Speaker 1 (00:05):
They're more join no good but dumb bump. Oh was
I supposed to do a tease beforehand and then play
a commercial? Or no? No, Well are you going to
do one? I was gonna do one. Oh you do one?

(00:27):
You do? I'll do mine next week? Are you sure?
Was I supposed to do a teas in the commercial beforehand? Actually?
No commercials? No more? I like it? Why I like it?
We need advertising?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Everybody listening right now? Was that nice?

Speaker 1 (00:41):
I think we got an issue here. I think we're
not selling advertising right now. We're in trouble. That's that's
how we get paid, all right. So I wanted to
do and you know, kind of we flip around and
do the more Mojo podcast and everybody does one, and
normally I will choose to sit out and opt out,
but I would like to do a podcast because I
would like to talk to the people on the show

(01:04):
about the idea of what Lydia did last week where
she went and shadowed two shows. And I was having
this conversation with Tony and I said, do any of
the rest of the guys on the show want to
go shadow somebody that is somebody that does what they do,
And would you do that. I would love to. So
you'd like to go to another city and go and

(01:27):
h are you just looking for a free vacation, aren't you?
They paid for it? No, well then you know you
get paid. Well, I mean Lydia, Lydia paid for Arizona,
but the company told me my first.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Stop I mean for me personally is I want to
visit Joe and because I want to go to Tampa,
that's the no. I want to see how Jed does
his show so fast? And Jed's like kind of my mentor.
If you don't know Jed, he's a boy, so you.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Can have better mentors. I don't know anyone. It's kind
of it's kind of like you know, saying, yeah, my
my favorite player in the NFL is John Kittner Er.
So I don't know. I'm trying to know who's like,
no kitten where with any of you. Shannon, You've been

(02:13):
in this business for for a little bit. Would you
have you? I know you say sat in on our
show is one of the reasons. Yeah, yeah, you would
you ever still have any interest in today doing something
like that going to another city?

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Well, yeah, I mean I my idol, I guess is
Ellen Kay and she used to be Ryan Seacrest's co
host and now she has her own show out on
the West Coast. I would love I would love to
just have an hour with her and sit in her studio.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
She doesn't per se does she do a morning show?
Is that morning show? I would love to sit in
on her show.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
And I would love to sit in with Siciny and
Tanya on seacrest show and just see like how that
madness works. I think that would be really super cool.
I love Fallon up in Minnesota. She now does an
afternoon show that has kind of modeled a little bit
like a morning show.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
By talk to her all the time, so I don't
know though, just their their day.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Yeah, yeah, I would love to do that.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Cav. You're the newest to the game, so to speak.
But would you want would you want to sit in
on the show or you like that no off show?

Speaker 5 (03:21):
I would like to sit in on Big Boys Show,
Big Boy, Ryan c Christmas Show, and then.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
EJ as well do all well and plus to see
how he does all of the stations he does across
the country.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
We should take a little la trip, I would show.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
So, so let's talk to Lydia real quick about this.
So Lydia went and she hung out with the Joe Show,
and then she left and went to Arizona to go
meet these nuts and wait is that calling him? And
and she hung out with John Jay and Rich. So
it's the important part. What a cool opportunity for you

(04:01):
to be able to see a show that is new
to the game and then a veteran show like John
Jay and Rich.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
That was super cool. It was nice to see. So
I was asking John Jay how long he's been doing it.
I guess twenty five years, almost just like you Mojo.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:16):
So I was looking at their dynamic and seeing how
it could compare to us. But then I was also
thinking back to Joe Show, and I'm thinking, Wow, this
is like the evolution of radio, Like Jo Show is
like the new generation, and it's so.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Cool to see.

