Championship Tournament. Is that just ACC Baseball Tournament? I don't know,
like the graphics say ACC Baseball Championship. I guess we'll
go with that second round action up in Durham, Clemson
underway against Virginia Tech. We wondered about the strategy that

(02:15):
Clemson would implore in this ballgame. Would they go with
Aiden Knnock on the bump or would they potentially save
Kannock for tomorrow if they were to win today. But
Eric Beckett's not taking any chances. He put mister k
the sophomore, up on the bump for Clemson. The Tigers,

(02:37):
at last check for me, out to an early three
to one lead in the top of the fourth inning
with Virginia Tech at the plate. Clemson is the five seed,
Virginia Tech the twelve seed. So I'll keep you updated
on that, but again in real time for you guys,
as we come off the gates here at four o'clock,

you'll be a little bit ahead of me depending on
where you are getting your information about the game. So
I'm just a little bit behind you on that front.
We'll talk about what went down in the NBA last night,
oh and what went down in the natel or. Carolina
Hurricanes take Game one on the chin to the Florida Panthers,
meaning the Panthers have stolen home ice advantage. We got

to get back to good up in Raleigh, but in Durham.
Today the ACC Tournament advances on. And here's the rundown
of everything that's gone down at the ACC Tournament. Because
of course, yesterday when we last left you, we only
had a couple of games in the books, and that's

(03:46):
the way this thing is. As a matter of fact,
Clemson in Virginia Tech, we talked about, you know, this
tournament getting a little bit behind the eight ball, so
to speak. Clemson and Virginia Tech didn't get going today.
It was scheduled to start at one o'clock. It didn't
get going until two fifteen because of a high scoring
affair more on Matt in a minute in that matchup

(04:08):
between Cal and wake Forest. Anyway, here's what happened yesterday.
Number nine seed in Miami was knocked off by Cal
twelve to two. Cal did not slow down as the
sixteen seed. They took on eight seeded wake Forest today
and Cal continued their tour ad pace with a six
am first pitch West Coast time. Apparently Cal likes playing

baseball before breakfast. They score fourteen runs, They have scored
twenty six runs in two games. They beat wake Forest
fourteen to twelve to advance to the quarterfinals. Tomorrow at
three o'clock. They will face off with the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets.

(04:55):
The number one seed, so Cal comes to the East
and is taken care of business. As for the twelve seed,
the Virginia Tech Hokies, they topped Stanford yesterday. The thirteenth
seed Stamford's trip to the East Coast didn't go as
well as Cal's. Obviously, Virginia Tech advanced to today's matchup

(05:16):
against Clemson. Again. That game has, you know, because of
the fourteen to twelve game between California and wake Forest
that pushed us one back to a later start time
and Clemson was leading in the heading to the bottom
of the fourth inning. My time now, in game three

(05:38):
last night, fifteen seeded pitt topped ten seeded Louisville thirteen
to eleven. So the fifteen seeded Panthers advanced to today's
game that was alleged to have started or expected to

(06:00):
start at five o'clock. But I'm sure that one's going
to be moved back against seventh seeded Duke. By the way,
the winner. I didn't say this. The winner of Clemson
in Virginia Virginia Tech advances to tomorrow's seven o'clock match
up against fort seed and NC State. The winner of
today's five o'clock match up between fifteen seeded Pitt and
seven seeded Duke will advance to Friday's matchup against number

(06:26):
two seeded Florida State. And then, in last night's final game,
fourteen seeded Boston College beat eleven seeded Notre Dame five
to four, advancing the Eagles to today's nine pm scheduled.
That one could still happen at nine pm, assuming things

(06:48):
kind of maneuver around. It'll be a match up between
fourteen seeded Boston College and sixth seeded Virginia The winner
there will advance to face third seeded North Carolina on
Friday at seven pm. So that's what we're looking at
in terms of the Atlantic Coast Conference. And how about

(07:08):
the fact that in every game yesterday, except for Virginia
Tech in that twelve thirteen matchup, in every game the
higher seed advanced, sixteen seeded Cal advanced, fifteen seeded PIT advanced,
and fourteenth seeded Boston College advanced, and so now we

