming out, It's funny because when I was in Providence
or you know, when Clemson was here in the Providence Regional,
I had a chance to catch up with one of
the Clempson beat writers that I do respect and have
a lot of a lot of respect for, and we
were talking about the Clemson USC football game and he said, yeah,
you know, South Carolina they telling you Clempson is going
(51:48):
to make sure that Lenoris is in the pocket more.
I'm thinking to myself, I'm like, I don't think that's
like rocket size. I think every team understands that after
seeing weal and not they did to them in the
bowl game. But one thing that I've been hearing more
learn more about and again kind of just hearing a
little hints of it from Mike Shula in his press conference,
but again more so from talking to people inside the building.
(52:08):
What they're doing a lot of this spring is working
on developing Lenora's as a pocket passer. Now when people
hear that, that's not me saying he's going to become
a pocket passer. It's kind of the best way I
would describe it is think about like youth basketball and
a coach would tell someone, hey, we don't want you
to use your right hand when you're dribbling. I want
(52:29):
you to just focus on using your left. I want
you to make you know your non dominant hands stronger.
That's essentially what they're working on this spring with Lenora's
because they know teams are going to throw that at
him where they might put, you know, two QB spies
out there and force him to beat them in the pocket.
So what that's helping him with from again talking to
people inside the building is just his decision making and
(52:52):
being crisper when it comes to getting the football out
of his hands quicker. Now, certainly they want him to
be the guy that able to extend plays with his
feed and be dangerous outside of the pocket. But they're
just trying to increase that strength and make that more
of a strength because they know teams like Clempson, when
you go back to last year and what Illinois was
able to do in the Bowl game, they know that's
(53:13):
going to happen more this year.
Speaker 2 (53:15):
Mike, you've again with us here on the program today
on Twitter at Mike Underscore UVA. Gamecockcentral dot com is
the website. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I mean, obviously,
look when here's what I think you know about Lenora Sellers, right, Mike,
He's not gonna lose that escapability and that aspect of
his game. That's his biggest strength, I would say at
(53:37):
this point. So if you can strengthen the other aspects
of his game and he still has that in his
back pocket, I mean, you make him a much more
versatile weapon than he already is. Because I would argue
that a lot of the and you correct me if
I'm wrong, because you watch more snaps of South Carolina
football than I did. But a lot of the big
(53:57):
plays that he made were kind of the plays where
maybe things broke down in the pocket. I'm talking about
passing plays now, where things broke down in the pocket.
A wide receiver had six seventy eight seconds to make
something happen and he found the guy. It wasn't always
necessarily oh this was this great route and great throw?
Or am I wrong on that front? Because I think
I'm right?
Speaker 7 (54:18):
No, I know, I agree with you. I mean, and
I hate making comparisons, especially when we're talking about some
of the greats, but in the same breath that we
would say with like Lamar Jackson or Michael Vick and
just the ability to get outside of the pocket, that's
when they're at their most dangerous, right because now you
(54:39):
have to make a decision. Okay, what am I gonna do?
Am I going to step up and force him to
kind of throw over the top or am I gonna
let him be? And you know, again not to add
more salt to the wound. But as we saw that
Clempson game in particular, Clempson decided to sit back and
that's where he was able to kind of put them
in a tough spot and he was able to capitalize
with his feet. So I think with him more than anything,
(55:01):
And even going back to that Bowl game, Swane, yeah,
we know that he's dangerous when he can run the football.
He has an absolute cannon for an arm. But you
can have those those skills, skill sets, but you still
need to be able to process when it comes to
getting the ball out quickly when teams are sitting back
in zone, which Illinois did, and they're saying, Okay, hey,
(55:23):
we're only going to send three three rushers. We're gonna
have double QB spy on one side, here's another one,
and you're going to have to beat us through the year,
and you're gonna have to beat us with you know,
little dunk passes. And that was what held him back,
I would say in that Illinois game because it was
just a different look in comparison to what other teams
threw at last season. But I feel like that is
(55:44):
going to be something that teams are going to try
to throw at him more. And credit to Health Carolina
for being proactive with it. I mean, how many times
do we do we go into an offseason with any
team right and you look at it just like, all right, well,
we know what's going to happen. Teams are going to
try to take this away, more so probably in basketball
than anything else. And then what happens they don't make
adjustments or in football you see it in the first half.