Speaker 6 (04:33):
It actually almost gave me chills, like just talking about it.
It's really it's really something special like working in radio
to me and being on this show is a big blessing.
And then when you see how other people have to
do shows, not saying that ours is better than any
of the others. They're all special in their own way,
but it just makes you see how much ours has

(04:54):
grown and how other shows have grown based on their
ages and what they know, and how differently.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
I do think. I you know, the last show that
I probably have gone for the purpose of sitting in
and shadowing was Woody and the Woody Show is based
out of la It's a great morning show. They're very,
very funny, edgy. And when I went in on the

(05:20):
show having done this for as long as I've done
it and Woody and I are kind of similar as
far as the amunt of years, and I got so
much out of it, Like I actually like there was
a way that Woody solicited for callers. Is something I
stole right away, which was don't call us, we'll call you. Hey,
We're going to do a topic in twenty minutes, and

(05:42):
he would say, if you fit this topic, text us
right now. Don't call us, we'll call you is what
he calls it. And then they have all their calls
lined up ready to go for something that's ten twenty
minutes from now, which I thought was cool. The other
thing that I thought was cool was he preps his
whole show, but he doesn't just flow with the whole

(06:04):
prep like he wants to he's a better listener, I
think sometimes than I am. And he'll hear something and
he'll go and it'll refer back to it, and he'll
think of a new topic off of something that somebody says.
So it could be like Shannon yesterday doing the topic
about going down to Florida and having separate places that

(06:24):
she and West were staying at. He will hear something
that she says in that and turn it into a
you know, a nightmare Airbnb story or something like that.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
It's cool, so it kind of makes me go. When
I saw that, it made me go, God, I got
to stop being so rigid, you know.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
I feel like I am at the point in my
career where I mean, you've been in radio for longer
than me.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I've been doing this for twenty years.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
I've been here for going on sixteen, and I feel
like I need to be more proactive about doing that
and going and sitting with other shows and meeting other people,
just because I feel like, especially right now, I'm like
kind of stuck in my ways and I always want
to be like doing something different and better and evolving,
and I feel like I haven't done something like that

(07:11):
in a really long time that would allow like we
always do, or you guys always go to morning show
boot camp, which you've heard us talk about on the
show over the years, and I really want to go
this year just to have that to kind of get
a kick in the butt of And it's cool doing
things differently.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
In boot Camp's kind of been something that's gotten cool
because it's not just radio people, it's podcasters, it's influencers.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
It's when you guys listen to podcasts, don't you go, Oh,
I like how they do this, or I like how
they're just very low key and it sounds like they're
just shooting the shit and there's no plan here, but
it works. And I feel like I get so inspired
from certain podcasts.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Yeah, I you know. Tony said something to me. Tony Travado,
our boss, said something to me. He said, what is
your motivation, like at this point of your life, what
is your motivation? And I told him, I said, my
motivation at this point is the same motivation I had
when I was nineteen years old and starting in radio,

(08:14):
and my motivation was to not get fired, like that
was like my thing. And I know that they always say,
don't you know don't think that way, because if you
think that way, you'll work out a fear instead of
working out of your talents. And honestly, I think that
has been my motivation. Is My motivation is I don't

(08:34):
believe I am talented enough to be able to let
talent do my thing, So I have to outwork everybody
else or I've got to figure out what is the
newest thing or what is the latest thing that I
need to do and be involved in it. And that's
kind of why over the years I've always gone to
these radio nerd conventions because I learned so much. And actually,

(08:56):
the funny thing is when you go to what Lydia did,
where she goes and she shadows, it's not the host
of the show that teaches you something. It's the person that,
like Peyton from John Jay and Richie's show, I know
you're really close to. She really set a lot of
influence for you. From what you've talked to me about.