(07:32):
turn our attention to see how the remainder of this
ballgame goes between Clemson and Virginia Tech. In the top
of the fourth inning, the Hoki's got a couple of
runners on, but Aiden could not got out of the
jam and came away from that inning unscathed, allowing Clemson
to take a three to one lead into the bottom

(07:53):
of the fourth inning, the Tigers gave up a home
run to the first batter of the game, Ben Watson,
to give Virginia Tech a one to zero lead. Then,
in Clemson's first crack at it in the bottom of
the first inning, they got a double from cam Canerella.

(08:15):
They got a single from Jaron Purify that would lead
to the first runs of the game, or excuse me,
the first run of the game for the Tigers, as
Purify would advance the second on a wild pitch and
cam Canerella would score from third. Then a little later

(08:36):
in the bottom half, after a couple of outs, Dominic
Listi homer de right field, driving in purifyed to give
Clemson an early three to one advantage. And again that's
where things stand at last. Check for me. As things
were going down in the bottom of the fourth inning
with Clemson at the plate. So I'll continue to keep

(08:57):
you updated as it happens for me. And again, if
you're following along on social media, you may actually be
you may actually be a little bit ahead of me.
The toughest part of this game so far is the
fact that Virginia Tech's pitcher is named Brett Renfrow. And

(09:19):
I don't know that there will ever be a time
in the history of Clemson's sports that when somebody named Renfro,
especially when it's spelled exactly like Hunter Renfro's name, it's
kind of hard not to have that correlation. Now, he's

(09:41):
not from South Carolina. This is a kid from Manasas, Virginia,
but the odds that they are distantly related is probably
possible either way. Anytime Clemson is going up against a Renfro,
it is hard to be too excited when something bad

(10:02):
happens to that Renfro kid. Now, over at the SEC
tournament that is also underway, and again they've shifted their format.
No more double elimination there. They're just rolling with a
single elimination tournament, much like what we see in the
Atlantic Coast Conference tournament last night. The South Carolina Game

(10:23):
Cocks were eliminated eleven to three by Florida. Florida advances
to today's matchup against Old miss. Also last night, fourteen
seeded Texas A and M skunked nine to nothing Mississippi State.
The eleventh seed Texas A and M advanced to face
Auburn today. In the earlier matchups that we mentioned. Yesterday,

Alabama had beaten Missouri. Alabama taken all Tennessee today. At
last check, the volunteers led that game two to one.
So we've got college baseball galore going on in the
world right now, and certainly for SEC fans and Atlantic

(11:06):
Coast Conference fans, I think that this new tournament format,
with the way it's all shaped up, I think there's
gonna be a large amount of interest in seeing these
games and watching the tournament portion of it all play
out because you don't have all of the you know,

(11:28):
the strain well, especially in the ACC, like the double
elimination side of things in the SEC wasn't like completely
out of the realm of how it works, because you've
got that double elimination format when you head out to Omaha,
but you know to do it in a conference play
situation and teams having to battle back from the loser's

(11:51):
bracket and running through your entire pitching staff. I mean,
that's part of the reason that the Atlantic Coast Conference
kind of embraced that weird pool play format. But you know,
for every for every positive, there are some negatives. And
the negative side of that pool play issue was always
the fact that you could be the you know, a

(12:15):
higher seed and get beat and really have no chance
to advance, and vice versa, you could be the lower seed.
It was just kind of weird how all of that
worked out. Now it looks like Pitt and Duke looks
like Pitt and Duke. Might they be playing at Duke.