(56:06):
We can all see it at home, and they don't
make adjustments, whether it be offense, whether it be defense,
and we're sitting on our couches saying, why don't they
do that? So at least South Carolina is recognizing it,
and I think more importantly when Dorris is recognizing it
and he's understanding, like, all right, hey, look, I need
to focus on this in the spring because teams are
going to try to make me a one trick pony
(56:27):
and really force me to beat them through the air.
Speaker 2 (56:30):
On Twitter at Mike underscore UVA, Now, Mike. The news
came down yesterday that the NCAA denied the appeal or
the question that was raised by Dione Sanders and Brown
about possibly having Colorado and Syracuse play a spring game
sort of against one another. Where does Shane Beemer kind
(56:54):
of falled on the spring game? You know what should
be done with it?
Speaker 7 (56:58):
So I'll say this one. I haven't had an opportunity
to listen to what Shane said on Tuesday, So if
he spoke on any of this, I apologize because sometimes
these things do happen, and when they're juggling two jobs,
you try to get caught up later in the day.
But I will say this from talking to Shane in
the past about number one, spring games, but number two,
(57:19):
I'm just his philosophy on what college football needs to
do as far as preparation goes. I know that he
is in favor of college teams being able to at
least have some type of preseason game. Now that preseason
game might not necessarily be before the start of the season,
but it might be in the spring, right, but being
(57:39):
able to go up against a different school because unlike
high school football, unlike the NFL, unlike really any other
sport you name, there's always going to be a preseason
game and you're going up against a different opponent in
college football, for whatever reason, and I know from a
logistical standpoint, I understand that's one of the main reasons.
But for whatever reason, college football just hasn't figured it
(58:00):
out as far as being able to make that work.
So like I've mentioned before in the past. I give
credit to, you know, Clemson, especially last year against Georgia.
South Carolina'll be playing Virginia Tech week one. I give
credit to these big conference schools, the power for Now
and they go out there and they schedule against other
Power for schools week one because you truly don't know
(58:22):
what you're going to get because you've just been going
up against yourself. So I think it would be great
to at least have some type of opponent that you're
going up against other than yourself. And if it can't
be in August, why not try to find a way
to make it work in the spring. I mean just
listening to some of the things that Fan Brown mentioned
(58:43):
the other day talking about from a logistical standpoint, they
were talking about doing study halls together, you know, when
when if Colorado and Syracuse were able to link up
and be able to have some practices for a couple
of days. So I think it will certainly be something
that will be presented to the NCUBA where the nc
double A. I think the bottom line is, I think
we will see this. I think the reason why it
(59:04):
didn't happen right now is it would have been an
unfair advantage for both those schools if they had done that,
because now it's like the other schools are playing ketchup right,
So I think it will happen at some point, but
there's certainly a lot of logistical hurdles that they're going
to have to overcome because unlike the NFL, when there's
joint practices, they're not dealing with the school. They're not
dealing with the same type of numbers that you're dealing
(59:27):
with from a college football standpoint, even though some of
these rosters are being trimmed down.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
Yeah, I thought the way the NCAA statement read made
me feel the same way as you. Just what you
just said. It feels like next season we might actually
see it based off the way that statement was written,
but who knows anyway. Final couple of things with Mike,
you've again. South Carolina's Guarded and Black spring game will
not be on television. Clemps's games not on TV. Several
schools have canceled their spring games, but South Carolina was
(59:57):
given an option by the SEC to put the game
on or create a thirty minute original program they'll show
on ESPN platforms, and that's apparently what South Carolina chose Mike.
What were your thoughts when that news came out a
couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 7 (01:00:11):
Well, I like the idea of being at least able
to have a spring game, right like some of these
schools are going away from it, or you saw even
last year with old Myths. They have essentially a glorified
a flight football game. And to me, as a former player,
I've always felt this one. I feel like there's so
many pros that come out of having a spring game. Yes,
(01:00:33):
you can have scrimmages like South Carolina from everything I've
been told, they're going to have a scrimmage on Saturday.