Speaker 6 (09:16):
Yeah, her personality just brightens up a room to no end.
Like when I see her touch a mic, I think, wow,
I wish I could do that. And she's twenty six
years old, she's a year younger than me, but still given.
When I listen to her on the air, if I'm
just talking with her and her passion for radio, I'm like, wow,
this is incredible.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
You're twenty seven. Yeah, the fuck lost. Let's see now,
if this was Woody, he'd do the topic of the
insult of age or something. Bianca. I mentioned this in
our show meeting yesterday. Bianca is the newest to the
game for us. And when I will hear Tony or

(09:56):
Colleen or Nick naw or what everybody talk about something
going on and I see her light up about it,
where I'm going, Oh, fuck, it's gonna be more work
for us. I realize I gotta stop thinking that way,
Like I got to stop by the way. Shannon's not
leaving or not not going to be heard here. She's
got she's got a carpet issue. She's dealing with it.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Right They're at my house, at my driving and they're like,
we're here to install your carpet.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I'm like, give me twenty minutes.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Safely, be safe. You may get a random phone call. Bianca.
I mentioned this yesterday. You actually influenced me in a
huge way because I'm trying to see things through your eyes.
Because when I see how excited you get over something.
It makes me go, Okay, Tom, you gotta stop being

(10:46):
such a you know, an asshole.

Speaker 7 (10:49):
Honestly, I kind of just see everything like a blessing.
Like I kind of had the mentality of I get
to do this. I get to this instead of doing
instead of saying, like I have to do this, like
for the Michigan Central station, and when we went there,
like that was such like for me as a cool
opportunity because it's not something I get to do every day,
or even coming here, coming to work every day. It's
not like this is like such like a blessing and
such a cool opportunity to have that, like not many

(11:11):
people get to do. Like no one can say I
work on radio. I do this because it is a
competitive job and you got to work hard and you
have to have a good work ethic for it. So
I feel like I was very blessed you I was
to have a good attitude with everything in life, and
that's that's the way to live a happy life.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
I feel like you almost have to live your life
with a little bit of inquisitiveness that you never know
who's going to teach you something, you know what, I mean,
like I was, I was going to the bathroom like
a month or so ago and met one of the
guys who was one of the traffic guys here at
the station, and they do all the traffic for the
stations around the country. I'd like to know how they

(11:47):
do that, Like we can we can hear and see
like that traffic. People can jump in and they can
pretty much just read stuff. But it's pretty freaking wild
that in Detroit, Michigan, a guy's doing traffic for Cleveland,
you know. So I think that that's kind of interesting.
But and I get the same thing like when Kevin,
when I watch you at the Pistons games and see

(12:09):
you do it like, I don't think I'm a I
think I'm good with people, and I'm good at making
people feel good. You make twenty two thousand people, you know,
feel good sometimes when the team's not feeling so good.
You know what I mean, that's pretty that's a special gift.
It's pretty fun. Yeah, you're so cool. I think that

(12:32):
we Uh, well, let's talk about I want to talk
about the negatives too. Let's talk about the negative. Yeah,
let's get into the greedy, Let's get into the degree Lydia.
What is something that you saw Joe do or or
John Jay and Rich do that you thought to yourself, Oh,
this is not good. This is not good what they're
doing based on what you do. Like as a producer,

(12:54):
it's got to be hard sometimes to see somebody do
something you're like going, no, no, no, no, don't do
it that way.

Speaker 6 (12:59):
Yeah, there's a or that the Joe Show has up
of topics and it's behind Joe or it's to the
side of him, So when he's trying to ease into
a topic or he's segueing into something, he has to
turn his neck, so there's like a three to four
second delay before he's gonna get into it because he's
reading the note card across the board of the topic.
So I think that he could probably put in a

(13:19):
different spot, put in a different spot because I feel
like that three to four seconds I mean to get
into that.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
It's tough. You also said something to him which I
know he took heart into. Is about him He schedules
the whole show. Yeah, and you thought that he might
want to open it up to some of the other
people possibly trying to do that.

Speaker 6 (13:39):
I think giving that to maybe Terry or Jed just
to throw in a couple of things here and there
is good. And I also think that him reading through
every single topic is important because there were a couple
of topics that were missed on the first day that
I shadowed, and then I looked over them the second
day and I was like, oh my god, these were
sent in yesterday.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
You should have done them.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Then what about John Jay and Rich John Jay?