(12:40):
I mean, the game just cut to a scene that
showed some players taking batting practice and things like that.
You know, I don't know how far I can throw
this in the Google machine how far the Durham Bulls
Stadium is from from Duke's Baseball stadium. But maybe they're

(13:01):
warming up over at Duke and they're gonna make the
trek over. It looks like it's about a three mile
drive take you about ten minutes, So maybe they're doing
that to kind of advance the game a little bit.
I don't know how baseball, you know, I'm not a
baseball officionado. I don't know what that would be like
for a team to warm up at one field and
then go drive ten minutes and probably less. Honestly, I

(13:27):
would imagine they could get a little police escort and
probably make that three mile drive in five minutes if
they had to, from Jack Combsfield to Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
But I did see some video of those guys warming
up over at that stadium, which might be something in

(13:48):
the Atlantic Coast Conference. It feels like they can utilize
in order to kind of stay above the timeline. Like
I don't know what the situation is in Hoover, Alabama
for the SEC tournament, but I do feel like it's
possible that if you have a second venue that close by,

(14:12):
you could utilize it. And I didn't watch all of
the games yesterday, and so maybe maybe that was kind
of the norm for things. Maybe Clemson and Virginia Tech
even warmed up over there before coming over. Perhaps they
were warming up over there before the you know, while
the Cow game was going on earlier today. I don't know,

(14:35):
it's kind of a smart move. If that's the case,
it's also a smart move if you had to go
and double up to squeeze in a secondary game, which
you know, we talk about finding places to play a
baseball tournament like this where weather could become a factor,
and I'm gonna be honest with you, I maybe there's

(14:58):
a maybe there's a a better venue where there's a
closer stadium to the hosting site than how close Duke's
Baseball Stadium is to the Durham Bulls Park, like I
would imagine in downtown Columbia, from from you know, South

(15:23):
Carolina's Baseball Stadium to Segra Park is probably a similar distance.
And if the SEC ever said okay, we're gonna we're
gonna farm out the SEC tournament to sites, a good
site to put it in would absolutely be something like

(15:46):
Columbia or maybe even Atlanta, and you have the Atlanta
Braves Stadium for the championship for the SEC, and then
you could possibly use like Georgia Tech Stadium as a
backup so that what you could do is play two
games at one time if necessary. And I'm not saying
that's what's happening here with the ACC tournament, but I

do think it. It places the seed for the thought
process behind. Okay, if we're gonna have a tournament like
this and we're gonna try to play it out in
this regard with you know, sixteen seeds and play through
the bracket, and we we have a weather situation, which

(16:27):
is beautiful today in Durham. But if you have a
weather situation or you have a game that goes to
extra innings, having a secondary stadium as a possibility to
go play a game in is not the worst idea
so that you could get a couple of games cranked
up at once. Now there, you know, after all the

(16:48):
taught we had yesterday about the tournaments and the changing
of the format. To me, there in lies the beauty
of doing this in Durham, because I don't know where else.
I mean, I have no idea. Like in Charlotte. The
Charlotte Knights have a stadium and the Atlantic Coast Conference,

(17:14):
the Atlantic Coast Conference offices are in Charlotte. But does
do the Charlotte forty nine ers have their own baseball stadium?
And if they do, Charlotte might also be a venue
where you could do this. Now we'll argue traffic in
Charlotte versus traffic in Durham. And listen, that whole area

(17:36):
up in North Carolina's pretty awful for traffic. Believe me,
I don't know why. Everywhere you go there is terrible.
And somehow I even had like avoid toll roads turned
on on my ways while I'm driving around. And guess what,
I got a letter in the mail said that I
owed two dollars to a toll. I didn't even see
a toll. I didn't see a place I would even

(17:59):
pay a toll. It's not like I ran through dollar
fifty pop put a quarter in. It wasn't anything like that.
I just got home and there was a bill. I
paid it. I paid it. I'm probably getting rooked by
the state of North Carolina. But either way, my buddy
also got one. He was like, man, I didn't even
see a toll. I'm like, right, I have avoid tolls

turned on. I'll listen, here's how cheap I am. I'll
drive forty five extra minutes to not pay two dollars.
So rest assured if I get a bill for a toll.
Something squirrely North Carolina. Something is a little bit fishy everyone, everyone,
I have something to say I'm not happy a zero

I don't know what the game looks like when you're hearing,

fifth at the ACC Tournament between Virginia Tech and Clemson,
and the Tigers hold a three to one lead against
the Hokies. So that's currently what's going on all right.
Yesterday I said, hey, we're gonna listen to John Ripman.

