Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is on with Mario Lopez Tu Girl.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Mario Lopez joining me right now, the lead singer of
the band That Shine Down, Brent Smith.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
How's it going, Brent, It's going awesome. I feel like
you're such a part of my life.
Speaker 4 (00:13):
Because I'm in a hotel room where I basically live
in hotels anyway. You're always on the lodge net, so
I always see you as soon as I walk in.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
You're like a friendly face everywhere I go.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, I appreciate that. I appreciate that, and hopefully you're
not getting Mario.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Overload, not at all bringing it well. Your new single
three sixty five is just blown up.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It's a song about loss though, right, Is that the
backstory on this one?
Speaker 4 (00:37):
Well, I think it's more of a song about the
dynamic of you know, the people that are in our
lives that are no longer physically with us. It's about
understanding that you know, there can be this sadness because
they're not with you anymore, but in reality they're everywhere
like there's still a part of you, and you know.
It is a song about that question of you know,
if you had one more day with that loved one,
(00:58):
or you even had just one more hour with you know,
what would you tell them? You know, how would you
say thank you? But it's understanding that you know, as
human beings, there's so much that we deal with on
a daily basis that when we lose a loved one
it can be very traumatic.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
But you got to remember that.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
They're always right by your side, They're always in your heart.
And that's a lot of what that song represents.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Oh that's beautiful man. And you also released another one
called Dance Kid.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Dance got a completely different kind of song.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Much much heavier rock. Uh ye jam right there? And
h is there a little social commentary going on right there?
Speaker 4 (01:34):
I think anything in Shine Doown there's going to be
a little bit of social commentary. My whole thing is
always like I want to be able to talk about
things that sometimes will make people.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
It's not that we're trying to be uncomfortable.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
We're trying to have an open dialogue with each other
so that we can understand one another.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
I think that people.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Don't need to stop learning. I also think that people
need to be good to each other. But we live
in and we live in interesting times. My friend and
I think that we have to take care of each
other by challenging one another to you know, I want
to know what someone thinks that maybe doesn't you know,
I might have a different interpretation of that or a
(02:11):
different opinion. But having an open dialogue about it helps
you learn about each other and also gives you maybe
information that you weren't aware of because you can have
those conversations and shake hands and still be friends and
still have a respect for one another. You don't always
have to agree fully, but in order for us to
move forward, we have to do that as a society.
(02:32):
We have to do it together and respect one another.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
I absolutely agree with you. That's a great, great message.
You're absolutely right. You got to have that healthy communication dialogue.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I know you're working on your eighth studio album, Congraty's
how's it going?
Speaker 1 (02:46):
You're almost done?
Speaker 4 (02:48):
So where we're at right now, we've been working on
it for a little over a year and we're probably
seventy five percent finished with it right now.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
But the other side of it, too is we're we're already.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Kind of constructing what touring cycle looks like for twenty
twenty six and twenty twenty seven. Obviously, we have a
tour that we're getting ready to do. But we released
two singles as of right now, and we are also
going to follow that up later on this summer with
two more singles and then the announce of the album.
We're hoping to be able to present that this year.
(03:21):
But anybody that knows us knows that you know, when
we're in the studio and it's time to write a
shine down record, we have to make sure that it
is one hundred percent authentic. So usually the album will
talk to us and let us know when it's finished.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, we're almost there.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
It sounds like you mentioned the tour you're gonna be
with Bush Bear Tooth, Morgan Wade.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Let's go summer tour right there? How do you how
do you pick out a set list with the catalog?