Speaker 6 (13:59):
And so there was something I noticed about callers that
they were doing, and I talked to John Jay about this.
He was going to just move on when he was
getting calls, so he wasn't getting any calls in a topic.
He moved on and then his phone lines lit up
and he wasn't going to take any calls and I
was like, wait, why don't you just go back and
take them. And he's like, well, I've moved on, and
I was like, no, you can stop. You can take

(14:20):
them and then you can do what our audio producer
Zach does and implement them in the podcast. You don't
have to just get rid of them. And he was
like so like interested in the way that we do that,
and I thought that that was a great idea.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
He did end up doing it, and I believe me
knowing John Jay because he is the guy, is like,
I've never seen anybody who does more on his day
in his day than that guy does. If he's listening
to this podcast, the thing I would say to him
is that was something I didn't learn until later having
Zach because usually I was the one that was kind

(14:54):
of figuring anything out. So having Zach is great for that.
But the other thing is our iHeart at app, which
a majority of our listeners listen off of, is so
delayed that we we do a topic and I go, oh,
that fell fucking flat, and then I'm like two minutes
into it getting all these calls. I'm going, mother fuck light.

(15:16):
And when we do topics, we go topic to topic
to topic and a lot of times I'm like, fuck,
I don't want to derail the good topic we got now.
But then I realize these people took the time to
call with a personal story, and you never know when
you're gonna get gold. You know, how do.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
You like with Lydia Because in my min like you said,
I'm new to this and I want to be the best,
which is another reason why we need to get the
Grand Rapids because we aren't number one there and.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
We need to But immediately with Lydias and you got
a girl that you like such a immediately when Lydia.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
Is talking about John Jay and Rich and giving him ideas,
I'm like, man, fuck them.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
They figured.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
Or job like, how do you find the line and
the balance between given the sauce and just given enough?

Speaker 1 (16:05):
I guess to help. Okay, so you bring up something
really interesting. For years, John Jay and Rich and I
never talked, so I did mornings and Tucson I left,
and when I left, John Jay and Rich came and
did the morning show and there was some kind of
an underlining thing where I don't know how it started.

(16:27):
It could have been me starting it, it could have been
them starting it where we both didn't want to talk
to each other, and then we would hear stories and listen.
This happens all the time. When you come to a
radio station, people will say, well, Mojo did this, or
you know, John Day and Rich do that? You know
what I mean? Like when you follow a show, they
always bring up the other person. And I think in
their case, they probably had a lot of people that

(16:48):
would say stuff like that, and they own Arizona like,
those guys own it. They've been there now for as
long as I've been in Detroit, and they, you know,
kill it in the entire state. I'm very envious of
that because that's what I wanted before I left there.
So back ten, twelve, fifteen years ago, maybe even five
years ago, I would have been never wanting Lydia to

(17:10):
go sit in with them. And it wasn't until we
went to boot camp this year and I got a
chance to hang with John Jay and to see his
show and to meet his wife and all the stuff
that I sat there and I go, man, life is
way too short. I should have been We should have
been close, because honestly, we probably have more that we
can relate to than most. So I will say this

(17:33):
to you that I feel like, maybe it's a confidence
in my talents that if I share something, it's not
going to hurt me, but it could help them and
vice versa. I would hope they would feel the same way,
and I know that they would because John Jay. Actually
one of the things with John Jay, when Joe first
got his first morning show job, he was the first

(17:56):
person to reach out to Joe to congratulate him, not
even knowing him at all, like not even really knowing
who Joe was. And uh then he Joe told me
he's like I had a great talk with John Jay.
I was like, that motherfucker's trying to move in on
my kid. No, but it made me. It made me go,
you know what he gets it. You know, he's he's
a dad of sons and he gets it that. You

(18:18):
know that. That's pretty much what it's all about. And
we're all in the same company. So it's good. Any
of the Odyssey fuckers, yeah, don't take that. You know,
I hope they all lose their job now we got
here's the thing radio has gotten. You know, radio used
to be a much bigger industry and it still does well,

(18:40):
but we need more people in radio and radio. You know,
I saw a stat that was out the other day
and what was it. It said something about gen Z
still listen. Yeah, it was it was it was like
it was like gen Z with radio. It was pretty crazy,
but it was something like that. Yeah that it said
that that radio revival the state of radio revival, gen

(19:06):
Z says, but up up, we read it here for you. Yeah,
seventy seventy nine percent of gen Z say that they
love listening to radio still, which a lot of people
would think that, gen Z, which what is that? What's
the age of the generation that you at sixteen to

(19:29):
twenty four year olds or something?