Obviously it's closed off to the public and even to
the media. But when you have even you know, say
twenty thousand, thirty forty fifty thousand in a stadium, you're
at least able to get these players, especially the high
school kids or the kids that maybe weren't playing that
(01:00:55):
much as freshmen. You allow them to at least get
a taste of what it's like because you're not going
to be able to do that other than just having
that in game experience. So what's the best thing that
you can do. Well, you give them an opportunity to
be able to get out there and replicate as the
closest to what you can. And I think when you
(01:01:16):
go away from that and you don't have a spring
game whatsoever, or you again Lane Kiffin and just having
like a flag football game, I think you take that
away now. Certainly there's going to be cases like you
look back to Ole Myths last year. Yeah, they had
a pretty good season, but not every team is going
through the same type of changes, you know, whether that
(01:01:37):
be the number of new faces from a freshman standpoint
that are coming in or from the transfer portal. And
you have some of these kids coming from smaller schools
and they're not used to playing in an environment like that.
You're really put in the behind the eight ball because
they're not used to dealing with that type of environment.
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
Again, he is on Twitter at mike Underscore UVA. Gamecockcentral
dot Com is the website part of the own three network.
He's here every Tuesday. Hey, Mike, buddy, Always appreciate you,
my man.
Speaker 7 (01:02:02):
Thank good talking to you there.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
He is, Mike, You've agamecoccentral dot Com hanging out with
us here today. All right, when we come back KA
Clubnick steps to the podium up in Tigertown. We'll hear
what Caid had to say a portion of it. We'll
give you some more from kid tomorrow. He was like
twenty five minutes or something. And with the spring game, Lumen,
we'll touch on that when we return. Stay with us,
rocking and rolling along with you on a Tuesday afternoon.
(01:02:29):
That was Mike Eva before the break, all right. Clay
clayde Club Nick Old clayde Cade Clubnick met with the
media yesterday to talk about how spring ball is gone,
and the Tigers leading man was asked about the Texas
game and the impression that that loss in the college
football plaoff left on this team.
Speaker 3 (01:02:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:02:50):
I mean, you know, obviously h to lose.
Speaker 3 (01:02:52):
You know, we want to.
Speaker 9 (01:02:53):
We had a goal last year and that was to
you know, keep playing as long as we couldn't to
finish with a win.
Speaker 4 (01:02:57):
You know, we learned a lot from it.
Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:02:59):
I think that going out with the game that we had,
we showed that, you know, we can really play with
him and we play with really anybody, and I think
that we all believe that, and I think it just
kind of drove a lot of momentum and the way
we finished the game too, and but just drove a
lot of momentum to the off season. And but yeah,
I think that kind of what you said is, you know,
we got to taste of it, but you know it's
(01:03:20):
definitely uh left to we gotta taste of it, but
we want we want some more.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:03:24):
It was good to get that experience for sure, and
it'd be great to set up next year.
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
Clubnit was also asked about guys like Antonio Williams and
Blake Miller decided to return and if you felt like
he played any role and those guys choosing to stay
in Tigertown.
Speaker 4 (01:03:38):
I try my best.
Speaker 9 (01:03:39):
Yeah, I try my best obviously when I I saw
us coming back and just trying to get as many
guys as we could back. You know, I think that
you know we're gonna have we're have a really special group.
You know, I think this is a really tight group
that uh, nobody really wanted to leave. I think that
deep down Nobby really wanted to so excited to have
all of them back, and you know, definitely try my best.
Speaker 4 (01:03:56):
To get him so it worked.
Speaker 2 (01:03:58):
Clubnit was also asked about his decision to stick around
and not head to the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:04:03):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (01:04:03):
Yeah, I mean, I definitely got some feedback, but I
think that, you know, I knew I wanted to come back.
I knew that it was the right decision, and I'm
looking forward this next year.
Speaker 4 (01:04:11):
I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
Club Nick was also asked about Clipson's returners on the
team and also being in year three under offensive coordinator
Garrett Riley and the advantage that that might give him
spake time.
Speaker 9 (01:04:22):
You know, I think that since I've been at Clemson,
we've always been a young team, especially a really young offense.
