Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, Robonni, Charlie and Lorien here, Welcome to Crook and
Chase Nashville Chats. Let me point out something, Loria. When
it comes to these Nashville chats that we put online,
we often refer to them as interviews with stars. They're
not really interviews, their visits because we like to sit
down to shoot the breeze about everything. We'll pick up
on items on the way into the studio and hit
him up with it. Which you're going to find out
(00:20):
what we did with Jordan Davis here, who's just I
s say the subject, but he's he's our guest on
this visit, our victim. Yeah, and I will say this
about Jordan Davis. He still has the best beard in
the business. You know. He's a shorter now, yeah, it is,
but he's always had this wonderful beard. I mean, it's
so thick and stickle pencil in there and it's gonna stick,
(00:41):
you know what I'm saying. It's one of those kind
of beards you couldn't do it none. Remember at the time,
oh gosh, I think it was at the CMA Awards.
We met up with him and he was self conscious
because he had used one of his wife's beauty products. Yeah,
it just picked it up and kind of put it
on his beard to moisturize. But it had sparkles, limits
(01:01):
it was it was kind of special. Of course, we
don't let him forget things like that. Oh no, we know.
But you know, we caught him in a good mood
and he has so many wonderful things to talk about,
including his recent number one hit. Why did you hear
the story about what my world spends around? Yeah, okay
about his wife, I'll just say That'll leave it at that, right. Well,
and my thing right now is I think with this
(01:22):
new album, Bluebird Days, it is the best work he
has done to date. Yeah, it really is. And as
a matter of fact, he had a lot of things
to be excited about. We pick up on things walking
into the studio, as I mentioned, right, and that's how
we began this conversation with Jordan. Hey, we'd like to
um start with a rumor that we heard you know
the thing? Well, see Lorian and I are connected. What
(01:46):
in the world is crushing it? Crushing his water bottles?
Good question? Why do you crush your water bottles when
you're done? Because on the bus I didn't do a
good job on that one. It's on the bus. It's
because it takes up a lot of room on the
trash can. Because we had to drink bottle water on
the bus because I don't have a bunch of money
(02:06):
like Luke Comes where I have like a filter system. Yeah,
so I have to drink water bottles. So hand me
that because how difficult is it for my little skinny hands. Oh,
it's not that that. And then what you do is
then you put the top on it and it stays crushed. Okay,
you crush it. Okay, sounds like my left knee. Wait
a minute, I'm crushing it and I'm topping it and
(02:27):
then it'll stay whoa see, now, how did I do?
That's great, That's exactly what you want. I'm going to
start the interview now because you're gonna have to go
peeting about five minutes. Look at all the empty SA rumors.
Oh yes, Lorien and I are well connected here on
the road. So we were understanding that you are excited
and thrilled to find out that Old Dominion is cutting
(02:49):
one of your songs and it's your first outside cut,
first ever outside cut. I'm still okay, you know what song.
Is it? It's called Freedom Like You? Oh, okay, they
just released it last night. Yes, because guess what we
just talked to them this morning. Did they say it
was gonna be a single? We would have asked, yeah,
(03:09):
all right, So so how do you in the business
say thanks to the guys? Just a wave and hey?
You know, I know, I wish I could have gone
in and said hey, because I passed him, and I
saw Jeff and I saw Matt for a second, but
they were trying to get some stuff figured out, so
I waited at him. I text Trevor last night and
just told him how grateful I am because I know, like,
you know, we've written a bunch of songs and um,
(03:31):
I've had songs recorded by other people that they never
make the record. And I remember when Trevor told me,
He's like, hey man, we love that Freedom Like You
song and we recorded it and I was like, oh great,
and he was like I think we're gonna release it,
and I was like, I've been there before, Trevor. But
last night he texted me said, hey man, Freedom Like
(03:51):
You comes out at midnight, so oh man, I was like, dude,
that's and two like you know, even more. You know,
those guys took me out on tour. Trevor was one
of the first guys that started write with my brother.
