Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now let's go back to the broadcast booth.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
The NDY Bay Lock Christ Box here at Elliott Ballpark,
Yukon of winter today eight to six over Seaton Hall.
Final totals eight eleven and one for Yukon. They left
five runners on base, six nine and two for Seaton Hall,
they left fourteen on base. As we get to our
game recap of this one, each team scored a run
in the first inning as both leadoff men got on
(00:26):
board with singles. Aden Robbins would score on a chopper
in the infield by Jimmy Brennan. Meanwhile, Tyler Minnick would
tie the game with an RBI single playing Rob Rispoli.
We stayed one to one going into the third inning,
and it started with Rispoli reaching base on an error
by the shortstop Caleb spur then fly to center before
(00:48):
Ryan Daniels lost one for the Huskies in the left
hand batters box to kick the pitch of the swag
fly ball down the right field line.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
It's got plenty of distance, Is it fair? Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It is hold run Ryan Daniels. Two run shot for Daniels.
That made it three to one Yukon, and it didn't
stay that way. For long after Tyler Minnick grounding out
the third, aid and Doherty with a single stole second,
and then it was Brian Padilla's turn to swing the
(01:21):
bat for a home run.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
But this one a little different than the first one.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Padia Sky's one center field going back as Soldra fighting
off the sun, lost it in the sun and bounces
off the wall. Run scores and Padilla's gonna be a
third and they're gonna wave him around for an inside.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
The parker and he will get it.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Aj Soldier had all sorts of problems in that high
sky where it's not all blue, it's a lot of cloudiness,
and he lost it and it's an inside the parker
for Padilla.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
And that would make it five to one Yukon at
that point. Through three innings, Hansen was going pretty well
for the Pirates, as he would shut down Yukon Over
the course of the next few innings. He would go six,
giving up five runs on six hits. He'd walk one,
strikeout four, giving up three earned runs. Problem for Yukon
(02:19):
pitching today. They dodged themselves in and out of trouble
all day as walks became a problem all day. West
Finn had one, Alejandro had two. Seat Hall would get
one back in the fourth inning on a basis loaded
walk before Finn would come in for Charlie West and
get a big strikeout. Husky's again got out numerous breaks.
(02:40):
Alejandro came in to pitch, he walked the first two
guys while he walked after giving up a line drive out,
walk the next two, and then Brady Aftam came in,
promptly walked a guy, struck out and then got to
pop up the third to end the inning. And then
they would add a run in the eighth when Aj
(03:00):
Soldier hit a solo home run to right with one
outs and we were at.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Five to three at that point.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
So in the bottom of the eighth inning, Tyler Minnick
leads the inning off with a double. Aiden Doherty Brian
Pidia both strikeout, Bowl Root works a walk, and then
Yukon's catcher from old Saybrook, Connor Lane, gave Yukon what
proved to be the winning margin of victory to two.
On the way Lane swings and drives it left field
(03:29):
deep way back, gone over the Yukon bullpen and an
eight three Huskies lead as Connor Lane goes yard and
that might just about do it here this afternoon. He
did not miss that two to two pitch, drove it
over the bullpen straight away left and it's.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Eight three Huskies. But they weren't done yet, the Pirates.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
They would score three in the ninth inning, and then
a review play grounded the third Brian Paddie with a
high throw, but Tyler Minnick after review confirmed it got
the foot down and the Huskies come away with an
eight six victories. Jim Penders joins us, And you know
one of the questions I asked Jonesy, Jim before the
game today during this stretch, now has eight straight wins. Yes,
(04:16):
you've got eight straight wins, but they have not been
pretty a lot of them.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
No, No, And this weekend epitomize that we were really ugly.
This weekend we were winning ugly. But you know what
good teams play. Good teams win when they played poorly
and somehow we won. We can't expect to beat a
really good team playing the way that we did today.
I mean, seating halls struggling a little bit. They're scuffling,
and the way we went last night I think kind
of bled into today after we got up on them
(04:40):
but they didn't go away, you know. And of course
we're going to see those two Connecticut kids in the
ninth inning. There's no avoiding it. It's like, you gotta
be kidding me. We're going to see these two guys
back to back here, and but it's we're finding ways
to win. But it wasn't like you said, it wasn't pretty.
I think we gave up eighteen free nineties from the
mound alone, and then or is sixteen from the mound alone,
(05:02):
and then you know the error in the ninth inning.
Obviously a couple more free nineties. There can't we can't
play like that and expect to win. So got to
clean some things up on Monday. We're gonna get the
guys off tomorrow mental Health Day and the holiday, and
then back at it on Monday at practice.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Right, you got a busy week coming up here, Saint
John's on the weekend after two home games here. What
do you see from Charlie today? Very uncharacteristic from him today.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
It's seem yeah, you know, he's hey, he's new to this,
but he was fighting himself out there a lot, you know,
and fortunately they weren't hitting mistakes.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
He does not.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
You know, one of the things that we haven't been
too panicked about is that they he doesn't seem to
get hit hard ever, but he can he can't walk people,
and so we kind of had to live with it.