Speaker 7 (19:30):
Yeah, there's like ninety six, like two thousand and three
or something. Are twenty two?

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Man? Who's you're gonna say? Damn again? But actually I
agree with that though.

Speaker 7 (19:40):
I agree with that because actually a lot of my
friends still say, oh I still listen to radio Oilsen,
you know Joe all the time. Oh my god, I
heard you on the radio today.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
It's like crazy, a lot.

Speaker 7 (19:48):
Of people still.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
So anybody thinks radio is dead, you know, the problem is,
I think we've done such a bad job in radio
of talking about radio and promoting radio. We all talk
oh podcasting or everybody listens just on their phones, and
nobody does any of this stuff. The thing is to
make difference where you're listening to it. It's still radio.
People still think that it's radio when you're listening on
your phone, because it is. But you know what the

(20:11):
you know what was really uh flattering was when we
went to uh Irish off Ionia and the crowd was
gen Z. I mean it was I would say it
was like ninety gen z and and to see how
much they loved this radio show, and to know that
their influence of listening to this radio show came through

(20:32):
their mothers when they were driving to school with them.
And because those are going to be the next you know, mothers,
so to speak, driving to school with their kids. So
let's go. I love that man. I love Tom. It
look like a bit I love you. Do you know what?

(20:53):
I don't think i'd ever say that Tom is no
offense to coaches.

Speaker 7 (21:00):
Here's a taller.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
Version'ry, a twenty year younger version.

Speaker 6 (21:03):
I'm trying to Are we not going to say the obvious?
I'm sorry, Modo, you have hair?

Speaker 1 (21:07):
I got hair? Yeah? Gott yeah, esus a couple god
which was an age game. Do you think Peyton would
like to work on our show? Which I bet? I
bet your Peyton. I bet your Peyton never sits there
insult John Jay or Rich like that. I'm sorry, Oh yeah,

(21:29):
yeah she will.

Speaker 6 (21:29):
I talked about that on John Jay's podcast. By the way,
if you took a listen, did you.

Speaker 5 (21:33):
No, No, okay, don't listen to twenty seven.

Speaker 6 (21:37):
Year olds, okay, so you only listen to your age groups,
like forty.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
Enough, right exactly. We should have had Zach d this
podcast this week, Zack. It would have been a much
nicer to everybody type pod. No, this is fun. I
like this. Let's let's keep him figuring. We got to
figure out, by the way, when you went to UH
to go hang out with those guys in Arizona, because

(22:03):
Zach was talking about Jed, who is the guy that
or who's the person on their show does their audio
because they do a syndicated show where they do it
live in cities and then they do it pre taped
where they edit the edit it down content wise, and
whoever does that does a masterful job of doing that thing,
because that is a fucking work.

Speaker 6 (22:24):
They rotate it between like so they have an audio producer,
he was out so I didn't have the pleasure of
meeting him, but their audio their second audio producer and
their executive producer, Nick and Grant. They both tag team
it and they do all of the audio work, break
it down, upload uploading the podcast, and then they're segging
on nextion at the same time while answering phone calls.
So they're doing it all like it's like.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
When I was listening to the podcast that Lydia is
talking about, which is what is it called. It's called
the It was John Jay and Rich's after show podcast,
right which I found out they taped during the show
afterwards and they yeah, that's the name of it. It's
on the iHeartRadio. Yeah, and it's titled we Got Your Producer.