Clemson gets ready. You know, it's the Clemson softball team

gets ready to open play tomorrow out in Austin, Texas. Well,
it's gonna be a little late night affair for all
you Clemson softball fans, but you'll manage. It is again
a super regional, but the Tigers are on the road
at Texas and that game gets cranked up at nine

by the reporters, But I do want to play this
audio with the reporters question because it's too Maddie Moore,

who's a senior and that was her final home game
at Mitwater Stadium, in that victory over Kentucky, and the
question is so emotional for her that she has to
draw a huge deep breath and also kind of gives
a little nervous chuckle as John Ritman patter on the
back when she was asked about what it means to

play in that final game at mcwater Stadium For Maddie,
this is.

Your last game, you have mcquarters stand and I guess
what is that venu meant.

For you for your career?

I mean, I just I love Clemson so much and
I love mcwarter. I mean when I came here for
my first Tampa wasn't even built yet, so it's kind
of awesome just to see everything just full circle moment
for sure for me. And I'm just so excited that
I got to win Regionals at McWorter, which is just
which is not a lot of which not a lot
of people can say. So I'm like really grateful. I'm

proud that I was able to do it with Team six.

So Clemson again advancing a great answer. We have a

that was asked was about the fact that they wore
their uniforms home on the plane after winning the ACC
championship game and how long they planned to continue to
where their uniforms after winning that Clemson regional.

I think it was more than orange shirt. We got
the championship orangehard. I mean we were that everywhere we
wore to to like after the game, we were when
we got home. We wore to the watch or the
watch show, yeah, the selection show. And I mean we
couldn't get them off either or those hats either.

Oh yeah, I mean we have a lot of sparkling
juice and water on us right now, so they might
come off a little sooner.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
But John Ripman was also asking about Taylor Pipkin's home
run and just how clutch she's been yeah this week.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
In the wind was not favorable for home runs. It
was cutting across, blowing from right to left, so I
knew she got it up high enough and it was
going towards left center. So being a golfer, I just
hoping the wind caught it a little bit and and uh,
you know, it's it's it was a close one. But
that that girl has come up so clutch this year.
And uh, you know, I remember recruiting her. There was

(23:49):
nothing really that stood out about her except that she
would make plays and she would get clutch hits. And
uh so when I when I started following her around,
I just I nicknamed her the you know, like just
knew that I wanted her in our program. And she
stepped up so big this year for us. I couldn't
be more proud of a player than I am of
Taylor Pipkins.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
Senior Maddie Moore was also asked about when she attended
Clemson softball camp while she was in high school and
what that experience was like.

Speaker 5 (24:17):
The camp for me was on the turf field behind
the field already, and I remember it being so hot
and it being the first time I was ever in
South Carolina. So it was it was a weird experience,
but I mean I loved it here, so there wasn't
it wasn't very hard to convince me to come here.
I was a junior, junior in high school.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Ripman was also asked if he feels like his team's
playing the best over the final couple of games of
the season.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
Yeah, I do. I mean anytime you can win two
championships back to back, a ACC championship and run the
gamut of University Virginia Virginia Tech in Florida State, and
then to come and win a regional and I think
a lot of people had this as the regional with
the most parody. To come out with a big win
against USC Upstate, he's, you know, a great program, conference

(25:03):
champions and they fought their butt off in that Friday game,
and then to play Northwestern in a nine inning thriller,
you know, a pitcher's duel, and found a way to
win on a suicide squeeze, and then obviously today, I
mean everybody contributed one way or another to get that
championship here. That's that's a special group and you got
to be playing well to run that that two weekends

(25:24):
in a row.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
Last thing they were asked about was going to Texas
for the Super Regional and whether or not John Ridman
had talked the Swingey about playing out in Austin.

Speaker 5 (25:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (25:36):
I mean, University of Texas is a storied softball program,
and you know, we're looking forward to the to the weekend.
You know, I think it's it's going to be a
rowdy place to play, just like mcquarter. But mcworter's prepared
us for it. We've we've gone on the road, We've
played a very tough schedule. I just I know this
team will go in there and be ready to play.