Early on. I used to go see Old Dominion at
the basement, like the old Basement before they moved to
the East Side, when they were still just like you know,
(04:13):
trying to get things going to the club. Yeah, and
then took my brother out on tour, took me out
on tour. So then you add in the fact that
like they they're the first ones ever cut one of
my songs, is pretty pretty cool. Well, and I have
to tell you this, sitting here listening to you talk
about them a couple just a couple of years ago,
just before COVID, I mean, they were getting number one songs,
(04:37):
winning all kinds of awards. But Matthew told us, he said,
you know, this is not just blowing smoke. He says,
we really have an inferiority complex. We just don't We
don't feel like we've made it. We don't feel like
we're in there. Yeah. Do you have that same feeling,
I mean, even though you've had enormous success, do you
still have that feeling like, gee, am I am I
(04:58):
there yet? Yeah? I don't know what it is, like
I've had some conversations with artists. I don't know. I mean,
I don't know. Maybe it's because we're all insecure and
I don't want to speak. Okay, I need to stop
saying we're all I'm Maybe I'm insecure, you know, even
though I like make music and put it out and
hope people like it, Like that's setting up for disaster.
(05:20):
Yeah yeah, I think though what I've come to talk about,
or at least me and Thomas Rhett always talk about this,
and Thomas, I'm sorry that I'm bringing into this, but
it's like the comparison game, you know. I think that
there's always somebody, or at least for me, where it's
like there's always somebody that's probably doing a little bit better,
but it's not like you're doing it bad. And I
(05:42):
remember coming into Whenever I was torn with old opinion,
and there's a couple of arenas we played where like
they weren't sold out, but there was still every bit
of like six or seven thousand people in there, and
I was like, dude, I can't get eleven hundred people
to show up to a club, and you guys are
mad that you didn't hell out at nine thousand and
there's seventy eight hundred people in here, so it's kind
(06:03):
of like, I don't know, it's it's a weird. You know.
One of my big things has been going forward is
just like, you know, stay in my lane, be grateful
for the show that I'm playing, and to really kick
the comparison game of the curb. All right, Speaking of
instag I can't tell you why you're insecure. I mean,
you got this big hit song, you know what what
(06:24):
my world spends around. Yeah, and the person you wrote
it Ford didn't get it. Yeah, didn't get it. Did
you see your wife Kristen when you first played it
for oh you and You're and your co writers? If
this is my wife? Yeah, she didn't pick up on it.
Never picked up on it, never like And two my
favorite thing was she asked me what the back forty is.
(06:46):
She was like, you know, back forty view on our
piece of ground. Doesn't know what back forty is. She's like,
what is it? Not only did she not know what
back forty was, this song was at like number fifteen
in the country on the charts, and I was like,
you're what have you been saying, whatever, what do you think.
I was like, it's not even like you asked me
that the first time you heard it. Did you know
(07:06):
what it was at all? No? She goes, what's back
forty like? And I was like, what are you talking about?
She's like, you know how you say back forty in
that song? I was like, oh, my single right now?
That song. She's like, yeah, what does that mean? The
one that advised your stuff? Yeah, the one, the one
that makes Christmas go. I was shocked. I started filming
(07:34):
the tail end of it and she got mad. She's like,
stop filming me. She like hates on a but yeah,
I had to explain to her what the back forty
acres of? Well, will you explain this to me? Because
I've seen the video? So what is the purpose? How
it has nothing to do? What is the purpose, manly
man that you are? I'm shaking a beer before you
(07:57):
drink it. Well, So I had a bunch of buddies
that we had a bunch of shows in Montana, and
we filmed that video in between a run of shows.
So I already had some friends up there and we
were just gonna go fish and hang out. So I
was shaking that to get it on somebody. Somebody was
on the somebody was on the tail end of somebody.
(08:17):
I was going to open that and probably poured all
over my buddy, Caleb. Okay, that's probably where that was going.
But it ended up all over your face. Yeah. I
ended up just spraying all over my face. Caleb came
was pretty fast, so he's probably out ready. What did
everybody think? It's like, what is he doing? Yeah, there's
there's a couple and then there's another one where a
scene there's a scene where we push our buddy down
(08:40):
in the in this like there's actually awesome river up
there that we were fishing him and we pushed him down.
