Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yes Columbus, An Experienced Columbus podcast keeps you in the
know of what's happening in the art City Columbus. The
number one soccer team, the number three beer city, a
top ten culinary destination with the largest concentration of fashion
professionals in the US. Join us each week with special
guests for an inside look at a destination that invites
(00:23):
visitors and locals alike to explore. By the end of
each episode, you'll be asking yourself, can all of this
really exist in one city? Yes Columbus. Well, welcome back
to another episode of Yes Columbus, An Experienced Columbus Podcast.
I'm one of the hosts of this awesome podcast and
fun podcast by the way, every week I'm Boxer, along
(00:46):
with my co host Sarah, who is back with us,
and boy, we have a lot of fun planned today
for this one we do.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Boxer, It's so good to see you, and thanks again
for all of your amazing co hosting during this season.
But we've had some amazing conversations so far, and trust us,
there's even more to come. Be sure to tune in
as we continue sharing the stories that make Columbus thrive.
Before we hop into this week's interview, it's time for
(01:13):
our headliner segment, where we highlight a recent story or
accolade about Columbus. Midwest Living published a fun story recently
about unique breweries and distilleries where you can spend the
night and doghouse. Columbus Hotel was highlighted. If you haven't
already been to brew Dog's Canal Winchester location, be sure
(01:35):
to check it out. It's the world's first craft beer
hotel and guests can enjoy a welcome beer at check in,
fully stock fridges with brew Dog and other local craft
beers beer on tap in each room. It's awesome. Also,
at their campus there's been an interactive there is an
interactive craft beer museum. So it is pretty cool and
(01:57):
certainly invite our listeners to check it out.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
So, Sarah Yah, I have a longtime friend of mine
from Minnesota and he had texted me the link to
brew Dog and specifically he was asking about the beer
on tap in each room. He's like, is this legit?
Like is this a joke or is this legit? I'm like,
it's legit. You should come sometime, come and visit. He
is like, consider it done. I'm there that's awesome, No,
(02:22):
it is.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
It is really amazing, and anyone we have spoken to
that has stayed there, we've of course checked it out ourselves.
Absolutely has an amazing time boxer. It's time for our
behind the boat segment right, and today we have an
incredible guest joining us, Josh Sarber, Chief Experience Officer at Kosai,
(02:43):
of course, our Center of Science and Industry award winning
museum here in Columbus. Josh is the visionary behind the
unforgettable guest experiences at KOSAI. From ideation to installation, he
oversees exhibits, events, and attractions to ensure that are engaging, educational,
and immersive. Since joining Kosai in two thousand and three,
(03:06):
Josh has worn many hats, leading public and member programs
while expanding the science center's reach. Josh Welome Yes Columbus Podcast.
It's so great to have you here.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Great to be here. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
It is seriously so good to see you again. I
think the last time I saw you, Josh, you were
in one of the You were at my studio at
the iHeart Studio. We had a lot of fun doing
some experiments and I had no idea how long you
had been at Kosa. You've been there now over twenty years.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
That's right, over twenty years.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
You know. I started my career there at Kosai and
it's been a blast the entire time. You know, I
say that we have some of the best jobs at Kosai,
and I can look at my title and say, yes,
I do job.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
You really do. So tell us about the journey and
how it started with Kosai.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
You know, for me, I started, as we said, twenty
years ago and coming out of college from the Ohio
State University.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
H I.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Oh, right, So coming out from with my masters, I
taught for about a year in formal education and I
thought there could be more, you know, there's more of
an opportunity for me in that lifelong learning, uh sort
of environment, and so I looked for that opportunity coming
out of college and in that formal education and just
found Kosai to be the right fit for me.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
So, you know, I was thinking too, this this isn't
just and you probably correct people right away when they say, oh, so,
what's your job, Well, it's where I work, but it's
it's not just a job like your your family. It's
a it's a family thing for you. Too, tell us
about that.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
When I first started at Kosai is a part time
camp counselor. It's a it's almost like a romance novel.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
I met my wife there. You know.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Oh, I didn't know that.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Both camp counselors. So, uh.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
There's a funny story where she invited me to go
up in a hot air balloon with her that we
were showing off to the kids at the camp that day,
and it was at the end of the day and
she's like, I'm scared to death I go up in
the hot air balloon.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Will you go with me?