(25:57):
And you know, certainly nothing's easy at this level. And
I've told our team all along. To get to where
we want to go, you got to beat really good teams.
And I think we're up for the challenge, and.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
I hope they are up for the challenge because it'll
be the Tigers and the Longhorns tomorrow night, nine o'clock.
It's a three game set, game one set for Tuesday,
and then we'll go from there. Now at the ACC Tournament,
the Clips of Tigers put up a couple of more
runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend

their lead. As Listy comes through again, picking up his
third and fourth RBI of the contest with a nice
shot out to left center field. The outfielders tried to
make a play on it, didn't it came off the wall.
Priest and Purify both scored, so Dominic Listy having a
big day for the Clemson Tigers right now, delivering with

two hits in three at bats and four runs batted
in to help Clemson lift to a five to one
lead as the Tigers and Hokies head to the top
of the sixth inning again, that's where I am. I
don't know where you are. I don't know where you're driving.
I don't know. Maybe you're listening tomorrow via the podcast,

That movie my cousin Vinny. So yeah, I got dreary duty.
So that means I'm probably you know, you kind of hope,
you kind of hope that you roll in and they
go well, we sorry we called you in for this.
We don't have anything. And I'm hopeful that because Memorial
Day is Monday, that the caseload will be light and

that there won't need to be some sort of selection
or that they'll they'll work things out behind closed doors
and we won't need to do any of that, uh rigamarole.
But yeah, so I'm gonna be out for Jury Duty.
And anytime I think of Jury Duty, I think of
the movie Jury Duty, and I think of My Cousin
VINNI because My Cousin Vinnie is an absolute classic. As

a matter of fact, my dad probably has that movie
memorized because there was a point where he did not
have cable at his house down at Frip Down at
Frip Island, and he had maybe two DVDs and one

(30:32):
of them was My Cousin Vinny. And the running joke
was they would come home from dinner or doing whatever
they were doing, and my dad and his wife would
sit down and they go, well, you want to watch
I don't know my cousin Vinny, And so they would
just throw that on and laugh. And I've seen this
so many times. As a matter of fact, it was
on the other day, and I tuned in and watched
pretty much the whole movie. I think, you know, Joe

Peshy is phenomenal in that movie, and just Fred Gwynn
playing the judge. But maybe one of the best moments
in that entire movie is when you know, Ralph Macchio
is one of the defendants. I don't want to give
away too much of the storyline, but his friend who

you know, finally just says, man, Vinnie doesn't know what
he's doing. He goes and gets another lawyer, and then
his lawyer seems like absolutely perfect, and then when he
goes to do the you know, the introductory speech or whatever,

(31:39):
his nerves get the best of him and he just
is stammering and stuttering all over himself, to the point
of where when he sits down, the other guy's like,
what have I done? Like, I didn't think it could
get worse than Vinnie, But this guy, when he's speaking
to the jury is just fumbling and bumbling all over himself.

(32:00):
But either way, either way, yeah, that's sort of the
situation that we're looking at in terms of me and
you next week. Now, my hope is we're off Monday
and Tuesday only and back for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

(32:21):
But just know, if I'm not here on Wednesday or
Thursday or Friday, what's going on? That will mean I
am likely in jury duty or at least sitting in
a room awaiting jury duty, which sounds quite frankly horrible.
But I will do my civic duty for fifteen dollars

(32:42):
a day or whatever the whatever that number ends up being,
all right, eight zero three four or five oho zero
zero eighty six. That is the text line in the

where I'll be now. Earlier this week, Clemson did put
out a release announcing the situation with the Tigers basketball class,
adding six transfers and one player to the freshman class.
That news coming out, Brad brown All on his staff
announced the editions of Nick Davidson, who played three seasons

at Nevada while redshirting his freshman season. Davidson arrives at
Clemson as a redshirt senior. They also added Carter Welling,
who played one season at U c Irvine. In one