That wasn't planned either. Oh well, oh my goodness, you're
dangerous to do a video with. Yeah, the words getting
out that, Uh, you got gotta be on your toes whenever,
whenever the video, whenever cameras are around. Okay, Coming up
next on We Can Chase Nashville Chats with Jordan Davis,
(09:02):
the big night of the CMA Awards that changed his
life and his career. Actually, and way do you hear
about his first big recording contract? LORI and and I
can't recall ever hearing about something like his deal that's
all the way. How high are you still flying? Song
of the freaking Year? I mean, like, you know, I
(09:26):
didn't expect that that night. I honestly did not think
that we had a shout at winning that. I feel
you know that we were already kind of on the
tail end of some of those songs, one of the
oldest songs in the category, So I was kind of
just like, hey, either way, win or lose, that song
has changed my life. I'm super proud of it. So
when Reba McIntyre called my name, which also is crazy, yeah,
(09:52):
name dropper, you know, I was shocked. And then like
even after that, you know, dear friend of mine and
the girl that signed me to my record deal sent
me a messages the next morning and just named all
the previous winners of c A Song of the Year. Wow,
I like you brought tears some of the songs that
are in there, and he stopped loving her a day.
(10:13):
You know House That Built Me, which I think is
one of the most perfectly written songs. Um, yeah, it's
it's it's unreal, it's inspiration. Yeah, you take it and
run from here. Absolutely speak all right, looking at the
songs on here. Um, first of all, I love um.
Let's see which one was it? Two? Sound too late?
(10:36):
I thought you had a great vocal on that Thank you.
I like that is the Daniel Bradberry. Do it going
to be a single? I know you put it out
there and let people hear about it. Yeah. Now we uh,
I wanted to, you know, do something with Danielle. We
did a Folds of Honor event one night and Danielle uh,
she debuted her song break My Heart Again, and I
(10:56):
ended up, I think me and Jimmy Allen and I
think we ended up said like, you know, it was
an auction benefit thing, and I said, hey, if if,
if they can come together and donate five thousand dollars
and Folds of Honor, will you sing that song again?
And I mean, like that there five thousand dollars. So
she sang it again right there, and I remember leaving
that night being like, I want to do something with Danielle,
(11:19):
like I just love her voice. I love her. And
so that's how Midnight Crisis. But it won't be a single.
We're gonna do that on our tour. She's touring me
next year so we'll come together and do a cool
moment with that. But now two sons too late. Maybe
a single, but Midnight Crisis won't. I gotta tell you
(11:39):
to me, this collection of songs that you had put together,
it's kind of like, um like, and I'm not being blasphemous,
but it's kind of like a bible to me, a
different kind of bible. Wow, that's special, all sorts of
life lessons, confessing ways you're not perfect but wanting to
(12:01):
be better, how to live life in certain ways? What's important?
I mean, I mean, the list of what is in
this album just goes on and on. What kind of
mood were you? I mean, I'm sure it was created
over a long period of time, as our most albums,
(12:23):
but my goodness, this is a lot of fun but
a lot of meaning. Yeah, I appreciate you saying that
because I mean, it's definitely the most honest I've ever
been in writing. I wanted to. I really wanted to
say some things that I'm you know, some of my
like we said, like the Insecurities short fuses a song
(12:45):
on there where it's like, you know, I do have
a temper, And unfortunately the only people that see the
temper are the people I love the most, you know,
and you know, working on that and kind of, you know,
hoping to fix that going for the way I have
you money with money isn't real, Like it wasn't healthy,
(13:06):
you know, obviously Bluebird Days, you know, kind of going
back and touching on divorce and how special marriage is
and um, yeah, a lot of songs that I think
that you know, I said it with Home State, I
don't know if I'll be able to get to make
another one of these. I'm gonna make the best one
I can, and I feel like with this one, it's
just been like, hey, I want to I want to
be real and I want to be honest. I don't
(13:27):
know if it's gonna be the best record I ever do.
I don't know if you know, if people it's definitely
something it's gonna be out of left field for I
think a lot of my fans. But I'm proud of
it and I feel like we wrote a designers as
we could. When when you have a song the reaches
the top of the chart, do you instantly see the
effect of that on tour With crowd you know, you're
(13:49):
talking about the crowds a moment ago, you know, the
nine thousand Arena and all that. Can you see it
almost overnight? Oh yeah, I can almost like almost as
the chart position. I can. I can tell the difference
in the crowds as it climbs the charts on radio.
It's wild. So you know, I think you see you see, well, hey,
you see people like asking for it earlier. So it's
(14:12):
like I remember when by Dirty came out, like we
will be two songs into a headline of show. Now
they just keep screaming by Dirt and I'll be like, guys,
I'm gonna play that song, like I promise you it's
called but you don't. You don't have to scream it
after every song. But you know, I think it's cool
to me, which I think is special. You know, I
(14:33):
moved to song. I'm moved to Nashville to have songs
played on country radio, so um, that's to me. I
can kind of I love seeing that interaction. And I
can also, you know, kind of tell some songs that
work and don't work, you know, songs that have never
been released. I'll mix it into the set and I'm
about one hundred percent on being like, you know what, guys,
(14:54):
I don't. I don't know if that's right. And I'm
one hundred percent on the ones where I'm like, yep,
there's something to that song. So that's magic, isn't it.