So to have the veterans that we have at all positions,
it's it's really special. So and we kind of got
to just go into the offseason kind of take off
where we left. We didn't really have to reset and
restart and go back to kind of day one install.
We just kind of got to come back and hit
(01:04:43):
the road running, and that was it was really fun.
Kind of being in year three now and we all
kind of know what's going on, So it's great.
Speaker 2 (01:04:51):
Club Nick also talked about at length the momentum that
he now feels with this team heading into the twenty
twenty five season.
Speaker 4 (01:04:59):
Yeah, I think so, Oh sure, I mean I think
that I don't.
Speaker 9 (01:05:02):
I don't really like to use the word momentum because
if you're living off the momentum, then the momenticumn.
Speaker 4 (01:05:09):
Stop and like what's gonna happen? Then you know, you
got to keep going. So I try not to just
live off, you know, building.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
Momentum, building momentum.
Speaker 9 (01:05:17):
I don't really like that term, especially as a team,
because if something bad happens or something, is that going
to stop the way we perform next, you know, So
I just try to you know, go to work every
single day, and and that's really it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:05:28):
I think that obviously we can we can we can
use what we learned last year and and use the
success and the good things that happened from last year.
Speaker 4 (01:05:36):
But we just got to keep growing, you know. It's
about just.
Speaker 9 (01:05:38):
Getting better every day and and everybody just being more
and more and more in tune and.
Speaker 3 (01:05:43):
What what we got to do.
Speaker 2 (01:05:45):
Club Thick also gave some insidea in the areas he
feels like he still needs to really improve on.
Speaker 9 (01:05:50):
Yeah, I would say just you know, I think that
I had a pretty good year last year, but I
want to be an elite, you know, and that's that's
consistency every game, every I have every play. So I
have a very high standard for myself and I want
to continue to chase that and I've got great people
that are holding me to that. So I think just
you know, continually making big plays and not forcing them,
(01:06:13):
you know, letting the big plays happen, and limiting bad
plays and limiting negative plays. That was a big thing
that I got better out last year. Fine tuning the
automatic plays. I would say, you know, the plays that
are if you got to hit them eighty percent of
the time, hit them one hundred percent of the time.
You know, just kind of those stuff. So making the
routine plays the routine and making the impossible plays most
of the time.
Speaker 4 (01:06:33):
So that's good swat, he likes to say.
Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
Additionally, the Texas native addressed how he feels about his
situational awareness and how he improved in that front.
Speaker 4 (01:06:42):
Yeah. Absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 9 (01:06:44):
I kind of was thinking that and I forgot to
say it, but I think just you know, watching the
games that I played last year.
Speaker 4 (01:06:52):
And you know, whether it's just you know, red zone
awareness or whatever, like we did some red zone today.
Speaker 9 (01:06:57):
I'm thinking after practice, all right, you know, let's just
go w you know, every time we started the ball
or not start the ball, but the moment that we
entered the red zone, Like let's just watch from there
and you know, what's my game, Like, what's my presence?
Like does it change before the red zone? Going into
the red zone? How does it change going you know,
closer and closer to the goal line. So just knowing that,
(01:07:19):
and it's not just watching the good ones watching the
bad ones, because you got to learn from the bad ones,
so you know, you try not to make the same
mistakes again. But I would say that's huge, and that's
something I definitely took a big jump in, you know,
from two years ago to last year and trying to
make an even bigger one from from last year this year.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
Club that was also asked about transfer wide receiver trist
Is Smith and now he might impact the team in
the red zone being so lengthy man.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
He is. Yeah, he's a great ballplayer.
Speaker 5 (01:07:43):
He is.
Speaker 9 (01:07:44):
He's a dude that can really do it all. You know,
he's a great route runner. He's got great hands. That's
probably one of the best things about him. That's that's
really a skill, not just a born talent, a skill
that he's developed over his years. He's got really good
hands that he he'll go make any catch. But yeah,
obviously his height is it's exciting and just the ability
(01:08:05):
to to go up and get a ball, it's it's
it's definitely fun.