Speaker 3 (03:50):
So our guitar player, Zach Myers is a big part
of that.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
This particular, this is by far the wildest production that
we've ever put together.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
This is definitely we're.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Pushing the envelope here, just because we're kind of known
for these very theatrical stage performances and the way that
we design certain things. But for the first time ever,
our goal is to make sure every single city gets
a completely different set list every single night.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
So yes, there.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Will be songs that we have kind of like the
ten that we know, you got to play these ten songs.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
You're not gonna make it out alive if you if
you don't play these ten.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
So it's the other ten that you have to kind
of construct and you know, throw, you know, a few
curveballs that the audience is always fun. So really, we
just did four full days of band rehearsal and went
through forty one songs.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
It was a lot.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
And then looking at all that because we have thirty
three singles as a band between seven records, but it's
a lot more.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
You know, you wonder when you go into rehearsal, are
we even going to remember some of these songs?
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
The thing is that it's kind of like riding a bike.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
The muscle memory is still there, and then there's some
it's like yo, man, if you're gonna play this, we're
gonna have to practice this.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah yeah, yeah, But.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
The goal with this particular tour is for each city
to get a completely different set list than the other.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Oh that's cool, that's very cool and not lazy like it.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
No, Yeah, we're just trying to make it as difficult
as we can on If I'm being honest, how hard
can we make it?
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Right?
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Keep you on your toes there.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
A couple months back, you joined Jelly Rool on stage
and the first Responders benefit here in LA You're saying,
Leonard Skinner simple Man together.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
That was really cool.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
And he toured with you guys before, right, Yeah, yeah, Back.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
In twoenty and twenty one we did a festival together.
I had never met him, but I was probably one
of the first fifty thousand views of the song saved
me because I just remember when I saw that for
the first time, I was like, like a lot of people,
I was just enamored by what I was watching and
what I was hearing.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I was like, who is this? This is completely like unexpected.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
And so in twenty twenty one, we were on the
same festival together and I met him and then I
went in and I asked him. I said, Yo, do
you want to come up and do Simpleman with us tonight?
And he was like yeah, So he came up. We
had an absolute blast. I got his number, and then
towards the back half of that year before the following
year in twenty twenty two. Right around January of twenty
(06:27):
twenty two, I gave him a call and I said, listen,
we're going to do this tour in the summer, late
summer in amphitheaters. It's about forty two dates. We'd love
it if you would be main support for this. And
he agreed to it. And I think a lot of
people around the band at the time, you know, there
were people that said to myself and Zach and.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Eric and Barry, they were like, who is this?
Speaker 4 (06:50):
And I said, you're just going to have to trust
me because this dude is going to get in a
rocket ship in a minute and sky's a limit.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Let me put it to you this way.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
That dude is one thousand percent necessary and the world,
the world made the right guy famous.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Oh that's cool to hear, man, that's very cool to hear.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Nice.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
I'm sure he really appreciates that.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Hey, now, he's the absolute best man. He is about
as authentic as they come. All of his success and
everything that he's doing. It could not happen to a
more When you talk about the real thing, he's the
real thing.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
That's good. That's I love to hear those kind of stories.
Last questions. You still in the hot sauce.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Business one thousand percent. We're doubling down on. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Man, it's pretty wild, to be honest with you, but
I got it.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Here's the thing. Torch Bear and Barry Kirch, Like, Barry worked.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
So our drummer worked so hard with this company, Torch Bearer.
And then so there's three sauces altogether. The one that
got the most, the one that's kind of at the
kind of at the top, is the first one we released,
which was the Symptom Sauce, which is a Chipotle hot sauce.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
But last year it did it.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
We did it the very first the Brooklyn Hot Sauce Convention,
which is one of the biggest ones in North America.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
That sauce actually took first, first place, first time.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
Ever in the Chipotle category. And then I think the
Devour the Jerk sauce got a third place.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
And I want to say the Attention Attention.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Sauce, which is probably the hottest sauce of the three,
it got an award too. But you very rarely see
a hot sauce first year out at these conventions get
a first place. So, yeah, man, we've got a lot
of stuff coming with the Hot Sauce. It's pretty remarkable.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Actually, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
And first of all, I did not know there was
a Hot Sauce convention. I'm gonna start googling that shit
of them.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
See.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, that is awesome. Hey, well, congratulations on everything. It's
always nice to talk to you, Brent, and listen everyone.
