Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario Lopez.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's up.
Speaker 3 (00:03):
You're allD Mario Lopez joining me right now. Grammy winning
singer and songwriter my man Richard Marks.
Speaker 4 (00:08):
I do it.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Richard, I'm great, buddy. How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
I'm well? Thank you for asking. This is exciting.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
You're getting into the podcast game with a new show,
Stories to tell you interview musicians and celebs. That's very cool,
especially been big music guy myself. I'm gonna enjoy that.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
What's the what's the wildest story you've heard so far?
Speaker 4 (00:28):
The wildest, most unexpected so far was when Kenny G
told me about getting arrested.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
What did can you get arrested for? That?
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Nobody in the world up to when when our show airs.
That's going to be the headline. The people didn't even
know that. He got pulled over for some like random
just on the highway and the cop arrested him, cuffed him,
took him downtown.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Sorry, Yeah, so now we know the G stands for gangsta. Yes,
Kenny G, by the way, which I'm sure he told you,
probably the best golfer out there as far as musicians
are concerned. I would say say, I think it's safe to.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Say, just to ask him.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
He'll tell you exactly.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
But a lot of people said, Kenny is not Kenny
is not shy your golfer.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
I'm here, Kenny might be.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
The actually the best celebrity golfer on the on the scene.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
That's a bold statement right there. That's very cool. Debut
episode is with Paul Stanley from Kiss. That's cool.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
That must have been some wild stories right there. I
remember being a little kid dressing up as Kiss for Halloween.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
So what did you learn about? What did you learn
about Paul?
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Kind of like how they how they even got started
putting on the makeup. That was really one of the
things that I you know, look some of these stories
and some of these people, I'm sure you you experienced
the same thing when you sit down and you I'm
not really interviewing, I'm just hanging.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Out having a conversation exactly.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
But there is an agenda in that I'm a host
and they're the guest. But a lot of these people
are my friends, friends for years. I mean, Paul and
I are really great pals, but we're kind of new friends.
We became friends kind of like during the pandemic and
we spent a lot of time together. We go to look,
I had breakfast with him a couple of days ago,
so I know a lot about his life and his
(02:24):
family and his history. But then there are these little
tidbits that come in when you're just having a conversation
in that kind of atmosphere.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I'm sure the same thing's happened to you.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Where you sit down with somebody who you're actually friends with,
who you hang out with, but then you're interviewing them
and you go.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Wait, I didn't know that.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
So you know some of the stuff that comes up
in conversation, even with my friends of decades, you know
I did. I did an episode with Kenny Loggins last.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Night and love Kenny Loggins.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah. Well, I mean he's he's such a good people.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
You're having on Yeah, you know, everybody's got great stories,
everybody's got great stories.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Well, I want to see because I want I'm curious.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
I'm always like just waiting for the for the big surprise.
And in the case of Kenny g who's been my
dear pal for thirty something years, I was like, wait,
you got to rested and you didn't tell me.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, exactly, And I got to find out how the
makeup things started. I don't know if they were just
doing as I gotta find out about that.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Did you happen to see the yacht Rock documentary?
Speaker 2 (03:26):
I haven't.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
And the only it's so weird because Kenny actually had
dinner after the.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Episode last night and he said, did you did you?
I do it pretty good, Kenny, uh Ricardo, did you
see the yacht Rock?