Speaker 4 (01:08:08):
So definitely had some new you know, little kinks in
the in the playbook.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
Taking a step further club that was asked if he
feels like Tristan Smith was the final piece, uh in
the wide Receiver room puzzle.
Speaker 9 (01:08:22):
Yeah, I mean we had you know, Tristan is a
great player. We got we got three dudes that are
in there right now. We really got about six guys
that can They're really good. You know, I wouldn't just
I would say that, Yeah, sure, I mean he's maybe
he's just you know, out of those six, no order,
he's you know, he's the last guy that we really
needed to complete that that really great room. So yeah,
(01:08:43):
it's it's huge. It was a huge addition for us.
He's gonna be great for us and I'm really excited.
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
So they have it. That's some time with k Club
Nick up in Tigertown yesterday. We'll have more of that
for you tomorrow on the program as well as it's
always a good opportunity to queeze in some convo with
the starting quarterback. Obviously, article up on our website right
now talking about the backup quarterback, Christopher Vizena and how
(01:09:08):
things are going for him as well. But there was
some other news that filtered out of Tigertown as well today,
as it was announced that alcohol sales will take place
in Death Valley at the spring game. That news coming
(01:09:32):
out just a little bit ago. We'll take a look
at that, and as the folks over at Tiger Dead said, no,
this is not an April fools, not an April Fool's joke,
So well, hit a quick break. We'll come back with
the reactions to that and the conversations on that front
when we returned. Keep a lot right here on Fox
(01:09:52):
Sports Radio fourteen under the Midlands and of course around
the world on the iHeartRadio app. Hold on to your hats, folks,
Clemson is going to allow alcohol sales in Depth Valley.
All right, we've got the breaking news from Tigertown. Not
an April Fool's Day joke. Published over on our website
(01:10:15):
just a little bit ago, Clemsonsports tal dot com. Published
on Clemson Tigers dot com as well, but the Clemson
Tigers will introduce Now there's already alcohol sales at the
baseball game, and I've got a lot of information for
you on all of that, as this release was pretty
(01:10:36):
extensive in what it covers. Now listen, I get the
pros and the cons of it all. Some of you
will say, I don't want my kids to be around that,
and then I will say to you, even if you
are at the games, there's no way to avoid it, right,
(01:10:58):
there's no way to avoid it. You're gonna see people
with alcohol outside of the stadium. It's completely impossible to
avoid it outside the stadium. Now, there's the argument about
arrests and people getting you know, too much, But there's
a lot in this release from Clemson. We will dive
into it here for you on the program. But then
(01:11:19):
the release it says alcoholic beverages will be available for
purchase at designated Ara Mark concession stands in Kiosk at
Clemson athletic events. Sales are expected to begin at the
twenty twenty five Clemson football Spring game, with limited offerings
available at portable Kiosk and other vendors within Memorial Stadium.
(01:11:39):
Sales at Mkewater Stadium for softball and Doug Kingsmore Standing
for baseball will be piloted beginning the week of April
the seventh. The role out plan and policies include input
from the University administration, public safety officials, industry experts from
air Mark Sports and Entertainment, and Clemson Ventures. Quote. We
are excited to continue to expand concession offerings and roll
(01:12:00):
out this important change to our game day experience, and
we want to be thoughtfully doing so. That's Director of
Athletics Graham Neth He said. We have appreciated the support
from several key groups to begin a safe implementation that
is both fan friendly and family friendly. We will continue
to evaluate the impacts and adapt our offerings and policies
to meet the needs of our fans. Clemson has secured
(01:12:22):
necessary permits. This is not a quote from Graham net,
but Clemson has secured necessary permits with the South Carolina
Department of Revenue, which manages sales of alcohol and the state.
Policies and procedures will be subject to change and modification
as the process evolves and plans for all venues are
under consideration. Clemson has long been one of three power
(01:12:44):
for schools nationally that neither offers the sale of alcoholic
beverages in its athletic venues, nor accept sponsorship revenue from
alcoholic beverage advertisers, and the only school in the acc
SEC or Big Ten that did not do so. To
a responsible and secure process, the following policies will be
in effect. Number one, a valid idea is required for
(01:13:08):
each transaction, so they're not going to give you a wristband.