Speaker 4 (05:07):
And I was like just oblivious to what was happening,
And so she invites me and we go up together
and we're looking down and she's squeezing me really tight,
and I'm thinking, well, she's just really afraid. Well, nineteen
years later, she reveals to me that actually she was
just trying to, you know.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Get a little closer. That's pretty romantic.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
I love it is.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Yeah, So, you know a little bit later, we had
our son and we both now work Melissa and I
both work at Cosai. She's the senior director of guest
Relations and it's a fantastic work and professional relationship and
personal relationship. But our son also volunteers there as well. Wow,
he just went off to college, so he's going to
(05:49):
turn it away in the summer. So but every year
he comes back and volunteers and spends time with us
there at cosaide.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Is a family affair, it is.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
And for the record, your wife hit on you first.
That's right.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
We'll say that we should have.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Had we should have we should have. So, Josh, how
do you and your team at KOSAI create these immersive
science experiments because experiences, I should say, because you know,
over the years we've been seeing and highlighting COSI has
more of these immersive experiences.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
You know, immersion is one of the things that you're
seeing a lot around in the environment. You know, whether
it's the you know, you go to a museum or
you go to an attraction we were talking earlier about
like Disney World, Yeah, you know, going to an amusement park.
Those are amazing experiences and how can we bring those
that inspiration to Kosai. We like to say that anyone
can come up with a great idea and that inspiration
(06:45):
can come from anywhere. Just take a look around your environment. Again,
whether it's an attraction or just the natural environment, where
can we find that inspiration to really bring in an
immersive experience and provide that experience for you at Kosai
in the museum itself and really transport you to somewhere new,
no matter where that could be, whether it's the depths
of the ocean or deep into the universe.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Josh, is it usually these immersive experiences? Is it usually
a show that's traveling that you can and not everyone
can get them, but you can get or are you
guys always on the prowl to try and create your
own as well?
Speaker 4 (07:22):
You know, we're always on the lookout for the best
great guest experience, you know, as you said, we find
those traveling exhibits and they're fantastic for us, but we
like to create themersion ourselves as well. Yeah, so you're
going to see some of those experiences opening up soon
where Kosai is actually part of the design and build itself,
and so that's unique for us, a great opportunity. The
permanent experiences you see at Kosai like progress, a very
(07:44):
immersive experience that was created by your COSI, by your team,
and continue to develop those new experiences year after year
to continue to make sure that we have great new
experiences for our guest.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Wow, so many talented team members at Cosai and Josh,
how many Peace bold as Kosai welcome.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
On an annual basis, we see over seven hundred and
fifty thousand guests. Wow, that's just on site. But we
also have our engaging outreach experience as well that puts
us well over a million.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Well and then you're science kits too, but you're shipping nationwide.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
That's right, not only nationwide but internationally international.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Right, that's so awesome.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
I heard that they're global now, the science kits.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
That's correct.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
We've had great experiences where we've been able to go
to places like London, Manchester, We've been over in Dubai,
in Italy and Malta with great partnerships with individuals from
our government but other governments as well, welcoming us in
and excited to have us be a part of their experience.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
All right, Josh Sarver is with us. He is this
week's guest on Yes, Columbus by the way, perfect timing
to have you in because of this incredible accolade. You know,
Columbus continues to rack up national championships, you know, between
Ohio State and now KOSAI once again has been named
the number one science museum of the country by USA
(09:00):
to Day's ten Best Readers Choice Awards. It is the
fit time, though, right and earning this honor the top
spot for twenty twenty five. Tell us a little bit
more about this achievement and how COSI is going to celebrate.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
You know, it's exciting that this is an award that
isn't necessarily given by an individual or a government or
an entity.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
It's by the people.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
The people have voted and they put us up there
a number one once again, not once, twice, three, four,
five times, five times voted number one. So I just
want to say thank you to the Columbus community. But
it's also bigger than that, because, as you said before,
we're nationwide, we're international. The things that we do, whether
it's learning lunchboxes or a Doctor B in three series,
(09:43):
it's online or QD with Doctor B in partnership with
WSU and public television, and.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
The award winning right right now many many.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Times as well.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
So all those things put together really brings the community
and it's a larger community that's speaking on our behalf
and we really appreciate that because we're up against some
really hitters are Frago, San Francisco, New York, amazing museums.