Speaker 1 (03:36):
That's good? That's good?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
And I said, the only reason I haven't is because
Daisy and I have been really busy and traveling and stuff,
and she made me promise not to watch it without her.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, I watched it with my wife too.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
That's top of our list.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
I think you'll like it. I think you'll like I
didn't realize he was so tall.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
He's tall, huh, Kenny, Kenny, Kenny's like six or four.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Yeah, I didn't realize. When I was watching this, I'm like, dang,
Michael McDonald looked really nice to him. You've also announced
that you joined The Voice Australia as a coach.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
That's cool. Well, anything you're looking for in particular when
choosing your.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Team, Yeah, my criteria tends to be I mean, look,
you got to sing in tune. You can't be out
of tune. But it can't just be technically perfect. It
can't just be musical. I want to believe people when
they sing. It's got to be like and sometimes with
younger singers that is the thing that's hard to find,
(04:32):
is somebody who's really believable, who you really believe when
they're singing the words right. Yes, But the thing is,
you know, I've spent a lot of time in my
life in Australia, and there is something in the water there, Mario,
because the singers that come out.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Of Australia are out of control.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
And so I'm really looking forward to finding and discovering
and mentoring some great young singers. But then I'm also
selfishly just psyched because I love Australia and to be
able to basically live there for a couple months is uh,
it's just icing on the cake.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
You know. That's going to be a blaster. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
You write a lot of great talent ac DC and
excess meant at work, a lot of great.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Even a lot of people that you know, Americans don't know.
Like there's a guy he's called he's considered the voice
in Australia named John Farnham, who's legendary in Australia, like
the most famous person in Australia. Yeah, never crossed over
outside of Australia, never had hits here I've been. I've
known him for a long time. He's an older guy now,
but his voice. If I played you when you come over.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Here to the house, I'm ready.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Remember, I'm gonna play you a little bit of John Farmer.
Your mind's going to be blown. Those guy's like the
greatest singer you'll ever hear.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Oh, I want to check it out.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Is Little River band from Australia.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
They are great band. Huh I like that?
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah? Really in excess came out of Australia.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah, no, there were a lot of talent.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
And besides making your own music, of course, you've written
a bunch of songs for a lot of other artists
and a bunch of different genres too. Do you have
a favorite type of music to write for others?
Speaker 4 (06:01):
Oh, that's a good question. I don't have a particular
favorite one. But every time I've been sort of challenged
to go outside of what I would do for myself,
that's fine. So I'm the perfect example. Is is a
long time ago, like twenty years ago. But I wrote
and produced the first Josh Grobn hit called to Where
(06:22):
You Are. Oh wow, it was you know, Josh was
a kid, but he was really based in opera and
classical music, and I didn't really come from that at all.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
When I wrote the song.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
I wrote the music, I used chor changes and I
channeled like opera and classical music, and it really inspired
me to write something unlike I'd ever written before. And
I was thrilled that the song became a number one song.
But you know, or even like country, you know, I
mean nobody would have nobody would think that a city
boy from Chicago would, you know, have all these songs
(06:55):
with the country artists.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
But I've written hits with Keith Urban and Vince.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Storytelling a storytelling Yeah at the end of the day.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, No, that's cool man. I love that.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
And I know you're hitting the road for some tour
dates in twenty twenty five here as well with Rick Springfield.
That's an awesome show. What can we look forward to
and where can people find the dates?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
The dates are well, there's a bunch of dates in
the fall, but we're doing coming up soon at the
end of this month. Nashville, Atlanta and Birmingham. At Birmingham,
I think so. Rick Springfield is another guy. He's a
guest on my show. Good actor too, by the way,
great actor. Rick act multi talented. It's just too bad
(07:39):
about his face. But yeah, it's too bad.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
He's not handsome.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Rick and I've been great pals for like thirty five
years or something like that.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Australian the way to another Australian guy.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Yeah, he's an auzy, that's right.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
I just remembered Rick and I.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Several years ago we teamed up and did a co
headlining tour, but it was like one of those twos
where this artist does their set, this artist does their set.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
We did a song or two together, but it was
a little separate. You know.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
When we came back together in the last year, Rick said,
why don't we just do the whole show together. So
it's actually an acoustic show. It's just me and him
playing acoustic guitar. It's cool, and we just take turns.
I do end the summer nights and he sings and
plays with me. We do Jesse's Girl, I sing and.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Play with him.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
That's cool.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
It's two hours of just kidding around and messing around
and it's.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Like a party.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
So oh, that's fun.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Come see me and Rick Springfield's that's a fun one.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Let me know you're gonna be in La Man, We'll
be there. That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Well, congratulations on everything and listen. Be sure to check
out Richard's new video podcast, Stories to Tell, drops February
eighteenth on YouTube. Richard, thanks for checking in, man, and