Number two, Clemson staff and vendors may not serve beer, wine,
or liquor to anyone under the age of twenty one.
Number three, no vertical IDs will be accepted at sales locations,
regardless of the individual's age. Now you might say, what
(01:13:28):
are you talking about? So the younger kids have IDs
that are vertical, not horizontal the way your idea is.
And if you turn twenty one and you still have
a vertical ID, you can't buy alcohol in Death Valley.
You can buy it at a bar, but not a
death value. You're gonna have to go get the horizontal ID.
(01:13:50):
Students will not be permitted to use Tiger one cards
to purchase alcohol. If you're wondering what that means, that's
like where kids parents can put money on a card
for you. You can't use that either, kids, I guess
adults that are students service. No service will be permitted
to anyone who is visibly intoxicated. No more than two
(01:14:11):
alcoholic beverages may be sold or served per transaction. Sales
will begin when the venue opens the door, and sales
cut off times will be posted throughout the venue. Football
game service concludes after the third quarter, Baseball after the
seventh inning, softball after the fifth inning. Other sports service
concludes at a designated time no later than when seventy
five percent of the event's regulation link is scheduled to
(01:14:34):
be completed. Concerts and special events services concludes at the
reasonable time prior to the anticipated end of the Act,
as determined in consultation with the Act and the Clemson University.
So there you have it. By the way, the guidelines
do not impact the existing stadium re entry policies, so
(01:14:55):
CLMEPS you can still have pass out policies and leave
the game, nor the procedures in iptate premium areas. At
this time. The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages sold
outside the venue is prohibited inside the venue, and I
would imagine that's going to get a little bit more strict,
I would guess. And secondly, alcoholic beverages will not be
allowed to leave the venue. So or thirdly, so there
(01:15:17):
you go the news, not in April Fool's Day joke,
serious as a heart attack, Clemson is going to have
alcoholic sales in the stadiums and it will begin at
the spring game this weekend. It'll be the the little tester,
if you will, the little nip sip, if you will,
(01:15:38):
for everybody to get a little taste of what it'll
be like with alcoholic beverages at Clemson. But that news
coming out just a few minutes ago. Eight zero three
four five zero zero eighty six text line, phone line.
That's the way you could be a part of the program.
And of course, don't forget to support all our sponsors,
including right up there in Tigertown, just a stone's throw
(01:16:00):
from Riggs Field, on the corner of campus on College Avenue,
it's Alumni Hall, where students, faculty, and all military received
ten percent off in store. You can also shop online
on our website. Get to get to their website Alumni
Hall dot com, and then we'll get credit for that purchase,
you can revamp your entire Clemson wardrobe for the fall.
Maybe you're getting that new baseball cap for baseball season,
(01:16:22):
or perhaps you're just upgrading the stickers in the the
you know, all the all the ambiance that goes along
with that drive up to Clemson. Whether it's a Paul magnet,
you know, make sure it's at one o'clock. There's a
lot of criticism out there of all you people that
have your Pall magnets place the wrong way. Maybe it's
your we're on our way to see the Tigers play sticker.
All of that stuff available at Alumni Hall on the
(01:16:44):
corner of campus on College Avenue of downtown Clemson, or
online in Alumni hall dot com. All right, final segment
coming up around the bin. We talked about the new
torpedo baseball bat that is catching major League Baseball on fire.
I'll be interested to see how things continue to ride
out with that. But I saw a strange moment take
(01:17:10):
place with a batter in the batter's box earlier this
week that I'd never seen before, and after doing some digging,
turns out that makes a little bit of sense what happened.
But you know, like Clemson with these new fangled alcohol
rules in the stadium, new fangled baseball rules, got players
doing crazy stuff. I'll tell you what it was when
we get back right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen
(01:17:32):
hundred and down on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (01:17:36):
What have you done for me lately? It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done?
Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
Always are the same.
Speaker 5 (01:18:02):
We win.
Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
Final segment. On a Tuesday, I'm headed out to the
Swamp to watch some JB girls soccer. Then I'll be
headed out to White and Ole to watch the varsity
boys play. Sh I'll tell you it was a wild
one in Lexington on Friday night, that's for sure, down
to Neil and coming back and winning the game. Kind
(01:19:12):
of kind of crazy, kind of crazy, A lot of
fun though, But yep, so got a lot of soccer
going on here at the Swan Household this time of
the year. I mentioned yesterday on the program about South
Carolina being one and eight in SEC play, and I
know this is the Clemson Show, and I should be
talking about your Clemson Tigers and everything going on with
(01:19:34):
you know what is certainly one of the top teams
in the country as they travel down the North Augusta
the day to take on Georgia Southern Clemson currently ranked
number four according to the Perfect Game. But I saw
that a South Carolina I count on Twitter tweeted this
after losing to Tennessee. South Carolina's now one and eight
(01:19:55):
and SEC play and this is the worst starting conference
play since their first year in the se See in
nineteen ninety two. Yeah, not great, not great anyway, Shifting
gears a little bit here, just talking about some of
the strange stuff. You know, we talked about the bats
(01:20:18):
that we're seeing in Major League Baseball. These torpedo bats.
They look a lot like the bombs that were drawn
in cartoons back in the day. You know, it'd be
like a bugs Bunny cartoon. This is kind of the
shape of a bomb.
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
Anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:20:34):
You see them all over baseball now and more and
more teams trying to take advantage and have those bats
at it in because of the huge sweet spot and
the ability for these guys to just hit bombs out
of the ballpark. And I don't know what MLB's can
end up doing about it, But I was watching a
(01:20:56):
video on Twitter. It came across. It came across my
line or my feed. I don't know what that means,
but it came across my Twitter feed, and it was
a video of a player for the Saint Louis Cardinals,
(01:21:21):
Wilson Contraras. Contrarasts. Let me know if you've seen this
or if this is something usual, Like, you know, guys
go to the plate, choose some bubble gum. You know,
there's weird routines. There's weird routines that are out there.
(01:21:42):
But Wilson Contreras was called on camera. So his bat
down at the end of the barrel. You know, he's
got it taped up a little bit, that's nothing unusual.
But then all of a sudden he unravels some of
(01:22:05):
that grip tape off of his bat and tears it
off and puts in his mouth and starts chewing it.
Why the what, I'm not sure what was going on there.
(01:22:30):
Here's the explanation though, out of Saint Louis after it
was called on camera. So, you know we've got this
pitch clock thing in baseball. Well, with a dying pitch
clock and the fear of striking out. What he did
was he knows his grip tape was unraveling before three
to two, pitch, used his teeth, unroll it, tore it off.
(01:22:50):
Because he'd already used one of his allowable timeouts and
the pitch timer was in eleven seconds, he needed to
be in the box and alert with eight seconds remaining
or risk an automatic strike call. Contraras just wadded it up,
popped it in his mouth and started chewing on it,
(01:23:10):
they said instantly, he knew it was a bad decision.
Contrella said after the game, that was a bad taste,
really bad. I don't try to put pine tar and
sticky spray on my bat, but it was disgusting. It
was a bad taste. Contreller said it was the first
time and hopefully the last time, that he ever puts
bat tape in his mouth. He said, quote with the clock,
(01:23:35):
you have to do things that are out of your control,
and I had to do that instead of striking out. Well,
I struck out anyway, but I'd rather strike out swinging
to be struck out by the clock. If you haven't
seen it, it's wild man it's it's just he tears
it off, wads it up, pops it in his mouth.
It's like, huh, that's peculiar. Now, I personally, you know,
(01:24:03):
I grew up my dad was the principal at the
high school. I was around the football equipment room and
things like that, and I certainly have taped up and
taped my wrist or whatever, and probably have taken that
tape off and chewed some of it or whatever, just
you know, for I don't know, for whatever reason, I
don't remember having a horribly terrible taste, but I definitely
(01:24:25):
did not chew it up in front of a camera
and millions of people potentially watching on television. Anyway, we
got to get out here. Thank you again for being
a part of the program. Always appreciate each and everyone
to be hanging out with this year on Fox Sports Radio,
Fortune under the Mills and the course around the world
on the iHeartRadio application. We'll talk to you to Arren
till then. As always, y'all take care now and go Tigers.