It's great, it's you know, it's that's what makes live
music so special. Yeah. So what my world's beens around
that would be fifth number one? Yeah? So is that? Yeah?
(15:17):
Pretty amazing? Um So at this point, having sort of
you know, assessing your life and what's important, do you
just make time to celebrate moments like that? Number ones
are always you know, they get celebrated. We even celebrated
over to the Christmas holiday when it wasn't technically number one,
(15:39):
but it ended at number one on the chart. Yeah yeah, yeah,
me and christ and celebrated that. I mean, because they're
hard to get, like you know, and um, you know,
and two like that was I moved to town to
be a songwriter. All this was land yap. I never
expected any of this to happen. All I wanted was
(16:00):
people to sing my songs get played on country radio
and hopefully getting number ones and so like this is
like the genesis of why I moved to town. So
I celebrate everyone as if as if I'm never getting
another one. So they are, they're they're still very special
to me. And hey, speaking of Thomas Rhett, we spoke
(16:22):
to him gosh several weeks ago and Charlie, I think
you had asked him, well, so when you started out,
just what was the goal and he said, I just
I just wanted a hit, just one hit. And then
ten years later is this monstrous career. And we said, well,
how do you account for that? And he's like, God, oh,
there's there's no other I mean, like even like I
(16:45):
never it's like where you know, we think of you know,
for me, I moved to town to write songs and
now I have a I signed a record deal and
I never played a show before. Like, if that's not
a god thing, then I don't know what is. For
him being like, hey, I know you. I know you're
(17:06):
never going to do this on your own, because again,
I know your personality, I know who you are, so
I'm gonna give this thing to you without you even
playing a show. You realize how rare that is. It's crazy,
And that's the thing like where it's like, if that's
not the good Lord, I don't know what is. So
I mean it's it's truly, it's a that was that
(17:28):
was a god thing if I've ever seen. You know,
there's a thing about the country music. A lot of
the country music artists, yourself included, have a family, you know,
young kids and everything, and they're out there, I think
creating a fresh, new, strong image for country singers. Do
you agree with that? Yeah? Absolutely, on so many Like
you know, I mean you look at like it's I'm Herd,
(17:50):
He's a buddy of mine, and like seeing what hard
he's doing is I mean just unapologetically hardy, like you know,
and I love it. And I think that you know,
jelly roll as well, like coming in you know, with
the number one song right now. I think it's just
making country music stronger. I think that there's a place
(18:10):
for all of that. Um and I think my favorite
thing is I think, uh, you know, seeing faith be
introduced a little bit more. I feel like now I
see faith a lot in country music and I love it.
I certainly am. Yeah, I certainly am. There's a realness
going on absolutely and and and whatever kind of you know,
(18:31):
whether it be traditional or whatever, you know, the outlaw
side of it, or you know, the pop country thing
is like, you know, I don't whatever side of country
music you fall into, that's fine. But the good thing
is like, there's honest, you know, real songwriting going down
and all three of those subgenres or whatever you want
(18:53):
to call those of country, and I think it's to
be honestly, I think country music is healthier than it's
ever been for that reason, you know, I think Jordan
Davis makes the best point. Who wasn't We were talking
to Charlie who made a similar point that country music
isn't really just one genre. It is so expansive that
you can have, you know, country rock, like Charlie Daniels,
(19:15):
you can have bluegrass, country, folk country, regular traditional country music,
pop country. I mean, it just goes on and on,
and everybody is right. That is what makes quote unquote
country music all encompassing and so damn exciting. Well, the
thing is that I've always told people country music has
an open door policy. You bring it in, try it out.
(19:38):
The fans are going to determine whether or not it
becomes a part of country music. Yes, anyway, Jordan Davis
has some wonderful things to say there. And by the way,
congratulations to Jordan and his wife Kristen, who doesn't get
his love songs on the upcoming arrival over the third baby.
Oh that's right, Yes they have Elouisi and Lachland so far, kiddo,
number three is all the way, So congratulations to them.
(19:59):
