Mariah Carey Takes Us Behind New Single 'Type Dangerous'

Mimi is back! Mariah Carey dropped a brand new single - her first in years - on Friday, June 6, and stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest to chat with Ryan Seacrest about the song.

"Type Dangerous" samples Eric B. & Rakim’s classic 1986 debut single “Eric B. Is President.”

Produced by Carey alongside N.W.I. and Daniel Moor, the sample was an easy choice Mimi told Seacrest.

"This is a really special one for me," she shared. "It's always been one of my favorites, the original song."

to talk about. We know that you are going to
be at our magical festival, the Hi Radio Music Festival.
We made that announcement earlier this week. But have you

Yeah, And do you think about us often?

And what are those thoughts?

I'm like, what's Ryan doing exactly? What is he doing
right now?

I feel I feel like, well, I feel like we
probably don't do the same things. I feel like you
start a little bit later in your day normally, not.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Today, not today, Okay, our schedule, but isn't that what
time you told me you like take swim lessons or
something when you're doing swim workouts.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Didn't you tell me that.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
I've been doing swim workers again. I'm glad you remember.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
That I do because I remember you told me you
do sort of late.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
I did do them late, but you know, we gotta
twist the schedule. However, it's gonna work the best.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, I got Well, you got a lot on your
on your plate, I have to say. And we've known
each other for a long time. And had a chance
to work together in different places and do live shows together.
And I have seen fans, and I know that you
see this all the time, but fans are not just
fans like we meet a lot of people have fans.
When I see people react to you, it is a word,

and I use this term, it is a worship. There
is a real worship that people who love you have
for you. And is it because that you've been a
part of their lives for a long time? Is it
because all of the songs they relate to? I mean,
what do you think that extra connection is when you
see them and meet them?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Wow, I don't know, it's it's it's pretty mind battling though,
because you know, when I see fans that are I've
seen them over the years, time and time again, and
then some new fans that are, you know, even like
just now, there was a thirteen year old girl that
came up here to meet me and I signed her purse.

It was really sweet.

But yeah, I have a list of I mean, I
have the best selling female of artists of all time
on this list here, and I'm looking at all of
your hit songs and it's impossible to play them all
within like, I think we play them all back to
back would take months. But I've seen people with you

and it's funny because I remember one instance. I don't
know if you remember this. We were out in a
public situation one of the shows we were doing, and
someone got very excited that you were there and they
ran over with their phone to take a picture, and
I got next to you to smile and take a
picture with you with them as if they want a
picture of me too, and they asked me to hold

their camera to take picture of you out for me
to be in it, and I thought that was one
of the Yeah, I thought that was one of those
fun moments you know, to see as people just love you.
And You've got a new song out that is out
today called Type Dangerous. It is new music. You're going
to hear this probably at our iHeartRadio Music festival, which

is coming out. I'm going to play the whole thing
here in just a second. But tell me about making
this song.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, it's samples one of my favorite all time favorite records,
Eric Bet and Rock Him Eric Be's President, and I've
done a lot of sampling and rewriting songs, but this
is a really special one for me. It's just one
of my always been one of my favorites. The original song.

(03:51):
So then we you know, we got together and wrote
some more and did a melody and do we have
Type dangerous?

Speaker 1 (04:01):

I definitely have a moment. It's so exciting. I mean,
it's like what I've started out doing and to be
able to still do it is you know, it's a
big deals for me.

Do you So I'm listening to the lyrics of Type Dangerous?
Are you playing you? Or are you playing a character
when you are singing some of these lyrics.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Kind of a character kind of me and kind of
a character.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
And are you do you like dangerous things in your life?
Are you? Are you like an adventure seeker?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I am when it's like a rollercoaster or something like that.
You know, we can leave it at that.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
But when it comes to when it comes to people
in your life or do dangerous people interest you?

Speaker 2 (05:24):
It really worked for the song, Yeah right, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
I just thought, wow, it does you put yourself into
that role and it makes sense. And when you perform
live and you do a show, I mean, obviously you're
going to do this. This is new music for you,
it's out today, But when you do a show, how
do you decide your set list? Because it's like endless.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Well, let's say the past couple I don't know, more
than a couple of months we had this The Adventure,
not the Adventures of Me. That was another incarnation of it.
But you know, for for what did I call it?

(06:08):
What the hell? Emancipationipation years?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yeah, it was twenty years.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
And twenty yees. So we had this what do you
call it? When you're doing the anniversary shows? And you know,
so that was that was cool because people knew the songs,
and people at home were having their own parties to
the Mimi songs and it was just something that made
me really happy.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Well, does I mean it's shake it off? I'm just
trying to think of well we believe don't like that.
By the way, By the way, do you know whose
song we Belong Together is? It's a lot of people's song,
But do you know there's a happy couple whose song
it is? And I was with them, uh, and they're
you know them well, you know him well, and they're
about to have a big ceremony. And I love that

song so much that I played it three times in
a row when we're all together. Do you know Benny
and Kirk, Benny Medina and Kirk.

Oh? I did not know that.

Did you meet? Have you met Kirk?

I probably have met. Yes, I know. I've met Benny
many many times.

Of course I know this. So we were together in
the car and I was playing your music because I
like it on my playlist, and Benny said to me,
this is kirk my song. So I thought, knowing at
least one of them, you might want to know that
that's the song that they Yeah, that's just the song

that is, you know, you like, what's your song? Like?
What's an artist to think when you said, this is
my song but not your song? Who's an artist you
think about? He have a song you like to play this?
Not I know you play you all the time at home.
But if it's not you, what do you mean yours?
But is there is do you have like a song
or an artist that just like makes you melded that

You know? It's it's sad because it's a lot of
like throwbacks to people who aren't with us anymore. Yeah,
you know, like there's so many great Jackson songs, Michael Jackson,
you know this.

Is this is the one I was talking. You can
understand why I could become someone's song. So, Mariah, we
know we're going to see you in September. We will
get people tickets to that. It's our iHeart Radio Music Festival,
which is a lot of fun for us because we
get a lot of different things going on, all different

styles and genres of music. You've got this new single.
Tell me what else we don't know about what's on
your calendar for the next year or so? That might
be exciting.

Oh boy, well, I'm traveling all around the land and
that's I guess that could be exciting. That's for the
for the Mimi album, but also I'll be doing type
dangerous because it's a brand new song and I want to,
you know, people to hear it. And yeah, I mean

doing the different moments in terms of like, Okay, here's
my brand new song, but I'm gonna do it with
like you just played Wee bel on Together, or it's
like that something that is familiar to people with something
that's brand new.
