Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is on with Mario Lopez.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
What's off?
Speaker 3 (00:03):
You're on? Mario Lopez joining to me right now.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
One of the stars of the Emmy winning show The
Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, actress Sam Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
How you doing, Sam good Man?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Good to do with your Thanks well.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Thanks for taking the time.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
And we are in the sixth and final season of
the show, which just premiered on Hulu. Man, I remember
the first season, y'all took nice little long hiatuses in
between these these.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
A slow show. In fact, coming from a different show,
I hopped on this and I was kind of startled
at how slow the whole process is. You know, we
shoot like four four pages a day, and I was
used to just being like, hey, let's bang these scenes out. Yeah,
but I think there's a reason for it. You know,
people like you know, there's a lot of thought put
into what it looks like, to how even the images
(00:49):
you know, helped to show how confined and restricted a
lot of the characters are. So there is a method
to the incredibly slow, methodical madness.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
We got to wait for I imagine, where does the
season pick up and what's your character up to?
Speaker 1 (01:05):
So we we're in this season where you know, you know,
Haymad's tale is about Gilead taking over most of North
America and at this point there's only two states in
the United States left, Hawaii and Alaska, and even the
Canadians at the start of this season they don't want
Americans in their country anymore, and they're pushing them out,
(01:28):
and you know, we get to see kind of all
these characters who have been losing the battle just kind
of fight back in whatever way they can, and desperate
times call for desperate measures, and it's a It's pretty
cool because you know, a lot of a lot of
shows like this, they get to the end of the series,
and there are shows that are famous. I'm not going
(01:50):
to mention what they are, but there are a couple
of shows famous for not sticking the landing. You know,
we're leaving audiences hangings, and I'm glad this Yes, maybe
possible Game of Thrones, maybe Game of Thrones, you know,
and there we certainly didn't want that. So we wanted
to make sure we ended this series on a high
and thankfully, the scripts were amazing and I have a
(02:12):
feeling the end it's going to be really satisfying for
people watching.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Oh good.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
So you're happy with the way it ended, I am okay, okay, nice.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Nice. It fits with the way the series was built,
you know, which is not like you know, and then
they all, you know, drive off, you know, holding hands.
You know, it's not that, but it's thankfully it feels
true to this series and is thankfully a relief for
fans who stuck with us this far.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
It's always tough to say goodbye after after a long
run like this. What was the final day on set?
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Light Cold? So Cold? I mean, we've shot this show
in Toronto in the dead of winter for seasons, and
so we wrapped it two in the morning in you know,
like perfect can Maide's tale, Like we're on some like
dirt road in the middle of a forest with these
crew that are freezing their butts off, and so the
(03:09):
good Bible was brief and yeah, but I just said,
you know, I love you guys, I love working with you,
and I hope I get to do it again because
it's rare to work. I'm going to show that you
feel proud of and then you get to work with
people who were all in line. They're trying to tell
the best story and get their egos out of the way.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
I know exactly what you mean, Sam, regarding cold and
saying goodbye. I was just in Buffalo for about a month.
Is not too far from trying to sow. Yeah, you're
exactly right those exterior shots, man, and i's just.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
The noses running.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
I can't even I'm not bitter, just it was a
hot mess or cold painful.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
It's exactly what it is. It is painful. That cold
is next level.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
You also just had a movie come out, Wolfman, a
reboot of the iconic universal film back in the day.
For people who don't know the story, I've always loved
Wolfman stories. Here what what's the premise of this film?
Speaker 1 (04:02):
The premise of this film was this, you know, this
story of a guy who comes back to the farm
he grew up on. His father was you know, ex
military and really you know, hard on him and trying
to teach him to survive on his own because he
knew that there was something out in the woods there
that was you know, that could kill you easily. And
(04:23):
so his son returns to the land to try and
you know, see what it's like and immediately realizes that
he's that whatever was out there is still out there,
and we got to shoot it in New Zealand, which
was epic. It was stunning, and you know, it was
it was a beautiful shoot to do. I mean, I
(04:45):
don't know if you've ever been in New Zealand, but
I highly recommend no.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I heard it's incredible. Oh that's nice during during the
summertime or winter time or.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
It was a spring so it was there fall, early fall. Yeah,
it was amazing. Yeah, a lot of the Lord of
the Rings locations. Yeah, it was epic. So but that
was a that was a fun show to do. And uh,
I think it's it's got surprising elements to it. The
guy who created it, Lee Wantall, wrote saw and he
(05:15):
did a invisible woman actually invisible man.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah those are Elizabeth Moss.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah yeah, but he uh you know, but he didn't.
He wasn't trying to keep a franchise alive. He was
just trying to tell a good, riveting thriller. And I
think we did that very cool.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
You also got you also got three kids, right.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
I got three boys and my stepdaughter. It's it's packed.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, that must be. That must be.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Uh that house must be a mess.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Absolutely mess. This is the only televisable portion of the whole.
I found this tiny little corner I could shove myself into.
I got three. The rest of it is legos and
baseball and baseball bats all over the house. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Oh, they're little guys. Then they're young.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Well they're eight, ten and fifteen.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Okay, yeah fine.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Then my step yeah so, and my stepdaughter is thirty.
So thankfully she can get dressed in the morning and
and get herself to work on her own and she
doesn't need me for that.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah that's cool, man, that's cool.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