(23:13):
Dear Mojo, we Got your Producer. When I was listening
to the podcast, and I'm like hearing everybody kind of
having this inquisitive thing. I gave Lydia a lot of
props because it's tough because she John Jay asked for
a critique and she did not say, oh, you guys

(23:34):
are the greatest, I love you whatever. This whole deal is,
she gave a critique, and so I was listening to
it kind of feeling a little okay, how are they
going to take it? But the thing that's cool is,
and I think John Jay's built from my same cloth
of I don't want you to say nice things. I
don't want you to praise me. I want to get better,
like you know what I mean?

Speaker 7 (23:52):
Yeah, And I thought that was also Lydia is Keldyan,
They'll never tell you anything else.

Speaker 5 (23:59):
I got twenty seven reasons why Lydia is incredible and
I have seventy five.

Speaker 1 (24:05):
You guys. Ever, you guys have like a like a
sexual tension between the Jewey. Remember how everybody thought that
you and again see it. It's a love relationship. Lydia
is pretty hot, guys, and her mom and dad already
love you. That's true. You're part of the family.

Speaker 7 (24:21):
Hour together, you guys would be dating.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
I would never would not.

Speaker 5 (24:24):
I would never first what I would never ask you
what nuts you like? Never said I would never say
that the gray on your beard and maybe oh no, no,
no no, you should see the ones on my chips.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
By the way, one day, I hope we're all at
the Ihart Radio Music festil and I get to see
Kevin's chest. I want to be pool side, come on,
I want to talk about it. I want to be
at this. I want to be at the the wind
pool having cocktails with the girl from Grand Rapids. Uh
that cav finally gets a chance to be.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
Number one with Let's uh, let's do a live show
in Grand Rapids.

Speaker 1 (25:04):
All right?

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Wait, I have one question before we Is there a
show that you would not want to go to? Your
life they're fucked up. Man, I don't want to see
that train wreck over there. God, it's wild.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Uh no, maybe?

Speaker 6 (25:20):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (25:22):
What's his name? Why am I brain farting?

Speaker 5 (25:26):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (25:26):
What's the guy's name that's in Seattle? Uh? Why am
I brain? I? I can't. I can't believe I'm forgetting
his name. He's on all kinds of stations, you know
what I'm talking about? Up up, up up? Hold on?
I may have to edit this for the podcast, or

(25:47):
do I not edit it? This is the raw real
here you go? Hold on? Uh, I'm radiotele show. Why
did I brain fart on? Jubil He's like uh? Jub
and Bobby Bones would probably be the two shows I
wouldn't want to sit in on sure, only because of
uh they uh there. Those are two guys that do

(26:11):
a lot of pre tapes uh stuff and formative to me,
it would be a different format. The other thing, too,
is uh, you know, I like I like radio, and
I love what people do. I just think that it's
it's tough to I feel like you'll be live a
little bit, you know. I'm sure I'm too old school
when it comes to that, but I think those would

(26:32):
probably be the the two, the one, the one show
that I have never sat in with, but he sat
in with us numerous times because he was our first
consultant on the show, and he would be great to
go see him do his thing. Right now would be
Elvis Durant. Oh for sure, you know, I I bow
down before that guy because to me, I look at
what he has accomplished in being in the number one

(26:56):
radio city in the world in New York City. He's amazing.
And the other thing too, is there is not one
person that is either working for Elvis or has worked
for Elvis that wouldn't say even the people that he's
had to let go over the years, that would say
that Elvis duran has done anything bad in his life.
He's like the greatest. So I love the guy. Anything

(27:19):
else before we end this thing, I'm gonna go. I'm
gonna go with this girl.

Speaker 4 (27:24):
Lansing girl, Detroit girl.

Speaker 1 (27:26):
Don't need your girl out thoughts. I'm gonna I'm gonna
get you some just for men me. I'm not listening
if it changes, I'm not dying anything. There will be
no big guys with gray hair. I like grey hair.
I'm letting mom let me Jesus wants me to be,
is how I'll be. Aren't great? By the way, I

(27:48):
called bullshit on that. That's the first thing like, that's
because you shaved them. It's because you're trim, not individually.
I just saved them the data, all right, This