I've had the privilege to visit those museums and talk
to those individuals. They're great people, great immersive experiences. I'd
encourage you to go to them. But right here in
(10:13):
downtown Columbus, you've got number one.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Number one. We love that. So Josh Kosai plays such
a vital role in the Columbus community. How do you
see Cosi's impact beyond just the exhibits and events.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
You know, we've talked about it a little bit already.
Those learning lunch boxes. Again, had the privilege to go
to a community such as Oakland. What a great community,
but it's in need, and in partnership with those museums
out there, we were able to distribute learning lunch boxes
and a unique experience and highlight that science center in
that community. Because we know that those individuals might not
(10:46):
be able to visit Kosai, but they can see the resources.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
In their own community.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
So it's stuff like the learning lunch boxes and QD
doctor b our online resources through COSI Connects that we
like to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to
gauge with CO because we know that they might not
be able to make it to us physically, but we're
out there doing off site and online engagements as well.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
I love that, Josh. Can I ask you just on
a side note here with this latest accolade and you
mentioned Chicago, you mentioned you know, other science museums, what
do you think the secret sauce is for people flocking
and traveling to sign then voting at number one?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Again?
Speaker 1 (11:23):
What do you think it is?
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I think for me, it's.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
The combination of not just immersion into the environment, but
it's the hands on component as well, that engagement with
our team members and the actual exhibits themselves. You know,
it's one thing to look at an object, but then
to actually get your hands on it or do something
related to that object that's engaging and it really teaches
you about science at your level. So I think that's
(11:47):
what makes the difference for us. We meet people where
they are with real and relevant experiences.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Can I also add something else I would call personally
the Disney effect, And what I mean by that is
I'm I never met an employee, I've never met anyone
that's working at Kosai, that wasn't smiling, that wasn't having fun.
They're all passionate, and that that draws me to want
to bring my kids back even more because I'm having fun,
(12:13):
they're having fun, and you're allowing us to have fun.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
Seriously, that's right, Well, thank you for identifying that. It's
it's great to see the team every day. There's sort
of that happiness and that excitement to make the next
big move, you know, for our community, and just the
passion behind what they're doing. The experiences and the projects
that we have right now are super exciting for them
personally and professionally.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Yeah, the customer service is just so impeccable at COSI,
So kudos to you, Josh. I want to switch gears
a little bit here some of the new and upcoming
Kosai experiences, the unofficial Galaxies that's launching on May tenth. Now,
I know I'm gig for it, but I know you
also have. This experience is something that's near and due
to you as a Star Wars fan.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
You know, growing up, I grew up with Star Wars
like a lot of us. I had the toys when
I was a kid, and now as I'm an adults
and I bring my son up through it, of course
I'm decorating in his room and my imagination of what
don't you want this? And he's like, yeah, I guess,
but you know I love this as a kid, I
love this as an adult. I've seen a lot of
great experiences and someone wants to ask me what would
(13:18):
be the next best traveling exhibition that you could bring
to Kosai. We've had a lot, everything from tut to
Marvel to Titanic in recent years, and now Unofficial Galaxies.
As a Star Wars fan, what how much better could
it get?
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Oh, we are so excited about this one.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Josh, you have to tell us what what are we
going to experience when we walk in to the Unofficial
Galaxies exhibit?
Speaker 4 (13:40):
You know, as we like to say, we are immersive experience,
and so we're going to take you to other places,
other planets, other universes to see what it's like to
be there. We're going to surround you with those costumes
and those props in full sized vehicles that you wouldn't
see anywhere else with this travel that's right. So for Kosai,
our team is super excited about being able to build this.
(14:03):
You know, it's not just your normal travel exhibit where
we just invite it in and install it. We're co
creating this together in partnership.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
I'm just thinking about the legendary characters, the well the
full skill starships you're talking about the costumes. By the way,
are we allowed to dress up?
