They both will have difficult matchups on the way to
a state quarter final with great matchup tonight. We saw
it a month ago at Rockford, a fabulous game, kind
of back and forth, the game of mommentums, and the
freshman Ni Wolf hit in the game winner as Rockford
prevailed by a deuce.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
And we thought there'd be a little more drama in
the house tonight because of the fact that Hudsonville and
Rockford were pointing to this rematch. But as you know
how tough it can be in the OK Red Division,
you can't look past anyone, and not like Hudsonville was.
But they went to the Haven on Friday night last week,
Grand Haven along the lake shore, and you'll hear from
Mark Kelly had coming up in our Monte Construction Coaches

corner here on the J and H Family storees pregame show.
He said, they just shot the lights out. It felt
like everything was going in. And that's coming from a
guy who he feels this Hudsonville team is his best
outside shooting and three point shooting team he's had in
his sixteen years, so they rely upon that. But he
said grand Haven really shot the ball. Well, and they
knocked off Hudsonville seventy to fifty seven to give them

a little bit more of a cushion going into this
one tonight.

Well, in his sixteen years as a head coach for
Eric Elliott, I mean, this Eagles program, the staple has
been defense. They've always been outstanding defensively, and you know
they need to guard a little better, you know, and
you have that through long season, the ebbs and flows,
and they need to get back to playing Hudsonville basketball.
They need to guard the three because Rockford can make
threes as well as anyone.

So they're gonna have their hands full of night. Okay.

Red Division is doing doubleheaders on Tuesday nights and Friday nights,
so we'll pass along.

The Rockford girls keep it rolling.

Just one loss on the season, unbeaten Okay Red play
as they won just a few minutes ago finishing off Hudsonville.
Great effort by the Eagles again, who are playing their
best basketball on the girls side. They lose by a
dozen though, fifty seven forty five.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, and you know it was ten to seven Hudsonville
early when I walked in the building halfway through the
first quarter, and Josie De Smit, the Hudsonville senior point guard,
had all ten Hudsonville points. They actually had a twelve
to ten lead late in the first quarter, rock for
goes on a run, and midway through the third quarter,
Hudsonville had twenty three points and Josie just had twenty
of them. So it's just tough when you play a
team as good defensively as Rockford is to get other

people scoring. But Hudsonville is a team I think that's
dangerous on the girls side because remember, just like the boys,
Rockford and Michigan go north. Hudsonville be in that region
with Grand Haven and some other Forest Hills Northern, some
other really quality teams. They have the potential to make
a run. Josie needs some help. She had twenty six
tonight in the loss Anai pitch. You know, she had
twenty probably right about her average. She made Josie De

Well, I think Rockford needs to start fast, and maybe
that sounds silly, but Friday night at East kent Would

the fourth quarter. But remember East Kentwood's a talented team.
They're very young, still learning how to win. This Hudsonville

He hasn't as he crosses the timeline only a junior,
but been up on varsity for Eric Kelly since he
was a freshman, Griffin Baker. They really feel he's getting
into his own as far as his basketball legs. The
senior in the back court, Joey Miller, another one those
double digit scores. He's been up on the varsity since

he was a sophomore. Justin Fisher has been the big surprise.
According to Eric Kelly, you heard that in our Montel
construction coach this corner a senior and then Isaiah Hamlet,
the transfer, big fellow. He's six ' eight and a
senior in the post man the man, pressure defense by
Rockford on the back side, nice bounce pass on the
baseline and Hamlet up for two Eagles strike first.