We didn't really have a choice. I mean, you saw
how thin our bullpen was. I mean, the guys that
we trust, We're gonna have to find other guys that
we trust in these next two games. I mean, we
can't be asking Brady after them and Sean Finn to
(05:56):
do what they did and back to you know, in
two games this week and Brady's on fumes there.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
I mean, he's he's not Brady after him.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
It's it's uh because we have to go to him
earlier because we don't trust anybody else to get out.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
And the only way that happens is it's earned. You know,
trust is earned.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
We're trying, we're trying other options, but we gotta you know,
we're gonna We're gonna have to try. We're gonna be
force fit feeding some of these guys innings on Tuesday
and Wednesday. That being said, you know, we could have
stacked some innings together, the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
I mean we didn't do anything offensively. We let Reich
kind of settle in and have his.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Way with us.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
And you know, we were playing with fire all day.
But they didn't seem to, you know, to really put
anything together until the ninth when Brady was really you know,
didn't have his legs anymore.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
You know, there's a theme here. When Ben is in
the booth, you guys seem to steal bases. Tennegan's gonna
be at nine to day and Robert Spoley, I mean,
he's been outstanding at the leadoff spot.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
He's really good. You know, we asked him, We asked
Robbie last year. We saw something in his character. He's
from a great family and he works really hard. He
never has a bad day. You'll never know if he's
over for four, four for four, for we're down ten nothing,
up ten to nothing, or tied, you know, five to
five by his body lang, which it's very very consistent.
And he's seventy two and sunny every day. And we
took him on the road last year. I think he
(07:09):
missed one road trip. But we knew we weren't going
to play him. We just wanted him to be around
because he just was an energy giver, was awesome in
the dugout on every chart, learned, you know, learned how
to go in and out of a hotel. Learn And
he probably knew that from his family. But we wanted
him around for the ride because we saw a bright
future for him. And he's done a super job playing
defensively a short stop. But we asked him last spring, hey, listen,
(07:31):
we want you to revamp your approach at the plate.
We need you on the plate, we need you being
able to wear pitches for HPPS. We want you to
be an absolute pest. In high school, I don't think
they asked them to do that. They asked them to
drive in runs. But we need to kind of build
a different player. He took the summer, had an awesome
summer at Amsterdam, New York where he was a star player,
and really took that forward into the fall and established
(07:51):
himself as a starting short stop but also a quality
offensive player who's just a pest in that leaf leadoff spot,
so tough to you know, he's got a small strike
zone and he doesn't seem to chase.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
Nearly as much as he used to.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
He had a nice weekend and like you said, he
can change the game with his legs too, so he's
got a bright future.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Here two big defensive plays too as well for him Connor.
I know you talked about him last night with Jonesy
and you on your wrap that everybody sees on Twitter.
Here comes up again today after a night game. Big
spot gets a base hit, smart base running, he reads
an air from the left fielder, gets a second base
but after a couple of strikeouts, biggest hit of the game,
get the margin of victory hit.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
You know, we're trying to steal a run there with
with a play that you know, I can't say it
on the air because there's an expletive in the name
of the play, but they have a bow fall down
at second base trying to get the catcher to throw
a second base and steal a run from third. Thank god,
he filed off a couple of pitches and we couldn't
have that play executed because the baseball gods were looking
(08:47):
out for us right there, because we get one maybe,
but you know, he finds a way to hit it
over the wall and did not miss that that hanging breaker.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
He looked. His whole game is confidence.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
You know, he needs to get more confident with with
his throwing because he's got great gifts there. You know,
I think he's complicated that a little bit. We've complicated
a little bit. I'm not going to give him all
the responsibility, but offensively, he's really since Biggie's play began,
he's really hitting the ball hard, really strong. Kid works
really hard. Needs to learn the nuances like today, you know,
(09:20):
he went to the wrong base when the first baseman
went to the orange base, He's got.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
To go to the white. You would have been called that.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
You know, there's little things that as a freshman we
have to continue to teach, but we kind of forget
sometimes because of his production that he is a freshman.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
So sometimes his performance.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Will remind us of that and you just point things out.
But he's very coachable and and you know, very talented.
Obviously Catoride Player of the Year in Connecticut. And but
it doesn't come easy. This is not just grade thirteen.
You know, there's there's some you're gonna take some lumps,
and there's a learning curve. And I think, you know,
when we get into late April, early May, there's no.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
Such thing as freshman anymore. And he's starting to come
into his
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Own all right, Jimmy, Happy Easter Banks is always the
same to you, yes, sir Jerdif