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Absolutely? I encourage you.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Can we bring our lightsabers?
Speaker 3 (14:24):
Lightsabers are allowed? Leave your blasters at home?
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Okay, Okay, that is good to know. Okay, So is
there something can I just put you on the spot.
Is there something that you're looking forward to to see
them with your family?
Speaker 3 (14:40):
You know, obviously I'm excited about this exhibition. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:44):
We have a lot of great experiences coming into this
this great city, and so I'm excited about everything that
Columbus has to offer our guests. And so, you know,
whether it's coming down to Kosai or going to the
Art Museum, there's a lot of great experiences here. You know,
Kosai right now is getting ready to switch over to Sharks,
which is another great exhibition. So I'm excited to see
that in We're doing some othermersive experiences, but there's other
(15:06):
institutions here as well in Columbus, Ohio. That it's a
great weekend experience, so come on down.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Yeah, yeah, I love that.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
And Josh, so when does the unofficial Galaxies exhibit open
and how long do we have to check it out?
Speaker 4 (15:19):
You have May tenth through Labor Day of this year
to check it out, so it's a limited time engagement.
We do expect it to sell out given that limited
amount of time, so do buy your tickets early, which
will go on sale shortly.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
All right, well, that's great and we'll be sure to
share that on Experience Columbus dot com and our channels
as well, So Josh. Another big focus for Kosai coming
up is the Kosai Science Festival, which has become a
staple in Columbus. What can people look forward to this
year from April thirtieth through May third, that's coming right up.
Can you tell us what it's all about, what's new
(15:52):
and what we can.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Expect each year.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
We love to kick out the festival season with the
Kosai Science Festival, So unlike your normal festival where you
come down town for those experiences over a course of
a few days. We like to say that science is
everywhere for everyone in your community. So there are community
events in those first three days, so April thirtieth through
May second, it's everywhere except for Kosai. So in your
(16:14):
own backyard. Go to your local metro park. I'm sure
you'll find an experience there, go to the local baker.
You'll see those experiences listed on our website for you
to consider. There's going to be over eighty events so
far have applied and we're excited to have. But then
that last day, the Big Science Celebration. That's where we
invite everyone to come downtown and you'll see booths as
(16:34):
far as the eye can see, tents full of hands
on experiences, everything from Honda, one of our great partners,
bringing their vehicles down to ap putting people up in
the bucket trucks. It's amazing to see them and our
great sponsor, Battel, stepping up and doing hands on experiences.
So it's one of my favorite experiences for the year.
As the executive behind it, I have a great team
(16:56):
who's able to deliver upon this. The entire team rallies
behind it, and the community shows up. Last year we
saw over forty thousand people downtown. Wow, and the comments
that we get is. I couldn't see it all. It's
on both sides of the building. I only got halfway done.
I need more time, and so we've expanded the time
to encourage our guests to spend more time with us,
(17:17):
but encourage you all to come down and check it out.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
You have to be yeah, and you have to be
so proud to see this festival just explode over the years.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
You know what emotionally makes me so proud of this
is that in twenty nineteen is when we kicked it off.
The second year was the pandemic, and we went virtual
with it. Our partners rallied behind it, and we were
able to put experiences online that actually increased the outreach
to a million individuals for that year. And that just
shows you the power of partnerships that are behind COSAI
(17:49):
in our community. And so when we finally brought it
back physically and see the guests come and rally and
go from twenty to thirty to forty and I hope
fifty thousand and individuals downtown experiencing right here in your
community that science is for everyone and everywhere well, and
you're making.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
It so accessible too. That's not even including all the
community events at the kickoff of the festival that you
just mentioned. So this is so exciting and we can't
wait for the Science Festival to come back to Columbus
here in the next couple of weeks. But Josh, I
have to ask if you could create your dream exhibit
for Kosai. It sounds like Star Wars is pretty unofficial
Galaxies is pretty up there, but no budget limits. What
(18:31):
would it be and why.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
You know you're right unofficial Galaxies, But you're putting me
on the place.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
So I'll select another.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
One good question by wated to that is really taking
people out into space, into the places where maybe they
might never get maybe our children will get there and
their children's children will get there. But can we take
you to outer space and show you what it's like
on another planet? And I think if we can do that,
if we can create an immersive experienerience like that that's
(19:01):
hands on engaging and talks about the ecology and the
impact on other planets and what that would be like,
I think that is the experience that I'm super excited about,
and I hope that in the next few years or
so that I can deliver upon that.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Oh that would be awesome, and we're getting closer and closer.