Well, big surprise right Justin Fisher not just to score
excellent drive Drew the defense kicked the Hamlet and by
the way, I'm a big uniform guy, Bratt Rockford. Where
the oranges that ken with last Friday? I much prefer
the Blacks.

out here comes Daniels and working against Gross takes me.

one of the better juniors in the state. Try to

Good defense by the Eagles. Yeah, we're gonna watch basket
them early. They were trying to get it to him there,
but an excellent job by Joey Miller, Fisher tap three

when I was looking at the stats at this game,
justin Fisher isn't getting enough shots. When you're shooting that
high of a percentage, you're just not getting enough shots.
You shouldn't be shooting that high. You need to shoot more.
He's gotten a couple of looks early, and that's what
you want to do. If your Hudsonville, the guy could
fill it up like justin Fisher's filling it up this year.
Get him the ball, get him.

watched last night. I watched these Kentwood rock Ford game
from Friday, and Rockford up to the slow start, and
they brought Eli Wolf the freshman and off the bench,
kind of gave him a spark, and I think that's
what Kyle Cluff's looking for here bringing Wolf in. We
also see Josh basketman. Of course, Josh has been starting
the last two games with his brother out. He's a
guy that can provide some Miinston offense as well. Rockford
still to have a point where three minutes.

In Josh Baskom, younger brother of Jake freshman, as you mentioned,
one of two Eli Wolf, the other one has the
basketball left wing right in front of Hutsonville bench. Now
back in front, that's Josh Baskom, freshman and freshman out

what are we gonna have an offensive follow that time

and their size and athleticism. As Fisher at the free

his stroke really has come on his senior year off
to a great start. He's got four jo Von Daniels
leading scorer on the floor with six for the Eagles.

sixteenth season just blew me away. Any believe that we
call him mister District He's also mister all Okay red
title along with Kyle Cluff. As you mentioned, eight district titles, Eric,
including six in a row from eleven to sixteen.

He was on quite a run there.

I wonder if it's gonna throw him off beat in
February with the district.

Bask him down low on the left block, trying to
back his way in pretty good defense. I know he
got him on the arm. Good call by the official,
Jalen Ostein. I think it would have been all right
if you just held his position. He had bask him
kind of off bounce a little bit, but good job
by Jake being aggressive here because Rockford needs to get
some easy baskets, whether it's at the free throw line
or down low.

With their size, and with Jake coming back after being
out for about a week, you know you want to
get him involved. And that's kind of the first time
they've really gone to him. They tried to go to
him one other time in the post, but Hudsonville was
able to steal the entry pass. So see if this
free throw trip can get Jake basket them going a
little bit for the Rams.

How about his numbers?

He keeps getting better right as a junior now fourteen
point two points per game, coming in six point eight rebounds, almost.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Two steals a game. Well, he's the tallest Rockford player.
He plays the five, but he can shoot the three.
I mean, he's not just a post guy. And that's
what we see in basketball today. You gotta be able
to play everywhere, all three levels if you want to
be effective.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
Got the second sweet stroke for the big man goes
about sixty six to sixty seven. And I tell you what,
very athletic, and he's a leaper. He can play above
the rim all night long. That free throw makes it
a ten point game, sixteen to six. Joe Bond Daniels
between the legs so quick working against Dick Kuiper, and
he's gonna get on the floor before the shot.

A little bump on a block by to Kuiper. The
senior Hutsaville up ten. Here we're approaching the end of
the first quarter. We talked about the four double digit
average scores. Hudsonville has only one of them currently on
the court, and Joe von Daniels as Joey Miller, gets

You know, one of the things that Eric Elliott talked
about in our Montel Construction Coaches corner of the pregame is,
you know, the growth not only height wise, but muscle
wise and growing into his body.

With Joe von Danielson, you saw it right there.

I don't think he would have been able to make
that move against the Kuiper, who's put together a pretty
physical himself with as strong as he did off the
bounce a year ago.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
And that's just to development. He's only a junior.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
Yeah, he just he's one of those guys that's been
around right since he was a freshman, So you forget
that he's still got a year and a half high
school left.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
Especially with the way he plays on the court too.
He just plays so far beyond his years. Knocks down
both free throws. He's got eight to lead all scores
to Kuiper dribbling right side down the lane, a back

an MHSAA registered official has been a pathway to working

Ron Torbert, has worked two of the last four Super Bowls,
and he's a former MHSAA official. Ron's also a graduate
of Michigan State University. Like Torbert, Dean Luk is an

finished sixth in the nineteen fifty nine Heisman Trophy voting.