You know, we could see Americans on set foot on
Mars in the next ten, fifteen, twenty years.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
You know, it's exciting, you know, like I said, our
children might have that opportunity, So how can we make
that accessible to everybody? And so images like from the
James Web we can see these beautiful nebulas. What would
it be like to be there immersed in that experience?
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Super credible.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Well, I'm just taken in by the conversation. I'm like, yes,
I would love to do that, but no, you absolutely
have our support, Josh and making this happen. So Boxer
and I are there to support in any way we can.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Yes, absolutely, you know, Josh, we're unfortunately nearing the end
of our podcast, but I wanted to ask you if
you don't I have a fun question. Not that actually, I
think a lot of these questions have been a lot
of fun, but an interesting science fact that always amazes
people when you tell them, because I'm sure you get
hit up all the time. Hey, Josh, tell me something
I don't know about science.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Well that's great, let's do this one. Take a look
at the back of your hand on the back of
your hand. There are more cells in the back of
that hand than there are people in this world. But
in every cell that you have, there are ten, at
least ten bacterial cells.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Now, don't worry. I saw your face.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
I'm scared.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
Some of them are harmful, some of them are helpful,
and those helpful things, the balance between those is what
makes it unique for us is humans in this world
and this ecosystem.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Can I give you one more? Yes?
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Please? If you're looking to outer space the Milky Way,
you see that beautiful ribbon of stars, there are more
trees on this planet than there are stars in the
Milky Way galaxy. Interesting.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
I would have never guessed that.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
I've actually never heard that either.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
No, I've never heard that before.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
E gives you an idea of the scale and scope
of what we are and where we are within the universe,
and that's what Kosai does really well. That was wow moments,
those aha moments that probably are getting you thinking, hmm,
maybe I should learn a little bit more. All about
lifelong learning. Every static it's all about what I'm all about.
So I hope it works out great.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Yeah, No, I love it. Thank you so much. So
Josh We're gonna switch gears now for our last two segments.
Our next one is called Columbus Classics. This podcast is
all about uncovering what's new, but we also love the
tried and true places and experiences. Can you tell us
about a classic Columbus experience you love? It could be
(21:48):
a neighborhood, a restaurant, or anything.
Speaker 4 (21:51):
You know. As I was growing up, I went to
my grandmother's house in Gahanna and we would take the
walk down past the golf course and get onto the
river's edge. And that's a fantastic personal memory for me.
And seeing the development of the river's edge there in
Gahanna and that community itself. They're real, you know, the
(22:12):
big care down there, and that to me is something
that I like to go back to personally as a
memory after the passing of my grandmother. And so that's
something that I encourage people to take a look at.
You know, what are those things in their community that
they can connect with and find that real passionate community
that get behind.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
And so I look forward to experiences like that. I
love that.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Oh, I completely get that one Josh. Before we go,
as we wrap up here, just one more quick segment,
what are you saying yes to in Columbus this year?
Speaker 4 (22:44):
You know, I've always a little bit held back on
doing art workshops and wow, so why you know, it
just wasn't my cup of tea. But what I've found
through the Science Festival was some good exposure to different artists.
We were talking earlier about a Dane glass artist that's
off of South High Street and he does fantastic work.
Glass access in the work that they do and our
(23:07):
Columbus Museum of Art are fellow peers. They're doing great
workshops to consider, and so I'm excited about actually jumping
into that. There's one coming up but the National Veterans
Memorial where they're doing a Sid Solomas right, it's right,
and so it's called paint and sip.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
I love the idea of I've done those in the past.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
I'm not sure how good the art work's going to
be after sipping a little bit, but same, I'm excited
about jumping into art workshops. You know, we usually like
to say stem is something we get behind science. Technology.
